British curriculum to IB transition in the UAE: what it costs, and why

A british curriculum to IB transition in the UAE is a decision about breadth, and breadth has a price. Three A Levels occupy a timetable; six Diploma subjects plus an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS occupy a household. This page sets out what the move costs a UAE family — in school fees against the KHDA 2026-27 freeze, in support hours, and in the two years of evenings nobody prices — and what you actually get back for it. Every lesson runs live online.

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What a family is actually paying for when it leaves A Levels for the Diploma

British-curriculum families in the UAE reach this decision at a predictable moment: the IGCSE results are in, the sixth form offers both routes, and somebody at a school open evening has described the Diploma as broader and harder. Both descriptions are true and neither is useful for deciding. The decision is about what the next two years will cost in time, in money and in the particular kind of attention a Diploma asks a household to supply, and about what the family gets in exchange.

Start with the structural difference, because every cost follows from it. A Level students in the UAE typically take three subjects, sometimes four, and nothing else. A Diploma student takes six subjects across six groups — language and literature, a second language, individuals and societies, a science, mathematics and an arts or elective — with three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. On top of those sit three core requirements: a 4,000-word Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge with an essay of about 1,600 words and an exhibition, and the CAS programme of creativity, activity and service. The maximum score is 45, of which three points come from the combination of Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge grades.

That shape produces three cost lines a family should see before committing. The first is subject support: six subjects means six possible points of failure rather than three, and the subject a student is weakest in is a Standard Level they did not choose but had to take to fill a group. The second is the core, which no school teaches in a single timetabled lesson and which almost every Diploma family ends up supporting in some way. The third is unpriced and real: the Diploma occupies evenings and weekends in a way three A Levels do not, and that falls on whoever in the house is managing deadlines.

The school-fee side is unusually favourable this year, which is worth knowing before anyone negotiates. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Supply is also rising: Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools — four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate — creating 16,846 new places, after six schools opened in 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. A family choosing a Diploma place has more leverage than the same family had two years ago.

On tutoring, this page quotes the market rather than a price list. Published rates in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 200 to 450 or above for exam-year specialists, and AED 180 to 500 for in-home visits where travel is priced in. Those figures belong to the providers and rate tables that published them, named in the tables below. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson, because the honest number depends on the subject's scarcity and the level, and a figure printed here would be a figure we had to defend rather than one you could rely on.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video, to families in every emirate. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a Diploma family that is usually the better arrangement, because the scarce thing is not proximity but a Higher Level specialist in the right subject who can also supervise an internal assessment properly.

Four routes a British-curriculum family is choosing between at 16, each with a different cost profile and a different set of doors at 18. The Diploma is one of them, not the default.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, assessed by external examinations and internal assessments in every subject. The core adds a 4,000-word Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge with an essay of around 1,600 words and an exhibition, and CAS. Scores run to 45 points, with three awarded from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix.

In Dubai, International Baccalaureate students made up 7 per cent of the private-school population in 2024-25, against 37 per cent on UK curricula, so the Diploma is a minority route here with a strong institutional base. Three of the seven schools opening for 2026-27 are IB, which means more places and more competition for experienced Diploma teachers at the same time.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining two or more Diploma courses with a career-related study and its own core, including a reflective project and personal and professional skills. Less common in the UAE than the full Diploma but offered by some schools, and genuinely useful for a student who wants two academic subjects in depth alongside a vocational focus.

Worth asking about if your child's IGCSE profile is uneven — strong in two subjects, weak in a third that a full Diploma would force them to carry. Availability in the UAE is limited and varies by school, so confirm with the sixth form directly rather than assuming the IB label covers it.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge or Pearson A Level

Three or four subjects taken in depth, with AS available as a standalone qualification after one year in the Cambridge system. No compulsory breadth, no core, and no second language requirement. Assessment is almost entirely terminal written papers, with practical endorsement in the sciences depending on the board and specification.

The route most British-curriculum UAE schools default to, and the cheaper one to support: three subjects means three possible tutoring lines rather than six plus a core. For a student with a clear single direction — medicine, engineering, architecture — the depth is an advantage and the breadth of the Diploma is a tax.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

The five years before the Diploma in an IB continuum school, assessed against criteria A to D in each subject group with a Personal Project in the final year. Students arriving into DP1 from MYP are already fluent in criterion-based marking, command terms and reflective writing, which is the single largest difference between them and an IGCSE arrival.

This is the comparison a British-curriculum family should make honestly. A DP1 cohort in a Dubai IB school usually contains both MYP continuers and IGCSE arrivals, and the IGCSE arrivals spend the first term learning criteria-based assessment that the others have used for five years. That first term is where support money is best spent.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These notes are about cost and risk rather than content. For each subject, where an IGCSE background puts a student ahead, and where the Diploma version turns out to be a different animal that needs paid help.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route for students heading to engineering, physics, economics or mathematics. HL is the most demanding single subject in most Diploma timetables and the most common reason a British-curriculum arrival buys weekly support from term one. Proof, series and complex numbers are the usual breaking points; the exploration is the usual deadline crisis.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics led, with a technology-permitted assessment design. Cheaper to support than Analysis and Approaches because the content is more self-contained, but the HL statistics and the exploration still absorb hours. Check the university prerequisite before choosing it to save money — some engineering courses want Analysis.

Physics

HL and SL

A comfortable transfer from IGCSE 0625 or 4PH1 in content and an uncomfortable one in style: the Diploma expects uncertainty treatment, graph linearisation and extended explanation as a matter of routine. The internal assessment, an individual investigation, is where unsupported students lose most, and where supervision rather than teaching is what is needed.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Mole work and organic mechanisms arrive in reasonable shape from IGCSE. Energetics, equilibrium and the HL organic sequence are new in depth, and the data-based question rewards a habit of reading the booklet rather than recalling a value. Commonly the second subject a family adds support in, after mathematics.

Biology

HL and SL

The content volume is the cost here. Diploma Biology is wide, examined with precise command terms, and unforgiving of approximate definitions. Students strong at IGCSE 0610 often underestimate it for a term and then need a concentrated block, which is more expensive than the steady weekly hour they declined in September.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Where IGCSE English leaves a student well prepared in writing and poorly prepared in apparatus. The individual oral, the HL essay and the paper on unseen texts all want analysis of how meaning is constructed in context. A strong IGCSE grade is no predictor here, which is why families are surprised by the first DP1 report.

English B and other Group 2 languages

HL and SL

The group that catches British-curriculum arrivals who dropped their language after Year 9. A second language is compulsory in the Diploma, and the realistic options are to resume one at ab initio or Standard Level, or to take the student's home language where the school offers it. This is a cost line nobody plans for and it is often the cheapest to fix early.

Economics

HL and SL

Popular with British-curriculum arrivals and genuinely different from IGCSE 0455. The internal assessment is a set of commentaries on published news articles against specific criteria, which is a research-and-writing skill rather than a content one, and it is the component that most often needs structured supervision rather than subject teaching.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven with a substantial internal assessment, and at HL a pre-released case study that the whole cohort prepares. Students arriving from IGCSE Business Studies find the content familiar and the evaluation demands unfamiliar: recommendation and justification carry the marks, and generic answers sit at the bottom of the band.

History

HL and SL

The internal assessment is a historical investigation with a formal structure and a source-evaluation section, and the HL extension adds depth study with its own paper. IGCSE History arrivals have the source skills; what they lack is the scale of reading, which is a time cost rather than a tutoring cost.

Geography

HL and SL

Fieldwork-based internal assessment plus HL core extension topics. The data skills transfer from IGCSE 0460 but the Diploma's synthesis questions ask students to argue across units, which is a habit that has to be taught and is cheap to teach early and expensive to teach in DP2.

Visual Arts, Theatre and Music

HL and SL

Group 6 choices with heavy portfolio and process requirements, assessed against criteria over two years rather than in an exam week. Support here is almost entirely process coaching: journals, documentation, deadlines. Families who treat these as the easy subject in the timetable usually discover otherwise in DP2.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Support for this transition comes in three shapes, priced differently because they cost us differently. All run one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time slots.

A route-decision session before the sixth-form form goes in

One or two sessions whose output is a decision rather than teaching. The tutor works through the IGCSE grade profile, the intended university direction and the two schools' actual subject offers, and sets out which Diploma groups would force a weak subject into the timetable and what that would cost over two years. Families use this in the weeks between results and the sixth-form deadline.

  • Reads the real subject offer at both routes, not a generic comparison
  • Identifies the Group 2 language problem early, when it is still cheap
  • Maps Maths AA or AI against the named university prerequisites
  • Puts a two-year support cost estimate on each route before you commit

Weekly one-to-one in a Higher Level subject

The standard Diploma purchase: one subject, one fixed slot, running from DP1 into DP2 with the pace set by the school's own sequence. Internal assessment supervision is built in at the right point in the year rather than bolted on in a panic, and sessions shift to past-paper components in the final term.

  • Same tutor and slot across both Diploma years
  • Command terms and criteria taught explicitly, not assumed
  • Internal assessment supervised, never authored
  • Half-termly review of whether the session is still the right purchase

A core block for the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge

A short, bounded set of sessions for the components no school teaches weekly: scoping an Extended Essay question that can actually be answered in 4,000 words, structuring a Theory of Knowledge essay against the prescribed title, or preparing the exhibition. Priced as a block because the work is finite and the deadlines are fixed.

  • Question scoping before research, which is where most Extended Essays go wrong
  • Criteria explained in the subject guide's own language
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, with the authorship line held firmly
  • Dated to the school's internal deadlines, not to ours

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

The honest price of breadth, in one answer

  • Nine places to be weak in the Diploma, against three on A Levels
  • The subject needing most help is usually the Standard Level the timetable chose
  • Market rates: AED 150-300 an hour online; AED 240-2,000+ a month depending on tier
  • The Diploma's value sits in the core, which is also the part most often wasted
  • An uneven IGCSE profile with one clear direction usually points to A Levels

A British-curriculum family moving to the Diploma should expect to support more subjects, for longer, than the same family would on A Levels, and the reason is arithmetic rather than difficulty. Three A Levels give three places where a student can be weak. Six Diploma subjects plus three core components give nine, and at least one of those six subjects will be one the student did not want and took to fill a group. In practice the subjects that need paid help in a Diploma are rarely the Higher Levels the student chose; they are the Standard Level the timetable chose for them, and the core.

Put rough numbers on it from published market rates rather than from ours. A qualified subject tutor online in Dubai runs roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 or above. One weekly hour in one subject across a 30-week school year is therefore an order of magnitude families can model themselves; two subjects plus a core block is roughly double it. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions put budget support at AED 240 to 600 a month, mid-range at AED 600 to 1,200 and specialist exam-year support at AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more.

What a family gets for that is not a higher score — nobody can promise one, and this page does not — but a different kind of two years. The Diploma's value is in the components A Levels do not have: a 4,000-word independent research project with a supervisor, a reflective course that forces a student to interrogate how claims are made, and a compulsory second language. Universities that like the Diploma like it for those things. A student who treats them as box-ticking has bought the expensive route and taken none of the benefit.

The other half of the honest answer is who should not make this move. A student with a single clear direction and an uneven IGCSE profile is usually better served by three A Levels in their strengths. A student who dropped languages at 14 and dislikes writing will find the Diploma's compulsory breadth a two-year tax with no payoff. Those are real cases, and a tutoring company telling every family the Diploma is the right answer is selling rather than advising.

02

Three A Levels against six Diploma subjects, compared properly

Most comparisons of these two routes are written by someone selling one of them. The useful version compares what a week actually contains, what is assessed, and what each route closes. On contact hours, three A Levels and six Diploma subjects occupy roughly similar timetabled time, because the Diploma spreads the same school day across more subjects at shallower depth per subject — Standard Level sits somewhere below A Level depth, Higher Level somewhere near it.

Assessment is where the routes separate. A Levels are overwhelmingly terminal: the grade arrives from written papers in a single series, with practical endorsement in some sciences. The Diploma assesses internally in every subject — an exploration in mathematics, an individual investigation in the sciences, commentaries in economics, a historical investigation — and those internal assessments carry a fixed share of each subject grade and fall due across DP1 and DP2 rather than at the end.

That difference is the one that costs money. An A Level student in difficulty needs teaching. A Diploma student in difficulty frequently needs supervision: somebody to help them scope a question, hold them to a plan, and read a draft against criteria. Those are different services, and the second is the one UAE schools are least able to supply at scale because it needs one adult per student per component.

The table sets out the comparison line by line. It is worth reading with your child's actual IGCSE profile next to it, because the right answer genuinely differs between two siblings in the same house.

What the two-year move costs a UAE family, line by line

Families ask what tutoring costs and then discover the other lines later. Setting them out together makes the decision cleaner, and this year the fee line is unusually stable. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For a family moving school to access the Diploma, that means the published fee is the fee for the year ahead.

The second line is capacity, which affects negotiating position rather than price directly. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places; six new schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. A family being told a Diploma place is scarce should check that claim against the published expansion before accepting a waiting list or a deposit.

The third line is support, and the figures below are what named providers publish rather than what IB Gram charges. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase lists AED 270; BartyED lists AED 650 for premium named tutors. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 or above, with monthly packages seen at AED 799 online for eight sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

The fourth line has no price and is the one families report as hardest: the household time the Diploma absorbs. Deadlines for internal assessments, Extended Essay milestones, Theory of Knowledge drafts and CAS evidence arrive in parallel, and somebody at home ends up tracking them. That is not an argument against the Diploma. It is an argument for pricing the route honestly before choosing it.

04

What actually drives the number on your quote

Tutoring prices in this market look arbitrary and are not. Four things move the figure, and a family that understands them can tell a fair quote from an opportunistic one. The first is scarcity of the specific combination. A Standard Level Business Management tutor is plentiful; a Higher Level Further Mathematics or Theatre specialist who can also supervise an internal assessment, in a Gulf Standard Time evening slot, is not. The second is level: Higher Level work takes longer to prepare per hour taught, and that is reflected everywhere in the market.

The third is format, and this is the one families can control. In-home visits carry travel inside the rate, which is why Bestimate's Dubai figures put them at AED 180 to 350 while online qualified tutors sit at AED 150 to 300 for comparable expertise. Group classes are cheaper per student and paced for the group, which works for revision of shared content and fails for a student with a specific gap. The fourth is what the hour contains: a session with written feedback, a marked past-paper section and a progress note costs more to deliver than an hour of conversation.

A fifth factor is worth naming because it inflates quotes without adding value: claimed examiner status. Some providers price on it. Examiner status that cannot be evidenced is a marketing claim, and even where it is real it gives no access to marking, boundaries or paper content. Pay for subject expertise and for the ability to teach a specific student, not for a label.

The table shows how the published market splits by level and format. It is the market's shape, not a price list, and it is the frame a family should use when comparing two quotes that look similar.

Year 11 to DP1, and the first term nobody budgets for

The transition itself has a shape and it is consistent enough to plan around. An IGCSE arrival into DP1 is competent in content and unfamiliar with criteria. The Diploma marks against published criteria in every internal assessment and uses command terms with fixed meanings across all subjects, and a student arriving from a terminal-exam system reads those criteria as guidance rather than as the mark scheme they are.

That produces a specific first-term pattern. The student works hard, writes competently, and receives criterion marks in the middle bands because they have answered a question adjacent to the one the criteria asked. Parents read the first DP1 report as a verdict on ability and buy help in three subjects at once. In most cases the cheaper and more effective purchase is one block of work on criteria and command terms, shared across subjects, because the problem is common rather than subject-specific.

The second predictable cost is the Group 2 language. British-curriculum students frequently drop languages after Year 9, and the Diploma requires one for two years. A student starting at ab initio or Standard Level with no recent language experience needs steady low-intensity support from the beginning, which is cheap, rather than rescue in DP2, which is not.

The third is the Extended Essay, and specifically its scoping. Most Extended Essays that go wrong go wrong at the question, not at the writing: a question too broad to answer in 4,000 words, or too narrow to sustain one. A single session on the question before research begins is the highest-value hour in the whole two years, and almost nobody buys it.

Maths AA or AI: the choice that costs or saves two years

This single decision does more financial damage than any other in a Diploma timetable, in both directions. A student placed in Analysis and Approaches Higher Level because it sounded more impressive, who then needs weekly support for two years to survive it, has bought an expensive course. A student placed in Applications and Interpretation who then finds their intended engineering degree asks for Analysis has bought a problem that money cannot fix in DP2.

The honest framing is that the two courses serve different destinations. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic and proof-oriented route, expected by most engineering, physics, mathematics and quantitative economics programmes. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics led with technology permitted throughout, and suits business, social sciences, design, medicine in some systems, and many other routes perfectly well. Neither is the easy one; they are differently hard.

The decision has to be made against named requirements rather than general advice, and the requirements belong to the universities rather than to the IB. A UAE family applying across several systems — UK, United States, Canada, Europe, local universities — should read the mathematics prerequisite on each target programme's own admissions page before the subject form goes in, because those pages differ and they change. This page deliberately does not state what any named university requires, because any figure here would be out of date before your child applies.

What a tutor can usefully do at this point is diagnose rather than advise in general terms. A session that sets a student real Analysis and real Applications questions, marks both, and reports which one they can actually do is worth more than a conversation about ambitions. The table below sets out the structural differences that make the choice decidable once the requirement is known.

07

Where the money should not go

  • Four subjects at once in term one usually solves a single shared problem four times
  • A session continued out of habit is a cost with a negative lesson attached
  • Board syllabuses and past papers are free from the board; never pay for them
  • No provider can promise a score, a points total or an admission
  • Self-asserted ratings and unevidenced examiner claims are priced marketing

A page about cost owes families the other half of the advice: the purchases that do not work. The first is four weekly subjects bought in the first term of DP1 in response to a first report. That report is usually measuring criteria unfamiliarity, which is one shared problem rather than four separate ones, and it resolves with a single block of work on criteria and command terms plus time.

The second is a weekly hour continued out of habit. A student whose gap has closed does not need a standing session, and keeping one running teaches them that their work depends on an adult arriving every Tuesday. Any provider unwilling to tell you when to stop is being paid to not tell you.

The third is paying for revision material. Official syllabuses, specimen papers, past papers and mark schemes are published by the boards and should be referenced and linked, never bought from a third party or downloaded from a tutoring site. We do not reproduce or supply board documents here for that reason, and a site that hosts a mark scheme is a site to be careful with generally.

The fourth is buying outcome promises. Nobody can promise a score, a points total or a university place, and any provider who does is pricing a claim they cannot honour. Nor should anyone be paying for claimed examiner status without evidence, or for a self-asserted rating: two providers in this market publish contradictory review figures on the same page, which is worth knowing before a star rating moves a decision.

08

What a supervisor may do with an internal assessment, and what you are not buying

  • Supervision means criteria, question scoping, modelling on another topic and draft feedback
  • Authoring any part of assessed work is malpractice and the student carries the consequence
  • Editing to completion and model essays on the student's own title are the same offence in softer wording
  • Board documents are linked from the board, not hosted here
  • No examiner claim without evidence, and examiner status grants no access to marking

The Diploma puts more assessed independent work in front of a student than any other route a UAE family is choosing between, so the honesty boundary is a practical matter rather than a disclaimer. A tutor may teach the subject skill, explain the assessment criteria in the subject guide's own language, discuss a proposed question, model an approach on a different topic, and give feedback on a draft the student has produced themselves. That is supervision, and it is the most valuable service in the Diploma.

A tutor may not become the author of an internal assessment, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay. That is not a stylistic position: submitting work that is not the student's own is malpractice under IB rules, the consequence falls on the student, and it can end a Diploma. Any provider offering to produce assessed work is offering to put your child at that risk in exchange for money.

It is worth knowing what is actually for sale in this market. One operator in this SERP sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. A family comparing quotes should treat that offer as information about the seller rather than as an option, and should be sceptical of softer versions of the same thing — editing to completion, rewriting a draft, supplying a model essay on the student's own title.

The same line applies to materials and to credentials. We link official board documents rather than reproducing them. We do not describe tutors as IB or Cambridge examiners where current examiner status cannot be evidenced, and we do not use examiner status to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, because it gives none. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education.

09

Getting started, and the honest version of what happens next

  • Write down both subject lists, the university direction and the IGCSE profile first
  • Aim the support budget at the forced subject, not the favourite one
  • Buy core scoping early; it is the cheapest point in the whole Diploma
  • A free trial lesson with the matched specialist comes before any quote
  • Where the match does not exist, we say so with a timeframe

The useful first step is not booking a tutor. It is writing down three things: the six subjects your child would take on the Diploma route and the three they would take at A Level, the university direction as currently understood, and the IGCSE grade profile subject by subject. Those three documents turn a general anxiety into a decidable question, and most families find the decision becomes obvious once they are side by side.

The second step, if the Diploma is the choice, is to identify the forced subject. Every Diploma timetable contains one subject the student would not have chosen, and that subject is where the two-year support budget should be aimed. Families who aim the budget at the favourite Higher Level instead are protecting the subject least at risk.

The third is to buy the core scoping early. A session on the Extended Essay question before research begins, and a session on Theory of Knowledge structure before the first draft, cost less than any rescue work later and they move three points that come from the core matrix rather than from a subject. Almost nobody does this, which is why it is worth saying twice.

What happens after you contact us: a free trial lesson with the specialist who would actually teach the subject, no card details and no commitment, followed by a written view on what the two years need and what they do not. If no specialist is free for a scarce combination — Higher Level Theatre, a particular Group 2 language in an early-evening Gulf slot — we say so with an honest timeframe rather than offering an adjacent subject and hoping it reads as the same thing.

Where we tutor

Where the Diploma is available, and what that does to the price

Diploma provision in the UAE is concentrated, which affects both school choice and tutor availability. These notes are about supply and its effect on what a family ends up paying.

Dubai: Emirates Hills, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

The densest Diploma provision in the country sits in this corridor, and so does the deepest pool of experienced IB teachers. That has a price effect in both directions: more places to negotiate over, but also local tutors who know they are scarce. Three of the seven schools opening in Dubai for 2026-27 are IB, which adds capacity here first.

Dubai: Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Dubai Hills

Newer communities where IB and British-curriculum campuses have opened close together, so families often choose between the two routes without changing school group. The practical constraint is the bus run rather than availability: a 6.30pm or 7pm online session holds better here than a 5pm one.

Dubai: Deira, Garhoud and Mirdif

Established schools, several running the Diploma alongside other curricula, and a long commute for anyone attending a sixth form on the other side of the creek. Evening sessions have to be scheduled after the return journey, which is the single most common reason a weekly slot gets moved.

Abu Dhabi: Khalifa City, Al Raha and Saadiyat Island

Diploma provision is real but thinner than Dubai's, and ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, which removes the cheapest-looking option and makes an independent specialist the practical one.

Al Ain

Under ADEK, with a small number of schools and real distances between them. A family here choosing the Diploma is often choosing the only Diploma available, which removes negotiating leverage on fees and makes subject-level support a question of online matching rather than local search.

Sharjah

Regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods rather than only inspecting. Diploma places are limited, so a number of Sharjah families commute into Dubai for sixth form and absorb an hour of traffic each way into the daily cost of the route.

Ras Al Khaimah and the Northern Emirates

Private education in Ras Al Khaimah is regulated by the Department of Knowledge; Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah sit under the federal Ministry of Education. Diploma provision is sparse, and Higher Level specialist cover in the local market is sparser. Online matching is the realistic route rather than the convenient one.

Al Ain and Abu Dhabi schools offering both routes

A growing number of UAE schools run A Level and the Diploma side by side, which is the cheapest place to make this decision because the child does not have to change school to change route. Ask the sixth form how many students sit each, and how many teachers hold IB examiner or workshop experience in the subjects you care about.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Diploma Programme schools in Dubai

Schools running the IB Diploma in Dubai, inspected annually by KHDA on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Several also offer A Level or another curriculum in the same building, which is worth knowing when a family wants to compare routes without comparing schools.

  • Dubai International Academy, Emirates Hills
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Arabian Ranches
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Deira International School
  • Uptown International School

Sixth forms in Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates

Outside Dubai the choice between A Level and the Diploma is often a choice between two schools rather than two routes in one. ADEK regulates Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, SPEA regulates Sharjah, and inspection outcomes should be read on the regulator's own site rather than taken from a tutoring page.

  • Raha International School, Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • RAK Academy

Schools are named here only as context for the UAE school ecosystem. No affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with IB Gram is implied, and any inspection outcome or programme offering should be confirmed with the school and the regulator directly.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send both subject lists and the IGCSE profile

The three A Levels on offer, the six Diploma subjects as the school would timetable them, and the IGCSE grades subject by subject. With those three things a specialist can tell you which route is cheaper for your child specifically, which subject will need two years of support, and where the Group 2 language problem sits before it becomes urgent.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, then a written view

One lesson with the tutor who would teach the subject, with no card details taken and no commitment. Afterwards you get a short written view: what needs weekly support, what needs a finite block, and what needs nothing. The last category is usually larger than families expect, and saying so is part of the job.

  3. 03

Price the route, not the hour

We quote per subject and per core component after the trial, with the scope stated — how many sessions, over what period, towards which deadline. An hourly figure with no scope attached is how a Diploma support budget doubles without anyone deciding to double it.

  4. 04

Internal assessment and core dates in the plan from the start

Your child's school sets internal deadlines for every internal assessment, the Extended Essay milestones and the Theory of Knowledge drafts. Those dates go into the session plan at the beginning, so supervision happens at the point it is useful rather than in the fortnight before a submission.

  5. 05

Reviewed every half term, including whether to stop

Each half term we ask whether this session is still the right purchase. Sometimes the answer is to drop it because the gap closed, sometimes to change tutor because the match is wrong, and sometimes to move the budget to a different subject. A standing session nobody has questioned for a year is a standing charge.

  6. 06

When the specialist does not exist, we say so

Some Diploma combinations are genuinely scarce in a Gulf evening slot: Higher Level Further Mathematics, Theatre, a specific Group 2 language, or a Group 6 subject with portfolio supervision. When we cannot match within a sensible window we tell you that with a realistic estimate rather than offering someone adjacent.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The quote is built from scope, not from an hourly rate

Every quote states how many sessions, over what period and towards which deadline, per subject and per core component. Families can then compare it against the published market bands on this page instead of against a number with nothing attached to it.

Every AED figure on this page is somebody's published figure

The rate bands here are what named providers and the Bestimate Dubai 2026 table published, read in October 2026, presented as the market rather than as our price. Where a figure cannot be sourced, this page says so rather than filling the gap.

Supervision of independent work, held inside the rules

Internal assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge support means criteria, question scoping, modelling on another topic and feedback on the student's own draft. We do not author assessed work and we say so in writing before the first session.

Delivered online, stated before you ask

UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time slots. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service. For a Diploma family the scarce resource is a Higher Level specialist, not proximity.

We will tell you the Diploma is the wrong route

A student with one clear direction and an uneven IGCSE profile is usually better served by three A Levels, and a student who stopped languages at 14 pays a two-year tax for breadth they will not use. Those are real cases and we say so rather than selling six subjects of support.

Independent, with no claimed accreditation

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, operates no UAE premises, and names schools only as context.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Is the IB Diploma more expensive to support than three A Levels?+

Usually, and for structural reasons rather than because Diploma teaching costs more per hour. Three A Levels give three places where a student can be weak; six Diploma subjects plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS give nine. The subject that needs paid help is typically the Standard Level the timetable forced into the gaps, not the Higher Level the student chose. Published Dubai rates for a qualified subject tutor online run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 or above, so the arithmetic follows the subject count.

Which part of the Diploma do British-curriculum students struggle with most?+

Criteria, in the first term, across every subject at once. The Diploma marks internal assessments against published criteria and uses command terms with fixed meanings, and a student arriving from a terminal-exam system reads criteria as guidance. The result is competent work in middle bands and a first report that looks like an ability problem. It is one shared problem, not six, and a single block on criteria and command terms is usually the cheaper and more effective purchase than three weekly subjects bought in panic.

My child dropped languages after Year 9. What happens in the Diploma?+

A second language is compulsory for both Diploma years, so the realistic options are resuming a language at Standard Level, starting one at ab initio where the school offers it, or taking a home language if it is available. This is the cost line British-curriculum families consistently fail to anticipate. The useful move is steady low-intensity support from the first term, which is inexpensive, rather than rescue work in DP2, which costs several times more and arrives when every other deadline is also live.

What does school actually cost if we move for a Diploma place in Dubai?+

The published fee, this year, with unusual certainty. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Supply is also rising: the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places. A family told a Diploma place is scarce should check that against the published expansion before paying a deposit.

How do I choose between Maths Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation?+

Against a named university requirement, not against general advice. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic and proof-oriented route expected by most engineering, physics and mathematics programmes; Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics led with technology permitted throughout, and suits business, social sciences, design and many health routes. Neither is a soft option. Read the prerequisite on each target programme's own admissions page before the subject form goes in, and have your child attempt marked questions from both courses rather than guessing.

Is a Higher Level subject worth the extra support cost?+

It is if the university direction requires it and the student can hold it alongside five others. Higher Level sits near A Level depth and costs more per taught hour to support, because preparation rises with level — which is why published market bands move from AED 150 to 250 for a qualified Standard Level tutor up to AED 200 to 450 or above for a Higher Level specialist. Three Higher Levels chosen by ambition rather than by requirement is the most common way a Diploma timetable becomes unaffordable in both money and evenings.

When is the cheapest moment to get help with the Extended Essay?+

Before any research starts, at the question. Most Extended Essays that go wrong go wrong because the question is too broad to answer in 4,000 words or too narrow to sustain one, and no amount of later help recovers a well-written essay answering an unanswerable question. One scoping session is the highest-value hour in the two years and almost nobody buys it. Three of the 45 available points come from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge matrix together, so the core is where marginal gains are cheapest.

Can a tutor supervise an internal assessment without crossing a line?+

Yes, and that is the most useful service in the Diploma. A supervisor may teach the subject skill, explain the criteria in the subject guide's own words, discuss a proposed question, model an approach on a different topic, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A supervisor may not author any part of assessed work. Submitting work that is not the student's own is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student. Editing to completion and supplying a model essay on the student's own title are the same offence in softer language.

Should we switch at the end of Year 11 or stay on the British route?+

It depends on the IGCSE profile and the direction, not on which curriculum is better. An even profile across languages, humanities, sciences and maths plus genuine interest in independent research points towards the Diploma, and the core is what universities value in it. An uneven profile with one clear direction — medicine, engineering, architecture — usually points to three A Levels in the strengths, where depth helps and breadth is a tax. A student who dislikes extended writing and dropped languages at 14 will find the Diploma expensive in every sense.

What does a Diploma tutor cost per hour in Dubai at the moment?+

Published figures as of October 2026: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IB from AED 200 for a qualified subject tutor online; TutorChase lists AED 270; BartyED lists AED 650 for premium named tutors. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 or above. Those are other providers' figures. IB Gram quotes per subject after a free trial lesson.

Are monthly packages better value than paying by the hour?+

Only if the scope is written down. Packages seen in the Dubai market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget tier, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. The question to ask is session length, who the tutor is, what happens to unused sessions, and whether internal assessment supervision is inside or outside the package.

Do you send a tutor to our home in Dubai for Diploma lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Diploma lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time evening slots. For this route that is usually the stronger option, because the scarce resource is a Higher Level specialist who can also supervise an internal assessment properly, and that person rarely lives within driving distance. Market in-home rates run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel priced inside them.

How many hours a week does a Diploma student realistically need?+

Fewer than most families buy, and aimed at different subjects than they expect. A common pattern that works is one weekly hour in the single hardest Higher Level, a finite block on the forced Standard Level, and two or three scoping sessions across the core. Four weekly subjects bought in the first term of DP1 almost always treats one shared criteria problem four times over. We review every half term and will say when a session should stop, because a standing slot nobody questions is a standing charge.

Does the Diploma leave room for the mandatory UAE subjects in a Dubai school?+

The school has to make room, because the requirement sits with the regulator rather than the curriculum. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and KHDA advises any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. For a family budgeting support hours, those periods reduce the free study time a six-subject timetable leaves.

Can you promise my child will score higher on the Diploma than on A Levels?+

No, and neither can anyone else. Nobody can promise a score, a points total, a grade improvement or a university place, and a provider pricing such a promise is charging for something they cannot honour. What can be said is where the risk sits: in the forced subject, in the Group 2 language, and in the core components no school teaches weekly. Support aimed at those three places does more than the same money spread across six subjects, which is advice rather than a guarantee.

What should I ask a provider before paying for Diploma support?+

Five things. Which syllabus and subject guide version they teach from. Whether internal assessment supervision is inside the quote and what they will and will not do with a draft. How many sessions the quote covers, over what period, towards which deadline. Whether any examiner claim can be evidenced, and what they say it gives access to — correct answer: nothing about marking or boundaries. And whether they will tell you when to stop. A provider unwilling to answer the last one is being paid not to.

Price the route before you choose it

If your family is weighing a move from the British curriculum to the IB Diploma, write down three things first: the six subjects as the school would timetable them, the three A Levels on offer, and the IGCSE grades subject by subject. Send those over and a free trial lesson with the matched specialist follows, with no card details and no commitment, delivered live online wherever in the Emirates you are. You will get a written view of what the two years need, what they do not, and which single subject the support budget should actually be aimed at.
