ICSE to IGCSE transition in the UAE: which series, and what to drop

An ICSE to IGCSE transition in the UAE begins with two decisions nobody makes for you: which exam series your child will be entered for, and which subjects come off a seven-subject ICSE load when the IGCSE option block only has room for eight or nine. Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran to 19 November; a child arriving now is planning for a May or June paper. This page works through both decisions, and all lessons run live online.

  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel codes taught from the syllabus document itself
  • Option-block mapping done subject by subject before the entry form closes
  • Evening slots in Gulf Standard Time, one student and one tutor
  • Free trial lesson with the matched specialist, not a sales call

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

An ICSE student usually arrives with the writing, and without the option block

The first thing to say about this move is that it is often easier than families fear, and for a reason specific to the ICSE board. A CISCE education is unusually heavy on written English, on project and internal-assessment work, and on breadth: a Class 10 student has carried English Language, English Literature, a second language, History with Civics, Geography, Mathematics, the three sciences and a Group 3 elective at the same time. That breadth is tiring, but it produces a student who can write to a prompt and who has met criteria-based assessment before. Both of those transfer straight into an IGCSE course.

What does not transfer is the shape of the timetable. An IGCSE programme is built from option blocks. A student picks eight or nine subjects, some compulsory, and the rest are chosen against a grid that may not let two favourites sit together. For a family used to a prescribed ICSE subject list with a small elective slot at the end, this is the first real decision of the move, and it is taken in a meeting with a head of year who has about twenty minutes and a spreadsheet.

The second decision is the series. An IGCSE grade is produced by an exam series, and series have deadlines that fall long before the papers. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year; the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and revises them, so the live official timetable is the only version worth working from.

Those two decisions interact, which is where families get caught. A student arriving in the UAE in October cannot sensibly be entered for a November series in a subject they have not been taught; a student arriving in January can often be entered for May or June in subjects where ICSE coverage was already ahead. Knowing which subjects are which, in week one rather than in March, is most of the work.

There is also a grade-arithmetic problem worth naming early. ICSE reports percentages and ICSE percentages are high by international habit — a 92 in an ICSE subject is a good but unremarkable result. IGCSE reports 9 to 1 or A* to G against grade boundaries set per series. There is no conversion table between the two, and a family who assumes a 92 implies a 9 is setting up a disappointment that has nothing to do with how hard the child worked.

IB Gram works with families on all seven emirates' timetables, and lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. What a transferring ICSE student gets instead is a tutor matched to the syllabus code on the entry form, in an evening slot that survives the school run.

At a glance

  • ICSE breadth produces a student who can write to a prompt and has met criteria-based marking
  • IGCSE is chosen from option blocks, so two subjects a student wants may not sit together
  • Pearson runs May/June and November series; Cambridge runs June and November
  • ICSE percentages do not convert to IGCSE grades, and no honest table claims they do
  • Internal-assessment experience from CISCE is an advantage in coursework-bearing IGCSE routes
  • Entry deadlines, not exam dates, are the planning constraint in the first term
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four things a transferring CISCE family has to understand in order: where a younger child lands, the two IGCSE boards UAE schools run, and the sixth-form routes an IGCSE grade profile opens or closes.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Two years per subject, each with its own syllabus code, assessed almost entirely by terminal written papers with practical or alternative-to-practical components in the sciences and speaking components in languages. Most subjects run Core and Extended tiers with different papers and different grade ceilings. Cambridge offers series in June and November, and Checkpoint tests at the stage below in March, May and October.

An ICSE student's broad Class 9 coverage usually maps onto Extended rather than Core, but the receiving school decides, and it decides from whatever evidence it has. A transferring family's practical job in term one is to generate evidence — topic checks against the school's own scheme — before that decision is taken, because it is effectively fixed once final entries are submitted.

Int GCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The other board widely used in UAE schools, with its own codes and paper structures: Mathematics A 4MA1 sits two equally weighted papers, Physics 4PH1 runs two papers without a separate practical exam, and English Language A 4EA1 can be taken on a coursework route or a fully examined route depending on the centre's choice. Grading runs 9 to 1.

Pearson is often the easier board for an ICSE student arriving late, because several of its subjects have no separate practical paper and its English specification includes an examined-only option. That matters when a student has joined after the coursework window at the school has already closed, which happens constantly with mid-year arrivals from India.

CheckpointAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary and Checkpoint

The three years before the IGCSE course, with diagnostic Checkpoint tests in English, Maths and Science that produce a scale score per strand rather than a certificate. Series run in March, May and October, which gives a mid-year arrival an external assessment point instead of an internal placement test written for children already in the system.

For an ICSE family this is the comfortable entry. A child moved at the end of Class 7 or 8 reaches the option-block decision with two years of British-curriculum assessment behind them, and the receiving school has real strand-level data rather than a percentage from a different board's mark scheme.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level

Three or four subjects taken in depth across two years at most British-curriculum UAE schools, with AS available as a standalone one-year qualification or as the first half of the full A Level. Entry to each A Level course almost always carries a subject-specific IGCSE grade condition, typically grade 6 or 7 in the same subject.

This is where the option-block decision taken at 14 shows its teeth. A student who dropped a science to protect a timetable clash may find the A Level they want closed two years later. On the British track, Ministry of Education equivalency also asks for one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside the IGCSE requirement.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Subject by subject, these notes say where ICSE coverage puts a student ahead and where the assessment style costs marks. The pattern is different from the Indian-curriculum stereotype: the writing is usually fine, the exam technique is not.

English Language A (Pearson 4EA1) and First Language English (Cambridge 0500)

Extended

Normally the strongest transfer in the whole move. ICSE students have written composition, précis and comprehension to a prompt for years. The gap is narrow and technical: directed writing has to hit a named form and audience, and writer's-effect questions want the device named and its effect explained rather than the passage retold.

English Literature (Pearson 4ET1 / Cambridge 0475)

Extended

ICSE Literature in English is a separate paper with set texts, so a transferring student is used to close reading and quotation. The new skill is the comparative or unseen element and the examiner's expectation of an argument rather than a summary of themes. Marks come from the line of argument, not from the number of quotations.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 / Pearson 4MA1)

Core and Extended

ICSE geometry, mensuration and trigonometry run ahead of IGCSE requirements, so content is rarely the issue. The losses are method marks for unstated working and, more often than families expect, the non-calculator paper — ICSE students are used to calculator-permitted arithmetic and lose fluency marks on the paper that bans it.

Additional Mathematics (Cambridge 0606) and Further Pure Maths (Pearson 4PM1)

Extended only

Worth asking about if your child is heading to A Level Mathematics. Content overlaps heavily with ICSE Class 10 and early Class 11 work — calculus basics, series, trigonometric identities — so a strong transferring student can often be entered with a short preparation block rather than a full teaching course.

Physics (Cambridge 0625 / Pearson 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Numerical work transfers; extended explanation does not. The six-mark question wants a causal chain in physics language, and ICSE training rewards a derivation and a result. Cambridge's alternative-to-practical paper tests experimental judgement — anomalies, control variables, sources of uncertainty — in a way an ICSE practical record does not.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620 / Pearson 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Mole calculations and organic reaction schemes arrive in good shape. The descriptive half is the gap: qualitative analysis, flame tests, precipitate colours and gas tests are examined as a memorised bank, and electrolysis is wanted at half-equation level with an explanation attached.

Biology (Cambridge 0610 / Pearson 4BI1)

Core and Extended

The widest gap among the sciences, because IGCSE expects the syllabus's own wording for defined processes. Osmosis, active transport, transpiration and enzyme specificity each have a preferred definition, and an accurate paraphrase scores below the exact phrasing. Unfamiliar-data questions are the other reliable loss.

History (Cambridge 0470 / Pearson 4HI1)

Core and Extended

ICSE History and Civics is content-rich and examined by recall; IGCSE History is examined by source evaluation, where the mark comes from provenance, purpose and reliability rather than from knowing more. A transferring student often knows plenty and writes the wrong kind of answer for two terms.

Geography (Cambridge 0460 / Pearson 4GE1)

Core and Extended

Map skills and data response dominate, with a fieldwork-style investigation paper at Cambridge. ICSE Geography includes substantial map work, which helps, but the IGCSE case-study requirement — a named place with named figures for each topic — is new and has to be built deliberately.

Economics (Cambridge 0455 / Pearson 4EC1)

Core and Extended

A common new choice at the option-block stage for students who took Economic Applications or Commercial Studies as an ICSE Group 3 elective. The examinable core is diagram accuracy: an unlabelled axis or an unshifted curve earns nothing regardless of the paragraph around it.

Computer Science (Cambridge 0478) and ICT (Cambridge 0417)

Extended only

ICSE Computer Applications gives most students usable Java or programming logic, so the algorithms paper is approachable. The theory paper is where marks go: binary and hexadecimal conversion, data representation, packet switching and the fetch-execute cycle all want the syllabus's own language.

Hindi as a Second Language (Cambridge 0549) and French (Cambridge 0520)

Extended

The second-language slot is usually the easiest grade to protect during a transfer, because an ICSE student already has two years of a second language behind them. Check which languages the receiving school's option block actually offers before assuming the same language continues — it frequently does not.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of support suit three different moments in a CISCE transfer. All run one-to-one over live video, with worked solutions left behind after each session.

Option-block consultation before the form goes in

One or two sessions whose output is a decision rather than a lesson. The tutor works through the receiving school's option grid against your child's ICSE strengths and intended sixth-form route, identifies which blocks force a choice, and writes down what each combination closes two years later. Families use this in the week between accepting a place and the subject-choice meeting.

  • Reads the actual option grid, not a generic subject list
  • Flags where an A Level grade condition will later require grade 6 or 7
  • Identifies which subjects ICSE coverage has already made cheap
  • Produces a one-page note a parent can take into the school meeting

Weekly one-to-one across the two IGCSE years

A fixed weekly slot in one subject, paced against the school's scheme of work and the series the centre enters for. Past-paper work is introduced once a topic is secure rather than from the first session, and command-term practice is built into ordinary teaching instead of appearing the week before a mock.

  • Same tutor, same slot, same syllabus code throughout
  • Mark-scheme reading taught explicitly as a skill
  • Half-termly review of whether the session is still worth buying
  • Written progress notes the parent can actually read

A twelve-week countdown to a specific series

For a late arrival or a resit, a short dated block built backwards from the exam window for the centre's zone. Sessions are organised by component rather than by topic, because at that range the limiting factor is almost always paper execution. The plan states explicitly which topics are being left alone.

  • Dated from the zone timetable, not from a generic calendar
  • Timed sections under paper conditions from week one
  • Explicit decisions about what is not being revised
  • Honest advice when a series should be deferred rather than attempted

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What an ICSE student already does well, and what the first mock will hide

  • Written fluency and composition habits transfer almost intact
  • Internal-assessment experience is an advantage in coursework-bearing routes
  • History and Geography answers are usually good essays about the wrong thing
  • The first post-transfer mock understates ability; the second reads about right
  • Diagnosis before tuition saves more than it costs in this specific move

A CISCE education produces specific strengths and the receiving school will not know about them for a term. Written fluency is the first: ICSE students have been writing compositions, letters, précis and literature answers since primary, and they rarely have the blank-page problem that defines a weak IGCSE English candidate. Breadth is the second: carrying English Language, English Literature, a second language, History with Civics, Geography, Mathematics, three sciences and an elective at once builds a student who can hold several subjects in the air.

The third is less obvious and genuinely useful. ICSE assessment includes internal assessment and project work in most subjects, so a transferring student has already been marked against criteria for something they made themselves. That is exactly the habit a coursework-bearing IGCSE route rewards, and it is a habit CBSE transfers usually lack. Check the current CISCE regulations for the exact weighting, which changes, but the experience is the point rather than the percentage.

What the first mock will hide is that all three strengths are masked by exam technique. An ICSE student writing an IGCSE History answer will write a good essay about the wrong thing, because IGCSE History pays for source provenance and purpose rather than for knowing the period. An ICSE student answering a six-mark Physics explanation will give a derivation and a number. The mark looks like a knowledge problem and is actually a format problem, and the two are fixed by completely different kinds of teaching.

That is why the first useful purchase in this transfer is diagnosis rather than tuition. One short block that produces a topic-level and skill-level gap list tells a family which of its four worried subjects is actually a format issue solvable in six weeks, and which is a real content gap needing two terms. Families who skip that step tend to buy four weekly subjects in October and discover in February that two of them were never the problem.

02

Which series, and the deadlines that sit in front of it

The series is the unit of planning, not the school year. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year, and the dates around them are published and checkable. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026 — a gap of about nine weeks between the last paper and the grade, which matters when a sixth-form application is waiting on it.

Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, far enough out that a November window appears before the cohort sitting it has been taught, and revises them. That is a good reason to treat any date printed on a tutoring page, including this one, as a pointer to the official timetable rather than as the authority. The only version worth revising from is the live one on the board's own site, confirmed with the school's exams officer.

The Cambridge mechanics differ in one way that affects UAE families directly. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and it adds that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong version. A parent who downloads a timetable from a search result rather than asking which zone their child's centre sits in is relying on a document the board has explicitly disclaimed.

Put the two together and the planning rule for a mid-year ICSE arrival is simple. Work out which subjects can realistically be ready for the next available series, enter only those, and let the rest go to the following one. A November entry exists precisely so that a student who is not ready in June does not lose a year, and it is the single most under-used tool in this transfer.

Seven ICSE subjects into an IGCSE option block

This is the decision that defines the next four years, and most families take it in a twenty-minute meeting. An ICSE Class 9 student is carrying a prescribed load: English Language and Literature, a second language, History with Civics and Geography as a group, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and a Group 3 elective. An IGCSE programme takes eight or nine subjects chosen from blocks, where English, Mathematics and usually at least one science are compulsory and the rest compete for the same slots.

Three things go wrong. The first is dropping a science to resolve a clash, which quietly closes the matching A Level two years later — most UAE sixth forms ask for grade 6 or 7 in the subject before admitting a student to it. The second is treating History and Geography as interchangeable because ICSE taught them as one group; they are separate IGCSEs with completely different assessment, and a student who writes well will do better in History while a student who reads data well will do better in Geography. The third is losing the second language, which is often the cheapest grade on the sheet to protect.

The useful way to make the decision is backwards from 18. Write down the three or four A Level or Diploma subjects the child is most likely to take, find the IGCSE grade conditions that go with them, and make sure the option block delivers those subjects at Extended tier. Everything else is negotiable. That takes about an hour with the actual grid in front of you, and it is an hour better spent than the first four tutoring sessions.

The table below maps the ICSE load onto its usual IGCSE destination, with the gap each one carries. It is a planning document, not a promise: the codes a school uses are the school's choice and need confirming subject by subject.

04

What an ICSE percentage is not

  • Grade boundaries are set per series after marking; no fixed boundary can be quoted in advance
  • No published table converts an ICSE percentage into an IGCSE grade
  • A grade is built from components; the weakest component usually decides it
  • The first report after a transfer is a baseline, not a verdict
  • Ask which component the school's data shows as weakest, not what the overall percentage was

Every family making this move carries a number in their head, and it causes trouble. ICSE reports percentages, and ICSE percentages sit high by international convention: a student with 88 to 92 across a broad subject load is a solid, hard-working candidate rather than an outlier. IGCSE reports grades from 9 to 1, or A* to G in some subjects, awarded against boundaries set for each series on each paper.

There is no honest conversion between the two, and any page offering one is making it up. Grade boundaries move every series because paper difficulty moves, which is precisely why boards set them after marking rather than before. A tutor who tells you that 92 per cent in ICSE Mathematics equals a grade 8 at IGCSE is guessing, and a tutor who quotes a fixed raw-mark boundary for next summer is guessing twice.

What can be said usefully is where the marks actually come from. An IGCSE grade is built from component marks, each with its own share of the subject total, and a student can lose a grade on a paper they regarded as minor. In the sciences the practical or alternative-to-practical component is the usual culprit; in English it is the component with the stricter form requirement; in Mathematics it is whichever paper bans the calculator. Finding out, early, which component your child is weakest in is worth far more than any conversion table.

The other thing worth saying plainly to a transferring family is about expectations in the first reporting cycle. A school issuing its first set of grades to an ICSE arrival is grading an exam technique that is two terms behind, not a child who has become weaker. Parents who read that first report as a verdict rather than a baseline often make the two expensive mistakes at once: buying four subjects of tutoring, and accepting a Core tier entry.

05

The twelve-week plan for a late arrival

Mid-year arrivals from CISCE schools are common, because job moves do not wait for a September intake. A student joining a UAE school in January with a May or June series ahead of them has roughly twelve to sixteen teaching weeks for subjects the school assumes were covered last year. That is enough for two subjects done properly and not enough for five, and the plan has to say which is which out loud.

The sequence that works puts assessment first. Weeks one and two are diagnostic: a timed section from a real past paper in each subject under consideration, marked against the official mark scheme, so the gap list is evidence rather than impression. Weeks three to eight teach only the topics that the diagnosis showed are both missing and heavily weighted. Weeks nine to twelve stop teaching and work on components under timed conditions.

Two rules keep the plan honest. The first is that something has to be dropped explicitly, in writing, with the family agreeing to it. A twelve-week plan that quietly tries to cover everything covers nothing, and the student discovers that in the exam hall. The second is that a subject which cannot be ready should be deferred to the next series rather than attempted — a November entry after a weak June is a better outcome than a June grade that caps a sixth-form application.

The table lays out the shape. The weeks are counted backwards from the first paper in the centre's zone, which is the only date that matters, and the content column deliberately describes what is being abandoned as well as what is being taught.

Online one-to-one against a tutor in the room for a mid-year arrival

Families arriving from India frequently expect in-home tutoring, because that is how the market works in most Indian cities, and the question deserves a direct answer. In-home tutoring is available across Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. It costs more per hour than online because travel is priced into the rate: Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 an hour, with independent tutors quoting up to AED 500. The tutor pool is whoever will drive to your community at the hour you need.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. UAE lessons are one-to-one over live video. For this particular transfer the argument for that is concrete rather than general. A mid-year arrival needs a tutor who knows how Pearson 4CH1 structures its two papers, or how Cambridge 0610 words its definitions, within days of a decision. Matching on syllabus knowledge across a whole timezone finds that person; matching on driving distance finds whoever lives nearby.

Scheduling is the second argument and it matters most in the weeks after a move. A family that has just arrived is living in temporary accommodation, has not settled a bus route, and is often splitting school runs between two campuses. A session that requires nobody to travel can shift by half an hour on a bad evening instead of being cancelled, and it can move to a post-Iftar slot through Ramadan without renegotiating anyone's route.

The third is continuity. Families who transfer board often transfer city or country again within a couple of years, and a relationship built over video survives a move from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi or out of the UAE entirely. An in-home arrangement ends at the city limit.

Who holds the entry, and the paperwork a transferring family should ask for

  • Ask for syllabus code, tier, series and centre zone in writing, subject by subject
  • Check the list against your child's actual timetable, not the prospectus
  • Second languages and off-timetable subjects are the ones most often missed
  • Private-candidate entry carries its own fee and deadline
  • Examined specifications are easier to enter privately than coursework-bearing ones

An IGCSE grade can only be produced through a registered exam centre, and for most students that centre is their school. The school handles entries, syllabus codes, tiers, forecast grades and the zone timetable. For a mid-year arrival this administrative chain is where the most expensive mistakes happen, because the school is entering a student it has known for three months.

The failure mode is always the same: a subject the child is studying is not on the entry form. It happens with second languages, with a subject taken outside the main timetable, and with any subject where the previous school's records arrived late. Entries close months before papers, so the discovery comes too late to fix within that series.

The preventive step takes one email. Ask the exams officer for a written list of every syllabus code your child is entered for, the tier for each, the series, and the administrative zone the centre sits in. Then read it against what your child believes they are studying - not against the prospectus, which describes the school rather than your child's entry. Do this before the final entry deadline for whichever series the centre has entered your child for. In the UAE that is the June series or the November one, never the February and March sitting that Cambridge offers to India, and in both cases the deadline lands months ahead of the first paper rather than weeks. For a family arriving from an ICSE school the timing matters twice over, because the syllabus codes will be unfamiliar and a wrong tier is far cheaper to correct before the entry is filed than afterwards.

Where a subject is genuinely missing, private-candidate entry through an accepting centre is the route, with its own fee and its own deadline. Fully examined specifications are far easier to enter privately than coursework-bearing ones, because coursework has to be produced and authenticated somewhere. That is one practical reason a transferring student needing an extra English qualification is usually steered to the examined route.

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is free and valid for two years
  • Created by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No published fine schedule, so no amount can honestly be quoted
  • A centre with premises needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit; an individual tutor does not
  • IB Gram holds no regulator approval and states so on every page

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit system, and a family paying for lessons may reasonably ask about it. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published: Khaleej Times reported that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties, so a figure circulating online is a figure nobody can source. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, and is used through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal category. It needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. That is a specific instrument issued to organisations with a physical centre.

IB Gram holds no such permit, runs no UAE premises, and claims no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. It names regulators on these pages to explain what they do, and it names schools only as ecosystem context. Any tutoring site that describes its tutors as approved by a UAE regulator is describing something that regulator does not issue to tutors.

What a tutor may do with a coursework piece, and what nobody may do

  • Teaching the criteria, modelling on another question and reviewing a draft are all legitimate
  • Authoring any part of assessed work is not, regardless of the deadline
  • A provider selling finished coursework is advertising its own standards
  • Late arrivals are usually better served by an examined route than a coursework route
  • Official papers and mark schemes are linked from the board's site, never reproduced here

ICSE students arrive with real project experience, which makes the honesty boundary both easier and more important to state. A tutor may teach the skill, explain the assessment criteria in the specification's own terms, model an approach on a different question, read a draft your child has produced and give feedback on it. A tutor may not become the author of assessed work, at any price, and no reputable provider offers that.

The pressure point in a transfer is the deadline. A mid-year arrival may land after the school's coursework window has opened, with a title chosen for them and six weeks to produce something they have never produced before. The right help is to narrow the scope and teach the structure, so the piece is smaller and genuinely theirs. The wrong help is to fill the page, and the consequence of that falls on the student rather than on whoever sold it.

It is worth knowing what the market actually contains. One operator in this SERP sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. Submitting bought work is malpractice under board rules, and a provider willing to sell it is telling you everything else you need to know about what they sell. Where a specification offers both a coursework route and a fully examined route, a late-arriving student is almost always better directed to the examined one.

The same principle governs materials. We reference and link board documents rather than reproducing them: syllabuses, specimen papers, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables live on cambridgeinternational.org and qualifications.pearson.com, and the official copy is both the lawful one and the current one. A tutoring page hosting a mark scheme is a page you should not trust on anything else either.

Where we tutor

Where a CISCE family lands, emirate by emirate

The availability of an IGCSE place, and the realistic start time for an evening session, are different in each emirate. These notes are about the practical mechanics of a transfer rather than about the schools themselves.

Dubai: Jumeirah, Al Barsha and Al Quoz

The widest choice of IGCSE places in the country sits along this corridor, and mid-year entry is routine. The constraint is traffic rather than availability: a child collected from Al Barsha at 3.15pm is rarely settled before 5.30pm, so a 6.30pm or 7pm online slot holds better than an earlier one.

Dubai: Mirdif, Al Warqa'a and Al Qusais

Where most Indian-curriculum families in Dubai actually live, and where a board change usually means a longer bus run rather than a house move. Families here commonly keep one child in an Indian-curriculum school and move another, so a session plan has to work around two different term calendars.

Sharjah: Al Nahda and Muwaileh

Dense Indian-curriculum provision and comparatively few IGCSE places, which pushes families either into a Dubai commute or into a decision to switch later at sixth form. The Sharjah Private Education Authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods for schools in the emirate, so fee and curriculum changes move on its timetable.

Abu Dhabi: Mussafah, Khalifa City and Al Wahda

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools here. Its professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, so the tutor a family would most naturally ask is not an option, and an independent specialist is the practical route.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK, with real distances between campuses and a thinner British-curriculum market. The option-block question bites hardest here, because a subject not offered locally cannot simply be picked up at another school down the road. Confirm the block before accepting a place.

Ajman and Umm Al Quwain

Supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate authority. IGCSE provision is limited enough that several families finish ICSE Class 10 and change at sixth form instead. If that is the plan, the subjects worth protecting through Class 9 and 10 are Mathematics and English.

Ras Al Khaimah

Private education is regulated by the Department of Knowledge, which like Sharjah approves curricula and fees rather than only inspecting. Local specialist tutoring cover is thin — RAK appears in no competitor tutoring page we examined — which makes a syllabus-matched online tutor the realistic option rather than the convenient one.

Fujairah

Under the Ministry of Education. The question to settle early is centre administration rather than teaching: confirm which Cambridge administrative zone the school's centre sits in, because Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after working from the wrong zone's timetable.

School ecosystem

IGCSE-running schools in Dubai

British-curriculum secondaries in Dubai, inspected annually by KHDA on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Boards differ between them and sometimes between departments within one of them, so ask subject by subject which syllabus code is entered for this year rather than assuming the school has a single answer.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • GEMS FirstPoint School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park

IGCSE-running schools in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates

Outside Dubai the IGCSE map thins quickly, and the regulator changes with the emirate: ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Inspection outcomes should be read on the regulator's own site.

  • Sharjah English School
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah

School names appear here as context for the UAE school ecosystem only. No affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with IB Gram is implied, and any inspection outcome should be checked on the relevant regulator's own website.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the option grid and the entry confirmation

The two documents that make this transfer plannable are the receiving school's option block grid and the written confirmation of what your child is entered for. With those two things a tutor can tell you in one reading which subjects are cheap, which are expensive and which decision closes a door in two years. Without them, any advice is guesswork dressed as experience.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, with a diagnostic purpose

One lesson with the specialist who would actually teach the subject, no card details and no commitment. It is a real lesson, but its second job is diagnosis: by the end you should know whether this tutor can read your child, and we should know whether the problem is content, format or confidence, because those need different plans.

  3. 03

A written gap list, by topic and by skill

After the trial, and after a short diagnostic block where one is warranted, you get a gap list that separates missing content from missing technique. That distinction is the whole point: a format problem in History is six weeks of work, a content gap in Biology is two terms, and buying the wrong plan for either wastes a term.

  4. 04

    Dates before hours

The plan is written as dates — entry deadline, teaching cut-off, component weeks, the first paper in your centre's zone — rather than as a number of hours purchased. If your child cannot be ready for the series the school has entered them for, you hear that at the planning stage and not in April.

  5. 05

Reviewed every half term, including the decision to stop

Each half term the question is whether this session is still worth buying. Sometimes the answer is to drop a subject because the gap closed, sometimes to change tutor because the match is wrong, and sometimes to stop entirely. A session a child no longer needs teaches them that tutoring is permanent, which is not a lesson worth paying for.

  6. 06

When the match does not exist, we say so

Some combinations are scarce — Pearson 4PM1 Further Pure Maths, or a Literature specialist for a specific set text, in an early-evening Gulf slot. When we cannot match within a sensible window we tell you that, with a realistic estimate of how long it would take, rather than offering someone adjacent and hoping.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The option block is treated as part of the teaching

Most of the damage in this transfer is done by a subject-choice meeting, not by a syllabus. We read the actual grid against the intended sixth-form route and write down what each combination closes, because that is the advice a family cannot get from a tutor who only sees one subject.

Matched to the code, not the subject name

Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 are different exams. A tutor fluent in one can mislead a student sitting the other, particularly on paper structure and practical assessment. We match on the code that appears on the entry confirmation, and re-match if the school changes board between year groups.

No conversion tables, no invented boundaries

Grade boundaries are set per series after marking, and no honest table converts an ICSE percentage into an IGCSE grade. Where a number cannot be sourced — a boundary, an IB session date, a permit fine — this page says so instead of filling the gap with something plausible.

Delivered online, and said so before you ask

UAE lessons run one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service. Families arriving from Indian cities often assume otherwise, which is exactly why it belongs in the page rather than in a phone call after a decision.

Every AED figure carries a source and a month

The rate bands on this page are what named providers publish, with October 2026 as the reading date, presented as the market rather than as our price. IB Gram quotes after a free trial, because the honest number depends on subject scarcity and level.

Independent, with no claimed accreditation

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform holding no approval, accreditation or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and operating no premises in the UAE. School names appear as context only.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Is IGCSE harder than ICSE Class 10?+

Broader in skill and narrower in content. An ICSE student has usually carried more subjects and written more extended prose than an IGCSE candidate, and much of the Mathematics and Science content runs ahead of what Cambridge 0580 or 0620 require. What is new is the assessment grammar: stated method marks, command terms that pay differently, source evaluation in History, case studies in Geography and an alternative-to-practical paper that tests experimental judgement. Expect two terms of format learning. The first set of grades after a transfer understates ability; the second set is usually a fair reading.

How do I map seven ICSE subjects onto an IGCSE option block?+

Work backwards from 18 rather than forwards from Class 9. Write down the three or four A Level or Diploma subjects your child is most likely to take, find the IGCSE grade conditions attached to each, and make sure the option grid delivers those subjects at Extended tier. Then protect the second language, which is usually the cheapest grade on the sheet. History and Geography are separate IGCSEs with different assessment, so choose by whether your child argues well or reads data well rather than by what ICSE grouped together.

Does an ICSE percentage convert into an IGCSE grade?+

No, and any table claiming to do it is invented. IGCSE grade boundaries are set for each paper in each series after marking, because paper difficulty varies, which is why boards publish boundaries afterwards rather than in advance. An 88 to 92 per cent profile in ICSE indicates a hard-working student across a broad load, not a predicted grade 8. The useful question is which assessment component your child is weakest in, since a grade is built from components and a single neglected paper decides plenty of them.

Can my child be entered for the November series instead of June?+

Yes, and for a mid-year arrival it is often the better choice. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year, and Cambridge runs June and November series. November 2025 Pearson results reached students on 22 January 2026, which is in time for most sixth-form decisions. Entering only the subjects that can realistically be ready for June, and sending the rest to November, produces a better grade profile than over-entering and discovering in the hall that two subjects were never covered.

Which board is easier for a student arriving from a CISCE school mid-year?+

Neither is easier overall, but Pearson Edexcel is often more practical for a late arrival. Several Pearson specifications have no separate practical examination — Physics 4PH1 runs two written papers — and English Language A 4EA1 offers a fully examined route alongside the coursework one. That matters when a student joins after the school's coursework window has opened. The decision is the school's rather than the family's, though, so the real question to ask is which code each department enters for this year.

What should I ask the school before accepting an IGCSE place?+

Four things, in writing. Which syllabus code each department enters for, so you buy the right past papers. Which tier your child will be entered at and what evidence that is based on. Which series the centre is entering for, and the final entry deadline for it. And which Cambridge administrative zone the centre sits in, because Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six zones and states it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who misses an exam after using the wrong zone's timetable.

My child writes well but is losing marks in IGCSE History. What is going wrong?+

Almost certainly a good essay about the wrong thing. ICSE History and Civics rewards recall and organised content; IGCSE History pays for source evaluation, where marks come from provenance, purpose, tone and reliability rather than from knowing more about the period. A transferring student will often write fluently about what happened and score in the middle of the band because the question asked why a source says what it says. This is a format problem, usually fixed in six to eight weeks of deliberate source work, not a knowledge problem.

Does ICSE project work help with IGCSE coursework?+

Yes, more than most families realise. CISCE includes internal assessment and project work in most subjects, so a transferring student has been marked against criteria for something they produced themselves — the exact habit coursework-bearing IGCSE routes reward, and one CBSE transfers usually lack. Check the current CISCE regulations for the weighting, which changes. The caution is timing: a mid-year arrival may land after the coursework window has opened, in which case a fully examined route is usually the kinder option.

How many weeks does a twelve-week countdown realistically cover?+

Two subjects properly, not five. The sequence that works spends weeks twelve and eleven on timed diagnostic sections marked against the official scheme, weeks ten to seven teaching only heavily weighted missing topics, weeks six to four on component-level work such as the non-calculator paper or the practical alternative, and the last three on full timed papers with error analysis. Something has to be dropped explicitly and in writing. A plan that quietly tries to cover everything covers nothing, and the student finds that out in the exam hall.

Do you provide tutors who come to our villa in Dubai or Sharjah?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. UAE lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time evening slots. For a mid-year transfer that is usually the stronger option, because the help needed is code-specific — somebody fluent in how Pearson 4CH1 structures its two papers, or how Cambridge 0610 words its definitions — and searching by syllabus rather than by driving distance finds that person in days. Market in-home rates run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included.

What does IGCSE tutoring cost in the UAE market right now?+

As published in October 2026: Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 for a qualified subject tutor online; TutorChase lists AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the specialist and premium end. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 or above. Those are other providers' figures. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson.

Will my child have to take Arabic in a British-curriculum school?+

In Dubai, yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements had to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies. Plan revision time around those periods, and note that Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from the five accredited subjects counted for Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track.

Can a tutor help write my child's coursework if the deadline is close?+

A tutor can teach the skill, explain the criteria in the specification's own words, model an approach on a different question and give feedback on a draft your child has produced. Authoring any part of assessed work is malpractice under board rules, and the consequence falls on the student rather than the seller. One operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750, which tells you what else they sell. With a tight deadline the useful help is narrowing the scope so the piece is smaller and genuinely the student's own.

Do tutors in the UAE need a licence, and should I ask to see it?+

They need a MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years and open to school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system under the service name Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a stated two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published.

Is it better to finish ICSE Class 10 first and switch at sixth form?+

It is a legitimate route and sometimes the better one, particularly in emirates where IGCSE places are thin. A completed ICSE certificate has value, and a student can move straight into AS Level or an IB Diploma afterwards rather than collecting IGCSEs retrospectively. The two things worth protecting in that plan are Mathematics and English, because sixth-form entry conditions almost always sit on those. Check the receiving sixth form's published entry requirements before Class 10 begins rather than after the results arrive.

How quickly can a tutor start after we land in the UAE?+

For common combinations — Mathematics, the three sciences, English at either board — usually within a few days, because the search is by syllabus rather than by neighbourhood. Scarcer combinations take longer: Further Pure Maths, a specific Literature set text, or a second language at Extended tier in an early-evening Gulf slot. When a match is not realistic in a useful timeframe we say so with an honest estimate rather than offering an adjacent specialism, because a mid-year arrival cannot afford a wasted month finding that out.

Two documents, then a plan

If your family is moving a child from an ICSE school into an IGCSE course in the UAE, the two things to get hold of first are the receiving school's option block grid and the written confirmation of what your child is entered for — code, tier, series and centre zone. Send those over and a free trial lesson with the matched subject specialist follows, delivered live online wherever in the Emirates you have landed. If the honest answer is that one subject needs a twelve-week countdown and the other three need nothing, that is what we will tell you.
