IB MYP Tutor in International City

Buying an IB MYP tutor in International City is the cheapest tutoring decision a family here will make, and the easiest to overspend on. Middle Years grades are built from four criteria per subject, and a term aimed at the one weak criterion costs a fraction of a year of general support. This page sets out what each AED band buys at this stage and which purchases actually move a grade. Lessons are one-to-one online.

  • Criterion breakdown requested from the school before anything is quoted
  • Market rates published in AED and attributed to their source
  • Short targeted blocks rather than open weekly arrangements

IB & IGCSE in International City

The cheapest stage to buy tutoring, and the easiest to overspend on

The Middle Years Programme is the point in a child's education where tutoring costs least and is most often bought in the largest possible quantity. The reason is the report. There are no percentages, the grades run 1 to 8, and a parent with no reference points reads a 4 and panics into an open weekly arrangement across three subjects, which at the qualified band of AED 150 to 300 an hour is a substantial monthly commitment for work nobody can evaluate afterwards.

What the report is not telling you is where the actual problem sits. Each MYP subject is assessed against four published criteria, each marked out of eight, and the four marks convert to the single grade. A science profile of 7, 7, 3, 2 and a flat profile of fives can produce similar grades while describing entirely different children. The first needs investigation design and data evaluation; the second needs something else; and neither needs three subjects tutored generally.

So the first action is free and it is not a purchase. Ask the school for the criterion-level breakdown rather than the report. Most schools hold it, many will share it when asked directly, and with four criterion marks in hand a tutor can say within one session what a term of work should contain. That conversation routinely turns a three-subject arrangement into a single term aimed at one criterion.

The second thing worth knowing is that the budget band genuinely works at this stage, which is not true at Diploma Higher Level. Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. For Middle Years content support that band contains usable help. What it less often contains is criterion literacy, which is the narrower and more valuable skill here.

International City adds its own arithmetic. There is no international school inside the district, so MYP students travel to Al Warqa, Al Qusais, Silicon Oasis or Mirdif and come back late. Published in-home rates run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel against AED 150 to 300 online, and from these clusters that premium of roughly AED 50 to 150 an hour buys a long journey rather than a better-informed tutor.

IB Gram delivers this online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, because home visits are an India-only service for us. What follows sets out which Middle Years purchases earn their money, what each band buys at this stage, and the one purchase almost nobody makes that is worth more than all the others. Every figure is attributed to the provider who published it and dated, because three of the six leading pages in this market publish no price at all.

  • Budget online tutors at AED 45-150 an hour are genuinely usable for MYP content
  • Criterion literacy is the narrower skill and the one worth paying for
  • In-home rates carry a travel premium of roughly AED 50-150 an hour
  • Lessons are one-to-one and online; no tutor travels to a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages within the programme, with the spending question answered differently at each.

MYP13Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

MYP years 1 to 3

Criteria applied more gently and reports hardest for parents to read. The two things worth paying for are number fluency to automatic recall and structured writing, because the programme does not systematically drill either and both become expensive to fix later.

This is the stage where the lowest market band is entirely adequate, because the work is skill-building rather than criterion interpretation. A term of weekly sessions on one named skill at AED 45 to 150 an hour is a modest commitment, and it is the right shape: short, specific and finite rather than open-ended.

MYP45Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

MYP years 4 and 5

Criteria applied at full strength, the Personal Project running alongside, and in many schools a split of mathematics into standard and extended routes. This is where criterion literacy starts to matter and where the qualified band begins to earn its difference over the budget one.

For families in these clusters the mathematics route decision made at the end of MYP 3 has a long tail, because the extended route builds the algebraic fluency the Diploma later assumes. If Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is a possibility, a term of targeted work producing marked evidence at the extended route is better value than two years of general support.

PPMYP 5 · Year 11

The Personal Project

An independent long-term project with a supervisor, assessed against published criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the product. The MYP's largest single piece of independent work and the clearest rehearsal for the Diploma's Extended Essay.

Coaching here is naturally finite - four to six sessions scheduled backwards from the school's deadline - which makes the total cost known at the start. It is also the purchase where the boundary matters most: the student sets the goal, does the work, keeps the journal and writes the report, and anybody offering otherwise is selling your child a malpractice finding.

BRIDGEAges 15-16

MYP 5 into the Diploma

The transition most students in this cluster find hardest, because the MYP assesses skills against criteria with generous time and the Diploma assesses a product written in two hours. The gap is a specific list rather than a general standard, which is what makes it cheap to close.

Six to eight sessions in the summer between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year, on algebraic automaticity and timed essay structure, is the best-value tutoring available to a family here and is bought by almost nobody - because the subject it helps has not started. For a commuting household it also lands in the one period with no school run in it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below names the criterion that usually costs marks, because that is the level at which Middle Years tutoring is either targeted or wasted.

MYP Mathematics, standard and extended

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the usual weak one: finding a rule is manageable, expressing it in correct general notation and justifying it is what scores and is rarely taught directly.

MYP Sciences

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Marks go on criteria B and C rather than A, because investigation design and data evaluation are skills most schemes of work assume rather than teach explicitly.

MYP Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. The critical-thinking criterion carries the marks students lose, because it requires source evaluation addressing provenance and perspective rather than a summary of content.

MYP Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students strong on analysis frequently score poorly on using language, where accuracy, register and range are assessed separately from ideas - a split that is invisible in one grade and obvious in the criterion marks.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Assessed by phase rather than year group, so two children in one class can be working at different phases, which parents are rarely told explicitly.

MYP Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Process documentation carries more marks than the finished product, which is why capable makers often score moderately and why the fix is cheap once named.

MYP Arts

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The developmental workbook and reflective responses carry substantial weight beside the final piece, so a student who only produces work forfeits the criteria that reward process.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. Written and reflective components matter, which regularly startles families who assume the subject is assessed on sport alone.

Approaches to learning skills

MYP 1-5

Research, communication, self-management, thinking and social skills, running across every subject. Work on self-management and research often raises grades in several subjects at once, which makes it unusually good value for a single short block.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the product. Coaching covers goal scoping, criteria interpretation and process-journal discipline. The student sets the goal, does the work, keeps the journal and writes the report.

Diploma bridging in mathematics

MYP 5 into DP1

Indices, surds, algebraic fractions, rearranging with the unknown appearing twice, function notation and expanding without hesitation - all assumed automatic from the first Diploma week. Six to eight summer sessions, and the cheapest decisive purchase in the programme.

Diploma bridging in writing

MYP 5 into DP1

Essay structure under timed conditions, command-term discipline, and argument built on evidence rather than assertion. The MYP rewards drafting and reflection; a Diploma paper rewards one well-structured answer produced to time, which catches strong MYP writers.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three purchases with defined ends, plus an honest account of the in-home option at this stage.

A term aimed at one criterion

The arrangement that suits the Middle Years Programme and most budgets. One 60-minute session a week for a term, targeting the specific criterion the school's breakdown identifies as weak, with content following the school's own units so nothing runs in parallel. A term has a known end, which makes the total known at the start.

  • Preceded by asking the school for the four criterion marks
  • Targets one named criterion rather than a whole subject
  • Follows the school's own units and assessment tasks
  • Slot timed to the bus, usually from 6pm on weekdays

Personal Project coaching block

Four to six sessions scheduled backwards from the school's deadline, starting with whether the goal is small enough to finish and specific enough to assess. The tutor questions the goal, explains the criteria and reviews the student's own journal and drafts. The student sets the goal, makes the product and writes every word.

  • Session count agreed in advance, so the total is known
  • Goal scoping before any work begins, which prevents the main failure
  • Process-journal habit established early rather than retrofitted
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts; nothing supplied

Summer bridging into the Diploma

Six to eight sessions between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year on the specific things the Diploma assumes: algebraic automaticity, timed essay structure and command-term discipline. The best-value tutoring in the programme, and for a commuting household it lands in the one period with no school run in it.

  • A defined skill list rather than an open revision course
  • Mathematics and writing covered separately
  • Timed conditions introduced deliberately
  • Finished before the first Diploma term begins

In-home MYP tutoring, and what the premium buys

Published in-home one-to-one rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, per Bestimate at 180 to 350 and advertised home-tutor rates at 200 to 500, with monthly packages at AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to an address in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE
  • Roughly AED 50-150 an hour of the in-home rate is travel
  • Presence in the room does not supply criterion literacy
  • The same money online buys more sessions or a criterion-literate tutor

01

The free step that usually shrinks the purchase

  • Ask for the four criterion marks out of eight, not the overall grade
  • Ask how many times each criterion has been assessed
  • Ask whether the mark reflects the most recent evidence or a term average
  • A localised problem is a term of targeted work rather than a year of general support
  • All three questions are free and none of them requires a tutor to answer

Before spending anything, ask the school for the criterion-level breakdown in the subject that worries you - the four criterion marks out of eight, not the overall grade. Most schools hold them, many will share them on a direct request, and the difference it makes to a tutoring decision is larger than any choice of provider.

The reason is that the four marks localise the problem. A science profile of 7, 7, 3, 2 says the content is understood and investigation design and data evaluation are not, which is a term of targeted work rather than a year of general science support. A mathematics profile weak only on investigating patterns says the student can calculate and cannot yet generalise and justify a rule, which is a handful of sessions.

Two further questions are worth asking alongside it, because they stop a misreading. How many times has each criterion been assessed? Early-year reports are noisy when some criteria have been assessed once and others three times. And does the mark reflect the most recent evidence or an average across the term? A single poor task in September should not still be dragging a criterion mark in May.

With those answers, a tutor can say in one session what a term should contain. Without them, any provider is guessing, and the guess is usually generous to itself: general support across the subject, or across three subjects, which is the most expensive possible response to a problem nobody has located.

What each AED band buys at this stage

The Middle Years Programme is the one stage where the lowest market band is genuinely competitive, which is worth saying plainly because it is not true at Diploma Higher Level. Every figure here was published by the provider named and read in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram rate - ours is quoted after the free trial against the work the breakdown identifies.

Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. For Middle Years content support - arithmetic fluency, structured writing, a topic that did not land - that band contains usable help. What it less often contains is somebody who can name the four criteria for your child's subject and teach against the descriptors, which is the narrower skill.

Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. At this stage the extra money should be buying criterion literacy specifically rather than greater subject depth, because the subject content in the Middle Years Programme is not where the difficulty lies for most students.

The specialist and premium bands - AED 200 to 450 and AED 500 to 650, with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650 - are hard to justify for Middle Years work in almost every case. Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range, with published online packages at AED 799 a month for eight sessions. For household context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year.

Middle Years purchases ranked by what they return

If the monthly figure is fixed, the order of spending matters more than the rate. The Middle Years Programme ranks unusually clearly, because one purchase sits outside the programme entirely and beats everything inside it, and because two of the others transfer across several subjects at once.

First is the summer bridging block between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year, if your child is at that point. Six to eight sessions on indices, surds, algebraic fractions, function notation, timed essay structure and command-term discipline. Nothing is urgent, the commute has gone, and the effect runs across two years of Diploma teaching rather than one term of Middle Years grades.

Second is the approaches-to-learning block: self-management and research skills, which run across every subject and frequently raise grades in several at once. Third is a criterion-targeted term in the single subject the breakdown names. Fourth is the Personal Project coaching block, which is finite and well defined but matters only in MYP 5.

At the bottom of the ranking sits open weekly support across two or three subjects, which is the easiest arrangement to sell and the hardest for a parent to evaluate afterwards. It is not useless - a child who enjoys the sessions and does the work will improve - but it costs several times the alternatives for progress nobody can attribute. The practical test before any purchase at this stage is whether you could state, in one sentence, what you expect to be different at the end of it. If the answer names a criterion and a subject, the money is well aimed. If it names a general hope, the criterion breakdown has not been read yet.

04

Why investigation design is the science criterion worth paying for

In the sciences, criterion A - knowing and understanding - is usually the strongest, because it is closest to conventional content teaching. Criteria B and C, inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating, are usually the weakest, because investigation design and data evaluation are skills most schemes of work assume rather than teach. The result is a student who knows the science and scores moderately.

That is good news financially, because it is a narrow and teachable gap. Criterion B asks for a testable research question, variables identified and explained, a method that controls what needs controlling, and justified choices. Students fail it in consistent ways: an untestable question, controlled variables listed with no mention of how they will be held constant, and no justification for range, interval or repeats.

Criterion C fails in a matching pattern: data presented without processing, processed without spread or uncertainty, graphed without a line of best fit, and an evaluation saying more repeats would have helped - which earns nothing - instead of naming the largest error source and proposing a specific change.

A handful of sessions on those two criteria produces a visible change in the criterion marks, and it is also the clearest investment in Diploma readiness available in MYP 4 and 5. The Diploma's scientific investigation is assessed against research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation for twenty-four marks, and it asks for precisely the skills criteria B and C are building.

05

Reading a 1 to 8 grade without overspending

Parents in these clusters ask whether a 4 or a 5 is a problem, and the honest answer is that the grade alone cannot tell you - which matters because panic is expensive. Four criterion marks out of eight each, converted using published boundaries, can produce the same overall grade from very different profiles, and only one of those profiles justifies a sustained purchase.

A flat profile of fours or fives across all four criteria usually reflects a student who is working steadily and has not yet been shown what the top bands look like. That responds to a short block aimed at the criterion with the clearest descriptor gap, not to a year of support. A profile with one collapsed criterion against three strong ones reflects a specific, nameable failure and responds to a specific, nameable intervention.

A genuinely weak profile across all four criteria in several subjects is a different situation, and it is the one case where a broader conversation with the school matters more than any tutoring purchase. Sometimes the cause is organisational or attendance-related rather than academic, and in those cases buying teaching is buying the wrong thing at full price.

MYP grades are also not percentages, and a 5 is not half marks - a point worth stating because families arriving from percentage-based systems routinely assume the worst. The programme is reporting what a student can currently do against published descriptors, which is more informative than a percentage and much less familiar.

06

The Personal Project, and the two failures that cost money

The Personal Project is the Middle Years Programme's largest independent undertaking, assessed against published criteria covering planning, applying skills, reflecting and the product, with a process journal throughout and a report at the end. It is also the purchase where getting the shape right matters most, because the two dominant failures both happen early and neither can be fixed late.

The first is a goal too large and too vague. A student intending to build an application, compose an album or run an event discovers in the final month that the product cannot be completed and the criteria cannot be evidenced. The remedy is a scoping conversation in the first fortnight, testing the goal against both assessability and the available weeks - half a session, and the best-value item in the whole block.

The cheapest insurance in the whole Personal Project is a weekly journal habit started in the first month, and it is the one thing an International City family can set up tonight without buying a single session. It exists because of the second dominant failure: a process journal written retrospectively. The journal is meant to be contemporaneous evidence of planning, decision-making and reflection, and a fortnight of entries reconstructed the night before submission reads exactly like what it is. Fifteen minutes a week, kept honestly from the start, protects two criteria that cannot be recovered afterwards at any price.

The boundary matters here more than anywhere else in the programme, because the search results this page sits in include operators who sell completed coursework. The student sets the goal, does the work, keeps the journal and writes the report. A tutor interrogates the goal, explains what each criterion rewards, asks the questions a supervisor would ask, and comments on the student's own drafts. A malpractice finding falls on the student.

07

Fitting a session into a commuting week

A Middle Years student travelling out of these clusters to Al Warqa, Al Qusais, Silicon Oasis or Mirdif spends an hour or more a day on the journey, and the evening that remains has homework in it. The good news is that the Middle Years load is lighter than the Diploma load, so one weekly session plus its homework fits comfortably - which is not true two years later.

The practical constraint at this age is tiredness rather than timetable. A child who has been travelling since seven in the morning is genuinely spent by five, and a session booked then is often an hour nobody benefits from. From these clusters a 6pm start is realistic, and for younger Middle Years students a weekend morning frequently produces more than any weekday slot even though the weekday slot looks more convenient.

The other thing worth protecting is the work between sessions. A session with no homework after it delivers roughly a third of its value at the full price, and homework with no slot in the week displaces what the school set. Agreeing both - the work and the evening it happens in - is free and roughly triples the return on everything else.

During Ramadan the pattern should change deliberately. School days shorten so the bus returns earlier, but late-afternoon concentration is poor and a session at four is often wasted. Weekend mornings and post-Iftar slots work. Because no tutor is travelling, changing the pattern is a scheduling decision rather than a logistical one, and it should be fixed before the month starts.

08

Arabic, Islamic Education and the mandatory subjects

Middle Years students in Dubai also carry the mandatory UAE subjects, and new arrivals in these clusters are regularly surprised by this at the first report rather than at the open day. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's guidance states the requirements must be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year.

The rules are specific. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, with Arabic primary for Social Studies for Arab students and the school's licensed-curriculum language for non-Arabs.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools must also ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects, which is a concrete point a parent can ask about directly.

What constrains tutoring is a content rule: for these subjects, using any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. Support for Arabic as an additional language is ordinary language teaching, freely available, and in the Middle Years Programme it maps onto the language acquisition phases. Help with the mandatory Islamic Education and Social Studies content needs a conversation with the school about acceptable material first.

09

What to ask before paying, and what we do not claim

Five questions, deliberately about money and accountability. Can you name the four criteria for my child's subject? Does the individual teaching my child hold a current MoHRE private tuition work permit, and may I see it? Is the figure per hour or per session, and does it include VAT? What is the replacement policy if the match fails? And what will you do with the Personal Project, and what will you refuse to do?

The first question is the Middle Years-specific one, and it is the sharpest. A tutor who cannot name the four criteria for the subject is offering general secondary tutoring, which may be perfectly good and should be priced at the lower band accordingly. Paying the qualified band for general support is the commonest overspend at this stage.

On the permit: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so disregard any amount quoted at you. Because the permit is free, it cannot legitimately be priced into a rate. It applies regardless of the student's age or programme.

And what we do not claim: no office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE; no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai; no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE or the IB; no promises about grades and no published predicted scores; no ratings we cannot evidence with countable dated reviews; and no IB material supplied as downloads, since we cite and link the official sources instead.

Where we tutor

The clusters, and where the Middle Years Programme is taught

No MYP is taught inside International City, so this is a commuting story - and the journey is part of what any tutoring arrangement has to absorb.

China Cluster and Dragon Mart

The commercial core with the district's slowest afternoon traffic. The cluster where a travelling tutor's journey is hardest to justify at any rate, and where weekend mornings work best.

England and France Clusters

Dense residential blocks feeding mainly the Al Warqa and Al Qusais schools, with many working households and consequently strong demand for weekend slots over weekday evenings.

Greece, Italy and Spain Clusters

The southern blocks nearest the Ras Al Khor road, with the quickest route towards Garhoud, Nad Al Hamar and Mirdif - where the IB continuum schools actually are.

Persia and Russia Clusters

Heavily bus-dependent, so route timings rather than traffic set the earliest realistic session. A fixed slot matters more here than anywhere else in the district.

Morocco Cluster and Warsan Village

The lower-density edge towards the Dubai-Hatta road, from which the Silicon Oasis and Academic City schools are reachable while avoiding the worst interchange delays.

Al Warqa

Universal American School carries IB programmes here, making it the shortest IB run from these clusters at around twenty minutes on a normal morning.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the full IB continuum including the MYP, so a child can move from the Primary Years through to the Diploma in one school. A longer run chosen deliberately.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A dense older school cluster reached via Al Rashidiya, largely British and Indian curriculum, so MYP families here are usually travelling further for the programme itself.

Al Garhoud and Nad Al Sheba

Deira International School and GEMS Modern Academy among others, offering IB programmes through to the Diploma. The longest runs from the clusters and chosen for continuity.

Ask the school for the criterion marks

The four criterion marks out of eight in the subject that worries you, plus how many times each has been assessed. It is free, it localises the problem, and it routinely turns a three-subject arrangement into a single term aimed at one criterion.

  2. 02

Tell us the subject, the criterion and the budget

Including the monthly figure, which changes the recommendation. At this stage the lowest market band is genuinely usable for content support, so we would rather point you at the right band than sell you a higher one.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson and a written note

A real lesson on the actual criterion in question, with the student working. Afterwards a plain summary of what the tutor found and what a term would target. Say no and nothing further is owed, and the figure is only quoted after this.

  4. 04

Buy a term, not a year

A term has a known end and a known total, and it is long enough for one criterion to move visibly. Open weekly arrangements across several subjects cost several times as much and leave nobody able to say what changed.

  5. 05

    Protect the homework slot

A session with no work after it delivers about a third of its value at the full price, and work with no slot in the week displaces what the school set. We agree both, which costs nothing and roughly triples the return.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We send you to the school first

The four criterion marks are free, they localise the problem, and they usually shrink the purchase. Asking for them before contacting any tutor is advice against our own interest, and it is still the right first step at this stage.

We will point you at a cheaper band

For Middle Years content support the AED 45 to 150 band genuinely works, which is not true at Diploma Higher Level. The extra money at the qualified band should be buying criterion literacy specifically, not generic subject depth.

The purchase nobody makes, ranked first

Six to eight summer sessions between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year, on algebraic automaticity and timed essay structure. It affects two years of Diploma teaching and is bought by almost nobody because the subject it helps has not started.

Terms, not years

A term aimed at one named criterion has a known end and an evaluable result. Open weekly support across two or three subjects is the easiest arrangement to sell and the hardest for a parent to assess afterwards.

Every AED figure attributed and dated

Three of the six leading pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote dollars. Ours name the provider and the month they were read, and none is presented as our own rate.

A firm line on the Personal Project

The student sets the goal, does the work, keeps the journal and writes the report; we question the goal, explain criteria and comment on drafts. Operators in these search results sell completed coursework, and that finding lands on a sixteen-year-old.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in International City: your questions answered

Can I get an IB MYP tutor in International City?+

Yes, as one-to-one online tuition rather than a tutor coming to your flat, since IB Gram offers home visits only in India. No MYP is taught inside International City, so families here already travel to Al Warqa, Mirdif or further for the programme itself. The relevant scarcity for Middle Years tutoring is not subject knowledge but criterion literacy - a tutor who cannot name the four criteria for your child's subject is offering general secondary tutoring.

What should we ask the school before paying for anything?+

The four criterion marks out of eight in the subject that worries you, not the overall grade. Also how many times each criterion has been assessed, because early-year reports are noisy when some have been assessed once and others three times, and whether the mark reflects the most recent evidence or a term average. All three questions are free and they routinely turn a three-subject arrangement into one term aimed at a single criterion.

Is a cheap tutor good enough for the Middle Years Programme?+

For content support, often yes - and this is the one stage where that is true. Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from 33 to 52, and that band handles arithmetic fluency, structured writing and a topic that did not land. What it less often contains is criterion literacy, which is the narrower skill and the thing the qualified band should be buying.

How much should a Middle Years arrangement cost per month?+

Bestimate's 2026 estimates for a weekly one-hour session put budget support at AED 240 to 600 a month and mid-range at AED 600 to 1,200, with published online packages at AED 799 a month for eight sessions. The specialist and premium bands - AED 200 to 450 and AED 500 to 650 - are priced for Diploma Higher Level and are hard to justify for Middle Years work. Those are market figures from the sources named, not IB Gram rates.

Which Middle Years purchase gives the best return?+

The summer bridging block between MYP 5 and the first Diploma year, if your child is at that point. Six to eight sessions on indices, surds, algebraic fractions, function notation, timed essay structure and command-term discipline. Nothing is urgent, the commute has gone for the summer, and the effect runs across two years of Diploma teaching rather than one term of Middle Years grades. Almost nobody buys it, because the subject it helps has not begun.

Why does my son score well on content and poorly overall in science?+

Almost certainly criteria B and C. Knowing and understanding is closest to conventional content teaching and is usually strongest; inquiring and designing asks for a testable question, identified variables and a justified method, and processing and evaluating asks for processed data and an evaluation of method and reliability. Most schemes of work assume rather than teach those, so a student who knows the science scores moderately. A handful of sessions moves both visibly.

Is a grade 5 in the MYP something to worry about?+

The grade alone cannot tell you, which matters because panic is expensive. A flat profile of fives usually reflects steady work and a student who has not been shown what the top bands look like, which responds to a short block rather than a year of support. A profile with one collapsed criterion against three strong ones is a specific nameable failure. And MYP grades are not percentages - a 5 is not half marks.

Which maths criterion do students lose most marks on?+

Investigating patterns, consistently. It asks a student to find a rule, express it in correct general notation and then justify it. Finding the rule is the part most students manage; expressing and justifying it is the part that scores and is rarely taught directly. The structure of a strong response is consistent enough that a handful of sessions produces a visible change in the criterion mark, which makes it one of the most efficient targets in the programme.

How should the Personal Project money be spent?+

On scoping first and drafting last. Four to six sessions scheduled backwards from the school's deadline, with the first half session spent testing whether the goal is small enough to finish and specific enough to assess. The two dominant failures - a goal too large and a process journal written retrospectively - both happen in the first month and neither can be fixed in the last. The scoping conversation is the best-value item in the whole block.

What may a tutor do with the Personal Project?+

Interrogate the goal, explain what each criterion rewards, ask the questions a supervisor would ask, and read and comment on your child's own drafts and journal entries. A tutor may not choose the goal, make the product, write journal entries or supply text for the report. The search results this page sits in include operators selling completed coursework outright, and a malpractice finding from that falls on the student rather than on the seller.

Should we pay for help with the maths route decision?+

Only if Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is a realistic ambition later. Many schools split mathematics into standard and extended routes at the end of MYP 3, and the extended route builds the algebraic fluency the Diploma assumes. If it matters, a term of targeted work producing marked evidence at the extended route is better value than two years of general support. Ask the school which route they intend and what evidence would change their view.

What time can a Middle Years session start from these clusters?+

Around six on a weekday, and for younger students a weekend morning often produces more even though the weekday slot looks more convenient. The constraint at this age is tiredness rather than timetable: a child travelling since seven in the morning is genuinely spent by five, so a session booked then is frequently an hour nobody benefits from. Because no tutor is travelling, a weekend slot costs nothing extra to arrange.

Does my child take Arabic and Islamic Education in an MYP school here?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's guidance requiring implementation from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must run separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes strictly prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on 40-minute lesson units, with any such lesson advised to run at least 25 minutes.

Can we get help with Arabic as an additional language?+

Yes, and it maps onto the MYP language acquisition phases, which is worth knowing because students are assessed by phase rather than by year group - two children in the same class can be working at different phases and parents are rarely told so explicitly. Note the constraint on the mandatory subjects: for Islamic Education and Social Studies, using different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is prohibited, so ask the school what material it will accept first.

Is a permit needed for someone tutoring Middle Years subjects?+

Yes, and it applies regardless of the programme or the student's age. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, so it cannot legitimately be priced into a rate. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any figure quoted at you as unverified.

Ask the school for four numbers first

If your child is in the Middle Years Programme and you live in International City, the most useful thing you can do before contacting any tutor is ask the school for the four criterion marks in the subject that worries you. With those, plus the monthly figure you have in mind, we can say which band is appropriate, whether a term aimed at one criterion is the right shape, and whether the summer bridging block would be worth more than anything happening now. The trial lesson is free; lessons are one-to-one and online, on Gulf Standard Time.
