IB Physics Tutor in International City

Hiring an IB physics tutor in International City runs into a problem the subject has nowhere else: the laboratory is a bus ride away. There is no IB school in the district, so a Diploma physicist here cannot return after dinner for one more set of readings. This page is about designing an investigation that can be finished inside timetabled sessions, and about the physics that can be taught at home. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Investigation feasibility checked against timetabled laboratory time
  • Uncertainty and graph work taught at home, where the marks are
  • Sessions timed to the bus, with weekend mornings for papers
  • Free trial lesson with a written diagnosis, no commitment

IB & IGCSE in International City

When the laboratory is a bus ride away

Every Diploma science carries a scientific investigation worth roughly a fifth of the subject grade, assessed against four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. For most students the hard part is the analysis. For a student travelling out of International City to Silicon Oasis, Al Warqa or Mirdif, the hard part is getting back into the laboratory.

This is not a small operational detail. A student who lives near their school can return at four for twenty more minutes of readings, or repeat a run that went wrong, or check an instrument they were unsure about. A student in the Persia Cluster whose school is in Silicon Oasis cannot, because the bus has gone and the journey is not one a working household makes twice in an evening. So the investigation has to be designed to be finishable in the laboratory time the school timetables, and that design decision happens weeks before any data exists.

The consequence is that feasibility becomes the first coaching conversation rather than a later one. What apparatus does the school actually have? How many timetabled sessions are available before the deadline? What is the smallest division on the instruments, and what uncertainty does that imply for the final result? Can the temperature be held constant, and with what? Half an hour on those questions is worth more than any amount of help with the write-up.

The reassuring half of the picture is that most of the marks sit in work that can be done at home. Framing a research question, identifying and controlling variables, choosing a range and interval, propagating uncertainty, linearising a relationship, extracting a quantity from a gradient, calculating gradient uncertainty, and writing an evaluation that names the dominant error source. Not one of those requires a bench, and together they account for far more of the twenty-four available marks than the measuring itself ever does.

The same is true of the written papers. Physics marks are mostly lost to three things that have nothing to do with apparatus: explanations written in everyday language rather than with defined quantities, uncertainty work nobody taught, and graph questions where the student plots accurately and cannot say what the gradient represents. All three are teachable on a shared screen with real data.

IB Gram delivers physics tuition online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE - home visits are an India-only service. For this subject in this district that is not a compromise: a travelling tutor cannot get your child into a laboratory either, and the pool of Higher Level physics specialists reachable from Al Warsan by car is effectively empty.

At a glance

  • The investigation carries 24 marks across four criteria of six each
  • No IB World School sits inside International City; the laboratory is always a journey away
  • Design the investigation to finish inside timetabled sessions, not around extra visits
  • Most investigation marks sit in design, uncertainty, graphs and evaluation, all doable at home
  • Written-paper losses: everyday-language explanations, untaught uncertainty, uninterpreted gradients
  • Lessons are one-to-one and online; no tutor travels to a UAE address

MYP sciences into Diploma physics

Graded 1 to 8 against knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Marks go on criteria B and C rather than A, because investigation design and data evaluation are skills most schemes of work assume rather than teach - and they are exactly what the Diploma then requires.

For a commuting student the Middle Years investigations are the rehearsal that matters, because they are where the habit of designing something executable in one lesson is either formed or not. A student used to open-ended investigations with unlimited laboratory time arrives in the Diploma designing something they cannot finish.

SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics, Standard Level

The full set of themes at standard depth with written papers and the scientific investigation. The presenting problem is often mathematical rather than conceptual: rearranging equations, handling powers of ten, and reading a graph quantitatively under time pressure. That is diagnosable in one session.

Standard Level physics requests from these clusters frequently turn out to need mathematics support inside a physics context rather than physics teaching. It is a legitimate purchase and it should be named, because it changes who the right tutor is and how long the work takes. One diagnostic session settles it.

HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics, Higher Level

Additional content across every theme, greater mathematical demand and longer papers. The usual requirement for physics and engineering degrees, and frequently taken alongside Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, which is a heavy quantitative load over two years.

This is the hardest combination we staff, particularly in the fortnight either side of mock examinations when demand across the emirate concentrates on the same specialists. From this district the local travelling pool is empty, so online matching is the only route to a Higher Level physics specialist at all - and we still say plainly when none is free.

IAAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The scientific investigation

One independent investigation worth twenty-four marks across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It is the only part of the grade a student fully controls, and in this district it is also the part most constrained by logistics rather than by ability.

The binding constraint is laboratory access, which is why the feasibility conversation comes before anything else. A design needing an extra afternoon of readings is a design that will not be completed from these clusters, and discovering that after a week of data collection costs more than the entire coaching block.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What physics actually requires, separated into the parts that need a laboratory and the parts that do not.

Uncertainty and error propagation

SL and HL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through products, quotients and powers, and uncertainty in a gradient. Examined directly in data-analysis questions, central to the investigation's evaluation, mechanical in its rules, and almost never taught as a lesson of its own.

Graph work and linearisation

SL and HL

Rearranging an equation into straight-line form, choosing what to plot against what, and extracting a physical quantity from the gradient or intercept. The question is rarely 'plot this' but 'what does the gradient represent', and that is where the marks sit.

Experimental design and variable control

SL and HL

Independent, dependent and controlled variables, range and interval choice, repeat readings, and the systematic and random error distinction. Assessed in the research design criterion and in written method questions, and the weakest part of almost every first draft.

Space, time and motion

SL and HL

Kinematics, forces, momentum, energy and circular motion, with rigid-body and relativity content at Higher Level. Marks go on free-body diagrams with a force missing and on momentum questions where no direction convention is stated before the arithmetic.

The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Thermal physics, gas laws and the kinetic model. The recurring error is explaining temperature change in terms of heat as a substance that flows rather than as energy transferred, which mark schemes treat as a misconception rather than loose phrasing.

Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Oscillations, wave properties, superposition, standing waves, diffraction and interference. Path-difference questions reward drawing the geometry first; students who attempt them algebraically from memory forfeit most of the available marks.

Fields

SL and HL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, potential, circuits and electromagnetic induction. The largest single source of confusion in the course, chiefly because potential and field strength get conflated and induction directions are asserted rather than derived.

Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Radioactive decay, binding energy, fission and fusion, the photoelectric effect and quantum phenomena. Mark loss is mostly numerical discipline: powers of ten, unit prefixes and electronvolt conversions applied inconsistently inside one calculation.

Command-term discipline

SL and HL

State, outline, describe, explain, deduce, determine, sketch and compare each specify a different answer with a different mark allocation. Students answer nearly all of them as 'describe', which is the most comfortable mode and the lowest scoring on extended responses.

The mathematics physics assumes

SL and HL

Rearranging multi-variable equations, logarithms, small-angle approximations, resolving vectors with trigonometry and standard-form arithmetic at speed. Physics does not teach these and penalises their absence throughout, which is why some physics tutoring is properly mathematics tutoring.

Investigation coaching from home

SL and HL

Research-question framing, feasibility against the school's apparatus and timetable, variable control, uncertainty treatment, graph work and the evaluation the criteria reward. All of it on the student's own data. The student designs, measures and writes.

Apparatus handling

SL and HL

The one part that must happen at school. Reading instruments, following a method under time pressure and recording as you go. For a commuting student the implication is to use every timetabled laboratory session fully, because there is no second chance later in the day.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements built around the laboratory constraint, plus a straight answer on in-home tuition.

Feasibility and design block, before any data

Two or three sessions at the start of the investigation, spent entirely on whether the proposed research question can be answered with the apparatus the school has, in the timetabled sessions available, at the precision the question needs. It is the cheapest block in the whole arrangement and the one that prevents the commonest failure from this district.

  • Apparatus list and timetabled session count established first
  • Instrument resolution checked against the uncertainty it implies
  • Method designed to be completable without a return visit
  • Variables identified and the control method specified, not just named

Weekly sessions on uncertainty, graphs and command terms

One 60-minute session a week on the theme the class is covering, with the transferable skills built in parallel rather than saved for the investigation. Uncertainty, linearisation and command-term discipline are where the recoverable marks sit, and all three are taught from home on real datasets.

  • Follows the school's scheme of work for theme content
  • Uncertainty and graph skills built from the first term
  • Slot timed to the bus, usually from 6pm on weekdays
  • Error log maintained and checked for recurrence

Weekend morning for data-analysis papers

Data-based questions and full papers sat to time, then walked through against the published mark scheme. Physics data questions need a clear head and sustained attention, which is not available on a weekday evening after an hour on a bus, and the weekend slot competes with no school homework.

  • Data-analysis question sets worked under timed conditions
  • Graph and uncertainty questions practised repeatedly
  • Mark scheme walked through rather than a score reported
  • Usually one weekend morning a week in the second Diploma year

In-home physics tutoring, honestly

Dubai has tutors who travel, at published in-home one-to-one rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel per Bestimate's 2026 table and advertised home-tutor rates. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For physics the decisive point is that a travelling tutor cannot get your child into a laboratory either.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to an address in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE
  • The in-home premium is roughly AED 50-150 an hour of travel
  • Apparatus work happens at school under either arrangement
  • The travelling pool of Higher Level physics specialists here is effectively empty

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in International City

01

Designing an investigation you can actually finish

The question to answer before anything else is how many timetabled laboratory sessions exist between now and the school's deadline. Ask the teacher, get a number, and design within it. From these clusters there is no realistic extra afternoon, so an investigation needing one is an investigation that will be submitted incomplete - and incomplete data damages three of the four criteria at once, not just one.

Within that constraint, the designs that work are the ones with a short, repeatable measurement cycle and a tolerant apparatus requirement. A pendulum or spring oscillation study, a resistance-against-length investigation, a terminal velocity measurement, a lens or refraction study, or a cooling curve. Each produces usable data in a single session with repeats, and each has a relationship that linearises cleanly, which the data-analysis criterion rewards.

The designs that fail from this district are the ones needing precision the school's instruments cannot deliver, or temperature control the laboratory cannot sustain, or a number of runs that will not fit the available sessions. Those are not bad physics - they are good physics in the wrong circumstances, and a student who discovers that in week three has lost the time they most needed.

The table below sets out common designs with what each needs and where each tends to fail. Treat the apparatus column as a checklist to take to the teacher rather than an assumption, because laboratory provision varies considerably between schools a few kilometres apart in this part of Dubai.

PHYSICS INVESTIGATION DESIGNS AND THEIR FEASIBILITY
DesignWhat is measuredApparatus and time neededWhere it fails from this district
Pendulum period against lengthTime for a set number of oscillationsClamp, string, timer; one session with repeatsRarely fails; good first choice
Resistance against wire lengthPotential difference and current along a wirePower supply, meters, wire; one sessionWire heating if current is too high; plan the range
Spring extension and oscillationExtension and period against massSprings, masses, timer; one sessionSpring exceeding its elastic limit; check the mass range
Terminal velocity in a fluidFall time over a measured distanceTube, fluid, timer; one session with repeatsTiming precision; needs many repeats, so plan the count
Refraction or lens focal lengthAngles or image distancesOptical bench, lenses, protractor; one sessionDarkened room availability; book it in advance
Cooling curve against a variableTemperature against timeThermometer or probe, insulation; one long sessionNeeds a sustained session; often the hardest to fit
Anything requiring a water bath at fixed temperatureTemperature-dependent quantityWater bath, stable supply; multiple sessionsUsually not completable without a return visit
02

The marks that do not need a laboratory

  • Absolute uncertainty from instrument resolution or the spread of repeats
  • Add absolute uncertainties when adding or subtracting quantities
  • Add percentage uncertainties when multiplying or dividing
  • Multiply percentage uncertainty by the power when raising to a power
  • Gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines through the error bars

This is the reassuring arithmetic. Of the twenty-four investigation marks, the measuring itself earns none directly. Research design is six marks for the question, the variables, the method and the justification - all decided before the apparatus is touched. Data analysis is six for processing, uncertainty treatment and presentation. Conclusion is six for a justified answer in scientific context. Evaluation is six for specific limitations and realistic improvements.

So at least eighteen of the twenty-four marks are earned away from the bench, and the remaining six depend on a method designed away from it too. For a student who cannot return to the laboratory, that is the whole argument for spending coaching time on design, uncertainty and evaluation rather than on technique with a clamp stand.

The same holds in the written papers, where the recoverable marks cluster in three places. Uncertainty: five mechanical rules that cover nearly every question and which almost no scheme of work teaches as a lesson. Graph linearisation: rearranging the equation into straight-line form, reading the axes and the gradient's meaning off that rearrangement, and only then plotting. Command terms: explain means causes, describe means features, deduce means a conclusion from given information, determine means a numerical answer with working.

None of those three needs equipment, and together they are worth more across a set of physics papers than any single theme. A student who can propagate uncertainty, linearise a relationship and read a command term correctly will outscore a student who knows more physics and does none of those things, which is an uncomfortable fact and a useful one.

A physics week with an hour of travel in it

Physics divides into content that needs sustained attention and skills that respond to short practice, and a commuting student has very little of the first and some of the second. The arrangement that works puts the sustained work at the weekend and the skills practice on weekday evenings, rather than trying to do everything in one weekday hour.

Specifically: the weekday session carries theme content and the mark-scheme walkthrough of recent work, because that can be done in sixty minutes with a tired student if the material is already familiar. The weekend morning carries data-analysis question sets and full papers, because those need two to three hours and a clear head. Short weekday practice carries uncertainty calculations and command-term rewriting, which take fifteen minutes and improve through repetition.

The reason to separate them deliberately is that physics data questions punish fatigue more than most subjects. A student who misreads an axis at seven in the evening after a long bus journey has not learned anything about graphs; they have learned that graphs are confusing. The same student at ten on a Saturday morning gets it right and builds the habit the paper rewards.

The table below sets out the week. As with every plan on this site, it is deliberately modest, because an ambitious schedule abandoned in October is worth less than a sustainable one that runs to May. The test is whether it still happens on a bad week rather than a good one.

04

Why physics answers that are true still score badly

The most frustrating thing a parent sees in physics is an answer that is correct, well expressed and worth two marks out of five. The cause is almost always the command term. Explain requires the causes and the physical reasoning. Describe requires the features without the causes. Deduce requires a conclusion reached from information given. Determine requires a numerical answer with working shown.

Students answer nearly all of them as describe, because describing is the most comfortable mode and the one school work rewards most often. The fix is mechanical and quick: underline the command term before writing anything, and know what each one requires. A fortnight of deliberate practice on this alone moves marks across every paper, which is why technique work outperforms content revision in the final weeks.

The second half of the same problem is the mark allocation printed beside the question. A four-mark explanation wants four distinct creditable points, and a student who writes one point in beautiful detail has lost three marks to a number printed in bold on the page. Teaching students to plan an answer against its allocation takes one session and lasts the whole course.

The third is the habit of writing physics in everyday language. 'The current gets used up', 'heat flows into the object', 'the force pushes it round the corner' - each describes something real and none of them names the quantity the mark scheme wants. Replacing that vocabulary is slow but permanent, and it is the single clearest difference between a mid-band and a top-band extended response.

05

Higher Level, the commute, and the subject combination

Higher Level physics adds content across every theme and expects the mathematics to be handled fluently rather than carefully. For a student losing ten hours a week to travel, that matters in a practical way: the course assumes homework time that this student has less of, so the subject combination needs thinking about rather than assuming.

Higher Level physics with Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is a common engineering-track pairing and a genuinely heavy quantitative load. Adding a third demanding written subject produces a second-year January that effort alone will not solve, and from these clusters an hour a day of that effort is already spent on a bus. If choices are still open, map the deadlines across both years rather than looking only at interest.

The laboratory question also bears on subject choice, which nobody mentions at options evenings. Some subjects' internal assessments require apparatus access and some require only reading and writing. For a student who cannot easily return to school, a combination with three laboratory-based assessments landing in the same term is harder than the same combination would be for a student living next door to the school.

On university entry: Higher Level physics is the usual requirement for physics and engineering degrees and Standard Level is frequently insufficient for those routes. Read the published requirements for the specific institutions and courses during the first Diploma year, because dropping from Higher to Standard Level is generally possible and moving up usually is not.

06

Counting the physics year backwards

UAE schools sit the May examination session. For physics the internal calendar is the binding one, because the investigation deadline typically lands in the second half of the first Diploma year or early in the second, where it collides with mock examinations, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay inside a few weeks in January and February.

Counting backwards produces a clear order for a commuting student. Uncertainty and graph skills built in the first term of the first year, before they start costing marks in data questions. Investigation feasibility checked against the apparatus list and the timetabled session count well before data collection. Data collected and processed before mock preparation begins. Timed data-analysis questions started in the first term of the second year rather than after the mocks.

We publish no specific IB session or results dates on this site. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, and a wrong date on a page a family plans around is worse than no date at all, so confirm every IB date with your child's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org. For Cambridge and Pearson qualifications the dates are sourced: Cambridge runs June and November series for UAE candidates, with the February and March series offered to India only, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and in November.

Ramadan falls inside the revision period in most years, and for physics the implication is specific. The school day shortens, which frees the afternoon, but data-analysis work in the late afternoon during the month is usually poor value. Weekend mornings and post-Iftar slots work. Fix the pattern before the month begins, and remember that laboratory sessions may also be rearranged, which affects any investigation still in progress.

07

The academic-honesty line on an investigation

This needs stating plainly because the search results this page sits in include an operator selling completed internal assessments at a published price. Under IB academic-honesty rules, submitting work that is not the student's own is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the candidate: a subject grade withheld, or the Diploma itself. The seller is not exposed. The seventeen-year-old is.

So the boundary in operational terms. A tutor may test whether a research question is feasible with the school's apparatus and timetable. May explain what each of the four criteria rewards and what a strong response looks like in general terms. May teach uncertainty propagation, linearisation and gradient uncertainty on the student's own measurements. May read a draft and give written feedback the student then acts on.

A tutor may not choose the research question, design the method, take or supply data, process the data, produce the graphs, or provide text that ends up in the report. The working test is whether the student could explain, unprompted and without notes, why every number and every sentence is there. Applied honestly this makes coaching slower, because a draft comes back with questions rather than corrections.

We also supply no IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads. We cite and link the official sources, which is both the correct position on copyright and the only way to be certain the version is current. Schools hold past papers and the subject teacher is usually the quickest route to the right ones.

08

What it costs, and what we do not claim

Every figure here was published by the provider named and read in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram rate. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB specialists run AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium named tutors reach AED 500 to 650, with BartyED at AED 650. In-home one-to-one including travel runs AED 180 to 500.

Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, with published online packages at AED 799 a month for eight sessions. For Higher Level physics the band below AED 100 an hour rarely contains anybody who teaches the level, which is the most useful thing to know about it.

On availability, we publish the limit rather than hiding it. Higher Level physics in the fortnight either side of mock examinations is the hardest thing on our list, because demand across the emirate concentrates on the same people in the same weeks. In that case you get a realistic wait, or adjacent mathematics support with the boundary stated plainly, or a refusal - not a Standard Level tutor in front of a Higher Level candidate.

And what we do not claim: no office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE; no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai; no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson; no promises about grades and no published predicted scores. On regulation: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no fine schedule published.

Where we tutor

The clusters, and the laboratories they travel to

What matters for physics here is not the distance to a tutor but the distance to a laboratory, and that varies by cluster in ways worth planning around.

China Cluster and Dragon Mart

The commercial core with the district's slowest afternoon traffic. Students here generally travel to Silicon Oasis, which makes a return visit to the laboratory the least realistic of any cluster.

England and France Clusters

Dense residential blocks feeding mainly Al Warqa and Al Qusais. The shortest school run in the district, so a second visit is conceivable at a weekend if the school allows it, though rarely on a weekday.

Greece, Italy and Spain Clusters

The southern blocks nearest the Ras Al Khor road, with the quickest route towards Garhoud, Nad Al Hamar and Mirdif. The best-placed clusters for reaching a Nad Al Sheba or Garhoud laboratory.

Persia and Russia Clusters

Heavily bus-dependent, so once the bus has gone the school is effectively out of reach for the day. Investigation designs from here must be completable in timetabled sessions without exception.

Morocco Cluster and Warsan Village

The lower-density edge towards the Dubai-Hatta road, with Silicon Oasis and Academic City reachable while avoiding the worst interchange delays. Marginally better for a weekend laboratory visit.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

The nearest Diploma physics teaching, at GEMS Wellington Academy. Twenty-five to thirty minutes on a clear morning and considerably longer by bus in the afternoon.

Al Warqa

Universal American School carries IB programmes here, making this the shortest IB run from these clusters at about twenty minutes on a normal morning.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the full IB continuum, so Middle Years sciences and Diploma physics sit in one school with the same laboratory staff and apparatus.

Al Garhoud and Nad Al Sheba

Deira International School, GEMS Modern Academy and North London Collegiate School Dubai among others, generally with the deepest laboratory provision in this part of the city.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Find out how many laboratory sessions are left

Ask the physics teacher for the number of timetabled sessions between now and the investigation deadline, and for the apparatus list. From these clusters there is no extra afternoon, so the design has to fit the number you are given.

  2. 02

    Send one marked physics paper

Marks lost on extended responses point to command terms. Marks lost on data questions point to uncertainty and graph work. Marks lost across one theme point to content. Those are three different plans, and the paper settles it in twenty minutes.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson and a written note

A real lesson on real physics with the student working. Afterwards a plain summary: whether the problem is content, numbers or writing, what the available weeks will target, and whether the investigation design is feasible as it stands.

  4. 04

    Split the week deliberately

Theme content and walkthrough in the weekday session, fifteen minutes of uncertainty and command-term practice on two other evenings, and data-analysis or full papers on a weekend morning. Data work punishes fatigue more than any other part of physics.

  5. 05

    Use every laboratory session fully

The one thing a tutor cannot do for a student in this district is get them into a laboratory. Every timetabled session should be treated as the only chance it is - instruments checked, repeats taken, readings recorded as they happen rather than reconstructed later.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Feasibility before physics on the investigation

From these clusters there is no extra afternoon in the laboratory, so a design needing one will be submitted incomplete - which damages three criteria at once. Half an hour on apparatus, instrument resolution and session count prevents the commonest failure here.

Eighteen of twenty-four marks are earned away from the bench

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation are all decided or produced outside the laboratory. For a student who cannot return to school, that is where coaching time belongs rather than on apparatus technique.

Uncertainty taught as five mechanical rules

Absolute from resolution, add absolutes when adding, add percentages when multiplying, multiply by the power, gradient from maximum and minimum lines. They cover nearly every uncertainty question in the course and almost no scheme of work teaches them as a lesson.

Data work moved to the weekend on purpose

Graph and data-analysis questions punish fatigue more than any other part of physics. A student who misreads an axis at seven in the evening after a bus journey learns that graphs are confusing rather than how to read one.

Command terms as a fortnight of work

Explain means causes, describe means features, deduce means a conclusion from given information. Students answer everything as describe, and fixing that moves marks across every paper faster than any content revision.

We say when Higher Level is unavailable

Higher Level physics around the mock window is the hardest combination we staff, because demand across the emirate lands in the same fortnight. You hear that at the enquiry stage with a realistic wait rather than meeting a Standard Level tutor.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in International City: your questions answered

Can I get an IB physics tutor in International City?+

Yes, as one-to-one online tuition rather than a tutor coming to your flat, since IB Gram offers home visits only in India. For physics the decisive point is that a travelling tutor could not get your child into a laboratory either - apparatus work happens at school under any arrangement. What a tutor can do is everything around it, which is where at least eighteen of the twenty-four investigation marks and most written-paper marks actually sit.

How does my child do a physics investigation when school is a bus ride away?+

By designing it to be completable in the timetabled laboratory sessions available, which means asking the teacher for that number and for the apparatus list before choosing a research question. From these clusters there is no realistic extra afternoon, and a design needing one gets submitted with incomplete data - which damages research design, data analysis and conclusion simultaneously rather than just one criterion.

Which investigation designs work best for a commuting student?+

The ones with a short repeatable measurement cycle and tolerant apparatus needs: pendulum period against length, resistance against wire length, spring extension and oscillation, terminal velocity in a fluid, or a refraction and lens study. Each produces usable data in one session with repeats and each has a relationship that linearises cleanly, which the data-analysis criterion rewards. Designs needing a sustained water bath at fixed temperature are usually not completable without a return visit.

How are the 24 investigation marks distributed?+

Four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The measuring itself earns none directly. Research design is decided before the apparatus is touched; data analysis rewards processing, uncertainty treatment and presentation; conclusion rewards an answer justified by the data and placed in context; evaluation rewards naming the dominant uncertainty source and proposing one specific improvement rather than saying more repeats would help.

Why does my son lose marks on physics answers that are correct?+

Nearly always the command term. Explain requires causes and physical reasoning; describe requires features without causes; deduce requires a conclusion from information given; determine requires a numerical answer with working. Students answer almost everything as describe, because that is the most comfortable mode and the one school work rewards. The second cause is ignoring the mark allocation: a four-mark question wants four distinct creditable points, not one explained beautifully.

Does uncertainty really need to be taught separately?+

Almost always, and it is the highest-return hour in physics tutoring. Five rules cover nearly everything: absolute uncertainty from instrument resolution or repeat spread, add absolute uncertainties when adding or subtracting, add percentage uncertainties when multiplying or dividing, multiply percentage uncertainty by the power when raising to a power, and find gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines through the error bars. They are mechanical, examined directly, and rarely taught as a lesson.

What does a physics graph question actually want?+

Not plotting. It wants the student to rearrange the governing equation into straight-line form, decide from that rearrangement what goes on each axis, state what the gradient and intercept physically represent, and only then plot. A student who plots accurately and cannot interpret the gradient has done the easier half. Taught as a procedure rather than a skill, it takes about a fortnight of practice to become automatic.

Why should data-analysis work happen at the weekend?+

Because graph and data questions punish fatigue more than any other part of physics. A student who misreads an axis at seven in the evening after an hour on a bus has not learned anything about graphs - they have learned that graphs are confusing. The same student at ten on a Saturday morning reads it correctly and builds the habit the paper rewards. The weekend slot also competes with no school homework.

Which physics theme causes the most trouble?+

Fields, consistently. Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, potential, circuits and electromagnetic induction together produce more confusion than the rest of the course combined, partly because potential and field strength are routinely conflated and partly because induction questions require a direction argument to be derived rather than asserted. It also tends to arrive while the investigation is live, which is why support booked in the first term is worth more than the same hours in February.

Should the commute affect whether he takes physics at Higher Level?+

It should be part of the conversation, which it rarely is. Higher Level physics assumes homework time, and a student losing ten hours a week to travel has less of it. Higher Level physics with Higher Level Analysis and Approaches is a heavy quantitative pairing, and a third demanding written subject on top produces a very difficult second-year January. Check university requirements too, because dropping to Standard Level later is usually possible and moving up usually is not.

What may a tutor do with my daughter's investigation?+

Test whether the research question is feasible with the school's apparatus and timetable, explain what each of the four criteria rewards, teach uncertainty propagation and graph work on her own measurements, question the design, and read and comment on her drafts. A tutor may not choose the question, design the method, take or supply data, process it, produce graphs, or provide text. A malpractice finding falls on her, not on the tutor, and one operator in these results sells completed assessments.

When should physics support start for a student here?+

The first term of the first Diploma year, for uncertainty and graph skills, before they start costing marks in data questions. Then feasibility checking before investigation data collection, and timed data-analysis work from the first term of the second year rather than after the mocks. In most schools in this cluster the investigation deadline, the Extended Essay and the mocks all land within a few weeks in January and February.

Does Ramadan affect physics work and laboratory sessions?+

Both. The school day shortens so the bus returns earlier, which makes an afternoon session possible - but data-analysis work in the late afternoon during the month is usually poor value, so weekend mornings and post-Iftar slots work better. Laboratory sessions may also be rearranged, which matters if an investigation is still in progress. Ask the physics teacher early what happens to practical sessions during the month, and fix the tutoring pattern before it starts.

What does Higher Level physics tutoring cost from this district?+

Market figures read in October 2026 and attributed to the providers publishing them: qualified subject tutors online at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200; IB specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270; premium named tutors at AED 500 to 650, with BartyED at AED 650; in-home one-to-one with travel at AED 180 to 500. The band below AED 100 rarely contains anybody who teaches Higher Level physics.

Is a Higher Level physics specialist usually available at short notice?+

You hear it at the enquiry stage rather than in session three. Higher Level physics in the fortnight either side of mock examinations is the hardest combination on our list, because demand across the emirate concentrates on the same specialists in the same weeks. In that case we give a realistic wait, offer adjacent mathematics support with the boundary stated plainly, or decline. What we will not do is put a Standard Level tutor in front of a Higher Level candidate.

Start with the apparatus list and one marked paper

If your child is taking IB physics and you live in International City, two things shape everything. Ask the physics teacher how many timetabled laboratory sessions remain before the investigation deadline, and for the apparatus list - that decides what can be designed. Then send us one recent marked paper, which tells us whether the losses are command terms, uncertainty and graph work, or content. Those are three different plans and the paper settles it quickly. The trial lesson is free and comes with a written note; lessons are one-to-one and online on Gulf Standard Time.
