IGCSE Mock Exam Preparation in the UAE

IGCSE mock exam preparation in the UAE has to work inside a system no family designed. Your child's school writes the mock paper, marks it, and turns it into a forecast grade. KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the federal Ministry of Education holds the licence that lets the school operate. Cambridge and Pearson set the entry deadlines that closed months earlier. This page maps that system first, then sets out what one-to-one lessons over live video can still change between a mock result and the live paper.

  • Every UAE lesson runs one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time
  • Mock scripts read on screen, question by question, against the published mark scheme
  • AED figures here are market rates we attribute to their publisher, not our price list
  • A tutor teaches and gives feedback; assessed work stays the student's own

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

A mock is a school document, and the school answers to a regulator

IGCSE mock exam preparation in the UAE begins with an uncomfortable fact: the paper your child sat was almost certainly not set by Cambridge or Pearson. It was assembled by a head of department inside a private school that holds its licence from an emirate authority, sat under conditions that school chose, marked by the teacher who taught the course, and converted to a grade using a threshold that school picked. Every one of those decisions is legitimate. None of them is the exam board's.

That matters because families routinely treat a mock grade as a forecast of August, and then buy tutoring against the wrong number. A mock sat in a sports hall under centre conditions in late November, marked to last year's published thresholds, tells you something real. A mock written in class in the last period before a holiday, marked generously so the cohort does not panic, tells you something else. Before any money changes hands, you need to know which one your child sat.

The regulatory layer sits on top of all of it. In Dubai the Knowledge and Human Development Authority is, in the federal government's own words, responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain answer to the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools there. Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority; Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge; Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah come under the federal Ministry of Education. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities go further than inspection and approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods.

Not one of those bodies marks an IGCSE paper. They reach the school, the fees, the curriculum offer and the published inspection report. The grade thresholds, the paper variants, the entry deadlines and the certificate belong to Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, who sit entirely outside the emirate system. A parent who wants the mock explained has to know which of those two chains to pull, and in practice the mock sits in the school's chain while the consequence sits in the board's.

So this page is built the way the system is built. It starts with what a mock is and who owns each part of it, follows the one artefact that leaves the building, maps the regulator and what it does not reach, then deals with the UAE-specific collisions: the KHDA mandatory subjects that keep running through a mock fortnight, the Core and Extended tier decision a mock exists to inform, the MoHRE private tutor permit that governs whoever you pay, and Ministry of Education equivalency, which counts certificates and never mocks. Lessons with us run online, one-to-one, over live video.

At a glance

  • The mock paper, the marking and the threshold are the school's; the certificate is the board's
  • KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the RAK Department of Knowledge and the federal Ministry of Education split the UAE between them
  • Cambridge final entries for a June series close in the spring, often before the mock scripts come back marked
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are mandatory in Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum
  • Anyone paid to teach your child privately needs a MoHRE private tutor permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Ministry of Education equivalency counts five IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three programme stages sit around an IGCSE mock in a UAE school: the lower secondary years that feed it, the two IGCSE years the mock interrupts, and the sixth form the forecast grade is really aimed at. Mock preparation that ignores the stage either side of it tends to fix the wrong thing.

LSAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary and Checkpoint

The three years before the IGCSE course starts, ending for many UAE schools in Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests. Cambridge runs Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint in March, May and October, so a Year 9 cohort often has a recent external data point that predates any IGCSE mock. Reading it next to a Year 10 mock script usually tells you whether a weakness is new or four years old.

In UAE schools the Year 9 Checkpoint result is frequently the evidence used to place a child into Core or Extended at the start of Year 10. Families who come to us after a poor Year 10 mock are often disputing a placement decision made on a Checkpoint paper sat eighteen months earlier, in a school that has since changed its head of department.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The two-year course the mock belongs to. Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series; Pearson runs International GCSE in May/June and November. Mocks are not part of either. They are school instruments scheduled wherever the school has space, which in UAE practice means late November and early December in Year 11, with a second window in February or March for some subjects.

A UAE cohort is rarely entered with one board. It is normal for a Dubai or Abu Dhabi school to enter Mathematics with Pearson and Chemistry with Cambridge in the same year group, which means two different mark schemes, two different command vocabularies and two different sets of published key dates behind one mock results sheet. The sheet almost never says which is which.

AS/ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level, Pearson International A Level

The stage the forecast grade is pointed at. Sixth form entry inside the UAE and offers from overseas universities both work off predicted or forecast grades that trace back to a mock. Cambridge runs International A Level in June and November series. For a Year 11 family, the practical question is which subjects the mock has just made impossible to carry forward, and whether that is reversible before the live papers.

Ministry of Education equivalency for the British track asks for one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside five IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3. A mock grade contributes to none of that. It only influences which A Level subjects a UAE school will let a student start.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme, as the alternative route

The programme a UAE family is often choosing between when they pick a school. MYP has no IGCSE-style terminal papers and no mock in the same sense; its assessment runs on criteria A to D with internally set tasks and optional eAssessment at the end of Year 11. Parents moving a child from MYP into Year 10 IGCSE mid-course usually meet the mock as the first timed external-format paper the child has ever sat.

International Baccalaureate schools accounted for around 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment in 2024-25, against 37 per cent for UK curriculum schools, on the Dubai Media Office's published figures. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three IB, so the switch between the two systems mid-secondary is a live local scenario rather than a theoretical one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mock scripts fail differently by subject. A Mathematics mock loses marks in working that was never written down; a Biology mock loses them in command words read as invitations to write everything known. The syllabus codes below are the ones UAE schools enter most often, and the code on the script matters more than the subject name.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580, Pearson 4MA1)

Core and Extended; Foundation and Higher

The mock that most often triggers a tier argument. Extended papers reward method marks for working that is visible and abandoned attempts that are legible; a script that shows only answers throws those away silently. Non-calculator and calculator papers have different failure patterns, and a mock sat as one paper hides which of the two is weak.

Physics (Cambridge 0625, Pearson 4PH1)

Core and Extended; single award

Mock losses cluster in three places: unit and prefix errors in calculations, descriptions of practical method that omit the controlled variable, and electricity questions where the circuit is read wrongly in the first ten seconds. The alternative-to-practical component is the part most schools omit from a mock and most students have never timed.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620, Pearson 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Moles and reacting masses dominate the mark loss, followed by organic mechanisms learned as names rather than sequences. A Chemistry mock script is unusually diagnosable: the same arithmetic slip repeats across three questions, and fixing the method fixes all three. Qualitative analysis tables are frequently untaught at mock time.

Biology (Cambridge 0610, Pearson 4BI1)

Core and Extended

The content is learnable and the marks go on precision of language. Mock answers describe where a correct process is required, and name a structure where a function is asked for. Six-mark extended-response questions are where a strong-looking Biology student drops a grade, because the answer is unstructured rather than wrong.

English Language (Cambridge 0500 and 0990, Pearson 4EA1)

First Language; also 0510 as a Second Language

Directed-writing and summary tasks are mark-dense and time-sensitive, and a mock usually exposes pacing rather than ability. Second Language entry is common across UAE schools and is a different qualification with a different ceiling, so a mock grade means nothing until you know which code the candidate is on.

English Literature (Cambridge 0475 and 0992, Pearson 4ET1)

IGCSE; coursework or examined routes

Extract questions are answered without the extract in front of the student more often than teachers admit. Mock scripts show quotation hoarding and little analysis of method. Where a school runs the coursework route, part of the grade is already fixed before the mock, and a tutor's work on it is limited to feedback on the student's own drafting.

Economics (Cambridge 0455, Pearson 4EC1)

IGCSE

Diagram accuracy carries marks that prose cannot recover, and evaluation is where mock candidates stop writing. A typical mock script defines a term correctly, applies it loosely and never weighs the two sides. That is a structural fix rather than a content one, which is why Economics mocks often respond quickly.

Business Studies (Cambridge 0450, Pearson 4BS1)

IGCSE

Case-study papers punish generic answers. Mock marks are lost by writing about business in general when the question names a business in the stem. Calculation questions on ratios and break-even are reliably the highest marks-per-minute on the paper and reliably the ones left blank when timing collapses.

Computer Science (Cambridge 0478 and 0984)

IGCSE

Pseudocode written as half-remembered Python is the single commonest mock loss, followed by trace tables filled in without the loop condition being read. Theory questions on data representation are learnable in a fortnight; algorithm design is not, which changes the order in which a mock recovery plan should spend its hours.

Additional and Further Pure Mathematics (Cambridge 0606, Pearson 4PM1)

Extended only

Entered alongside 0580 or 4MA1 by UAE schools preparing students for A Level Mathematics. Mock performance here is a sharper predictor of A Level readiness than the main Mathematics mock, and a weak 0606 script against a strong 0580 script is the clearest signal that a sixth form conversation is needed.

Arabic as a First Language and Arabic Foreign Language (Cambridge 0508, 0544)

First Language and Foreign Language routes

Entered by many UAE schools alongside the mandatory Arabic lessons the emirate requires. The two codes are separate qualifications with separate ceilings and are frequently confused on a mock results sheet. Neither counts towards the five subjects the Ministry of Education uses for British-track equivalency.

Geography and History (Cambridge 0460, 0470)

IGCSE

Source-based questions dominate the mark loss. Mock scripts paraphrase the source rather than use it as evidence, and skip the comparison the question asked for. Case-study recall is the part students revise and the part that carries fewest marks, which makes mock scripts in these subjects unusually easy to re-prioritise.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mock season is short and the useful work is specific. These are the three shapes a mock exam preparation block takes, all delivered one-to-one over live video, with the script shared on screen so tutor and student are reading the same page at the same time.

Mock script review, a single diagnostic block

Two to three hours on one marked script, question by question, against the published mark scheme for that component. The output is a written list of where marks were lost by cause rather than by topic, and a decision about whether the problem is content, technique or timing. Families use this before committing to a term of hours.

  • Requires the marked script and the school's mark scheme or threshold sheet
  • Covers one paper of one subject; a second paper is a second block
  • Produces a cause-coded loss list, not a topic list
  • Often ends with a recommendation of fewer hours than the parent expected

Weekly one-to-one through the post-mock term

One hour per subject per week from the mock results sheet to the live papers, which in a UAE school year is usually eight to eighteen weeks depending on the series. The first three sessions follow the loss list from the script. Later sessions run timed sections rather than whole papers, because a whole paper eats an hour that teaching needs.

  • Same tutor every week, same subject, same tier
  • Session notes after each lesson so the school's own feedback can be compared
  • Timed sections under exam conditions from the midpoint onwards
  • Pauses available for study leave, Ramadan or travel

Mock fortnight intensive, before the papers are sat

A compressed block in the two to three weeks before an IGCSE mock fortnight, for a student who has never sat a timed external-format paper. The work is procedural: reading command words, allocating minutes by marks, writing method so it earns credit. It does not attempt to teach a syllabus, and we say so before it is booked.

  • Four to eight hours across two to three weeks
  • One paper format per session, under the real time limit
  • Suited to students arriving from MYP, CBSE or an American-curriculum school
  • Not a substitute for a term of teaching in a subject with real content gaps

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What a mock actually is, and who owns each part of the paper

An IGCSE mock is a school assessment designed to behave like a board assessment. Nothing about it is regulated by Cambridge or Pearson, and nothing about it appears on a certificate. The head of department chooses the paper, which may be a past series paper, a paper assembled from several series, or a paper written in-house. The school chooses the conditions, the invigilation, the duration and whether access arrangements that have been applied for are honoured. The teacher marks it, usually alongside twenty-five other scripts, in a week that also contains teaching.

The grade is where most of the confusion sits. To turn a raw mark into a grade, somebody has to apply a threshold. If the school uses the published grade thresholds from the series the paper came from, the grade is meaningful but historic: thresholds move between series with paper difficulty. If the school sets its own thresholds to spread the cohort sensibly, the grade describes a position in that class rather than a position against the board. Both practices are common in UAE schools and neither is wrong, but they produce different numbers from the same script.

This is why the first question in any useful IGCSE mock exam preparation conversation is not what grade came back. It is which paper, which board, which threshold and which conditions. A grade 5 on a Pearson 4MA1 Higher paper marked to last year's thresholds under full centre conditions is a different object from a grade 5 on an in-house paper marked to a curve. The first is a forecast with error bars. The second is a ranking.

The table below separates the parts of a mock by who controls them, because the parts a tutor can affect and the parts a parent should be asking the school about are not the same parts.

02

The forecast grade is the only part of a mock that leaves the building

Cambridge requires centres to submit forecast grades for candidates, and the deadline is a real published date rather than an internal courtesy. For a UAE candidate that deadline belongs to one of the two series Cambridge runs here, June or November, and it sits close to the exam window itself - the board wants the teacher's judgement before a single real script has been marked. Read the sequence in order and the structure of the year becomes obvious. The entry closes months ahead of the papers; the mock is sat somewhere between those two points; the forecast is due once the papers are already in sight. Pearson shows the same compression from the other end on dates it has published: the November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and for the equivalent November 2025 series the results did not reach students until 22 January 2026.

The practical consequence for a UAE family is that the mock exists partly to produce that forecast. A school needs defensible evidence for the number it submits, and a mock sat under something close to centre conditions is the cheapest defensible evidence available. That is also why schools resist changing a forecast on the strength of a good week in March: the forecast was built on the mock, and the mock is the only comparable data the department holds for the whole cohort.

Pearson's calendar runs on a different rhythm. International GCSE is available in May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, which is why every date on this page should be checked against the live official timetable on the board's own site before a plan is built on it.

What this means in practice: if the forecast grade matters to you, the conversation with the school happens in the fortnight after mock results and not in the spring. By the spring the number has been submitted. A Cambridge forecast grade sits in the file from late February, and a tutor hired in April is working on the live paper, not on the forecast.

Which authority stands behind the school that marked the script

Families bringing a mock complaint usually ask us which regulator to write to. The honest answer is that the regulator governs the school and not the paper, so the letter will be read but the mark will not move. Knowing exactly where the line falls saves a great deal of wasted effort in a term that is already short.

The federal government's own description of the system is precise. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi. KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge does the same there. The Ministry of Education plays its supervisory role for private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Those five bodies are the complete map.

Two of them reach further than inspection. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, which is the only place in the UAE framework where assessment practice is explicitly named as something a regulator approves. A Sharjah parent asking about mock marking practice therefore has a slightly stronger footing than a Dubai parent asking the same question, which is a distinction no competitor page appears to draw.

The federal baseline underneath all of it is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. That single sentence explains both the freedom a school has to design its own mock and the three subjects that keep running through mock fortnight regardless.

A published inspection band, and what it will not tell you about a mock

Every UAE parent with a Dubai or Abu Dhabi child has read an inspection report, and almost every one of them has over-read it. The published band describes a whole school against a framework: leadership, teaching quality, student outcomes, provision for students with additional needs. It is a six-point scale running from the top band down to the weakest. It is not a statement about IGCSE mock marking inside one department, or about how a head of department assembles a mock paper and settles on a threshold.

What the band does do is tell you how much benefit of the doubt to extend. A school in the upper bands is more likely to have departmental moderation, a second marker on borderline scripts and an internal policy on which series thresholds get applied. A school in the lower bands may have none of those, not through indifference but because the department is two teachers and one of them joined in September. Neither inference is a prediction about your child's grade.

The useful move is to convert the band into questions. Ask which series the mock paper came from. Ask whether the thresholds applied were the published ones for that series. Ask whether any scripts were second-marked, and whether the forecast grade will be built on this mock alone or on a trend. A head of department will answer all four in five minutes, and the answers change what a tutor should be hired to do far more than the band does.

Inspection reporting also moves. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's economic incentives package, and the sector is growing: Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools and 16,846 new places, with enrolment up 6 per cent the year before. A band published two years ago describes a school that has since hired a new cohort of staff.

Mock fortnight runs straight into Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies

Every revision plan a UAE family builds collides with a timetable fact that nobody outside the country has to think about. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. Those lessons do not vanish because Year 11 is sitting mocks.

The organisation rules are specific enough to plan around. KHDA requires separate classes by group for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies: schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students, and the school's licensed-curriculum language applies for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in Moral, Social and Cultural studies.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. That 40-minute unit is worth knowing for a different reason: it is the natural session length a UAE school day is built from, and a 60-minute tuition session that straddles two of them is the one families most often cancel.

One more constraint matters if you are considering separate Arabic tuition. For the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, and schools must ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects. Support for these subjects therefore works on the school's own material and nothing else.

Reading a mock results sheet without over-reading it

An IGCSE mock results sheet usually carries a grade, sometimes a percentage, and occasionally a raw mark out of the paper total. Those three numbers are not interchangeable, and the one most schools print is the least informative. A grade compresses a range of marks into a letter or a digit, so two students with a seven-mark gap can share a grade while two students with a one-mark gap sit either side of a boundary. If your child is one mark from a boundary, the grade on the sheet is actively misleading about how close the next grade is.

Raw marks are the number to ask for. With raw marks per question you can see whether the loss is concentrated in one topic, spread evenly as a timing problem, or sitting entirely in the last page as a pacing collapse. Those three patterns need three different plans, and no grade can distinguish between them. A school that will not release the raw marks will almost always release the script, and the script carries the marks.

The grading scale is the second trap. Cambridge IGCSE is reported on both an A* to G scale and a 9 to 1 scale depending on the syllabus, and Pearson International GCSE reports on 9 to 1. A sheet mixing subjects from two boards can therefore mix two scales in one row of numbers, and a grade 6 in one column is not comparable with a C in another without a conversion a parent should not have to do in their head.

The third trap is historic thresholds. If a school applied the published thresholds from an older series, the mock grade inherits that series' difficulty. Boards set thresholds after each series precisely because papers differ, so a mock grade generated from a two-year-old threshold on a harder paper understates performance, and the reverse overstates it. None of this makes the mock useless. It makes the mock a measurement with error bars, which is exactly how a revision plan should treat it.

07

The Core and Extended tier decision a mock exists to inform

In tiered IGCSE subjects the mock is doing one job above all others: testing whether the entry already made is the right one. Cambridge Core and Extended papers assess different content and carry different grade ceilings, and Pearson Foundation and Higher work the same way. The Core and Extended tier decision is the single most consequential thing a mock can still influence, and it is also the thing with the hardest deadline, because entries close months before the papers.

The arithmetic is unforgiving in both directions. A student on Extended who is scoring at the bottom of the range is competing for marks on content that may be out of reach, and the same hours spent on Core content might produce a secure grade at the Core ceiling instead of a weak one below it. A student on Core who is scoring at the top has hit a ceiling that no amount of tutoring can lift, and that ceiling can close a sixth form door. A mock is the last honest look at which of those two situations you are in.

The deadline is the problem. For a June series Cambridge final entries close in the spring, roughly four months before the first paper, which in most UAE schools lands within a few weeks of the mock fortnight - and the exact date is the one the exams officer holds, not one you can read off a calendar. If the mock results arrive after it, the entry has already been made. Some schools will amend an entry after the deadline; whether they can, and at what cost, is a question for the exams officer and not for a tutor. Asking it in the first week after results is the difference between an option and a regret.

Where the entry genuinely cannot move, the plan changes shape rather than disappearing. A student locked onto Extended works on securing the accessible marks across the whole paper rather than chasing the hardest questions, which is a different revision strategy with a different session structure. The table sets out what a mock script has to show before a tier conversation is worth having at all.

Where IGCSE mock marks are actually lost, read from the script

A mock script is a diagnostic document, and almost nobody uses it as one. The standard family response to a disappointing mock is to buy hours in the subject and start at the beginning of the syllabus, which spends the scarcest resource in the year on content the student already knows. A mock script review does the opposite: it reads the pattern of loss first and decides what to teach second.

The patterns repeat across subjects and across schools. Marks lost evenly across every question point at timing or at a shallow grasp of everything, which are distinguishable by whether the last page is blank. Marks lost in clusters point at specific topics. Marks lost on the highest-tariff questions while the short ones are secure points at structure, not knowledge. Marks lost where the working is absent point at method credit that was earned and never written down, which is the single cheapest fix available in a Mathematics or Physics paper.

Command words deserve separate attention because they are a learnable skill with a direct mark value. A question asking a student to describe is asking for observation without explanation; one asking to explain requires a causal chain; one asking to compare needs both sides in the same sentence; one asking to evaluate needs a judgement supported by the argument preceding it. IGCSE mock scripts are full of correct science and correct economics answered to the wrong instruction, and that loss is invisible in a grade.

The table below is the format of the loss list a script review produces. It is deliberately written as symptom to cause to action, because the action is what buys the grade back, and because a topic list dressed up as a diagnosis is what most mock feedback actually is.

What mock-season support costs in the UAE market

Published AED rates are hard to find in this market, which is itself informative. Of the UAE tutoring pages we examined in October 2026, three published no price at all and two quoted in US dollars, a currency no UAE family transacts in. The figures below come from providers' own published pages and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, read in October 2026. They are market rates attributed to whoever published them, not an IB Gram price list.

Mock season distorts those rates in a predictable way. Demand concentrates in the three weeks after results, when every Year 11 parent in a cohort reaches the same conclusion in the same week, and the tutors with current board experience in a specific subject are booked first. Families who wait until January in a February-series school, or until March in a June-series school, are shopping in a thinner market at the top of the range. The cheapest hour in this market is the one booked in the week the results sheet arrives.

Cost in context is worth stating plainly. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's economic incentives package. Against a school fee that is already paid and already frozen, a block of mock-script hours is a small marginal spend, and that is the right comparison to make rather than comparing one tutor's hourly rate against another's.

Our own position: we publish no rate card on this page because the rate depends on subject, tier and how many weeks remain, and a number without those three attached would be useless to you. The first lesson is a trial, with no obligation to book a block afterwards, and the quote that follows is for the specific plan the script review produces.

A visiting tutor in mock season against a script shared on screen

This is the decision most UAE families are actually making, so it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. In-home tutoring is a real and widely used service in this country: the market charges roughly AED 180-500 an hour for it, travel is priced into the rate, and for a younger child who needs a person in the room it can be the right call. IB Gram does not sell it here. Home visits are a service we offer only in India, and every UAE lesson runs one-to-one over live video.

The case for online in mock season is specific rather than general. The work after a mock is marked-script work: tutor and student reading the same page at the same time, the mark scheme beside it, the student rewriting an answer while the tutor watches the pen. That is a shared-screen task. Nothing about it improves by having someone sit at the same table, and two things about it get worse, because a visiting tutor cannot annotate a shared document and the family pays for travel time that marks nothing.

The bigger argument is the size of the pool. A visiting tutor has to live within a sensible drive of your address, which in practice means a Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain family is choosing from whoever is nearby, and a Dubai family is choosing from whoever can reach Jumeirah at 5pm on a weekday. Online removes the drive from the equation, so the match is made on the thing that matters in mock season: current experience of the exact component your child's script came from. A Pearson 4CH1 Paper 2 script needs someone who knows that paper, not someone who knows Chemistry and lives nearby.

Scheduling is the quiet third factor. Mock season in a UAE school sits in the busiest weeks of the year, study leave arrives without much notice, and Ramadan moves the whole household's evening. A session that exists as a video link can shift to post-Iftar timing or to a morning during study leave without anyone renegotiating a drive across the emirate.

Who is permitted to be paid for marking your child's mock

Private tutoring in the UAE is a permitted activity with a permit attached, and the rule is clearer than most families expect. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page for it is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone.

The eligible categories are broad and worth knowing, because they include people families do not think of as tutors. Teachers registered in government or private schools qualify. So do employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. That last category explains a common UAE arrangement in which an older sibling's classmate is paid to run revision sessions, and it is lawful provided the permit exists.

One boundary is firmer than the rest and it bites precisely in mock season. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff are reported to prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct is reported to bar serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. This is press-reported rather than read from the policy document itself, so verify it against the current ADEK position before relying on it. The direction of travel is unambiguous: the teacher who marked the mock is the wrong person to pay to explain it.

A separate regime covers anyone running a centre rather than teaching individually. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. IB Gram holds no such permit and no UAE premises, and nobody should describe us as carrying regulator approval of any kind. What we do is match a student to an independent tutor for lessons over live video.

Academic honesty between the mock and the live paper

There is an essay-mill layer in this market, and mock season is when it sells hardest. One page we examined offers finished Internal Assessments for a four-figure AED sum. Families under mock-results pressure are exactly the audience that buys. So the boundary needs stating rather than implying: a tutor teaches, explains, models, questions, and gives feedback on what the student has produced. Assessed work must be the student's own, and anyone offering otherwise is selling a malpractice case, not a service.

On IGCSE coursework components, which exist in subjects including English Literature on some routes, the line is practical. A tutor may discuss a text, explain what a mark descriptor is asking for, read a draft the student wrote and say where it does not yet meet the descriptor, and teach the skill that is missing. A tutor may not supply sentences, restructure a submission on the student's behalf, or hand back a version the student did not produce. If a reader could not tell whose work it is, it has gone too far.

Materials are the second boundary and the one most often crossed casually. Nobody should sell you a past paper, a mark scheme, a syllabus document or a grade threshold table, because those belong to Cambridge and Pearson and are published on their own sites. A tutor references them and links to them. If a provider offers a downloadable pack of board material as a selling point, you are being sold something that was never theirs to sell, and the same provider is unlikely to be careful about anything else.

The mock itself carries a smaller honesty question that comes up every year. A school mock paper is often a past series paper, and a student who has seen that exact paper beforehand produces a meaningless grade and loses the one real measurement available before the live series. If a tutor has worked through a paper that then appears as the mock, say so to the school. The measurement is worth more than the mark.

13

After the mock: what the Ministry of Education actually counts

Mock grades count for nothing in the UAE equivalency process, and it is worth knowing exactly what does count, because the family planning conversation usually happens in the same week as the mock results. For the British track, the published position is that a student must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

Two details inside that rule change decisions. First, Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which means a candidate carrying both as mandatory school subjects needs five others on top. One UAE provider page currently states that candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced rule is five, and getting this wrong changes a subject-selection decision for a whole family. Second, the count is of certificated subjects, so a subject dropped after a mock is a subject that will not appear in the count.

For the American track the published requirements are different in kind: English proficiency through a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics through at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. No International Baccalaureate points threshold appears in that published clarification, so any specific IB figure you are shown should be checked on the Ministry of Education's own site before you plan around it.

Ministry of Education equivalency is the family's own process, handled with the Ministry or the relevant emirate authority. No tutoring provider performs it, guarantees it, or is required for it, and nobody should tell you that hiring a tutor is a step in an equivalency application. What a tutor can do is make sure the five subjects that have to carry a grade are the five getting the hours after a disappointing mock.

Where we tutor

Mock season across the seven emirates and Al Ain

A mock timetable is set locally, which means it changes across the country. The regulator differs, the school calendar differs, and the distance to the nearest centre for a private candidate differs. These are the practical differences that show up in a mock results conversation.

Dubai

227 private schools and 387,441 students in 2024-25, offering 17 curricula, with UK curriculum schools the largest group. Mock fortnights are tightly scheduled because hall space is contested, and KHDA mandatory subject lessons continue through them.

Abu Dhabi

Schools answer to ADEK, which supervises licensing and accreditation in the emirate. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff are reported to bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, which directly affects who may be paid to mark a mock.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK rather than a separate authority, which surprises families who assume each city has its own regulator. Smaller cohorts mean mock papers are more often written in-house by a single teacher rather than assembled from a past series bank.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education here and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That last phrase means the authority's reach extends further into school assessment practice than KHDA's reads on paper.

Ajman

Under the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate-level authority. Many Ajman families have a child in a Sharjah or Dubai school, so the mock calendar that governs the household is often set in a different emirate from the one they live in.

Ras Al Khaimah

Regulated by the emirate's Department of Knowledge, which also approves fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods. Returned zero mentions across the competitor pages we examined, which is a reasonable measure of how little published guidance RAK families get.

Fujairah

Under the federal Ministry of Education. The British-curriculum school pool is small, so a Year 11 cohort sitting an IGCSE mock may be a single class, and the mock paper and the marking are the work of one teacher with no second marker available.

Umm Al Quwain

Also supervised by the federal Ministry of Education. For a subject the local school does not offer, families use private candidate entry at a centre in another emirate, which makes the mock the only timed rehearsal available before a long journey on the morning of the real paper.

Dubai British-curriculum cluster

Students we support sit IGCSE mocks at schools across this group, which run both Cambridge and Pearson entries, sometimes within one year group. Mock windows here cluster in the fortnight before the winter break, which is why December script reviews are our busiest block of the year.

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain cluster

Schools here are licensed by ADEK, and the professional-ethics position on staff tutoring their own students is stricter in practice than in Dubai. Families in this cluster ask more often than any other whether the person marking a mock privately is permitted to do it.

Sharjah and the northern emirates

A thinner British-curriculum pool, spread across three regulators. Mock papers are more often written in-house, and the gap between a mock threshold and a published board threshold is widest here because there is no neighbouring cohort to calibrate against.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked script, not just the grade

Share the marked mock script, the board and component number from the front page, and the mark scheme or threshold sheet if the school released one. If the school released only a grade, the script alone is enough. A grade on its own tells us too little to match a tutor against, and we will ask for the script before quoting anything.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, used as a diagnosis

The first lesson is free, with no card required and no obligation to book a block afterwards. In mock season it is spent on the script rather than on getting acquainted: the tutor reads the loss pattern, tests two or three hypotheses with the student live, and finishes with a view on whether the problem is content, technique or timing.

  3. 03

A written plan with the weeks counted backwards

You receive a plan that starts from the date of the first live paper and counts back, naming what each block of sessions is for. Where the plan says fewer hours than you expected, that is the recommendation and not an opening position. Where it says the mock cannot be fixed in the time available, it says that too.

  4. 04

Weekly one-to-one lessons over live video

Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the same tutor each week for a subject. Session notes follow each lesson so you can compare them with the school's own feedback. Timed sections under exam conditions begin from the midpoint of the plan rather than at the end.

  5. 05

A review point before the live series

Four to six weeks before the first paper, the plan is reviewed against a fresh timed section rather than against a feeling. If the loss pattern has shifted, the remaining sessions are re-pointed. If a subject has stabilised, we say so and release the hours rather than continuing to bill them.

  6. 06

If no specialist is free, you hear that first

Mock season concentrates demand, and some components have a thin specialist pool. If nobody with current experience of your child's exact paper is available in the window you need, we tell you before you book and say when one is likely to be. An approximate match in a six-week window is worse than an honest no.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The script is read before anything is sold

Every plan starts from the marked mock script and the loss pattern inside it, not from a package size. That is why a recommendation sometimes comes back as four hours on one component rather than a term of weekly sessions across three subjects. It is also why we ask for the script before quoting.

Matched to the component, not the subject

A Pearson 4PH1 Paper 2 script and a Cambridge 0625 alternative-to-practical script need different tutors, and we match on the component number from the front page of the paper. The board, the tier and the component carry more information about what is needed than the subject name does.

Figures on this page carry their source and date

Every AED band here is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, with October 2026 as the read date. Every regulatory statement names the authority it came from. Where a fact could not be verified, including International Baccalaureate session dates, the page says so instead of filling the gap.

The honesty boundary is stated, not implied

A tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback on the student's own work. We do not supply assessed work, and we do not distribute board material that belongs to Cambridge or Pearson. In a market where finished coursework is openly sold, saying this plainly is the useful differentiator.

One delivery model, described accurately

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not operate a UAE office or centre, we hold no regulator permit, and we do not imply either. Home visits are a service we offer only in India, and this page would be the wrong place to pretend otherwise.

A plan that counts backwards from a published date

Board calendars drive the plan: Cambridge's published key dates for the series your child sits, or Pearson's published timetable for theirs. Where a date is provisional, the plan says provisional and links the live official timetable rather than restating a date that can be revised.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Does a mock grade appear anywhere on the certificate Cambridge or Pearson issues?+

No. A mock is a school assessment and leaves no trace on the certificate. The paper was chosen by the school, marked in the school and graded against a threshold the school selected. The certificate carries only the result of the live series, set and marked by the board. The one thing a mock produces that leaves the building is the forecast grade the school submits, and that is an internal prediction rather than a result. Treat the mock as a measurement with error bars that tells you what to work on, not as a number anyone outside the school will ever see.

Who else sees my daughter's IGCSE mock script besides her subject teacher?+

In most UAE schools: the subject teacher who marked it, the head of department who set it, and the tutor group lead who writes the report. A borderline script may be second-marked in a department that has the staff for it. The script is not sent to Cambridge or Pearson, and no regulator reads it. You are entitled to ask for the script itself rather than just the grade, and in our experience schools release it readily. Ask for the raw marks per question at the same time, because the pattern of loss carries far more information than the grade does.

The school returned raw marks and no grade for the mock. What do we do with that?+

That is the better outcome, not the worse one. Raw marks per question let you see whether the loss is concentrated in one topic, spread evenly as a timing problem, or sitting entirely on the last page as a pacing collapse. Those three patterns need three different plans. A grade compresses all of that into a single letter and hides which of the three you are looking at. Ask the department which series the paper came from, then compare the raw total against that series' published thresholds for a rough band. The plan should be built from the marks, not the band.

Our son's mock paper was written by his own teacher instead of taken from a past series. Does that matter?+

It changes what the grade means. An in-house paper has not been through the board's own calibration, so its difficulty is unknown and the threshold applied to it is a judgement rather than a published figure. The paper may still be a good test of the syllabus and the teaching, and in small cohorts in the northern emirates it is often the only practical option. What it cannot support is a confident prediction. Ask whether the thresholds came from a real series, and ask for one timed past series paper as a second data point before committing to a term of hours.

When does the forecast grade a mock feeds actually leave the school?+

Earlier than most families expect. Cambridge publishes a forecast grade deadline for every series it runs, and for a UAE candidate that means the June series or the November series. The deadline sits close to the exam window itself, so the grade is submitted on evidence gathered before any real script has been marked - in practice, the mock. Pearson runs its International GCSE on its own published timetable, with the November 2026 papers from late October to 19 November 2026 and results to students in January. The useful consequence is the same on both boards: a conversation about a forecast grade belongs in the fortnight after mock results, not in the term the exams are actually sat. By then the number has gone, and a tutor hired afterwards is working on the live paper instead.

Can a mock result move my child between Core and Extended?+

Sometimes, and the deadline decides. Entries close months before the papers: for a June series Cambridge's final entry date falls in the spring, close enough to the mock fortnight in many UAE schools that mock results and the entry deadline arrive within a few weeks of each other. If the results land afterwards, the entry has already been made, and whether it can be amended is a question for the exams officer. Ask in the first week after results. Where the tier genuinely cannot move, the plan changes shape rather than disappearing: a student locked onto Extended works on securing every accessible mark across the whole paper rather than chasing the hardest questions.

Dubai schools answer to KHDA. Can we ask the regulator to review how a mock was marked?+

KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, which reaches the school, its licence, its inspection report and the mandatory subject requirements. It does not reach a mock paper, a mock mark or a threshold a head of department applied, because none of those are board assessments. A complaint will be read as a quality concern about the school, not as an appeal against a mark. The faster route is the head of department, then school leadership. There is no external appeal against a mock, only a conversation, and the questions worth asking are about the paper's provenance and the thresholds used.

Which authority regulates our school if we move to Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain mid-year?+

Both come under the federal Ministry of Education, which supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. That is different from Dubai, where KHDA oversees private education, and from Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, where ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation. Sharjah has its own Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and both of those also approve curricula and assessment methods. For a mid-year move, the examination entry sits with the school and its centre, not the regulator, so the first call is to the exams officer at both schools about transferring or re-entering.

Do the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education periods pause during a mock fortnight?+

Not as a rule. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires that the weekly instructional time be met, calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. Schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is delivered, with at least 25 minutes advised for any mandatory subject lesson. A mock fortnight may reshuffle the timetable, but the weekly entitlement remains. Build a revision plan around those periods rather than assuming they will be released, and remember that neither Arabic nor Islamic education counts towards Ministry of Education equivalency's five subjects.

What do UAE providers charge for marked-script work in mock season?+

Published figures, read in October 2026, run from the budget end upwards: EdFlik from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52 for general online help, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE, TutorChase at AED 270, Bestimate's 2026 table at AED 200-450 and above for specialists, and BartyED at AED 650 at the premium end. Visiting tutors are quoted at AED 180-500 with travel priced in. Script-level diagnosis sits in the specialist band rather than the budget one. Those are market rates attributed to their publishers, not our price list. Ask any provider whether marking is inside the hour or billed on top.

Does a tutor who marks mock scripts for payment need a permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted amount as unverified. Ask to see the permit before the first paid hour.

A teacher at my son's own school in Abu Dhabi offered to mark his mocks privately. Is that permitted?+

Treat it as a problem. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff are reported to prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct is reported to bar serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. That reporting should be checked against the current ADEK policy document before anyone relies on the exact wording, but the direction is clear. There is also a plain conflict of interest: the person who set the paper, marked it and will submit the forecast grade is the wrong person to pay for a second opinion on it.

Can a tutor hand us the official mark scheme for the paper our daughter sat as a mock?+

No, and nobody should offer to. Mark schemes, past papers, syllabus documents and grade threshold tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson, who publish them on their own sites. A tutor references them and links to them. Reproducing or distributing them is copyright infringement, and for unreleased material it is a malpractice exposure for the student. If a provider advertises a downloadable pack of board material, that material was never theirs to sell. What a tutor can legitimately do is work through a paper your child has in front of them and explain how the scheme awards each mark.

Our daughter dropped two grades between the mock and a practice paper a fortnight later. Which score is real?+

Probably neither, on its own. Two scores a fortnight apart differ because the papers differed, the thresholds differed, the conditions differed, or the student's timing collapsed on one of them. A two-grade swing in fourteen days is almost never a two-grade change in understanding. Compare the raw marks question by question rather than the grades: if the loss moved to a different topic, it is content; if it moved to the last page, it is pacing. A third timed section under proper conditions will usually settle it, and that is cheaper than a term of hours spent on the wrong diagnosis.

Do strong mock grades help with a Ministry of Education equivalency file?+

They have no role in it. For the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. The count is of certificated subjects, so mocks and school reports do not appear. One UAE provider page states six subjects are needed; the sourced figure is five. Equivalency is handled with the Ministry or the emirate authority, by the family, and no tutoring provider performs or guarantees it.

No specialist is free for our subject during mock season. What happens then?+

You hear that before you book. Demand concentrates in the three weeks after mock results because every family in a cohort reaches the same conclusion in the same week, and some components have a thin specialist pool at any time of year. If nobody with current experience of your child's exact board and component is available in the window you need, we say so and say when one is likely to be. We will also tell you honestly whether a generalist hour is worth taking for that subject. In a six-week run-in, an approximate match usually costs more than it returns.

How many weeks before the mock fortnight should one-to-one hours start?+

For a student who has sat timed papers before, two to three weeks of procedural work is usually enough: command words, minutes allocated by marks, writing method so it earns credit. For a student arriving from the Middle Years Programme, a CBSE school or an American-curriculum school who has never sat an external-format paper under time, start earlier and treat the mock as the target rather than the obstacle. What a short block before a mock cannot do is teach a syllabus. If there are real content gaps, the honest plan runs after the mock, using the script as the diagnosis.

Start with the script, then decide what the hours are for

An IGCSE mock is the best measurement a UAE family gets before the live series, and it is routinely wasted because the grade gets read and the script gets filed. Send us the marked script, the board and the component number from the front page, and the first lesson is free with no obligation to book afterwards. You will get a view on whether the problem is content, technique or timing, and a plan counted backwards from the published date of the first paper. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, as online IGCSE tuition in the UAE with no travel inside the hour you pay for. If the plan needs fewer hours than you expected, that is what it will say.
