IB Maths Tutor in International City

The real question behind a search for an IB maths tutor in International City is whether anyone reachable actually knows the syllabus your child is sitting. It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. This page gives you the verification questions to ask, what a genuine answer sounds like, and which credential claims in this market do not survive checking. Lessons are one-to-one over live video.

  • Verification questions published so you can test any tutor, including ours
  • Matched to one of four course and level combinations before booking
  • Exploration coached against the criteria, never written

IB & IGCSE in International City

Does anyone reachable actually know this syllabus?

This is the honest version of the question families in these clusters are asking, and the honest answer has two parts. First: within a short drive of International City, probably not. There is no IB World School inside the district, the nearest Diploma teaching is in Silicon Oasis with Al Warqa and Mirdif beyond, and the people who teach Diploma mathematics in Dubai mostly live near the schools that employ them. A proximity search here returns availability rather than specification knowledge.

Second: across the emirate and online, yes, but you should verify it rather than take it on trust. 'IB maths' describes four different qualifications. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-led, with induction, complex numbers and vectors at Higher Level. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics, with matrices and graph theory at Higher Level. Each runs at two levels, examined separately, and a tutor strong in one can be genuinely out of their depth in another.

Nobody can tell which is which from a profile, which is why this page is built around verification instead of claims. There are four or five questions that distinguish somebody who teaches your child's exact course from somebody who did a mathematics degree and is willing. They take two minutes, any competent tutor answers them without hesitation, and they work just as well on us as on anybody else.

The questions matter more than usual in this market because some of the credential language used here does not survive checking. Tutors described as approved by KHDA, when that permit is issued to training institutes with premises. Examiner status asserted without evidence. Star ratings published with no countable reviews behind them. One competitor publishes two different ratings on the same page. These are not small things when you are handing somebody a two-year qualification.

IB Gram delivers mathematics tuition online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE - home visits are an India-only service - and for this subject in this district that is the arrangement that makes a specialist reachable at all. We also publish what we are not, further down, because a page that only lists strengths is not telling you enough to decide.

There is a second reason to insist on verification rather than reputation. Mathematics is the subject where a mismatch hides longest, because early Higher Level teaching overlaps with Standard Level content and the gap only appears when the genuinely harder material arrives. By then a term has gone and the household has paid for it. Two minutes of questions at the start is the cheapest insurance available in this market. What follows is practical. The verification questions and what good answers sound like. The four combinations and what each one demands. Which claims to distrust and how to check them. What a diagnostic session should tell you within an hour. And an honest statement of which mathematics combinations we cannot always staff.

At a glance

  • Four combinations: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at Higher or Standard Level
  • A tutor strong in calculus and proof may be weak in statistical inference and graph theory
  • No IB World School inside International City; nearest Diploma teaching is in Silicon Oasis
  • Verification takes four or five questions and two minutes
  • A permit from KHDA covers training institutes with premises, not individual tutors
  • Lessons are one-to-one and online; no tutor travels to a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four points at which mathematics help is asked for from these clusters, each needing a different kind of tutor.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP mathematics

Graded 1 to 8 against four criteria: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the usual weak point, because generalising a rule in correct notation and then justifying it is rarely taught directly. A competent generalist can teach this well.

This is the stage where verification matters least, because the work is skill-building rather than specification-specific. It is also where the local tutor pool is deepest. If your child is in the Middle Years Programme, the criterion breakdown from the school matters far more than the tutor's Diploma credentials.

AASLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Analysis and Approaches, Standard Level

Algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus and statistics across two papers plus the exploration. Demanding for a student who was comfortable rather than strong in Middle Years mathematics, mainly because it assumes prior fluency and moves quickly. Verification matters here: a general mathematics tutor will cope with the content and miss the examination technique.

The most commonly requested combination from this district, and the presenting problem is almost always the same: the content makes sense in lessons and collapses in tests. That is method and timing rather than comprehension, and one marked paper identifies it. Ask any prospective tutor what they would look for in that paper before they answer.

AAHLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Analysis and Approaches, Higher Level

Everything at Standard Level plus proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors and considerably heavier calculus. Three papers rather than two. The usual requirement for engineering, mathematics and physics degrees, and the combination where a mismatched tutor is most quickly exposed.

This is the hardest mathematics combination to find within reach of these clusters and the one where online matching makes the most difference. It is also the one we most often cannot staff at short notice, particularly in the weeks around mock examinations. We say so at the enquiry stage rather than offering a Standard Level tutor instead.

AIAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Applications and Interpretation, SL and HL

Modelling, statistics, probability and technology use, with matrices, graph theory and deeper statistical inference at Higher Level. Not an easier course, a different one: less algebraic manipulation, far more interpretation. The characteristic failure is a correct calculation with nothing said about what it means.

Verification is particularly worth doing for Applications and Interpretation, because many mathematics graduates have never taught graph theory or transition matrices and will say yes to the subject name without knowing the content. Ask specifically which Higher Level topics they have taught, and listen for whether the answer contains the words the syllabus uses.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The topics to name when you are testing whether a tutor knows the course, with what each actually demands.

Algebraic fluency and manipulation

AA SL and HL

Indices, surds, algebraic fractions, rearranging and factorising without hesitation. The foundation everything else stands on. A student who does these slowly cannot complete the rest of a paper in the time available, whatever they understand.

Functions and transformations

AA and AI, both levels

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, and the effect of each transformation on a graph. Examination questions combine two or three transformations at once, which defeats students who memorised rules rather than understanding them.

Differential calculus

AA SL and HL

Chain, product and quotient rules, optimisation and kinematics, with implicit differentiation and related rates at Higher Level. Marks go on optimisation answers where the stationary point is found and never classified as a maximum.

Integral calculus

AA SL and HL

Definite and indefinite integration, areas and volumes of revolution, with substitution, integration by parts and partial fractions at Higher Level. Lost marks cluster on limits, the omitted constant, and the wrong variable of integration.

Proof, including induction

AA HL

Direct proof, contradiction, counterexample and proof by mathematical induction. Heavily examined and heavily botched: the inductive step asserted rather than derived and the conclusion omitted. Formulaic enough to teach reliably in a few sessions.

Complex numbers and vectors

AA HL

Cartesian, polar and exponential forms, De Moivre's theorem, and vector geometry including lines and planes. Marks go on argument conventions and on diagrams students do not draw. A useful topic to name when testing a tutor's depth.

Statistics, probability and distributions

AA and AI, both levels

Discrete and continuous distributions, the binomial and normal, correlation and regression. The heart of Applications and Interpretation. Lost marks concentrate on conditional probability and on conclusions stated without the question's context.

Modelling and interpretation

AI SL and HL

Choosing a model, fitting it and saying what it means. The computation is rarely the problem. A student who writes a regression gradient without a sentence on what it represents has forfeited the marks separating the top bands.

Matrices, eigenvalues and transition matrices

AI HL

Matrix operations, eigenvalues, and transition matrices applied to long-run behaviour. Unfamiliar to many mathematics graduates who have never taught the course, which makes it one of the sharpest verification topics available to a parent.

Graph theory

AI HL

Minimum spanning trees, shortest path, Chinese postman and travelling salesman problems. Highly teachable because the question types repeat, and almost never encountered by somebody who has not taught Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level.

The mathematical exploration

AA and AI, both levels

An individual exploration of 12 to 20 pages worth 20 marks against five criteria. Coaching covers topic viability, structure, mathematical communication and reflection. The student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes every word.

Graphic display calculator technique

AA and AI, both levels

Which paper permits the calculator and what it is legitimately for. Central in Applications and Interpretation; a tool in Analysis and Approaches that must not replace analytic method. Solving numerically, finding intersections, distributions, storing values to avoid rounding error.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways mathematics support is bought from this district, plus an honest note on in-home tuition.

Weekly one-to-one, following the school's scheme

One 60-minute session a week sitting a step behind the class, so the hour consolidates rather than duplicating. The tutor works from the student's own marked exercises, which is where a method habit is caught before it hardens. Two sessions a week is common in the second Diploma year for Higher Level students.

  • Confirmed against the course and level before the first session
  • Driven by the student's marked class work each week
  • Method marks taught explicitly rather than assumed
  • Slot timed to the bus, usually from 6pm on weekdays

Exploration coaching block

Four to six sessions timed to the school's internal deadline, beginning with whether the chosen topic contains enough mathematics at the right level to score on the use-of-mathematics criterion. The tutor questions the structure and comments on drafts; the student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes the exploration.

  • Topic viability tested before any writing begins
  • The five criteria explained with their mark allocations
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts, never supplied mathematics
  • Session count agreed in advance so the total is known

Paper technique before the May session

Timed papers with mark-scheme walkthroughs, concentrated on the two or three question types costing the most marks. In mathematics this reliably recovers marks because so much of the loss is method rather than understanding. The weekend morning is where it belongs, because a full paper cannot be sat after a long commute.

  • Diagnostic week on timed papers at the correct level
  • Working-shown discipline and rounding control drilled deliberately
  • Calculator-paper and analytic-paper technique separated
  • Honest statement of what the remaining weeks can achieve

In-home mathematics tutoring, honestly

Dubai has mathematics tutors who travel, at published in-home rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel per Bestimate's 2026 table and advertised home-tutor rates. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. For Higher Level Analysis and Approaches the travelling pool reachable from Al Warsan is effectively empty.

  • No IB Gram tutor travels to an address in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE
  • The in-home premium is roughly AED 50-150 an hour of travel
  • Presence in the room does not verify specification knowledge
  • The verification questions on this page apply to a travelling tutor too

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in International City

01

Five questions that establish whether a tutor knows the course

These take two minutes and they are the most useful thing on this page. Ask them of any prospective tutor, including us. What you are listening for is not confidence but specificity: whether the answer uses the vocabulary the syllabus uses, and whether it distinguishes the four combinations rather than treating 'IB maths' as one subject.

Start with the simplest discriminator. Ask which of the four combinations they have taught and how many cohorts of each. A tutor who teaches Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level will say so and will usually volunteer which topics they find students struggle with. A tutor who answers 'all of them' without elaboration, or who does not distinguish the two courses, has told you something.

Then ask something only a course teacher would know. For Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, what they look for in a proof-by-induction answer, and where students lose the marks. For Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, how they teach transition matrices or the Chinese postman problem. Those are not trick questions; they are ordinary parts of the course that somebody who has not taught it will not have encountered.

The last two questions are about the exploration and the mark scheme. Ask which criterion carries the most marks in the exploration, and ask what they would look for in one marked past paper before planning anything. The first has a factual answer. The second separates a tutor who diagnoses from one who delivers a prepared course, and that distinction decides whether the first six sessions are targeted or generic.

Credential claims in this market that do not survive checking

Some of the language used to sell tutoring in Dubai means something specific, and some of it means nothing at all. Knowing which is which is worth more than any amount of browsing, and it applies to every provider in these results including this one.

The most common is approval by KHDA. KHDA regulates private schools in Dubai and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes that have premises and staff in the emirate. It does not approve or license individual private tutors - that is MoHRE's permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. A provider describing its tutors as approved by the authority is either misunderstanding the system or referring to a permit it should be able to show you.

The second is examiner status. An individual's current examiner status is not something a parent can verify independently, and it should not be used to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, which it does not confer. If examiner experience is being offered as a reason to pay more, ask what specifically it changes about the teaching, and treat a vague answer as the answer.

The third is ratings. One competitor publishes two different aggregate ratings on the same page; another shows a five-star average from twenty reviews beside a claim of a claim of several thousand students. Self-asserted review markup that does not match a visible, countable set of dated reviews is against Google's structured-data policy and, as a commercial representation in the UAE, a consumer-protection exposure. We publish no rating we cannot evidence that way.

03

The four combinations, and what each one actually needs

Before verifying anybody, establish what you are verifying them against. Get the course name and level from the Diploma coordinator in writing: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard. Families in these clusters compare notes across schools constantly, and because school provision varies, two students in the same building can be taking different mathematics with nothing in common.

Analysis and Approaches needs a tutor comfortable with algebraic manipulation, calculus technique and proof, who teaches method presentation as a subject in its own right. The characteristic student problem is understanding the mathematics and losing method marks, so the tutor's value is in habits: working shown, rounding controlled, stationary points classified, vectors sketched.

Applications and Interpretation needs a tutor comfortable with statistics, modelling and the interpretive writing the mark scheme rewards, and at Higher Level with matrices and graph theory. The characteristic student problem is computing correctly and saying nothing about meaning, so the tutor's value is in teaching a sentence structure that connects a number to the context.

At Higher Level in either course the additional content is substantial rather than decorative, and a Standard Level tutor will not cover it adequately. That is the mismatch most likely to go undetected for a term, because early Higher Level teaching overlaps with Standard Level content and the gap appears later. It is also why the proof-by-induction and transition-matrix questions above are worth asking before the first session rather than after the third.

04

What one diagnostic session should tell you

A first session that teaches is a wasted first session. The hour should establish which of three things is wrong, because they lead to completely different plans and the wrong plan costs a term. The three are a content gap, a method habit, and a timing problem - and most students have one dominant cause rather than all three.

The method is simple and any competent tutor will do it: have the student work through questions at the correct level while the tutor watches, then mark a timed paper properly against the published mark scheme, writing down the reason for each lost mark. Marks lost with correct final answers point to method. Marks lost on one topic point to content. Marks lost in the final third of the paper point to pacing.

What you should receive afterwards is a written note, not a verbal reassurance. The three or four recurring reasons, what the first six sessions will target, and an honest statement of what that is likely to achieve. We publish no predicted grades and offer no guarantees, because nobody can honour either, and a realistic range with reasoning is a more useful document than a promise.

If the diagnosis says the problem is not teaching - that the student is not doing the work the school already sets, or that the difficulty is organisational - the right answer is to say so and not take the booking. That happens often enough to be worth stating, and for a household in these clusters already spending ten hours a week on a commute, being told the truth early is worth more than a package.

05

Testing an exploration topic before the student commits

The mathematical exploration is worth 20 marks against five criteria, and the criterion carrying the most - use of mathematics, with six - depends almost entirely on a decision made before any writing: whether the chosen topic contains mathematics commensurate with the course. A topic that reduces to arithmetic and a graph cannot score well there however neatly it is presented.

So the highest-leverage half hour in the whole exploration is a viability conversation. Does the topic require mathematics at the level of the course? Can the student obtain or generate data if data is involved? Is there a result to reflect on, or does the work simply describe something? Can the whole thing be done in 12 to 20 pages without either padding or compression?

The table below sets out the test we apply. It is deliberately blunt, because the commonest outcome of skipping it is a student three weeks in with a topic that cannot score, and three weeks is not recoverable when the deadline collides with mock examinations and the Extended Essay in the second year.

On the boundary: the student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes every word. The tutor tests viability, explains the criteria, questions the structure and comments on drafts. One operator competing for these searches sells completed internal assessments at a published price; a malpractice finding from that falls on the candidate, which in this case is a sixteen or seventeen year old.

06

Fitting mathematics into a week that includes a long commute

A Diploma student travelling from these clusters to Silicon Oasis or Mirdif loses something like ten hours a week to the journey. Mathematics is unusually sensitive to that, because the subject rewards short frequent practice rather than long sessions, and short frequent practice needs a student who is not exhausted.

The arrangement that works is one fixed weekday session from about six, with a named evening for the practice it sets, plus a weekend morning when a full timed paper is possible. A full mathematics paper plus the mark-scheme walkthrough takes two to three hours, and that is not available on a weekday evening at any price. Students who sit one a week through the final term practise the examination rather than revising for it.

There is a specific mathematical reason to protect the practice slot rather than the session. Method habits - working shown, rounding controlled, stationary points classified - change through repetition rather than through explanation. A session that explains them and is followed by no practice has moved nothing. Twenty minutes of questions on three evenings beats one long sitting at the weekend for this particular purpose.

In Ramadan the pattern should change deliberately. The school day shortens so the bus returns earlier, but late-afternoon concentration is poor and a mathematics session at four is often wasted. Weekend mornings and post-Iftar slots work. Because no tutor is travelling, changing the pattern is a scheduling decision, and it should be fixed before the month starts rather than renegotiated weekly.

07

What mathematics tutoring costs, and which band holds what

Every figure here was published by the provider named and read in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram rate. Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. For Middle Years mathematics that band contains usable help. For Higher Level Analysis and Approaches it very rarely does, and that is the most useful thing to know about it.

Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. IB specialists run AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium named tutors reach AED 500 to 650, with BartyED at AED 650. In-home one-to-one including travel runs AED 180 to 500, per Bestimate at 180 to 350 and advertised home-tutor rates at 200 to 500.

Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for a weekly one-hour session run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support, with published online packages at AED 799 a month for eight sessions. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, which is useful context for a household budgeting both.

The verification questions matter precisely because the rate does not tell you what you are getting. Paying AED 300 an hour for somebody who cannot teach proof by induction is worse value than paying AED 200 for somebody who can, and the price alone will never reveal which is which. That is the whole argument of this page.

08

What we cannot always staff, and what we do not claim

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level in the fortnight either side of mock examinations is the combination we most often cannot staff properly, because demand across the emirate concentrates on the same specialists in the same weeks. Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level is generally available but takes longer to match than Standard Level. Middle Years mathematics is straightforward within days.

When we cannot cover a combination well, there are three honest responses and we use all three: a realistic wait, adjacent support with the boundary stated plainly, or a refusal. The one thing we will not do is put a Standard Level tutor in front of a Higher Level candidate, because the mismatch takes a term to surface and by then the year has gone.

What we do not claim, stated plainly. No office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE. No KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is the permit issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai. No approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. No guaranteed grades and no published predicted scores. No star ratings we cannot evidence with countable, dated reviews. No syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes supplied as downloads - we cite and link the official sources.

And on the regulators themselves, since the claim language above depends on them: KHDA oversees private education quality in Dubai, ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. All of them regulate schools. None licenses an individual tutor.

Where we tutor

The clusters, and where the mathematics is actually taught

No Diploma mathematics is taught inside International City, so the geography of this subject here is about which run a household is willing to make.

China Cluster and Dragon Mart

The district's commercial core with its slowest afternoon traffic. Diploma students here generally travel to Silicon Oasis, and 6.30pm is a more realistic session start than 6pm.

England and France Clusters

Dense residential blocks with many working households, where a fixed weekday slot plus a weekend morning sustains far better than scheduling renegotiated each week.

Greece, Italy and Spain Clusters

The southern blocks closest to the Ras Al Khor road, giving the quickest route to Garhoud, Nad Al Hamar and Mirdif. The least punishing commute in the district.

Persia and Russia Clusters

Heavily bus-dependent, so route timings rather than traffic set the earliest realistic session. A fixed slot matters more here than anywhere else in International City.

Morocco Cluster and Warsan Village

The lower-density edge towards the Dubai-Hatta road, from which Silicon Oasis and Academic City are reachable while avoiding the interchange at its worst.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

The nearest Diploma mathematics teaching, at GEMS Wellington Academy. Twenty-five to thirty minutes on a clear morning and considerably longer by bus in the afternoon.

Al Warqa

Universal American School carries IB programmes, making this the shortest IB run available from these clusters at around twenty minutes on a normal morning.

Mirdif

Uptown International School runs the full IB continuum, so Middle Years and Diploma mathematics sit in one school. A longer run chosen deliberately for continuity.

Al Garhoud and Nad Al Sheba

Deira International School, GEMS Modern Academy and North London Collegiate School Dubai among others, with generally the deepest mathematics offer in this part of the city.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the course and level in writing

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, from the Diploma coordinator. Without that you cannot verify anybody, because the four combinations are examined separately and need different teaching.

  2. 02

    Ask the five verification questions

Of us and of anybody else. Which combinations have you taught and how many cohorts; what do you look for in a proof by induction, or how do you teach transition matrices; which exploration criterion carries the most marks; and what would you look for in one marked paper.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, used as a diagnosis

The student works, the tutor watches, and a timed paper gets marked against the published mark scheme. Afterwards a written note naming the three or four recurring reasons for lost marks and what the first six sessions will target.

  4. 04

Set the slot and protect the practice

One fixed weekday session from about six, a named evening for the questions it sets, and a weekend morning for full timed papers. Mathematics method habits change through repetition, so the practice slot matters more than the session length.

  5. 05

Test the exploration topic before any writing

Mathematical level, data availability, something to conclude, scope and genuine involvement. Half an hour spent here protects the criterion carrying six of the twenty marks, and three weeks lost to an unviable topic cannot be recovered.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We publish the questions you should test us with

Which combinations, how many cohorts, what you look for in a proof by induction, how you teach transition matrices, which exploration criterion carries most marks. They work on any provider, which is why nobody else prints them.

Four combinations, not one subject

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level and Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level have almost nothing in common operationally. Strength in calculus and proof does not imply strength in statistical inference and graph theory, and we match accordingly.

Claims checked rather than made

A permit from the Dubai authority covers training institutes with premises, not individual tutors. Examiner status cannot be verified by a parent and confers no access to marking. Ratings without countable dated reviews are worth nothing. We hold and claim none of these.

Diagnosis before any teaching

Content gap, method habit or timing problem - three causes, three different plans, and one marked timed paper distinguishes them. A first session that teaches instead of diagnosing usually costs a term of mistargeted work.

Exploration viability tested first

Use of mathematics carries six of the twenty marks and depends on a topic choice made before any writing. Half an hour of blunt questions about level, data, scope and engagement prevents the commonest failure in the task.

We say which combinations we cannot staff

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level around the mock window is the hardest thing on our list, because every Diploma family in the emirate wants it in the same fortnight. You hear that at the enquiry stage with a realistic wait.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in International City: your questions answered

Is there anyone near International City who knows the IB maths syllabus?+

Within a short drive, probably not. There is no IB World School in the district, the nearest Diploma teaching is in Silicon Oasis with Al Warqa and Mirdif beyond, and the people who teach Diploma mathematics in Dubai generally live near the schools employing them. Across the emirate and online, yes - but verify rather than trust. The five questions on this page take two minutes and distinguish somebody who teaches your child's exact course from a mathematics graduate who is available.

How do I test whether a tutor really teaches Analysis and Approaches?+

Ask what they look for in a proof-by-induction answer and where students lose the marks. A tutor who teaches the course will describe the base case, the inductive step being derived rather than asserted, and the conclusion being stated - and will usually volunteer that students omit the last of those. Somebody who has not taught it will speak vaguely about showing it works for the next case. It is ordinary course content, not a trick question.

What is the equivalent test for Applications and Interpretation?+

Ask how they teach transition matrices or the Chinese postman problem. Many mathematics graduates have never encountered either, because both belong specifically to Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level rather than to a general mathematics education. A tutor who teaches the course will describe the question types and the long-run behaviour reasoning. Somebody who says yes to the subject name and cannot discuss the content has answered your real question.

A tutoring company says its tutors are approved by the Dubai authority. Is that real?+

Probably not in the way it sounds. KHDA regulates private schools in Dubai and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes that have premises and staff in the emirate. It does not approve or license individual private tutors - that is the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Ask for the permit and the premises address. IB Gram holds no such permit and has no UAE premises.

Is examiner experience worth a higher hourly rate for IB maths?+

Ask what it changes about the teaching, specifically, and treat a vague answer as the answer. A parent cannot independently verify an individual's current examiner appointment, and examiner status confers no access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content. It may indicate familiarity with mark schemes, which is genuinely useful - but so does being able to walk a student through one, which you can test directly in a trial lesson for nothing.

Which exploration criterion carries the most marks?+

Use of mathematics, with six of the twenty. Presentation and mathematical communication carry four each, and personal engagement and reflection three each. That split is the most actionable fact about the task, because it means the topic choice - made before any writing - determines the largest single allocation. A topic that reduces to arithmetic and one graph cannot score well on use of mathematics however neatly the report is produced.

How do we know an exploration topic will work before starting?+

Test five things. Does the topic require techniques from your child's own course, or does it reduce to arithmetic? Is the data obtainable, or would it have to be invented? Is there a result that can be questioned and evaluated, or only a description? Can it be done properly in 12 to 20 pages? And can your child explain why they chose it? Half an hour on those questions prevents the commonest failure in the task.

What should the first session with a maths tutor actually do?+

Diagnose, not teach. The hour should establish which of three causes dominates: a content gap, a method habit, or a timing problem. The method is to watch the student work at the correct level and then mark a timed paper against the published mark scheme, writing down the reason for every lost mark. Marks lost with correct final answers mean method; marks lost on one topic mean content; marks lost in the last third mean pacing.

My son understands maths but his test marks are poor. What is that?+

Almost always method, and it is the most common presenting problem from this district. The specific habits are working omitted so a correct answer scores one mark out of four, rounding applied at an intermediate step so later accuracy marks fall, stationary points found but never classified, vector questions attempted without a sketch, and the final long question abandoned rather than attempted for partial credit. One marked timed paper names his three or four reasons.

Can a Standard Level tutor teach my daughter at Higher Level?+

Not adequately, and this is the mismatch most likely to go undetected for a term. Early Higher Level teaching overlaps with Standard Level content, so the gap does not appear immediately - it appears when proof by induction, complex numbers, vectors and the heavier integration arrive, or when matrices and graph theory do in Applications and Interpretation. Ask which level they have taught and for how many cohorts before the first session rather than after the third.

How does the commute affect maths tutoring from these clusters?+

Mathematics rewards short frequent practice, and short frequent practice needs a student who is not exhausted. From International City a Diploma student loses around ten hours a week to travel, so the arrangement that works is one fixed weekday session from about six, a named evening for the questions it sets, and a weekend morning when a full timed paper is possible. Method habits change through repetition, so protecting the practice slot matters more than lengthening the session.

What does Diploma maths tutoring cost here, and does price indicate quality?+

Market figures read in October 2026: qualified subject tutors online at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200; IB specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270; premium named tutors at AED 500 to 650, with BartyED at AED 650. Price does not indicate course knowledge. Paying AED 300 for somebody who cannot teach proof by induction is worse value than AED 200 for somebody who can, and only the questions reveal which.

Are the star ratings on tutoring sites reliable?+

Treat them sceptically unless the reviews themselves are visible, countable and dated. One competitor in this market publishes two different aggregate ratings on the same page; another shows a five-star average from twenty reviews beside a claim of a claim of several thousand students. Self-asserted review markup that does not match a visible set of real reviews is against Google's structured-data policy and, as a commercial representation in the UAE, a consumer-protection exposure. We publish none we cannot evidence that way.

Is a permit required for private maths tuition in these clusters?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, so it cannot legitimately be priced into a rate. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any figure quoted at you as unverified. Ask to see it; somebody who holds one shows it without hesitation.

What if you cannot find the right maths tutor for us?+

We say so at the enquiry stage. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level in the fortnight either side of mock examinations is the hardest combination on our list, because demand across the emirate concentrates on the same specialists in the same weeks. In that case you get a realistic wait, or adjacent support with the boundary stated plainly, or a refusal. What you will not get is a Standard Level tutor in front of a Higher Level candidate.
