Six different people answer a near-me search. They are not interchangeable

The honest answer to "is there anyone near me who knows this syllabus" starts with a different question: who is it that actually responds when you search? In Dubai, the answer is six distinct categories of provider, and a parent in Sobha Hartland comparing three quotes is often comparing three different business models without realising it. The rates look similar. The accountability, the legal position and the subject knowledge do not.

First, school teachers tutoring in the evenings, who know a specification well and are bound by rules about which students they may teach. Second, university students and recent graduates, who are inexpensive and genuinely useful for a missed topic. Third, full-time freelance tutors, who vary more than any other category because nothing in the market distinguishes a good one from a confident one. Fourth, tuition centres with premises, which are a different regulated entity entirely. Fifth, agencies that match and take a margin. Sixth, international marketplaces that present a local appearance and deliver from elsewhere, sometimes behind a non-UAE phone number.

Each category has a different answer to the syllabus question. A moonlighting teacher usually knows one awarding body thoroughly and may assume the others are similar. A university student may know the subject and not the mark scheme. A freelance tutor may have taught four specifications or none. A marketplace may not know which board your child sits because nobody asked. That is why this page spends its space on verification rather than on reassurance: the useful thing we can give you is a way to test the claim, not another version of it.

There is also a legal dimension that almost nobody in this market explains. Private tutoring in the UAE is permit-regulated. MoHRE issues a private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Because it is free, a tutor has no cost-based reason not to hold it, which makes it a reasonable thing to ask about and a telling thing to be evasive about.

IB Gram sits in the fifth category and says so: we match tutors and deliver lessons one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, because home visits are a service we offer only in India, and we do not route UAE families to a non-UAE number while implying otherwise. The sections below give the category comparison, the permit table, the verification checks, the availability picture and the administrative details of the June and November series that almost nobody passes on to parents. None of it promises a grade; all of it is checkable, which is the more useful thing to offer a parent comparing three quotes.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Which category of tutor suits your child depends on where they are in the IGCSE course. These three stages need different things, and matching the stage to the provider type saves both money and a wasted term.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9, before the course begins

No specification exists yet, which means the syllabus question hardly matters and the cheapest competent tutor is often the right one. What matters here is securing algebraic fluency, reading stamina and scientific vocabulary. A student who reaches Year 10 without those spends two years catching up while new content arrives weekly, and that is the expensive scenario this stage prevents.

Transfers between schools and curricula are common in the central corridor during these years, and a transfer leaves specific identifiable gaps rather than general weakness. For a Sobha Hartland family, one diagnostic session on a transfer student is worth more than a term of general support.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Years 10 and 11, the examination course

Eight to ten subjects sat as external examinations, with tiering set by the school where it applies. This is the stage where the specification question becomes decisive, because the awarding body determines paper structure, tier names, calculator rules and how practical or spoken components are assessed. A tutor who knows the subject but not the specification can look wholly competent while rehearsing the wrong paper.

Dubai schools use more than one awarding body, sometimes within the same school for different subjects. Ask the examinations officer for the code in writing, subject by subject. In this corridor it is a two-minute email that eliminates the most common cause of wasted tutoring hours.

Post-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

After results, A Level or IB Diploma

IGCSE grades gate post-16 entry, and schools set their own thresholds for A Level and Diploma courses. A bare pass is not the same as readiness: a student heading for Higher Level sciences or A Level Mathematics needs fluency rather than a borderline grade, which is a different target from the one most Year 11 revision aims at.

Several schools near Sobha Hartland run both A Levels and the IB Diploma after IGCSE, so results day decides the next two years. Families who look up post-16 entry requirements during Year 10 generally buy far less tutoring in Year 12 than those who wait.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

An IGCSE student carries eight to ten subjects, and availability of a genuinely specification-literate tutor varies by subject rather than by neighbourhood. These are the subjects we cover, with the detail that determines whether a given tutor is the right one.

Mathematics

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

The best-covered subject in the market and therefore the one where you can afford to be selective. Verify that the tutor knows whether your child's specification tests non-calculator arithmetic, because that single fact changes the whole drill.

Physics

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Reasonably covered. The verification question here is how practical skills are assessed on your specification, since an alternative-to-practical route needs rehearsing and a written-paper model does not.

Chemistry

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Reasonably covered at the lower tiers and thinner at the top. Ask the tutor to describe where students lose marks in mole calculations; a specific answer separates subject knowledge from subject familiarity.

Biology

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Well covered. Terminology precision and data interpretation carry the marks, so ask how the tutor teaches command terms rather than how they teach content.

English Language

First Language and Second Language

Two distinct qualifications, and students are sometimes entered for the one that suits the timetable. A tutor who does not ask which is being sat is not ready to teach it.

English Literature

Single tier

Set texts vary by school and year, so the tutor must teach the actual texts. Thinner than Language in this market, particularly for less commonly chosen texts.

Economics

Core and Extended

Moderately covered. Diagram accuracy and percentage work carry the marks, and the evaluation marks are verbal, which means a numerate student can do well once the arithmetic is secure.

Business Studies

Core and Extended

Well covered. The mark-losing pattern is answering generically rather than applying to the given case study, which a competent tutor will identify from one marked paper.

Computer Science

Core and Extended

Thinner than the sciences. Pseudocode conventions differ between specifications, so this is a subject where the code genuinely must be confirmed before a tutor is booked.

Additional Mathematics

Single tier

Thin. Taken by stronger candidates in some corridor schools as a bridge to A Level or Higher Level maths, and worth booking earlier than you think necessary because availability is limited.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

The same subjects viewed by specification, since the code rather than the subject name determines the paper your child sits. Ask the examinations officer for it before booking anything.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Under the syllabus in use from 2025, each tier pairs a non-calculator paper with a calculator paper. A tutor who does not mention the non-calculator paper has not taught this specification recently.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1

Foundation and Higher

Two papers of two hours at 50% each, with a calculator permitted throughout. The drill that matters here is multi-step problem structuring rather than mental arithmetic.

Cambridge IGCSE sciences 0620, 0625, 0610

Core and Extended

Tiered papers with an alternative-to-practical route available for experimental skills. Ask which practical option the centre uses, because it changes what revision looks like.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences 4CH1, 4PH1, 4BI1

Foundation and Higher

Practical understanding is assessed within the written papers rather than through a separate practical examination, so experimental method is revised in writing.

Oxford AQA International GCSE

Varies by subject

In use at some Dubai centres and the body most often assumed away by tutors. Paper structures differ, so the code must be confirmed rather than inferred from the subject name.

Cambridge IGCSE English 0500 and 0510

First Language and Second Language

Different components and in some routes a speaking element. A student entered for the wrong one works to the wrong criteria for two years, and it is worth confirming which applies.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one-to-one and online. The choice follows the stage of the course and the kind of problem, and the free trial lesson is where that gets settled rather than assumed from a form.

Single-subject weekly

One subject, one tutor, one slot a week, with the specification code confirmed before the first session. The standard arrangement and the right one when a single subject is dragging. The tutor works a little ahead of the school's scheme of work so lessons prepare rather than patch, and the tier is reviewed early against the student's own marked work.

  • Specification and tier confirmed before teaching begins
  • Named practice after each session, marked before the next
  • Tier reviewed against marked work in the first fortnight
  • Written note to parents on what is moving and what is not

Diagnostic and catch-up block

Three to five sessions, usually for a transfer student or a student who has missed teaching. The first session establishes what is actually missing rather than assuming the whole year needs repeating, which is the common error with mid-year arrivals. The block then closes the specific gaps and ends, and most transfer students need nothing further.

  • First session spent establishing the gaps, in writing
  • Targeted at identified gaps, not at re-teaching a year
  • Ends on the agreed date rather than converting to weekly
  • Particularly suited to mid-year school transfers

Pre-series intensive

Two or three sessions a week for six to ten weeks before the June or November series, built from the student's own mock papers and matched to the correct specification's paper structure. Some topics are deliberately set aside because the window is short, and that decision is made explicitly with the student rather than quietly.

  • First session spent marking the mock question by question
  • Whole papers under timed conditions in the right format
  • An explicit list of topics not being revised
  • Fixed end date with no automatic renewal after the series

The six providers who answer a near-me search, compared

Three quotes from a near-me search can look like three versions of the same thing and be three different businesses. The table sets out the six categories operating in Dubai with what each is good at, what each tends to get wrong, and what the permit position is. None of these categories is bad. Matching the wrong one to your problem is what costs money.

The pattern worth noticing is that cost and accountability move independently. A university student is cheap and has no institutional backing if the match fails. A tuition centre has premises, a licence and a timetable, and correspondingly little flexibility. An agency adds a margin and, if it is doing its job, adds replacement if the match is wrong and a check on the tutor's permit. A moonlighting school teacher may be the most specification-literate person available and is also the one most constrained by rules about which students they may teach.

The category that deserves the most scrutiny is the international marketplace, because it is the one designed to look like something else. Several providers ranking for Dubai queries present a local appearance and route families to a non-UAE number, quote in US dollars, or name no UAE neighbourhood anywhere on the page while claiming local coverage. There is nothing wrong with a tutor based outside the UAE teaching a UAE student, provided you are told. The problem is the concealment, and the test is simple: ask where the tutor is and what time zone they work to.

02

Is the tutor legally permitted to teach in the UAE?

This is the question nobody in the market answers properly and it has a clear answer. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and MoHRE's own service page for it is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Two facts about it are worth holding onto. It is granted free of charge for two years, which means a tutor has no financial reason to avoid holding one. And eligibility is broad: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students may all apply. So the permit is not a quality signal, it is a compliance signal, and a tutor who cannot or will not discuss it is telling you something.

Those offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so disregard any specific amount you see quoted in a parents' group or on a competitor's page, including the figure that circulates for this. One further constraint matters for families considering their child's own teacher: in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat that as press-reported and verify against current policy before relying on it.

What "knows the IGCSE syllabus" actually means, and how to verify it

  • Can they name the awarding body and specification code before you tell them?
  • Do they use the correct tier names for that board?
  • Do they know the calculator rules for each paper?
  • Can they describe how practical or spoken components are assessed?
  • Did they ask for your child's own marked work before teaching anything?
  • Will they confirm, if asked, that they hold a MoHRE private tuition permit?

Every provider claims syllabus knowledge and the claim is almost never defined. At IGCSE it has a precise meaning, and a Sobha Hartland parent can test the whole of it in a single trial lesson without understanding the subject themselves. These are the questions we would apply to our own tutors, and we would rather you asked them of us than took the claim on trust.

A tutor who knows the specification can name the awarding body and the code without being told. They can state the paper structure and the tier names correctly: Core and Extended for Cambridge, Foundation and Higher for Pearson. They know whether a calculator is permitted in each paper, which in maths determines the entire drill. They know how practical or spoken components are assessed on that specification. They treat command terms as instructions with different mark expectations rather than as synonyms.

And they can tell you what is costing your child marks, which they can only do by looking at your child's own work. That is the real test, and it separates a tutor performing competence from one demonstrating it. A tutor who spends the trial lesson explaining the subject in general terms is auditioning. A tutor who asks for a marked paper, reads it, and names the pattern in specific language has done the job. Ask afterwards for that account in writing, and judge its precision rather than its tone. A tutor who is pleasant and general will be good company for a year and leave the grade exactly where it started.

Online against nearby for an IGCSE student in Hartland

A near-me search has already narrowed the field before you have compared anything, so it is worth seeing what the two delivery models do differently for an IGCSE student specifically. The relevant variables here are not identical to a Diploma student's, because the IGCSE problem is usually breadth: nine subjects, several mediocre, and a parent unsure which to attack.

On matching to the specification, online wins decisively, because the pool is the whole market and the code can be honoured rather than approximated. On covering more than one subject, online wins because a different specialist can take each subject rather than one person being stretched across four. On continuity, online wins in a community like this one, where families move apartment or school more often than they expect and an in-home arrangement has to be rebuilt each time.

On evidence, online tends to win because written feedback and marked practice survive in a way that verbal comments at a kitchen table do not, and a parent can check they exist without understanding the subject. On cost, online wins by the travel premium, roughly AED 30 to 150 an hour in this market. The one variable where a nearby tutor has a genuine claim is supervision of a reluctant student, which is a real category rather than a marketing objection. We do not offer home visits in the UAE, so if that is the requirement we will say so rather than talk you out of it.

Where tutor availability is genuinely thin, and what we do about it

No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit, and several conceal non-UAE delivery entirely. Since the question behind this page is whether anyone available actually knows the syllabus, the useful thing we can offer is an honest map of where supply is good and where it is not, with the fallback stated in advance rather than discovered in week three.

It is also worth saying why availability moves at all. The tutors who know a specification best are usually teaching it full time, so their capacity for evening work is a few hours a week and those hours are taken early in the academic year. A family asking in September has a wider choice than the same family asking in March, which is the one genuine argument for booking before a crisis rather than after one.

The pattern follows how many schools teach a subject rather than how hard it is. Maths, Biology and Business Studies are well covered. Physics, Chemistry, Economics and English Language are reasonable. The thin areas are English Literature where set texts are unusual, Computer Science, Additional Mathematics, second languages beyond the commonly taught ones, and any subject entered through Oxford AQA, simply because fewer tutors have taught that specification.

What we do when a subject is thin is tell you before you book. The options are a different time slot, a short wait while we look, or a tutor based outside the UAE who has taught that specification and works to Gulf Standard Time, disclosed as such. What we will not do is accept the booking and let a tutor learn an unfamiliar specification on your time, because the differences matter most in the final eight weeks when there is no time left to absorb them. The table states the picture as it stands, and it changes, so treat it as the start of a conversation rather than a fixed list.

June and November: the administrative details nobody passes on

UAE candidates sit the June series and the November series. The February and March series that circulates in online revision guides is offered to India only, and a Dubai plan built around it is wrong in a way that matters, because a parent acts on exam months. If you see those months in material sold to you, question the rest of the document.

Here is the detail almost nobody relays. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, and its guidance states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, warning that Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. A parent revising from a timetable found online, rather than from the one their school issued, is exposed to exactly that. Ask the school which zone the centre is in and use their timetable only.

On the pattern of dates, the published record is instructive. For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with results following in January: November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. For the summer series, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. Those are past dates, cited so you can see the rhythm. For anything ahead, open the awarding body's live timetable rather than any restatement, including this page's, because Pearson publishes provisional timetables and revises them.

KHDA, the Hartland schools and the five-subject equivalency rule

Dubai's private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Annual inspection runs on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, published school by school. For a Hartland parent the departmental commentary in a report is more informative than the band, because a strong department can sit inside an averagely rated school.

The scale of the market explains the variation in tutoring quality. Dubai's private sector served 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools creating 16,846 new places; six new schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6%. A market that large, growing that fast, with that many curricula, produces a tutoring supply where nothing distinguishes an experienced specification teacher from a confident generalist unless a parent asks. Hence this page.

The grade's later use is worth planning for. For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. Alongside that, equivalency requires one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One ranking competitor publishes a requirement of six subjects, which is incorrect. Equivalency is a process the ministry performs; verify your own case through its attestation channel rather than through any tutoring service, this one included, and do not treat tutoring as a requirement for it.

On credentials, plainly: IB Gram is not KHDA approved, ADEK approved or accredited by Cambridge, Pearson or Oxford AQA, and does not claim to be. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. That permit is the only thing the phrase could properly refer to, and it does not describe an individual tutor at all.

08

Coursework, speaking components and practical work: the limits

Most IGCSE subjects are assessed entirely by written paper, which removes much of the temptation that exists at Diploma level. Where a coursework, portfolio or spoken component does exist, the rule is unchanged: the work must be the student's own, and a tutor offering to produce it is offering malpractice with the consequence falling on the student. At least one operator ranking for UAE curriculum queries sells completed assessed work at a published price, which tells you what the market will do if nobody draws a line.

What a tutor legitimately does with such a component is explain the criteria, question a chosen focus until it is workable, teach the skills it requires, rehearse a spoken component in the format the specification sets, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. What a tutor does not do is choose the focus, supply content, write or rewrite text, or hand over an example close enough to copy. We say this to the student in the first session rather than burying it, because a fifteen-year-old under pressure deserves the boundary in advance.

Practical science deserves its own note because it is the question Hartland parents ask most often about online tuition. Nobody runs a laboratory over video, and a provider implying otherwise is overselling. What is taught online is the examinable part: experimental method, independent and dependent variables, controls, uncertainty, graph work and the written conventions the mark scheme rewards. Whether that is assessed through an alternative-to-practical paper or inside the written papers depends on the specification, which is one more reason to get the code. We also do not reproduce or distribute syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; we reference them and link to the awarding body's own page.

09

Getting started from Sobha Hartland, and what we disclose up front

Start by emailing the school's examinations officer for the awarding body, the specification code and the tier in each subject you are considering. Send that with the latest grades labelled as mock or classwork, the teacher's last comment quoted rather than summarised, and the time the school day ends. In Hartland that last detail is better than in most of Dubai, because two schools sit inside the community and some students are home before three.

We propose a tutor and run a free trial lesson, which is a diagnosis rather than a sales call. Run the verification checks from earlier on this page. Ask where the tutor is based and what time zone they work to, ask them to name the specification before you tell them, and ask afterwards for a written account of what is costing marks. If the answers are vague or the location is evasive, do not book, with us or with anyone.

What we disclose up front, because this market generally does not: we are a matching service delivering online, our tutors may be based in the UAE or outside it and we will tell you which, we do not send tutors to UAE homes, we hold no KHDA or awarding-body accreditation, and some subjects on the coverage table above may take a week or be unavailable. If any of that rules us out for your situation, that is a better outcome than finding out in week three, and the trial lesson costs nothing either way.

Where we tutor

Sobha Hartland and the areas a near-me search also covers

A near-me search from Hartland returns providers across the central corridor, so these notes describe what each community contributes to the tutoring market rather than what it looks like.

Sobha Hartland

Two schools inside the community, so some students are home early and a 4pm session is realistic. Local demand is high enough that the better freelance tutors here are usually already booked by October.

Meydan

Shares schools and the same evening slots with Hartland. Families here frequently find that the tutor they were recommended is the same one a Hartland neighbour is already using.

Nad Al Sheba

One of the few nearby communities where school staff actually live, which is why moonlighting-teacher arrangements turn up more often in near-me results from here.

Business Bay

Transient tower population with frequent mid-year school transfers, so Year 10 and 11 arrivals are common and need specification-specific catch-up rather than general help.

Downtown Dubai

Easiest access to tuition centres with premises, which are a separately regulated category and worth distinguishing from an individual tutor when comparing quotes.

Al Jaddaf

Several schools nearby and short local commutes, so sessions can start soon after the day ends. Agencies list this area heavily because it is easy to serve.

Al Quoz

Where most of the corridor's centres sit. If a near-me result is a centre rather than a person, it is probably based here, and the permit position is different for a centre.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Long internal drives relative to the map, which is why in-home quotes from here sit at the top of the band without anything academic changing.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sobha Hartland

Sobha Hartland, Meydan and Nad Al Sheba

The schools nearest Hartland run British-curriculum routes to IGCSE alongside IB provision, and they do not all use the same awarding body. A tutor recommended by a neighbour may therefore know a different specification from the one your child sits.

Al Safa, Downtown, Al Quoz and Al Barsha

The established British-curriculum schools Hartland families drive to for a particular IGCSE and A Level route. Larger departments here stream by tier early, which is when a parent should establish what tier their child is being prepared for.

  • Safa British School
  • Jumeirah College
  • The English College Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail
  • Horizon International School

Schools are named as context for the central-corridor education market; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them, and current curricula, awarding bodies and inspection outcomes should be checked on KHDA's own school listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the awarding body, code and tier in writing

One email to the examinations officer, subject by subject. It eliminates the most common cause of wasted tutoring hours, which is a competent tutor rehearsing the wrong paper, and it gives you something concrete to test a prospective tutor against.

  2. 02

Ask us where the tutor is based

We will tell you whether a proposed tutor is in the UAE or elsewhere and what time zone they work to, before the first lesson. Several providers in this market conceal that behind a local-looking presence, and the concealment rather than the location is the problem.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, then run the checks

The first session costs nothing. Ask the tutor to name the specification before you tell them, check they use the right tier names, and ask afterwards for a written account of what is costing marks. Vague answers are a reason not to book at any rate.

  4. 04

Review the tier early, not in Year 11

A tier entry sets a grade ceiling for two years and is occasionally wrong in a way that is visible in one marked paper. We flag it in the first fortnight so you have evidence for a conversation with the department while a change is still possible.

  5. 05

    Practice set, practice marked

Each session ends with named past-paper questions from the correct specification, and the next begins with them marked against the published criteria. Checking that this is happening needs no subject knowledge from you, which makes it the most practical accountability available.

  6. 06

Review against the series, then stop

The plan is checked against the June or November series and the block ends when its purpose is met. If the tier was the problem rather than the teaching, we will say so even though it ends the arrangement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We name the categories, including our own

Six kinds of provider answer a near-me search in Dubai and they are not interchangeable. We set out what each is good at and where each fails, and we say which one we are rather than implying a local presence we do not have.

The permit explained properly

The MoHRE private tuition permit exists under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is free for two years, and covers a broad set of eligible applicants. We explain it and link to the official route. We do not publish the unverified fine figure that circulates in this market.

Verification instead of reassurance

Rather than claiming syllabus knowledge, we give you six questions that test it in one lesson, including the ones that catch a tutor who has taught a different awarding body. Apply them to us as readily as to anyone else.

Coverage limits published

Our table says which IGCSE subjects are well covered, which are thin and what the fallback is. No competitor in this market discloses a coverage limit, and several hide non-UAE delivery rather than disclosing it.

The timetable zone warning passed on

Cambridge allocates centres to six administrative zones and accepts no responsibility for a candidate who misses an examination after using the wrong zone's timetable. Almost nobody tells parents this, and it is worth more than most revision advice.

No borrowed credentials

We explain what KHDA and MoHRE do and link to their own material. We do not describe IB Gram or any tutor as KHDA approved or Cambridge accredited, because none of it is true of us and the phrase appears often enough in near-me results to be a useful filter.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sobha Hartland: your questions answered

Who actually turns up when I search for an IGCSE tutor near me in Dubai?+

Six quite different kinds of provider: school teachers tutoring in the evenings, university students and recent graduates, full-time freelance tutors, tuition centres with premises, matching agencies, and international marketplaces presenting a local appearance. They differ in cost, in accountability and in legal position. A moonlighting teacher usually knows one specification thoroughly; a university student is cheap and rarely mark-scheme literate; a centre has structure and little flexibility. Matching the wrong category to your problem is what wastes money, more often than the hourly rate does.

Are your IGCSE tutors MoHRE licensed, and can I ask them directly?+

You can and should ask, and a permitted tutor will not mind. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Because it costs nothing, a tutor has no financial reason to avoid holding one, which makes evasiveness informative. Note that the permit is a compliance signal rather than a quality one: eligibility extends to school teachers, employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen.

Do tutors travel to homes in Sobha Hartland?+

Ours do not. IB Gram delivers one-to-one tuition over live video throughout the UAE, and home visits are a service we offer only in India. We state it plainly because near me is the phrase parents search and leaving the impression open would be easy. Local in-home arrangements certainly exist in this community, and in-home rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included. If physical supervision is what your child needs, that is the right route and this page gives you the figures to judge it.

How can I check a tutor knows my child's specification and not just the subject?+

Six checks, all testable in one lesson. Can they name the awarding body and code before you tell them? Do they use the correct tier names, Core and Extended for Cambridge or Foundation and Higher for Pearson? Do they know the calculator rules for each paper? Can they describe how practical or spoken components are assessed on that specification? Did they ask for your child's marked work before teaching anything? And will they confirm they hold a MoHRE permit? Six yeses is a demonstration; a warm manner is not.

Is it a problem if the tutor is based outside the UAE?+

Not in itself, provided you are told. A specialist elsewhere who has taught your child's exact specification and works to Gulf Standard Time is often a better match than a generalist nearby. The problem is concealment: several providers ranking for Dubai queries route families to non-UAE numbers, quote in US dollars, or name no UAE neighbourhood while implying local coverage. Ask where the tutor sits and what time zone they keep. We will tell you before the first lesson, and we flag it in the coverage table when a subject is only available that way.

A teacher at my child's school has offered evening sessions. Is that allowed?+

It is usually the wrong arrangement and in Abu Dhabi it is barred. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat the detail as press-reported and verify against current policy before relying on it. Beyond the rules, a second explanation from outside the school is often more useful than more of the same one.

What is the fine for tutoring in Dubai without a permit?+

No figure can honestly be given, which is itself worth knowing. Official sources state that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws, and press reporting records that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties. A figure circulating online could not be verified against any official source, so we do not publish it and you should treat any site that does with suspicion about the rest of its content.

Which IGCSE subjects are hardest to find a tutor for in the UAE?+

English Literature where the set texts are unusual, Computer Science, Additional Mathematics, second languages beyond the commonly taught ones, and any subject entered through Oxford AQA, simply because fewer tutors have taught that specification. Mathematics, Biology and Business Studies are well covered; Physics, Chemistry, Economics and English Language are reasonable. We publish that picture before you book, with the fallback stated, rather than accepting a booking and having a tutor learn an unfamiliar specification on your time.

What should I use as my child's exam timetable?+

Only the one the school issues. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and its guidance states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, warning that Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. A timetable found online may belong to a different zone. Ask the examinations officer which zone your centre is in, and for anything ahead of time open the awarding body's live timetable rather than a restatement of it.

How quickly can you find a tutor once we decide?+

For the well-covered subjects, usually days, and sometimes the same day if you send a photograph of a marked paper with the specification code. For thinner subjects, a week or more, and occasionally we cannot cover it at all, in which case we say so. The free trial lesson comes before any commitment, so the timeline you should plan around is trial lesson first, decision second. What we will not do is fill the slot with someone who has not taught the specification in order to answer quickly.

Is a tuition centre a better bet than an individual tutor?+

It is a different thing rather than a better one. A centre has premises, a KHDA Educational Services Permit as a training institute, a timetable and group economics that make it the cheapest option per head. What it has less of is flexibility and individual diagnosis: a habit such as never writing working will not be noticed in a class of six. Centres usually teach one awarding body, which matters if your child's school uses another. For a shared topic gap across a cohort, a centre is often the efficient answer.

How are practical science skills taught if lessons are online?+

The examinable part is taught and the laboratory part is not, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. Online sessions cover experimental method, independent and dependent variables, controls, uncertainty, graph work and the written conventions the mark scheme rewards. Whether those are assessed through an alternative-to-practical paper or inside the written papers depends on the specification, so the code matters here too. The hands-on work belongs to the school's practical programme, and a good tutor will ask what that programme has actually covered this term.

My child transferred schools mid-year. What kind of tutoring do they need?+

A diagnostic block rather than a weekly arrangement, in most cases. Transfers leave specific gaps rather than general weakness, and the common error is re-teaching a whole year when three topics are missing. Three to five sessions, with the first spent establishing what is actually absent in writing, usually closes it. The second thing to check is whether the new school uses a different awarding body from the old one, because a student who has studied one specification for a year and will sit another needs that difference mapped.

Does the IGCSE grade matter for staying in the UAE for university?+

It matters for Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, which requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from those five, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. One ranking competitor states six subjects, which is wrong. Equivalency is a process the ministry performs, so verify your own case through its attestation channel and do not treat tutoring as a requirement for it.

What do you disclose that other providers do not?+

Four things, up front. That we are a matching service delivering online rather than a local presence. That a proposed tutor may be based in the UAE or outside it, and which. That we send no tutors to UAE homes at all. And that we hold no KHDA or awarding-body accreditation, because a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a licence for training institutes with premises and we do not have one. If any of that rules us out for your situation, better to establish it now than in week three.

What should I send to get a useful recommendation?+

Five things, and a photograph of one marked paper is worth more than all of them. The awarding body and specification code per subject, from the examinations officer. The tier where tiering applies. The latest grades, labelled as mock or classwork. The teacher's last written comment, quoted rather than paraphrased. And the time the school day ends, which in Sobha Hartland is often earlier than elsewhere because two schools sit inside the community, making a genuinely early session slot possible.

Test the claim rather than taking it

Every provider answering your near-me search says it knows the IGCSE syllabus. The difference between the ones that do and the ones that sound like it is testable in a single lesson, and the questions are on this page. Email the examinations officer for the awarding body, code and tier, send them with the latest grades and the teacher's own words, and we will propose a tutor and run the first session free. Ask where that tutor is based, ask them to name the specification before you tell them, and judge the written diagnosis afterwards.
