IGCSE Maths Tutor in Sobha Hartland

Parents looking for an IGCSE maths tutor in Sobha Hartland are really asking whether anyone available knows the specification their child sits, rather than maths in general. That is a fair worry and it is testable. This page sets out what the two main specifications actually contain, how the mark scheme awards credit, what each tier can reach, and the questions that reveal in one lesson whether a tutor has taught the paper. Lessons are one-to-one and online, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Topic-level differences between the two main specifications, set out
  • Method, accuracy and independent marks explained so you can check working
  • Tier ceilings named, with the review a Year 10 parent should ask for
  • Free trial lesson, then a written account of where marks are going

IB & IGCSE in Sobha Hartland

What a maths tutor has to know that is not simply maths

A good mathematician is not automatically a good IGCSE maths tutor, and the gap between the two is where a Sobha Hartland family's money gets wasted. An engineer can solve every question on a Higher tier paper and still not know that a student who writes only the correct answer forfeits the method marks, or that one specification tests arithmetic without a calculator and the other does not, or that a Core entry caps the grade regardless of performance. Those are facts about the examination rather than about mathematics.

So the honest answer to the question behind this search is that plenty of people near you can do the maths, and far fewer know the paper. The second group is small in every Dubai community, not because Hartland is unusual but because the people who know a specification best are usually teaching it full time at a school and have a few evening hours a week at most. Those hours are taken early in the academic year, which is why asking in September gives a wider choice than asking in March.

Rather than offer reassurance, this page gives you the content. It sets out what the two main specifications actually demand topic by topic, including where they diverge, because a tutor who has taught only one usually assumes the other is the same. It explains how a maths mark scheme awards credit, so you can look at your own child's marked paper and see where the marks went. It states what each tier can reach, which is the single most consequential fact in Year 10 and the one schools decide without much discussion.

The practical use of all this is a short list of questions. If a prospective tutor can name the awarding body before you tell them, use the right tier vocabulary, say whether a calculator is permitted in each paper, and describe what an M mark is, they have taught this examination. If they talk about enjoying maths and building confidence, they may be perfectly pleasant and they have not answered the question. Both outcomes are worth knowing in the first conversation rather than in the final term.

IB Gram delivers IGCSE maths tuition to Sobha Hartland as one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the tutor matched to the specification rather than to the postcode. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. The sections below give the topic comparison, the mark-scheme mechanics, the tier ceilings, the resit calendar and what we will not do with assessed work. Nothing here promises a grade, and anyone promising one in maths at this level is describing a sales position rather than a teaching one.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The specification question looks different at each stage of the course, because what a tutor needs to know changes as the examination gets closer. These three stages carry different answers for a Sobha Hartland family.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9, before a specification exists

No examination board applies yet, so specification knowledge hardly matters and a competent mathematician is enough. What matters is building the two things the IGCSE course assumes and does not teach: fluent algebraic manipulation and confident arithmetic without a calculator. A student entering Year 10 without those spends two years catching up while new content arrives weekly, and no amount of examination technique compensates.

Mid-year transfers between schools and between curricula are common in the central corridor, and they leave identifiable gaps rather than general weakness. For a Hartland family with a transfer student, one diagnostic session that writes down exactly what is missing is worth more than a term of unfocused support.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Years 10 and 11, the examination course

Two papers, each carrying half the grade, with no coursework component to absorb a bad day. The tier is set by the school, usually in Year 10, and it determines the grade range available. This is the stage where specification knowledge becomes decisive, because the content lists, the calculator rules and the paper structures differ between awarding bodies in ways that change what should be practised.

Dubai schools use more than one awarding body, sometimes different ones for different subjects within a single school. Ask the examinations officer for the maths code in writing. It is a two-minute email and it eliminates the commonest cause of hours that do not count.

Post-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

What the maths grade has to carry

The IGCSE maths grade gates the post-16 maths route. Schools set their own thresholds for A Level Mathematics and for IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, often a 7 or equivalent. More importantly, a bare pass at the threshold is not readiness: both courses assume algebraic fluency that a borderline grade does not demonstrate, which is why a Year 11 block on algebra specifically is better preparation than general revision.

Several schools near Sobha Hartland offer both A Levels and the IB Diploma after IGCSE, so the maths grade decides the shape of the next two years. Families who look up the actual entry threshold during Year 10 generally need far less tutoring in Year 12 than those who wait for results day.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

Maths is the subject here, and it sits underneath several others. These are the subjects we cover for Hartland families, with a note on where the maths dependency lies, because fixing one underlying weakness often moves more than one grade.

Mathematics

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

The page subject. Marks concentrate in algebraic manipulation, in multi-step problems where no working appears, and in the required final statement on geometry and trigonometry questions that students stop short of writing.

Additional Mathematics

Single tier

Taken by stronger Extended candidates in some corridor schools as a bridge to A Level or Higher Level maths. Students who struggle almost always have an unresolved Extended gap rather than an Additional Mathematics one.

Physics

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

The clearest maths dependency. Equation rearrangement, standard form and unit conversion cost Physics marks independently of physics understanding, so a maths block can reasonably be charged against two grades.

Chemistry

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Moles, concentration and percentage yield are ratio and proportion problems in chemical dress. A student slow with proportion is slow in every chemistry calculation, and slowness costs marks even when the method is right.

Biology

Core, Extended, Foundation, Higher

Lighter on calculation and heavy on data interpretation, graph reading and magnification arithmetic. Students who chose Biology to avoid maths meet it in the data questions regardless.

Economics

Core and Extended

Percentage change, index numbers and graph reading carry the quantitative marks, and the evaluation marks are verbal. A numerate student does well here once the arithmetic is automatic rather than effortful.

Business Studies

Core and Extended

Break-even, ratio and cash-flow work are the numerical core, and application to the given case study is where the analysis marks sit. The maths itself is modest and the precision expected is not.

Computer Science

Core and Extended

Number bases, logic and algorithm tracing overlap with the problem-solving habits Extended maths rewards. Thinner coverage in this market, so book earlier than you expect to need to.

ICT

Core and Extended

Spreadsheet formula work is formally assessed and overlaps directly with the arithmetic in maths. A student comfortable in one is usually quick in the other, which makes it an efficient pairing.

Statistics

Single tier where offered

Offered at some centres as a separate qualification. It rewards the same data-handling skills as the statistics topics in the main maths specification, so sessions can be shared rather than duplicated.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

The same subject viewed by awarding body, since the code determines the content list and the paper structure. Ask the examinations officer for it before booking anything.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Under the syllabus in use from 2025, each tier pairs a non-calculator paper with a calculator paper at 50% each. Extended content extends to functions and introductory differentiation. Core cannot reach the highest grades.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1

Foundation and Higher

Two papers of two hours at 50% each with a calculator permitted throughout. Higher content includes differentiation, transformation of functions, three-dimensional trigonometry and vectors.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics B 4MB1

Single tier

A separate specification used at some centres with a different paper structure from Specification A. Confirm which your school enters, because they are not interchangeable in content or format.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Single tier

A distinct qualification with calculus, trigonometric identities and functions. Sat alongside 0580 Extended at some schools and a genuine step up in abstraction rather than more of the same.

Oxford AQA International GCSE Mathematics

Varies

In use at some Dubai centres and the body most often assumed away. Paper structure and content list differ, so a tutor must confirm the specification rather than inferring it from the subject name.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, grade reporting

Core and Extended

Grade ranges differ by tier and have changed with syllabus revisions, so confirm the current scale with the school or the board rather than relying on what an older sibling sat.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one-to-one and online, distinguished by what they are built to fix. The free trial lesson establishes which applies rather than an enquiry form guessing at it.

Algebra foundation block

Six to ten weekly sessions on algebraic manipulation alone, which is the most common underlying problem in IGCSE maths and the one least often named. The work is deliberately repetitive: expanding, factorising, rearranging and solving, to the point where it becomes automatic rather than effortful. Speed matters because the papers are timed, and speed only comes from volume.

  • Algebraic manipulation only, until it is automatic rather than careful
  • Short daily practice set between sessions and marked before the next
  • Benchmarked by timing the same question type across weeks
  • Usually the right first block for a student drifting from a 6 to a 5

Paper-technique weekly

One session a week aimed at how marks are awarded rather than at content. Working shown, method marks protected, final statements written, units and significant figures retained. This is the block for a student who understands the mathematics and scores below what they know, which is a surprisingly large share of the Hartland students we see.

  • Built around the mark scheme rather than the textbook
  • Past-paper questions from the correct specification only
  • Marked against published criteria so losses are visible to the student
  • Reviewed each half-term against whether the paper marks have moved

Pre-series intensive

Two or three sessions a week for six to ten weeks before the June or November series, built from the student's own mock papers. Topic order comes from the marked paper, and some topics are set aside explicitly because the window is short. Whole papers are sat under timed conditions in the structure the student's own specification uses.

  • First session spent marking the mock question by question
  • Whole papers under timed conditions in the right paper format
  • An explicit, agreed list of topics not being revised
  • Fixed end date with no renewal after the series

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sobha Hartland

01

Topic by topic: what the two main specifications actually demand

This is the section a tutor should be able to discuss without notes, and it is the most practical test of whether they have taught the paper. The two main IGCSE maths specifications in Dubai share most of their content and diverge at the top of each tier, which is exactly where the grades being fought over are decided. A tutor who has taught one and assumes the other matches will be right about number and wrong about the parts that separate a 7 from an 8.

Both cover number, algebra and graphs, coordinate geometry, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, probability and statistics, with sets and Venn diagram work appearing in the higher tiers. The upper tiers of both now reach introductory calculus: Cambridge's Extended content extends to functions and differentiation, and Pearson's Higher tier includes differentiation along with transformation of functions, three-dimensional trigonometry and vectors. The emphasis differs, the question styles differ, and the formulae provided in the examination differ, which is why practice has to come from the right paper.

The table sets out the comparison as it stands, with one caveat stated plainly: specifications are revised, and a page is a reason to check rather than a substitute for checking. Confirm the current content list with the school or on the awarding body's own site before building a revision programme around it, and never rely on an older sibling's experience, because a sibling two years ahead may have sat a different syllabus version of the same qualification.

The non-calculator paper, and what it actually exposes

  • Fractions and percentages done without hesitation, not merely correctly
  • Index and surd manipulation where the tier includes it
  • Carrying exact values through several steps before approximating
  • Mental estimation used to check an answer is plausible
  • Timed benchmarks on the same question types across weeks
  • Practice set every session, not as an occasional exercise

Where a specification includes a paper taken without a calculator, it changes the nature of the whole course, and this is the single most common place a tutor prepared for the other board goes wrong. A non-calculator paper does not test different mathematics. It tests the same mathematics at a speed and accuracy that only comes from automatic arithmetic, and it punishes a student whose every multiplication is a small project.

What it exposes, in practice, is fractions, percentages, index work, surd manipulation where the tier includes it, and the ability to carry a calculation through several steps without writing down a decimal approximation too early. Students who have done all their practice with a calculator in hand have usually never discovered that they cannot do these quickly, because the calculator has been quietly covering for them for three years. The discovery, when it comes, tends to be in a mock.

The remedy is unglamorous and reliable. Short, frequent practice, every session, on arithmetic and algebraic manipulation without a calculator, measured by timing the same question types across weeks so the improvement is visible to the student rather than asserted by the tutor. It is the work students resist most and the work that moves a grade most dependably at this level. If your child's specification includes such a paper and their tutor has never set non-calculator practice, that is a specification mismatch rather than a style preference, and it is worth raising directly rather than hoping it corrects itself nearer the examination.

03

Mark-scheme mechanics: why right answers score badly

A maths mark scheme does not simply check the answer, and understanding how it does work is the cheapest insight available to a parent. Marks come in three kinds. Method marks, written M in the scheme, are awarded for a correct approach even when the arithmetic goes wrong afterwards. Accuracy marks, written A, are awarded for a correct value and usually depend on the method mark being earned first. Independent marks, written B, are awarded for a correct statement or value on its own.

This structure explains the single most common complaint we hear from Hartland parents, which is that a child got the right answers and a disappointing mark. A student who works mentally and writes only a final value has no method shown, so on a four-mark question they can score one mark for a correct answer and forfeit three, or in some schemes score nothing if the answer is wrong despite the approach having been sound. Conversely a student who shows a correct method and slips in the arithmetic keeps most of the marks.

The practical consequence is a teachable habit rather than a knowledge gain, which makes it fast and cheap to fix. Write the method. Write the substitution. Write the required final statement in geometry and trigonometry questions. Keep units. Do not round until the end. Any tutor who has taught the paper will talk in these terms within the first lesson, and a parent can check their own child's marked script against the table below without understanding the mathematics at all.

04

Tier ceilings: the decision that sets the grade range

A tier entry determines the grades available to a student, which makes it a more consequential decision than any amount of tutoring. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics runs Core and Extended as separate entries; Pearson Edexcel Specification A runs Foundation and Higher on the same principle. The lower tier cannot reach the top grades however well a student performs, and the higher tier can produce a low grade if a student cannot access the harder half of the paper.

Schools make the decision from class performance, usually in Year 10, and are right in most cases. The exceptions are predictable. A student capped by a weak Year 9 who has since improved may be sitting a paper with a ceiling below their ability. A student promoted on effort rather than on algebraic security may spend two years unable to answer a third of each paper. Both situations are visible in a single marked script to anyone who knows what to look for, and neither is a tutoring problem.

This is why a tier review is the best possible use of a first session for a Year 10 student in Sobha Hartland. It either confirms the school's judgement, which is worth knowing, or gives you specific evidence for a conversation with the maths department while a change is still administratively possible. Entry decisions and their deadlines belong to the school, so raise it early: the same conversation in Year 11 is usually a conversation about a resit instead.

Online against a nearby tutor, for a maths-only problem

Maths is the best-covered subject in the Dubai tutoring market, which means a Hartland family genuinely has a choice here rather than taking what is available. That makes the comparison worth doing properly, on the variables that matter for a single-subject problem rather than on general preference.

On specification matching, online wins because the pool is the whole market and the code can be honoured rather than approximated. On accountability, online tends to win because marked practice and written feedback exist as documents a parent can inspect, while verbal comments at a kitchen table do not. On cost, online wins by the travel premium: in-home one-to-one in Dubai runs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour because travel is inside the figure, against about AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. Those are other providers' published figures, read in October 2026.

On non-calculator drill, which this page argues is central, the formats are equal in principle and online is easier in practice, because short timed exercises are simple to set, submit and mark remotely. The one variable where a nearby tutor has a real claim is supervision: a fourteen-year-old who will not practise unless someone is physically present is a genuine category, and for that family a local arrangement is the right answer. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so we will say so rather than argue the point away, and a family in that position should look locally with this page's rate bands in hand.

June, November and the resit question

UAE candidates sit the June series and the November series. The February and March series that appears in some online revision material is offered to India only, so it has no place in a Dubai student's plan, and material quoting it should make you doubt the rest of the document. November functions as the resit route inside the same academic year for both main awarding bodies, which is useful to know before results day rather than after it.

Read the published record backwards and the resit question turns into a number of weeks rather than a vague option. For Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026. The November 2026 final timetable then ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and results from that series arrive in January, as November 2025 results did when they reached students on 22 January 2026. A Sobha Hartland family tracing that sequence has barely ten weeks between a disappointing August grade and the first November maths paper, and most of those weeks fall inside the opening term of Year 12 alongside new work. Those are past dates, cited so you can see the shape of the cycle rather than so you can act on them.

For anything ahead, open the awarding body's live timetable rather than a restatement, including this page's. Pearson publishes provisional timetables and revises them. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. Ask the school which zone your centre sits in, and use the timetable they issue rather than one found online.

KHDA, the Hartland schools and the post-16 threshold

Dubai's private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Annual inspection runs on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, published school by school, and the secondary mathematics commentary inside a report is a free second opinion on whether a weak grade reflects the student or the department.

Scale explains why tutoring quality varies so widely. Dubai's private sector served 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools creating 16,846 new places; six new schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6%. A market that large, using several awarding bodies, produces a tutoring supply in which nothing visibly distinguishes a specification-literate teacher from a confident generalist unless a parent asks. Separately, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year.

The grade's later use deserves one clear statement. For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, a student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among those five, alongside one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. One ranking competitor publishes a six-subject requirement, which is incorrect. Equivalency is a process the ministry performs, so verify your own case through its attestation channel rather than through any tutoring service. On credentials, plainly: IB Gram is not KHDA approved, ADEK approved or accredited by Cambridge, Pearson or Oxford AQA, and does not claim to be.

What we will not supply, and getting started from Sobha Hartland

Two things are not available from us at any price. The first is assessed work. IGCSE maths has no coursework component in the main specifications, which removes most of the temptation, but at least one operator ranking for UAE curriculum queries sells completed assessed work in other subjects at a published price, and the students buying it are the same students. Submitting work that is not your own is malpractice and the consequence falls on the student rather than the seller.

The second is examination material. We do not reproduce or distribute Cambridge, Pearson or Oxford AQA syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, and we do not host them for download. We reference them and link to the awarding body's own page. That is the lawful position and the more useful one, because the official version is the current version, while a stale document circulating in a parents' group is a reliable way to revise content that has been withdrawn.

To start, send the awarding body and specification code from the examinations officer, the tier, the latest grade labelled as mock or classwork, and a photograph of one marked paper. The script is worth more than any description, because it shows whether the losses are method marks, arithmetic speed or inaccessible content. We then propose a tutor and run a free trial lesson. Ask them to name the specification before you tell them, ask what an M mark is, and ask afterwards for a written account of where the marks are going. If any of those answers is vague, do not book, with us or anyone else.

Where we tutor

Sobha Hartland and the communities sharing its maths departments

Hartland sits among central communities whose schools overlap, and whose maths departments use different awarding bodies. These notes focus on what each community contributes to the practical picture.

Sobha Hartland

Two schools inside the community, so a proportion of students walk home and an early session is possible. The specifications taught in those two schools are not necessarily the same, which is the local version of this page's argument.

Meydan

Shares schools with Hartland and competes for the same evening tutoring slots. A tutor recommended by a Meydan neighbour may know a different specification from the one your child is entered for.

Nad Al Sheba

Established schools a short drive south and one of the few nearby communities where teaching staff actually live, which is why evening arrangements with practising teachers surface from here.

Business Bay

Towers with frequent mid-year arrivals, so Year 10 and 11 transfers are common. A transfer between schools can also mean a transfer between awarding bodies, which needs mapping rather than assuming.

Downtown Dubai

Short drives and easy access to tuition centres, which usually teach one awarding body. Worth checking which, before assuming a centre class matches your child's specification.

Al Jaddaf

Several schools nearby and short commutes, so sessions can start soon after the day ends. Agencies list this area heavily because it is straightforward to serve.

Al Quoz

Most of the corridor's tuition centres sit here, and group maths classes are the cheapest format available for a single shared topic across a cohort.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Long internal drives relative to the map, which raises in-home quotes while changing nothing about which specification the tutor has taught.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the specification code and tier in writing

One email to the examinations officer. The code determines the content list, the calculator rules and the paper structure, and the tier determines the grade range. Without both, a tutor is preparing a student for a paper that may not be the one they sit.

  2. 02

Send a photograph of one marked script

It shows what no description can: whether marks are going on method, on arithmetic speed, or on content the student cannot access. Method losses are fast to fix, speed takes a term, and inaccessible content may be a tier question rather than a teaching one.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, then three questions

Ask the tutor to name the awarding body before you tell them, ask what an M mark is and how it is lost, and ask for a written account of where your child's marks are going. Vague answers are a reason not to book at any rate.

  4. 04

Review the tier in the first fortnight

A tier entry caps the grade for two years and is occasionally wrong in a way visible in one script. We raise it early so you have evidence for a conversation with the department while a change is still administratively possible.

Non-calculator practice every session, where the board tests it

Short, frequent, timed, and benchmarked across weeks so improvement is visible to the student. It is the work students resist most and the work that moves a grade most reliably where the specification includes such a paper.

Review against the series, and stop when done

The plan is checked against the June or November series, and the block ends when its purpose is met. If the real problem turns out to be the tier rather than the teaching, we will say so even though it ends the arrangement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The content, not reassurance

We publish what each specification actually demands topic by topic, including where the two main boards diverge at the top of each tier. That is the ground a tutor should be able to discuss without notes, and it is how you test the claim rather than accept it.

Mark-scheme mechanics explained

Method, accuracy and independent marks, and the habits that protect each. It answers the commonest complaint we hear, which is that a child got the right answers and a disappointing mark, and it lets a parent read a script without doing the maths.

The non-calculator paper taken seriously

Where a specification includes one, it changes the whole course, and we set short timed practice every session with benchmarks across weeks. A tutor who never sets it has prepared for a different board.

Tier reviewed early, not in Year 11

A tier entry caps the grade for two years. We look at it in the first fortnight and tell you plainly if the problem is placement rather than teaching, even though saying so ends the arrangement.

AED figures with named sources

The rates on this page carry the provider that published each one and the month we read it. They are market context, not our price list, which follows a free trial lesson and an honest count of what is needed.

No borrowed credentials and no leaked papers

We explain what KHDA and MoHRE do and link to their own material, and we do not reproduce or host syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes. We reference them and link to the awarding body, so what you get is the current version.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sobha Hartland: your questions answered

How do I tell whether a maths tutor knows my child's specification or just maths?+

Three questions settle it in a first conversation. Ask them to name the awarding body and code before you tell them. Ask whether a calculator is permitted in each paper on that specification, because the answer differs between the two main boards and changes the whole drill. And ask what an M mark is and how a student loses one. A tutor who answers all three has taught this examination. A tutor who talks about enjoying maths and building confidence may be pleasant and has not answered the question.

Why did my child get the right answers and still lose marks?+

Because mark schemes award method separately from accuracy. Method marks, written M, are earned by a correct approach that is written down, and on a four-mark question a student who works mentally and records only a final value can forfeit three of them even when the value is right. Accuracy marks usually depend on the method mark being earned first. The fix is a habit rather than knowledge: write the method, write the substitution, write the required final statement, keep units, and round only at the end.

Does the content actually differ between Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE maths?+

Most of it is shared and the divergence sits at the top of each tier, which is exactly where contested grades are decided. Both cover number, algebra and graphs, coordinate geometry, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, probability and statistics. Cambridge's Extended content extends to functions and introductory differentiation; Pearson's Higher tier includes differentiation, transformation of functions, three-dimensional trigonometry and vectors. Question styles and the formulae provided also differ, which is why practice has to come from the student's own specification rather than from whatever is to hand.

My child has never practised maths without a calculator. Is that a problem?+

It is, if their specification includes a paper taken without one. A non-calculator paper tests the same mathematics at a speed only automatic arithmetic allows, and a student whose every multiplication is a small project runs out of time while understanding everything. The exposure is usually fractions, percentages, index work and carrying exact values through several steps. The remedy is short, frequent timed practice every session, benchmarked across weeks. It is the work students resist most and the work that moves a grade most reliably.

Can my child's tier be changed if it looks wrong?+

Entry decisions and their deadlines belong to the school, so it depends on when you raise it. A tier caps the grade range available regardless of performance, and misplacement is visible in one marked script: a capped student who is answering everything correctly, or a promoted student who cannot attempt a third of the paper. Raise it in Year 10 with the script as evidence and a change may be possible. The same conversation in Year 11 is usually a conversation about a November resit instead.

Is Additional Mathematics worth taking alongside IGCSE maths?+

For a secure Extended or Higher tier student heading to A Level Mathematics or IB Higher Level, it is useful preparation because it introduces calculus, trigonometric identities and function work at a level the main specification does not reach. For a student who is still shaky on Extended algebra it is a mistake, because the difficulty they will meet in Additional Mathematics is almost always an unresolved Extended gap wearing a harder name. Secure the main specification first and the decision answers itself.

What should we use as the exam timetable?+

Only the one the school issues. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and its guidance states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, warning that Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong zone timetable. A timetable found online may belong to another zone entirely. Ask the examinations officer which zone your centre is in, and for future series open the awarding body's live timetable rather than any restatement of it.

Can my child resit IGCSE maths in November?+

Yes, for both main awarding bodies November functions as a resit route inside the same academic year, which is worth knowing before results day rather than after. The pattern is visible in the published record: Pearson's November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Entry goes through the school's examinations officer shortly after summer results, and the preparation window is roughly eight to ten weeks, which is enough if the script is used to target it.

How many sessions does an algebra problem take to fix?+

Six to ten weekly sessions, in most cases, because fluency is built by frequency rather than by intensity. The work is deliberately repetitive: expanding, factorising, rearranging and solving, until it becomes automatic rather than careful. Progress should be benchmarked by timing the same question types across weeks so the student can see it rather than being told about it. A method-marks problem is faster, often a half-term. Content the student genuinely cannot access is slower and may be a tier question instead.

Does it matter that the tutor is not in Sobha Hartland?+

For maths it matters very little, and maths is the best-covered subject in this market so you have a genuine choice. What matters is whether the tutor has taught your child's specification, whether they set non-calculator practice where the board tests it, and whether you can inspect marked scripts afterwards. Online delivery lets the match be made on those grounds rather than on who will drive here through 4pm traffic. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes at all; that is an India-only service.

Is a group maths class good enough for IGCSE?+

For a named topic shared by the group, often yes, and it is the cheapest format available near Hartland. For a method-marks habit, no, because an individual habit will not be noticed in a room of six and that is precisely the kind of loss that costs most. Note also that a centre usually teaches one awarding body, so check that it matches your child's entry before assuming the practice is relevant. The test is whether you can name the gap: if you can, a group class may be efficient.

What grade does my child need in IGCSE maths for A Level or IB Higher Level?+

Schools set their own thresholds, commonly a 7 or equivalent, so ask your child's school directly rather than relying on a general figure. More useful than the threshold is the distinction between meeting it and being ready: both A Level Mathematics and IB Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level assume algebraic fluency that a borderline grade does not demonstrate. A Year 11 block aimed at algebra specifically, rather than at general revision, is better preparation than scraping the threshold and hoping.

Will you give us past papers and mark schemes to work through?+

We do not reproduce, distribute or host awarding-body syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables. We reference them and link to the board's own page, which is both the lawful position and the more useful one, because the official version is the current one while a stale PDF circulating in a parents' group is a common route to revising withdrawn content. Tutors set practice from material they can legitimately access and mark it against the published criteria, which is the part that produces the improvement anyway.

How quickly can you find an IGCSE maths tutor for us?+

Usually days, and sometimes the same day if you send the specification code with a photograph of a marked script. Maths is the best-covered subject in the market, so the constraint is normally the slot rather than the subject: the early-evening Gulf Standard Time hours Hartland families want after the school run fill first, and the better tutors are largely committed by October. Oxford AQA specifications and Specification B take longer, because fewer tutors have taught them, and we will say so rather than improvising.

Can sessions move during Ramadan, mocks or travel?+

Yes, and online delivery makes it routine rather than a favour. During Ramadan sessions commonly shift to a post-Iftar slot, with no journey to renegotiate at either end. In mock weeks a session can pause or redirect to whatever the mock has just exposed, which is often the most productive single session of the year. When a family travels the lesson follows the student. Agree which time zone the session is pinned to if you are leaving the Gulf, and give notice so the slot is held.

What is the one thing to send that helps most?+

A photograph of one marked script, with the awarding body, code and tier written alongside it. It tells us what no description can. Correct answers with no working point to method marks. Slow, hesitant early arithmetic points to non-calculator fluency. Blank questions in the second half of the paper point to content the student cannot access, which may be a tier matter rather than a teaching one. With that one image we can usually propose a tutor the same day.

Test the specification knowledge before you book the hours

Plenty of people near Sobha Hartland can do IGCSE maths. Fewer know the paper your child will sit, how its mark scheme awards credit, and whether their specification tests arithmetic without a calculator. Those are checkable in one conversation, and the questions are on this page. Send the awarding body, the code, the tier and a photograph of one marked script, and we will propose a tutor and run the first session free. Then ask what an M mark is, and judge the written diagnosis you get afterwards.
