IB MYP Tutor in Sobha Hartland

Finding an IB MYP tutor in Sobha Hartland is harder than finding a Diploma tutor, and for a reason worth understanding: MYP is marked against four criteria per subject rather than through examinations, and most tutors have never read a criterion descriptor. This page sets out the criteria by letter for each subject group, explains how criterion marks become a 1 to 7 grade, and gives the tests that reveal whether a tutor has taught it. Lessons are one-to-one and online.

  • Criteria A to D published for each MYP subject group
  • How four marks out of 8 convert into a 1 to 7 grade, explained
  • Personal Project boundaries stated to the student in session one

IB & IGCSE in Sobha Hartland

MYP is not examined, which is why so few tutors can teach it

The honest answer to whether anyone nearby knows this programme is that fewer people do than for any other curriculum in Dubai, and the reason is structural rather than geographical. MYP has no external examination papers in most subjects and no past papers to work through. Instead each subject is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, each marked out of 8, with descriptors written in language that a student has usually never been shown and a tutor has usually never read.

That makes MYP tutoring a different job from Diploma or IGCSE tutoring. A tutor who can teach the content of MYP Sciences to a competent standard may be entirely unable to explain why a student's investigation scored 4 out of 8 on criterion B rather than 6, which is the only question that matters to the grade. A parent who asks a prospective tutor what criterion C rewards in their child's subject will know within ten seconds whether the conversation is worth continuing.

There is a second reason the supply is thin. MYP is taught by IB continuum schools, which are a minority of Dubai's private sector: the International Baccalaureate accounted for 7 per cent of private-school enrolment in the emirate in 2024-25, against 37 per cent for the UK curriculum. Sobha Hartland is better served than most communities, with IB provision inside it and more a short drive away, but the number of teachers who have actually marked MYP work to criteria and live within a twenty-minute drive is small.

So rather than claim a local specialist, this page gives you the substance. It publishes the four criteria for each MYP subject group, because almost no competitor page in this market names a single one. It explains how four marks out of 8 are converted into the 1 to 7 grade that appears on a report, which is the piece parents most often misunderstand. It sets out the Personal Project boundary plainly, and it maps the MYP-to-Diploma gap subject by subject, because that transition is where most Hartland families first ask for help.

IB Gram delivers MYP tuition to Sobha Hartland as one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time, matched to the subject group rather than to the postcode. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Lessons work from the criterion descriptors the school is using and from the student's own marked task sheets, because in a programme with no past papers the student's own work is the only legitimate evidence available.

Nothing on this page promises a grade. What it offers is the vocabulary to have a precise conversation with your child's teacher and with any tutor you are considering, which in a programme this widely misunderstood is worth more than a promise. A parent who can name the criterion their child is losing marks on has already done the hard part of the diagnosis.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP spans five years and its demands change substantially across them. These three stages carry different answers to the question of what tutoring should do, and conflating them is the commonest error in this part of the market.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Middle Years Programme, early years

The years where criterion language is introduced and where most students never quite learn it. Tasks are shorter, the content load is manageable, and the useful work is teaching a student to read the descriptor before starting rather than writing something and hoping. A student who learns in MYP 2 what criterion A actually asks for carries that into every subsequent task in every subject group.

In the central corridor these are also the years when families transfer between schools and sometimes between curricula, arriving from British, American or Indian systems where criterion assessment does not exist. Those students are not behind on content; they are unfamiliar with how they are being judged, which is a quick and specific thing to fix.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Middle Years Programme, final years

The years that carry the Personal Project and the decisions about what follows. Tasks lengthen, criterion D in several subjects begins to demand genuine evaluation rather than description, and students who have coasted on content knowledge start to plateau. This is also when the Diploma or A Level choice is made, so readiness for Higher Level subjects becomes a live question rather than a distant one.

Schools near Sobha Hartland offer both the IB Diploma and A Levels after MYP, so the final MYP years are a decision point rather than a formality. One session testing readiness for a particular Higher Level subject is the highest-value tutoring a Hartland family buys at this stage.

eAssessmentAges 15-16 · Year 11

MYP eAssessment and the MYP Certificate

Some schools enter students for the IB's optional MYP eAssessment, which combines on-screen examinations and ePortfolios and leads to the MYP Certificate. Where it applies, preparation differs from ordinary coursework because the on-screen format and timing are unfamiliar. Where it does not apply, the school's internal criterion assessment stands alone, and a tutor needs to know which situation a student is in.

Whether a school enters for eAssessment varies school by school and sometimes year by year, so it must be confirmed with the MYP coordinator rather than assumed from the fact that a school runs MYP. We ask the question before proposing a tutor, because the two situations need different preparation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP has eight subject groups and each has its own four criteria. These are the groups we cover for Sobha Hartland families, with the criterion that most often costs marks in each, because that is the level at which useful tutoring operates.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Marks are most often lost on investigating patterns, where students find a rule and never justify or generalise it, and on communicating, where notation is informal.

Sciences

MYP 1-5, integrated and discrete

Criteria are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Processing and evaluating is the usual weak point: data presented without uncertainty, and evaluation that restates the method instead of criticising it.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria are analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students lose marks on analysing by describing what happens rather than how meaning is constructed, which is the same habit that limits Diploma English grades two years later.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Criteria cover comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating, and using language. Phase placement matters more than year group, and a student in the wrong phase will look weak while being correctly placed, or vice versa.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria are knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is where most of the contested marks sit, and it rewards weighing sources and perspectives rather than assembling more information.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria are inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Students frequently build something competent and lose marks because the inquiry and the testing against their own specification were thin.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Criteria are investigating, developing, creating or performing, and evaluating. The process journal does much of the work here, and students who document after the fact rather than during lose marks they have genuinely earned in practice.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The written and reflective components surprise students who expected a practical subject to be assessed practically.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed separately with their own criteria, and frequently the lowest grade on a report because nobody has explained what is being asked. Usually a one-session fix once the student sees that integration itself is what is being marked.

Personal Project

MYP 5

The culminating independent piece, assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal and a report. Our support is process coaching only: the goal, the product and the writing are entirely the student's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one-to-one and online, built around the criteria rather than around a syllabus. Which one applies depends on whether the problem is a criterion, a transition or the Personal Project.

Criterion-focused weekly

One session a week aimed at one named criterion in one subject group. The tutor reads the descriptor with the student, looks at the student's last marked task, and works specifically on what moves a 4 out of 8 towards a 6. Because MYP has no past papers, the material is the student's own work and the school's own task sheets, used with the student's teacher's marking visible.

  • One named criterion in one subject group, agreed at the start
  • Descriptor read with the student rather than summarised for them
  • Work drafted and redrafted against that descriptor between sessions
  • Reviewed against the next school task rather than against our own

Transition block, MYP into Diploma or A Level

Four to six sessions in MYP 5 aimed at readiness for a particular post-16 subject. For a student heading to Higher Level sciences or mathematics, this means examination-style questions, timed work and algebraic speed, none of which MYP tests. It is the most useful block a Hartland family buys at this stage because it either confirms a choice or prevents an expensive misplacement.

  • Aimed at one named post-16 subject and level
  • Examination-format questions, timed, which MYP does not use
  • Written verdict on readiness that you can take to the school
  • Four to six sessions, bounded, with no automatic continuation

Personal Project process coaching

Three to four sessions around the Personal Project, strictly limited to process. The tutor explains the criteria, questions a goal until it is achievable and specific, and discusses how a process journal should be used as evidence rather than written up afterwards. The student chooses the goal, makes the product and writes the report, and we say that to them in the first session.

  • Goal questioned until it is specific and achievable
  • Process journal explained as contemporaneous evidence
  • Criteria explained in the language the school is using
  • No contribution to the goal, the product or the report

01

The four criteria, by letter, for every MYP subject group

This is the content no competitor page in this market publishes. Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria labelled A to D, each marked out of 8, and the criteria differ by subject group. A student does not have a general MYP ability. They have a profile across sixteen or more criteria spread over eight subject groups, and a report showing a 5 in Sciences and a 5 in Individuals and Societies can describe two completely different problems.

The table sets them out. What becomes obvious reading down it is how much of MYP assessment is about process rather than recall. Knowing and understanding appears as one criterion of four in several groups, which means content knowledge accounts for roughly a quarter of the grade in those subjects. The rest rewards inquiry, communication, evaluation and critical thinking, which are teachable skills that most students are never explicitly taught and most tutors never explicitly address.

Use it as a diagnostic tool. Ask your child which criterion their last task scored lowest on, in which subject. If they do not know, that is itself the finding, and the first session should be spent reading the descriptor with them. One caution: schools interpret task design differently within the programme and the IB revises subject guides periodically, so confirm the current criteria and the school's own task expectations with the MYP coordinator rather than relying on this or any other page.

One further point about reading the table. The criteria are not weighted equally in every reporting cycle, because an individual task may assess only two of the four, and schools combine marks across tasks in their own way within the programme's requirements. That is another reason to ask the school for the breakdown rather than inferring it, and a good reason to ask a prospective tutor how they would find out.

How four marks out of 8 become a grade from 1 to 7

This is the piece parents most often misunderstand, and understanding it changes how a report is read. Each of the four criteria is marked out of 8, giving a possible total of 32 for a subject. That total is then converted into the reported grade from 1 to 7 using published grade boundaries, which means the relationship between criterion marks and the final grade is not proportional and not linear.

The practical consequence is that one weak criterion can hold a grade down disproportionately. A student scoring 7, 7, 7 and 3 has a strong profile with a single specific problem, and the arithmetic treats them considerably worse than their classwork suggests. That is encouraging news rather than discouraging, because a single weak criterion is the most tractable thing in the whole programme: it is one skill, named, with a descriptor explaining exactly what a higher mark requires.

It also explains why generic MYP tutoring achieves so little. Working broadly across a subject spreads effort across four criteria, three of which may already be strong. Working on the one criterion that is weak moves the total by the most marks for the fewest hours. Ask the school for the criterion breakdown behind a reported grade rather than the grade alone; most schools record it and many report it, and it is the single most useful document in a Hartland family's possession.

One caveat on boundaries. The conversion from a total out of 32 to a grade from 1 to 7 is set by published grade boundaries that the IB defines for the programme, and schools apply them when reporting. They are not something a tutor should be guessing at, and a tutor who claims to know precisely what total produces a 6 without reference to the published boundaries is overstating what anyone can know from outside the school.

03

The Personal Project, and the line a tutor must not cross

The Personal Project is the culminating independent piece of MYP 5, assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal and a report as evidence. It is also where tutoring is most likely to go wrong, because a student under deadline pressure with a half-finished product and an empty journal is exactly the customer an essay mill is looking for. At least one operator ranking for UAE IB queries sells completed assessed work outright, and the consequence of submitting it falls on the student.

What a tutor legitimately does is process coaching and nothing else. They may explain the criteria in the language the school is using. They may question a goal until it is specific and achievable within the time available, which is the single most valuable intervention because an over-ambitious goal is the usual cause of a poor project. They may explain that a process journal is contemporaneous evidence rather than something written up at the end, and they may teach a skill the project depends on.

What a tutor may not do is choose the goal, make or contribute to the product, supply content for the report, write or edit the report, or fabricate journal entries. We say all of that to the student directly in the first session, because a fifteen-year-old deserves the boundary before they are standing on it rather than afterwards. The same applies to any interdisciplinary unit or extended task, and we do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides or assessment materials; we reference them and point to the school's own copies.

04

The MYP-to-Diploma gap, subject by subject

This is where most Hartland families first look for a tutor, and it is worth being precise about what the gap actually is. It is not content. MYP students arriving in DP1 generally know enough and sometimes know more than their peers from examination systems. What they have not done is sit timed examination papers, work to mark schemes, or produce answers under the constraint of a command term. Those are the three things that cost them marks in the first DP1 term.

The gap differs by subject in a way that is predictable enough to plan around. In mathematics it is algebraic speed and no-calculator fluency, because MYP rewards investigation and does not test rapid manipulation. In the sciences it is the data-based paper and the discipline of showing calculation steps. In the humanities it is command terms, because MYP criterion language and Diploma command terms are different vocabularies for related ideas. In languages it is timed writing under pressure.

The good news is that each of these responds quickly, because they are procedural rather than conceptual. Four to six sessions in MYP 5 or early DP1, aimed at the specific procedural gap for a named subject, usually closes it. That is a far better purchase than a year of general support, and it is also the block that tells you whether a Higher Level choice is sound, which is the most expensive decision in the whole transition.

One thing the table cannot capture is attitude. A student who has spent five years being assessed on inquiry and reflection sometimes finds the Diploma's emphasis on timed recall a step backwards, and says so. That is a reasonable reaction and it is also not an argument, because the examination will happen either way. Naming the shift explicitly, as a change in what is being measured rather than a change in what matters, usually gets a student to engage with it faster than encouragement does.

Six questions that reveal whether a tutor has taught MYP

  • Name the four criteria for my child's subject group
  • What is each criterion marked out of, and what is the subject total?
  • How do criterion marks become the 1 to 7 reported grade?
  • What separates a 6 from a 4 on the criterion my child scored lowest on?
  • Does my child's school enter for MYP eAssessment, and what changes if so?
  • What will you and will you not do with the Personal Project?

Because there are no past papers to work through, MYP tutoring is unusually easy to fake and unusually easy to test. A tutor who has taught the programme can discuss criteria without notes; one who has not will talk about the subject instead. These six questions take two minutes and they are the most useful filter available to a Sobha Hartland parent.

Ask which four criteria apply to your child's subject group, by name. Ask what each criterion is marked out of, and what the subject total is. Ask how criterion marks become the 1 to 7 grade on the report. Ask what distinguishes a 6 from a 4 on the specific criterion your child scored lowest on. Ask whether the school enters students for MYP eAssessment, and what difference that makes. And ask what they will and will not do with a Personal Project.

A tutor who answers all six has taught MYP. A tutor who answers none may still be an excellent subject teacher and will be learning the assessment model on your time, which at a Diploma or IGCSE rate is not what you are paying for. Apply the questions to us as readily as to anyone else; we would rather be tested than believed, because in a programme this poorly understood a confident claim costs nothing to make.

One caution on how to use them. These are questions for a first conversation, not a test to spring on a tutor mid-lesson, and a tutor who needs to check a subject guide before answering the fourth one is being careful rather than ignorant. What you are listening for is whether criterion language is their working vocabulary or a translation they have to make, and that distinction is audible almost immediately.

06

Online against a nearby tutor for an MYP student

MYP changes the balance of this comparison in two ways that are worth stating, because the honest answer is less one-sided than it is for a Diploma student. The first is age: an MYP 1 student is eleven, and presence in the room matters more at eleven than at seventeen. The second is scarcity: MYP-literate tutors are thin everywhere in Dubai, which makes the wider pool that online delivery opens up more valuable rather than less.

On matching, online wins decisively, and it is the point of this page. The number of people within a twenty-minute drive of Hartland who have marked MYP work to criteria in your child's subject group is very small, while the number available online is materially larger. On continuity, online wins, because families in this corridor move apartment and school more often than they plan to. On evidence, online tends to win, because drafted work against a descriptor exists as a document a parent can read.

On presence and on supervision of a younger child, a nearby tutor has a genuine advantage and we will not pretend otherwise. Market in-home rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour because travel sits inside the figure, against about AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online; those are other providers' published figures read in October 2026. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all, so for a family who needs someone physically present, a local arrangement is the right route and these bands are what to judge it against.

KHDA, the mandatory UAE subjects and the MYP timetable

Dubai's private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, with annual inspection on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. For an MYP family, the relevant part of a report is the commentary on the middle phase rather than the headline band, since a school strong at primary or Diploma level is not automatically strong in between.

Something that catches families new to Dubai is that the mandatory UAE subjects run alongside MYP, not instead of it. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. It requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ.

The detail matters for scheduling. KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit, allows schools to vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and advises that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least twenty-five minutes. It also requires that school teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach those subjects, which is a credential question for the school rather than for a tutoring service. On our own position, plainly: IB Gram is not KHDA approved, ADEK approved or IB accredited and does not claim to be, since a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a licence issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai.

The practical effect for a Hartland MYP student is a fuller timetable than the programme on paper suggests, with fewer free periods than a parent assumes when planning tutoring. That argues for one well-used weekly session rather than two, and for scheduling it early in the evening while the student is still able to work.

08

Getting started from Sobha Hartland, and what we say when a subject group is thin

Send four things. The subject group and the MYP year. The last reported grade with the criterion breakdown behind it if the school provides one, which is the single most useful document available. The teacher's last written comment, quoted rather than summarised. And the school's own task sheet for the most recent piece of work, because task design varies between schools under the same programme.

We propose a tutor and run a free trial lesson, which is a diagnosis rather than a sales call. Run the six questions from earlier in this page on whoever takes it. Afterwards, ask for a criterion-level account in writing: not that your child should read more, but that the losses sit in criterion C because notation is informal, or in criterion D because the evaluation restates the method. If the answer does not name a criterion, do not book the block.

And the honest part. MYP coverage is thinner than Diploma or IGCSE coverage across the whole market, and within MYP it is thinnest in Design, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Language Acquisition beyond the commonly taught languages. When nobody suitable is free we say so and offer a different slot, a short wait, or a tutor based outside the UAE with genuine MYP experience working to Gulf Standard Time. We will not put a subject teacher with no criterion experience in front of an MYP student and charge a specialist rate for them to learn the model.

Where we tutor

Sobha Hartland and the communities with MYP provision nearby

MYP is taught by IB continuum schools, which are fewer and more concentrated than British-curriculum schools. These notes say where that provision sits relative to Hartland and what it means practically.

Sobha Hartland

IB provision inside the community, so some MYP students are home before three without a car journey. That makes an early session realistic, which matters more for an eleven-year-old than for a Diploma student.

Meydan

Shares schools with Hartland, so MYP families here face the same criterion questions and often the same teachers. Recommendations circulate fast, which is useful for reliability and silent about subject group.

Nad Al Sheba

Established IB continuum provision a short drive south, and one of the few nearby communities where MYP teachers actually live, because the schools employing them are here.

Al Jaddaf

Home to IB continuum provision close to the creek crossings. Useful context for Hartland families, since this is where several of the corridor's MYP cohorts actually sit.

Business Bay

Towers with frequent mid-year arrivals, many from systems with no criterion assessment at all. Those students need the assessment model explained rather than the content retaught.

Downtown Dubai

Short drives to several schools, though the tuition centres here overwhelmingly serve British and Indian curricula rather than MYP, which limits the group-class alternative.

Al Quoz

The corridor's tuition-centre district, and worth knowing as the place where MYP provision is least available, because centres build around examination syllabuses.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Large plots between Meydan and Al Quoz with families drawn to IB provision nearby. Long internal drives push in-home quotes up without changing anyone's criterion knowledge.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject group, the year and the criterion breakdown

MYP has eight subject groups with different criteria, so the group matters more than the subject name. If the school provides the criterion marks behind a reported grade, send them: they turn a vague worry into a named target in one step.

  2. 02

Include the school's own task sheet

Task design varies between schools under the same programme, so the sheet your child was actually given is better evidence than any general description of MYP. It also shows which criteria that particular task was assessing, which is rarely all four.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, then the six questions

The first session costs nothing. Ask the tutor to name the four criteria for the subject group, what each is marked out of, and what separates a 6 from a 4 on the weakest one. A tutor who cannot will be learning the model on your time.

  4. 04

Target one criterion, not the subject

Working broadly spreads effort across four criteria, three of which may already be strong. Working on the weak one moves the total by the most marks for the fewest hours, which is why we ask for the breakdown before recommending anything.

  5. 05

    Draft, redraft, against the descriptor

Because MYP has no past papers, the work between sessions is the student's own drafting measured against the descriptor rather than past-paper questions. The student reads the descriptor themselves; we do not summarise it for them.

  6. 06

Review against the next school task

Progress is judged on the next piece of marked school work, not on our impression of the sessions. If the criterion mark has not moved after two tasks, the plan changes rather than continuing.

Almost no page in this market names a single MYP criterion. We publish all four for each of the eight subject groups, because that is the level at which MYP grades are actually decided and the level at which a tutor's knowledge can be tested.

The grade conversion explained

Four criteria out of 8 give a total out of 32, converted to a 1 to 7 grade by published boundaries. That is why one weak criterion holds a grade down disproportionately, and why it is also the most tractable problem in the programme.

Six questions instead of a claim

Rather than assert criterion literacy, we give you the questions that test it in two minutes, including what separates a 6 from a 4 on a named criterion. Apply them to us as readily as to anyone else.

The transition gap mapped by subject

MYP students arrive in DP1 without timed papers, mark schemes or command terms, and the gap differs by subject in a predictable way. Four to six targeted sessions usually closes it, which is a better purchase than a year of general support.

Personal Project boundaries stated to the student

Process coaching only: the goal, the product, the journal and the report are entirely the student's. We say so to them in the first session rather than in small print, because the pressure arrives later.

Coverage limits disclosed

MYP is thinner across this market than Diploma or IGCSE, and thinnest in Design, Arts, Physical and Health Education and the less common languages. We say so before you book, and we will not have a subject teacher learn the assessment model at your expense.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sobha Hartland: your questions answered

Why is an MYP tutor harder to find than a Diploma or IGCSE one?+

Because MYP has no external examination papers in most subjects and no past papers to work through. Each subject is assessed against four criteria marked out of 8, with descriptors most tutors have never read, so the skill required is criterion literacy rather than examination technique. On top of that, MYP is taught by IB continuum schools, which are a minority of Dubai's private sector, with the International Baccalaureate accounting for 7 per cent of enrolment against 37 per cent for the UK curriculum. The teaching population is simply smaller.

What are the four MYP criteria in my child's subject?+

They differ by subject group. Mathematics uses knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Sciences uses knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Language and Literature uses analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. The full set for all eight groups is in the table on this page. Each criterion is marked out of 8, and subject guides are revised periodically, so confirm the current set with the MYP coordinator.

How does a mark out of 8 turn into the grade on my child's report?+

The four criterion marks, each out of 8, give a subject total out of 32, which is then converted into the reported grade from 1 to 7 using published grade boundaries. The relationship is not proportional, which is why one weak criterion can hold a grade down more than a parent expects. A profile of 7, 7, 7 and 3 totals 24 and describes a strong student with one specific gap. That is encouraging, because a single named criterion is the most tractable thing in the programme.

My child's MYP grade dropped but the teacher says they are doing well. Which is it?+

Often both, and the criterion breakdown resolves it. Different tasks assess different criteria, so a grade can fall because a task weighted towards a weak criterion came round, rather than because performance declined. Ask the school for the criterion marks behind the reported grade rather than the grade alone. If three criteria are strong and one is weak, the teacher's impression and the arithmetic are both accurate, and the fix is a few sessions on the named criterion rather than general subject support.

How much help is a tutor allowed to give on the Personal Project?+

Only with process, and the boundary is specific. A tutor may explain the criteria, question a goal until it is specific and achievable in the time available, explain that a process journal is contemporaneous evidence rather than something written up at the end, and teach a skill the project depends on. A tutor may not choose the goal, make or contribute to the product, supply content, write or edit the report, or fabricate journal entries. We state this to the student in the first session, because the deadline pressure arrives later.

What is the real gap between MYP and the IB Diploma?+

Not content, in most cases. MYP students usually arrive in DP1 knowing enough, and sometimes more than peers from examination systems. What they have not done is sit timed papers, work to a mark scheme, or answer under the constraint of a command term. In mathematics the gap is algebraic speed and no-calculator fluency; in the sciences it is data-based papers and showing calculation steps; in the humanities it is command terms. Each responds to four to six targeted sessions because the gap is procedural rather than conceptual.

Is my child ready for Higher Level sciences after MYP?+

A single session can give you a defensible answer, and it is the most valuable tutoring an MYP 5 family buys. Readiness is not the MYP grade; it is whether the student can handle examination-format questions under time with calculation steps shown, which MYP does not test. We give a written verdict you can take to the school. Getting this wrong is the most expensive decision in the transition, because a student placed above their foundation may need weekly support across both Diploma years just to hold a 4.

Does MYP have exams, and what is eAssessment?+

Most MYP assessment is internal and criterion-based, with no external papers. Some schools additionally enter students for the IB's optional MYP eAssessment, which combines on-screen examinations and ePortfolios and leads to the MYP Certificate. Where it applies, preparation differs because the on-screen format and timing are unfamiliar. Whether a school enters varies school by school and sometimes year by year, so confirm it with the MYP coordinator. We ask the question before proposing a tutor, since the two situations need different work.

My child moved from a British school into MYP. What do they need?+

Usually the assessment model explained rather than the content retaught, which is a quick and specific job. A student arriving from a system without criterion assessment will write something competent and score moderately, because they are answering a question nobody asked. One or two sessions reading the descriptors with them, followed by a redrafted task measured against the descriptor, typically changes the next grade. Mid-year transfers are common in this corridor, so this is one of the more frequent requests we see from Hartland families.

Which MYP subject groups are hardest to find tutors for?+

Design, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Language Acquisition beyond the commonly taught languages, because few tutors have marked those criteria and tuition centres build around examination syllabuses instead. Mathematics, Sciences, Language and Literature, and Individuals and Societies are better covered. We tell you which category your subject group falls into before you book, and when nobody suitable is free we offer a different slot, a short wait, or a tutor outside the UAE with genuine MYP experience, disclosed as such.

Does the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education requirement affect MYP students?+

It does, and families new to Dubai are often surprised. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year, and separate classes are required for Arabs and non-Arabs in several of these subjects. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. The practical effect is a fuller timetable than the programme suggests, which argues for one well-used weekly session rather than two.

What is an interdisciplinary unit and why did my child score badly on it?+

It is a unit assessed across two or more subject groups with its own criteria, and students frequently score below their usual level because nobody has explained that the integration itself is what is being marked. A student who produces good work in each discipline separately, without connecting them, is answering the wrong question. It is usually a one-session fix once they see what is being assessed, and it is worth asking about specifically, because an interdisciplinary mark often sits oddly low on an otherwise consistent report.

Is online tutoring suitable for an eleven or twelve year old?+

It works, with one condition: an adult in the house, not in the room, for the first few sessions, so the student knows help is available if something technical goes wrong. Beyond that, younger students often engage well because a screen-shared document gives them something concrete to work on. The honest counterpoint is that presence matters more at eleven than at seventeen, so if your child genuinely needs someone beside them, a local arrangement is better. We do not send tutors to UAE homes at all.

How many sessions does a single weak criterion take to move?+

Three to five, in most cases, because a criterion is one named skill with a descriptor explaining exactly what a higher mark requires. The work is reading the descriptor, looking at the last marked task, drafting against the descriptor and redrafting. Progress is judged on the next piece of marked school work rather than on our impression of the sessions. If the criterion mark has not moved across two subsequent tasks, the plan changes rather than the block being extended.

Do private tutors in the UAE need a permit for MYP tutoring?+

The permit requirement is about private tutoring generally rather than about any programme. MoHRE issues a private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Applications run through MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service. Those tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published.

What should I send to get the most useful recommendation?+

Four things, and one of them does most of the work. The subject group and MYP year. The criterion breakdown behind the last reported grade, if the school provides it, which turns a vague worry into a named target immediately. The teacher's last written comment, quoted rather than paraphrased. And the school's own task sheet for the most recent piece of work, because task design varies between schools under the same programme and the sheet shows which criteria that task actually assessed.

Ask for the criterion, not the subject

MYP grades are decided criterion by criterion, and a report showing a 5 can describe four completely different problems. The useful first step is not booking hours but finding the criterion: ask the school for the breakdown behind the grade, send it with the subject group, the year and the school's own task sheet, and we will propose a tutor and run the first session free. Then ask the six questions on this page, and judge the criterion-level account you get afterwards rather than the impression of the lesson.
