IGCSE Science Tutor in Jumeirah Golf Estates

The real question behind searching for an IGCSE science tutor in Jumeirah Golf Estates is whether anybody nearby knows which science your child is actually sitting. Triple award, coordinated double award and single award are different qualifications with different papers. This page answers it properly. IB Gram teaches Jumeirah Golf Estates students one-to-one over live video and sends no tutors to UAE addresses.

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Golf Estates

"Science" is not a subject, and that is where the trouble starts

Parents in Jumeirah Golf Estates ring asking for a science tutor, and the first thing worth establishing is that no such qualification exists. Your child is sitting one of several genuinely different things. Three separate awards in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Or Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, a double award covering all three disciplines at Extended depth in two grades. Or Cambridge Combined Science 0653, a single award. Or Pearson Double Award Science 4SD0, which is structured differently again. Each has its own papers, its own content list and its own practical route.

This matters because of who you then need. A triple-award student sitting 0610, 0620 and 0625 has three subjects and, properly, needs a biologist for one, a chemist for another and a physicist for the third. A coordinated-science student has one timetabled subject covering all three disciplines, which is a different and in some ways harder teaching problem, because the content is broad and shallow and the examination skips between disciplines inside a single paper.

The honest answer to whether anyone near Jumeirah Golf Estates can do this is: it depends which part. A capable general science tutor exists within a short drive and can help a Year 9 student or a Core-tier candidate. Somebody who knows that 0654 is assessed differently from three separate awards, who can mark an alternative-to-practical question against the scheme, and who teaches Extended-tier physics electricity properly — that person is scarce, and the pool inside one gated community is close to empty.

So this page does the work a parent would otherwise do over six phone calls. It identifies the codes and what each one means, explains the two practical routes and what each actually tests, sets out the Core and Extended ceiling in the sciences specifically, names where marks go in each discipline, and prices the market with attribution. Then it says what to ask a prospective tutor to find out in two minutes whether they know the difference.

There is one more structural fact worth having in mind, because it governs how much you should buy. A triple-award student has the fullest timetable in the school, and in this community they also have one of the longest afternoons. Three weekly science slots on top of that leaves no evening for the unaided practice that actually consolidates anything, which makes it both the most expensive and the least effective arrangement available. One discipline at a time, finished before the next begins, fits a Jumeirah Golf Estates week and produces more.

IB Gram teaches Jumeirah Golf Estates students one-to-one over live video at a fixed weekly time in Gulf Standard Time, matched to a named syllabus code. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-person home tutoring is a service we run only in India. We say that before you book, and our own fee follows a free trial lesson.

Three separate sciences

Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 with Cambridge, or 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 with Pearson, taken as three subjects producing three grades. The deepest route and the one most useful for a student heading to Higher Level sciences in the IB Diploma or to science A Levels. It is also three times the content, which is why students taking it more often need targeted help in one discipline rather than general science support.

Cambridge runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, with the February and March series offered to India only, so a Jumeirah Golf Estates candidate sits June with November as the resit route. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone's timetable; confirm yours with the exams officer.

0654Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Co-ordinated Sciences, double award

One timetabled subject covering biology, chemistry and physics, worth two grades, available at Core and Extended. The content is broader and shallower than triple award, and the papers move between disciplines within a single question set. Students who are strong in one discipline and weak in another find their grade pulled to the middle, which is why targeted work on the weakest discipline has an unusually visible effect.

Where a Jumeirah Golf Estates family is choosing between 0654 and triple award in Year 9, the question to ask the school is what the post-16 plan requires. The double award is widely accepted; some selective science A Level and IB Diploma Higher Level routes prefer the separate sciences, so ask the sixth form directly rather than assuming either way.

Pearson Double Award Science and Combined Science 0653

Pearson Edexcel's Double Award Science 4SD0 and Cambridge Combined Science 0653 are the other two routes a student may be on. Combined Science 0653 is a single award, so it produces one grade covering all three disciplines and carries less content than the double. Past-paper material does not transfer between these routes, which is the practical reason the code matters more than the subject name.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE examinations are available in May/June and in November. For a sense of the lead times, the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The sciences fail in discipline-specific ways, and knowing which discipline is costing the marks is more useful than knowing the overall grade. These are the areas Jumeirah Golf Estates families ask about most.

Physics: electricity and circuits

0625 and 4PH1 · 0654 Extended

The single largest source of lost marks across all science routes. Series and parallel reasoning holds up on a familiar diagram and collapses on an unfamiliar one, and formula rearrangement fails under time pressure. Three or four sessions usually produces a visible change.

Physics: forces, motion and energy

0625 and 4PH1 · 0654

Motion graphs, Newton's laws and energy transfers. Marks are lost by writing numbers without naming the energy stores involved, which is what the mark scheme asks for, and by treating velocity as a number rather than a vector.

Physics: waves and radioactivity

0625 and 4PH1 · 0654

Reflection, refraction, the electromagnetic spectrum, half-life and decay equations. Content-dense and self-contained, so it is efficient to tutor: two or three sessions and it is usually secure for the paper.

Chemistry: moles and stoichiometry

0620 and 4CH1 · 0654 Extended

Carries weight far beyond its apparent size and is routinely rushed. A student who cannot read an equation as a ratio loses marks in energetics, electrolysis and titration questions as well. The highest-value chemistry block available.

Chemistry: qualitative analysis and ion tests

0620 and 4CH1

Pure recall marks for the tests and observations for cations, anions and gases, and students leave them blank with remarkable consistency. One session, learned properly, is worth several marks on the practical route paper.

Chemistry: organic and bonding

0620 and 4CH1 · 0654

Functional groups, homologous series, ionic and covalent bonding and structure. The common failure is vocabulary: answers about bond strength where the question asks about intermolecular forces, which forfeits the mark entirely.

Biology: transport, respiration and photosynthesis

0610 and 4BI1 · 0654

The quantitative end of biology and where marks are most often lost on precision of language. An osmosis answer that never says partially permeable membrane, or an enzyme answer that says the enzyme died, scores poorly despite understanding.

Biology: genetics and inheritance

0610 and 4BI1 · 0654

Monohybrid crosses, Punnett squares, variation and selection. Highly teachable because the question shapes are predictable, and students lose marks by omitting the genotype key or the gamete row rather than by misunderstanding the biology.

Practical skills and the practical paper

All routes, by either practical test or alternative-to-practical

Planning, variable control, reading instruments, tabulating and drawing conclusions. Taught unevenly and assessed in its own right, which makes two or three dedicated sessions one of the better returns across every science route.

Mathematical fluency for science

All routes

Rearranging formulae, standard form, unit conversion, percentage change and reading graphs. Not a syllabus topic and frequently the actual problem. A marked paper shows it immediately: the science is understood and the arithmetic fails.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Science support works in three shapes, and the right one depends on the route your child is on and which discipline is failing.

Single-discipline block, four to six sessions

The most efficient purchase for almost every science student. Target the weakest discipline — usually physics, usually electricity — with a specialist in that discipline and past-paper questions in between. On a coordinated double award this has an unusually visible effect, because the grade is being pulled down by one third of the content.

  • A discipline specialist, not a general science tutor
  • Priced as a block, so the total is known at the start
  • Past-paper questions from the correct syllabus code only
  • Ends when the discipline is secure under timed conditions

Practical-paper block

Two or three sessions on whichever practical route your child's school uses: a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Planning, variable control, instrument reading, tabulation and conclusion drawing, all assessed in their own right and taught unevenly across schools. Short, cheap and reliably underbought.

  • Built around the route the school actually enters students for
  • Table and graph conventions taught explicitly, with marks attached
  • Variable control phrased the way the mark scheme wants it
  • Qualitative analysis recall covered where the code includes it

June-series run-in across three sciences

For triple-award students in the final eight weeks, a rotating schedule that gives each discipline a timed paper and a marking session rather than spreading attention evenly every week. It needs careful scheduling, which is easier online because no travel has to be arranged around it.

  • One discipline per week, rotating, with whole timed papers
  • Marking against the scheme as the main activity, not teaching
  • Timing can shift post-Iftar during Ramadan
  • Agreed stop date at study leave

01

Which science is your child actually sitting?

Start here, because everything else depends on it and most families cannot answer it on the first call. Look on the last school report or the examination entry confirmation for a syllabus code. With Cambridge it is four digits: 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry, 0625 Physics for three separate awards, 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences for the double award, 0653 Combined Science for the single. With Pearson the codes read differently: 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 for the separate sciences and 4SD0 for Double Award Science.

The difference is not administrative. A triple-award student has three subjects, three sets of papers and three grades. A coordinated double-award student has one timetabled subject assessed across all three disciplines in shared papers, worth two grades, with content that is broader and shallower. A single-award student has one grade and less content again. Past-paper material does not transfer between these routes, so a tutor working from the wrong set is testing your child on content they will never be asked.

There is a second question underneath it: Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher. In the sciences as elsewhere, a Core or Foundation entry caps the available grade at 5. For a student intending IB Diploma Higher Level sciences or science A Levels, that ceiling is decisive, and the entry is set by the school in Year 10 on Year 10 evidence.

If no code appears anywhere in the paperwork, one email to the head of year settles it. It is the single most valuable two minutes a Jumeirah Golf Estates parent can spend before buying any science tuition, and the answer determines the tutor, the papers and the realistic session count.

The practical paper, decoded

Almost every science route assesses practical skills, and almost no parent knows which way their child's school does it. There are two models. A practical test is sat in a laboratory with apparatus, under examination conditions. An alternative-to-practical paper is a written paper that assesses the same skills on paper: reading a scale from a diagram, spotting the flaw in a described method, completing a results table, plotting and drawing a conclusion. Which one applies depends on the school's entry, and it changes what revision should contain.

The important point is that the skills assessed are the same either way, and they are taught unevenly. Tabulation conventions carry marks: column headings with units, consistent decimal places, dependent variable on the correct axis. Variable control carries marks, and it has to be phrased as the scheme wants — naming what was held constant, not asserting that the experiment was fair. Conclusions carry marks for referring to the data rather than to expectation.

In chemistry there is an additional, purely recallable component on some routes: the qualitative analysis tests. Cation, anion and gas tests with their observations are a finite list, and students leave those marks blank with striking regularity. One session of memorisation work and they are secure, which is as close to free marks as this qualification offers.

For a Jumeirah Golf Estates student, two or three sessions on the practical route is one of the better returns available in science, and it is nearly always underbought because it does not feel like real content. Ask the school which route your child is entered for, then ask any prospective tutor what they would drill differently for each. A specialist answers in a sentence.

Where each science loses its marks

  • Physics: unfamiliar circuits, formula rearrangement, vectors as numbers
  • Chemistry: rushed moles, and bond-strength language used wrongly
  • Biology: imprecise phrasing rather than missing understanding
  • All three: command terms answered as the student prefers

Physics first, because it is the discipline that most often decides a science grade. Electricity is the problem area: series and parallel reasoning that works on a textbook circuit collapses on an unfamiliar diagram, and formula rearrangement fails under time pressure. Alongside that sit vector errors — velocity and force treated as plain numbers — and energy answers that give figures without naming the energy stores involved, which is exactly what the mark scheme asks for.

Chemistry loses marks in two places. The first is quantitative: mole calculations rushed, equations read as sentences rather than ratios, and unit or significant-figure slips carried through multi-step answers. The second is vocabulary: explanations given in terms of bond strength where the question is about intermolecular forces, or in terms of temperature where particle behaviour was wanted. Both patterns are visible on a marked paper in minutes.

Biology loses marks almost entirely on precision of language rather than on understanding. An osmosis answer that omits partially permeable membrane, an enzyme answer that says the enzyme died rather than denatured, a transport answer that describes diffusion without naming the concentration gradient. Students who clearly understand the biology score below their ability for want of four or five phrases used exactly.

Across all three disciplines there is a common fifth failure: command terms. Describe, explain, suggest and compare carry different mark allocations and ask for different things, and students answer the one they prefer. All of this is why we ask for one marked paper before quoting anything. The script names the pattern, and the pattern names the session count.

04

The tier ceiling in the sciences

The Core and Extended decision matters more in the sciences than in most subjects, because science is where post-16 plans most often depend on a specific grade. A Cambridge Core entry caps the maximum available grade at 5, and a Pearson Foundation entry does the same. A student aiming at IB Diploma Higher Level Chemistry or at science A Levels generally needs more than that, and no quantity of tuition lifts a ceiling.

On a coordinated double award the tier decision applies to the whole subject, which means it covers all three disciplines at once. That is worth noticing: a student who is strong in biology and weak in physics may be placed on Core because of physics, with the biology grade capped as collateral. Where that is the situation, a single-discipline physics block early in Year 11 is the intervention that might change the entry, and it is a much smaller spend than a year of general support.

Schools make these decisions for defensible reasons. A borderline candidate entered for Extended can score below the lowest Extended grade and come away with nothing, where Core would have produced a secure 4 or 5. That is a genuine risk. But the placement is made on Year 10 evidence, and a student whose work changes materially in the first term of Year 11 can sometimes be moved — if a parent asks.

Where the tier cannot change and the post-16 plan requires more, the honest options are to revise the plan or to enter the November series on the higher tier, potentially as a private candidate through an approved Dubai centre. Both are legitimate. Paying for thirty sessions against a ceiling is not, and we will say so before taking the booking.

One tutor for three sciences, or three tutors?

  • At Core tier, one competent general science tutor is often enough
  • At Extended tier, three disciplines need three specialists
  • Buy one discipline at a time, chosen from marked papers
  • On a double award, one weak discipline is pulling two grades

This is the practical question for triple-award families and the answer depends on the tier. At Core level, a strong general science tutor can reasonably cover all three disciplines, because the content depth is manageable and the common failures are mathematical and linguistic rather than discipline-specific. That is a legitimate and cheaper arrangement and we will say so when it applies.

At Extended level it stops being true. Extended-tier physics electricity, chemistry mole calculations with electrolysis, and biology genetics are three different teaching problems with three different mark-scheme vocabularies, and somebody adequate at all three is rarely good at any. A tutor covering three Extended sciences for the same student is usually covering one well and two approximately.

The efficient compromise is almost always to buy one discipline at a time. A marked paper in each science shows where the grade is actually being lost, which is usually one discipline rather than three, and a four to six session block with a specialist in that one is a far smaller purchase than a weekly slot covering everything. When it is done, look again; often nothing further is needed.

For coordinated double-award students the same logic applies more strongly, because one weak discipline pulls two grades down at once. Targeting it is both the cheapest and the most visible intervention available in this qualification, and it is rarely what gets sold.

A reasonable test of a prospective tutor, then, is to ask which discipline they would start with for your child and why. An answer drawn from the marked papers is the right one. An offer to cover all three weekly, at Extended tier, from the beginning of the syllabus, is the answer that costs the most and delivers the least.

What science tuition costs around Jumeirah Golf Estates

Rates in this market are set by format and tutor category rather than by discipline, so each science costs roughly what any specialist subject costs. Published Dubai rates for a qualified subject tutor working online run about AED 150 to AED 300 an hour. Specialist IGCSE, IB and A-Level provision is quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, one UK-based agency at AED 270, and premium named or examiner-led provision as high as AED 650. Budget online tuition is advertised from AED 45 to AED 150, with one platform listing from AED 33 to AED 52 and another from AED 45 to AED 65.

Where science differs from other subjects is the multiplication risk. A triple-award family that buys a weekly slot in each discipline is committing to three simultaneous arrangements, which at a mid-band rate is in the region of AED 1,800 to AED 3,600 a month and leaves the student no time for unaided practice. That is the most expensive mistake available in this qualification, and it is also the least effective, because practice between sessions is the mechanism that works.

The block structure is what keeps it sane. Four to six sessions in one discipline is roughly AED 800 to AED 1,200 at a mid-band rate. A practical-paper block of two or three sessions is AED 400 to AED 600. One qualitative-analysis session is a couple of hundred dirhams and is worth several marks. A June-series rotation across three sciences for eight weeks is a larger but finite commitment with a clear stop date.

In-home visits in Dubai are advertised at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour including travel, with one provider publishing AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions against AED 799 for eight online sessions. Every figure here was read from the provider's own published page in October 2026 and describes the market, not IB Gram, whose fee follows the free trial lesson.

Scheduling three sciences in a Jumeirah Golf Estates week

  • Never run three weekly science slots at once; one block at a time
  • In the final eight weeks, rotate one discipline a week with timed papers
  • Weekend mornings suit whole papers and practical-route work
  • Sessions shift post-Iftar in Ramadan and pause through mocks

Triple-award students have the fullest timetables in Year 11, and in this community they also have the longest afternoons. Campus finish runs from about 2.45pm to 3.30pm, the gate queue costs ten to twenty minutes, the drive is twelve to thirty-five minutes depending on whether the school sits in JVT or out towards Arabian Ranches, and clubs in Dubai Sports City take a good proportion of children out again until after six.

What follows is a planning rule rather than a preference: do not try to run three weekly science slots. A student with three tuition sessions, a full timetable and training has no evening left for the unaided practice that actually consolidates anything. One block at a time, finished before the next begins, fits the week and produces more.

In the final eight weeks before the June series, rotate instead. One discipline a week, a whole timed paper, and a marking session on it — which gives each science a proper hearing every three weeks and keeps the total commitment at one session a week. Online delivery is what makes that rotation practical, since no travel has to be rearranged each time the discipline changes.

Weekend mornings are the most underused slot in this community and the right one for whole papers and practical-route work, both of which need an uninterrupted ninety minutes that a weekday evening here rarely provides. Sessions can also shift post-Iftar during Ramadan and pause through mock weeks, and a stop date agreed at the start keeps the arrangement from running on unreviewed.

Who is permitted to tutor science in the UAE

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • A low rate usually reflects tutor category rather than illegality
  • Do not engage your child's own science teacher as a paid tutor
  • We link official papers and mark schemes rather than redistributing them

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own listing for issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing shows no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system.

Eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. That last category is worth knowing when comparing the AED 45 to AED 150 band to a specialist rate: the low figure is usually a legitimate tutor in a different category, not an unlicensed one. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so no amount can honestly be quoted.

One boundary applies with particular force in the sciences, where the qualified teacher pool at any school is small. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. That is press-reported and should be verified against the current ADEK policy document before being relied on as exact wording. Either way, do not engage your child's own science teacher privately.

And what nobody holds. A tutoring business with premises in Dubai needs an Educational Services Permit for a training institute from KHDA. IB Gram holds no such permit, has no UAE office or centre, and is not accredited, licensed, approved by or partnered with KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB. We also do not reproduce or distribute syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes; tutors reference and link to the official source.

Where we tutor

Science provision and tutor supply around Jumeirah Golf Estates

What this list illustrates is how the local picture differs by discipline. General science help exists nearby; Extended-tier discipline specialists mostly do not.

Jumeirah Park

The nearest school is British curriculum and therefore an IGCSE science provider, which makes this the one area where genuinely local help is plausible — usually for biology, which has the deepest teacher supply.

Dubai Sports City

The densest residential pocket nearby and the largest source of budget-band science tutors. Workable for Year 9 and Core-tier candidates, visibly insufficient for Extended-tier physics eight weeks from June.

Motor City

Active tuition centre market with group science classes. Group work covers content efficiently and does not address the individual circuit-reasoning failure that is costing the marks.

Al Barsha South and JVT

The densest tutor supply near this community, with the widest quality spread inside a single rate band. Ask for the syllabus code rather than for the subject here more than anywhere.

The Springs

Strongly British curriculum, so requests here are often Year 10 consolidation in one discipline rather than Year 11 rescue work across three. That is the cheaper and more effective intervention.

The Meadows

Mixed curriculum intake, so households often need IGCSE science for one child and IB sciences for another. Those are different tutors and bundling them is a false economy.

Emirates Hills

More enquiries in the premium band, where Dubai rates reach AED 650 an hour. For standard 0610 or 0620 support that band buys scarcity rather than better teaching.

Arabian Ranches

The longest regular school run from here, which pushes sessions to weekend mornings. Those slots suit full timed papers and practical-paper work better than weekday evenings anyway.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Find the syllabus code

It is on the last report or the entry confirmation. 0610, 0620, 0625 for three separate Cambridge sciences; 0654 for the coordinated double award; 0653 for combined; 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 or 4SD0 for Pearson. Past-paper material does not transfer between these, so this determines both the tutor and the revision material.

  2. 02

Establish the tier and the practical route

Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher, and whether the school enters students for a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. The tier sets a grade ceiling that tuition cannot lift, and the practical route changes what two or three of the most cost-effective sessions should contain.

  3. 03

Send a marked paper from each science

This is the step that saves the most money in this subject. Marked papers almost always show that the grade is being lost in one discipline rather than three, which turns a proposed three-slot weekly arrangement into a single four to six session block with a specialist.

  4. 04

Take the free trial on a lost question

You and your child meet the proposed discipline specialist over live video. Hand them a question that was lost and ask them what the mark scheme wanted. Afterwards you get their read, a session count and the fee, and you decide. No payment is needed to reach that point.

  5. 05

Finish one block before starting another

Run a single discipline at a time rather than three in parallel. The student needs evenings free for unaided practice, which is where consolidation happens, and sequential blocks fit a Jumeirah Golf Estates week in a way three weekly slots never will.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by code, not by the word science

0654 is not three separate sciences, 0653 is not 0654, and Pearson 4SD0 is structured differently again. We staff to the named code, because past-paper material does not transfer between routes and a tutor on the wrong set is testing content your child will never be asked.

Discipline specialists at Extended tier

At Core level one competent general science tutor is often enough and we will tell you so. At Extended level physics electricity, chemistry moles and biology genetics are three different teaching problems, and somebody adequate at all three is rarely good at any one of them.

We push the practical paper

Two or three sessions on the practical route — tabulation conventions, variable control phrasing, conclusions written from the data — is one of the better returns in the whole qualification, and it is almost always underbought because it does not feel like real content.

Blocks, not three parallel slots

Three weekly science sessions at a mid-band rate is AED 1,800 to AED 3,600 a month and leaves no evening for unaided practice, which is the mechanism that works. One discipline at a time, chosen from marked papers, is cheaper and produces more.

Online delivery, stated before booking

Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram makes no home visits in the UAE; in-person home tutoring exists only in our India service. For science the shared screen suits graph and circuit work, where both people can annotate the same diagram.

Attributed figures and no guarantees

Every AED rate here belongs to the provider or survey that published it, with the research date given, and our fee follows the trial. No guaranteed grades, no satisfaction statistics without a sample size and method, and no examiner claims we cannot evidence.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Golf Estates: your questions answered

What does my child's IGCSE science code actually mean?+

It tells you which qualification they are sitting, and the differences are substantial. Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 are three separate awards in Biology, Chemistry and Physics producing three grades. Cambridge 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences is one timetabled subject covering all three disciplines and worth two grades. Cambridge 0653 Combined Science is a single award. Pearson uses 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 for the separate sciences and 4SD0 for Double Award Science. Past-paper material does not transfer between these routes, which is why the code matters more than the subject name.

Is triple science or coordinated science better for my child?+

It depends on the post-16 plan and on capacity. Three separate sciences give the greatest depth and are the most useful preparation for IB Diploma Higher Level sciences or science A Levels, at three times the content. Coordinated double award 0654 is broader and shallower, produces two grades, and is widely accepted. The question to ask is specific: contact the sixth form or IB coordinator your child is likely to go to and ask what they expect for Higher Level sciences. Do not assume either way from what friends have chosen.

Does my child sit a practical exam or a written practical paper?+

One of the two, and the school decides which. A practical test is sat in a laboratory with apparatus under examination conditions. An alternative-to-practical paper assesses the same skills in writing: reading a scale from a diagram, identifying a flaw in a described method, completing a results table, plotting and concluding. Ask the school which route your child is entered for, because it changes what two or three of the most cost-effective revision sessions should contain. The skills assessed are the same either way and are taught unevenly.

Which science topic costs Jumeirah Golf Estates students the most marks?+

Physics electricity, consistently and across every route. Series and parallel reasoning that works on a textbook circuit collapses on an unfamiliar diagram, and formula rearrangement fails under time pressure. On a coordinated double award this is particularly costly, because one weak discipline pulls two grades down at once. Three or four sessions with a physicist on unfamiliar circuits and rearrangement usually produces a visible change at the next assessment, which makes it the best-value single block in the qualification.

Should one tutor cover all three sciences?+

At Core tier, often yes, and we will say so when it applies: the content depth is manageable and the common failures are mathematical and linguistic rather than discipline-specific. At Extended tier, no. Electricity, mole calculations with electrolysis, and genetics are three different teaching problems with three different mark-scheme vocabularies, and somebody adequate at all three is rarely strong in any. The efficient approach is one discipline at a time, chosen from marked papers, which usually turns out to be one rather than three.

My child is on Core science but wants Higher Level chemistry in the IB. Is that possible?+

It depends on the tier, and the tier is the problem. A Cambridge Core entry caps the maximum grade at 5, and most Higher Level science routes expect more. Three honest options: ask the school about a tier review early in Year 11, which a short diagnostic block can inform; enter the November series on the higher tier, potentially as a private candidate through an approved Dubai centre; or discuss Standard Level with the IB coordinator. What does not work is buying sessions against a ceiling that cannot move.

How many science sessions can a Year 11 student actually absorb?+

One a week, almost always, and never three. A triple-award student has the fullest timetable in the school, and in this community they also have one of the longest afternoons: campus finish to 3.30pm, gate queue, drive, then often training in Dubai Sports City. Three tuition slots on top of that leaves no evening for the unaided practice that consolidates anything. One block at a time, finished before the next begins, fits the week and produces more for considerably less money.

What is the cheapest useful science session we could buy?+

Probably one session on chemistry qualitative analysis, where that is part of your child's code. The cation, anion and gas tests with their observations are a finite, memorisable list carrying real marks, and students leave them blank with striking regularity. One session of structured memorisation work secures them. After that, a two or three session practical-paper block on tabulation conventions, variable control phrasing and writing conclusions from data is the next best return, and both are usually underbought.

Why does my child understand biology and still score poorly?+

Because biology marks turn on precision of language far more than on understanding. An osmosis answer that omits partially permeable membrane loses the mark. An enzyme answer that says the enzyme died rather than denatured loses the mark. A transport answer that describes diffusion without naming the concentration gradient loses the mark. A student who clearly grasps the biology can score a grade or two below their ability for want of four or five phrases used exactly, and that is fixable in a short block rather than a term.

How much does an IGCSE science tutor cost in this part of Dubai?+

Rates are set by format rather than discipline, so each science costs about what any specialist subject does: AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 200 to AED 450 and above for specialist provision, and up to AED 650 for premium examiner-led work. In blocks: four to six sessions in one discipline is roughly AED 800 to AED 1,200, and a practical-paper block is AED 400 to AED 600. Market rates researched October 2026, not IB Gram's prices, which follow the free trial.

Can my child take different sciences with different exam boards?+

Yes, and in Dubai it is common, because schools choose per department. A student can be a Cambridge biologist and a Pearson physicist in the same Year 11. It is not a problem in itself, but it has a practical consequence: the past-paper material, the tier names and in some cases the practical route differ between them, so one tutor covering both is managing two sets of conventions. This is another reason to establish every code before any tuition starts rather than afterwards.

With eight weeks left before June, what should science tuition even attempt?+

Not too late to be useful, but the plan should change. Eight weeks is enough to secure recallable marks — qualitative analysis, half-life calculations, genetics question shapes — and to fix technique: command terms, tabulation, conclusions written from data. It is not enough to teach two missing topics and polish technique simultaneously, and a provider promising both is selling optimism. The honest plan secures what is reachable, and treats the November series as the second attempt if the target grade needs one.

Is there a science specialist close to Jumeirah Golf Estates?+

It depends which part. A capable general science tutor who can help a Year 9 student or a Core-tier candidate does exist within a short drive. Somebody who knows that 0654 is assessed differently from three separate awards, can mark an alternative-to-practical question against the scheme, and teaches Extended-tier electricity properly is scarce, and the pool inside one villa community of a few thousand households is close to empty. That is why we match online by code and discipline rather than by distance.

Does a science tutor need a UAE permit to teach online?+

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and administered by MoHRE, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Ask any tutor directly whether they hold it and under which category. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no amounts are published.

Start with the code, then pick one discipline

The most useful two minutes a Jumeirah Golf Estates parent can spend on science tuition is finding the syllabus code and the tier. After that, send a marked paper from each science: it almost always shows the grade is being lost in one discipline rather than three, which turns a proposed three-slot weekly arrangement into a single short block with a specialist. We will match to the code, propose that block, and let you test the tutor in a free trial lesson over live video. No home visits in the UAE and no promised grades.
