IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Golf Estates

The cost of IB maths tuition depends on which maths it is

Families in Jumeirah Golf Estates ring about maths more than about any other subject, and the first question is almost always what it costs. The honest answer is that the hourly rate is the least interesting part. Published Dubai rates for a qualified subject tutor working online sit at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, and that band barely moves between subjects. What moves, sometimes by a factor of two, is how many hours the work takes — and that is decided by which Mathematics course your child is sitting.

There are two, and they are different subjects wearing the same name. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic, proof-driven route, running through calculus to the Higher Level Paper 3 investigation. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation is the statistical and modelling route, with technology use built into every paper. A student can be strong at one and genuinely weak at the other, and a tutor fluent in one can waste a term on the other.

The cost consequence is straightforward. Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the most hour-hungry mathematics course in the Diploma: the proof work, the calculus and the Paper 3 extended investigation each need separate attention, and twenty sessions over a year is a realistic rather than a cautious estimate. Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, where the loss is usually interpretation rather than technique, often moves in eight. Same hourly rate, very different total.

The other place money disappears is the exploration, the internal assessment every Mathematics student writes. It is worth 20 per cent of the grade and marked out of 20 across five criteria, and it is the one part of the course where early help is worth several times as much as late help. A badly chosen topic cannot be rescued in the final fortnight, and plenty of families pay for sessions trying.

There is a third cost nobody quotes, which is the cost of starting late. Most of the expensive mathematics problems we are asked to fix in Year 13 began as a small algebraic gap in Year 11 that nobody closed. Six sessions in the summer before the Diploma starts, spent on manipulation, radian measure and the structure of a proof, routinely removes the need for a twenty-session repair job two years later. Nobody in this market sells that block, because selling the repair is considerably more profitable than preventing it.

IB Gram teaches Jumeirah Golf Estates students one-to-one over live video at a fixed weekly time in Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-person home tutoring is an India-only service. Our own fee is quoted after a free trial lesson, because the number of sessions is what determines the real cost and that is only knowable once somebody has read your child's marked work.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics in the IB is taught across three programmes, and a Jumeirah Golf Estates family will usually be dealing with the transition between two of them. The handover points are where most of the damage happens.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Mathematics

Every Diploma student takes one mathematics course, either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Standard or Higher Level. Both cover five syllabus topics: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. The depth and emphasis differ sharply, and so does the technology expectation. Confirm your child's exact route and level on the school's subject guide before buying any tuition.

UAE schools sit the May session. We publish no IB examination or results dates on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification; take yours from your school's IB coordinator. The practical UAE point is the exploration deadline, which the school sets months ahead of the papers and which is where Jumeirah Golf Estates families most often need help earliest.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria rather than examined, with extended and standard mathematics streams in many schools from Year 9. The stream a student is placed in at 14 is a strong predictor of which Diploma route they will be offered at 16, which makes Year 10 the cheapest moment to intervene if Analysis and Approaches Higher Level is the goal.

Schools around Jumeirah Golf Estates are split between Middle Years Programme and Cambridge IGCSE at this age, so a family moving between campuses inside Dubai can find the assessment model changes completely. The gap that matters for Diploma mathematics is algebraic fluency, which the criteria-based model tests less visibly.

PRE-DPAge 15-16 · Year 11 into Year 12

The Year 11 to Diploma handover

The single most expensive gap in IB mathematics, and the cheapest one to close early. Students arriving into Analysis and Approaches Higher Level from a standard Year 11 course meet proof, radians and formal function notation in the first term, having never been taught them. Six sessions in the summer before Year 12 routinely prevents twenty sessions of repair in Year 13.

For students coming from Cambridge IGCSE, Additional Mathematics 0606 is the best available bridge because it introduces calculus and logarithms ahead of time. If your child's school offers it in Year 11 and Analysis and Approaches Higher Level is the plan, taking it is cheaper than any tuition block.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the Mathematics syllabus broken into the parts tuition is actually bought for, with a note on which route each matters most in and what it typically costs in sessions.

Proof and number

AA HL and SL

Direct proof, proof by contradiction, induction at Higher Level, and the binomial theorem. Marks are lost because the structure of a proof is never learned as a structure; students write true statements in an order that does not establish anything. Three or four sessions usually fixes the habit.

Functions and transformations

AA and AI, both levels

Domain and range, composite and inverse functions, rational functions and transformations. This is where weak algebra becomes visible, and where a Higher Level student who scraped through Year 11 starts to lose marks on questions that are not about functions at all.

Calculus

AA HL and SL, AI HL

Differentiation, integration by substitution and parts at Higher Level, related rates and kinematics. The most hour-hungry topic in the course and the usual reason an Analysis and Approaches Higher Level block runs to fifteen sessions rather than eight.

Trigonometry and radians

AA HL and SL

Identities, equations, the unit circle and radian measure. The characteristic error is mode: a calculator left in degrees produces plausible wrong answers across a whole question, and the method marks go with them.

Complex numbers

AA HL

Cartesian, modulus-argument and exponential forms, De Moivre's theorem and roots of unity. Content-heavy and self-contained, which makes it one of the more efficient topics to tutor: five focused sessions and it is usually secure.

Vectors

AA HL

Scalar and vector products, lines and planes, intersections and angles. Students lose marks on presentation as much as on method, writing a correct calculation without stating what it shows about the geometry.

Statistics and probability

AI HL and SL, AA both levels

Distributions, correlation and regression, hypothesis testing at Applications and Interpretation Higher Level. The Applications route failure is interpretation: a regression run correctly and then described in words that do not match the context of the question.

Modelling and financial mathematics

AI HL and SL

Functions as models, compound interest, amortisation and depreciation. Marks go on unjustified model choice. A student who fits a curve without saying why that function suits the data loses the reasoning marks regardless of the fit.

Graph theory and matrices

AI HL

Adjacency matrices, minimum spanning trees, Chinese postman and travelling salesman problems, and transition matrices. Rarely taught well from a textbook alone, and one of the few Applications and Interpretation topics that genuinely needs a specialist.

The exploration

AA and AI, both levels

A written mathematical investigation worth 20 per cent of the grade, marked out of 20 across five criteria. The highest-value help is at the topic and question stage, weeks before any writing. Support afterwards is feedback on the student's own draft, never writing or rewriting it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mathematics responds to three formats, and which one you buy should follow from what the marked papers show rather than from a default weekly habit.

Topic block, five to eight sessions

The most efficient purchase in IB mathematics. One named topic — calculus, complex numbers, hypothesis testing — worked through with past-paper questions until it is secure, then finished. Content-heavy topics like complex numbers and graph theory suit this format particularly well because they are self-contained.

  • A single named topic with a defined end point
  • Priced as a block so the total is known at the start
  • Past-paper questions on that topic only, marked between sessions
  • Ends when the topic is secure, not when the term does

Weekly one-to-one across the course

Right for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level, where the content load and the Paper 3 requirement mean the work genuinely runs across the year. Sequenced against the school's teaching order with a review point at each school assessment, so the arrangement gets checked rather than renewed by habit.

  • Same tutor, same weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time
  • Follows the school's teaching order, not a textbook sweep
  • Review against each school assessment built into the plan
  • Stop date agreed at the outset, usually study leave

Exploration supervision block

Three or four sessions at the topic-and-question stage, then one or two on a draft. The tutor interrogates whether the mathematics is of an appropriate level, whether the data can support the analysis, and whether the criteria are being addressed. They do not write, rewrite or complete any part of it.

  • Topic viability checked before any work is done
  • Mathematics level matched to the course and level
  • Feedback mapped to the five criteria by letter
  • Written record of the advice given, which protects the student

AA or AI: the decision that sets the hours

Most of the cost difference in IB maths tuition is decided before any tutor is hired. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic and proof-driven route; Applications and Interpretation is the statistical and modelling route with technology use embedded throughout. Both cover the same five syllabus topics on paper. In practice they ask for different habits of mind and they fail in different ways.

Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the most hour-hungry mathematics course in the Diploma. Proof, the full calculus toolkit, complex numbers, vectors and the Paper 3 investigation are each substantial, and a student arriving with shaky algebra will keep paying for that gap in every topic. A realistic block across Year 12 and 13 is fifteen to twenty sessions, and front-loading them is cheaper than spreading them.

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level sits at the other end. The content is more approachable and the losses are usually interpretive rather than technical: the calculation is right and the sentence describing it does not answer the question asked. That is a technique problem, and it often moves in eight sessions or fewer. Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level sits in between, with hypothesis testing and graph theory the two topics that genuinely need a specialist.

A note on choosing the route, for families still in Year 11. Pick on the mathematics, not on the perceived difficulty. A student who enjoys structure and manipulation will find Analysis and Approaches easier than its reputation; a student who thinks in data and context will do better and score higher on Applications and Interpretation. Then check the course requirement for the degrees being considered, because some engineering and mathematics programmes specify the Analysis and Approaches route.

What each paper is worth, and what that changes

Revision is usually spread evenly across a course, and the weightings say it should not be. At Standard Level, both Mathematics routes are assessed through two papers carrying 40 per cent each, with the exploration making up the remaining 20 per cent. At Higher Level the structure changes: three papers at 30, 30 and 20 per cent, plus the exploration at 20. Confirm the exact figures for your child's cohort against the school's subject guide, because the assessment model is periodically revised.

Two consequences follow. First, the exploration is worth as much as a whole paper at Standard Level and more than Paper 3 at Higher Level. A student who treats it as homework is leaving a fifth of the grade to chance, and it is the one component where the work is done in advance with full access to help.

Second, at Higher Level Paper 3 deserves separate preparation. It is a short paper of extended investigative questions, and it rewards a specific skill: following an unfamiliar line of mathematical reasoning across several parts where each answer feeds the next. Students who are strong on Papers 1 and 2 frequently underperform on it because nobody practised that skill as a skill.

For Analysis and Approaches there is a third consequence. Paper 1 is non-calculator, and non-calculator fluency decays fast when every piece of homework is done with a device on the desk. Drilling it deliberately in the final eight weeks is one of the highest-return activities available.

03

The exploration: twenty marks across five criteria

The mathematical exploration is the component families underestimate and then overpay to fix. It is worth 20 per cent of the Mathematics grade and it is marked out of 20 against five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. Use of mathematics carries the largest allocation, which is the single most useful fact about it.

That allocation explains most of the marks lost. A beautifully written exploration about a topic the student cares about, using mathematics well below the level of the course, cannot score well on the criterion worth the most. Conversely, an exploration using appropriate mathematics badly presented loses across presentation and communication but keeps its core. The topic choice, made in a single conversation months before any writing, determines which of those two a student is heading for.

This is why exploration help is worth several times as much early as late. Three sessions at the topic-and-question stage, testing whether the mathematics is of the right level and whether the chosen data can support the analysis, is a small block. Trying to rescue a finished exploration built on unsuitable mathematics in the final fortnight is expensive, stressful and usually unsuccessful.

The boundary matters here more than anywhere else in the course. A tutor may discuss topic viability, explain what each criterion rewards, question whether the mathematics is appropriate, mark a draft against the criteria and teach referencing. A tutor may not write any part of it, rewrite the student's prose, supply the topic as a finished product, provide data the student has not collected, or edit it to completion. Our tutors decline requests that cross that line. Keep the written session notes: a dated record that the help given was feedback on the student's own drafts is the student's protection.

04

Where maths marks are actually lost

  • Missing method lines on multi-mark questions are the largest single loss
  • Rounding intermediate values and carrying them forward costs accuracy marks
  • Degree-radian mode errors invalidate whole questions invisibly
  • Show that, hence and verify are instructions, not synonyms
  • On Applications and Interpretation, interpretation sentences carry the marks

Examiners see patterns, not weaknesses in a subject. The commonest is method. On a five or six-mark question, most of the marks are for the steps, and a student who writes only a final answer loses nearly all of them when that answer is wrong. This is pure habit, costs nothing to fix, and in a Jumeirah Golf Estates student's mock paper it is usually worth several marks a page.

The second is rounding. An intermediate value rounded to three significant figures and then carried forward produces a final answer that is close but not correct, and the accuracy mark goes. Working to full calculator precision and rounding once at the end is a rule, not a preference, and students break it constantly.

The third is mode. A calculator left in degrees when a question is set in radians yields plausible wrong answers through an entire question, with no error visible to the student. Checking the mode before every paper is a thirty-second habit that nobody teaches.

The fourth is command terms. Show that requires a derivation, not a restatement of the result; hence means the previous part must be used; verify and prove are not interchangeable. And the fifth, specific to Applications and Interpretation, is interpretation: the regression runs, the correlation coefficient appears, and the sentence underneath does not say what it means for the context the question described. Each of these is diagnosable from one marked paper, which is why we ask for one before quoting anything.

05

What maths tuition costs in Dubai, by route

Start with the total rather than the rate, because the total is what differs. At the published Dubai band for a qualified subject tutor working online, roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, an Applications and Interpretation Standard Level block of eight sessions lands around AED 1,600 at a mid-band figure. An Analysis and Approaches Higher Level programme of eighteen sessions across two years lands nearer AED 3,600 at the same rate. The hourly price is identical; the project is twice the size.

For context on the wider market, budget online tuition is advertised in Dubai from AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with one platform listing from AED 33 to AED 52. In-home one-to-one visits including travel run from AED 180 to AED 500, with one provider publishing AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions against AED 799 for eight online sessions. IB and IGCSE specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, one UK agency at AED 270, and premium examiner-led provision as high as AED 650. All of those were read from the providers' own pages in October 2026.

For Mathematics specifically, the band worth paying for is the qualified specialist one. The budget band buys supervision, which does not help a Higher Level calculus problem. The premium band buys scarcity, which matters for graph theory and rarely for anything else in this syllabus. These are market figures rather than IB Gram prices; ours are quoted after the free trial lesson.

The highest-return spend in IB maths is also the cheapest: six sessions in the summer before Year 12, closing the algebra and proof gap before Analysis and Approaches Higher Level starts. Families who do it rarely need the twenty-session repair job in Year 13. Nobody sells it, because selling the repair is more profitable.

Paper 3 at Higher Level, and why it is a separate job

  • Paper 3 is Higher Level only and carries 20 per cent of the grade
  • Errors propagate across parts, so there is little room to recover
  • The skill is following an unfamiliar chain of reasoning, and it is trainable
  • Three or four dedicated sessions late in Year 13 is the efficient shape

Paper 3 exists only at Higher Level, carries 20 per cent of the grade, and is the component capable students most often underperform on. It is short, it has few questions, and each question runs across several parts where every answer feeds the next. A slip in part b propagates to part f, and there is no second question to recover on.

What it rewards is not more content. It is the ability to follow an unfamiliar line of mathematical reasoning that the paper sets up for you, and to keep going when you cannot see where it is heading. That is a trainable skill and it is trained by doing extended investigative questions under timed conditions, with somebody walking the reasoning back afterwards to show where it was lost.

Most school revision does not cover it well, for a practical reason: there are far fewer Paper 3 questions in existence than Paper 1 and 2 questions, so the material runs out quickly. A tutor who has taught the course for several years is the person most likely to have worked through what exists and to know which questions are worth the time.

For an Analysis and Approaches Higher Level student in Jumeirah Golf Estates, the sensible shape is three or four dedicated Paper 3 sessions in the second half of Year 13, after the content is covered, sat under conditions and then marked line by line. Doing it earlier wastes the scarce material; doing it later leaves no time to change anything.

07

Which route do universities expect?

This is the question that should drive the route choice in Year 11, and it is routinely answered with rumour. The accurate position is that it depends on the degree and the institution, and that the only reliable source is the published entry requirement for the specific course a student is considering. Engineering, mathematics, physics and some economics programmes commonly specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. Many other degrees accept either route.

For families looking at UAE universities, there is a separate process to understand and it is not a tutoring matter. The school-leaving certificate goes through Ministry of Education equivalency, which the Ministry performs. For the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. For the American track, mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the IB there is an equivalency figure circulating on tutoring sites, and we are not repeating it, because we have not read it on a Ministry of Education source. If anybody quotes you an IB points threshold for equivalency, ask where on moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority it appears. Tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency and no tutoring provider performs or guarantees it.

The practical advice for a Jumeirah Golf Estates family in Year 11 is unglamorous. Write down the three or four degree subjects under consideration, find the published mathematics requirement for each at two or three universities, and choose the route from that list rather than from what the student's friends are taking.

Scheduling maths in a Jumeirah Golf Estates week

  • Weekday maths sessions work best between 6.30pm and 8.15pm in this community
  • Schedule after the first attempt at homework, not before it
  • Weekend mornings suit exploration work and timed Paper 3 practice
  • Sessions move post-Iftar during Ramadan and pause through mock weeks

Mathematics is the subject where session timing matters most, because it needs a student who can still concentrate. In this community the afternoon runs late: campus finish between 2.45pm and 3.30pm, ten to twenty minutes of gate queue, twelve to thirty-five minutes of driving depending on whether the school is in Al Barsha South or Arabian Ranches, and then clubs in Dubai Sports City for a good proportion of children.

The practical result is that a maths session works best between 6.30pm and 8.15pm on weekdays, after a first attempt at the problem set. That ordering matters: a student who has tried the questions arrives with a specific sticking point, which is what a specialist can resolve in forty minutes. A session scheduled before homework becomes supervised homework, which is an expensive way to build dependence.

Weekend mornings are the most underused slot in this community and the right one for exploration work and for timed Paper 3 practice, both of which need an uninterrupted ninety minutes that a weekday evening cannot reliably provide.

Online delivery is what makes any of this flexible. There is no tutor in a car, so a session can move within the week when a tournament or a school deadline collides, shift to post-Iftar during Ramadan, and pause through mock weeks. We also agree a stop date at the start, so a maths arrangement is reviewed deliberately rather than renewed out of habit through a second year.

Where we tutor

Communities around Jumeirah Golf Estates and what they ask for

Mathematics demand varies by community in a way that tracks the school mix rather than income. These are the patterns across the areas near Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Dubai Sports City

Adjacent, dense, and the source of most Standard Level requests near this community. Also the reason maths sessions here often start at 7pm rather than 5.30pm, since academy training occupies the earlier slot.

Jumeirah Park

British-curriculum intake, so requests here are more often Additional Mathematics 0606 as a bridge than Diploma mathematics itself. That is usually the cheaper intervention and we will say so.

Al Barsha South and JVT

The nearest Diploma provision, fifteen to twenty-five minutes out. Analysis and Approaches Higher Level requests cluster here, and they are the longest blocks we quote.

The Meadows

Adjacent to IB continuum provision, so families here often come with a Middle Years Programme child and a Diploma child at once. The Year 11 handover is the conversation that matters in that household.

Emirates Hills

More demand for the premium and examiner-led bands, where published Dubai rates reach AED 650 an hour. For standard Analysis and Approaches work that band buys scarcity rather than better teaching.

Arabian Ranches

Established Diploma provision and the longest school run from Jumeirah Golf Estates in regular use. Weekend morning sessions work better here than weekday ones for exploration work.

The Springs

Townhouse community with a strongly British-curriculum profile, so the request is often pre-Diploma algebra consolidation in Year 11 rather than Diploma content.

Motor City

Large campus intake and an active small-group tuition market. Group maths revision works for content sweeps and not for the individual algebra gaps that actually cost marks.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the route and the level

Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Applications and Interpretation Standard Level are different projects with different costs. The school's subject guide or the student's timetable states which one applies. Getting this wrong is the most expensive error available, because the tutor and the materials both change.

  2. 02

    Send one marked paper

A marked mock tells a specialist in twenty minutes what a conversation cannot establish in an hour: whether the losses are method lines, rounding, radian mode, command terms or genuine content gaps. It also determines the realistic session count, which is what the quote is actually based on.

  3. 03

Decide block or weekly, from the evidence

If the paper shows two habit errors and one weak topic, a five to eight session topic block is the right purchase and we will say so. If it shows an Analysis and Approaches Higher Level student behind on calculus, that is a weekly arrangement across the year with review points. The evidence picks the format.

  4. 04

Take the free trial on a lost question

You and your child meet the proposed route-specific tutor over live video. Hand them a question from the mock that was lost and watch how it is unpicked. Afterwards you get the tutor's read, a session count and the fee, and you decide. No payment is required to reach this point.

  5. 05

Put the exploration in the calendar early

Whatever else is agreed, book the three-session exploration block at the topic stage rather than the draft stage. It is 20 per cent of the grade, it is marked out of 20 across five criteria, and early help on topic viability is worth several times what late help on a finished draft can achieve.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Route-specific tutors

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are staffed separately, because proof and modelling are different teaching jobs. A tutor who is excellent at one can lose a term on the other, and in this market a generalist maths tutor rarely volunteers which route they actually know.

Priced by the project, not the hour

The hourly band for a qualified online subject tutor in Dubai barely moves between subjects. What moves is the number of hours, and that depends on the route, the level and what the marked paper shows. So we quote after the trial, with a session count attached, rather than selling an open-ended slot.

The exploration is treated as 20 per cent

We push families towards the exploration block early, at the topic stage, because that is where the marks are won and where the cheapest help is. A finished exploration built on mathematics below the level of the course cannot be rescued in a fortnight, whatever is paid.

Paper 3 gets its own sessions

At Higher Level, Paper 3 carries 20 per cent and rewards a skill nothing else in the course trains. Material is scarce, so it is worth spending it deliberately, late in Year 13 and under timed conditions, with the reasoning walked back afterwards.

Online delivery, said plainly

Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram makes no home visits in the UAE; in-person home tutoring exists only in our India service. You read that before booking, and no UAE enquiry is routed to a non-UAE phone number as the conversion path.

No promises and no invented numbers

No guaranteed grades, no score improvements, no satisfaction statistics without a sample size, a date and a method, and no self-asserted ratings. Every AED figure on this page belongs to a named provider or survey with the research date stated, and our own fee comes after the trial.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Golf Estates: your questions answered

What does an IB maths tutor cost for a family in Jumeirah Golf Estates?+

The hourly rate matters less than the total. Published Dubai rates for a qualified subject tutor working online sit at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, and that band barely varies by subject. What varies is the number of sessions: an Applications and Interpretation Standard Level block is realistically eight sessions, around AED 1,600 at a mid-band rate, while an Analysis and Approaches Higher Level programme across two years is fifteen to twenty, nearer AED 3,000 to AED 4,000. Those are market figures researched in October 2026, not IB Gram's prices, which follow the free trial.

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI, in practice?+

Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-driven, with a non-calculator Paper 1 and heavy calculus, complex numbers and vectors at Higher Level. Applications and Interpretation is statistical and modelling-led, with technology permitted throughout and hypothesis testing and graph theory at Higher Level. Both cover the same five syllabus topics on paper and ask for different habits of mind. A student strong at one can genuinely struggle with the other, which is why we staff them separately rather than offering a general maths tutor for both.

Which IB maths route should my child choose in Year 11?+

Choose on the mathematics and on the published entry requirements, not on reputation. A student who enjoys structure and manipulation often finds Analysis and Approaches easier than its reputation suggests; a student who thinks in data and context scores higher on Applications and Interpretation. Then write down three or four degree subjects under consideration and look up the actual mathematics requirement at two or three universities for each. Engineering, mathematics and physics commonly specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. Many other degrees accept either route.

How much is the maths exploration worth and how is it marked?+

It is worth 20 per cent of the Mathematics grade and marked out of 20 against five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics. Use of mathematics carries the largest allocation at 6 marks, which is the most useful fact about it. A well-written exploration using mathematics below the level of the course cannot score well on the criterion worth most, so the topic decision made months earlier determines the ceiling. Confirm the current criteria with your school's subject guide.

How early should exploration help start, and what is a tutor allowed to do?+

Yes, within a clear boundary, and earliest is best. A tutor can discuss whether a topic is viable, question whether the mathematics is at the right level for the course, check that the data can support the analysis, explain what each of the five criteria rewards, mark a draft against them, and teach referencing. A tutor cannot write any part of it, rewrite the student's prose, supply the topic as a finished product, provide data the student has not collected, or edit it to completion. Our tutors decline requests that cross that line.

Why does Paper 3 need separate preparation at Higher Level?+

Because it rewards a skill nothing else in the course trains. Paper 3 is Higher Level only, carries 20 per cent of the grade, and consists of a small number of extended investigative questions where each part feeds the next, so an early slip propagates and there is no second question to recover on. The ability to follow an unfamiliar chain of reasoning is trainable, but the available material is scarce, so three or four dedicated sessions late in Year 13 under timed conditions is the efficient shape rather than scattering it earlier.

Which maths errors cost Jumeirah Golf Estates students the most marks?+

On method, most of all. On a five or six-mark question the steps carry most of the marks, and a student who writes only the final answer loses nearly all of them when it is wrong. Then rounding: an intermediate value rounded and carried forward produces a near-miss that forfeits the accuracy mark. Then calculator mode, where degrees left on during a radian question yields plausible wrong answers invisibly. Then command terms: show that needs a derivation, hence means the previous part must be used. All of these are visible in one marked paper.

How many maths sessions will my child actually need?+

It depends on the route, the level and what the marked paper shows. Applications and Interpretation Standard Level often moves in eight sessions because the losses are interpretive. Analysis and Approaches Standard Level is typically ten to twelve. Analysis and Approaches Higher Level runs to fifteen or twenty across two years, because calculus, proof, complex numbers and Paper 3 are each substantial. Add three to five for the exploration. Any provider quoting before reading a marked paper is pricing a guess, and you will pay for the first sessions of diagnosis.

My child is moving into IB maths from Year 11. What is the cheapest thing I can do?+

Six sessions in the summer before Year 12, closing the algebra, radian and proof-structure gap before Analysis and Approaches Higher Level begins. Students arriving from a standard Year 11 course meet proof, radian measure and formal function notation in the first term having never been taught them, and the gap then costs marks in topics that are not about any of those things. If the school offers Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 in Year 11, taking it is cheaper still, and it is the best available bridge.

Is online maths tuition workable, or does it need a shared desk?+

Mathematics is arguably the subject best suited to live video, because the medium is a shared writing surface. A worked solution builds line by line where both people can see it, the mark scheme sits open on both sides, and the session can be revisited. What matters far more than the room is whether the tutor knows the route: a specialist in Analysis and Approaches Higher Level calculus will do more for a grade over video than a general maths tutor will at the kitchen table.

What time should a maths session run for a child in this community?+

Between 6.30pm and 8.15pm on weekdays, and after the first attempt at the problem set rather than before it. The afternoon here runs late: campus finish between 2.45pm and 3.30pm, ten to twenty minutes of gate queue, twelve to thirty-five minutes of driving, and then clubs in Dubai Sports City for many children. A student who has tried the questions arrives with a specific sticking point, which is what forty minutes with a specialist can resolve. Weekend mornings are better for exploration work and timed Paper 3 practice.

Does the IB maths route affect UAE university equivalency?+

No, and the two should not be confused. Equivalency of a school-leaving certificate is a Ministry of Education process, performed by the Ministry rather than by a school or a tutor, and tuition is not a requirement for it. For the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels. For the IB, verify any points figure directly on moe.gov.ae; we do not publish one we have not read at source.

Should the same tutor take both maths and physics at Higher Level?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Physics Higher Level share real mathematical ground, so a tutor who teaches both can make the overlap explicit, which helps. The test is whether they know both syllabuses at paper level, not whether they are comfortable with the content. Where a single tutor genuinely covers both, scheduling gets easier and continuity improves. Where they do not, two specialists are better than one generalist, and we will tell you which situation applies.

What if no Analysis and Approaches specialist is free when we need one?+

You are told the realistic wait rather than offered a general maths tutor. Availability for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level is thinnest in the weeks before the May session and for the Paper 3 work specifically, and Applications and Interpretation Higher Level graph theory is the single scarcest request in this syllabus. Where the available specialist is based outside the UAE, we say so before any payment, including which time zone they teach from. A shorter diagnostic block can run meanwhile if that is useful.

Name the route, then count the hours

An IB maths tutor costs roughly the same per hour whichever route your child is on. What differs is the size of the job: eight sessions for an Applications and Interpretation Standard Level interpretation problem, closer to twenty for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level across two years, plus three for the exploration if you book it at the topic stage rather than the draft stage. Send us the route, the level, one marked paper and two evening windows that survive the Sports City run. You will get a route-specific specialist, a free trial lesson over live video, a session count and a fee.
