CBSE to IB Transition in the UAE

A CBSE to IB transition in the UAE is a purchase as much as an academic move, and families deserve the arithmetic before the decision. Indian curricula account for roughly a quarter of Dubai private school enrolment, and every year a share of those Class 10 students move into the Diploma. This page prices the move honestly: what CBSE trains well, what the Diploma asks for that CBSE never tested, what the support costs at published UAE rates, and when the move is worth it. Teaching is one-to-one and online.

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What a family is actually buying when it moves from CBSE to the Diploma

The UAE has one of the largest concentrations of Indian-curriculum schooling outside India. Dubai alone had 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula, with Indian curricula accounting for roughly a quarter of that enrolment. Every year a portion of those students leave CBSE at the end of Class 10 and enter the Diploma Programme, usually at a different school, and almost always because a family has concluded that the Diploma opens university routes the Indian boards make harder to reach.

That conclusion is often right and it is rarely costed. The move involves a change of school with its own fee structure, two years of a programme that assesses in a way CBSE never did, and in most cases a period of paid support while the student learns a new kind of academic work. Set against that is a genuine return: a qualification read directly by admissions offices in the United Kingdom, North America, Europe and the UAE, and a transcript built from six subjects in depth rather than from a single terminal examination.

The academic picture is more balanced than either side of the argument usually admits. CBSE trains procedural mathematics and quantitative science to a standard that frequently puts a student ahead of their Diploma cohort in the first term. What it does not train is the thing the Diploma weights most heavily outside the examination hall: an independent piece of assessed work the student scopes, carries out and writes up alone, worth a fifth to a quarter of the grade in most subjects. A strong CBSE student is not behind on content. They are starting from zero on a component worth a quarter of every subject.

The cost side has one piece of genuinely good news attached to it this year. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Dubai's 2026-27 intake also adds seven new private schools, four following UK curricula and three offering the International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places. A family moving school in this cycle is doing so into a market with more capacity and a frozen fee position.

This page sets out the move in that order: what it buys, where Class 10 leaves each subject, what the support actually costs at published market rates, the two-year arcs compared, the route decision in mathematics and science, and a plain view on when the move pays and when it does not. Every AED figure names the provider or authority that published it. Teaching for UAE families is delivered one to one over live video; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three qualifications sit in this decision, and the structural differences between them matter more than their reputations. Reading them side by side is what makes the real gap visible.

CBSEAges 5-18 · Classes 1-12

Central Board of Secondary Education

A national Indian curriculum built on NCERT material, with board examinations at the end of Class 10 and Class 12 and a comparatively small internal component. The strengths are systematic coverage, strong procedural mathematics and quantitative science, and a clear path through a known syllabus. Assessment rewards accuracy and recall under timed conditions, and the student is rarely asked to decide what a question should be.

CBSE schools in the UAE follow the Indian academic calendar, which runs from April rather than from September, so a student moving to a Diploma school is also moving between academic years. That calendar mismatch creates either a short gap or an overlap, and it is worth planning for deliberately rather than discovering in March.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level with 240 recommended taught hours each and three at Standard Level with 150, graded 1 to 7, plus up to three points from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. Internal assessment contributes a fifth to a quarter of the grade in most subjects. There is no public examination in the middle of the two years.

The Diploma accounts for a small share of Dubai private school enrolment, so a student moving from a large CBSE school into a Diploma cohort is usually moving from a year group of several hundred into one of a few dozen. That changes the social experience as much as the academic one, and families are better served hearing it than discovering it.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four criteria per subject on a 1 to 8 scale, with the Personal Project in MYP 5. A student moving from CBSE Class 10 into DP1 skips the MYP entirely, which means they arrive without the inquiry-based habits their classmates spent five years building. That is the single clearest structural disadvantage in the move, and it is a habit gap rather than a knowledge gap.

Where a family is considering the move earlier, at the end of Class 8 or Class 9 into MYP 4 or MYP 5, the transition is materially easier because the student meets criterion-based assessment and the Personal Project before the Diploma stakes apply. Families who can move a year earlier usually should.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is the handover point for each subject: what CBSE Class 10 finished with, and what the Diploma course assumes early in DP1. The gap, not the subject, is what paid support should be spent on.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

CBSE Class 10 algebra and trigonometry are usually a strong foundation, and CBSE students frequently find the first term of Analysis comfortable. The gap appears at formal proof and at the exploration, which asks the student to develop mathematics of their own choosing rather than solve set problems.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistics content goes well beyond CBSE Class 10, particularly at Higher Level where inference and hypothesis testing appear, and a graphical display calculator is assumed in every paper. CBSE students often arrive with long-hand habits that cost time on a calculator-permitted paper.

Physics

HL and SL

Content overlap is substantial and often favourable. What is new is uncertainty and error treatment, and the scientific investigation, which requires the student to design an experiment, justify the method and handle messy data. Neither has a CBSE Class 10 equivalent.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Quantitative chemistry and mole calculations usually transfer well. Organic mechanisms are treated as a reasoning system rather than a set of named reactions, which is a shift in approach rather than in content, and it takes about a month to settle.

Biology

HL and SL

The terminology load is comparable, so content is rarely the issue. The change is in what gets marked: application of a named process to unfamiliar data, under strict command-term discipline, plus an independently designed investigation. Students who memorised well find this harder than students who understood well.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

This is the subject where the gap is widest for most CBSE students. The course assesses unseen non-literary text, a spoken individual oral on a global issue, and at Higher Level a formal essay on a studied work. Sustained independent argument is a skill built over months, not a topic to be covered.

Economics

HL and SL

Usually a new subject, which removes the problem of unlearning. The real demand is diagram fluency and three commentaries on published articles, which requires reading the financial press rather than a textbook. Higher Level adds a quantitative paper.

Business Management

HL and SL

Accessible content with a demanding internal assessment, which at Higher Level is a research project on a real organisation. CBSE students often choose it as a safe Group 3 option and then meet the research project, which is the component with no prior equivalent.

Hindi B

HL and SL

A genuine advantage for many students arriving from CBSE, where Hindi has been studied for years. Availability varies between UAE Diploma schools, so confirm whether the school teaches it or would require a school-supported arrangement before assuming Group 2 is settled.

Computer Science

HL and SL

CBSE Class 10 computing exposure varies widely by school. The Diploma course is conceptual as well as practical, with abstract data structures at Higher Level and a case study released ahead of the session. Provision at Higher Level is thin across UAE schools, so check availability first.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Support for this move splits into three jobs, and they have different price tags because they have different lengths. All three are delivered online, one to one.

Pre-move readiness block

A bounded block of sessions before DP1 starts, concentrated on the written and independent components rather than on content. For a CBSE student the gap is almost never the mathematics, so spending the block on English A and on what an internal assessment requires is where the money does the most work.

  • Topic and skill list agreed before the first session
  • Weighted towards written argument and independent task design
  • Ends when the list is covered, not on a rolling subscription
  • Delivered over live video in Gulf Standard Time

Weekly support through DP1

One or two subjects, following the new school's scheme of work and internal deadlines. For most CBSE arrivals the right first subject is English A or the Group 3 subject, not mathematics, which is the opposite of what families expect and what the first term usually demonstrates.

  • Tracks the school's sequence rather than a parallel syllabus
  • Command terms and mark schemes used from the first session
  • Internal assessment supported as feedback on the student's own drafts
  • Same tutor across the year where availability allows

Internal assessment and Extended Essay planning

Short, specific sessions on the components with no CBSE equivalent: scoping a question that can be answered within a word limit, designing an investigation whose data can support a conclusion, and managing a self-set timeline across a term.

  • Scoping discussed; the student does all the writing
  • Criteria explained with the official wording, not paraphrased
  • Deadlines mapped backwards from the school's submission date
  • No drafting, no editing to completion, no supplied text

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What CBSE trains strongly, and what it does not train at all

  • Strong: procedural mathematics, quantitative science, examination discipline
  • Absent: independent assessed work the student scopes alone
  • Absent: extended written argument against published criteria
  • The gap is a task gap, which is why it is invisible on a report card

An honest account of this transition begins with what the student brings, because most published advice treats the move as a remedial exercise and it is not. CBSE produces strong procedural mathematics: a Class 10 student who has worked seriously is typically fast and accurate with algebra, comfortable with trigonometric manipulation, and well drilled in the quantitative parts of physics and chemistry. In a Diploma cohort assembled from several curricula, that student often leads the first term of mathematics and is visibly ahead in the calculation-heavy parts of science.

The board also trains examination discipline. CBSE's terminal structure rewards accuracy under timed conditions and systematic coverage of a known syllabus, and students who have been through two board years arrive with revision habits their Diploma classmates may lack. That is a real asset in DP2, when a broad syllabus has to be covered against multiple papers in a short window.

What CBSE does not train is independent academic work. There is no equivalent of an internal assessment in which the student decides the question, designs the method, handles data that does not behave, and writes it up against published criteria over several weeks. There is no equivalent of the Extended Essay. There is no equivalent of Theory of Knowledge, where no syllabus exists to revise. Those components carry a quarter of most subject grades and up to three further Diploma points, and a strong CBSE student starts from zero on all of them.

The second thing it trains less is extended written argument. Diploma English A assesses unseen non-literary text and a spoken individual oral, and at Higher Level a formal essay on a studied work; several Group 3 subjects assess sustained evaluative writing. A student used to structured answers of a known length finds this harder than any mathematics in the programme, and it is the gap most families under-budget for because it does not look like a content deficit.

02

Class 10 to DP1, subject by subject

The table below is the transition map for this specific move. Each row names where CBSE Class 10 leaves a student, what the Diploma course assumes early in DP1, the gap between the two, and a realistic number of support weeks assuming one session a week alongside normal school work. The weeks column is an estimate from teaching experience and not a published figure.

The pattern across the rows is the useful thing. In mathematics and the quantitative sciences, the content column shows overlap or advantage, and the gap column names a task rather than a topic: the exploration, the investigation, the uncertainty treatment. In English and the Group 3 subjects, the gap is a skill with a long build time. A family reading this table top to bottom usually revises its assumption about where the money should go.

One row deserves separate comment. Hindi B is an asset rather than a gap for many students arriving from CBSE, and it can turn Group 2 from a problem into a strength. Availability is the constraint: not every UAE Diploma school teaches it, and where it is not taught the alternative is another language from a standing start or a school-supported arrangement the coordinator has to agree. Settle that before the option form rather than after.

The weeks column also assumes the student has nothing else academic running, which is true in a summer gap and false once DP1 has started. A gap estimated at six weeks over a holiday is realistically a full term's work alongside five other subjects, and it is being closed while new content arrives on top of it every week. That is the argument for using whatever calendar gap the April-to-September mismatch creates rather than treating it as time off.

The cost of the move, in AED, with sources

This is the section competitor pages in this market do not write. Three of the six researched for this project publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars, which is not a currency UAE families transact in. What follows is the market in AED, attributed row by row, so a family can do the arithmetic before committing rather than after.

Start with fees, because that is the largest number and this year it is unusually stable. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Supply is also rising: seven new private schools join the emirate for 2026-27, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, adding 16,846 places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment grew by 6 per cent.

Then the support. Published market rates in October 2026 run from a budget online tier, where EdFlik listed AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya AED 33 to 52, through a qualified subject tutor band where Unitors advertised IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, to a specialist examination-year band where TutorChase listed AED 270 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table reached AED 200 to 450 and above. In-home one-to-one sat at AED 180 to 350 in that table and up to AED 500 with independent tutors, with travel accounting for much of the difference. BartyED listed AED 650 at the premium end. Those are market figures from the providers named, not IB Gram's prices; ours are discussed in the consultation following a free trial lesson.

04

Two very different two-year arcs

Class 11 and 12 under CBSE and DP1 and DP2 cover the same two years of a student's life and are organised on opposite principles. CBSE concentrates the stake in a terminal board examination at the end of Class 12, with the syllabus known and the preparation strategy clear. The Diploma distributes the stake across internal assessments submitted through both years, an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and final examinations in the May session, and there is no public examination at the midpoint to tell a student where they stand.

That difference changes what good work looks like. A CBSE student optimises by covering the syllabus and drilling past papers, which is a rational strategy for a terminal examination. A Diploma student who uses the same strategy misses the internal deadlines that are already scoring, arrives at the Extended Essay late, and treats Theory of Knowledge as revisable when it is not. The effort is identical; the allocation is wrong.

The table below compares the two arcs across the dimensions that actually change behaviour. Read the internal assessment row and the independent research row together: they are where a quarter of every subject grade and up to three Diploma points live, and they are the two rows with no CBSE counterpart. Everything else in the comparison is a matter of degree.

The mid-point feedback row is the one that catches careful families. Under CBSE a parent can read a Class 11 performance against board-style papers and form a reasonable view of where a Class 12 result will land. In DP1 there is no such instrument, and the only available signals are school assessments and internal assessment marks that most parents have never seen scored before. Taking those marks seriously in the first year, rather than waiting for something that looks like a board examination, is the behavioural change that matters most.

05

Choosing the maths and science route after CBSE

  • Aptitude usually points to Analysis; the exploration is required either way
  • Fluency and independence are different; only fluency was tested at Class 10
  • Two Higher Level sciences means two investigations plus the Extended Essay in one window
  • Named degree requirements come first and should be read on the university's own pages

CBSE students arrive at the Group 5 decision with an unusual profile: strong procedural algebra, less exposure to open-ended modelling, and very little practice at writing mathematics up as an extended independent piece. On aptitude that profile usually points to Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, and in most cases that is the right route. The complication is the exploration, which both routes require and which is unfamiliar as a task rather than as mathematics, so the route choice does not avoid it.

Where the decision needs care is the level. Analysis at Higher Level adds formal proof, complex numbers, three-dimensional vectors and further calculus, plus a third paper of extended unprompted problem solving. A CBSE student who is fast and accurate may still find unprompted extended problems difficult, because fluency and independence are different things and only one of them was tested at Class 10. The useful diagnostic is an unfamiliar problem with no method given, not a test of what they already know.

On the sciences, the same pattern holds. Content transfers well and the scientific investigation does not transfer at all. A student taking two sciences at Higher Level is committing to two independently designed investigations in the same window as the Extended Essay, which is a workload question rather than an ability question. Families whose plan is medicine or engineering should check the named requirements for three or four specific programmes before fixing the combination, and verify each one on the institution's own admissions pages rather than from any summary.

06

The practical cost of changing school mid-stream

  • A cohort of several hundred becomes a cohort of a few dozen
  • CBSE's April academic year does not align with a September Diploma start
  • A calendar gap is a bridge opportunity or a wasted term; it is rarely neutral
  • Equivalency is a family process with the authority, never a provider's deliverable

Most CBSE to Diploma moves involve changing school, and the non-academic costs of that are real enough to belong in the decision. A student leaves a year group that may number several hundred for a Diploma cohort of a few dozen, in a different community, often with a longer commute. Friendships, the familiar commute, the teachers who know how the student works, and in many cases a sibling's school routine are all affected. None of that appears on a fee schedule and all of it affects the first term.

The academic calendars do not line up either. CBSE schools in the UAE run an Indian academic year beginning in April, while Diploma schools start in late August or early September. Depending on when the move happens that produces either a gap of several months or an overlap, and both need planning. A gap is an opportunity if it is used as a bridge and a liability if it is treated as a holiday. An overlap means a student finishing one year while a new school expects preparatory work.

There is also an administrative tail. Certificates from two systems accumulate, and at the end of school they have to satisfy the Ministry of Education's equivalency process if a UAE university place is in view. That process is completed by the family with the authority, not by a school or a tutoring provider, and no provider should present it as a service it delivers. The sourced requirements for the British and American tracks are published; for the Diploma, check moe.gov.ae or the emirate attestation authority directly, and start earlier than feels necessary, because attestation of documents from more than one system takes time.

07

Academic honesty, and why it matters more in this move than most

  • A quarter of each subject grade is work done outside the examination hall
  • Legitimate support is teaching, criteria explanation, marking and draft feedback
  • Supplying or completing assessed work is malpractice, and the student carries it
  • A price per assignment rather than per hour signals a different product

A student arriving from a terminal-examination system into a programme where a quarter of each grade comes from work done at home is meeting a new kind of risk. Under CBSE the examination hall supplies its own integrity controls. Under the Diploma, the student submits an internal assessment, an Extended Essay and a Theory of Knowledge essay with a declaration that the work is their own, countersigned by the school, and a breach is handled as malpractice with the consequence falling on the student.

The boundary for paid support is therefore worth stating before any work starts. A tutor may teach the underlying content, explain exactly what each assessment criterion rewards, discuss whether a proposed question is answerable within the word limit, mark practice work and give feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor may not supply text, hand over finished work, or edit a draft to the point where the writing is no longer the student's. Saying this explicitly is not legal decoration; it is a genuine difference between providers in this market.

It matters particularly here because families new to the Diploma have no basis for knowing where the line is, and because this market contains providers who cross it openly, including one selling completed internal assessments at a published price. A parent comparing options should read what is actually offered rather than how it is described: a service priced per assignment rather than per hour is selling a product that puts a Diploma at risk. IB Gram holds no board or regulator accreditation, offers no guarantee of a grade, and will say when a request falls on the wrong side of the line.

08

When the move pays, and when it does not

The honest answer depends on the student, and a page that says the Diploma is always the better choice is selling something. The move pays most clearly where a student is heading for undergraduate study outside India and has the appetite for independent written work, because the Diploma is read directly by admissions offices in the United Kingdom, North America, Europe and the UAE, and the breadth requirement is an advantage rather than a tax for a student with wide interests.

It pays least where a student's strength is narrow and deep, where the family's university plan is Indian, or where the student is two years from examinations and genuinely struggles with extended writing. Six subjects including a language and a humanities subject is not a kindness to a student who wants three sciences and nothing else, and the Diploma does not allow that concentration. In those cases the alternatives are worth naming: continuing with CBSE, moving to A-Levels where three subjects are permitted, or the Career-related Programme where a UAE school offers it.

The table below sets out the profiles we see most often, what the Diploma adds in each case, what the move costs, and a plain verdict. It is written to be disagreed with by a family who knows their child better than any page does, which is the point of writing it down rather than implying that one answer fits everyone. If none of the five rows describes your child, that is useful information too: it means the decision rests on something specific to them rather than on a general comparison between two systems, and it is worth an hour with a subject teacher before it is worth a deposit.

Where the UAE's Indian-curriculum communities sit

CBSE schooling in the UAE clusters in particular communities, and the Diploma schools families move into are frequently in different ones. The practical consequence is a longer commute or a school-bus route, which decides what time a tutoring session can start.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda, Dubai

One of the densest Indian-curriculum catchments in the country, with several large CBSE schools and long-established year groups. Families moving to a Diploma school usually move across the city, which adds commute time to a DP1 week that is already full.

Karama, Bur Dubai and Oud Metha

Older established Indian-curriculum schooling with very large cohorts. A student leaving a year group of several hundred for a Diploma cohort of a few dozen notices the change socially before they notice it academically, and that is worth talking about before the move.

International City and Discovery Gardens

Apartment communities with heavy school-bus dependence and long routes. Evening tutoring slots work better than late-afternoon ones here, and online delivery removes the second journey a home visit would require.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

A mix of Indian-curriculum and international schools within a short radius, which occasionally makes a move possible without a change of community. Where that is available it removes most of the logistical cost of the transition.

Al Nahda and Muwaileh, Sharjah

Large Indian-curriculum schools serving Sharjah and the Dubai border communities. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves curricula, programmes and assessment methods, so provision changes slowly and deliberately.

Mussafah, Khalifa City and Al Wahda, Abu Dhabi

The capital's Indian-curriculum provision, with Diploma schools concentrated elsewhere in the emirate. The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools, and a change of school here often means a materially longer journey.

Ajman and Umm Al Quwain

Private schools in both emirates are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education. Diploma provision is minimal, so families moving curriculum generally move emirate too, and online teaching is the practical way to get subject-specific support either side of that.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Write down the destination list first

Three or four specific programmes at specific universities. If they are Indian, the arithmetic for this move usually does not work. If they are British, American, European or UAE institutions, it often does, and the named entry requirements then shape the subject choices before any preference is expressed.

  2. 02

Get the Class 10 teachers' view on written work

Not the mathematics mark, which is usually reassuring. Ask the English and social science teachers how your child handles an extended answer with no set structure, because that is the ability the Diploma weights most heavily and the one CBSE reports least clearly.

  3. 03

A free trial on an unfamiliar task, not a familiar one

One online session with a problem or a text the student has not met, and no method given first. For a CBSE student this is the only reliable way to separate fluency, which they usually have, from independence, which the Diploma requires and Class 10 did not test.

  4. 04

Spend the bridge on the written components

Most families book mathematics and most CBSE students do not need it. The block that pays is English A, the Group 3 written component, and a working understanding of what an internal assessment and an Extended Essay actually require. The topic list is agreed before the first session.

  5. 05

Map DP1 deadlines before the first week

Internal assessments, the Extended Essay question and the Theory of Knowledge exhibition arrive in overlapping windows set by the school. Putting them on one page in August, counted backwards from submission, is the highest-value hour of preparation available and involves no subject content at all.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The move is priced, not just recommended

Fees, new capacity and every tutoring band appear in AED with the authority or provider that published them. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, which makes the arithmetic impossible for a UAE family from their pages.

What CBSE does well is stated as plainly as what it does not

Procedural mathematics, quantitative science and examination discipline are genuine strengths, and a transition page that treats the move as remediation misdirects the support budget to the subject where the student is already ahead.

The support goes where the gap is

For most students arriving from CBSE the widest gap is English A and the independent assessed components, not mathematics. We will say that in the first consultation even when a family has arrived asking for maths, because spending on the wrong subject is the most common waste in this move.

A verdict that includes not moving

Where the destination list is Indian, or where a student's strength is narrow and deep, the honest answer may be to stay with CBSE or to look at A-Levels instead. The comparison table on this page says so, because a page that recommends one answer to every profile is not advising.

Equivalency described, never performed

Certificates from two systems need the Ministry of Education's equivalency process if a UAE university place is in view. That is a process your family completes with the authority. This page states the sourced requirements and sends you to moe.gov.ae for the Diploma figure, which has not been read on a Ministry source.

Online delivery, so the specialist is reachable

Teaching is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE, which means a family in Ajman or Umm Al Quwain reaches a Diploma English A specialist rather than the nearest available tutor of any subject.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Is the IB Diploma harder than CBSE Class 11 and 12?+

Harder is the wrong comparison, because the two are organised on opposite principles. CBSE concentrates the stake in a terminal board examination with a known syllabus, which rewards coverage and drilling. The Diploma spreads it across internal assessments scored through both years, an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and final examinations, with no public examination at the midpoint. Most CBSE students find the content manageable and the independent assessed work genuinely difficult, because nothing in Class 10 asked them to decide a question, design a method and write it up against published criteria.

Will my child be behind in maths after CBSE Class 10?+

Usually the opposite. CBSE trains procedural algebra and trigonometry to a standard that frequently puts a student ahead of a mixed Diploma cohort in the first term, and the quantitative parts of physics and chemistry transfer well. The gap in mathematics is not content but the exploration, an independent piece of mathematical writing worth a fifth of the grade, and formal proof at Higher Level. Families who book mathematics support on arrival often find after a month that the money would have gone further in English A.

What does the whole CBSE to Diploma move cost in Dubai?+

Fees plus support, and this year the fee side is unusually stable: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27. On support, published October 2026 market rates ran from AED 45 to 65 an hour at EdFlik's budget tier, through AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, to AED 200 to 450 and above for specialist examination-year work in Bestimate's Dubai 2026 table, with TutorChase at AED 270. Those are market figures from the named providers, not IB Gram prices.

Is it better to move at the end of Class 8 or wait until Class 10?+

Earlier is materially easier where it is practical. Moving into MYP 4 or MYP 5 means a student meets criterion-based assessment and the Personal Project before Diploma stakes apply, so the unfamiliar kind of work is learned at low cost. A Class 10 leaver enters DP1 having skipped the Middle Years Programme entirely and arrives without five years of inquiry-based habits their classmates have. The content is not the issue in either case; the habit is, and buying two low-stakes years to build it is a good trade.

Which Group 2 language should a CBSE student take in the Diploma?+

Hindi B is frequently the strongest option, because years of prior study turn Group 2 from a problem into an advantage. The constraint is availability: not every UAE Diploma school teaches Hindi, and where it is absent the alternatives are another language from a standing start or a school-supported arrangement the Diploma coordinator must agree to. Settle this before the option form, because a Group 2 choice made from a standing start affects the whole workload picture and is one of the hardest subjects to change later.

Does the Indian school calendar make the move awkward?+

It does, and it is worth planning rather than discovering. CBSE schools in the UAE run an academic year beginning in April, while Diploma schools start in late August or early September. Depending on when the move happens, that leaves either a gap of some months or an overlap in which a student is finishing one year while a new school expects preparatory work. A gap used as a bridge is valuable; a gap treated as a holiday is the most common missed opportunity in this transition.

Can my child take three sciences in the Diploma like a CBSE science stream?+

Partly. The Diploma requires one subject from each of five groups, and the sixth can be a second subject from Groups 1 to 4 instead of an arts subject, so three sciences is structurally possible. What is not possible is dropping the language or the humanities subject, which a CBSE science stream effectively allows. Three Higher Level sciences also means three independently designed investigations in the same window as the Extended Essay. For a student who genuinely wants only sciences, A-Levels permit the concentration the Diploma does not.

How long does it take a CBSE student to settle into Diploma assessment?+

About a term for the content and most of DP1 for the assessment. Content settles quickly because the overlap is substantial and often favourable. The internal assessment, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are new kinds of task, and competence at them builds across the first year rather than in a few weeks. The practical implication is that a slow first term is normal and a slow first year is not, because internal assessment marks earned in DP1 are already counting towards the final grade.

Will a Diploma from a UAE school be recognised for Indian universities?+

Recognition arrangements for Indian admissions are set by the individual universities and by the national bodies that govern them, and they change, so the only reliable step is to check the specific institution's admissions page and any association of Indian universities guidance that applies. What this page will say is that a family whose plan is Indian undergraduate study should establish that before paying for the move, because the clearest return on a Diploma is in admissions systems that read it directly, and CBSE already serves the Indian route well.

My child memorises well and writes poorly. Is the Diploma a mistake?+

Not necessarily a mistake, but it is a known cost that should be budgeted. Diploma English A assesses unseen non-literary text and a spoken individual oral, and several Group 3 subjects assess sustained evaluative writing, so a student who writes poorly meets that demand in four or five of their six subjects. Eight to sixteen weeks of focused support in English alone is a realistic estimate. Where the family's plan allows it, A-Levels with three subjects avoiding extended writing is a legitimate alternative worth comparing properly.

What is the Extended Essay, and is there anything like it in CBSE?+

It is an independent research piece with a strict word limit, in a subject the student usually studies, chosen and managed by the student across DP1, contributing with Theory of Knowledge up to three points to the Diploma total. There is no CBSE equivalent, which is why it is the single most commonly underestimated component in this move. The research itself is rarely the difficulty. Scoping a question that can actually be answered in the words available, and holding a self-set timeline over months, are the real demands.

Can a tutor write parts of the internal assessment if my child is struggling?+

No, and a provider who agrees to is putting your child's Diploma at risk rather than helping. Internal assessments are submitted with the student's declaration of authorship and countersigned by the school, and a breach is handled as malpractice with the consequence falling on the student. Legitimate support is teaching the content, explaining exactly what each criterion rewards, discussing whether a question is answerable, and giving feedback on the student's own draft. This market contains providers selling completed assessments at a published price; that is a different product.

How does a smaller Diploma cohort affect my child?+

More than families expect. A student may leave an Indian-curriculum year group of several hundred for a Diploma cohort of a few dozen, which changes the social experience, the range of subject sets available, and the likelihood that a chosen Higher Level class runs at all. Smaller cohorts also mean less room for a level or subject change in DP1, because the receiving class may not exist. Ask the new school how many students are expected in each Higher Level class before the option form is signed.

Are there more Diploma places available in Dubai this year?+

Yes. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four following UK curricula and three offering the International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six new schools opened during 2025-26 with enrolment rising 6 per cent. Combined with KHDA's confirmation on 22 May 2026 that fees would not increase for 2026-27, a family moving curriculum in this cycle is doing so into a market with more capacity and a stable fee position than in several recent years. Availability still varies sharply by community and by subject.

Does the Diploma leave room for the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education periods?+

It has to, because they are required and they are not optional in either system. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. A CBSE student is already used to these periods, which is one part of the move that involves no adjustment at all.

Do the arithmetic before the deposit

This move is usually a good decision and it is never a free one. Write down three or four specific universities and read their entry requirements. Ask the Class 10 English teacher, not the mathematics teacher, how your child handles an extended answer with no set structure. Then book one trial lesson on an unfamiliar task with no method given, which is the only reliable way to separate fluency from independence. The session is online, one to one and free, and the written note afterwards will say where the support should actually go.
