IB Mock Exam Preparation in the UAE

IB mock exam preparation in the UAE is bought twice: once in the weeks before the papers, and again in the fortnight after the marked scripts come back. Most families fund only one of those windows, and usually the wrong one. This page sets out what a mock actually is, who owns the mark, what the UAE market charges for mock-season hours in AED, and which of those hours move a prediction. Lessons are one-to-one and delivered live online, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

The mock is a school exam that behaves like a public one

A mock exam in an IB school is written, timetabled, marked and graded by the school. The IB does not set it, does not see it and does not record it. That single fact explains most of what families find confusing about mock season in the UAE: why two Dubai schools can give the same subject a different paper in the same week, why a 5 at one school reads like a 4 at another, and why an IB mock result can be both the most useful piece of evidence a family will ever get and a poor predictor of the final grade.

What mock season does own is the prediction. Schools build an IB predicted grade from the mock mark, classwork, internal assessment drafts and the subject teacher's judgement, and those predictions reach universities months before the real papers are sat. A conditional offer from a British university, a place held at a Canadian or Australian institution, a scholarship shortlist at a UAE university: each of them reads a number that the mock largely produced. Mock season is an admissions event dressed as a revision event, which is why the families who treat it as a rehearsal tend to underfund it.

The cost question follows from that. Mock-season hours in the Emirates sell in two different shapes. Pre-mock hours are revision work: coverage, pacing, practice under timed conditions. Post-mock hours are diagnosis: reading the marked script, separating content gaps from technique gaps, and rebuilding a plan for the terms that are left. Pre-mock hours are bought by more households. Post-mock hours are, per hour spent, usually the better purchase, because the script tells a tutor exactly where the marks went and removes the guesswork a pre-mock plan has to carry.

Published market figures give the arithmetic its numbers. Rates in the UAE run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 200 to 450 and above for an IB or IGCSE specialist, and AED 650 at the premium end. Those are the providers' own published bands, read in October 2026, and they describe the market rather than an IB Gram price list. A post-mock script audit for one Higher Level subject is typically two to three hours of work. The same money spread thinly across six subjects in the fortnight before a paper buys very little in any of them.

This page is written for the parent deciding what to fund. It covers who owns each part of a mock result, where mock season falls in a UAE school year, how a mock mark becomes a prediction, what the market charges for each mock-season product, the difference between spending before and after the papers, and the things no budget buys at all. Everything IB Gram delivers to families in the Emirates is one-to-one over live video. Home visits are a service offered only in India, and nothing here should be read as an offer to send anyone to a UAE address.

At a glance

  • The school writes, marks and grades the mock; the IB neither sets it nor records the result
  • The prediction that reaches universities is built largely on the mock mark
  • Published UAE market rates run roughly AED 45 to 650 an hour depending on tier and format
  • A post-mock script audit for one Higher Level subject is usually two to three hours
  • Mocks in most UAE Diploma schools fall between late November and February
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video; home visits are offered only in India
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A mock looks different in each IB programme, and so does what a mock-season budget can sensibly buy. These are the three programmes UAE schools run, what the school is measuring in each, and what a family should expect the resulting mark to be used for once it is issued.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Diploma is where mock season carries real weight. Schools run a full timetabled set of IB Diploma mock papers, usually in the first year of DP2, marked against the IB mark schemes the department holds. The mark feeds the prediction, and the prediction feeds every university conversation that follows. Six subjects, three of them normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay running in parallel, means a DP2 mock fortnight is the most compressed assessment window of the two years.

Most UAE Diploma schools follow an August-to-June year and enter candidates for the May session, which puts the main mock window in late November or December and results in January. Schools on an April-to-March year, a pattern some Indian-curriculum-linked schools in Dubai and Sharjah retain for other sections, sit mocks on a different internal calendar. Ask the Diploma coordinator for the school's own mock dates rather than assuming the regional norm.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP has no external examination until the optional eAssessment at MYP 5, so a school's MYP mock is a practice run at on-screen examinations and criterion-based tasks rather than a dress rehearsal for a public paper. Marks come back against criteria A to D with a level from 1 to 8 in each, not as a percentage, and a parent reading an MYP mock report for the first time usually needs the criterion letters translated before the result means anything.

In the Emirates, MYP 5 is also the year many families decide between continuing to the Diploma and moving to IGCSE at a different school, and a mock result is often the evidence that decision rests on. Schools in Dubai and Abu Dhabi offering both routes publish internal thresholds for Higher Level entry. A mock below those thresholds is worth a conversation with the school before it becomes a subject-choice form.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

PYP runs no mock examinations. Assessment is continuous, and the programme closes with the PYP Exhibition rather than a paper. Families searching for mock preparation at this stage are almost always preparing for something else: an entrance assessment at a selective school, a CAT4 or similar baseline test, or the transition into MYP. Naming the actual assessment changes what useful preparation looks like, and it changes the cost.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four British curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places. That expansion is reshaping entrance-assessment pressure in the primary years across the emirate. A PYP family facing a selective assessment is buying test familiarisation, not mock exam preparation, and the two are priced and planned differently.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mock papers punish different things in different subjects, and a script audit is only worth paying for if the tutor knows which failure the paper is designed to expose. These are the subjects UAE families most often bring to us after mock results land, with what the marked script usually shows.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Mock scripts in AA lose marks to unjustified steps rather than wrong answers. Method marks go missing where working is compressed, and the Higher Level non-calculator paper exposes algebraic fluency that a calculator has been hiding all term. The toolkit and the exploration run alongside, so a December mock often arrives mid-exploration.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

AI scripts fail on modelling and interpretation, not on computation. Students produce a correct regression and then write nothing about what it means in context, which is where the marks sit. Graphical calculator technique is examinable in itself, and a mock is usually the first time a student discovers their own calculator is slowing them down.

Physics

HL and SL

The mock separates students who can recall a relationship from students who can apply it to an unfamiliar situation. Data-analysis questions on uncertainty and graph gradients are routinely left half-answered, and extended-response questions lose marks for describing a phenomenon when the command term asked for an explanation.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics dominate the lost marks on a Chemistry mock, with Higher Level students losing most on multi-step calculations where one rounding decision propagates. Scripts also show a pattern of unused data booklet pages: students who never practised with it under timed conditions do not reach for it in the hall.

Biology

HL and SL

Biology mocks reward precise terminology and punish approximate description. Marks are lost where a student writes around a term instead of using it, and in data-based questions where the answer restates the trend rather than accounting for it. Higher Level scripts show the extra load of the additional Higher Level material most clearly in timing.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams carry marks, and incomplete axes or unlabelled shifts cost them silently. Paper 1 essays lose marks on evaluation rather than theory, and real-world examples are either absent or generic. Higher Level policy and calculation questions need practice under time, which a mock usually proves has not happened yet.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study papers reward students who use the stimulus material and penalise those who answer from textbook theory alone. Mock scripts commonly show tool-based questions where the tool is applied correctly but never linked back to the business in the case, which is exactly where the higher mark bands begin.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 guided analysis is where mock marks disappear: students summarise the text instead of analysing how it produces meaning. Paper 2 comparative essays lose structure under time. The Individual Oral and the Higher Level essay sit outside the mock, so a mock grade is a partial picture of the subject.

History

HL and SL

Source-based questions have a mark allocation most students have never counted, and mock scripts show time spent unevenly across it. Essays lose marks for narrative rather than argument, and Higher Level regional-option answers show the thinnest content coverage, because that material is often taught last.

Psychology

HL and SL

Mock scripts show studies recalled without the detail the question needed, and evaluation points that name a limitation without explaining its effect on the conclusion. Research-methods questions in the Higher Level paper are frequently the lowest-scoring section on an otherwise competent script.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Mock season sells three genuinely different products, and conflating them is how families end up paying weekly-programme money for diagnostic work or diagnostic money for a revision recap. Each of the three below is delivered one-to-one over live video, and each answers a different question.

Post-mock script audit

Two to three hours on one marked paper, with the script and the mark scheme on a shared screen. Every lost mark is classified: content not known, content known but not retrieved under time, command term misread, working not shown, or question misallocated against its mark tariff. The output is a written plan naming the topics and the techniques, in the order they should be addressed across the remaining terms.

  • Needs the marked script, not a summary of the grade
  • Produces a classified error list and a ranked plan
  • Usually the highest-value hours of the whole season
  • Best booked within a fortnight of results being issued

Pre-mock timed practice block

Six to ten hours in the weeks before the paper, aimed at pacing and question selection rather than new content. A student who knows the material but cannot finish the paper gains more here than from any amount of recap. A student who has not covered the syllabus gains very little, and should be told so before the block is booked rather than after.

  • Works on timing, question order and mark-per-minute discipline
  • Does not teach a term's uncovered content at useful depth
  • Stops two or three days before the paper, not the night before
  • Priced by the hour at market online rates

Mock-to-final weekly programme

One session a week from January through to the exam term, built on the audit plan rather than a textbook order. Twelve to sixteen hours per subject is the usual commitment, which for a family funding three subjects is the single largest line in a mock-season budget. Progress is reviewed against the school's own next assessment, not against the tutor's impression.

  • Built from the script audit, so the first session starts on evidence
  • Reviewed against the school's next internal assessment
  • Can be paused for internal assessment deadlines and school trips
  • Scheduled to Gulf Standard Time, including after-Iftar slots in Ramadan

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What a mock exam is in an IB school, and who owns every part of the mark

An IB mock is a school assessment from first page to final grade. The department chooses or writes the paper, often assembling it from released IB papers it holds legitimately or from a commercial question bank. The school sets the date, runs the room, marks the scripts, picks the boundaries that turn a raw mark into a number from 1 to 7, and decides what goes in the report. No part of that process passes through the IB, and no mock mark appears on any certificate.

That matters for two practical reasons. The first is comparability: a 5 awarded by one Dubai school and a 5 awarded by another are not the same measurement, because the papers differ and the boundaries differ. Parents comparing notes across a community WhatsApp group are comparing two different tests. The second is appeal: there is no external route to challenge a mock grade, because there is no external body involved. The only conversation available is with the department that set it.

The one output that does leave the building is the prediction. Predicted grades are submitted by the school and read by universities, and mock exam marking is the largest single input to them in most departments. So the honest description of mock season is this: the grade itself is disposable, the marked script is valuable evidence, and the prediction is the thing with consequences. A family funding mock exam preparation should be clear which of the three they are trying to influence, because the three need different work and different money.

Mock season in a UAE school year, and the dates that belong to the school

The UAE Diploma calendar is reasonably uniform. Most schools run an August-to-June year, enter candidates for the May session, and place the main mock window in late November or December so that scripts can be marked over the winter break and results issued in January. A second mock, or a set of subject-level assessments standing in for one, often lands in February. Schools on an April-to-March year sit the sequence on a different internal timetable entirely.

None of those dates are set by the IB, which is exactly why they vary between schools in the same community. The IB owns the examination session; the school owns the mock, the internal deadlines around it and the date predictions are finalised. For planning purposes this is good news: mock dates are knowable months ahead by asking the Diploma coordinator, and they are the dates a tutoring budget should actually be built around.

We do not publish IB examination or results dates on this page. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so every date in this project would be second-hand, and a wrong examination date is the one error on a planning page that can cost a family something real. Confirm the session window and the results date with your school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org directly. Cambridge and Pearson publish their own key dates, which is why the IGCSE side of a household's calendar can be pinned down with more confidence than the IB side.

The prediction is what mock season is really selling

An IB predicted grade is the school's formal estimate of the final result, submitted to the IB and used by universities to decide what offer to make. Departments differ in how they weigh the inputs, but a Diploma mock sat a term before predictions are finalised is almost always the heaviest piece of evidence on the table. It is the only data point produced under examination conditions, and it is the only one a department can defend to a parent with a script in front of them.

This is where mock exam preparation stops being an academic question and becomes a financial one. The gap between a predicted 5 and a predicted 6 can be the gap between an offer and a rejection at a competitive course, and the work that closes it has to happen before predictions are submitted, not after. Families who discover the mechanism in March have already missed the window the mock opened in December.

What follows is a realistic map, not a promise. No tutor can commit to moving a grade, and any provider who offers to is making a claim they cannot stand behind. What a tutor can do is tell you, from the marked script, which of the lost marks are recoverable in the time available and roughly how many hours each class of error usually takes to fix. That is the information a spending decision needs, and it is the information the mock has just handed you free of charge.

What mock exam preparation costs in the UAE, product by product

  • Rate sources: the provider pages named above plus Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, all read October 2026
  • Monthly packages seen in this market: AED 799 a month online for eight sessions; AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour visits
  • Ask whether a quoted rate is per hour or per session, and whether a 90-minute session is billed as 1.5 hours
  • Ask what the price includes: marking time between sessions, a written plan, or neither

Three of the six most visible competitor pages for this cluster publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, a currency no UAE family transacts in. The figures below are the market's own published numbers in AED, read in October 2026, attributed to the provider that published them. They are not IB Gram's prices. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson, because the honest quote depends on the subject, the level and how many hours the script audit says are needed.

The useful move is to stop comparing hourly rates and start comparing products. A mock exam preparation cost of AED 250 an hour means one thing for a diagnostic audit that runs for three hours and produces a written plan, and something quite different for an open-ended weekly arrangement that runs for two terms. Multiply the rate by the realistic number of hours before judging whether it is expensive, and compare the total against what the subject is worth to the application.

Two figures are worth holding in mind while reading the table. The permit that allows an individual to tutor privately in the UAE is issued free of charge for two years, so nothing in a rate reflects a licensing cost. And KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27 under the emirate's economic incentives package. School fees were held; tutoring rates were not, and nothing obliges them to follow.

Before the mock or after it: where the same money does more work

Take a household with AED 2,000 to spend on one Diploma subject and a mock four weeks away. There are five places that money can go, and they are not equivalent. The pre-mock options buy work planned on incomplete information: the student's own account of what they find hard, which is reliably wrong in at least one direction, and a teacher's general comment. The post-mock options buy work planned on a marked script, which is the only document in the whole process that says precisely where the marks went.

Spending after the mock also costs nothing in opportunity. The mock grade itself is already recorded and cannot be changed, so the hours are aimed entirely at the final result and the prediction conversation that precedes it. Spending before the mock competes with the student's own revision time in the fortnight when that time is scarcest, and a badly timed block of lessons in that window can reduce the mark it was bought to raise.

The pre-mock case is strongest in one specific situation: a named, already-diagnosed content gap, where a term of work was missed through illness, a school move or a late subject change. There the tutor is not guessing, the gap is known, and four weeks is enough to close a defined piece of syllabus. Outside that case, the better sequence for most UAE families is a modest pre-mock block for pacing, then the real money held back for the fortnight after the scripts come home.

Inside a post-mock script audit: what three hours should produce

  • Bring the marked script, the mark scheme if the school released it, and the teacher's comment sheet
  • Expect the five error categories named and counted, with marks attached to each
  • Expect an explicit statement of what cannot be recovered before the session
  • Expect the plan in writing, so the next tutor or the student can work from it

A script audit is a specific piece of work, and a family paying for it should know what to expect back. The tutor reads the marked paper alongside the mark scheme and classifies every lost mark into one of five categories. Content not known is the first and the most expensive to fix. Content known but not retrieved under time is the second, and it responds to practice rather than teaching. Command term misread is the third, and it is often the cheapest fix on the whole script.

The fourth category is working not shown, where the student had the right idea and the marker could not award it. On a Mathematics or Physics script this is frequently the single largest block of recoverable marks, and it is a habit rather than a knowledge gap. The fifth is mark-tariff misallocation: eighteen minutes spent on a four-mark question and six on a twelve-mark one. A student can lose a grade boundary to that alone while knowing the entire syllabus.

The output is a written plan that ranks the categories by marks available against hours required, names the topics in the order they should be revisited, and states plainly which of the lost marks are not recoverable in the time left. That last line is the part families value most and the part marketing copy usually omits. An audit that reports only good news has not been done properly, and a plan with no stated cost in hours is not a plan.

07

Six reasons a mock grade and a final grade diverge

  • Syllabus coverage at mock time is partial; the final paper examines all of it
  • Mock boundaries are chosen by the school, and are often deliberately severe
  • Internal assessment marks are estimates at mock stage, moderated marks at the end
  • Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are invisible to a mock but count in the Diploma
  • A department marking in a fortnight is not a moderated international marking process
  • Five months of teaching and maturity separate the two sittings

Families treat the mock as a forecast and are then surprised in both directions. The divergence is structural rather than mysterious. The first reason is coverage: at mock time, most Diploma courses have not finished the syllabus, so the paper tests a subset and the real paper does not. The second is boundaries: a school picks its own, often deliberately severe ones, to produce a useful shock. A mock sat against harsh boundaries understates where a student actually stands.

The third reason is internal assessment. By mock season an exploration or investigation may be a draft, so its contribution to the mock grade is an estimate, while in the final grade it is a moderated mark with a fixed weighting. The fourth is Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, which sit outside the mock entirely and carry points of their own in the Diploma. A mock cannot see them, so it cannot model the total.

The fifth is marking: a school department marking its own students' papers in a fortnight is doing a different job from a moderated international marking operation, and consistency differs accordingly. The sixth is the student: five months separate the two sittings, and a DP2 cohort in February is not the cohort that sat in November. Taken together, these six explain why a mock is best read as a diagnostic instrument and worst read as a prediction of the final number. A student who sat a severe paper on a partly-taught syllabus in November is not being measured against the thing they will actually sit, and a family that reads the mock grade as a forecast is budgeting against the wrong number.

08

Who answers for the school that sets the mock

Five separate authorities regulate private schools across the seven emirates, and parents frequently assume one of them has oversight of mock examinations. None does. The authorities license schools, inspect them, and in several emirates approve fees, curricula and assessment methods at the institutional level. The content of an internal mock paper, the boundaries applied to it and the prediction that follows are departmental decisions inside the school.

Knowing which authority answers for your school is still useful. It tells you where the published inspection report lives, who approves a fee increase, and which body to escalate to if a school's internal assessment practice looks wrong at a level beyond the department. In Dubai that is KHDA, which oversees the quality of private education in the emirate. In Abu Dhabi and Al Ain it is ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools.

One further point belongs here, because it affects who may legally coach your child through mock season. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you.

Mock-script work over live video against a tutor who travels

A fair comparison has to be made on the work, not on a slogan. Reading a marked script with a student is a document-centred activity: the paper needs to be visible to both people, annotated as the conversation moves, and kept afterwards. A shared screen with a photographed or scanned script does that at least as well as a paper on a table, and it does one thing a table cannot, which is save the annotated version for the student, the next session and the final revision term.

The market also prices the two differently, and mock season magnifies the gap because a family is usually funding more than one subject at once. Published UAE in-home rates run from roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel priced into the number, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. Across three subjects and a dozen hours each, that difference is the whole budget for a fourth subject.

The decisive factor is the pool. A Higher Level Physics script needs someone who has taught and marked that paper, not whoever is free within a twenty-minute drive of your community. An online IB tutor in the UAE is matched on the subject, the level and the Gulf Standard Time slot, which is why a family in Al Ain or Fujairah can book the same specialist as a family in Jumeirah. To be plain about it: IB Gram delivers one-to-one online tuition to families in the Emirates, and offers home visits only in India.

What a mock-season budget cannot buy, and the line a tutor will not cross

  • A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on a student's own draft; nothing more
  • No grade, score or improvement is promised on any page of this site
  • Syllabus documents, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are referenced and linked, never supplied
  • Equivalency, attestation and access arrangements are handled by the authority or the school, not by us

No amount of money buys a grade, and any provider willing to promise one has told you something important about how they operate. A tutor cannot change a recorded mock mark, cannot influence the boundaries a department chose, cannot alter a prediction once it is submitted, and cannot compress two terms of missing content into a fortnight. A provider who agrees with all four of those and then quotes you a number is quoting honestly.

There is also a firm boundary around assessed work. Under IB academic honesty rules, an internal assessment, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay or Personal Project must be the student's own work, and the coordinator signs a declaration to that effect. A tutor may teach the skills, discuss the method, question the reasoning and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor must not supply text, rewrite sections to a finished standard, or hand over assessed material. One provider in this market openly sells finished internal assessments; that is a malpractice trigger for the student, and the student carries the consequence, not the seller.

Two further things sit outside what tutoring can deliver. Ministry of Education equivalency and attestation is a process families complete through the official channel, and no tutoring provider performs or guarantees it. And access arrangements in examinations, such as extra time, are applied for by the school's examinations officer against evidence, on the board's own timetable. A tutor can tell you the application exists and that it has a deadline; the school is the only party who can file it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across the UAE

Mock dates, term calendars and the authority that answers for the school all change as you move between emirates. These notes cover what actually differs for a mock-season plan, rather than listing places a tutor could drive to, because sessions are delivered online.

Dubai

The densest Diploma cohort in the country and the tightest mock calendar, with most schools examining in late November or December and issuing results in January. Families searching for mock exam preparation in Dubai are usually working to a predicted-grade conversation already scheduled for the spring term, so the diagnosis window is short.

Abu Dhabi

Diploma schools here sit mocks on a similar November-to-December pattern, but the capital's traffic and the spread between Khalifa City, Saadiyat and Al Reem make evening scheduling the real constraint. An online slot after the school run removes the drive from both sides of the lesson, which matters in a fortnight with no spare evenings.

Sharjah

A smaller IB cohort alongside a large British and Indian curriculum sector, and an emirate whose authority approves curricula and assessment methods as well as fees. Households here frequently have one IB candidate and one IGCSE candidate sitting internal examinations in overlapping weeks, which changes how a single budget has to be split.

Al Ain

Under the same Abu Dhabi authority as the capital, with fewer Diploma schools and a correspondingly thin local pool of Higher Level specialists. For a subject such as Physics HL or Economics HL, an online match is often the only route to a tutor who has actually taught the paper being audited.

Ajman

Private schools here are supervised federally rather than by an emirate authority, and the IB cohort is small. Mock calendars follow each school's own internal planning, so the dates a neighbour in Dubai quotes are not transferable. Confirm the window with the school before booking any block of hours.

Ras Al Khaimah

Regulated by the emirate's Department of Knowledge, which approves fees, curricula and assessment methods. Returned zero mentions across the researched competitor pages for this query, which tells you how much attention the northern emirates get. Online delivery makes the local tutor count irrelevant to what a family can book.

Fujairah

Supervised by the federal Ministry of Education, with the smallest IB presence of the seven emirates. Travel between Fujairah and the western emirates rules out any visiting arrangement for a weekly session, so a mock-to-final programme here is an online commitment or it is nothing.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai

Dubai carries the largest Diploma cohort in the country, and its schools set their own mock papers and their own boundaries. Two students in neighbouring communities can sit different papers in the same subject in the same week and come away with grades that are not comparable. Students we support attend schools including those below.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Deira International School
  • Uptown International School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Capital-region Diploma schools answer to the Department of Education and Knowledge, which licenses and accredits private schools in the emirate. Mock timetables are set internally and often cluster in the same fortnight across several schools, which is why specialist availability tightens sharply in December.

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Sharjah and the northern emirates

A smaller IB cohort spread across several authorities, with many households running an IB candidate and an IGCSE candidate at once. Mock weeks for the two boards rarely align, so the practical question is which child's internal examinations get the funded hours first.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Australian International School Sharjah
  • Sharjah English School
  • RAK Academy

Schools are named here only to describe the context UAE families work inside; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or partnership with any school, school group or examination board named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked script, not the grade

A number tells a tutor almost nothing; a marked paper tells them everything. Photograph or scan every page, including the ones with no comments on them, and send the teacher's feedback sheet alongside. If the school has not released the script, ask for it. Most departments will share it with a parent who asks directly.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson on the weakest paper

The first session is free and runs on the real material rather than a sample worksheet. The student works through two or three questions from their own script while the tutor watches how the answer gets built. That half hour usually identifies the failure pattern faster than any amount of discussion about it.

  3. 03

Match on the subject, the level and the hour

Matching runs on three things: the exact subject and level, the component the script says is weakest, and a slot that works in Gulf Standard Time. Evening and weekend slots are the ones mock-season families need, and they are the ones that fill first in December and January. Book the slot before the results arrive if the dates are known.

  4. 04

The audit, then the written plan

Two or three hours produce a classified error list and a ranked plan: what to fix, in what order, and how many hours each class of error usually takes. The plan states what is not recoverable in the time left. A family can act on it with us, with the school, or with another tutor entirely.

  5. 05

Weekly hours, reviewed against the school's own next assessment

From January the work runs weekly against the plan, and progress is judged by the school's next internal assessment rather than by anyone's impression. If the next assessment shows no movement, the plan changes or the hours stop. Sessions pause for internal assessment deadlines and school trips without losing the block.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The script is the brief

Lessons start from your child's own marked mock paper and the mark scheme, not from a textbook chapter order. That is the difference between tutoring aimed at a syllabus and tutoring aimed at the marks a specific student actually lost in a specific paper.

Rates quoted with their source and date

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, with the month it was read. Three of the six most visible pages in this cluster publish no price at all. A family cannot budget against silence, so we publish the market and quote our own only after a trial.

Specialist by subject, not by proximity

A Higher Level Chemistry script needs a Chemistry teacher who has marked that paper. Online matching means the pool is every available specialist in your Gulf Standard Time slot rather than the handful living within a short drive, which matters most in Al Ain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah.

The honesty boundary is written down

What a tutor may and may not do with an internal assessment, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay is stated on the page rather than left to interpretation. Teaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own draft: yes. Producing assessed material: never, in any subject.

Online, one-to-one, timed to Gulf Standard Time

Every session is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, including after-Iftar slots during Ramadan and weekend mornings in mock season. Home visits are a service offered only in India, and that is stated plainly on every UAE page rather than buried in a footnote.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Who writes the IB mock papers my child sits at a UAE school?+

The school does. A subject department either writes the paper or assembles it from released IB papers and commercial question banks it holds legitimately. The school also sets the date, runs the room, marks the scripts and chooses the grade boundaries. The IB is not involved at any stage and never sees the result. This is why two schools in the same Dubai community can examine the same subject in the same week with different papers and different boundaries, and why comparing a mock grade across schools tells you very little.

What does mock exam preparation cost for one IB subject in the UAE?+

It depends entirely on which product you are buying. Published UAE market rates run AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor and AED 200 to 450 and above at specialist tier, read October 2026. A post-mock script audit is two to three hours, so AED 400 to 1,350 per subject. A pre-mock revision block of six to ten hours lands between AED 900 and 3,000. A weekly programme from January to the exam term is twelve to sixteen hours. Those are market figures, not IB Gram prices; we quote after a free trial lesson.

Is it better value to pay for help before the mocks or after the results?+

After, for most students. Before the mock, a tutor is planning on the student's own account of what they find difficult, which is reliably wrong in at least one direction. After the mock, the marked script says exactly where the marks went, so the same hours are spent on diagnosed problems instead of suspected ones. The exception is a student with a known content gap from illness, a school move or a late subject change, where four weeks of defined teaching before the paper is worth more than diagnosis afterwards.

Does a poor mock grade change the prediction a UAE school sends to universities?+

Usually yes, because the mock is normally the heaviest single input to a predicted grade. It is the only assessment sat under examination conditions and the only one a department can defend to a parent with a script on the table. Classwork, internal assessment drafts and teacher judgement also feed in, and departments weigh them differently. The practical consequence is that work aimed at the prediction has to happen between mock results and the date predictions are finalised, which in most UAE schools is a window of a few weeks in January and February.

How long does a post-mock script audit on one paper actually take?+

Two to three hours for one subject, including the tutor's reading time before the session. The paper is read against the mark scheme and every lost mark is classified into one of five types: content not known, content known but not retrieved under time, command term misread, working not shown, or time misallocated against the mark tariff. The session then produces a written plan ranking those categories by marks available against hours required, and stating which marks are not recoverable in the time remaining. A Higher Level paper with three components can take the full three hours.

Our daughter scored a 4 in her Higher Level mock. What is realistically movable before the final papers?+

A 4 that was close to a 5 usually has two causes on the script: one or two topics that are genuinely not known, and a whole-paper technique problem affecting every question. Both are addressable across two terms, and the technique element is often the larger block of marks. In our experience that combination takes somewhere between sixteen and twenty-four hours on the subject, with the first three spent on the audit. Nobody can commit to a grade, and any provider who does is promising something they cannot control. What the script can tell you is where the available marks are.

Do UAE schools mark mocks to the same grade boundaries the IB uses?+

No, and most do not try to. A department picks boundaries from an earlier session, or sets its own, frequently choosing severe ones deliberately so that a mock produces a useful shock in November rather than a comfortable one. IB boundaries are set per session after marking, so no school can know them in advance. This means a mock grade understates or overstates a student's position depending on the department's choices, and it is one of the main reasons a mock and a final grade diverge.

Can we fund mock preparation for three subjects without the cost running away?+

Yes, by buying audits across all three and hours in only one or two. Three script audits at specialist tier is roughly AED 1,200 to 4,000 at published market rates, and it produces a ranked list of where the recoverable marks actually are across the whole Diploma. Very often two of the three subjects turn out to need technique work the student can do alone with a checklist, and the third needs real teaching hours. Buying the diagnosis first is what stops a budget from being spread evenly and thinly across six subjects.

When do IB mocks usually take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi schools?+

Most Diploma schools in both emirates run an August-to-June year and place the main mock window in late November or December, so scripts are marked over the winter break and results are issued in January. A second mock, or subject assessments standing in for one, often falls in February. None of those dates are set by the IB, so they vary between schools in the same community. Ask the Diploma coordinator for your school's own mock calendar; it is knowable months ahead and it is the calendar a tutoring budget should be built around.

Is a mock result worth paying to have re-marked by someone outside the school?+

There is no formal route to challenge a mock grade, because no external body is involved, so a private re-mark changes nothing on the record. What a second reading of the script does buy is information: a specialist reading the paper against the mark scheme can show where marks were available and not awarded, which is useful evidence for a conversation with the department. Frame it as a diagnostic audit rather than an appeal. If the aim is genuinely to contest marking, the conversation belongs with the subject teacher and the coordinator.

Should we spend on mock preparation now or save the money for the final term?+

Split it, with the larger share in the window straight after mock results. The final six weeks can protect pacing and drill the highest-weighted paper, but they cannot build coverage that was never there, and they compete with the student's own revision time. The January to February window has neither of those problems: the plan is evidence-based, the prediction has not yet been finalised, and there is enough term left for new teaching to land. Holding everything back to the exam term is the most common budgeting error we see in UAE households.

What should we ask the Diploma coordinator once mock results come out?+

Five questions. Which boundaries were used, and from which session. Whether the paper covered the full syllabus or only the taught portion. What weight the mock carries in the prediction for each subject. When predictions are finalised and submitted. And whether the marked scripts can come home. The last one matters most, because without the script a family is working from a number. Departments generally release scripts to a parent who asks directly, and the paper is the only document that says where the marks actually went.

Does mock preparation do anything about internal assessment marks that are already banked?+

Not for work already submitted; a submitted internal assessment is finished. Where a draft is still in progress, a tutor can teach the criteria, discuss the method and give feedback on what the student has written, and the student then revises their own work. A tutor must not supply text or bring a piece to a finished standard, because an internal assessment has to be the student's own work and the coordinator signs a declaration to that effect. One provider in this market sells completed assessments outright; the student carries the malpractice consequence, not the seller.

Is group mock revision at a Dubai centre cheaper than one-to-one hours?+

Per hour, almost always. Centres quote per head for groups of two to four, and that sits below one-to-one rates. The trade is that group work cannot run on your child's own marked script, which is the one asset mock season hands you. A workable combination is a one-to-one audit to find the specific lost marks, then group hours for the content that is common to the whole cohort. Ask the centre how many students are in the group and whether the hours are per student or per session before comparing anything.

My son freezes under timed conditions rather than on the content. Can mock work fix that?+

It is one of the more tractable problems on a script, and it shows up clearly in the marking pattern: strong early answers, then a collapse in the final third, or eighteen minutes on a four-mark question. The fix is structural rather than psychological in most cases, built from mark-per-minute discipline, a fixed question order and practice at full paper length rather than in question sets. Six to ten hours of timed work usually changes the pattern. A student whose difficulty is genuine examination anxiety needs the school's counsellor as well, not a tutor alone.

What happens if no specialist is free for our subject during UAE mock season?+

December and January are the tightest weeks of the year for Diploma subjects, and for a narrow Higher Level option there may be nobody available in your Gulf Standard Time slot. We say so rather than substituting a generalist. The options then are a different slot, including early mornings before school, a later start once the first wave of mock-season bookings clears, or a tutor based in India teaching online at a UAE-friendly hour. Whichever applies, you are told which before any hours are booked.

Start with the script, then decide what to fund

Mock season hands a UAE family one genuinely valuable document, and it is not the report card. It is the marked paper. Send it in, take the free trial lesson on whichever component looks weakest, and get a written audit that names the recoverable marks, the hours each class of error needs, and the marks that are gone. Then decide what to spend, with evidence in front of you instead of a rate card. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, and nothing on this page is an offer to send a tutor to a UAE address.
