IGCSE Home Tutor in The Lakes

Before you hire an IGCSE home tutor in The Lakes, settle one question: which board and which tier your child is entered for. Cambridge 0580 Extended and Pearson 4MA1 Higher are different papers with different grade ceilings, and a tutor working from the wrong one wastes every hour. IB Gram teaches Lakes families one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, starting from the syllabus code on your child's own entry sheet, with a free trial lesson first.

  • Teaching starts from your child's own syllabus code and tier
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel papers taught by board, not interchangeably

IB & IGCSE in The Lakes

The board and tier question comes before the tutor question

Most Lakes families searching for IGCSE help start with a subject and a worry. The more useful starting point is a piece of paper: the examination entry sheet or the school's subject confirmation, which carries the board and the syllabus code. Cambridge Mathematics is 0580 and splits into Core papers graded C to G and Extended papers graded A* to E. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1 and splits into Foundation, which caps at grade 5, and Higher, which runs 9 to 4 with an allowed 3. Those are four different jobs, not one.

The same fork runs through every subject. Cambridge Physics is 0625 and offers a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper depending on what the centre enters. Pearson Physics is 4PH1 with practical skills assessed inside the written papers. Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences is 0654, a double award covering three sciences in two grades, and a student sitting it is doing something quite different from a student taking 0610, 0620 and 0625 separately. A tutor who has not asked which of these applies is about to teach the wrong content confidently.

What that has to do with The Lakes is supply. The schools Emirates Living children attend do not all use the same board, and several split boards by department - Edexcel for mathematics, Cambridge for sciences, in the same Year 11. Inside a twenty-minute drive of Hattan or Maeen the chance of finding an available tutor who teaches your exact code, at your exact tier, in all the subjects you need, is low. That is the practical reason this page argues for online delivery rather than a geographic search.

Say the position plainly, since the search phrase invites the opposite reading. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE - home visits are a service offered only in India, and nobody arrives at a Lakes address under any arrangement sold here. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the paper open on a shared screen and marked while you watch. The in-home market exists and is priced at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour; this page prints those figures rather than hiding them.

You can check the prices yourself, and that is the point of printing them. Three of the Dubai tutoring pages researched for this project publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars rather than dirhams. The figures used here are read from the providers' own pages and from a 2026 Dubai rate study, in October 2026, and attributed line by line in the table below. Open any of those pages and compare. A rate you can verify is worth more than a rate you are asked to accept.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A Lakes teenager on the British route meets three examination systems between 14 and 18, and the IB sits alongside them as the alternative. Here is what each is, and what it demands of a tutoring plan.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Two-year courses with syllabus codes on every paper - 0580 Mathematics, 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry, 0625 Physics, 0500 First Language English. Most syllabuses are tiered into Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C and Extended reaching A*. Examinations run in a June series and a November series, and centres are allocated to one of six administrative zones with timetables that differ by zone.

Cambridge is the most common board in the schools Lakes children attend, and the zone rule matters practically: Cambridge states that the correct version of the timetable for your centre's zone must be used and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask the examinations officer which zone your school sits in before building a revision calendar.

4XX1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The other major international route, coded 4MA1 Mathematics A, 4PH1 Physics, 4CH1 Chemistry, 4BI1 Biology, 4EA1 English Language A. Grading runs 9 to 1. Mathematics A is tiered Foundation and Higher; the sciences assess practical skills inside the written papers rather than through a separate practical examination. Series run in May/June and November each year.

Pearson's November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so a revision plan should link the live official timetable rather than a restated date.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level and AS Level

The two-year route most Lakes students take after IGCSE, with three or four subjects studied in depth. Pearson's modular structure allows assessment in stages while Cambridge and others are largely linear, and that difference changes how a Year 12 tutoring plan is built. Grades run A* to E.

The Ministry of Education equivalency route for British-curriculum students asks for one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade, alongside the five IGCSE or GCSE subjects. That is the rule that makes IGCSE grades a regulatory matter and not only a school one.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

The alternative at 16 for students at the IB schools near Emirates Living. Six subjects at Higher and Standard Level plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, examined in the May session for UAE schools. The step up from IGCSE is in breadth and in independent coursework rather than in content difficulty alone.

A Lakes student holding Extended IGCSE grades in mathematics and two sciences has the usual prerequisites for Higher Level sciences in the Diploma. A student who sat Core papers generally does not, and discovering that in Year 11 rather than Year 10 is the most expensive sequencing mistake available on this route.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Syllabus codes first, because the code decides the papers. These are the IGCSE subjects Lakes families ask about most, with both boards' codes and the component where marks are usually lost.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended · Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and Higher

Cambridge Core sits on papers graded C to G and Extended on papers graded A* to E; Pearson Foundation caps at 5 while Higher runs 9 to 4. Marks are lost in the multi-step problems at the end of each paper, in surds and algebraic fractions, and in failing to show working that would have earned method marks.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Cambridge centres enter either a practical test or the alternative-to-practical written paper, so ask which. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the theory papers. Electricity circuits and the moments and momentum topics carry most of the lost marks, usually through unit errors and unstated assumptions rather than missing content.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Qualitative analysis, mole calculations and organic reaction conditions are the three reliable mark-losers. Students who can recite the reactivity series still lose marks writing ionic equations and stating observations precisely. Practice has to be written and marked, not read.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

Content volume is the problem rather than difficulty. Command terms do the real work: describe, explain and compare each demand a different answer shape, and a well-informed student can lose half a question's marks by answering the wrong one. Fast marks sit in data interpretation and in graph work.

Co-ordinated and Combined Sciences

Cambridge 0654 Double Award · Cambridge 0653 · Pearson 4SD0

A single course covering biology, chemistry and physics, reported as two grades for the double award. Students sitting it are often tutored from separate-science material by mistake, which adds content they will never be examined on. Confirm the code before the first lesson; this is the most common misdiagnosis in Dubai IGCSE tutoring.

English Language

Cambridge 0500 First Language · Cambridge 0510 ESL · Pearson 4EA1

Directed writing and the reading comprehension question carry the marks and both are technique-led. Students lose marks for retelling a passage where the question asked for analysis of how the writer achieves an effect. Six to eight marked pieces of writing move this grade more reliably than any amount of reading.

English Literature

Cambridge 0475 · Pearson 4ET1

Quotation accuracy and a sustained argument are the two differentiators, and the unseen poetry component is where unprepared students lose most. Timed essay practice marked against the published criteria is the only format that works; discussion of texts alone does not transfer to a paper.

Business and Economics

Cambridge 0450 and 0455 · Pearson 4BS1 and 4EC1

Case-study application rather than definition recall. The high-tariff evaluation questions ask for a judgement supported by the stimulus material, and students who write everything they know score in the middle band. Diagram accuracy in economics is worth more than most students believe.

Computer Science and ICT

Cambridge 0478 and 0417 · Pearson 4IT1

Pseudocode and trace tables in computer science, and practical application skills in ICT, assessed in ways that reward precision. Students who can code in a real language still lose marks on the board's own pseudocode conventions, which are a notation to be learned rather than a programming skill.

Geography and History

Cambridge 0460 and 0470 · Pearson 4GE1 and 4HI1

Source evaluation in history and case-study specificity in geography. Both subjects reward named examples with figures attached and punish generic answers, so the tutoring work is usually about building a small, well-rehearsed bank of examples rather than covering more content.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Lakes families buy IGCSE support, chosen for what the examination actually rewards. All IB Gram teaching in the UAE is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video.

Weekly one-to-one against a named paper

One hour a week aimed at a specific paper in a specific tier - 0580 Paper 4 Extended, or 4MA1 Paper 2 Higher - rather than at the subject in general. The lesson works through past questions on the shared screen, marked as the student writes them, with a short written piece set and marked between sessions.

  • Tutor matched to the syllabus code and tier, not the subject name
  • Past questions from the official papers, worked and marked live
  • Written work set and marked between lessons, which is where the gain is
  • Review at six sessions against the component mark, not a general impression

Two subjects, alternating fortnights

For a household funding limited hours across nine subjects, alternating two subjects fortnightly with marked work in between often beats one subject weekly. It suits Year 10, where no deadline is imminent, and it halves the standing cost per subject while keeping two feedback cycles running.

  • Half the monthly cost per subject at the same hourly rate
  • Work set in the off week, so the cycle does not stall
  • Best used in Year 10 rather than in the final term
  • Needs a written plan or it drifts into general homework help

Timed paper sessions before the series

From the spring term, ninety minutes under conditions with the paper marked immediately afterwards. The value is in the marking conversation rather than the paper: a student who sees where four marks went on a six-mark question learns something a worked example cannot teach. Friday afternoons suit this in a Lakes week.

  • Full paper, timed, no interruptions, then marked line by line
  • Grade boundaries discussed as published evidence, never reproduced here
  • Scheduled against your centre's zone timetable, not a generic one
  • Two a week at most; stamina matters more than volume by April

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Lakes

01

Which board and tier your child is actually entered for

  • Confirm every code with the school's examinations officer before booking a tutor
  • Core and Foundation tiers carry a grade ceiling that tutoring cannot lift
  • 0654 students should not be taught from separate-science material
  • Specifications live on the boards' own sites; we link rather than reproduce

Answer this before anything else. The board and the syllabus code sit on the examination entry sheet, and the tier sits next to them. Cambridge Mathematics 0580 runs Core papers graded C to G and Extended papers graded A* to E, so a student on Core cannot reach an A no matter how well they are taught. Pearson Mathematics A 4MA1 runs a Foundation tier capped at grade 5 and a Higher tier from 9 down to 4 with an allowed 3. Four distinct ceilings, and the ceiling decides what tutoring can do.

The sciences fork too. Cambridge 0625 Physics centres enter either the practical test or the alternative-to-practical written paper, and the preparation for those is not the same. Pearson 4PH1 assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead. A student on Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is sitting a double award across three sciences and should not be tutored from separate-science 0610, 0620 and 0625 material, which is the single most common misdiagnosis in Dubai IGCSE tutoring.

A Lakes complication worth naming: schools in the Al Barsha corridor frequently split boards by department. Edexcel for mathematics and Cambridge for the sciences in the same Year 11 is a normal arrangement, which means a family can need two boards' worth of tutoring expertise in one household. That is manageable with two tutors matched by code. It is not manageable by hiring one person who lives nearby and teaches generally.

The table sets out the main codes side by side so the entry sheet can be read against it. Use it to confirm, not to guess - the examinations officer at your school is the authority, and the official syllabus documents on cambridgeinternational.org and qualifications.pearson.com are where the specifications live. We reference those documents and link out to them; we do not reproduce or supply syllabus material, mark schemes or past papers, which belong to the boards.

What the Dubai market charges, and how to verify it yourself

Go and check. The reason this section leads with that instruction rather than a number is that most tutoring pages in this market do not publish a figure at all, and a parent who cannot compare cannot judge. Open the rate pages of the providers quoted below, note the date, and put them next to each other. The whole exercise takes fifteen minutes and it will tell you more about what IGCSE support should cost in Dubai than any sales conversation will.

Here is what the exercise returns, read in October 2026. At the bottom, platform rates from about AED 33 to AED 65 an hour for university-student tutors. In the middle, a published figure of AED 150 an hour for IGCSE support from one agency and AED 200 for IB, against a broader qualified-tutor band of AED 150 to AED 300. Toward the top, AED 270 quoted for specialist work and a 2026 Dubai rate study putting specialist examination-year support at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with one premium provider at AED 650.

In-home visits price separately and higher, because the drive is inside the fee: AED 180 to AED 350 in the 2026 rate study and up to AED 500 in independent listings. Monthly packages appear too - roughly AED 799 for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour home visits. None of these are IB Gram prices. We quote after the free trial lesson, against the subject, the code and the tier, which is the only honest basis for a quote in a subject where tiers have different ceilings.

One number to put the rest in context. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under an incentives package the government valued at AED 1.5 billion. For a Lakes household, that means the fixed education cost is flat this year and the variable one is where decisions get made. The table below is laid out so a parent can see which band they are actually buying from.

Nine subjects, one evening: choosing which two to fund

  • Capped tier plus required subject equals the first priority
  • Open tier plus a two or three grade gap equals the best return
  • Mathematics and English carry forward further than any other grade
  • A six-grade gap is a tier conversation with the school, not a tutoring purchase

A Year 11 student at a British-curriculum school in the Al Barsha corridor is typically sitting eight to ten IGCSEs. A Lakes household has perhaps three usable hours a week in the evening after the bus, dinner and homework, and funding all nine subjects is neither affordable nor physically possible. So the real question is which two subjects deserve the hours, and it has a method rather than an answer.

Start with the ceiling. A subject where the student is entered on Core or Foundation has a capped grade, so tutoring there buys a secure pass rather than a top grade. If the capped subject is a required one - mathematics or English for a sixth-form entry condition - securing it is the priority. If it is not, the hours are better spent on an Extended or Higher subject where the ceiling is open and the student is two or three grades below their profile.

Then look at the dependency. Mathematics and English carry forward into almost every sixth-form and university condition, and a weak mathematics grade closes A Level and Higher Level science routes that a weak geography grade does not. For a student intending the IB Diploma afterwards, Extended mathematics and two Extended sciences are the ones that determine what Higher Level choices exist. Fund the subjects that keep doors open before the subjects where the student is merely unhappy.

Finally, look at the distance. A subject three grades below profile is usually a technique problem with a fast fix: command terms, answer structure, showing working. A subject six grades below is a content problem that needs two terms. In a household with three hours, two fast fixes beat one slow one, and the slow one usually needs a conversation with the school about tier rather than a tutor. Ask which it is before you buy anything.

04

The entry deadline sits months before the exam

  • Dates here are the boards' own published figures; always check the live timetable page
  • Cambridge: confirm your centre's administrative zone before building a calendar
  • No IB session or results date is published on this page by design
  • Entry deadlines are the practical cut-off for a tier change

Nobody in this market writes about examination administration, and it causes more avoidable damage than weak teaching does. Entries close long before papers are sat, forecast grades are submitted on a separate date, results arrive in stages to centres and then to students, and every one of those dates is set by the board rather than by the school. A family that learns this in February of Year 11 has already lost options.

For a UAE candidate the series are June and November — Cambridge's February and March series is offered to India only — and the counting-backwards shape is the same in both. Entries for June close in the spring, roughly four months ahead of the first paper, and the date is confirmed on the centre's statement of entry rather than publicly announced. Forecast grades are submitted on their own, earlier deadline. Results reach centres in August and students immediately after, with certificates following later still. The gap at either end is the whole point: a final entry deadline months before the first paper, and a results date months after the last one.

Pearson's calendar behaves the same way with different dates. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August. November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables in advance of each series, including for future November sittings, which is why a revision plan should link the live official timetable rather than copy dates that can be revised.

Two Cambridge mechanics deserve their own sentence. Centres are each allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states plainly that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. For the IB, no session or results date appears anywhere on this page: ibo.org is the source and your school's IB coordinator is the person to confirm with.

Where IGCSE marks are actually lost, subject by subject

  • Mathematics: multi-step questions, surds and algebraic fractions, unshown working
  • Chemistry: ionic equations, mole calculations, imprecise observations
  • Physics: units, unstated assumptions, circuit analysis under time pressure
  • Essay subjects: answering the wrong command term and reaching no judgement

Lost marks are specific and diagnosable, and the diagnosis is usually not what the student thinks. In mathematics the losses cluster in the final multi-step questions on each paper, in surds and algebraic fractions, and in unshown working that forfeits method marks a correct-but-unexplained answer would have earned. None of those are content gaps. All three respond to six weeks of marked written practice.

In the sciences the pattern is about precision rather than knowledge. Chemistry students lose marks writing ionic equations and stating observations loosely - a colour change described as 'it went darker' earns nothing where 'colourless to pale blue' earns the mark. Physics students lose marks on units and on unstated assumptions. Biology students lose them by answering the wrong command term: describe, explain and compare each demand a different answer shape and a well-informed student can halve a question's marks by choosing wrongly.

In the essay subjects the loss is structural. English Language candidates retell a passage where the question asked how the writer achieves an effect. English Literature candidates write about what happens rather than about how it is written, and the unseen poetry component punishes that hardest. Business and Economics candidates write everything they know on a high-tariff evaluation question and score in the middle band because no judgement was reached.

The reason this matters to a tutoring budget is that technique losses are cheap to fix and content losses are not. A student losing marks on command terms can be taught the five that matter in two sessions and then drilled for four weeks. A student missing two terms of chemistry content needs two terms. Ask any tutor to look at a marked mock paper and say which of the two they are looking at. A tutor who answers from the paper rather than from the subject is worth the rate.

06

Practical and applied skills when the tutor is on a screen

The honest answer first: an online tutor cannot supervise a titration. What an online tutor can do is prepare every mark that the practical assessment actually awards, which for most Lakes students is the larger part of the problem. The school runs the laboratory work; the examination tests whether the student can plan an investigation, record data properly, process it, evaluate method and identify sources of error. Those are written skills and they are taught well over a shared screen.

What this looks like in practice depends on the code. A Cambridge centre entering the alternative-to-practical written paper is asking students to answer about experiments on paper, and that paper is almost entirely teachable remotely: reading a measuring instrument from a diagram, spotting an uncontrolled variable, suggesting an improvement in method. A centre entering the practical test needs the school's own laboratory sessions for the manipulation marks, with the recording, processing and evaluation marks prepared in tutoring.

Pearson's model folds practical skills into the theory papers, which removes the question entirely: there is no separate practical examination to supervise, and the skills appear as written questions about method and data. For either board the most valuable remote work is the same - taking a set of real results, processing them with the right number of significant figures, plotting them, drawing the line that the data supports rather than the one the student expected, and writing an evaluation that names a specific error rather than 'human error'.

One boundary to state. Past papers, mark schemes, syllabus documents and grade-boundary tables belong to the boards, and we reference and link them rather than reproducing or supplying them. A provider offering to send you a pack of mark schemes is distributing someone else's copyright material, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure for the student as well. Official past material is available through your school's examinations officer and the boards' own sites.

07

Five subjects at grade E or 3: what the Ministry actually requires

  • Source: reporting of the Ministry's clarification of equivalency requirements, July 2026
  • Five, not six: a widely repeated subject count in this market is wrong
  • Equivalency is performed by the authority; no provider performs or guarantees it
  • No tutoring is required for equivalency, university entry or school progression

This is the regulatory fact that turns IGCSE grades from a school matter into a documentation matter, and almost nobody in this market writes about it. For the British track, equivalency requires proof of passes in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade.

Two details carry real weight. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count, which means a student with exactly five passes including Arabic does not yet meet the requirement. And at least one tutoring page ranking in this market states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced rule is five. Publishing the correct count is a small thing that beats a ranking page on accuracy, and a parent planning a subject load should plan from the right number.

The American track works differently and is included here because Lakes families move between systems. English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. For the IB there is no points threshold published in the source consulted, so no IB equivalency figure appears on this page; verify any such number on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority directly.

Finally, what this process is not. Equivalency and attestation are performed by the Ministry and the relevant authority, not by a tutoring provider, and no tutoring is required for it. Nothing about hiring a tutor speeds up, guarantees or affects an equivalency decision, and any provider implying otherwise is making a false-urgency claim about a regulatory process. Describe it, check it at the source, and use the official channel.

The Lakes timetable through mock season and study leave

  • Book the post-mock analysis session before the mocks begin
  • Use the early finishes on examination days; avoid the evening after a paper
  • Study leave: one timed paper every other day, marked, beats re-reading notes
  • Set the Ramadan slot in advance; early afternoon for younger, post-iftar for older

Mock season is where a Year 11 tutoring plan either earns its money or exposes itself. The mocks are the last honest diagnostic before entries harden and forecast grades are submitted, so the sessions immediately after them are the most valuable of the year. What matters is not the grade but the paper: which questions were left blank, where method marks were forfeited, which command terms were misread. That analysis takes a full session and it should be booked before the mocks, not after.

Timing in a Lakes household during mock fortnight is different from the rest of the year. Students are often released early on examination days, which opens slots that do not normally exist - a 14:00 session on a day with a morning paper is both possible and useful. Equally, the evening of a paper is the worst possible slot, because the student is spent. Plan the fortnight in advance against the school's mock timetable rather than defending the usual weekly hour through it.

Study leave is the other block worth planning deliberately. Those weeks contain more usable study hours than the whole of the preceding term, and they are almost always wasted on re-reading notes. The useful structure is a timed paper every other day, marked, with the gaps it exposes worked on in between - which is exactly what a ninety-minute session plus a marking conversation provides. Two sessions a week through study leave is usually the right volume; more produces fatigue rather than marks.

If Ramadan falls near the mocks or the examination series in a given year, front-load the timed work into the weeks before it and use the month itself for shorter, lighter, more frequent sessions. School days shorten, so an early-afternoon slot becomes available for a fasting student, and a post-iftar slot works for older students who have eaten. Agree the shift before the month starts rather than improvising in its first week.

Getting started from The Lakes, and what we will not claim

  • Send the syllabus code, the tier, and one marked piece of work
  • Free trial lesson, one subject, no card details collected
  • Tutor location and match time disclosed before you commit
  • No grade guarantees, no borrowed accreditation, no unsourced statistics

Send four things: the school, the year, the syllabus codes with their tiers, and a photograph of one marked piece of work. That last item does more than the other three combined, because it shows whether the problem is technique or content. We come back with a tutor who teaches that code at that tier, a proposed focus for the first three lessons, and a rate. The trial lesson is free, covers one subject, and takes no card details.

The limit is availability for narrow combinations. Mainstream IGCSE subjects match within a few days. A specific code at a specific tier in a less common subject - 0452 Accounting, a second-language option, a combined-science double award with a particular paper entry - can take longer, and the tutor may be based outside the UAE and teaching into Gulf Standard Time. We state which, and from where, before anything is agreed. No competitor page researched in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

What we will not claim is as important as what we will. No grade promise, no improvement figure, no statistic about past students, because none of those can be evidenced here. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry, IB, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation or partnership, and no tutor is described as an examiner unless their current status can be shown. The regulators are named on this page to explain what each one governs.

On the legal side, one thing a Lakes parent should ask any provider. Private tuition in the UAE runs on the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, granted free of charge for two years, with a stated two-working-day processing time and a wide list of eligible categories. Tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts has been published, so disregard any figure you see quoted.

Where we tutor

The Lakes and the communities that share its schools

Emirates Living and the areas around it send children to schools using different boards, sometimes splitting boards by department. These are the practical differences that change what an IGCSE tutor needs to know.

The Lakes

Six villa clusters - Deema, Forat, Ghadeer, Hattan, Maeen and Zulal - whose secondary students mostly travel out to Al Barsha and Al Sufouh, so board mix within one street can be wide.

The Meadows

Next door, with Emirates International School Meadows inside the community running the IB continuum, which means Meadows children are more often on MYP 4 and 5 than on IGCSE.

The Springs

Townhouse stock with a younger profile, so Year 9 subject-choice conversations are more common here than Year 11 revision ones. The board decision is often still open.

Emirates Hills

Dubai British School Emirates Hills runs the British route to IGCSE while Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills runs the IB, so two neighbours can be on entirely different systems.

The Views and The Greens

Apartment living closer to the Al Sufouh corridor, with Regent International School in The Greens on the British route. Shorter journeys, noisier homes, so the quiet-room question matters.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Where most Lakes secondary students actually sit their IGCSEs. Several of these schools split boards by department, which is why the entry sheet beats the school's name as a starting point.

Al Sufouh

Dubai College and American School of Dubai sit here on different systems again. A Lakes household with two children at two of these schools can be managing two boards and two calendars at once.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Islands

Villa communities on the other side of the motorway with a similar British-curriculum profile and the same shortage of tutors who teach a specific code at a specific tier locally.

Motor City and Sports City

A secondary catchment for Lakes families, reached down Al Khail Road. Worth noting because the return journey at 15:30 is what rules out an early in-home visit in this direction.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Lakes

The Al Barsha and Al Barsha South corridor

The main IGCSE catchment for Lakes families. Ask the examinations officer at any of these for two things: which board each department enters, and which Cambridge administrative zone the centre sits in. Both answers change a revision calendar and neither is usually on the website.

  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Safa Community School
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Repton School Al Barsha

Emirates Living, Emirates Hills and The Greens

The schools reachable without crossing Sheikh Zayed Road, running a mix of British and IB routes. A Lakes family choosing between the two at 14 is choosing between IGCSE examinations in Year 11 and criterion-marked MYP 4 and 5 with no external papers unless the school enters eAssessment.

  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Regent International School, The Greens
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills

Al Sufouh, Jumeirah and the southern belt

Reached down Al Sufouh Road or Al Khail Road, and a common second catchment for Lakes households with children at different schools. Different boards, different internal deadline calendars, and two separate revision plans in one villa.

  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • American School of Dubai
  • Jumeirah College
  • Sunmarke School, Jumeirah Village Triangle
  • GEMS Metropole School Motor City

Schools are named here to describe the local examination context a Lakes family is working within; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement by any named school is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, the tier and a marked paper

The syllabus code and tier come off the entry sheet; the marked paper shows whether the loss is technique or content. With those three items a match takes minutes. Without them a tutor is guessing at which of four possible versions of the same subject your child is actually sitting.

  2. 02

We match on the code, not the subject

0620 Chemistry and 4CH1 Chemistry are taught differently because the papers are built differently, and Core and Extended are different ceilings. The tutor proposed will have taught that code at that tier, and we say how long the match takes if the combination is narrow.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson against a real question

Sixty minutes working through a past question from the student's own paper on a shared screen. You are judging whether the tutor diagnoses the same loss the marked paper shows. No card details are collected to book it and there is no obligation afterwards.

  4. 04

Agree the component and the review point

Before the second lesson we write down which paper and which skill the next six sessions target, and what written work will be marked between them. At six sessions we compare the mark on that component. Stopping is one of the options we will name.

  5. 05

Plan the series, not just the week

The mock timetable, the school's internal deadlines, the board's entry deadline and the examination window go into the plan at the start. Sessions around mock fortnight and study leave are booked in advance, and the Ramadan shift is agreed before the month begins.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught from the entry sheet

Every match starts from the syllabus code and tier rather than the subject name, because Cambridge 0580 Core, 0580 Extended, Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and 4MA1 Higher are four different courses with four different ceilings. Most tutoring in this market is sold against a subject label, which is why the wrong material gets taught.

Rates printed with their sources

The AED figures on this page are other providers' published rates and a 2026 Dubai rate study, read in October 2026 and attributed line by line so you can open the originals and check. Three of the six competitor pages researched publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars.

Examination administration treated as content

Entry deadlines, forecast grade dates, Cambridge's six administrative zones and the results release sequence are published here because they change what a family can do and when. No competitor page researched in this market names a single session, deadline or results date.

Online because the code decides the tutor

Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; that is an India-only service. The gain is that a Lakes family gets the tutor who teaches their code and tier rather than the one who lives closest to Emirates Living.

Board material referenced, never redistributed

Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson. We cite them and link to the official sites, and we do not supply them as downloads. A provider sending you a pack of mark schemes is distributing someone else's copyright.

The equivalency rule stated correctly

The British-track requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. A commonly repeated six-subject figure in this market is wrong, and planning a subject load from it costs money.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Lakes: your questions answered

Which exam board will my child in The Lakes actually be entered for?+

Only the school can tell you, and the answer is often split by department. Schools in the Al Barsha corridor that Lakes children attend commonly enter Pearson Edexcel for mathematics and Cambridge for the sciences in the same Year 11. The authoritative document is the examination entry sheet, which carries the board and the syllabus code - 0580 or 4MA1 for maths, 0620 or 4CH1 for chemistry - along with the tier. Ask the examinations officer rather than relying on the school's curriculum page, which usually names one board for the whole school.

Will an IGCSE tutor come to a villa in The Lakes, or is this all online?+

All online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. The in-home market does exist in Dubai and is published at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, against AED 150 to AED 300 for an equivalently qualified tutor working online. The practical argument for video in an IGCSE context is supply: a tutor who teaches your exact code at your exact tier is rarely the one living within twenty minutes of Hattan.

Should a Year 10 student in The Lakes be entered for Core or Extended?+

That is a conversation with the school and it has a hard financial consequence. Cambridge Core papers are graded C to G and Extended A* to E, so a Core entry caps the grade below the level most sixth-form science routes require. Pearson Foundation caps at grade 5 while Higher runs 9 to 4. The decision is effectively locked at the board's final entry deadline, which falls months before the papers. If the tier is wrong, the fix is a school conversation before that deadline, not more tutoring afterwards.

We are sitting nine IGCSEs. Which two deserve a tutor?+

Work through three filters. First the ceiling: a capped tier in a required subject such as mathematics or English is the first priority, because securing the pass protects every later option. Second the dependency: mathematics and the Extended sciences determine which A Level and Higher Level routes stay open, so they outrank a subject the student merely dislikes. Third the distance: a subject two or three grades below profile is usually a technique problem with a six-week fix, while a six-grade gap needs a tier conversation with the school rather than a tutor.

How far ahead of the exam does the entry deadline close?+

Months, at both ends. For a UAE candidate the live series is June with November as the resit route, and entries for June close in the spring — roughly four months before the first paper, with the exact date on the centre's statement of entry rather than in a public announcement. Forecast grades are submitted separately and earlier than most parents expect, so the school's prediction is fixed well before revision peaks. Pearson works the same way with its own dates: the November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and entries for it closed long before the autumn term was underway. Pearson publishes provisional timetables in advance, so plan against the live official timetable page rather than a restated date, and treat the entry deadline as the one that decides what grade is reachable.

Why does Cambridge give our centre a zone-specific timetable?+

Because examinations are sat across many time zones and Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones to manage that. Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. The practical instruction for a Lakes family is to ask the examinations officer which zone the school sits in, then build the revision calendar from that zone's timetable and nothing else.

How do we prepare for a practical-skills paper from a villa in The Lakes?+

By preparing the marks the paper actually awards, which are mostly written. Planning an investigation, controlling variables, recording data to the right precision, processing it, plotting it and evaluating method are all taught well over a shared screen. A Cambridge centre entering the alternative-to-practical written paper can be prepared almost entirely remotely. A centre entering the practical test needs the school's laboratory sessions for the manipulation marks, with everything else done in tutoring. Pearson folds practical skills into the theory papers, which removes the question.

A tutoring site told us six IGCSEs are needed for equivalency. What does the rule actually say?+

Five. The reported Ministry requirement for the British track is proof of passes in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level with the same grade. At least one tutoring page ranking in this market publishes six, which is wrong and which would change how a family plans a subject load. Verify the current rule on moe.gov.ae before relying on either figure.

Do Arabic and Islamic Education count towards the Ministry's five-subject requirement?+

No. The reporting of the Ministry's clarification states that Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count. The practical consequence for a Lakes family is arithmetic: a student holding exactly five passes where one of them is Arabic does not yet meet the requirement and needs another accredited subject. Both subjects remain mandatory on the school timetable in Dubai regardless, under KHDA's requirements for all private schools, so this is a counting rule rather than a reason to drop them.

Cambridge runs a November series and Pearson runs one too. Are they the same thing?+

Same month, different administration. Cambridge runs its International GCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, and allocates centres to one of six administrative zones. Pearson Edexcel runs May/June and November series; its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. The dates, the entry deadlines and the results releases differ, so a household sitting both boards in November is managing two calendars rather than one.

When do IGCSE results actually reach students, and how long is the wait?+

Roughly two to three months after the last paper, in two stages. For Pearson, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Cambridge follows the same rhythm on the series UAE candidates actually sit: June results land in August and November results in the following January, with certificates arriving later again. Schools frequently see results a day before students do. Review and remark windows open from the student release date, which is why knowing the exact date for your series matters practically.

Our school uses Edexcel for maths and Cambridge for sciences. Does that complicate tutoring?+

It complicates finding one tutor, which is the main practical argument for matching by code rather than by proximity. The papers are built differently: Pearson 4MA1 is tiered Foundation and Higher with its own paper structure, while Cambridge 0620 and 0625 offer Core and Extended papers plus a choice between a practical test and an alternative-to-practical paper. Two tutors matched to two codes works cleanly. One tutor covering both boards generally means one subject taught well and one taught from the wrong specification.

During mock season, what time can a Year 11 student in The Lakes start a lesson?+

Earlier than usual, and the opportunity is worth taking. Students are often released after a morning paper, which opens a 14:00 or 15:00 slot that does not exist in a normal week - and a Lakes household whose child is normally bussed back from Al Barsha at 16:20 should use it. Avoid the evening of a paper entirely; the student is spent and nothing sticks. Plan the whole fortnight against the school's mock timetable in advance, including the post-mock analysis session, rather than defending the usual weekly hour through it.

Eight weeks from the series with two weak subjects, what is worth doing?+

Triage, then technique. Eight weeks is enough to fix answer structure, command terms, working-out discipline and timing, and it is not enough to learn two terms of missing content in two subjects. So pick the subject where the gap is technique and drill it with timed papers marked immediately; in the other, secure the topics that appear on every paper rather than attempting the whole specification. Two timed sessions a week with marking conversations is the right volume. More produces fatigue, and fatigue costs marks in the series itself.

Do we keep paying for lessons during study leave?+

Usually yes, and this is the period where the hours are worth most. Study leave contains more usable study time than the preceding term and is almost always spent re-reading notes, which does not transfer to a paper. A better structure is one timed paper every other day, marked, with the gaps it exposes worked on in between - two ninety-minute sessions a week plus marking conversations fits that. Beyond two, fatigue sets in. If the household needs to cut cost somewhere, cut Year 10 rather than study leave.

Send the syllabus code and one marked paper

The fastest route to a useful first lesson is four pieces of information: the school, the year, the syllabus codes with their tiers, and a photograph of one marked piece of work. That tells us whether the loss is technique or content and lets us match a tutor to the exact code rather than to a subject label. The trial lesson is free, covers one subject, and takes no card details. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so nobody arrives at a Lakes address; home visits are a service we offer only in India. If the real answer is a tier conversation with the school, we will say so.
