IGCSE Maths Tutor in The Lakes

The question behind most searches for an IGCSE maths tutor in The Lakes is whether anyone nearby actually knows the specification your child is entered for. There are four common answers in Dubai - Cambridge 0580 Core, 0580 Extended, Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and 4MA1 Higher - and they are different courses with different ceilings. IB Gram matches on the code and tier, teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and starts with a free trial lesson on a real past question.

IB & IGCSE in The Lakes

Four specifications, one subject name, and the question you are really asking

Answer the question honestly: there probably is somebody within a short drive of The Lakes who teaches mathematics, and there is a decent chance they do not teach the specification your child is entered for. 'IGCSE maths' names at least four courses in Dubai schools. Cambridge 0580 splits into Core papers graded C to G and Extended papers graded A* to E. Pearson Edexcel Mathematics A 4MA1 splits into a Foundation tier capped at grade 5 and a Higher tier running 9 down to 4 with an allowed 3. Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 is a fifth thing again.

Those are not difficulty settings on one course. They are different content lists with different papers and different ceilings. Surds, algebraic fractions, function notation, the sine and cosine rules, vectors, histograms with unequal class widths and the gradient-function work all sit on Extended and Higher and not on Core or Foundation. A tutor teaching the wrong one of those pairs is either covering material that will never be examined, or leaving out a quarter of what will be.

That is why the supply question in Emirates Living is sharper for mathematics than for most subjects. Within fifteen minutes of Deema or Hattan there are tutors who can teach mathematics; the set who have taught Pearson 4MA1 Higher papers recently, know which topics the non-calculator paper favours, and can mark to the board's method-mark conventions, is considerably smaller. Hiring by distance means hiring from the first set and hoping.

So the delivery position, stated plainly because the search phrase points the other way. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE - home visits are a service offered only in India, and nobody arrives at a Lakes address under any arrangement sold here. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper open on a shared screen and the student's working annotated as it happens. The in-home market exists in Dubai and is published at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, against AED 150 to AED 300 online for comparable credentials.

What follows is the detail a maths page should contain and almost none of them do. Which papers each specification sits and what the calculator rules are. Which topics are tier-restricted, so you can tell whether your child is being taught the right list. Where marks are actually lost, which is rarely where families assume. What a grade 9 or an A* asks for beyond correct answers. What the market charges and whether the top of the band is worth it for one subject. And a twenty-minute method for checking a tutor before you pay them anything.

One framing note before any of that. Mathematics is the subject where a tutoring mistake is cheapest to make and most expensive to discover. A history tutor working slightly off-syllabus still teaches a student to argue from evidence. A maths tutor teaching the wrong tier is teaching content that cannot be examined, and the student's confidence rises while their mark does not, because practice on the wrong question types feels like progress. The way to avoid that is not to find a better tutor; it is to start from the entry sheet, agree a named topic strand, and check the mark on it after six sessions rather than after a mock.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics is the subject that gates the most routes at 16, so the sequence around it matters. Here are the four stages a Lakes family plans across and what mathematics does at each.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Tiered into Core and Extended, with Core papers graded C to G and Extended papers graded A* to E. The current syllabus examines each tier with two papers, one non-calculator and one calculator, so paper structure differs from cohorts entered under earlier versions. Extended carries additional content including surds, functions, the sine and cosine rules, vectors and the gradient-function work.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that the correct zone version of the timetable must be used, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam otherwise. Ask your school's examinations officer for the zone and the syllabus year your child is entered against, because both change what the revision plan should look like.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Two written papers of equal weight, tiered into Foundation and Higher, graded 9 to 1. Foundation caps at grade 5; Higher runs from 9 down to 4 with an allowed 3 below that. Calculators are permitted in both papers, which changes the balance of skills compared with a specification that includes a non-calculator paper. Higher tier adds surds, functions, vectors and gradient-function work.

Pearson runs May/June and November series and publishes provisional timetables ahead of each. Its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day. Several schools in the Al Barsha corridor enter Pearson for mathematics while using Cambridge for the sciences.

0606Ages 15-16 · alongside Year 11

Cambridge Additional Mathematics and Pearson Further Pure

Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics and Pearson 4PM1 Further Pure Mathematics are taken alongside the main qualification by students heading for A Level or Higher Level mathematics. Both cover material that overlaps the beginning of a post-16 course, including calculus and more advanced trigonometry, and both are graded separately from the main maths grade.

In Dubai these are offered by some schools and not others, and they are the clearest signal that a student is being prepared for Higher Level or A Level mathematics rather than simply finishing IGCSE. A student who has sat one arrives in Year 12 with a genuine advantage; a student who has not is not disadvantaged, provided the transition is planned.

POST16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level, IB Higher Level and the step up

A Level Mathematics and IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches both assume algebraic fluency that IGCSE only partly tests. The commonest failure in Year 12 is not new content but unpractised manipulation - rearranging, factorising, handling surds and indices without a calculator - which is exactly the material on the Extended and Higher tiers.

A Lakes student intending Higher Level Analysis and Approaches or A Level Mathematics should be on Extended or Higher tier, and should expect a bridging block over the summer. Market rates for that bridging work sit at the specialist band of AED 200 to AED 450 and above, which is a reason to get the tier right in Year 10 rather than repair it at 17.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The specifications first, then the subjects where mathematics is the limiting factor rather than the subject itself. Both matter when deciding where a single tutoring hour should go.

Cambridge 0580 Extended

Grades A* to E

The tier that keeps post-16 mathematics open. Carries surds, algebraic fractions, function notation, the sine and cosine rules, three-dimensional trigonometry, vectors, histograms with unequal class widths and gradient-function work. Most losses sit in the multi-step questions at the end of the calculator paper and in unshown working on the non-calculator one.

Cambridge 0580 Core

Grades C to G

A complete course with a hard ceiling at grade C, and a sound entry for a student who needs a secure pass rather than a top grade. The tutoring aim here is reliability: arithmetic without slips, standard procedures executed under time, and the question types that recur on every paper. Tier-change conversations belong in Year 10.

Pearson 4MA1 Higher

Grades 9 to 4, allowed 3

Two equally weighted papers with calculators permitted in both, which shifts the emphasis toward problem interpretation rather than hand computation. Higher tier adds surds, functions, vectors and gradient-function work. Students lose marks by writing calculator output without the method that produced it.

Pearson 4MA1 Foundation

Grades 5 to 1

Capped at grade 5, which is below many sixth-form conditions, so the tier decision has consequences beyond the grade itself. The efficient work is accuracy and question-type recognition rather than coverage, and the honest conversation is whether a move to Higher is viable before the entry deadline.

Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics

Taken alongside 0580 Extended

An extra qualification covering material that overlaps the start of A Level and IB Higher Level mathematics, including calculus and extended trigonometry. Students sitting it need tutoring that treats it as a post-16 course rather than as harder IGCSE, which is a different teaching register entirely.

Pearson 4PM1 Further Pure Mathematics

Alongside 4MA1 Higher

Pearson's equivalent extension, again graded separately. Offered by some Dubai schools and not others. A student taking it is being prepared for a mathematical route at 18, and the tutoring should be aimed at the harder manipulation that a post-16 course will assume on day one.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

The subject where weak mathematics shows up first. Rearranging equations, handling standard form, reading gradients from graphs and managing units are maths skills marked in a physics paper. A student losing physics marks on calculation is often best helped by two sessions of algebra rather than more physics content.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

Mole calculations, concentration and percentage yield are arithmetic under pressure, and the losses are proportion and unit errors rather than chemistry. Students who recite equations and misplace a factor of ten are telling you that the mathematics, not the chemistry, needs the hour.

Business Studies and Economics

Cambridge 0450, 0455 · Pearson 4BS1, 4EC1

Ratio analysis, break-even, index numbers and percentage change carry marks in both subjects and are routinely dropped by students who can discuss the concepts fluently. Diagram accuracy in economics is also a mathematical skill: axes labelled, shifts drawn properly, intersections read.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 · Pearson 4IT1

Binary, hexadecimal, logic and trace tables are mathematical in character, and the board's pseudocode conventions are a notation to learn rather than a programming skill. A student who codes well in a real language can still lose marks on paper for precisely this reason.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, each matched to a different part of a mathematics grade. All IB Gram teaching in the UAE is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly hour on a named paper

One hour a week working past questions from the exact specification and tier, with the student writing and the tutor annotating on a shared screen. The point is method marks: the tutor sees the working as it forms rather than after it is finished, which is the one thing a worked video solution cannot do.

  • Tutor matched to 0580 Extended, 0580 Core, 4MA1 Higher or 4MA1 Foundation
  • Working annotated live, with method marks pointed out as they are earned or lost
  • A short written set marked between lessons every week
  • Review at six sessions against the mark on a named topic strand

Non-calculator drill blocks

Short, frequent sessions on manipulation without a calculator: surds, indices, algebraic fractions, exact trigonometric values, factorising. Thirty focused minutes twice a week beats an hour once, and this is the material that both the Cambridge non-calculator paper and every post-16 mathematics course assume.

  • Two short sessions a week rather than one long one
  • Fluency measured in time taken, not just accuracy
  • Directly transferable to A Level and Higher Level mathematics
  • Best scheduled early in the evening, while the student is fresh

Timed papers before the series

Ninety minutes under conditions from the spring term, marked immediately afterwards line by line. The marking conversation is the product: a student who sees four marks lost on a six-mark question for an unstated step learns something that no amount of reading can teach. Friday afternoons suit this in a Lakes week.

  • Full paper from the correct specification and tier, timed
  • Marked to the board's method-mark conventions
  • Official past material accessed through your school, not supplied by us
  • Two a week at most; fatigue costs marks in the real paper

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Lakes

01

Does anyone near The Lakes know your child's maths specification?

This is the question the search phrase is really asking, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Within a short drive of Emirates Living there are tutors who teach mathematics. The subset who have recently taught the specification and tier your child is entered for - who know which topics sit on Extended and not on Core, how the current Cambridge paper structure splits between non-calculator and calculator work, and how Pearson's method marks are awarded - is much smaller than the subset who teach maths.

You can test the claim yourself in one question. Ask a prospective tutor to name three topics that appear on Extended papers and not on Core, or on Higher and not on Foundation. The answer should arrive immediately and should include something like surds, function notation and the sine or cosine rule. A tutor who begins talking about building confidence has told you they have not taught the specification, which is not a character judgement but is decisive information.

The reason this matters more in mathematics than elsewhere is the tier ceiling. Cambridge Core papers are graded C to G and Extended run A* to E. Pearson Foundation caps at grade 5 while Higher runs 9 down to 4 with an allowed 3. A tutor teaching Extended content to a Core candidate is wasting the hour; a tutor teaching Core content to an Extended candidate is leaving a quarter of the examinable material untouched. Either error is invisible until a mock paper, by which point two terms have gone.

What online delivery changes is only which set you hire from. The tutor is chosen because they teach 4MA1 Higher, not because they live near Ghadeer, and the lesson begins when the student sits down rather than when a car finds the gate. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. The in-home market in Dubai is published at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, and this page prints those figures rather than avoiding them.

02

The four papers your child might actually be sitting

  • Confirm the syllabus year as well as the code; paper structure has changed
  • Ask the examinations officer which Cambridge administrative zone the centre sits in
  • Syllabus documents and past papers stay on the boards' own sites; we link, not host
  • Tier decisions effectively lock at the board's final entry deadline

Mathematics is the IGCSE subject where paper structure differs most between boards and between syllabus years, and getting it wrong wastes revision time in a way that is hard to recover. Cambridge 0580's current syllabus examines each tier with two papers, one non-calculator and one calculator, which is a change from the arrangement earlier cohorts sat. Pearson 4MA1 examines two equally weighted papers with calculators permitted in both. That single difference reshapes what a revision plan should prioritise.

Think about what it means practically. A Cambridge candidate under the current syllabus has to be fluent without a calculator - exact surd values, index manipulation, fraction arithmetic, standard trigonometric values - because an entire paper depends on it. A Pearson candidate can use a calculator throughout, so the marks shift toward interpreting the question correctly and recording method, and the common failure is writing down a calculator output with no visible steps behind it.

Cambridge's administration adds one more variable. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask your school's examinations officer for the zone and build the revision calendar from that timetable, not from a version found online.

The table below sets out the four common routes with the facts that are stable across syllabus years - tier, grade range, calculator position and what each implies for tutoring. Confirm paper durations and mark totals against the current syllabus document for your child's cohort on the board's own site; we reference those documents and link to them rather than reproducing them, because they are the boards' copyright and because they are revised.

Which topics are tier-restricted, and how to check you are being taught the right list

  • Confirm the content list against the current syllabus document for your cohort
  • An Extended candidate who has never met surds has a coverage problem to raise with school
  • A Core candidate drilled on Extended questions gets worse, not better
  • Practice must resemble the paper that will actually be sat

Here is the practical test of whether a tutor is teaching the right course. Both boards restrict a substantial block of content to the upper tier, and the restricted block is consistent enough to be usable as a checklist. If your child is an Extended or Higher candidate and has never met function notation, surds or the sine rule, somebody is teaching the lower list. If they are a Core or Foundation candidate and spending evenings on vectors, somebody is teaching the upper one.

The upper-tier block covers, broadly: surds and exact values; algebraic fractions and harder rearrangement; function notation, including composite and inverse functions; trigonometry beyond right-angled triangles, meaning the sine and cosine rules and work in three dimensions; vectors as column quantities with magnitude; histograms with unequal class widths and cumulative frequency; and the gradient-function work that leads into calculus. None of that appears on a Core or Foundation paper.

The lower-tier content is not a reduced version of the same questions either, which is the second common error. A Core paper asks different question types, with more structure given and fewer multi-step chains, so a Core candidate drilled on Extended questions performs worse rather than better - the practice does not resemble what they will sit. Matching the practice to the paper is most of what good mathematics tutoring is.

Use the table as a conversation with your child rather than with a tutor. Go through the rows and ask whether each has appeared in class this year. The gaps you find are either tier-appropriate, in which case nothing is wrong, or they are a genuine coverage problem that needs raising with the school before it needs tutoring. Either outcome is worth the fifteen minutes, and both are cheaper than six weeks of the wrong lessons.

04

Where IGCSE maths marks are actually lost

  • Method marks: a right answer with no working scores less than a sound wrong one
  • The last page of each paper carries the multi-step chains where grades are decided
  • Accuracy, units and required form account for several marks per paper
  • Only timed practice changes time-management behaviour

Not where families think. The dominant loss is not wrong answers; it is right answers with no visible route to them. Both boards award method marks, and a correct final answer with no working earns fewer marks than a wrong final answer with a sound method shown. Students who have learned to compute mentally lose marks steadily and invisibly for two years, and the fix is a habit rather than knowledge.

The second loss is the end of each paper. Marks are not distributed evenly: the last few questions carry multi-step chains where a student must choose an approach, carry a result forward and finish. Students who have only practised single-step questions reliably stall at the second step, and the three or four marks per question add up to a grade. Practising the last page of past papers specifically, rather than working forward from the first, is the single most efficient revision change available.

The third is unit and form errors: an answer given to the wrong degree of accuracy, a length given where an area was asked for, a probability written as a percentage greater than one hundred, a decimal where an exact value was required. Each is one mark and they recur across a paper. A student losing six marks this way across two papers is losing most of a grade boundary on something that takes two sessions to correct.

The fourth is time. Both boards' papers reward a student who abandons a stuck question and returns to it, and punish one who spends eleven minutes on a four-mark question out of stubbornness. Timed practice teaches this and nothing else does; discussion of time management in the abstract changes no behaviour. It is also why a ninety-minute session with a fresh student on a Friday afternoon is worth more than an hour at 18:30 after a bus from Al Barsha.

05

Calculators, formula provision and the things nobody teaches

Two mechanical matters decide more marks than their profile suggests. The first is the calculator: which model the school requires, whether the student can use its statistical and fraction functions fluently, and whether they can produce exact forms where the paper demands them. A student who owns the right calculator and uses a tenth of it is giving away marks on every paper where speed matters. Two sessions of calculator fluency is among the cheapest interventions available.

Where a specification includes a non-calculator paper, as Cambridge 0580's current syllabus does, the inverse problem appears. Students who have relied on a calculator for two years cannot handle surds, index laws, fraction arithmetic or exact trigonometric values at speed, and an entire paper is built on those skills. Short, frequent drill - thirty minutes twice a week rather than an hour once - is the format that produces fluency, because fluency is about retrieval speed rather than understanding.

The second mechanical matter is formula provision. Each specification states which formulae are given in the examination and which must be recalled, and students routinely memorise the given ones and fail to memorise the rest. Check the current syllabus document for your child's cohort rather than relying on what an older sibling remembers, because provision is revised. Then build the recall list explicitly - it is usually a single sheet, and a single sheet is a weekend's work rather than a term's.

One boundary to state while we are on documents. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson. We reference them, cite the official address and link out; we do not reproduce them or supply them as downloads. A provider offering you a pack of mark schemes is distributing someone else's copyright material, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure for the student. Official past material comes through your school's examinations officer.

06

What a grade 9 or an A* actually asks for

  • Top grades need accuracy, unprompted starts and non-calculator fluency
  • A 4-to-6 move is a technique purchase; a 6-to-9 move is a different, longer job
  • If another subject sits two grades low, that is usually the better hour to buy
  • No grade boundaries are reproduced here; read them where the board publishes them

The top band is not the same subject played faster. Reaching the highest grades on either board requires three things that are rarely taught explicitly. First, complete accuracy on the routine material, because at that level a dropped sign is the difference between bands rather than an irritation. Second, the ability to begin an unstructured multi-step question without a prompt - choosing an approach rather than executing a given one. Third, fluency without a calculator, which carries into every post-16 course.

A student sitting at a solid 6 or a B who wants the top grade is therefore buying something different from a student moving from a 4 to a 6. The latter is usually a technique purchase: command of question types, visible method, accuracy, time. The former is a selection-and-start purchase, and it needs harder questions, more open ones, and a tutor willing to leave the student stuck for two minutes rather than rescuing them. That is a specific teaching skill and worth asking about.

It is also the most expensive grade to buy, which is worth knowing before committing. Moving two grades in the middle of the range is achievable in a term of well-aimed weekly work. Moving from a 6 to a 9 generally takes longer, costs more and succeeds less often, because the marks at the top of the paper are the ones designed to separate. If the household budget is limited and another subject sits two grades below target, the other subject is the better purchase.

There are no published grade boundaries on this page, and there will not be. Boundaries are set per series by the board and published by them, and they move; reproducing them here would be both a copyright matter and misleading. Your school's examinations officer can discuss historical boundaries in context, which is the right place for that conversation because the context - the paper, the cohort, the series - is what makes a boundary meaningful.

07

What a maths tutor costs in this market, and whether the top band is worth it

Start at the specialist end, because that is where the question actually sits for a single subject. A 2026 Dubai rate study places examination-year specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above; one agency publishes AED 270 an hour for specialist work and one premium provider publishes AED 650. Below that, the qualified-subject-tutor band runs AED 150 to AED 300, with one agency listing AED 150 specifically for IGCSE support against AED 200 for IB. Platform rates for university-student tutors start around AED 33 to AED 65.

So is the specialist band worth it for one IGCSE mathematics grade? Sometimes, and the test is specific. Pay the specialist rate when the work requires somebody who has taught the tier recently and marks to the board's conventions - a 6 to a 9 attempt, a tier-change decision, or a Pearson Higher candidate whose method marks are being lost systematically. Pay the qualified-tutor rate for everything else, which is most cases, including the common and valuable move from a 4 to a 6.

Do not pay the premium rate for drill. Non-calculator fluency, times-table-level retrieval and recurring question types are taught perfectly well at the lower end of the qualified band, and they are exactly the work that benefits from frequency rather than seniority. A household spending AED 450 an hour on surds practice is buying a seniority it is not using. Splitting the work - specialist hours for diagnosis and hard questions, cheaper hours for drill - is the efficient structure and almost nobody suggests it.

Two notes on the figures. Each is another provider's published rate or a published rate study, read in October 2026, and attributed in the table so you can open the source and check. And none of them is an IB Gram price: we quote after the free trial lesson, against the specification, the tier and the diagnosis, with no package to buy. We state no VAT position, because the UAE treatment of tuition fees is a Federal Tax Authority matter - ask any provider directly and keep the answer.

Checking a maths tutor in twenty minutes

  • Make them teach the last question on a real paper from your child's tier
  • Ask for three tier-restricted topics and the formula-recall list
  • Ask what gets set between lessons and how it is marked
  • Ask the permit question and the location question before booking

You do not need to be a mathematician to assess one, and twenty minutes is enough. Open a past paper from your child's own specification and tier at the last page. Ask the tutor to talk through the final question as if teaching it. You are listening for three things: whether they identify what the question is really testing, whether they say out loud where a student would typically lose a mark, and whether they show the working rather than announce the answer.

Then ask the specification question. Name three topics on Extended and not on Core, or on Higher and not on Foundation. Then ask which formulae are given in the examination for this specification and which must be recalled. A tutor who has taught the course answers both quickly. A tutor who has not will generalise, and the generalisation is the answer you needed.

Third, ask what they would set between lessons and how it would be marked. The correct answer involves written work, returned with method marks identified rather than ticks and crosses. A tutor who sets nothing is selling contact time, and contact time without a feedback cycle does not move a mathematics grade - which is why two shorter sessions with work in between frequently outperform one longer session without.

Finally, ask the two administrative questions. What is their permit position - the UAE private tuition work permit is issued by MoHRE under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, free of charge for two years, with a stated two-working-day processing time, so there is no reason not to hold one. And where are they based, because a tutor teaching into Gulf Standard Time from elsewhere is perfectly workable but you should know before you book rather than afterwards.

  • No grade promises, no borrowed accreditation, no redistributed papers

Send four things: the school, the year, the specification code with its tier, and a photograph of one marked piece of mathematics - ideally a mock paper rather than a homework sheet. The marked paper tells us whether the losses are method marks, accuracy, multi-step chains or genuine coverage gaps, and those four diagnoses need four different first lessons. We come back with a tutor who teaches that code at that tier and a proposed focus for the first three sessions.

The trial lesson is free, covers one subject, takes no card details, and is spent on a real past question rather than on an assessment questionnaire. You are judging whether the tutor's diagnosis matches the marked paper in front of you. If it does not, say so and we will propose someone else; if it does, the focus and the review point get written down before the second lesson.

The availability limit is narrower in mathematics than families expect, because the specification and tier combination narrows the pool. Cambridge 0580 Extended and Pearson 4MA1 Higher match quickly. A Core or Foundation candidate who needs a tutor comfortable teaching to a capped tier, or a student sitting 0606 or 4PM1 alongside the main qualification, can take longer, and the tutor may be based outside the UAE teaching into Gulf Standard Time. We say which, and from where, first.

What we will not claim: no grade promise, no improvement figure, no statistic about past students without the number, the date and the method. No approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB, because IB Gram holds none of them. No UAE office, because there isn't one. No tutor described as an examiner without current evidence. And no board material supplied as a download, because it is not ours to distribute.

Where we tutor

Where we teach maths around The Lakes

The specification a child is entered for depends on the school, and the school depends on which direction they travel in the morning. These notes describe the mathematics picture around Emirates Living.

The Lakes

Six clusters whose teenagers mostly sit IGCSE outside the community. One street can contain a Cambridge Extended candidate and a Pearson Higher candidate, which is why a shared tutor rarely works for two neighbours.

The Meadows

Emirates International School Meadows runs the IB continuum, so Meadows students more often meet criterion-marked MYP mathematics in Standard or Extended streams than an IGCSE tiered paper.

The Springs

Younger average age, so the live question here is Year 9 tier readiness rather than Year 11 revision. This is where a cheap early intervention in algebra pays for itself twice over.

Emirates Hills

Dubai British School Emirates Hills on the British route and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills on the IB. Two neighbours can be sitting a tiered IGCSE paper and an MYP criterion task in the same term.

The Greens and The Views

Apartment stock with Regent International School inside The Greens. Shorter commutes mean more families attempt a pre-dinner maths slot, which suits non-calculator practice while the student is fresh.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Where most Lakes IGCSE candidates study, and where several schools enter Pearson for mathematics while using Cambridge elsewhere. Confirm the code from the entry sheet rather than the school's curriculum page.

Al Sufouh

Dubai College and American School of Dubai sit here on different systems, so the mathematics route differs sharply between two schools eight minutes apart.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Islands

Villa communities across the motorway with a similar British-curriculum profile. Worth noting because tutors serving them rarely serve Emirates Living the same evening, which tightens local supply further.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Lakes

Where Lakes students sit IGCSE mathematics

The British-curriculum schools Lakes teenagers most commonly attend. Ask each examinations officer two questions: which board mathematics is entered under, and which syllabus year the current cohort is assessed against. Both answers change the paper structure your child will meet.

  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Safa Community School
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Emirates Living and Emirates Hills

The nearest schools, running both routes. Dubai British School Emirates Hills and Regent International School take students through IGCSE; Emirates International School Meadows and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills run MYP mathematics in Standard and Extended streams instead.

  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Regent International School, The Greens
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills

The Al Khail Road belt

A secondary catchment reached down Al Khail Road, with the longest return journey of any Lakes route. Relevant to a maths timetable because a student arriving home after 16:45 should not be doing non-calculator practice that evening.

  • GEMS Metropole School Motor City
  • Arcadia School
  • Sunmarke School, Jumeirah Village Triangle

Schools are named to describe the local examination context a Lakes family is working within; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement by any named school is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, the tier and a marked paper

Cambridge 0580 Core, 0580 Extended, Pearson 4MA1 Foundation or 4MA1 Higher, plus a photograph of one marked mock. Those two items separate four different courses and four different diagnoses, and they take a first lesson from a general conversation to a specific one.

  2. 02

    We diagnose before we quote

The proposal names what the marked paper shows - method marks, accuracy, multi-step chains or a coverage gap - and what the first three lessons will do about it. The rate follows the diagnosis. A quote given before anyone has looked at the work is a quote for something unspecified.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson on a real question

Sixty minutes working a past question from your child's own specification and tier on a shared screen, with the student writing and the tutor annotating. You are checking whether the diagnosis matches the paper. No card details are collected and nothing is owed if the answer is no.

  4. 04

Split the work between bands if it saves money

Where the plan needs both diagnosis and drill, we will say so: specialist attention for the hard questions and tier decisions, cheaper frequent sessions for non-calculator fluency. Paying a specialist rate for surds practice is buying seniority that is not being used.

  5. 05

Review at six sessions against a topic strand

Before the second lesson we write down which strand is being targeted and the current mark on it. At six sessions we compare. The honest options are continue, change the strand, change the tutor, or stop, and we will name the one we think applies rather than waiting to be asked.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the specification and tier

Cambridge 0580 Core, 0580 Extended, Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and 4MA1 Higher are four courses with four ceilings and four content lists. Every match starts from the code and tier on your child's entry sheet, because a tutor teaching the wrong one of those pairs wastes a term before anybody notices.

Taught for method marks, not just answers

The student writes and the tutor annotates on a shared screen, so working is seen as it forms. Both boards award method marks, and a right answer with no visible route scores less than a sound wrong one. That is the loss a worked video solution cannot address and a live lesson can.

Tier-restricted content published as a checklist

The topics that sit on Extended and Higher and not on Core and Foundation are set out in a table on this page so you can check, with your child, whether the right list is being taught. Confirm against the current syllabus document; no competitor page in this market publishes the comparison at all.

Rates published with their sources and their uses

Every AED band here is attributed to the provider page or rate study that published it in October 2026, and each row says what that band is worth paying for and what it is not. Paying the specialist rate for drill is the most common way money is wasted on mathematics tutoring.

Online, so the pool is the specification not the postcode

Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Published Dubai in-home rates of AED 180 to AED 500 an hour appear here against AED 150 to AED 300 online, so the travel cost is visible.

Board material referenced, never redistributed

Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundaries belong to Cambridge and Pearson. We cite and link them and supply none of them, and we publish no grade boundaries, because they move per series and because reproducing them would be both misleading and somebody else's copyright.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Lakes: your questions answered

How do I tell whether a maths tutor actually knows my child's specification?+

Ask two questions and listen for speed. First, name three topics that appear on Extended papers and not on Core, or on Higher and not on Foundation - the answer should include something like surds, function notation and the sine or cosine rule, and it should arrive immediately. Second, which formulae are given in the examination for this specification and which must be recalled. A tutor who has taught the course answers both quickly. One who talks about building confidence instead has told you what you needed to know.

Is there a maths tutor in The Lakes who teaches Cambridge 0580 Extended?+

There are maths tutors within a short drive of Emirates Living; whether one of them has recently taught 0580 Extended, knows the current non-calculator and calculator paper split and marks to Cambridge's method-mark conventions is a much narrower question. That is why we match on the code and tier rather than on distance, and why lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India.

Our neighbour's child sits 4MA1 and ours sits 0580. How differently should they revise?+

Two things that change a revision plan. Cambridge 0580's current syllabus examines each tier with a non-calculator paper and a calculator paper, so an entire paper rests on surds, index laws, fraction arithmetic and exact trigonometric values. Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator in both of its equally weighted papers, which shifts the marks toward interpreting the question and recording method. Grade scales also differ: Cambridge Core runs C to G and Extended A* to E, while Pearson Foundation caps at 5 and Higher runs 9 to 4 with an allowed 3.

Which maths topics are Extended or Higher tier only?+

Broadly: surds and exact values; algebraic fractions and harder rearrangement; function notation including composite and inverse functions; trigonometry beyond right-angled triangles, meaning the sine and cosine rules and three-dimensional work; vectors as column quantities with magnitude; histograms with unequal class widths and cumulative frequency; and gradient functions with turning points. None of these appear on a Core or Foundation paper. Use the list as a checklist with your child, then confirm it against the current syllabus document for their cohort on the board's own site.

Is there a non-calculator maths paper in IGCSE now?+

For Cambridge 0580 under the current syllabus, yes - each tier is examined with one non-calculator paper and one calculator paper, which is a change from the arrangement earlier cohorts sat. Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator in both papers. Because this has changed, confirm the syllabus year your child is entered against as well as the code, since a revision plan built on the wrong structure wastes effort. Where a non-calculator paper applies, short frequent drill on surds, indices and fraction arithmetic is the format that produces fluency.

Which calculator does my child need, and does the school supply one?+

The school sets the permitted model and does not usually supply it, so ask the mathematics department directly rather than buying from a general recommendation. The more useful question is whether your child can actually use the one they own: fraction entry, statistical functions, exact-form output and memory recall all save time that converts into marks on a calculator paper. Two sessions of calculator fluency is among the cheapest interventions available, and it is almost never taught in class because it is assumed.

What formulae are given in the exam and what has to be memorised?+

Each specification states this explicitly, and provision is revised, so check the current syllabus document for your child's cohort rather than relying on what an older sibling remembers. The predictable failure is memorising the formulae that are given and never learning the ones that are not. Build the recall list as a single sheet and rehearse it: it is usually a weekend's work rather than a term's, and it removes a category of lost marks entirely. We link the official syllabus documents rather than reproducing them.

Does my child need Additional Mathematics for A Level or IB Higher Level maths?+

Not as a requirement, but it helps. Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics and Pearson 4PM1 Further Pure cover material overlapping the start of a post-16 course, including calculus and extended trigonometry, and a student who has sat one arrives in Year 12 with a real advantage. A student who has not is not disadvantaged provided the transition is planned, usually with a bridging block over the summer. Whether either is offered depends on the school, so ask the mathematics department in Year 10 rather than Year 11.

My child gets the right answer and still loses marks. Why does that happen?+

Because both boards award method marks, and a correct final answer with no visible working earns fewer marks than a wrong answer with a sound method shown. Students who compute mentally lose marks steadily and invisibly for two years. The fix is a habit rather than knowledge: write the step, then the substitution, then the answer, every time, including on questions that feel too easy to bother with. It takes about three weeks of marked written work to become automatic, and it is often worth most of a grade.

What does a grade 9 or an A* actually require beyond correct answers?+

Three things that are rarely taught explicitly. Complete accuracy on routine material, because at that level a dropped sign separates bands. The ability to start an unstructured multi-step question without a prompt, choosing the approach rather than executing a given one. And fluency without a calculator, which carries into every post-16 course. That is a different purchase from a 4-to-6 move, it takes longer and it costs more, so if another subject sits two grades below target, that subject is usually the better hour to buy.

Should my child move from Foundation to Higher tier?+

It depends on the destination and the deadline. Pearson Foundation caps at grade 5 and Cambridge Core at grade C, which cannot satisfy a sixth-form condition asking for a 6 or a B however well the student performs. So if a post-16 route needs more than the cap, the move has to be considered. The constraint is timing: tier decisions effectively lock at the board's final entry deadline, which sits months before the papers. That makes this a Year 10 conversation with the mathematics department, not a spring-term one.

What do IGCSE maths tutors charge in Dubai, and is the top band worth it?+

Published rates run roughly AED 33 to AED 65 for platform student tutors, AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online - one agency lists AED 150 specifically for IGCSE - AED 200 to AED 450 and above for examination-year specialists, with one agency at AED 270 and one premium provider at AED 650. The specialist band is worth it for tier decisions, method-mark diagnosis and a 6-to-9 attempt. It is not worth it for non-calculator drill, which works better cheaply and frequently.

The tutor offered to us normally teaches A Level. Is that a problem for a Year 11?+

Not necessarily, but the failure mode is specific enough to ask about. A post-16 teacher may be entirely fluent in the mathematics and unfamiliar with the paper: which topics are tier-restricted, how method marks are allocated, what a Core paper's question types look like, and how much structure a Foundation candidate is given. The risk is a Core candidate taught like a young A Level student, which makes performance worse rather than better because the practice stops resembling the paper. Ask which specification and tier they taught most recently, and what happened.

Eight weeks from the series and algebra is the weakness. Where do we start?+

With the last page of past papers, not the first. Marks are not evenly distributed and the multi-step chains at the end of each paper are where grades are decided, and they are almost always algebra-dependent. Run timed papers, mark them to the method-mark conventions, and work only on the strands the marking exposes. In parallel, thirty minutes twice a week on manipulation - rearranging, factorising, algebraic fractions - because fluency is about retrieval speed and that needs frequency rather than long sessions.

What happens if no tutor is free who teaches our exact specification and tier?+

We tell you before you book, which no competitor page researched in this market does. Cambridge 0580 Extended and Pearson 4MA1 Higher match quickly. A Core or Foundation candidate needing a tutor comfortable teaching to a capped tier, or a student sitting 0606 or 4PM1 alongside the main qualification, can take longer, and the proposed tutor may be based outside the UAE teaching into Gulf Standard Time. We state the expected wait and the tutor's location first, so the choice is yours rather than a surprise in week three.

Send the code, the tier and one marked paper

Four pieces of information get a Lakes family to a useful first maths lesson: the school, the year, the specification code with its tier, and a photograph of one marked mock paper. The marked paper separates method-mark losses from accuracy, multi-step chains and genuine coverage gaps, and each of those needs a different first lesson. The trial lesson is free, covers one subject, takes no card details, and is spent working a real past question rather than filling in an assessment form. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; nobody arrives at a Lakes address, because home visits are a service we offer only in India.
