IB Maths Tutor in The Lakes

Hiring an IB maths tutor in The Lakes almost always starts as a budget question: what should an hour cost, and what should that hour contain? This page answers it with the dirham bands the Dubai market actually publishes, split by tier and format, then shows where Emirates Living families lose money - paying specialist rates for homework supervision, buying session blocks before anyone has diagnosed the gap, or booking a generalist for Analysis and Approaches HL. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Every AED band on this page is attributed to the provider that published it
  • Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation taught as separate courses
  • One-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with no travel loaded into the rate
  • Exploration coaching against criteria A to E on work the student writes themselves

IB & IGCSE in The Lakes

The cost question, answered before anybody pitches you

Most Lakes parents arrive at this search after a DP1 report that says "working below potential in Mathematics" and a WhatsApp group that has produced four numbers between AED 120 and AED 650 an hour. The spread is real, and it is not random. It tracks three things: whether the tutor teaches the exact course your child sits, whether the rate carries somebody's car across Dubai, and how close the May session is. Understanding those three variables is worth more than any list of tutor photographs, because it tells you which number on your shortlist is a fair price and which is a markup on convenience.

Start with the published market. Dubai providers who show their rates put a budget or university-student tutor between AED 45 and AED 150 an hour online, a qualified subject tutor between AED 150 and AED 300, an IB or IGCSE specialist between AED 200 and AED 450, and a premium named tutor at AED 500 to AED 650. In-home visits sit higher again, roughly AED 180 to AED 500 depending on distance and subject, because an hour of teaching inside a villa in Emirates Living costs the tutor two hours of their evening. None of those figures is our price list; they are what the market says, each attributable to the provider that published it, and they are the benchmark any quote you receive should be measured against.

The expensive mistake is not paying AED 300 an hour. It is paying AED 300 an hour for the wrong hour. A student who cannot reliably differentiate a quotient does not need three hours a week; they need four targeted hours on the chain and quotient rules, then a return to school homework. A student sitting Analysis and Approaches HL who has never seen a Paper 3 investigation under timed conditions is not helped by more Paper 2 practice, however cheap. Every dirham that goes into generic revision when the loss is diagnosable is a dirham that buys nothing, and in a two-year Diploma that compounds into five figures.

The second expensive mistake is the package bought before the diagnostic. Monthly bundles advertised in Dubai run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. A bundle is excellent value once the tutor is right and the plan is agreed. Bought in week one, it locks a family into a pairing nobody has tested, and the cancellation terms are where the goodwill goes. Pay for one or two diagnostic hours, read the written outcome, then commit.

The third is geography. Searching for a maths tutor within driving distance of The Lakes limits the pool to whoever happens to live between Al Barsha, The Greens and Emirates Hills and happens to be free at 17:00. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai - tutors travelling to homes is a service we run only in India - so the pool for a Lakes family is every available IB Mathematics specialist on Gulf Standard Time instead of everyone inside a twenty-minute drive. That is the practical argument for online delivery here, and the rate table further down shows what it saves.

At a glance

  • Market online rate for a qualified maths tutor: AED 150-300 an hour, per Unitors' published IB and IGCSE bands
  • Market in-home rate including travel: AED 180-500 an hour, per Bestimate's 2026 Dubai cost table
  • The Mathematics exploration is 20% of the final grade and the cheapest mark to protect
  • Paper 1 in Analysis and Approaches is sat without a calculator; Applications and Interpretation allows one throughout
  • KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private school fees do not rise for 2026-27, which changes the household maths
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics in an IB school is a twelve-year sequence, and a Lakes family usually meets it at three points: a PYP child who has stopped enjoying number work, an MYP student hitting the criterion-based mark scheme, and a DP student choosing between two courses that cost different amounts to support.

DPAges 16-19 - Years 12-13 - DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Mathematics

Two separate courses, each at Higher and Standard Level. Analysis and Approaches is the algebra, calculus and proof route; Applications and Interpretation is the modelling, statistics and technology route. Standard Level is assessed by Paper 1 at 40%, Paper 2 at 40% and the exploration at 20%. Higher Level adds Paper 3, a two-part investigation, and the split becomes 30%, 30%, 20% and 20%.

In Dubai the route choice is frequently made on timetable availability rather than on the degree the student wants, because not every IB school in the Emirates Living catchment can run four maths courses at once. One paid hour spent on AA versus AI before DP1 begins is the highest-value money in this entire price list.

MYPAges 11-16 - Years 7-11 - MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme Mathematics

Standard and Extended mathematics, assessed against four criteria each marked out of eight: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. A student can be fluent in technique and still sit on a 4, because two of the four criteria reward explanation and investigation rather than answers.

MYP mathematics is where Lakes families most often overpay, because the obvious fix - more practice questions - targets criterion A while the marks are being lost in B and C. A tutor who has read the criteria and marks against them is worth the qualified-tutor band; a tutor who sets worksheets is not.

PYPAges 3-12 - FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme Mathematics

Number, pattern and function, measurement, shape and space, and data handling, taught through transdisciplinary units rather than as a separate subject. Assessment is continuous and teacher-designed, so there is no paper to revise for and no mark scheme to drill.

Primary maths support for a Lakes child is usually a short, cheap engagement - six to eight sessions on place value, fractions or times tables - and should be priced at the lower market band. Paying a Diploma specialist rate for a Year 4 number gap is the clearest waste in the Dubai tutoring market.

IGCSEAges 15-17 - Year 11 into DP1

The IGCSE to Diploma maths bridge

Many students in the Emirates Living catchment sit Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE mathematics at 16 and then enter the Diploma. The gap is not content coverage; it is the jump from a mark scheme that rewards method to one that rewards reasoning, plus unfamiliar notation and a far heavier algebraic load in the first term of Analysis and Approaches.

A six-session summer bridge between Year 11 and DP1 is the single cheapest intervention on this page. Bought in August at the mid band it costs roughly what two months of panic tutoring costs in DP2, and it removes the term-one confidence collapse that generates most of the emergency calls we take from Dubai in October.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Maths tutoring is sold by subject name and bought by component. The list below is organised the way a quote should be written: the course, the level, and the specific thing the hours are for.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

Higher Level

Proof by induction, complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form, integration by substitution and parts, differential equations, Maclaurin series. Marks go missing in the algebra of a correct method rather than in the method itself, which is why timed non-calculator practice matters more than new content.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL

Standard Level

Functions and transformations, sequences and series, trigonometry, differentiation and integration, probability and statistics. Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, so students who have done every exercise with technology are often a grade below their understanding.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL

Higher Level

Matrices, graph theory, Voronoi diagrams, non-linear regression, chi-squared and t-tests, and modelling with differential equations. The hardest marks are interpretive: stating whether a test's conditions are met, and what a coefficient means in the context given.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL

Standard Level

Descriptive statistics, correlation and regression, probability distributions, financial mathematics, and modelling with technology. Students lose marks by reporting output without interpreting it, and by rounding at intermediate steps instead of at the end.

Paper 3 investigations

HL only, both courses

Two extended problems, each building from a guided start to an open generalisation. This component rewards stamina and structured conjecture rather than recall, and it is the one place where a block of four or five tutored hours reliably changes a grade.

The Mathematics exploration

HL and SL, both courses

A twelve to twenty page individual piece of mathematics worth twenty per cent of the grade, marked against five criteria. The student chooses the topic and writes every line; a tutor's role is questions, deadlines and feedback on one draft within the school's internal policy.

Graphic display calculator skills

All DP maths courses

Regression, numerical solving, distributions, and sketching from a table of values. Calculator fluency is worth whole marks in Applications and Interpretation and in Analysis and Approaches Paper 2, and it is cheap to teach in two focused sessions.

MYP Extended Mathematics

MYP 4-5

The route into Analysis and Approaches HL, covering function families, algebraic manipulation and proof-shaped reasoning earlier than Standard mathematics does. Criterion B investigations are the usual mark loss: students find the pattern but do not justify the general rule.

MYP Standard Mathematics

MYP 1-5

Number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, assessed against four criteria out of eight each. The practical tutoring task is translating a 5 in criterion C into clearer written explanation, which is a writing problem wearing a maths hat.

Year 11 to DP1 maths bridge

Transition support

Surds and indices without a calculator, function notation, the factor and remainder theorems, radian measure, and the early differentiation that DP1 assumes in week three. Six sessions over a Dubai summer, priced at the mid band, is the standard shape.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy maths hours, with the honest cost and the honest limitation of each. All of them run over live video on Gulf Standard Time; the differences are rhythm, intensity and price per outcome rather than delivery.

Weekly one-to-one, term-time

One sixty or ninety-minute session a week through the school term, pegged to the school's own scheme of work rather than to a tutoring syllabus. At the qualified-subject band this is the AED 600 to AED 1,200 a month shape Bestimate describes for a weekly hour in Dubai, and it is the right default for a student a grade below where they should be.

  • Session notes after each lesson naming the topic and the next target
  • Pegged to the school's assessment calendar, not to a generic plan
  • Pause weeks around school mocks rather than paid cover
  • Billed per session, so stopping costs nothing beyond the week booked

Component block, four to six sessions

A fixed short engagement on one thing: Paper 3 investigations, non-calculator algebra, chi-squared conditions, or the structure of the exploration. Priced at the specialist band it typically lands between AED 800 and AED 2,700 in total, and it is the format with the clearest relationship between money spent and marks recovered.

  • Written diagnostic before the block is agreed
  • Fixed number of sessions with a stated end point
  • Past-paper work from the school's own copies, never reproduced by us
  • Ends with a one-page handover the school's teacher can read

Exam-run intensive, January to the May session

Two sessions a week through the final term, which is the AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 a month band Bestimate puts on specialist exam-year support. The value here depends entirely on diagnosis quality, because at this point there is no time to teach everything and the only useful plan is a ranked list of recoverable marks.

  • Topic audit against the student's own mock paper, not a generic checklist
  • Timed paper work under real conditions with marks against the published criteria
  • Evening slots after the Emirates Living school run, 16:30 or 19:00 GST
  • Shifts to post-Iftar timing through Ramadan at no change in rate

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in The Lakes

01

What an IB maths tutor in The Lakes actually costs

An IB maths tutor working with a family in The Lakes costs between roughly AED 150 and AED 450 an hour online in the Dubai market as of October 2026, with university-student help below that and named premium tutors above it. In-home visiting rates run higher, roughly AED 180 to AED 500, because the hour you pay for carries the travel either side of it. Those are market figures published by providers in this city, not an IB Gram price list; our own rate is quoted after a trial lesson and depends on course, level and frequency.

The reason the bands exist is specificity. A tutor who can teach GCSE maths accurately is not automatically able to teach Analysis and Approaches HL, where the content includes complex numbers, Maclaurin series and proof by induction and where Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. The pool of people who can teach that course well in any city is small, and small supply is what the specialist band is paying for. Applications and Interpretation HL has the same effect from the other direction: the statistics is genuinely university-level in places, and a tutor who has never run a chi-squared test on real data cannot teach the interpretation marks.

Read the table below as a benchmark rather than a menu. If a quote sits in the premium band, ask what in your child's situation requires it - a specific HL component, a six-week deadline - and if the answer is vague, the band is wrong for you. If a quote sits in the budget band for HL work, ask which course and which papers the tutor has taught, and ask it in those words. The gap between the honest answer and the confident answer is where most of Dubai's wasted tutoring money sits.

Four ways Emirates Living families overpay for maths

  • Ask for a written diagnostic outcome before agreeing to any block of sessions
  • Match the price band to the year group and the component, not to the school's reputation
  • Request the rate quoted separately from any travel or logistics component
  • Set an end date and a review date on the first invoice, not after the third

The first is buying hours instead of buying a diagnosis. A family forwards us a quote for twenty sessions and no written statement of what the student cannot currently do. Twenty sessions of unfocused support at the mid band is AED 3,000 to AED 6,000, and a two-hour diagnostic that produces a ranked list of recoverable topics costs a fraction of that and changes what the twenty sessions are for. Ask for the diagnosis in writing before you agree to the block.

The second is paying the specialist band for primary and lower-MYP work. A Year 5 child who has not secured place value, or an MYP 2 student stuck on negative indices, needs careful, patient teaching at the qualified band. The Diploma specialist whose value is Paper 3 and exploration supervision is not better at times tables; they are simply more expensive. Match the band to the problem.

The third is paying twice for the same hour through travel. An in-home tutor crossing Dubai to reach the Emirates Living gates at 17:00 has to recover that time, and it appears either as a higher rate or as a quiet surcharge nobody itemises. The fourth is the automatic renewal: a monthly bundle that made sense in November and is still running in March after the original gap closed. Diary a review date when you start, and treat the bundle as something that ends by default rather than continues by default.

None of these is a reason not to spend money on maths. They are reasons to know what each dirham is for, which is the difference between a tutoring budget and a tutoring habit.

03

Tutoring cost in context: fees, hours and a two-year plan

Tutoring never arrives as a standalone line in a household budget; it lands next to school fees, buses, activities and exam entries. The useful question is not whether AED 250 an hour is expensive in the abstract, but what a year of it looks like beside everything else a Lakes family already pays for a Diploma student. KHDA's announcement of 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, made under the emirate's second economic incentives package, is the right anchor: for most families the fee line is flat this year, which is precisely when a maths plan can be funded deliberately rather than in a panic.

The table below converts hourly bands into the periods families actually budget in. The two-year figures are the ones worth sitting with. One session a week for the whole Diploma at the mid band is a serious commitment, and a family who sees that total up front usually makes a better decision than one discovering it a month at a time. Frequently the better plan is a lighter year in DP1 with a bridge in the summer, then a heavier final term - the same total money, spent where it converts.

Exam entry costs are worth a note of their own. A student entered through their school pays through the school; a private candidate pays the centre directly and the figure varies by centre, so no single number belongs on a page like this. Ask the school's examinations officer for the written schedule rather than relying on a tutoring site.

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: the choice that sets the bill

No decision in a Lakes family's Diploma affects the tutoring budget more than which maths course the student takes, and very few are made with less information. The two courses are not harder and easier versions of each other. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic: proof, calculus, trigonometric identities, and a Paper 1 sat with no calculator at all. Applications and Interpretation is interpretive and technological: modelling, statistics, graph theory, and a calculator in every paper. A student who thinks numerically but dislikes abstraction will spend fewer tutored hours on the second course than the first, and vice versa.

The university dimension matters and is often overstated by both sides. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics courses in the United Kingdom and the United States list Analysis and Approaches, usually at Higher Level, in their published entry requirements. Business, psychology, design and several life-science routes accept Applications and Interpretation comfortably. The honest position is that the requirement belongs to the specific university and the specific course, in writing, on that institution's own admissions page - and that a tutoring site is the wrong place to learn it.

What this page can tell you is the cost consequence. A student placed in Analysis and Approaches HL against their grain is the most expensive configuration in Dubai tutoring: they need weekly support for two years, then an intensive before the session, and the total runs well into five figures. The same student in Applications and Interpretation HL frequently needs a short block each term. One consultation before DP1 subject selection, paid at the specialist band, is the cheapest hour on this entire page.

The exploration: twenty per cent of the grade, and the strict limits on help

The Mathematics exploration is worth twenty per cent of the final grade in every DP maths course, at both levels, and it is marked against five criteria totalling twenty marks. It is also the component where parents most often ask what a tutor is allowed to do, and where the wrong answer ends a Diploma. The boundary is not subtle: the student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes every word. A tutor teaches technique, asks questions, holds deadlines and gives feedback on a draft within the school's own internal policy. Anybody offering to supply finished text is offering the student an academic-honesty investigation.

Within that boundary the gains are real and cheap. Most explorations lose marks in presentation and communication rather than in mathematics: undefined variables, graphs without axis labels, a twenty-eight page document where twelve focused pages would score higher, and a reflection section that summarises rather than evaluates. Those are coachable in three or four sessions, and because criteria A, B, C and D account for fourteen of the twenty marks, they are better value than another pass through the content.

Timing is the other lever. A student who starts the exploration in the spring of DP1 has time for one proper draft and one round of feedback. A student who starts in the final term is paying specialist rates for crisis management while also revising for papers. The cheapest exploration is the early one, and the table below shows where the marks sit.

Online versus a tutor at the gate: the Emirates Living arithmetic

This comparison is usually presented as a question about learning style. In The Lakes it is mostly a question about time and supply. The community is a gated villa estate off Sheikh Zayed Road with internal cluster roads, and a tutor arriving for a 17:00 session from Al Barsha or the Marina is committing ninety minutes of driving to deliver sixty minutes of teaching. That cost is in the rate whether it is itemised or not, and it also decides who is available: only tutors who live close enough and are free in that window.

IB Gram delivers to The Lakes as one-to-one live video, and the reason is not cost alone. A Lakes family wanting Analysis and Approaches HL with strong Paper 3 teaching should be choosing from every available specialist on Gulf Standard Time, not from the subset who can reach Emirates Living before dinner. Home visits are not something IB Gram sells anywhere in the UAE - that is an India-only service - and the page would be dishonest if it implied otherwise. The trade is real: a parent cannot sit in the next room and overhear the lesson. What replaces it is a written note after each session, a shared screen the student can revisit, and a recording policy agreed in advance.

For maths specifically, online delivery has a technical advantage worth naming. Mathematics is written, not spoken, and a shared whiteboard with both parties writing keeps the working visible in a way a notebook on a dining table does not. Calculator teaching is easier too: the tutor can display the same model the student is holding, which is awkward across a kitchen table and trivial on screen.

The May session counted backwards from a Lakes kitchen table

  • Twelve months out: confirm the maths course and level with the school in writing
  • Nine months out: exploration topic agreed and the first mathematics attempted
  • Six months out: mock series marked against published criteria, weak topics ranked
  • Three months out: timed papers under exam conditions, one per fortnight minimum
  • Six weeks out: nothing new taught; recoverable marks only, ranked by yield

Dubai IB schools sit the May session, and the budgeting mistake families make is treating May as the deadline. It is not; it is the last in a chain of deadlines that start in the previous calendar year, and the expensive tutoring is always the tutoring bought after one of the earlier ones has passed. Working backwards from the papers rather than forwards from today changes what a given month's money should buy.

A DP2 student's internal deadlines - exploration drafts, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge - are set by the school, not by the IB, and they cluster in the autumn and early winter term. That clustering is why November and December are the months when Lakes families most often double their tutoring spend: three internal deadlines and a mock series land inside six weeks. A plan that funds exploration coaching in DP1's summer term removes most of that collision for the price of four sessions.

We do not publish IB session or results dates on these pages. The IB's own site is the only acceptable source for them and it cannot be checked reliably by an automated process, so a specific date here would be a guess dressed up as a fact. Ask your child's Diploma coordinator for the school's dated internal calendar and the official session timetable, and build the plan on that document. Cambridge and Pearson publish their International GCSE timetables openly, which is why those dates appear on our IGCSE pages and IB dates do not.

08

Paying a maths tutor legally in Dubai, and what to ask for

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated, which is useful information when you are comparing quotes. Individuals giving private lessons need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories are broad: teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own service page, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists a two working-day completion time and is applied for through the MoHRE app, website and e-services system.

Two consequences for a Lakes family. First, a tutor who tells you no permit exists or that it is optional is wrong: individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted as unverified. Second, the code of conduct attached to the permit, and Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for school staff, bar a teacher from tutoring students enrolled at their own school. If the plan under discussion is your child's own classroom teacher, privately, that is the arrangement to decline.

A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal again: it needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram is an online matching platform, not a licensed Dubai training institute, and holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, IB or Cambridge accreditation. Any page telling you its tutors are regulator-approved is telling you something that cannot be true of an online platform.

09

What a trial lesson should tell you before you spend anything

The first lesson is a diagnostic, and it should be treated as the cheapest piece of market research available. IB Gram offers one trial lesson at no charge - thirty minutes, one per family, no card details taken and nothing to cancel - and the point is not to be charmed. The point is to find out whether this tutor can name, by the end of the session, the two or three specific things standing between your child and the next grade. A tutor who finishes a trial with 'we will build confidence' has not done the job. A tutor who finishes with 'she can integrate but she cannot choose a substitution, and her Paper 1 algebra breaks under time pressure' has.

Ask three questions in the trial. Which papers have you taught for this exact course, and in which years? What is the first topic you would work on with my child, and why that one? What will I receive in writing after each session? The answers tell you whether you are buying a specialist or a generalist, and whether the band you are being quoted matches what you are getting.

Then decide on a short commitment. Four sessions is enough to see whether the diagnosis was right and whether the student turns up willingly. If it works, extend; if it does not, change tutor without having prepaid a term. A family in The Lakes who spends two trial lessons and four paid sessions choosing carefully will usually spend less across a Diploma than one who commits to twenty sessions in October on a recommendation from a neighbour.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Lakes

The Lakes sits inside Emirates Living, and the neighbouring communities share its schools, its traffic and - in our experience of quotes families forward to us - its price expectations. Here is how the cost conversation differs a few minutes either side.

The Lakes

Villa clusters including Deema, Ghadeer, Hattan, Maeen and Zulal, with the Lakes Club at the centre. Quotes families here forward to us cluster at the specialist band, largely because in-home tutors price the Emirates Living gate-to-door time into the hour.

Immediately north, sharing the Emirates International School Meadows catchment. Families here often compare an in-home rate against an online rate for the same tutor and find the gap is almost entirely travel.

The Springs

Townhouses with a younger average child age, so the typical spend is a short primary or MYP engagement at the lower band rather than a two-year Diploma plan.

Emirates Hills

The premium end of the local market, where AED 500 to AED 650 named-tutor rates are quoted most often. A Lakes family shopping on an Emirates Hills referral is usually being quoted a band above what their need requires.

The Greens and The Views

Apartment communities with the shortest school runs in the cluster, which makes evening slots easier to fill and in-home rates slightly softer. The online rate is unaffected, which is the point.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Twelve to twenty minutes down Sheikh Zayed Road, and the densest supply of tutoring agencies in the city. Marina-based in-home tutors routinely add a surcharge for the Emirates Living run that is never itemised on the invoice.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

Where several of the IB and British schools this catchment feeds actually sit. A tutor who teaches at one of those schools cannot tutor their own enrolled students, which quietly shrinks the local pool a family is really choosing from.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Lakes

The Lakes and Emirates Living

The schools immediately around the community, serving The Lakes, The Meadows, The Springs and Emirates Hills. Between them they run IB PYP, MYP and Diploma alongside British-curriculum IGCSE and A Level, which is why one street can contain children sitting four different mathematics qualifications in the same year.

  • Emirates International School - Meadows
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Regent International School, The Greens
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Safa Community School

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and the wider Diploma catchment

A fifteen to twenty-five minute run from The Lakes, and where most of the area's Diploma places sit. Mathematics provision varies: some of these schools timetable all four DP maths courses, others run two, and that single scheduling fact decides which course a Lakes student can actually take.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai College

Schools are named as local context so families can recognise their own catchment; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any of them is implied, and inspection ratings should be read on web.khda.gov.ae rather than taken from a tutoring page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the course, not just the subject

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, the school, and the year group. For MYP, the year and the criteria scores from the last report. This single detail is what lets us quote a band honestly instead of guessing.

  2. 02

Send the evidence you already have

The last report, a marked mock paper, or a photograph of a piece of homework that went wrong. A marked paper is worth more than any description of the problem, because it shows where the method held and where the algebra collapsed.

  3. 03

Take the trial lesson and read the write-up

Thirty minutes at no charge, one per family, no card details. Afterwards you receive the tutor's written view of the two or three recoverable gaps and a suggested first block. If that document is vague, say so before you book anything.

  4. 04

Agree a block with an end date

Four to six sessions on a named target, at an hourly rate quoted in AED per session rather than as a bundle. Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time around the Emirates Living school run, typically from 16:30 or after 19:00.

  5. 05

Review against the school's own marks

At the end of the block, compare the school's assessment marks with the starting point and decide whether to continue, change the target, or stop. Stopping is a normal outcome and costs nothing beyond the sessions already taught.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates you can audit

Every dirham figure on this page is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, with the month it was read. You can check each one and then judge our quote against the market instead of against a feeling.

Course-level matching

A tutor is proposed for Analysis and Approaches HL or Applications and Interpretation SL specifically, with the papers they have taught named. Maths is not one subject at Diploma level and matching by subject name is how families end up a band too low.

No travel inside the price

Lessons are one-to-one over live video, so the hour you pay for is an hour of teaching rather than an hour of teaching plus a drive through Al Khail Road traffic that somebody has to fund.

A clear academic-honesty line

The student chooses the exploration topic, does the mathematics and writes every line. We coach, question and give feedback on one draft within the school's policy, and we say so on every page rather than in small print.

Short commitments by default

Blocks of four to six sessions with a stated end date and per-session billing. No term-long prepayment, no automatic renewal, and a review against the school's own marks before anybody asks you to continue.

Scheduling built around the school run

Slots from 16:30 once Emirates Living buses have arrived, or after 19:00 for families who prefer the evening, moving to post-Iftar timing through Ramadan at no change in rate.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Lakes: your questions answered

How much should an IB maths tutor for a family in The Lakes cost per hour in 2026?+

Published Dubai rates put a qualified online maths tutor at AED 150-300 an hour and an IB specialist at AED 200-450 or more; university-student help starts around AED 45-65 and named premium tutors reach AED 650. In-home visiting rates run roughly AED 180-500 because travel is inside the hour. Those are market figures from providers in this city as of October 2026, not an IB Gram price list. Our rate is quoted after the trial lesson and depends on the course, the level and how often you want sessions. Judge any quote by asking what in your child's situation justifies the band.

Is an online maths tutor genuinely cheaper than a home tutor for Emirates Living?+

On published market bands, yes, and the gap is mostly travel rather than teaching quality. Online one-to-one in Dubai runs AED 150-450 an hour; in-home one-to-one runs AED 180-500 for the same level of tutor, because a visit to a gated villa community costs the tutor roughly ninety minutes to deliver sixty. The second difference is supply: online you choose from every specialist on Gulf Standard Time rather than those who can reach The Lakes by 17:00. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so for a Lakes family the comparison is between our online delivery and a local in-home provider.

Why do IB maths rates sit above IGCSE maths rates in the Dubai market?+

Supply. Unitors publishes IGCSE tutoring from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200, and the pattern holds across providers. The content is the reason: Analysis and Approaches HL includes proof by induction, complex numbers and Maclaurin series, Paper 1 is sat with no calculator, and Paper 3 is an open investigation. Far fewer tutors can teach that reliably than can teach IGCSE Extended maths, and scarcity sets the band. If a quote prices HL Diploma work at IGCSE rates, ask which papers the tutor has taught and in which years before taking it as good value.

How many sessions a week does an Analysis and Approaches HL student actually need?+

One a week through DP1 is the usual shape, rising to two in the final term if the mock series shows several unrecovered topics. That maps onto Bestimate's Dubai monthly estimates of AED 600-1,200 for a weekly hour and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. More than two is rarely productive, because the student also needs time to attempt problems alone. The exception is a short component block, four to six sessions on Paper 3 or on non-calculator algebra, run at higher intensity over a fortnight and then stopped.

Should we buy a package of ten or twenty sessions up front?+

Not before a diagnostic. Bundles advertised in Dubai run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits, and they are good value once the tutor is right and the plan is agreed. Bought in week one they commit you to a pairing nobody has tested, and the cancellation terms are where families lose money. Take the trial, agree a block of four to six sessions with a stated end date, and only then consider a bundle. Diary a review date on the first invoice so the arrangement ends by default rather than continuing by default.

Is the rate in The Lakes quoted per hour or per lesson, and does it include VAT?+

Ask both questions in writing before the first paid session, of us or of anybody else. A rate quoted per hour against a ninety-minute lesson is a different number from a rate quoted per session, and the two are mixed up constantly in this market. On tax, the only thing a tutoring page should state is whether its own quoted figure is inclusive; the VAT treatment of tuition in the UAE is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority and not something to take from a tutoring site. Our quotes state the session length, the figure and whether tax is included.

Do we keep paying through Dubai school holidays and the summer break?+

Only if you want sessions. Billing per session rather than per term means a pause costs nothing, and for most students a genuine break is more useful than continuity for its own sake. The exception is the summer between Year 11 and DP1, where six sessions on surds, indices, function notation and early differentiation is the cheapest intervention available - it prevents the term-one collapse that generates most of the emergency calls we take from Dubai families in October. Short summer work before a transition year is worth funding; holiday cover for its own sake usually is not.

Can one tutor cover both Maths AA and Physics to save money?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Analysis and Approaches and Diploma Physics overlap in calculus, vectors and graph interpretation, and a tutor strong in both can cut scheduling and sometimes the effective rate. The caution is depth: a physics teacher who is comfortable with SL maths is not automatically able to teach Paper 3 at Higher Level, and a maths specialist may not know the current physics assessment structure. Ask which of the two they have taught to examination and in which years. If the answer is one of them, use two tutors for the component that matters most.

Is the Mathematics exploration worth paying a specialist to support?+

For most students, yes, and in a small number of sessions. The exploration is twenty per cent of the final grade, and fourteen of its twenty marks sit in presentation, communication, personal engagement and reflection rather than in the mathematics itself. Those are coachable: an undefined variable, an unlabelled graph, a reflection that summarises instead of evaluating. Three or four sessions in the spring of DP1 typically do more than the same hours spent on content. The limits are strict - the student chooses the topic, does the mathematics and writes every line, and a tutor gives feedback on one draft within the school's policy.

Does a private maths tutor working with Dubai families need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. Individuals giving private lessons in the UAE need a private tuition work permit from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Applications go through the MoHRE app, website or e-services system, and MoHRE's service page lists a two working-day completion. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so treat quoted amounts as unverified.

What is the cheapest honest route from a 4 to a 5 in Applications and Interpretation SL?+

A diagnostic, a ranked list, and four to six sessions on the top two items. At Standard Level in this course the recurring losses are predictable: reporting calculator output without interpreting it, rounding at intermediate steps, missing the conditions for a chi-squared test, and losing marks on financial mathematics through unit errors. Those are fixable in a short block rather than a term-long engagement. Add one session on calculator fluency, which is worth whole marks in both papers. The expensive route is open-ended weekly support that never names a target; the cheap route starts with a written diagnosis.

Do Dubai tutoring rates climb in the run-up to the May session?+

Effective prices do, for two reasons. Specialist availability thins through the final term, so the tutors still free are often the ones at the higher bands, and families booking in March usually want two sessions a week rather than one. Bestimate's monthly estimates reflect that pattern, with specialist exam-year support at AED 1,000-2,000 or more a month against AED 600-1,200 for a weekly hour earlier in the year. The practical answer is to book the specialist you want in the autumn at the frequency you can sustain, rather than paying for intensity in April because nothing was done in November.

What should I send a tutoring provider to get an accurate quote rather than a range?+

Five things: the exact course and level, the school and year group, the most recent report with its grade or criteria scores, one marked piece of work that went badly, and the days and times that genuinely work around your school run. A marked paper is the most valuable of these, because it shows whether marks are lost in method, in algebra or under time pressure. With those five, a provider can name a band and a first target. Without them, any figure quoted is a guess, and guesses in this market drift upwards.

What happens to our money if the first tutor turns out to be the wrong match?+

With per-session billing, nothing beyond the sessions already taught. That is the practical reason to avoid prepaying a term: a mismatch in week two should cost you two sessions, not twenty. Tell us what did not work - pace, explanation style, the time slot, the subject depth - and we propose a different tutor from the same course specialism. Say it early rather than politely waiting. A student who has quietly disengaged for a month is a more expensive problem to solve than a swap made after the second lesson.

Is a small group class in The Lakes better value than one-to-one maths tutoring?+

It depends entirely on whether everyone in the group shares the same gap. Group rates in Dubai run roughly AED 60-200 an hour per student against AED 150-450 for one-to-one, so the saving is real. It evaporates when the group covers a topic your child already has and skips the one they do not, which is the common outcome with Diploma maths because the losses are individual. Groups work for broad revision and for younger students building fluency. For a diagnosed topic gap at Higher Level, four one-to-one sessions usually beat twelve group hours.

Start with one hour that tells you what the next ten are for

If you are weighing quotes for an IB maths tutor in The Lakes, the useful next step is not another recommendation from the community group. It is thirty minutes with a tutor who teaches your child's exact course, followed by a written note naming the two or three specific gaps and what to do about them. That costs nothing, takes one per family, and needs no card details. From there you can price a block of four to six sessions honestly, against the market bands on this page, and decide with numbers rather than hope. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, around the Emirates Living school run.
