IGCSE Science Tutor in The Lakes

An IGCSE science tutor in The Lakes has to fit into a week that is already full. In Year 10 the science timetable triples, the Emirates Living school day ends between 2:30pm and 3:30pm, and activities run until about five. IB Gram teaches IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, so a session starts when your child sits down rather than when somebody finishes a drive across Dubai, and the board your school actually uses decides what gets taught.

  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel syllabuses taught by code, not by guesswork
  • Weekday evening, Friday morning and weekend slots in Gulf Standard Time
  • Entry deadlines and results dates drawn from the boards' own pages

IB & IGCSE in The Lakes

Year 10 is when science stops being one subject

Until Year 9 science is one line on a timetable. In Year 10 it becomes two or three, with separate teachers, separate books and separate examinations at the end, and the family week has to absorb that without anybody announcing it. A parent in The Lakes usually notices in the second half of the autumn term, when three sets of homework start arriving and the first assessment comes back lower than expected in one subject and fine in the other two. That is the point at which an IGCSE science tutor gets searched for, and it is the right point, because the two-year course is still long enough for a plan to work.

The decisions that matter were made before then, though, and they are worth understanding. Your child is either taking three separate sciences, a double award, or a single combined science, and the three are different qualifications with different content, different numbers of grades and different consequences at sixteen and eighteen. They are also sitting either a Cambridge syllabus or a Pearson Edexcel one, and those two boards assess practical skills in genuinely different ways. A tutor who does not know which of those six combinations your child is in cannot help efficiently, and a parent who does know can brief a tutor in one sentence.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For a Year 10 or Year 11 household in Emirates Living the format is mostly a scheduling benefit. Sessions can be placed after activities finish, on the shortened Friday most Dubai schools run, or on a weekend morning, and they can move by half an hour on a day when a fixture overruns. Nobody loses an hour to Sheikh Zayed Road at either end.

What follows is the detail a Lakes parent can act on. The triple-against-double decision, set out with the syllabus codes. Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel, compared on the things that change how a student revises. The practical component and what happens to it if lessons are on a screen. Where marks are actually lost in each paper. The Cambridge and Pearson calendars counted backwards from the entry deadline, taken from the boards' own published pages, because entries close months before the exams and families routinely discover that too late. The Ministry of Education equivalency rule, which is five subjects and not six whatever one ranking page tells you. And what the Dubai market charges, with a note on how to verify each figure yourself.

If you only read one part, read the calendar table. It is the one that has a deadline attached.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four stages matter to a Lakes family thinking about IGCSE science: the years that prepare for it, the examination itself on either board, and the two routes out of it at sixteen. Each one changes what a tutor should be working on.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Sciences

Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 as separate qualifications, each tiered into Core and Extended, plus Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as a double award and Combined Science 0653 as a single award. Each single science is examined by a multiple-choice paper worth 30%, a theory paper worth 50% and a practical component worth 20%, taken either as a practical test or as a written alternative to practical.

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series, with March available for some syllabuses, and every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones. The board states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Lakes families should take the zone timetable from the school's exams officer, not from a generic online version.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Sciences

Biology 4BI1, Chemistry 4CH1 and Physics 4PH1, untiered and graded 9 to 1, plus Science Double Award 4SD0. The structural difference that matters for revision is that practical skills are assessed inside the written papers rather than in a separate practical examination, so a student meets method evaluation, variables and uncertainty as written questions throughout rather than in one timed laboratory session.

Pearson runs International GCSE examinations in May and June and again in November. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so always work from the live official timetable rather than a restated date.

Lower SecondaryAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9 and Cambridge Checkpoint

The years that decide how hard Year 10 feels. Cambridge offers Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, which give a school a measured picture before the IGCSE course begins. Students who arrive in Year 10 without secure graph skills, unit handling or rearranging of simple formulae lose time in all three sciences at once rather than in one.

In Emirates Living this is the stage at which families most often ask whether a child should aim at three sciences or a double award. The honest answer depends on mathematics as much as on science, and a short diagnostic in Year 9 is a cheaper way to settle it than a difficult first term of Year 10.

Next stepAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level and IB Diploma routes at sixteen

What IGCSE science keeps open. A student with three separate sciences at Extended or at a high Edexcel grade can take any science forward to A Level or to the IB Diploma at Higher Level. A student with a single combined award will usually need to discuss entry with the school, and some competitive courses set subject-specific expectations at sixteen. This is why the triple-or-double decision is worth taking seriously in Year 9.

Within reach of The Lakes both routes exist: Dubai British School Emirates Hills, Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School run A Levels, while Emirates International School Meadows and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills run the IB Diploma. Several Lakes students switch systems at sixteen, which makes the IGCSE grade profile matter more than usual.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below is organised by syllabus code rather than by subject name, because the code is what decides the papers, the tiering and the practical arrangement. Ask your school for the code before you book anything; it takes one email and it saves a term of mismatched teaching.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology

0610 · Core and Extended

Three components: a 40-question multiple-choice paper at 30%, a theory paper at 50% and a practical component at 20%. Extended adds content as well as grade range. Most marks are lost on extended-response questions about experimental design and on the precise terminology that Biology mark schemes require.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry

0620 · Core and Extended

Same three-component structure as Biology. The predictable trouble spots are moles and reacting masses, where arithmetic errors cost whole questions, and organic chemistry at Extended level, where students who learned reactions as a list cannot answer a question that asks them to predict.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics

0625 · Core and Extended

The same structure again, and the science in which The Lakes families ask for help most often. Electricity is the usual sticking point, followed by anything requiring rearrangement of a formula under time pressure. The practical component rewards method evaluation rather than manual dexterity.

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences

0654 · Double Award

Covers biology, chemistry and physics content and reports two grades rather than three. It carries less content per discipline than three separate sciences, which suits a student whose timetable or workload cannot hold triple science, and it keeps most sixth-form routes open if the grades are strong.

Cambridge Combined Science

0653 · Single Award

One grade covering all three disciplines, with the lightest content load of the three options. Students taking it who later want a science at A Level or Higher Level should raise that with the school early, because bridging work is usually needed before sixteen rather than after.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology

4BI1 · untiered, graded 9-1

Two written papers with practical skills assessed inside them. Students moving from a Cambridge school mid-course notice the difference immediately, because there is no separate practical paper to revise for and instead every paper can ask an experimental-method question.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry

4CH1 · untiered, graded 9-1

Untiered, so there is no Core and Extended decision and every candidate sits the same papers. Quantitative chemistry carries real weight, and the practical questions embedded in the written papers reward a student who can criticise a method rather than describe one.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics

4PH1 · untiered, graded 9-1

Formula handling, unit conversion and graph interpretation decide most grades here. Because practical skills sit inside the written papers, a student who has never been asked to identify a control variable in writing is at a disadvantage from the first paper.

Pearson Edexcel Science Double Award

4SD0 · two grades

The Edexcel equivalent of a double award, reporting two grades across the three disciplines. Worth confirming with the school which papers are sat and in which series, since the structure differs from the single-science specifications in both content and paper count.

IGCSE Mathematics alongside science

Cambridge 0580 and Edexcel 4MA1

The hidden dependency. Rearranging formulae, handling standard form, reading gradients and converting units are mathematics skills examined inside science papers. A student losing marks across all three sciences at once usually has a mathematics problem rather than three science problems.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover almost every IGCSE science enquiry from this neighbourhood, and the right one depends on how many sciences your child carries and how close the series is.

One science, one weekly slot

A standing sixty or ninety-minute session in a single subject, placed after activities finish. This is the usual Year 10 arrangement: enough contact to keep pace with the school's sequence and to clear the backlog underneath it, without taking over the week.

  • Start times from 5pm to 8:30pm Gulf Standard Time
  • Same tutor each week, with a written note after every session
  • Session content follows the school's scheme of work, checked against the syllabus

Two sciences on one evening, in sequence

Back-to-back slots in two different subjects, often with two different tutors, on the night that is reliably free. Because nothing has to travel between them there is no gap to pay for, and a Year 11 student can cover Physics and Chemistry in a single committed evening.

  • Two subjects, two specialists, one evening
  • Session lengths split unevenly where one subject needs more
  • Works for siblings in sequence as well as for one student in two subjects

Pre-series block on papers and practicals

A concentrated run in the weeks before a June or November series, aimed at the papers themselves: multiple-choice timing, theory-paper structure, and the practical component in whichever form your child's board uses. Content gaps are filled only where a paper has exposed them.

  • Full papers sat to time and marked live against official criteria
  • Practical-paper technique or embedded practical questions, by board
  • Official papers cited and linked, never reproduced or supplied

01

Triple science, double award or combined: the decision that shapes the week

Most parents discover their child's science route after it has been chosen. It is worth knowing precisely which one it is, because the three options are different qualifications rather than different amounts of effort. Three separate sciences produce three grades and the most content. A double award, Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 or Pearson Edexcel Science Double Award 4SD0, produces two grades and covers all three disciplines at reduced depth. A single combined award, Cambridge Combined Science 0653, produces one grade and carries the lightest load.

The trade-off is real in both directions. Triple science eats more of the week, which in a Lakes household competing with activities and a long Al Barsha commute is not a trivial cost, and a student who is stretched across three subjects can end with three mediocre grades instead of two strong ones. A double award can be the better academic decision rather than a lesser one. On the other hand, the triple route keeps every sixth-form option open without discussion, and in a neighbourhood where students switch between A Level and the IB Diploma at sixteen, that flexibility has a value.

The honest test is mathematics rather than enthusiasm. A student who can rearrange a formula, handle standard form and read a gradient without hesitating will cope with three sciences. A student who cannot will find that the same weakness costs them marks in all three subjects simultaneously, which looks like a science problem and is not. A Year 9 diagnostic settles the question in an hour, and it is a considerably cheaper way to decide than a difficult first term.

Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel: the same science, two different examinations

Two children in neighbouring Lakes villas can be taught the same chemistry and sit genuinely different examinations. The boards differ on tiering, on grading scale and, most importantly for revision, on how practical skills are assessed. A tutor who assumes the wrong board will spend sessions preparing for a paper your child will never sit, and parents usually discover this in February of Year 11.

Cambridge single sciences are tiered: Core candidates and Extended candidates sit different papers and are eligible for different grade ranges, with Extended the route to the top grades. The practical component is a separate paper, taken either as a practical test or as a written alternative to practical, and it carries twenty per cent. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, graded 9 to 1, and assess practical skills inside the written papers rather than in a separate examination.

That last difference changes the whole shape of revision. A Cambridge student has one identifiable practical paper to prepare for, with its own technique and its own past papers. An Edexcel student has no such paper and instead faces experimental-method questions distributed through both written papers, which means practical reasoning has to be a habit rather than a revision topic. Confirm which board and which code with the school's exams officer. One email settles it, and every decision below depends on the answer. It also settles the grading scale, which matters when a Lakes family is comparing a sibling's A* against a 9 and trying to work out whether the two children are doing equally well.

The practical component when the tutoring happens on a screen

This is the fair question about online science tuition, and it deserves a direct answer rather than reassurance. A tutor on a screen cannot hand your child a burette. What they can do is teach the thinking that the practical component actually examines, and on both boards that thinking is the larger part of the marks.

On a Cambridge syllabus the practical component is twenty per cent, taken either as a practical test or as a written alternative to practical. The alternative-to-practical route is a written paper from beginning to end: read a method, identify the independent and controlled variables, spot the flaw, plot the data, judge the conclusion, suggest a specific improvement. Not one mark in it depends on having handled apparatus. The practical test does involve real equipment, and that work happens in the school laboratory where the board requires it, but the marks still go to recording, processing and evaluating rather than to dexterity.

On a Pearson Edexcel syllabus the practical reasoning is distributed through the written papers, which makes it even more amenable to screen teaching, because the skill being built is written argument about method. In both cases the useful session has a method on a shared screen, a data table being built live, and a tutor asking why the third reading was repeated. A Lakes family that has tried both formats usually notices the advantage in the fortnight before a mock, when what helps is a shared document rather than a shared room.

04

Where IGCSE science marks are actually lost, paper by paper

Grades in IGCSE science are rarely lost evenly. They are lost in identifiable places, and the places are consistent enough across Dubai cohorts to be worth naming. On the Cambridge structure, the multiple-choice paper carries thirty per cent and is lost to pace rather than knowledge: students spend too long on the first ten questions and guess the last ten. The theory paper carries fifty per cent and is lost to command terms, with students describing when the question says explain, or giving two marks' worth of content in a four-mark space.

The practical component, at twenty per cent, is lost to vocabulary more than to technique. Independent variable, dependent variable, control variable, repeat, anomaly, resolution and uncertainty all have precise meanings in a mark scheme, and a student who uses them loosely cannot score the marks even when their reasoning is correct. This is the single most fixable component in the whole qualification, and it is also the one most often left until the final month.

Across all three sciences the common thread is mathematics. Rearranging a formula, converting units, handling standard form and reading a gradient are examined inside science papers without being taught there. A student dropping marks in Biology, Chemistry and Physics simultaneously almost never has three separate problems. Diagnosing that correctly saves a family a term of the wrong tuition, and it is the first thing a sensible tutor checks. The quickest version of the check is to take a question the student got wrong and ask them to redo only the algebra in it.

05

The exam year counted backwards from the entry deadline

Families plan from the examination date. Boards plan from the entry deadline, and that deadline falls a long way earlier than most parents expect. A candidate at a school near The Lakes has two Cambridge series open to them, June and November, and the February and March series offered to India only is not one of them. Take the June series: the papers sit in June, the entry that fixes which papers they are is made back in the spring, forecast grades are submitted a few weeks before the exam period, results land in August and certificates follow later. The practical implication of that order is the part worth keeping: by the time a student feels the pressure of the exam, the decision about what they are sitting was taken months earlier, by adults working from a report that may already be out of date.

Pearson works the same way with different dates. International GCSE examinations run in May and June and again in November; the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so the responsible thing is to work from the live official timetable rather than from any date restated on a page like this one.

One Cambridge detail catches UAE families specifically. Every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. A parent in The Lakes should therefore get the timetable from their own school's exams officer rather than from a search result. Counting backwards from the dates the school gives you is how a revision plan stops being a guess.

Three sciences, one Year 11 week, and the Lakes afternoon

The scheduling problem in Year 11 is arithmetic rather than willpower. Three sciences generate three sets of homework and three revision streams, and the household window that can absorb them is narrower than it looks. Most Emirates Living schools finish between 2:30pm and 3:30pm. A child commuting back from Al Barsha is home closer to four. Activities run to about five on the days they are scheduled, and the hour after that is dinner and set work rather than new learning.

What works in practice is to stop trying to fit everything into weekday evenings. Place one science in a reliable late weekday slot, from about 6:30pm, where fixtures cannot reach it. Put a second on another evening rather than in the same week as the first. Use the shortened Friday that many Dubai schools run for the longer work: full papers to time, practical technique, and the backlog that a sixty-minute evening session can never clear. Keep weekend mornings for the pre-series blocks when the series is close.

The format makes that pattern possible rather than theoretical. Because no one travels, two subjects can run back-to-back on one evening with two different specialists, a session can shift by half an hour on the day of a late fixture, and a Friday morning slot costs nothing extra in logistics. The households that sustain tuition across two full IGCSE years are generally the ones that placed the slot late enough and kept one weekend window in reserve, not the ones with the most motivated child.

Ministry of Education equivalency: five subjects, and which ones do not count

The reason IGCSE grades matter beyond sixth-form entry is equivalency. A student who wants a UAE-recognised secondary certificate on the British track has to satisfy a Ministry of Education rule, and the rule is specific. Students must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with either one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

The detail that catches families out is the exclusion. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count. A student with five passes of which two are Arabic and Islamic Education does not have five for this purpose. That matters when a Year 11 student is deciding whether to drop a subject, because dropping the wrong one can leave the count short in a way that only becomes visible at application. At least one page currently ranking for UAE tutoring searches states that candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced rule is five, and getting this right is a reason to check a page's references rather than its design.

Two cautions apply to anything you read about this, including this page. Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process and nothing a tutoring platform performs, guarantees or expedites; verify the current requirement on the Ministry's own channels before acting on it. And no IB points threshold for equivalency has been published in the sources used here, so any specific IB figure quoted elsewhere should be checked against the Ministry directly rather than repeated.

What IGCSE science tuition costs in Dubai, and how to check the figure yourself

Every number in this section can be verified by you in about ten minutes, which is the point of publishing it this way. Three of the six strongest pages competing for Dubai tutoring searches publish no price at all, and two of the others quote in US dollars, a currency no Dubai family transacts in. The useful thing a parent can do is treat any rate quoted at them as a claim to be checked against a published source, and the sources exist.

The published Dubai bands, with who published them: budget online tutoring from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor online at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialist IGCSE, IB and A Level tutoring at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase quoting around AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate work giving the same band. Visiting one-to-one tuition at AED 180 to 500, which is Bestimate at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors advertising AED 200 to 500. Premium named tutors higher again, with BartyED publishing AED 650. These are other providers' published rates as of the October 2026 research and not IB Gram prices.

How to check one: open the provider's own pricing page, note the date it was last updated, and compare the visible figure against anything quoted to you verbally. The competitor audit behind this page found one brand contradicting its own prices on a single page and another whose structured pricing data disagreed with its visible text, so the exercise is not academic. Worth adding as context for a household budget: KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion.

Starting before Year 11 does, and what happens if nobody is free

The most useful enquiry names the board, the code, the tier if there is one, the subjects your child takes and the two evenings that are genuinely free. With those five things a specialist can tell you in a single reply whether the problem is content, technique or mathematics, and quote a plan against your actual week rather than a general one. Without the code, the first session is spent establishing which examination your child is sitting, which is a waste of an hour you paid for.

Then a free trial lesson, one per student and bookable with no card details, taught by the tutor who would take the course. For IGCSE science a good trial includes a real past-paper question and a practical-method question, because those two together reveal more in twenty minutes than any diagnostic conversation. If the match is wrong, ask for another; that costs nothing and it is a better outcome than three paid sessions of politeness.

The honest part concerns timing and availability. Year 11 demand peaks in the eight weeks before a series, which is precisely when the best slots are already taken, and the 6:30pm to 8:30pm weekday band is the most contested on the platform. When no suitable tutor is free in the window you need, you will be told, with a date, rather than matched to a generalist. The usual alternatives are a Friday morning or weekend slot, which for full-paper work is better anyway, or a UAE-timed session with a specialist based elsewhere, delivered in the same format at the same Gulf Standard Time hour. Starting in Year 10 rather than in the final term is how families avoid the problem altogether.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around The Lakes

For an IGCSE science plan the relevant question about each neighbouring community is which board its schools use and when its school day ends, because those two facts between them decide what is taught and when it can be taught.

The Springs

Townhouses next door, with a heavy British-curriculum flow into Dubai British School Emirates Hills. Most Year 10 and Year 11 science enquiries in Emirates Living come from this pocket and the Meadows edge, and most are about Physics or Chemistry rather than Biology.

The Meadows

Villas a two-minute drive away. Emirates International School Meadows runs the IB continuum, so children here may sit MYP assessments rather than IGCSE, which is worth checking before a tutor is briefed on an exam board.

The Greens

Apartments across Sheikh Zayed Road with Regent International School inside the community on the British route. Parents working in Barsha Heights or Media City are home earlier, so 6pm starts are more workable from this side than from the Marina.

The Views

Towers beside Emirates Golf Club. Smaller households on average, and bookings cluster late in the evening or at weekends. Year 11 students here often take sequential sessions in two sciences on one night.

Emirates Hills

Large villas to the north. Triple science is more common here than double award, which makes the weekly timetable tighter and pushes families towards Friday mornings for the longer revision work.

Al Barsha

Fifteen to twenty minutes east and home to several large schools. The afternoon return drive is the slowest part of a Lakes day, which in practice rules out any weekday session starting before 5pm for children at this cluster.

Al Sufouh

Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School sit here, both on the British route through IGCSE to A Level. Science conversations from Lakes families with children here tend to concern Extended tier and sixth-form entry rather than board choice.

Jumeirah Village Circle

A longer run inland where several Lakes families have relatives or share school transport. Worth mentioning because transport sharing often fixes a family's pickup time, and therefore their available tuition window, more rigidly than the school day does.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in The Lakes

Emirates Living and Emirates Hills

The schools closest to a Lakes address, and a mix of boards. Two run the IB continuum or Diploma, so their students may not sit IGCSE at all; the rest run the British route and will have a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel code for every science your child takes.

  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Regent International School
  • Emirates International School - Meadows
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Barsha Heights

The twenty-minute ring, and where a large share of Lakes secondary students actually sit their examinations. Several of these schools are established British-curriculum centres with long-standing science departments and their own preferred boards.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • GEMS Dubai American Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Repton School Al Barsha

Motor City, Sports City and Arabian Ranches

The inland belt, reached by a drive long enough that weekday science sessions before six are not realistic. Families here lean more heavily on Friday mornings and weekends for the two-hour revision blocks that Year 11 needs.

  • GEMS Metropole School Motor City
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Victory Heights Primary School

Schools are listed as neighbourhood context only. IB Gram claims no affiliation with, endorsement from or relationship to any school named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus code from the school

One email to the school's exams officer gives you the board, the code and the tier for each science your child takes. That single fact determines the papers, the practical arrangement and the series, and it is the difference between a first session that teaches and a first session that investigates.

  2. 02

Send the subjects and two free evenings

Tell us which sciences your child carries, the most recent assessment marks, and the two weekday windows that survive activities and the second school run. Availability is the binding constraint on matching a specialist, so a family that can name two real windows is far easier to place than one that says 'after school'.

  3. 03

A trial with a paper question in it

One free trial per student, no card details needed, taught by the tutor who would continue. Expect a real past-paper question and one practical-method question. Those two in twenty minutes show whether the gap is content, command terms or mathematics, which is what the plan should be built on.

  4. 04

Plan backwards from the entry deadline

The tutor takes the series, the entry deadline and the school's internal mock dates, then works back from them. Entries close months before the examinations, so the decisions about tier and papers sit much earlier in the year than most families expect and the revision plan has to respect that order.

  5. 05

Hold the slot and review at each report

The session is booked for the term so it survives a busy fortnight, with a short written note after each one. At every school reporting point the plan is checked against the mark and the frequency adjusted. Dropping from weekly to fortnightly once a subject is secure is a normal and welcome outcome.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught by syllabus code, not by subject name

Cambridge 0625 and Pearson Edexcel 4PH1 are both IGCSE Physics and they are not the same examination. Tutors are matched to the board, the code and the tier your child actually sits, which is a filter a distance-based search cannot apply and a general science tutor cannot satisfy.

Entry dates taken from the boards

The milestones on this page come from Cambridge's published key dates and Pearson's exam-timetable pages, with the series named. Every competitor page examined in the research behind this page named no session, no entry deadline and no results date at all, which is the information a Year 11 plan actually hangs on.

Rates published with a way to check them

Each AED band is attributed to the provider or survey that published it, with the October 2026 research date, and the table says how to verify it yourself. One brand in the audit contradicted its own prices on a single page, so checking is a reasonable habit rather than a cynical one.

Built around a Year 11 timetable

Slots run from 5pm to 8:30pm in Gulf Standard Time, plus the shortened Friday most Dubai schools keep and weekend mornings. Two sciences can run back-to-back on one evening with two specialists, because nothing has to travel between them and there is no gap to pay for.

The mathematics checked before the science

A student losing marks in all three sciences at once usually has one mathematics weakness rather than three science problems. That is checked first, because fixing rearrangement, units and gradients is faster and cheaper than three terms of subject tuition and it raises all three grades together.

Regulator and ministry rules cited, not borrowed

The equivalency rule, the KHDA role and the MoHRE tutoring permit are described here with their government sources, because they affect real decisions. IB Gram holds no KHDA, Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson accreditation and claims none; explaining a rule is not the same as being endorsed under it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in The Lakes: your questions answered

Should my child take three separate sciences or a double award at IGCSE?+

The useful test is mathematics rather than ambition. Three separate sciences produce three grades and the heaviest timetable; a double award, Cambridge 0654 or Pearson Edexcel 4SD0, covers all three disciplines at reduced depth and reports two grades. A student who rearranges formulae, handles standard form and reads gradients comfortably will manage triple science. A student who does not will lose the same marks in all three subjects at once, and two strong grades usually serve them better than three mediocre ones. A short Year 9 diagnostic settles it faster than a difficult first term.

What is the difference between Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences and three single sciences?+

Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is a double award: it covers biology, chemistry and physics content and reports two grades rather than three, with less content per discipline than the single syllabuses 0610, 0620 and 0625. The teaching load is lighter and most sixth-form science routes stay open where the grades are strong. Three single sciences carry more content, three sets of homework and three examinations, and they remove any need to discuss entry to A Level or Higher Level science at sixteen. Confirm with the school which route your child is actually on before briefing a tutor.

How are practical skills examined if my child studies science online?+

That depends on the board, and in both cases most of the marks go to reasoning rather than handling. Cambridge assesses practicals in a separate paper worth twenty per cent, taken as a practical test or as a written alternative to practical; the alternative is a written paper throughout, where marks go to identifying variables, processing data and suggesting specific improvements. Pearson Edexcel assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead. Any real laboratory work happens at school, where the board requires it, while the design and evaluation work is taught well on a shared screen.

Does the Cambridge Core tier limit the grade my child can achieve?+

Cambridge single sciences are tiered, and Core and Extended candidates sit different papers with different grade ranges available, with Extended the route to the top grades. That makes the tier decision consequential rather than administrative, and it is taken before the entry deadline, which falls months ahead of the examinations. Ask the school which tier your child is entered for and when that decision is finalised. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered and graded 9 to 1, so families on that board face no equivalent choice.

How do I find out which exam board my child's school in The Lakes uses?+

Email the school's exams officer and ask for the board, the syllabus code and the tier for each science your child takes. Schools within reach of The Lakes use both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, and some use different boards for different subjects, so the answer is not predictable from the school's name or reputation. The code matters more than the subject name because it determines the papers, the practical arrangement and the series. One email prevents a tutor preparing your child for a paper they will never sit.

When does the entry deadline fall relative to the IGCSE exams?+

Much earlier than most families expect, and the gap is the whole point. On the Cambridge June series the entry is made in the spring, months before the papers, with forecast grades a few weeks before the exam period and results in August; the November series closes earlier in the year and reports in January, which is why it works as a resit rather than a first attempt. Pearson runs May/June and November, and there the dates are published plainly: the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Entries go through the school, so ask your exams officer for the deadline that applies to your child's series and work your revision plan backwards from it.

Why does Cambridge publish more than one version of the same timetable?+

Because every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and the timetable differs by zone. Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. For a family in Dubai this means a timetable found through a search result is not good enough. Get the version your school's exams officer uses, check the dates for every paper your child sits, and build the revision calendar from that document rather than from a generic one.

How many IGCSE subjects does the UAE count for British-track equivalency?+

Five. Students on the British track must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with either one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade. At least one page currently ranking for UAE tutoring searches states six, which is wrong. Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process that no tutoring provider performs or expedites, so confirm the current requirement through the Ministry's own channels before making a subject decision on it.

If my child drops a science in Year 11, could that break the equivalency count?+

It can, and this is the trap families do not see coming. The British-track rule asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. So a candidate holding five passes of which two are Arabic and Islamic Education is already short before anything is dropped, and removing a science can leave the count below the requirement in a way that only surfaces at application. Count the qualifying subjects first, then verify the current rule through the Ministry of Education's own channels.

For a family in The Lakes, is Year 10 or Year 11 the better moment to start science tuition?+

Year 10, by a wide margin, and the reason is cost rather than virtue. Starting in Year 10 means the gaps are small, the course is short and a weekly session can keep pace with the school while clearing the backlog underneath. Starting in the final term of Year 11 means buying the same outcome under time pressure, usually at a higher session frequency, and competing for slots in the eight weeks when demand peaks. The best single moment is the term after the first substantial assessment, when the weak area is visible but still cheap to fix.

How do three sciences fit into a week in The Lakes?+

By spreading rather than stacking. Place one science in a reliable late weekday slot from about 6:30pm, where fixtures cannot reach it, and a second on a different evening rather than in the same week. Use the shortened Friday that many Dubai schools run for the longer work: full papers to time and practical technique. Keep weekend mornings for pre-series blocks. Because lessons are delivered over live video, two subjects can run back-to-back on one evening with different specialists, and a session can move by half an hour on the day of a late fixture.

What should I expect to pay for IGCSE science tuition in Dubai?+

Published Dubai figures run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget online generalists, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, and AED 200 to 450 and above for an IGCSE or IB specialist. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150; TutorChase quotes around AED 270; Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey gives the specialist band. Visiting tuition runs AED 180 to 500 because travel sits inside the hour. Those are other providers' published rates as of the October 2026 research rather than IB Gram prices, and each can be checked on the publisher's own page.

Can one tutor cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics at IGCSE?+

One tutor can cover all three at Core or lower-Extended level, and plenty do it well, because the content at that stage is broad rather than deep. At the top of Extended, or where a student is chasing the highest grades in a single subject, a specialist in that subject is usually the better use of the hour. The practical answer for a Lakes family is often a mixed arrangement: one tutor maintaining two sciences and a specialist for the one that is costing grades, booked as sequential slots on the same evening.

Can a student in Dubai sit IGCSE science as a private candidate?+

Private candidate entry is arranged through an examination centre rather than through a tutoring provider, and the centre decides which syllabuses and components it can offer. The practical component is the complication: a practical test needs laboratory facilities and supervision, which is why some centres accept entries only for the written alternative to practical. If this is your route, contact prospective centres early, confirm which papers they can host and which series they enter for, and check the entry deadline, because it falls months before the examination period.

One email to the exams officer, then book the hour

The highest-value ten minutes available to a Lakes parent right now is an email asking the school for the board, the syllabus code and the tier for each science your child takes, plus the entry deadline for their series. That single reply turns a vague worry into a plan: it tells you which papers are coming, whether there is a separate practical to prepare for, and how many weeks are genuinely left. Send those details through with the two evenings that are reliably free, and the trial lesson can be booked into the slot you actually intend to keep rather than whichever one happens to be available.
