IB Tutor near me in Muhaisnah

Typing "IB tutor near me" in Muhaisnah is a reasonable instinct and a poor filter. Proximity tells you who can reach your building; it tells you nothing about whether they can read a criterion descriptor or explain how 45 points are assembled. This page replaces distance with evidence: how to read a KHDA report, how the Diploma is actually scored, what each internal assessment is marked out of, and what an honest answer to "is anyone near me" looks like in eastern Dubai.

IB & IGCSE in Muhaisnah

Distance is the wrong filter, and here is the better one

There is a reason "near me" is the phrase people type. It feels like a proxy for everything else: somebody local is accountable, reachable, probably recommended by a neighbour. In a city laid out like Dubai, with IB provision clustered in particular districts and almost none of it in Muhaisnah itself, that proxy breaks. The tutors nearest to Muhaisnah 1 through 4 are overwhelmingly CBSE and British-curriculum generalists, because that is what the surrounding schools teach. A Diploma student needs something narrower.

So this page proposes a different filter, built from things you can actually check. Can the tutor tell you how the 45 points are constructed, without looking? Can they name the criteria for your child's internal assessment and what each is worth? Do they know the difference between Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, and which one your child's university target expects? Those questions take four minutes and they separate specialists from subject graduates far more reliably than a postcode does.

The second half of the filter is about the school, not the tutor. Dubai publishes more usable information about its private schools than almost any other education market in the world, and almost nobody reads it. KHDA inspects annually on a six-band scale and publishes subject-level findings. If you are deciding whether your child's difficulty is a teaching problem, a programme-fit problem or a workload problem, the inspection report for their school is a free and better starting point than any tutoring enquiry.

Then there is the honest answer to the literal question. Is there an IB tutor near Muhaisnah? For common subjects, yes, somebody will travel, and the market rate for in-home visits in Dubai runs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included. For a Higher Level specialist in a less-taught subject, probably not. IB Gram does not solve this by sending anyone to your door; home visiting is a service we run only in India. In the UAE we teach one-to-one over live video, which is how a Muhaisnah family reaches a specialist who would never have driven here.

What follows is the material that makes the better filter usable. The inspection bands and what each actually implies. The Higher and Standard Level decision, which drives more of a Diploma outcome than any individual grade. How the points are built, including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix that families consistently underestimate. The mark allocations for each internal assessment, by criterion letter. What distance really costs a Muhaisnah evening. And how the first and second years of the Diploma require two different kinds of help.

None of it assumes you will contact us. A parent who reads the inspection report for their child's school, works out where the recoverable points sit, and then asks the subject teacher one precise question has already done most of the useful work, often for nothing. Tutoring is worth buying when a specific capability is missing and the school cannot give it one-to-one attention. It is not worth buying as insurance, and a provider who tells you otherwise about a regulatory process or a university offer is selling urgency rather than teaching.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Before anything else, be certain which part of the IB continuum your child is in, because the assessment logic changes completely between them and so does the tutoring.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, examined externally at the end of two years, plus an internally assessed component in each subject worth roughly a fifth of the grade. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay feed a separate matrix worth up to three points. Subject grades run 1-7; the total runs to 45 with conditions attached to a pass.

Diploma enquiries from Muhaisnah almost always arrive with a specific arithmetic problem: a predicted total two or three points below a university offer, and a clear idea of which two subjects are responsible. That is the most tractable kind of request, because the work can be aimed precisely rather than spread.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked out of 8 and converted to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries. No external examination unless the school opts into eAssessment. The Personal Project in the final year is assessed against three criteria, each out of 8. Judgements rest on most recent and most consistent achievement rather than an average.

Middle Years enquiries from this catchment are usually about interpretation rather than content. A parent sees a 5 out of 8 on criterion C and cannot tell whether that is a problem. Teaching the student to write deliberately against a descriptor lifts marks without adding any new material, and it is the single highest-return intervention at this stage.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-based units rather than separate subjects, with the Exhibition in the final year. Reporting is descriptive and continuous, which is appropriate for the age and makes specific skill gaps hard to spot. Numeracy and written structure are where undiagnosed weaknesses tend to sit until criterion marking begins in the Middle Years Programme.

From Muhaisnah and the surrounding apartment communities, PYP requests concentrate on reading fluency and number confidence. Short frequent sessions work better than long ones at this age, and twenty-five minutes twice a week after a long bus journey beats ninety minutes once.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma courses Muhaisnah enquiries name most often, described by where the marks actually move rather than by syllabus summary.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Grades move on presentation discipline and on the exploration. Students who can do the mathematics still lose marks for unstated methods and unlabelled sketches, and HL proof questions reward structured argument over cleverness.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics with heavy technology use. The recurring loss is a correct calculator output with no interpretation attached, and HL adds matrices and graph theory that students meet nowhere else in the Diploma.

Physics

HL and SL

Definitions, graph meaning and uncertainty handling decide outcomes. A student can rearrange any equation and still fail to say what a gradient represents, which is the question the paper actually asks.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry the load. The reliable failure is recall without explanation, because the longer questions ask for a trend to be accounted for rather than stated.

Biology

HL and SL

Command-term precision above all. Outline, explain, distinguish and evaluate each demand a different shape of answer, and data-based questions on unfamiliar studies reward method literacy rather than memorised content.

Economics

HL and SL

Fully labelled diagrams, then evaluation that weighs and concludes. The portfolio of commentaries is where most avoidable marks go, usually because the article was chosen before the concept was understood.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application to the specific stimulus rather than generically, plus quantitative questions students assume are optional. The HL research project rewards a narrow question on a real organisation over an ambitious one.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis, the individual oral built on a global issue, and the HL essay marked out of 20 across four criteria. Writing about how a text works, rather than what it says, is the shift that moves bands.

Psychology

HL and SL

Named studies deployed with method and limitation, and essays built to a command term. The experimental study's design decides most of its marks before any data exists.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Systems, networks and abstract data structures on paper, plus a solution built for a real client. Documentation carries the criterion marks, so a working program with a thin write-up scores poorly.

History

HL and SL

Source evaluation on provenance rather than content, plus the historical investigation with its own criteria. HL adds a depth study examined in a third paper, which is where the reading load becomes real.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

Comparative study, process portfolio and exhibition, each assessed separately and each with its own word or page limits. Students lose marks on documentation and curatorial rationale rather than on making, which surprises most families.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Muhaisnah Diploma and Middle Years families use us, all delivered live one-to-one over video.

Single-subject weekly specialist

One course, one tutor who teaches that course habitually, a fixed weekly slot built around the school calendar. The work between sessions is set against the school's own assessment points, so the student is never preparing for two different schedules at once.

  • Specialist in the exact course and level
  • Fixed slot, same tutor, full term
  • Tasks aligned to the school's assessment calendar
  • Reviewed against marked work at session six

Points-targeted package

For a student two or three points short of an offer, work aimed at the specific subjects where the arithmetic says the points are recoverable. Sometimes that means a Higher Level grade; often it means an easier gain in a Standard Level subject or in the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix.

  • Starts from the predicted grades and the offer
  • Targets where points are cheapest to recover
  • Includes the matrix, which families underestimate
  • Honest when the arithmetic does not work

Criterion coaching for internal assessment

Sessions on an exploration, investigation, portfolio, historical investigation or Extended Essay, run as teaching and feedback against the published criteria. The tutor interrogates design and names the descriptor not yet met; the student writes every sentence that will be marked.

  • Criterion-by-criterion review of the student's own draft
  • Research question and method tested before data exists
  • Word and page limits checked against the component
  • No text supplied, drafted or completed by the tutor

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Muhaisnah

01

What a KHDA inspection report tells you that a tutor cannot

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described by the UAE government as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes the result on a six-band scale. Most parents know their school's overall band and stop there, which wastes the document. The value is in the subject-level and phase-level detail underneath, because that is where a report says something actionable about your child's actual situation.

Read it with a specific question. If your child is struggling in Diploma Physics and the report identifies science attainment in the post-16 phase as a relative weakness, you are looking at a different problem from a student struggling in a subject the report identifies as a strength. The first is partly a provision issue and tutoring is a genuine supplement. The second is more likely to be about that individual student's technique, which is cheaper and faster to fix.

The bands themselves are worth understanding in plain language, because the labels are easy to over-read. The table below gives each band and what it practically implies for a family weighing up extra support. It is not a ranking of schools; it is a translation of a regulator's vocabulary into the decision you are actually making.

One more use. Dubai's private school sector had 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 curricula in 2024-25, with UK provision at 37% of enrolment, Indian at 26%, US at 14% and International Baccalaureate at 7%. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three IB, were announced for the 2026-27 intake, creating 16,846 new places. If you are weighing a move, that supply picture matters as much as any inspection band.

02

Higher or Standard Level: the decision that drives everything else

Of all the choices a Diploma student makes, the Higher Level selection does the most damage when it is wrong, and it is the one families get least help with. Three subjects at Higher Level means three courses with more content, an extra paper in several subjects, and a higher expectation in the internal assessment. Choose three that align with the university route and the workload is justified. Choose one because a friend did, and it sits on the timetable for two years taking time from the subjects that matter.

The table sets out what actually differs between the levels across the things that change a grade. Read the final column carefully: the honest reason to take a subject at Higher Level is that a destination requires it or the student is genuinely strong in it, not that Higher Level looks better on a transcript. Universities read the subject requirement, not the count.

The commonest fixable error we see from eastern Dubai students is a Higher Level choice made without checking the university requirement in the destination country. For mathematics in particular, the route choice between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation has real consequences: engineering and many science programmes expect the former, often at Higher Level, while business, social science and some economics routes accept the latter. Changing route in the second year is usually not possible.

If your child is already committed and the level is wrong, the useful tutoring question is narrow: can this subject be stabilised at a grade that protects the total, while the points are recovered elsewhere? Often the answer is yes and it is cheaper than trying to force the Higher Level grade up. That calculation is what the points-targeted work on this page is for, and it starts from the predicted grades rather than from ambition.

03

How 45 points are actually built, and where the cheap points are

Families routinely plan a Diploma as six separate subjects and then discover the total does not work that way. Six subjects graded 1-7 give a maximum of 42. The remaining three points come from a matrix combining the Theory of Knowledge grade and the Extended Essay grade. A pass requires a minimum of 24 points with a set of additional conditions on individual grades and on the core components, so a student can reach 24 and still not be awarded the Diploma.

That structure has a practical consequence nobody tells parents in Muhaisnah: the matrix points are frequently the cheapest on the board. A student who treats the Extended Essay as an administrative hurdle and the Theory of Knowledge essay as unmarkable opinion is leaving points on the table that would cost many more hours to recover in a Higher Level science. The Extended Essay is marked out of 34 across five criteria and Critical thinking alone carries 12 of them, which is a specific, teachable thing.

The second place points hide is a Standard Level subject sitting at a 5 that could be a 6. The arithmetic is unsentimental: a point is a point, and a point recovered in a subject the student finds manageable costs a fraction of a point forced out of the Higher Level course they find hardest. Families resist this because the weak subject feels like the problem. The total does not care which subject the point came from.

This is why the first conversation we have with a Diploma family from this catchment is arithmetic rather than subject choice. Give us the predicted grades, the offer and the matrix position, and the answer to "which subject should we tutor" is usually visible in ten minutes, and is quite often not the subject the parent came in asking about.

04

Every internal assessment, by criterion letter and marks

This is the table the research behind these pages found nowhere in the market: internal assessment criteria named by letter with their mark allocations. It matters because students write to a word count and a deadline when they should be writing to a mark scheme. A student who knows that the Extended Essay's Critical thinking criterion carries 12 marks writes a different essay from one who does not, and the difference is not effort, it is aim.

Use it as a checklist with your child rather than as reading. Pick the component they are working on, find the criterion with the largest allocation, and ask them to show you where in their draft that criterion is served. If they cannot point at it, that is the session's work, and it is work a tutor can do properly in an hour without touching a sentence of their writing.

Two notes on accuracy. Criteria and allocations are revised when a subject guide is reissued, so confirm against the current guide for your child's subject and cohort, which the school's IB coordinator can supply. And weightings differ between Standard and Higher Level in several subjects even when the criteria names are identical, so check the level as well as the subject.

The boundary on all of this is firm and we state it on every page. A tutor may explain what a criterion asks for, question a research design, and tell a student which descriptor their draft does not yet meet. A tutor may not write, restructure or finish any part of the work that will be submitted. The sessions that help most end with the student holding three specific problems and the document unchanged.

What proximity actually buys a Muhaisnah household

Having argued that distance is the wrong filter, it is only fair to say precisely what it does buy, because for some families it is worth paying for. A tutor physically present supervises. For a child under about eleven, or for an older student with genuine attention difficulties, an adult in the room is a service and a screen is not a substitute. If that describes your household, in-home tutoring is the right purchase and the market band is roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included.

For a Diploma student, the calculation runs the other way, and the reason is arithmetic rather than preference. A tutor arriving at a Muhaisnah address at 6pm has crossed Al Ittihad Road or Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road at the worst hour, and arrival slippage of ten or fifteen minutes is normal. Across thirty weeks that is several complete lessons. An online session starts on time, and the written work can be marked in the shared document before the next slot rather than collected at the following visit.

The other thing distance buys is a smaller shortlist, which is the part families do not see until they are in it. The tutors who can reach Muhaisnah conveniently are the ones who already work this side of the city, and they are disproportionately generalists covering several curricula. For Visual Arts, Psychology, Computer Science or a first-language literature option at Higher Level, the local pool is close to empty, and we would rather say so than offer you whoever is free.

For completeness: IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE at all, in any emirate. It is an India-only service for us. Everything described on this page happens over live video, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time, with a free trial lesson before anything is charged.

06

DP1 and DP2 need different help, and families buy the wrong one

The first and second years of the Diploma are different jobs and most tutoring is sold as though they were the same. In the first year the risk is foundational: a student who does not consolidate the early units carries a gap into a two-year linear course with no mechanism for catching up. In the second year the risk is operational: too many deadlines colliding, internal assessments competing with mock examinations, and a student who knows the content losing marks to pace and presentation.

First-year work should therefore be content-led and unhurried, one subject, weekly, with the internal assessment's research question raised early rather than late. The single most useful thing a tutor does in the first year is force the exploration or investigation question to be interrogated before data exists, because an unworkable question discovered in the second year costs weeks that are not available.

Second-year work should be triage. Which components are still movable, which are already submitted, where does the arithmetic say points are recoverable, and what can realistically be done in the weeks remaining before study leave. A second-year family asking for weekly content coverage across three subjects usually needs something sharper and smaller, and saying so costs us revenue and saves them a term.

There is a third case worth naming: the student arriving into the Diploma from a Middle Years Programme or an IGCSE year, which in this catchment is common. The gap is not content, it is independence and assessment literacy. A student used to criterion marks or to IGCSE's structured question types meets a Diploma paper expecting sustained argument and extended reasoning, and the adjustment takes a term. Tutoring that recognises this spends the first sessions on how the assessment works, not on the next unit.

07

Which Diploma subjects this catchment is actually short of

Patterns in enquiries from eastern Dubai are consistent enough to be worth publishing, because they tell you where to expect difficulty finding help regardless of who you ask. Mathematics at both routes and both levels is well covered. Chemistry and Biology are well covered. Physics at Higher Level is noticeably thinner than at Standard Level, which matters because Higher Level Physics is also one of the most commonly required subjects for engineering routes.

Economics and Business Management at Higher Level are moderately covered, with the constraint being the internal assessment rather than the papers; plenty of tutors can teach the theory and fewer can tell a student why their chosen news article cannot support the key concept they have selected. English A at Higher Level is similar: teaching the texts is easy to find, teaching the HL essay against its four criteria is less so.

The genuinely thin areas are Psychology, Computer Science, Visual Arts, Film, Theatre and first-language literature in languages other than English. For these, expect a match to take one to two weeks and expect the specialist to be outside the UAE, teaching over the same platform at a Gulf Standard Time slot. We publish that rather than concealing it, because the alternative is a family discovering in week three that their Psychology tutor is a Biology teacher.

None of this changes with proximity. A search for a Visual Arts Diploma specialist within reach of Muhaisnah returns almost nothing, and that is not a failure of the search. It is a supply fact about a programme that serves roughly 7% of Dubai's private-school pupils and concentrates in particular districts. The only lever available is widening the geography, which is exactly what a live video lesson does.

08

Four minutes that separate a specialist from a subject graduate

Use this on any tutor, local or online, including ours. Four questions, none of which requires you to know the subject. First: how is my child's final grade in this subject made up, component by component, with the percentages? A specialist answers immediately and in numbers. Second: what is the internally assessed component called in this subject, and what are its criteria worth? The name changes by subject, and a tutor who says "the coursework" has answered a different question.

Third: what will you not do with my child's internal assessment? You want this answered firmly and without prompting, because the providers who will write it exist in this market and one of them publishes a price for completed work. Fourth: name one thing my child should be able to do after six sessions that they cannot do now. A specialist narrows this rather than widening it, and the narrowness is the signal.

If a tutor's answers are vague on the first two, they teach the subject rather than the qualification, which is adequate for the Middle Years Programme and inadequate for a second-year Diploma student eight weeks from study leave. If they hedge on the third, stop. If the fourth answer is "improve their grade", they are planning to improvise, and improvisation at AED 200 an hour is an expensive way to pass an evening.

Our free trial lesson exists to be used this way. We would rather a family interrogate the match in the first thirty minutes and reject it than discover the mismatch in March. A tutor who resents those four questions is telling you something useful at no cost.

Where we tutor

What distance actually costs around Muhaisnah

These are the communities a "near me" search sweeps in from Muhaisnah, described by travel reality rather than character.

Muhaisnah

Four sub-communities along Al Awir Road, served by road rather than rail. Any tutor travelling here in the late afternoon is crossing the same congestion the school buses are, which is why late-evening in-home availability is thin.

Al Qusais

Red Line stations make this the best-connected district adjacent to Muhaisnah, though the walk at each end of a metro journey is the part that defeats a 16-year-old carrying a bag in May.

Al Nahda

Straddles the Sharjah boundary and generates the afternoon congestion that defines this catchment's timetable. Journey times here swing by twenty-five minutes depending on the hour.

Mirdif

The closest district with IB continuum provision. Driving time from Muhaisnah is modest; the school-gate queues around the retail centre are what add the minutes.

Al Mizhar

Villa district beyond Mirdif with low tutoring supply of its own. Families here are usually choosing between a long drive and a screen, and the screen wins on delivered minutes.

Al Garhoud

Quick access west along Al Rebat Street, older schools, and the shortest practical run in this cluster. A 5.30pm session is genuinely achievable from here.

Dubai Festival City

Two of the nearest Diploma schools sit here, so many eastern Dubai DP enquiries originate from families schooling in this district rather than living in it.

Al Warqa

Substantial residential area with heavy Indian-curriculum provision. Students transferring from CBSE into the Middle Years Programme arrive with strong content and unfamiliar assessment habits.

Nad Al Hamar

Between Rashidiya and Mirdif with fast access to Festival City. Short runs make this one of the few parts of the cluster where an early-evening slot reliably holds.

International City

Dense and distant from IB provision. Weekend sessions outperform weekday ones here by a wide margin, simply because of the length of the daily journey.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Muhaisnah

Festival City and Garhoud

The nearest genuine Diploma provision to Muhaisnah, with one school running the full IB continuum. Reading the KHDA inspection report for any of these before enrolling tells you more than any league table.

  • Universal American School
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • The Sheffield Private School

Mirdif, Al Qusais and Nad Al Sheba

The wider ring of schools Muhaisnah families use, mixing IB continuum provision in Mirdif and Nad Al Sheba with British and Indian curricula closer in. Students we support in this catchment attend schools across the group.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Start from the arithmetic, not the subject

Send the predicted grades, the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay position and the university offer if there is one. For a Diploma student that tells us where points are actually recoverable, which is often not the subject the enquiry came in about.

  2. 02

Name the exact course and level

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is a different tutor from Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level. Send the course title as the school writes it, plus the year group and the most recent marked work.

  3. 03

We match a specialist and state the wait

If the course is well covered we offer a trial within a few days. If it is Psychology, Computer Science, Visual Arts or a first-language literature option, we tell you the match may take a fortnight and may be a specialist outside the UAE on the same platform.

  4. 04

Free trial, used as an interrogation

A full one-to-one lesson over live video with nothing charged. Ask the four questions from this page. A specialist will answer all four in under five minutes, and that is a better filter than any credential summary.

  5. 05

Agree one capability, review at session six

Something specific and checkable from the student's own marked work, such as writing an evaluation that reaches a judgement or propagating uncertainties unprompted. If it has not moved, we change the tutor or the diagnosis rather than adding hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion knowledge tested, not assumed

Tutors are asked to describe the assessment model for the course they are taking on, from memory, before the booking is confirmed. It is a low bar that a surprising number of generalists cannot clear, and it is the one that predicts whether a session is useful.

The points arithmetic comes first

Six subject grades reach 42 and the matrix supplies the last three. Starting from the total rather than from the weakest subject frequently identifies a cheaper point in a Standard Level course or in the Extended Essay, and saves a family a term of expensive effort.

Thin coverage published

Psychology, Computer Science, Visual Arts, Film, Theatre and several first-language literature options are genuinely hard to staff from the UAE. We name them and give a realistic wait rather than filling the slot with a tutor from an adjacent subject.

Delivered minutes, not atmosphere

An online session starts on time and the written work is marked in a shared document before the next slot. Arrival slippage on a 6pm in-home visit in eastern Dubai is normal, and across thirty weeks it costs several complete lessons.

Regulator information explained, never borrowed

We tell parents how to read a KHDA inspection report and what the six bands mean. IB Gram holds no approval, licence or partnership from KHDA, the IB or any board, and a provider claiming otherwise should be asked for the permit number.

Assessed work stays the student's

A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on the student's own draft. We will not produce an Extended Essay, exploration, investigation or Theory of Knowledge essay at any price, because the malpractice consequence falls on the child.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Muhaisnah: your questions answered

Is there an IB specialist living near Muhaisnah at all?+

For well-covered subjects, yes, somebody will travel to this part of Dubai, and the published market band for in-home visits is roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included. For a Higher Level specialist in Psychology, Computer Science, Visual Arts or a first-language literature option, realistically no. The schools around Muhaisnah teach mostly Indian and British curricula, so the local private-tutoring market reflects that rather than the Diploma. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses in any case; we match on the course and level and teach one-to-one over live video.

How are the 45 Diploma points actually put together?+

Six subjects each graded 1 to 7 give a maximum of 42. The final three come from a matrix combining the Theory of Knowledge grade with the Extended Essay grade. A Diploma requires a minimum of 24 points plus a set of further conditions on individual grades and the core components, so reaching 24 does not by itself guarantee the award. The practical consequence is that the matrix points are often the cheapest available, and a student treating the Extended Essay as paperwork is leaving points that would cost far more hours to recover in a Higher Level science.

What does my school's KHDA band actually tell me about my child?+

Less than the detail underneath it. KHDA inspects annually across six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak and publishes subject-level and phase-level findings, and those are the useful part. If your child is struggling in a subject the report identifies as a relative weakness in their phase, that is partly a provision question and extra support genuinely supplements. If they are struggling in a subject the report calls a strength, the issue is more likely their own technique, which is cheaper and quicker to address. Read the report with that specific question in mind.

My child picked three Higher Levels and is drowning. What now?+

Ask a narrower question than "how do we fix all three". Work out which Higher Level grade is genuinely recoverable, which needs only to be stabilised so it does not damage the total, and whether a Standard Level subject sitting at a 5 could reach a 6 more cheaply. A point is a point regardless of where it comes from, and the total does not care. Families resist this because the hardest subject feels like the problem, but the arithmetic usually says the available point is somewhere else, and it is a far shorter piece of work.

Which Diploma internal assessment criterion carries the most marks?+

It varies by component and it is worth knowing for your child's. The Extended Essay is marked out of 34 and criterion C, Critical thinking, carries 12 of those on its own. The Mathematics exploration is out of 20 with Use of mathematics worth 6. The science investigation is out of 24 across four criteria of 6 each. The Theory of Knowledge essay is judged out of 10 as a single global impression. Confirm against the current subject guide for your child's cohort, because allocations change when a guide is reissued.

Does it matter whether my child takes Maths AA or AI?+

Considerably, and the consequence is at university rather than at school. Analysis and Approaches is the algebra and calculus route, commonly required for engineering and many science programmes, often at Higher Level. Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route, accepted for business, social sciences and several economics programmes. Check the specific requirement of the destination before committing, because changing route in the second year is usually not possible. If the route is already wrong for the target, the conversation is about alternative entry paths rather than about tutoring.

How long does it take to match a tutor for a less common IB subject?+

One to two weeks for Psychology, Computer Science, Visual Arts, Film, Theatre and most first-language literature options other than English, and the specialist will usually be outside the UAE teaching over the same platform at a Gulf Standard Time slot. Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology are typically two to five days. Physics at Higher Level sits in between. We publish the wait rather than filling the slot, because the alternative is a family finding out in week three that their Psychology tutor teaches Biology.

Is a first-year Diploma student too early for tutoring?+

No, and the first year is where the money goes furthest. A linear two-year course has no built-in mechanism for catching up, so a gap left in the first term is carried to the final paper. The highest-value first-year work is forcing the internal assessment question to be interrogated before any data exists, because an unworkable exploration or investigation discovered in the second year costs weeks that are not available. Second-year support is triage by comparison, useful but working with much less room to manoeuvre.

My child moved into the Diploma from MYP and the grades fell. Is that normal?+

It is extremely common in this catchment and it is usually not a content problem. A student used to criterion-marked tasks meets a Diploma paper that wants sustained argument and extended reasoning, and the adjustment takes roughly a term. The same happens coming in from IGCSE, where question structures are more scaffolded. Useful tutoring spends the first few sessions on how the assessment works, with the subject content as the vehicle rather than the target, and parents who understand that stop reading the first report as a verdict.

Can a tutor look at my child's Extended Essay draft?+

Yes, and the correct version of that help is narrow. A tutor can read the draft against the five published criteria, say which descriptor is not yet met, question whether the research question is answerable in the word limit, and test the quality of the sources. A tutor cannot write, restructure or finish any part of it. The school allocates a supervisor who owns the formal process, and the most useful session before a supervisor meeting is often rehearsing the questions the student will be asked about their own progress.

Why would an online tutor be better than one who comes to our building?+

Two reasons, both measurable. First, who you can choose: restricting the list to tutors who can reach Muhaisnah at six in the evening removes most people who teach a particular Diploma course for a living and keeps the generalists. Second, delivered teaching minutes: a tutor crossing Al Ittihad Road at the afternoon peak arrives late more weeks than not, and across thirty weeks that is several complete lessons. The genuine exception is a younger child who needs an adult physically present to stay on task, where in-home work is the right purchase.

What should we be doing about Theory of Knowledge?+

Treating it as assessed work rather than as a discussion class. The essay is judged out of 10 against a single global assessment instrument, and together with the Extended Essay grade it feeds a matrix worth up to three Diploma points. Students who read it as unmarkable opinion write unmarkable essays. The teachable part is using a prescribed title as a genuine question, building an argument on specific knowledge claims with real examples, and handling the counter-position properly rather than mentioning it in a final sentence.

How do we judge whether the tutoring is working?+

Agree one specific capability in advance and check it at session six using the student's own marked work, not impressions. For a Diploma student that is usually a technique: propagating uncertainties without prompting, labelling a diagram fully under time pressure, or writing an evaluation paragraph that weighs and concludes. If it has not moved, the diagnosis or the match is wrong and should change. Waiting for the next school report is too slow, because the report lands after the term you were trying to rescue.

Are there cases where you tell a family not to book?+

Regularly. A second-year student eight weeks from the session with four subjects below target needs triage and a conversation with their IB coordinator, not four tutors. A student whose marked papers show the content is secure and the timing collapses needs a short technique block, not a year-long weekly slot. A student who is not sleeping needs neither. We would rather say that at the consultation and lose the booking than sell a package that was never going to work from a Muhaisnah address or anywhere else.

Replace distance with evidence

If you remember one thing from this page, make it the four questions. Ask any tutor how the grade is built, what the internal assessment criteria are worth, what they will refuse to do with it, and what your child will be able to do after six sessions. The answers take four minutes and they are a far better filter than a map. Send us the course and level as the school writes them, the predicted grades, the last marked paper and the two evening slots that survive your school run, and we will name a specialist and offer a free trial lesson. Nothing is charged before it, and we will tell you if the honest answer is that tutoring is not your best lever.
