IB Physics Tutor in Muhaisnah

Finding an IB physics tutor in Muhaisnah is harder than finding a maths tutor, and the reason is supply rather than search. Higher Level physics is thinly staffed across eastern Dubai, and a tutor who teaches physics generally is not the same as one who knows the current Diploma guide, its five themes, and what the scientific investigation is marked out of. This page shows you how to tell the difference. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Muhaisnah

Why physics is the hardest subject to staff in eastern Dubai

There is a pattern in enquiries from this catchment that is worth saying out loud. Mathematics, chemistry and biology reach a trial lesson within a few days. Physics at Standard Level is similar. Physics at Higher Level is noticeably thinner, and it takes four to seven days to match properly rather than two. That matters because Higher Level physics is also one of the most commonly required subjects for engineering admission, so the families who need it most are the ones facing the longest wait.

The scarcity is not about Dubai. Physics graduates who teach well are in short supply in most markets, and the ones who end up tutoring privately in a neighbourhood tend to be the ones whose subject spread is broad. Around Muhaisnah, where the school catchment is dominated by Indian and British curricula, a tutor advertising IB physics is frequently someone who teaches CBSE physics and will attempt the Diploma. The content overlaps; the assessment does not.

That assessment gap is the whole point of this page. The current Diploma physics guide organises content into five themes rather than the older numbered topics, examines across two papers with the first split into a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section, and carries a single scientific investigation worth a fifth of the grade and marked against four criteria of six marks each. A tutor working from the previous structure will teach competent physics and prepare your child for a paper that no longer exists in that form.

So the verification question for physics is blunt and specific: name the five themes, tell me the paper structure at my child's level with the weightings, and tell me what the investigation is marked out of and against which criteria. A Diploma physics specialist answers all three in under two minutes. Nobody else does, and no amount of enthusiasm substitutes.

On delivery, stated plainly rather than buried: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE. Home visiting is a service we run only in India, and the published Dubai market rate for in-home visits is roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included if that is the route you want. For a Muhaisnah family we match a Diploma physics specialist, who may be based outside the UAE, and teach one-to-one over live video at a Gulf Standard Time slot, with a free trial lesson before anything is charged. Widening the geography is the only lever that actually solves a supply problem.

One more thing before the detail. The largest share of lost marks in Diploma physics is not content. It is graph interpretation, uncertainty handling and definition precision, and all three are recoverable in weeks rather than terms. So the first useful conversation is about a marked script rather than about a syllabus plan, because a student who reports struggling with fields is often losing most of their marks somewhere else entirely, and buying more fields teaching would not have found that out.

At a glance

  • The current guide organises physics into five themes, not the older numbered topics
  • Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section
  • The scientific investigation is 20% of the grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria
  • Higher Level physics takes longer to match in this catchment than any other science
  • Uncertainties, graph interpretation and definitions decide more grades than algebra does
  • IB Gram teaches Muhaisnah students over live video; in-home visiting is India-only
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics requests from this catchment arrive from three stages, and the useful work differs completely between them.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma physics

Two years covering five themes, with additional higher-level content in each, examined across two written papers plus a scientific investigation worth 20%. Paper 1 contains a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section; Paper 2 is extended response. Higher Level sits longer papers covering the additional material rather than a separate third paper.

The majority of our physics enquiries from eastern Dubai are Higher Level students in the first year who have hit fields or the particulate nature of matter and want the foundations rebuilt. That is the right instinct and the right time, because second-year physics assumes the first year is secure.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years sciences

Integrated sciences assessed against four criteria, each marked out of 8. Criterion B asks students to inquire and design, criterion C to process and evaluate, which is where the investigative skills the Diploma later assesses begin. There is no terminal examination unless the school uses eAssessment.

Students in Mirdif and Festival City continuum schools arrive in Diploma physics having done criterion-marked investigations for years, which is an advantage they usually do not know they have. The gap is quantitative: by-hand algebra and uncertainty arithmetic, which the Middle Years Programme does not push.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE physics as the route in

Cambridge 0625 or Pearson 4PH1, tiered, with practical skills assessed either by a practical test or by an alternative-to-practical written paper. The content overlaps with the first Diploma theme substantially, but the mathematical demand and the expectation of explanation are both lower.

A student entering Diploma physics from a Core or Foundation IGCSE tier faces the steepest first term of any science in this catchment, because the algebra required is immediate. The honest fix is foundational work on rearrangement, proportionality and graph skills before the term starts.

ALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level physics, for comparison

The alternative route many eastern Dubai schools offer instead of the Diploma. More depth in fewer subjects, with practical skills assessed differently depending on the board. Universities state offers in either currency, and neither route is universally preferred.

Families occasionally ask us whether moving from Diploma physics to A Level physics would be easier. It is a different shape rather than an easier one, and switching mid-course loses the investigation work already done, so it is a conversation for the school's head of sixth form rather than for a tutor.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma physics breaks into identifiable areas and difficulty concentrates predictably. These are the ones Muhaisnah enquiries name.

Space, time and motion

SL and HL

Kinematics, forces, momentum, and at Higher Level rotational and relativistic extensions. The foundational theme, and the one where a student's by-hand algebra either holds or does not. Marks go on sign conventions and on free-body diagrams drawn incompletely.

The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Thermal physics, gas laws and the behaviour of particles. Students handle the equations and lose marks explaining why a quantity changes at constant volume, which is a conceptual answer rather than a calculation.

Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Oscillations, wave properties, superposition, and at Higher Level more demanding treatment of interference and simple harmonic motion. Phase relationships are where understanding most often turns out to be superficial.

Fields

SL and HL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields and their analogies, with induction and circuits. The theme that most commonly breaks first-year Higher Level students in this catchment, because the analogies between field types are load-bearing and rarely taught explicitly.

Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Radioactivity, nuclear binding, and quantum behaviour with Higher Level extensions. Content-heavy and often taught late in the second year, which means it is the theme students revise least and lose most on.

Uncertainties and error

Examinable throughout

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, and uncertainty bars on graphs. Examined on paper in the data-analysis section and assessed in the investigation. The most reliably recoverable marks in the whole course.

Graph interpretation

Examinable throughout

Gradient and area meaning, linearisation, and reading a relationship from a plot. The commonest single loss in physics: a student calculates a gradient correctly and cannot say what quantity it represents, which is the mark the question wanted.

Definitions and command terms

Examinable throughout

State, define, outline, explain, discuss and compare each demand a different answer. Physics definitions are precise and partially memorised; a near-miss definition loses the mark entirely, which students find unfair until it is explained.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL

A single piece of independent research worth 20% of the grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria. Research design decides most of the available marks before any data exists, which is why the topic conversation matters more than the write-up.

Experimental technique on paper

Data-analysis section

Reading instruments, choosing ranges, identifying systematic versus random error, and suggesting improvements. All assessed in writing, which means it is teachable on a shared screen rather than requiring a bench.

Mathematical fluency for physics

Underpins everything

Rearrangement, proportional reasoning, logarithms, trigonometry and small-angle approximations. A student weak here will appear to be weak at physics, and the diagnosis matters because the remedies are completely different.

Higher Level extension material

HL only

The additional content within each theme rather than a separate unit, examined in the same papers. Students who revise the shared content thoroughly and the extension material lightly are capped, and this is a planning error rather than a capability one.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Muhaisnah families run Diploma physics support, all over live video with a specialist matched to the level.

Weekly slot through the first year

The highest-value physics purchase in this catchment. A specialist for the level, one hour a week through the first year, aimed at the themes as they are taught plus uncertainty and graph technique alongside. Problems set and marked between sessions using the board's published material.

  • Specialist in Diploma physics at the student's level
  • Technique taught alongside content, not after it
  • Problems set and marked between sessions
  • Reviewed at session six on marked work

Investigation coaching block

Four to six sessions on the scientific investigation, beginning with whether the research question is answerable with a measurable independent variable and controllable conditions. Then the draft is read against the four criteria and the student is told which descriptor is not yet met. Nothing is written by the tutor.

  • Research design tested before any data is collected
  • Draft read against all four criteria with marks named
  • Uncertainty treatment and graphing checked rigorously
  • No text, data or analysis supplied by the tutor

Data-analysis and technique intensive

A bounded block on the data-analysis section of Paper 1, uncertainty propagation, linearisation and definition precision. Each session ends with a timed section marked against the published scheme. The most efficient physics block available, because these marks are recoverable regardless of content confidence.

  • Uncertainty propagation drilled to automaticity
  • Linearisation and gradient-meaning questions
  • Definitions rehearsed against command terms
  • Timed sections marked to the published scheme

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Muhaisnah

01

The five themes, and why the structure matters when choosing a tutor

The current Diploma physics guide organises content into five themes with additional higher-level material inside each, rather than the older arrangement of numbered core topics plus separate additional higher-level topics and an option. That reorganisation changes how a course is sequenced, how revision should be structured, and which paper a given piece of content appears in. A tutor who learned the previous structure and has not revisited it will teach correct physics in the wrong order for the wrong paper.

The themes are: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Each carries higher-level extension content examined in the same papers as the shared material rather than separately. That last detail is the one that catches students out, because revising the shared content thoroughly and the extension material lightly produces a capped grade with no warning.

The table sets out the themes with what each contains, where students in this catchment typically struggle, and the mathematical tool each demands. Read the last column carefully: physics difficulty in the first year is very often a mathematics problem wearing a physics costume, and the remedies are completely different. A student who cannot rearrange confidently will look weak at fields and will not be helped by more fields teaching.

Confirm the detail against the current subject guide for your child's cohort, which the school's IB coordinator can supply, because guides are reissued and content moves. What will not change is the verification instruction: ask a prospective physics tutor to name the themes without looking. It takes fifteen seconds and it filters more effectively than any qualification summary.

What your child actually sits: papers, durations and weightings

Ask any prospective tutor to recite this before you book. The current model examines physics across two written papers plus the internally assessed scientific investigation. Paper 1 is split: a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section, together carrying 36% of the grade. Paper 2 is extended response and carries 44%. The investigation carries the remaining 20%.

The difference between the levels is duration and content depth rather than an extra paper. At Standard Level the papers run an hour and a half each; at Higher Level Paper 1 runs two hours and Paper 2 two and a half, covering the extension material in the same components. There is no separate third paper in physics, which distinguishes it from Higher Level mathematics and is a point tutors from a mathematics background sometimes get wrong.

The planning consequence is that the data-analysis section deserves disproportionate attention. It sits inside Paper 1, it rewards uncertainty handling, graph interpretation and experimental reasoning, and those skills are independent of how confident a student feels about fields or quantum behaviour. A student weak on content can still score well there, which makes it the most reliable place to recover marks in the final term.

The second planning consequence concerns the investigation. Twenty per cent of the grade is submitted before any examination and is entirely within the student's control for the months it is in progress. Families who treat it as a report to be written at the end have already forfeited most of the research-design marks. Confirm weightings and durations against the current subject guide, because they are revised when a guide is reissued.

Where physics marks actually go, in order of size

  • A gradient is not an answer until its physical meaning is stated
  • Uncertainty propagation earns marks twice: on paper and in the investigation
  • Definitions are exact; a near-miss scores zero rather than partial credit
  • Match the answer to the command term, in length and in structure
  • Fields and the late-taught themes are where real content gaps cluster
  • Diagnose from a marked script before buying a block of hours

Marked scripts from this catchment show the same four losses repeatedly, and the largest is not content. It is graph interpretation: a student calculates a gradient correctly and then cannot state what physical quantity it represents, or reads an intercept without saying what it means. The question asked for meaning and received arithmetic. This is a comprehension and vocabulary issue as much as a physics one, and it responds to practice within weeks.

The second is uncertainty. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a multiplication or a power, and uncertainty bars drawn and used on a graph. It is examined in the data-analysis section and assessed again in the investigation, which means the same skill earns marks twice. Students treat it as an annoying appendix to real physics and lose a predictable number of marks every time.

The third is definition precision. Physics definitions are exact and partly memorised, and a near-miss loses the mark entirely. Students find that unfair until somebody explains that the definition is the content being assessed, not a preamble to it. Command terms compound this: state, define, outline, explain, discuss and compare each demand a different length and structure of answer, and a student writing an explanation where a definition was requested is doing more work for fewer marks.

The fourth is the one families most often assume is first: genuine content gaps. These are real, they cluster in fields and in the late-taught nuclear and quantum material, and they take longer to fix than the other three combined. Which is exactly why a diagnostic on marked work matters before buying hours. If three-quarters of the lost marks are graphs, uncertainty and definitions, a bounded technique block will move the grade faster than a term of content teaching.

04

The scientific investigation: 24 marks and a hard boundary

  • Four criteria, six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion, evaluation
  • The question and the variables decide most of the mark before data exists
  • Uncertainty treatment is assessed here as well as on paper
  • Allowed: criteria explained, design questioned, descriptors named on the student's draft
  • Not allowed: writing, restructuring, supplying data or doing the analysis

The investigation is 20% of the final grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Most of what decides the mark happens before the student collects a single reading, because research design and the quality of what can be analysed are determined by the question chosen and the variables identified. A good investigation with a poor question is not possible.

The failure pattern is consistent. A student picks a topic that interests them, discovers it has no cleanly measurable independent variable, collects data anyway, and produces an analysis with nothing to analyse. By the time a tutor sees the draft, the research-design marks are gone and so are most of the analysis marks. One session on question viability at the start is worth more than five sessions on the write-up at the end.

What a tutor may do here is firmly bounded and we state it on every page. Explain what each criterion asks for. Interrogate the research question, the independent and dependent variables, the control of conditions and the proposed range of readings. Read the student's own draft and say which descriptor is not yet met. Check that uncertainties have been handled and propagated properly. What a tutor may not do is write, restructure or complete any part of the submission, supply data, or perform the analysis.

The test is simple. After a useful session the student holds three specific problems to fix and the document contains nothing the tutor produced. Providers who will write an investigation exist in this market, and one of them publishes a price for completed internal assessments. Using such a service triggers IB malpractice procedures against the student, not the seller, which is why we say this plainly rather than in small print.

05

Practical work when the lesson is on a screen

This is the honest objection to online physics tutoring and it deserves a precise answer. Hands-on apparatus time is the school's job and the school has the equipment: the oscilloscopes, the light gates, the power supplies. No online tutor replaces that and we would not claim to. What the Diploma assesses in writing, however, is substantial, and most of it is better taught on a shared screen than at a bench.

Consider what the data-analysis section actually asks for. Reading a scale and recording to an appropriate precision. Choosing a sensible range and interval. Identifying whether an error is systematic or random. Tabulating with consistent significant figures and correct units in headers. Plotting with a sensible scale, drawing a line of best fit, extracting a gradient, interpreting it physically. Suggesting a specific improvement rather than a generic one. Every item on that list is a paper skill.

Several are taught considerably better remotely. Plotting is the clearest case: a tutor annotating the student's actual graph live, pointing at the scale choice that lost a mark, does more in five minutes than a comment written in an exercise book that goes home. Linearisation, where a student has to decide what to plot against what in order to get a straight line, is pure reasoning on a shared document.

What a Muhaisnah family needs to provide is modest and it matters. A way for the tutor to see written work as it is produced: a tablet with a stylus is ideal, a phone propped over a page works, and a shared spreadsheet is excellent for data handling. Where the school runs a practical examination rather than a written alternative, the focus shifts to recording conventions and to rehearsing method sequences so the student is not reading a procedure for the first time under pressure.

06

Two minutes that identify a Diploma physics specialist

Three requests, in this order, on any tutor including ours. First: name the five themes of the current physics guide. A specialist does this in fifteen seconds. Somebody working from the previous structure will describe numbered core topics and an option, which tells you immediately that their preparation material is out of date, and out-of-date material in physics means teaching towards a paper that no longer exists in that form.

Second: describe the papers at my child's level, with weightings. The expected answer names Paper 1 with its multiple-choice and data-analysis sections at 36%, Paper 2 at 44%, and the investigation at 20%, with the durations differing by level and no separate third paper. A tutor who mentions a third paper has confused physics with mathematics.

Third, and the strongest filter: what is the investigation marked out of, and against which criteria? The answer is 24 marks across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each. This is the question most generalists fail, because it is the part of the course furthest from subject content and closest to assessment literacy, and it is also the single component where a specialist adds the most value.

If you want a fourth, hand them your child's marked script and ask them to find three marks lost for a reason that is not about understanding physics. A specialist finds them in two minutes: an unstated gradient meaning, an uncertainty not propagated, a definition that was nearly right. That request cannot be prepared for, and the quality of the answer will be obvious to you even if you have never studied the subject.

07

Higher Level physics, university routes and what the market charges

Higher Level physics is required or strongly expected for engineering across most destinations and for several physical science programmes, which is why the demand for it in this catchment outstrips supply. It also pairs with Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches in those requirements, so a student aiming at engineering typically needs both at Higher Level and has correspondingly little slack in their week. Check the specific requirement on the university's own admissions page: requirements are stated by subject and level, and no tutoring page should be relied on for them.

For medicine the picture varies by country and institution, and chemistry and biology are more commonly the required pair, with physics useful rather than mandatory. We will not generalise further than that, because the requirement is institutional and a wrong generalisation on a page like this could shape a subject choice badly.

On what support costs: across the published Dubai figures, qualified subject tutors working online sit roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with one agency publishing IB from AED 200. Specialists across IB, IGCSE and A Level run roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with one UK agency publishing AED 270 and a premium examiner-branded provider publishing AED 650. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 with travel included. Higher Level physics tends to sit at the specialist end simply because fewer people can teach it.

Our own figure is agreed at the consultation once the level and cadence are known, and we sit in the qualified-specialist band rather than the budget one. The trial lesson is free and nothing is charged before it. Where the marked work says a bounded data-analysis and technique block will move the grade faster than a term of content teaching, we will quote the block, which is the smaller sale and usually the better purchase.

Starting physics support from Muhaisnah

Send the level, the most recent marked script and the school's weekly timetable. The marked script is the important one: it tells a physics specialist within two minutes whether the losses are graphs, uncertainty, definitions or genuine content, and those four need entirely different work. A description of the problem in words usually points at the wrong one, because students report content difficulty when the marks say technique.

Expect a slightly longer wait than for mathematics. Standard Level physics typically reaches a trial inside a week; Higher Level takes four to seven days and sometimes longer, and the specialist may be based outside the UAE teaching at a Gulf Standard Time slot. We will say that rather than offering you a chemistry teacher who is willing to try, because the difference will surface in the second year when fields and quantum behaviour arrive.

At the trial, run the three requests from the previous section. Then agree one narrow capability for session six: propagating a percentage uncertainty through a power without prompting, stating the physical meaning of a gradient every time, or giving the exact definition of a named quantity. All three are visible in a marked script, so the review is evidence rather than impression.

And if your child is in the first year, consider spending the first block on uncertainty, graphs and the investigation question rather than on the current theme. Those three transfer across the whole two years, they are the most reliably recoverable marks on the course, and they are entirely within the student's control. Families who start with the theme they are currently failing almost always come back for the other three later, having paid twice.

Where we tutor

Physics provision and the evening slot around Muhaisnah

These communities make up the catchment. Diploma physics is taught in only a few of their schools, which is the root of the supply problem.

Muhaisnah

No Diploma provision inside the neighbourhood, so every IB physics student here travels to school. Any tutor driving in for an evening session crosses the same congestion, which is why online matching solves more than it costs.

Al Qusais

School-dense but predominantly Indian and British curricula, so CBSE and IGCSE physics tutors are plentiful here and Diploma physics specialists are not. The distinction is invisible in a directory listing.

Mirdif

Continuum provision including Diploma sciences. Students schooling here arrive home between four and a quarter to five, so a half past six physics slot is the realistic earliest.

Dubai Festival City

Two of the nearest Diploma schools, one running the full continuum. A substantial share of our eastern Dubai physics enquiries originate from families schooling in this district.

Al Garhoud

Short run west and earlier arrivals, which makes half past five possible. Useful for physics specifically, because new conceptual content goes in better earlier in the evening.

Al Nahda

Longest afternoon journeys in the catchment. Physics sessions from here work at half past seven and are better suited to reviewing marked work than to first exposure to fields.

Al Warqa

Heavy Indian-curriculum provision and long school bus loops. Students transferring into Diploma physics from a CBSE background arrive with strong calculation habits and weaker explanation habits.

Al Mizhar

Villa district beyond Mirdif with no meaningful local physics supply. For a Higher Level student here the online route is not a compromise, it is the only route to a specialist.

Nad Al Hamar

Quick access to Festival City schools and short journeys, so an early-evening physics slot holds here more reliably than elsewhere in this cluster.

International City

Distant from Diploma provision. Saturday morning double sessions are the pattern that works, and they suit investigation and data-analysis work particularly well.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and a marked script

Standard or Higher Level, plus the most recent marked paper. A physics specialist reads the script and separates graph losses, uncertainty losses, definition losses and real content gaps inside two minutes, which is the distinction that decides what to buy.

  2. 02

Expect and accept a realistic wait

Higher Level physics takes four to seven days to match properly in this catchment and the specialist may be outside the UAE. We will tell you the wait rather than offering an adjacent-subject teacher, because the gap shows up when fields arrive.

  3. 03

Choose the hour from the timetable

Send the school's weekly schedule including late afternoons. New conceptual physics goes in better earlier in the evening, so half past five or six where the school run allows it, and half past seven for reviewing marked work.

  4. 04

Use the free trial as a test

Ask the tutor to name the five themes, describe the papers with weightings, and say what the investigation is marked out of and against which criteria. A specialist answers all three in two minutes, and nothing is charged for the lesson either way.

  5. 05

Start with technique, not the current theme

Uncertainty, graph meaning and the investigation question transfer across both years and are the most recoverable marks on the course. The theme the student is failing this month is usually not the right place to begin.

  6. 06

Review at session six on a script

One narrow capability, checkable in marked work: propagating uncertainty unprompted, stating gradient meaning every time, or producing an exact definition. Then continue, change the tutor, change the diagnosis or stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Current guide, not the previous one

Tutors are asked to name the five themes of the current physics guide before a booking is confirmed. Somebody describing numbered core topics and an option is working from superseded material, which in physics means preparing a student for a paper that no longer exists in that form.

Supply limits stated honestly

Higher Level physics is the thinnest science in this catchment and takes four to seven days to match, often with a specialist outside the UAE. We publish that rather than offering a chemistry teacher who is willing to attempt it.

Technique before content

Graph meaning, uncertainty propagation and definition precision usually account for most of the lost marks, and all three are recoverable in weeks. A diagnostic on a marked script comes before any plan, because students report content difficulty when the script says otherwise.

The investigation treated as 20% of the grade

Twenty-four marks across four criteria, with most of the outcome decided by the research question before data exists. We start with question viability, which is one session and the highest-return hour on the course.

Online where it is genuinely better

Plotting, linearisation, tabulation and uncertainty work are taught better on a shared screen than in an exercise book that goes home. Apparatus time belongs to the school, and we say so rather than implying otherwise.

No assessed work produced for the student

We will not write, restructure or complete any part of an investigation, supply data, or perform an analysis at any price. A provider in this market sells completed internal assessments; the malpractice consequence of using one falls on the child.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Muhaisnah: your questions answered

Why is it harder to find an IB physics tutor than a maths tutor here?+

Because the supply genuinely is thinner, particularly at Higher Level. Physics graduates who teach well are scarce in most markets, and around Muhaisnah the school catchment is dominated by Indian and British curricula, so the local tutoring supply is strong on CBSE and IGCSE physics and weak on the Diploma. Expect four to seven days to match Higher Level properly, sometimes longer, and expect the specialist to be based outside the UAE teaching at a Gulf Standard Time slot. We would rather state the wait than offer a chemistry teacher willing to attempt it.

What are the five themes in the current IB physics course?+

Space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Each carries additional higher-level content examined in the same papers rather than separately, which is the detail that catches students out: revising the shared content thoroughly and the extension material lightly produces a capped grade with no warning. Ask any prospective tutor to name the themes without looking. Somebody describing numbered core topics and an option is working from superseded material. Confirm the current structure against your child's subject guide.

How is IB physics examined at Higher Level?+

Across two written papers plus the scientific investigation, with no separate third paper, which distinguishes it from Higher Level mathematics. Paper 1 contains a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section and carries 36%. Paper 2 is extended response and carries 44%. The investigation carries 20%. At Higher Level Paper 1 runs two hours and Paper 2 two and a half, covering the extension content in the same components. Confirm durations and weightings against the current subject guide for your child's cohort, because they are revised when a guide is reissued.

My child can do the calculations but still loses marks. Why?+

Almost certainly graph meaning, uncertainty and definitions. The largest single loss in physics is calculating a gradient correctly and failing to state what physical quantity it represents, because the question asked for meaning and received arithmetic. The second is uncertainty: absolute, fractional and percentage, propagated through calculations and shown on graphs. The third is definition precision, where a near-miss scores nothing rather than partial credit. All three are visible on a marked script and all three respond within weeks, which is faster than any content work.

What is the physics investigation marked out of?+

Twenty-four marks across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and it carries 20% of the subject grade. Most of the outcome is decided before any readings are taken, because research design and the quality of what can be analysed depend on the question and the variables chosen. A good investigation built on a poor question is not possible, which is why one session on question viability at the start outperforms five sessions on the write-up at the end.

Can a tutor help with the physics investigation without crossing a line?+

Yes, and the boundary is specific. A tutor may explain what each of the four criteria asks for, interrogate the research question, the variables and the control of conditions, check that uncertainties have been propagated properly, and read the student's own draft to say which descriptor is not yet met. A tutor may not write, restructure or complete any part of it, supply data, or perform the analysis. After a useful session the student holds three problems to fix and the document contains nothing the tutor produced.

How are physics practicals covered if the lessons are online?+

Apparatus time belongs to the school, which has the equipment, and no online tutor replaces it. What the Diploma assesses in writing is substantial and much of it is taught better on a screen: recording to appropriate precision, choosing ranges, distinguishing systematic from random error, tabulating with consistent significant figures, plotting, linearising and extracting a gradient with its physical meaning. A tutor annotating your child's actual graph live does more in five minutes than a comment in an exercise book that goes home a week later.

Which physics theme causes the most trouble in the first year?+

Fields, consistently, in enquiries from this catchment. The analogies between gravitational, electric and magnetic fields are load-bearing and are rarely taught explicitly, so students learn three apparently unrelated sets of equations and lose the reasoning that connects them. Inverse-square relationships and algebraic confidence are both assumed. A secondary trouble spot is nuclear and quantum physics, not because it is harder but because it is usually taught late in the second year and therefore revised least and lost most.

Is my child's physics difficulty actually a maths problem?+

Frequently, and the distinction decides what to buy. Rearrangement, proportional reasoning, logarithms, trigonometry and small-angle approximations all underpin Diploma physics, and a student weak in those will look weak at physics while more physics teaching has little effect. A specialist can separate the two from a marked script in minutes: if the physics reasoning is sound and the algebra collapses, the remedy is mathematical fluency. Students entering from a Core or Foundation IGCSE tier face the sharpest version of this in their first term.

Do we need Higher Level physics for engineering?+

It is required or strongly expected for engineering across most destinations, usually alongside Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, which means a student aiming that way carries two demanding Higher Level subjects and little slack. Requirements are stated by subject and level on each university's own admissions page, and that is where to check rather than on any tutoring page including this one. For medicine the picture varies by country and institution and chemistry and biology are more commonly the required pair, with physics useful rather than mandatory.

What does Diploma physics support cost in eastern Dubai?+

Published Dubai figures put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with one agency publishing IB from AED 200, and specialists across IB, IGCSE and A Level at roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with one UK agency publishing AED 270 and a premium examiner-branded provider at AED 650. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 with travel included. Higher Level physics sits toward the specialist end because fewer people can teach it, not because the hour is different.

Should we start physics support in the first or second year?+

The first year, and the money goes much further there. Diploma physics is cumulative: second-year content assumes the first year is secure, and a gap left in fields in the first term is still costing marks in the final paper. The best first-year purchase is not more coverage of the current theme but uncertainty handling, graph interpretation and the investigation question, because all three transfer across both years and all three are the most recoverable marks on the course. Second-year work is triage by comparison.

Is there any point starting physics tutoring six weeks before the exams?+

Yes, but only for a specific kind of work. Six weeks is enough to drill the data-analysis section, uncertainty propagation, gradient-meaning questions and definition precision, which together account for a substantial share of lost marks and are independent of content confidence. Six weeks is not enough to rebuild fields or quantum physics from scratch, and a provider telling you otherwise is selling hope. Send the marked script and we will say which of the two situations your child is in before taking a booking.

Can the same tutor teach physics and maths for a Diploma student?+

It is the one pairing where a single specialist genuinely works, because both reward stated method, careful algebra and interpretation of graphs. It still requires somebody who teaches both courses habitually rather than one who will attempt the second. Test it directly: ask them to recite the assessment structure for each separately. A tutor who mentions a third paper in physics has confused it with Higher Level mathematics, which tells you the physics preparation is thin and will show when fields arrive.

Three questions, then a specialist

Name the five themes. Describe the papers with their weightings. Say what the investigation is marked out of and against which criteria. A Diploma physics specialist answers all three in about two minutes, and almost nobody else can, which makes those questions a better filter than any map of who lives near Muhaisnah. Send us the level, the most recent marked script and the school's weekly timetable, and we will match a specialist, tell you honestly how long it will take, and offer a free trial lesson at a slot the school run can survive. Nothing is charged before that lesson.
