IB Maths Tutor in Muhaisnah

An IB maths tutor in Muhaisnah has two problems to solve before any mathematics happens: which course your child is actually on, and which evening hour a tired sixteen-year-old can still think in. This page settles both. It separates Analysis and Approaches from Applications and Interpretation, sets out the papers and weightings at each level, and maps the school-run arithmetic that decides whether a session starts at six or half past seven. Lessons run live one-to-one over video.

IB & IGCSE in Muhaisnah

Two things to get right before the first lesson

The first is the course. IB mathematics is two separate subjects, each at two levels, and the four combinations are not interchangeable. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is the algebra, functions and calculus route, with a non-calculator paper. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation is the modelling and statistics route, calculator-permitted throughout. A tutor who teaches one well may be mediocre at the other, and the commonest wasted month in this catchment is a student getting excellent tuition in the wrong route.

Ask the school for the course title as written on the student's record, not the shorthand. "Maths HL" is not an answer. "Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL" is. If the student is in the first year and the school has not finalised the route, that conversation is more urgent than tutoring, because engineering and most science degrees expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, while business, social science and several economics routes accept Applications and Interpretation.

The second thing to get right is the hour, and in Muhaisnah that is a logistics problem rather than a preference. Almost no student living here attends school here. The British and IB provision sits in Al Qusais, Mirdif, Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City, which means a journey at both ends of the day. A school finishing at a quarter to three routinely puts a student through a Muhaisnah front door at a quarter past four, and the Al Nahda and Al Ittihad Road peak is what makes the difference.

Mathematics is the subject least tolerant of a badly chosen hour. A student can read a History source at nine in the evening and get something from it. A student attempting integration by substitution at nine in the evening after a long bus journey is generating errors to be unpicked next week. So the slot decision comes first: in this catchment that means six o'clock for most Year 11 and first-year Diploma students, half past seven for second-year students from January once school revision clinics have taken the earlier hours, and Saturday mornings for anyone whose weekdays are genuinely full.

Everything else on this page follows from those two decisions. The route comparison with university expectations attached. The paper structure and weightings at both levels of both routes, so you know what your child is actually sitting. The topics where marks go missing and why. The exploration, criterion by criterion, with its 20 marks and the firm boundary on what a tutor may do with it. The transition from a Middle Years Programme or IGCSE maths background into the Diploma, which is where most of this catchment's difficulty originates. And what the Dubai market charges, attributed to the providers who published the figures.

A note on what this page does not do. It does not promise a grade, and no tutor honestly can: the exploration is marked by the school and moderated, the papers are marked externally, and a student's performance on the day is theirs. What a specialist can change is the number of marks lost for reasons that have nothing to do with mathematical understanding, and in this subject that number is usually large enough to move a grade on its own.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics support in this catchment is requested at three points in the continuum, and the job is different at each because the assessment model changes completely.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma mathematics

Either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Standard or Higher Level, examined at the end of two years across two or three written papers, plus the exploration at 20%. Standard Level sits two papers of an hour and a half; Higher Level sits two longer papers plus a third worth 20% of the grade.

Almost every Muhaisnah Diploma maths enquiry names a specific breaking point rather than a general difficulty: calculus in the first year, or Paper 3 in the second. That specificity is useful, because it means a short targeted block often does more than a year-long slot.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years mathematics

Standard or extended mathematics assessed against four criteria, each marked out of 8 and converted to a 1-7 grade. Criterion C asks students to communicate mathematically and criterion D to apply mathematics in real-life contexts, which is why a student with fluent arithmetic can still sit mid-band.

Families arriving in Mirdif or Festival City schools from a CBSE or British background read a 5 out of 8 as a near-fail and panic. The fixable issue is almost always presentation and process description rather than mathematics, and it responds quickly to being taught deliberately.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE mathematics, as the route into the Diploma

Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, tiered, examined externally. The content overlaps substantially with the opening units of Diploma mathematics, and a student entering the Diploma from a Core or Foundation tier faces a genuinely steep first term, particularly in Analysis and Approaches.

This is the most common origin of Diploma maths difficulty in eastern Dubai. A student who was comfortable on the Extended tier adapts; a student who scraped through on Core and was placed in Analysis and Approaches is carrying an algebra gap into a calculus course, and the honest fix is foundational work before the term starts.

AI/AATaken in Year 11 or early DP1

The route decision itself

Not a programme but the decision that governs everything else. It is usually made by the school in consultation with the family, on the basis of prior attainment and intended destination, and it is extremely difficult to reverse once the second year begins because the content diverges rather than overlapping.

When a Muhaisnah family contacts us during the route decision rather than after it, the most valuable hour is spent on the university requirement for the intended destination rather than on mathematics. That conversation is free at the consultation and it has saved several families a wasted year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma mathematics breaks into identifiable topic areas, and difficulty concentrates in a few of them. These are the ones Muhaisnah enquiries name.

Number and algebra

AA and AI, both levels

Sequences, series, exponentials and logarithms, with binomial expansion and at Higher Level proof and complex numbers. Weak index and surd manipulation here propagates into every later topic, which is why a diagnostic always starts in this area.

Functions

AA and AI, both levels

Domain and range, transformations, composite and inverse functions. The commonest loss is sketching without intercepts, asymptotes or turning points labelled, which costs method marks even when the shape is right.

Geometry and trigonometry

AA and AI, both levels

Trigonometric identities and equations in Analysis and Approaches; three-dimensional geometry and vectors at Higher Level. Students lose marks giving a single solution where the interval demands several.

Statistics and probability

Heavier in AI

Distributions, correlation and regression, hypothesis testing in Applications and Interpretation. The recurring failure is a correct calculator output with no interpretation sentence attached, which is precisely what the mark scheme asks for.

Calculus

AA-weighted; present in AI

Differentiation and integration techniques, kinematics, and at Analysis and Approaches Higher Level substitution, parts and differential equations. This is where most first-year Diploma grades in this catchment fall, and where recovery takes longest.

Paper 3 problem solving

Higher Level only, both routes

Two extended investigative questions worth 20% of the grade, requiring sustained reasoning across a single scenario. Students meet nothing like it at IGCSE or in the Middle Years Programme, and it is almost entirely a technique to be practised rather than content to be learned.

The mathematical exploration

All four combinations

A piece of personal mathematics marked out of 20 across five criteria and worth 20% of the grade. More marks are lost here to a poorly chosen topic than to mathematical error, and the choice is made months before the writing.

Graphic display calculator technique

Essential in AI, significant in AA

Fluency with the permitted calculator is examinable in effect: students lose time and accuracy on tasks the device does instantly. Applications and Interpretation permits it on every paper, Analysis and Approaches does not on Paper 1.

Mathematical communication

All combinations

Notation, defined variables, stated methods and units. A correct answer with unstated working loses method marks in every paper, and this is the single most teachable gain available to a student in the first weeks of tutoring.

Modelling in context

AI-weighted

Choosing and justifying a model, fitting it, then criticising it. Applications and Interpretation students frequently fit without justifying and conclude without criticising, which removes the marks the question was designed around.

Proof

AA, Higher Level emphasis

Direct proof, contradiction, and proof by induction. Students who can follow a proof often cannot construct one, and the gap is structural rather than mathematical: knowing what a proof must establish and in what order.

Sequences for financial applications

AI emphasis

Compound interest, annuities, amortisation and depreciation. Straightforward content that is frequently under-practised because it appears easy, and then costs marks on precision of rounding and on reading the period correctly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Muhaisnah families run mathematics support, all over live video, chosen by what the school week allows.

Weekly slot, chosen against the timetable

One hour a week at a time selected after looking at the school's calendar, including which afternoons run late. Work set between sessions and marked before the next one, so the hour starts with a discussion of errors rather than a cold introduction. The format that survives a full term in this catchment.

  • Slot set from the school timetable, not assumed
  • Problems set and marked between sessions
  • Same tutor across the term for continuity
  • Reviewed at session six against marked work

Exploration coaching block

Four to six sessions on the mathematical exploration, run strictly as teaching and feedback on the student's own work. The topic is interrogated first, because more marks are lost to a weak choice than to mathematical error, then the draft is read against the five criteria and the student is told which descriptor is not yet met.

  • Topic viability tested before any writing
  • Draft read against all five criteria with marks named
  • Personal engagement and reflection made concrete
  • No mathematics or prose supplied by the tutor

Paper 3 and technique intensive

For Higher Level students in the second year, a bounded block on the third paper and on timed technique. Two sessions a week, each ending with a question done under exam conditions and marked to the published scheme. Paper 3 is 20% of the grade and is unlike anything the student has met before.

  • Extended investigative questions under timed conditions
  • Marked against the published scheme, not impressions
  • Notation and method-mark discipline drilled
  • Fixed start and end before study leave

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Muhaisnah

01

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: the decision that outlasts school

This is the most consequential choice in IB mathematics and it is frequently made on the wrong information. The two courses share a few topic headings and diverge sharply in emphasis. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and analytical, builds towards calculus, and includes a paper sat without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation is statistical and modelling-led, permits a calculator throughout, and asks students to justify and criticise models rather than to prove results.

Neither is easier. They are differently hard, and the student who thrives in one may genuinely struggle in the other. What is not symmetrical is the university consequence. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many pure science programmes expect Analysis and Approaches, commonly at Higher Level. Business, management, social sciences, psychology and a number of economics programmes accept Applications and Interpretation. Medicine varies by country and institution and must be checked individually rather than assumed.

The practical instruction for a Muhaisnah family is to check the actual entry requirement of the actual destination before the route is locked, and to check it on the university's own admissions page rather than on a forum. Requirements are stated by subject and level, and a page that says "IB mathematics" without specifying is not the page to rely on. If the intended destination is unclear, the lower-risk choice is usually the one that keeps more doors open, which for science-leaning students means Analysis and Approaches.

If the route is already wrong for the target, the conversation is about alternative entry paths, foundation years or a different destination, not about tutoring harder. We would say that at the consultation. The table sets out the comparison across the dimensions that matter, and the last column is the one to read if your child is currently in the first year and the decision is still live.

What your child is actually sitting: papers, durations and weightings

Ask a tutor to recite this from memory before you book them. A specialist will. The structure is consistent in shape across both routes and differs by level: Standard Level sits two written papers plus the exploration, Higher Level sits three written papers plus the exploration. The exploration is 20% of the grade in all four combinations, which surprises families who have treated it as a side project.

At Standard Level the two papers each carry 40% and run an hour and a half. The difference between the routes is the calculator: Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 is sat without one, while Applications and Interpretation permits one on both. At Higher Level the two main papers each carry 30% and run two hours, and the third paper carries 20% in an hour, consisting of two extended problem-solving questions.

That third paper deserves separate planning, because nothing in a student's prior experience resembles it. Two long investigative questions on a single scenario, requiring sustained reasoning and the confidence to continue when an early part has gone wrong. Students who have prepared only by topic revision meet it cold and lose a fifth of the grade in an hour. A bounded block of timed practice is the standard remedy and it works.

Weightings and durations are revised when a subject guide is reissued, so confirm the detail against the current guide for your child's cohort, which the school's IB coordinator can provide. What will not change is the planning implication: the exploration is a fifth of the grade and is entirely within the student's control months before any exam, which makes it the most reliably recoverable component on the whole course.

Where the marks actually go missing

  • Method marks: state the rule, define the variable, show the step
  • Sketches: intercepts, asymptotes and turning points labelled every time
  • Rounding: never carry an approximated intermediate value forward
  • Trigonometric equations: give every solution in the stated interval
  • Statistics: a number is not an answer until it has a sentence attached
  • Proof: know what must be established and in what order before starting

Most students losing marks in IB mathematics are not failing to understand the mathematics. They are losing method marks to presentation, losing accuracy marks to rounding, and losing interpretation marks by stopping at a number. All three are teachable in weeks rather than terms, which is why a diagnostic session on marked scripts is worth more than a month of topic coverage.

The presentation losses are the easiest to fix and the most consistently ignored. An unstated method, a derivative taken without naming the rule, a variable used but never defined, a sketch without intercepts or asymptotes labelled, a final answer given without units. Each costs one or two marks and they accumulate into a grade. A student who writes as though a marker needs convincing rather than as though the answer is obvious gains most of this back inside a term.

The accuracy losses cluster around rounding and premature approximation. Rounding an intermediate value and carrying it forward converts a correct method into a wrong answer, and a final answer given to the wrong degree of accuracy loses a mark that the mathematics had already earned. Applications and Interpretation students compound this with calculator-display habits, reading off more or fewer figures than the question requires.

The interpretation losses are the largest and the most route-specific. A regression line calculated and left unexplained, a correlation coefficient stated without comment on strength or validity, a model fitted without justification and concluded without criticism. These are the marks Applications and Interpretation is designed around, and a student who has learned the mechanics without the commentary is capped well below where their mathematics would place them. In Analysis and Approaches the analogous loss is in proof: following an argument is not constructing one, and the structural habits of a proof have to be taught explicitly.

04

Choosing the maths hour: what works from this catchment and what does not

Mathematics is the subject where the wrong hour does the most damage, because errors made while tired have to be unpicked rather than simply repeated. So the slot is not a scheduling detail, it is part of the teaching plan. The table below sets out the hours available to a Muhaisnah family, what each is realistically good for in mathematics specifically, and how often it survives a full term.

The headline is that six o'clock and half past seven carry nearly all our mathematics bookings from this catchment, and the half past four slot families instinctively request is the one most often abandoned by week five. A student arriving at a quarter past four from Al Qusais cannot be learning integration at half past, and the session becomes a conversation about homework instead, which is a different and much cheaper product.

Two local variables belong in the decision. Maghrib prayer timing moves through the year and sits awkwardly against a six o'clock slot in winter months. During Ramadan, school days shorten and Iftar reorganises the evening entirely; families who agree the Ramadan arrangement in advance keep continuity through the month, and those who do not generally lose it and restart in a worse position. Post-Iftar mathematics works well for some households and not at all for others, and it is worth asking the student rather than assuming.

The last column is the one to act on. A slot that holds for twenty-eight weeks beats a theoretically better slot that collapses nine times, because continuity is most of what weekly mathematics support delivers. If no weekday hour genuinely survives, take Saturday morning and stop fighting the timetable: a nine-thirty start on a Saturday is the most reliable mathematics hour available in this part of Dubai.

The exploration: 20 marks, five criteria, and a firm boundary

The mathematical exploration is worth 20% of the final grade, is marked out of 20 across five criteria, and is almost entirely within the student's control. It is therefore the single most reliably recoverable component on the course, and the one most often treated as an administrative task to be completed at the last possible moment. Families who understand the mark allocation early get the benefit; families who discover it in the final weeks do not.

More marks are lost to topic choice than to mathematical error. A topic that is too large cannot be explored properly in the space available; a topic that is too small leaves nothing to say; a topic the student has no genuine connection to makes the personal engagement criterion unreachable. Testing topic viability is the first job, it takes one session, and it is the highest-return hour available in the entire course.

The boundary on help is firm and we state it plainly. A tutor may explain what each criterion asks for, interrogate the topic and the mathematics, point out that a section does not yet meet a descriptor, and model the technique on an unrelated example. A tutor may not write, restructure or complete any part of the exploration. After a good session the student holds three specific problems to fix and the document contains no sentence or line of mathematics the tutor supplied.

The table gives the criteria with marks and the loss we see most often against each. Use it as a checklist with your child: pick the criterion with the largest allocation, ask them to show you where their draft serves it, and if they cannot point at it, that is the next session's work. Confirm the exact descriptors against the current subject guide, which the school's IB coordinator can supply.

From MYP or IGCSE into Diploma mathematics: the real gap

  • From Core or Foundation tier into Analysis and Approaches: algebra first, always
  • From Extended or Higher tier: the gap is adaptation, not content
  • From the Middle Years Programme: by-hand fluency and timed performance
  • In every case: diagnose from marked work before buying a block of hours
  • Fix the foundation even when it feels like going backwards

Most Diploma mathematics difficulty in this catchment starts before the Diploma. A student arrives from the Middle Years Programme or from IGCSE with a grade that looked acceptable and a set of habits that are not sufficient, and the first-year course does not pause to rebuild them. The gap is specific and it is diagnosable in a single session on marked work.

Coming from IGCSE, the gap is usually algebraic fluency and the expectation of independent practice. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 reward accurate execution of recognisable question types; Diploma papers reward adaptation to an unfamiliar framing. A student entering Analysis and Approaches from the Core or Foundation tier faces the steepest version of this, and the honest fix is foundational algebra before term starts rather than remedial calculus in November.

Coming from the Middle Years Programme, the gap is different. Criterion-marked tasks reward process description and real-world application, and often permit a calculator and multiple attempts. The Diploma asks for speed, by-hand fluency in Analysis and Approaches, and performance under examination conditions. Students who were strong on criteria C and D can be genuinely unprepared for Paper 1 without anybody having noticed.

The practical sequence we recommend for a Muhaisnah family in this position is unglamorous. Get the most recent marked work, spend one session diagnosing which of the three gaps is present, fix the foundational one first even if it feels like going backwards, and only then move to the current unit. Families who insist on starting with the unit the student is failing now generally spend twice as long, because the failure was never about that unit.

What Diploma mathematics support costs in eastern Dubai

Mathematics is the most tutored subject in this market, which keeps supply reasonable and rates mid-band rather than scarce. Across the published Dubai figures, qualified subject tutors working online sit roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with one agency publishing IB from AED 200. IB and A Level specialists run roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with one UK agency publishing AED 270 and a premium examiner-branded provider publishing AED 650. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 with travel included.

Per grade moved, mathematics is often the better value in a Diploma student's basket, because the losses are specific. A student dropping method marks and rounding accuracy can be visibly better in six weeks, which is not true of a student who needs to rebuild two years of reading in a literature subject. That makes a bounded block a sensible purchase here, and it is how we would advise most families in this catchment to start.

The expensive pattern is the opposite: an open-ended weekly slot bought in panic in the second year, with no stated target, renewed monthly out of uncertainty. Published monthly estimates for specialist exam-year support run roughly AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for a weekly hour, so an unevaluated engagement across a year is a substantial sum for something nobody is measuring.

On our own figure: it is agreed at the consultation once the route, level and cadence are known, because a weekly Standard Level slot and a Paper 3 intensive are not the same product. We sit in the qualified-specialist part of the bands above, not the budget part. The trial lesson is free, nothing is charged before it, and if the marked work suggests a short block rather than a year-long slot we will say so even though it is the smaller sale.

Starting mathematics support from Muhaisnah

Send three things. The full course title and level as the school writes it, so we match the route correctly. The most recent marked paper, which tells a mathematics specialist in two minutes whether the problem is method marks, accuracy, interpretation or genuine content gaps. And the school's weekly timetable, including the late afternoons, so the slot is chosen rather than guessed.

We then propose a specialist in that route at that level and a free trial lesson in a slot the school run can survive. Ask the tutor to recite the papers, durations and weightings for your child's exact combination. A specialist does it from memory in under a minute. Ask also what they will refuse to do with the exploration, and expect a firm answer without prompting.

After the trial we agree one capability to be true by session six, expressed in a way you can check from a marked script. For mathematics that is usually mechanical: stating methods without being reminded, labelling sketches completely, carrying unrounded intermediate values, or attaching an interpretation sentence to every statistical result. At session six you look at the work, not at a conversation.

One last suggestion specific to this catchment. If your child is in the first year of the Diploma, spend the first block on the exploration topic and on method-mark discipline rather than on the current unit. Both are cheap, both are entirely within the student's control, and both pay back across the whole two years. Almost every family who starts the other way round asks us in the second year why nobody mentioned the exploration earlier.

Where we tutor

School end times and the maths slot, community by community

Where the student goes to school decides when mathematics can usefully be taught. These are the communities involved and what each does to the clock.

Muhaisnah

Four sub-communities on Al Awir Road with no local IB or British secondary provision, so the maths slot is always set by a journey rather than by a walk home.

Al Qusais

The commonest school destination from Muhaisnah and the one most affected by the Al Nahda bottleneck. Students from here are usually home between four and half past, so six o'clock is the realistic earliest maths slot.

Mirdif

Short drive, slow gates. Pick-up queues around the retail centre run until about four, which pushes the first workable session to half past six for most families.

Al Garhoud

The shortest run in this cluster, west along Al Rebat Street. Students schooling here get home early enough that half past five genuinely works, which matters for calculus.

Dubai Festival City

Staggered pick-ups by year group mean an older sibling can arrive an hour after a younger one. Plan the maths slot around the later arrival, not the earlier.

Al Warqa

Long multi-community bus loops serve the schools here, so the last student dropped can be forty minutes behind the first. Ask the school which end of the route your child sits on.

Al Nahda

The single biggest variable in this catchment's afternoon. Families living on this boundary should plan half past seven rather than anything earlier, and should not expect a six o'clock session to survive the term.

Al Mizhar

Beyond Mirdif with long bus routes. Distance is modest but the timetable, not the map, decides the slot, and the bus timetable is obtainable from the school.

Nad Al Hamar

Quick access to Festival City and Rashidiya schools. One of the few parts of this cluster where a half past five mathematics session reliably holds.

International City

Long journeys in both directions. Saturday morning maths sessions outperform weekday ones here by a wide margin, and families who accept that early keep continuity.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the route and level in writing

Get the full course title from the school, not the student: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard. Matching a tutor to the wrong route is the commonest wasted month in this catchment and it is entirely preventable with one email.

  2. 02

Send a marked script, not a description

The most recent marked paper tells a mathematics specialist whether the losses are method, accuracy, interpretation or content. Those four need different work, and a paragraph describing the problem usually points at the wrong one.

  3. 03

Choose the hour from the timetable

Send the school's weekly schedule including which afternoons finish late. In this catchment six o'clock and half past seven hold; half past four does not. The slot is part of the teaching plan rather than an administrative detail.

  4. 04

Free trial with the route specialist

A full one-to-one lesson over live video with nothing charged. Ask the tutor to recite the papers, durations and weightings for your child's exact combination, and ask what they will not do with the exploration.

  5. 05

Name one mechanical target for session six

Stating methods unprompted, labelling sketches completely, keeping intermediate values unrounded, or attaching interpretation to every statistical answer. Each is visible in a marked script, so the review is evidence rather than opinion.

  6. 06

Do the exploration early, not last

One session on topic viability in the first year is the highest-return hour on the course, because the exploration is a fifth of the grade and entirely within the student's control. Leaving it until the second year removes most of the available marks.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Route matched before anything else

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are different subjects with different papers and different calculator rules. We match on the full course title from the school, because excellent tuition in the wrong route is still a wasted term.

Assessment structure recited, not assumed

A tutor is asked to name the papers, durations and weightings for your child's exact combination before the booking is confirmed. It takes a minute and it reliably separates mathematics specialists from competent graduates.

The slot is part of the plan

Mathematics is the subject least tolerant of a tired student, because errors made at nine in the evening have to be unpicked rather than repeated. We set the hour from the school timetable, and we say when a requested slot will not survive the term.

Exploration treated as 20% of the grade

It is worth a fifth of the subject grade, marked out of 20 across five criteria, and almost entirely within the student's control. We start with topic viability because more marks are lost there than to any mathematical error later.

Method marks before new content

Most students losing marks understand the mathematics and are losing method, accuracy and interpretation marks. Those are fixable in weeks, which is why a diagnostic on marked scripts comes before any topic plan.

No written mathematics supplied for assessment

A tutor explains criteria, questions topics, and names the descriptor a draft does not meet. We will not write, restructure or complete any part of an exploration, because the malpractice consequence lands on the student rather than on us.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Muhaisnah: your questions answered

How do I find out whether my child is on Maths AA or AI?+

Ask the school for the full course title as it appears on the student's record, and ask the mathematics teacher rather than the student. "Maths HL" is not an answer; "Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL" is. It matters because the two courses differ in emphasis, in calculator rules and in what universities accept. Analysis and Approaches sits Paper 1 without a calculator and builds towards calculus and proof; Applications and Interpretation permits a calculator throughout and is statistical and modelling-led. A tutor who is strong in one is not automatically useful in the other.

Which IB maths course do UAE and overseas universities want?+

It depends on the programme, which is why it has to be checked on the university's own admissions page rather than assumed. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many pure science degrees commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. Business, management, social sciences and several economics programmes accept Applications and Interpretation. Medicine varies by country and institution. If the destination is still open, the route that keeps more doors available is usually Analysis and Approaches for science-leaning students. Changing route after the first year is generally not possible, so the check belongs before the decision.

What are the papers and weightings for IB maths at each level?+

Standard Level sits two papers, each an hour and a half and each worth 40%, plus the exploration at 20%. Higher Level sits three: two papers of two hours at 30% each, a third paper of an hour at 20% consisting of two extended problem-solving questions, plus the same exploration at 20%. Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 is sat without a calculator; Applications and Interpretation permits one throughout. Confirm the current detail against your child's subject guide, which the school's IB coordinator can supply, because structures are revised when a guide is reissued.

What exactly is Paper 3 and why does everyone worry about it?+

Paper 3 is sat only at Higher Level, runs an hour, carries 20% of the grade, and consists of two extended investigative questions built on a single scenario each. Nothing a student has met at IGCSE or in the Middle Years Programme resembles it: it rewards sustained reasoning and the nerve to keep going after an early part has gone wrong, rather than recognition of a familiar question type. Students who prepare only by revising topics meet it cold and lose a fifth of the grade in sixty minutes. Timed practice against the published scheme is the standard remedy.

My child understands the maths but keeps losing marks. What is happening?+

Almost certainly method, accuracy and interpretation losses rather than content. Method marks go missing when a rule is used without being named, a variable is used without being defined, or a sketch lacks intercepts and asymptotes. Accuracy marks go when an intermediate value is rounded and carried forward. Interpretation marks go when a calculated figure is left without a sentence explaining it, which is specifically what Applications and Interpretation questions are designed around. All three are visible in a marked script and all three are fixable within a term.

When should the exploration be started?+

Earlier than almost anyone does. It carries 20% of the subject grade and is marked out of 20 across five criteria, and more marks are lost to a poorly chosen topic than to any mathematical error in the writing. One session spent testing whether a topic is viable, genuinely connected to the student, and of appropriate mathematical level is the highest-return hour on the whole course. Families who reach it in the second year find most of the available marks already out of reach, because personal engagement and reflection cannot be retro-fitted to a topic chosen for convenience.

Can a tutor check the exploration before submission?+

A tutor can read the student's own draft against the five criteria and say precisely which descriptor is not yet met, question whether the mathematics is at the level of the course, and test the reflection for genuine critical discussion rather than a closing paragraph. A tutor cannot write, restructure or complete any part of it. After a session the student should hold three specific problems and the document should contain nothing the tutor supplied. Providers who will write an exploration exist; using one puts the student in front of an IB malpractice panel.

What time should a maths session start if my child schools in Mirdif?+

Half past six is the realistic earliest. School gates around Mirdif stay congested until roughly four, and a student arriving in Muhaisnah at a quarter past four needs to eat and change before learning anything. For new content, six o'clock or half past six works; for timed practice, half past seven is better because it mimics nothing about exam conditions but leaves the student alert. Mathematics is the subject least tolerant of a tired student, because errors made while exhausted have to be unpicked rather than simply repeated next week.

Is online maths tutoring workable without a shared whiteboard?+

It needs a way for the tutor to see the student's written work as it is produced, which is not negotiable for mathematics. A tablet with a stylus is ideal. A phone propped so the page is visible works. A shared document is fine for statistics and modelling but poor for by-hand algebra. What does not work is a student describing their working aloud while the tutor guesses, and families who solve this in the first week get noticeably more from every subsequent session.

My child came into the Diploma from IGCSE Core and is struggling. Where do we start?+

With algebra, even though it feels like going backwards. A student who was comfortable on the Extended or Higher tier adapts to Diploma mathematics within a term; a student who passed on Core or Foundation and was placed in Analysis and Approaches is carrying an index, surd and manipulation gap into a calculus course that will not pause. Diagnosing that from marked work takes one session. Fixing the foundation first is faster overall than attacking the unit they are currently failing, because the failure was never really about that unit.

How much does an IB maths tutor cost in this part of Dubai?+

Published Dubai figures put qualified subject tutors working online at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with one agency publishing IB from AED 200. IB and A Level specialists run roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with one UK agency publishing AED 270 and a premium examiner-branded provider publishing AED 650. In-home visits are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 with travel included. Those belong to the providers named, collected in October 2026. Mathematics is well supplied in this market, which keeps rates mid-band rather than scarce.

Does my child need a tutor for both years of the Diploma?+

Usually not, and buying two years of weekly support without evaluation is the expensive pattern in this market. A better shape is a bounded first-year block on method-mark discipline and the exploration topic, then nothing, then a second-year block on timed technique and Paper 3 if the marked work says it is needed. Published monthly estimates for specialist exam-year support run roughly AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for a weekly hour, so an unevaluated two-year engagement is a large sum nobody is measuring.

Can one tutor cover maths and physics for a Diploma student?+

This is the one pairing where a single specialist genuinely works, because the technique overlap is real: both reward stated method, careful algebra and interpretation of graphs. It still requires a tutor who teaches both courses habitually rather than one who is willing to attempt the second. Ask them to recite the assessment structure for each, separately. If the answer is confident for mathematics and vague for physics, book the mathematics and find a physics specialist, because the vagueness will show up in the second year.

Will sessions still run during Ramadan and school holidays?+

Yes, with the timing agreed in advance rather than improvised. School days shorten in Ramadan and Iftar reorganises the evening, so a six o'clock mathematics slot that worked in November sits awkwardly. Post-Iftar sessions suit some households and late-morning sessions on non-school days suit others, and it is worth asking the student which they would actually attend. Holidays are often the best time for foundational work, because there is no competing homework and a student can rebuild algebra without also keeping up with the current unit.

The right course, then the right hour

If you do only two things after reading this page, confirm which of the four mathematics combinations your child is actually on, and pick a session time the school run cannot defeat. Those two decisions determine more than any choice of tutor. Send us the full course title from the school, the most recent marked paper and the school's weekly timetable, and we will come back with a route specialist and a free trial lesson in an hour that holds. Nothing is charged before the trial, and if the marked work says a short block would serve your child better than a weekly slot, we will tell you that instead.
