IB MYP Tutor in LA Mer

An IB MYP tutor in LA Mer faces a question no exam subject raises: what does tutoring mean when there are no terminal papers to practise? Middle Years students along the Jumeirah 1 shoreline are marked against four criteria per subject, each out of eight, on tasks set by their own teachers. This page explains how those marks are built, what a tutor can usefully change, and where the session fits between a 3:30pm school finish and bedtime. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Criteria A to D taught explicitly, with the 0-8 bands explained
  • Sessions planned around Jumeirah activity timetables
  • Personal Project supported as process coaching, not writing

IB & IGCSE in LA Mer

What MYP tutoring is for, when there is no exam to revise for

Parents in LA Mer who have been through IGCSE with an older child arrive at MYP tutoring expecting the same conversation and find a different one. There is no past paper to work through. There is no mark scheme published by an awarding body. The grade on the report was produced by the class teacher, marking a task they designed, against four published criteria each scored from zero to eight. The question a tutor has to answer is therefore not how do we practise for the exam, but what is this student actually being judged on.

The answer is more specific than most families are told. Every MYP subject has four criteria, labelled A to D, and they are different in each subject group. In mathematics they are knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In the sciences they are knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In language and literature they are analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. A student who is strong on content and weak on criterion B in mathematics has a pattern-finding and justification problem, not a maths problem, and no amount of extra practice questions will move the mark.

That makes diagnosis the first and most valuable thing a tutor does. The raw material is the student's own returned tasks with the criterion marks on them, which is information most families have in a folder and have never read as a dataset. Three reports in, the pattern is usually unmistakeable: consistently high on A, consistently low on C, which in almost every subject group means the thinking is sound and the communication of it is not. That is a teachable, bounded problem.

Timing in LA Mer follows the same arithmetic as every other subject in this cluster. Schools serving the Jumeirah 1 shoreline finish between about 2:45pm and 3:30pm, the drive home down Jumeirah Beach Road takes the next half hour, and activity programmes run to roughly 6pm. MYP students are younger than Diploma students and tire earlier, so the useful window is narrower: a session after 8pm with a twelve-year-old is not a session. One well-placed hour, either at 4:45pm where the activity calendar allows or at 6:30pm where it does not, is the arrangement that works.

IB Gram teaches LA Mer families one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, since home visits are offered only in India. For MYP that has a particular advantage: the criterion descriptors and the student's own marked task can be on screen side by side, which is how a student comes to understand what a six looks like compared with a four.

At a glance

  • Four criteria per subject, each marked from zero to eight
  • The criteria differ by subject group, so the diagnosis differs too
  • Returned marked tasks are the dataset a tutor should start from
  • Younger students need an earlier slot than Diploma students
  • Criterion descriptors and marked work can sit side by side on screen
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

LA Mer sits close to several schools running the IB continuum, where MYP is the five years before the Diploma rather than a standalone qualification. These are the programmes that shape MYP tutoring here.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups taught across five years: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. Each subject is assessed against four criteria, each from zero to eight, with the totals converted to a grade from one to seven using published boundaries. Interdisciplinary units, approaches to learning and service as action run alongside.

In Dubai, MYP sits on top of a mandatory subject requirement. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are compulsory in all private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. For a LA Mer MYP student that means a timetable already carrying eight subject groups plus the mandatory subjects, which is the real reason one well-placed tutoring hour outperforms two.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

What MYP 5 students in continuum schools move into. The Diploma reintroduces terminal examinations, which is the single largest change a student experiences, along with internal assessments carrying fixed percentages. Students who have been marked only against criteria for five years meet timed recall under exam conditions for the first time.

The MYP to Diploma step is the moment tutoring demand in this cluster peaks. The specific gap is not knowledge; it is timed performance and the conventions of a mark scheme. Work done in MYP 5 on writing to a mark allocation and on finishing under time pressure is worth more than content coverage, and it is cheaper then than in the first Diploma term.

PYPAges 3-12

IB Primary Years Programme

The stage before MYP in continuum schools. Students arriving in MYP 1 from PYP are used to inquiry-led work and to being assessed on process, and the change they feel most is the arrival of four named criteria with numerical marks attached to each.

Families moving a child from a British-curriculum primary school into MYP 1 at a Jumeirah continuum school see the opposite shock: a student used to right-answer marking meets criterion C and discovers that presenting the reasoning is worth as much as reaching the answer. Two or three sessions in the first term usually settle it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP tutoring in this cluster concentrates on particular criteria within particular subject groups. These are the combinations that generate the most sessions, with what each criterion actually rewards.

Mathematics criterion A: knowing and understanding

MYP 1-5

Selecting and applying the right procedure to a familiar problem. The closest thing in MYP to conventional maths marking, and the criterion most students score well on. Low marks here usually indicate a genuine content gap rather than a presentation issue.

Mathematics criterion B: investigating patterns

MYP 1-5

Finding a rule, describing it, and justifying why it holds. The criterion that most often separates a five from a seven, because students spot the pattern and then stop, where the top band requires a general statement and a justification.

Mathematics criterion C: communicating

MYP 1-5

Using appropriate notation, structuring a solution and presenting reasoning so another reader can follow it. The most teachable criterion in the whole programme, and the one families are most surprised to find carries equal weight with content.

Mathematics criterion D: applying mathematics in real-life contexts

MYP 1-5

Setting up a model, interpreting a result in context, and commenting on the model's limitations. Students lose marks by producing a correct calculation and no interpretation, which is a habit rather than a shortfall in ability.

Sciences criterion B: inquiring and designing

MYP 1-5

Writing a testable question, identifying variables, and designing a method someone else could follow. Rewards precision in method writing, and it is the direct ancestor of the Diploma scientific investigation, which makes it worth investing in early.

Sciences criterion C: processing and evaluating

MYP 1-5

Presenting data, drawing a conclusion the data supports, and evaluating the method honestly. The usual failure is a conclusion that overstates what the data shows, and an evaluation that lists limitations without proposing specific improvements.

Language and literature criterion A: analysing

MYP 1-5

Reading a text closely and explaining how a choice the writer made creates an effect. Students describe what happens in the text when the criterion asks how it works, which is a reliable and correctable misreading of the task.

Language and literature criterion C: producing text

MYP 1-5

Writing with a clear purpose, structure and deliberate stylistic choices. Improves faster than almost anything else in MYP when a student is shown the descriptor for the band above the one they are in and asked to rewrite a single paragraph.

Individuals and societies criterion D: thinking critically

MYP 1-5

Evaluating sources, recognising perspective and bias, and building an argument that handles counter-evidence. The criterion Dubai students most often lose marks on, because school tasks reward research effort and the descriptor rewards judgement.

The MYP Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, each from zero to eight, with a process journal alongside the product. A tutor coaches the process, questions the goal and reads reflections; the student does every part of the work themselves.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover almost every MYP booking from this part of Dubai. All teaching is one-to-one over live video.

One criterion-focused weekly hour

A single hour each week aimed at the criterion the student's returned tasks show is holding the grade down, usually communicating or thinking critically rather than knowing and understanding. The work is the student's own marked tasks, read against the published descriptors.

  • Starts from returned tasks with criterion marks on them
  • Descriptor for the band above kept on screen
  • One paragraph or solution rewritten each session
  • Same early slot each week in Gulf Standard Time

Report-season diagnostic

A single session spent reading two or three reports and a folder of marked tasks as a dataset, to find which criteria are consistently low across subjects. Families almost always have this information and have never looked at it this way, and the answer often removes the need for ongoing tutoring in a subject.

  • One paid hour, no ongoing booking required
  • Criterion-by-criterion pattern across subjects
  • Written summary naming the two criteria to target
  • Free trial lesson available beforehand

MYP 5 transition block

Six to eight sessions in the final MYP year aimed at the Diploma step rather than at MYP marks: writing to a mark allocation, finishing under time pressure, and the conventions of an externally marked scheme. The gap that matters at this point is timed performance, not content.

  • Timed tasks under exam-style conditions
  • Mark allocation and command terms taught explicitly
  • Subject choice for the Diploma discussed honestly
  • Runs alongside, not instead of, Personal Project work

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in LA Mer

01

How an MYP grade is actually built, criterion by criterion

A one-to-seven MYP grade is not a percentage and it is not an average of test scores. Each subject has four criteria, each marked from zero to eight on individual tasks, and the teacher arrives at a final criterion level for the reporting period by judging the student's recent performance against the descriptors rather than by taking a mean. Those four levels, totalling up to 32, are then converted to a grade from one to seven using published boundaries.

The practical consequence is that a student can be good at a subject and receive a middling grade, because two of the four criteria are untouched by whatever they are good at. A mathematically confident MYP 4 student who writes nothing down will score highly on knowing and understanding and poorly on communicating, and those two carry equal weight. The grade reflects both honestly. Families frequently read that grade as a verdict on ability when it is a verdict on two specific behaviours.

This is why reading the criterion marks matters more than reading the grade. The table below sets out the four criteria for the subject groups LA Mer families ask about most, which makes the pattern easier to find in a folder of returned work. A criterion that is low in one subject is a subject issue. The same criterion low across three subjects is a skill issue, and a skill issue is what one weekly hour can genuinely change.

One caution on the numbers. The zero-to-eight scale is not linear in the way a mark out of eight feels: the descriptors describe qualitatively different performances, and moving from a four to a six usually means doing something the student is not currently doing at all rather than doing the same thing better. That is why the most effective MYP session involves reading the descriptor for the next band aloud and rewriting one piece of work to meet it.

02

Where LA Mer MYP students lose criterion marks most predictably

  • Stopping at the answer where the band above wants a justification
  • Describing where the criterion asks how or why
  • Treating communication as presentation rather than as assessed work
  • Evaluations that list limitations without proposing an improvement

Across subjects and across schools in this cluster, the losses cluster in the same three places, and all three are habits rather than deficits.

The first is stopping at the answer. In mathematics criterion B, a student finds the pattern, writes the rule, and stops. The upper bands require a general statement and a justification of why the rule holds, which is one further sentence of a kind nobody has asked them to write. In sciences criterion C, a student presents the data and concludes that the hypothesis was supported, where the descriptor wants a conclusion that is proportionate to the data and an evaluation that proposes a specific improvement. The marks are not lost through error; they are lost through finishing early.

The second is describing where the task asks for analysis. Language and literature criterion A rewards explaining how a writer's choice produces an effect. Individuals and societies criterion D rewards judgement between competing accounts. In both, students produce careful, well-organised description and receive a middling mark, which feels arbitrary until the descriptor is read next to the work. This is the single most common complaint parents in this cluster bring to a first session, and it has a concrete answer.

The third is presentation treated as optional. Criterion C in mathematics and criterion D in language and literature both reward communication directly. Students who regard setting out their reasoning as a formality rather than as assessed work are conceding a quarter of the available marks before the task begins. Fixing it is a matter of rewriting two or three pieces of work with the descriptor visible, and it moves faster than any other intervention available in the programme.

03

The Personal Project: what a tutor may coach and what it must not touch

In MYP 5 the Personal Project becomes the single largest piece of independent work a student has produced, and it is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, each from zero to eight, with a process journal kept alongside the product. It is also where the boundary around tutoring has to be stated most plainly, because it is the piece of work most often outsourced.

What goes wrong is rarely the product. It is the goal and the journal. Students choose a goal that cannot be shown to have been achieved, or one so large that the applying-skills criterion has nothing specific to point at. Then the process journal is written retrospectively in a weekend, which is visible to any experienced reader and which makes the reflecting criterion impossible to score well. Both failures happen early and both are preventable by asking better questions at the start.

That is the legitimate role for a tutor, and it is genuinely useful. Questioning whether a goal is specific enough to be evidenced. Explaining what each of the three criteria rewards and what the descriptors actually say. Asking the student what they did this week and why, so the journal is a record rather than a reconstruction. Reading a reflection the student has written and asking what is missing from it.

What a tutor does not do is write, draft, redraft or supply any part of the project, the report or the journal, and nobody here will. The work must be the student's own, and submitting work that is not is a malpractice risk that falls on the student rather than on whoever sold it. At least one operator appearing in these searches sells completed assessed work outright, which should be read as a warning rather than as an option.

04

The MYP 5 to Diploma step, and why it is not a content problem

The most valuable tutoring a continuum family in LA Mer can buy is often not MYP tutoring at all. It is work in the final MYP year aimed at the Diploma, because the step between the two is larger than the step between any two MYP years and it catches confident students.

The reason is structural. A student who has spent five years being assessed against criteria on teacher-designed tasks, with drafting, feedback and often a second attempt, arrives in the Diploma to meet terminal examinations, externally set questions, fixed mark allocations and a clock. Nothing about their content knowledge is the problem. What is new is finishing, writing to the marks available, recognising command terms, and accepting that a first attempt is the only attempt.

The specific gaps show up in the first Diploma term with some consistency. Students write beautifully structured answers that are twice as long as the mark allocation justifies and run out of time. They treat a four-mark explain question as an invitation to discuss rather than as a demand for four distinct points. In the sciences they are strong on inquiry design, which MYP rewarded heavily, and under-practised at quantitative questions under time pressure. In mathematics they are comfortable investigating and uncomfortable with speed and accuracy on routine procedure.

None of that needs a great deal of time to address, but it needs to be addressed deliberately. Six to eight sessions in MYP 5 spent on timed tasks, mark allocations and command terms is a cheaper and more effective purchase than a term of catch-up in Year 12, and it leaves the student entering the Diploma with the habit already formed.

Fitting an MYP session into the Jumeirah afternoon

MYP students are between eleven and sixteen, and the younger end of that range has a usable evening considerably shorter than a Diploma student's. That changes the timetable arithmetic in this cluster in a way most tutoring pages ignore.

The sequence is familiar. School in the Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim cluster ends between about 2:45pm and 3:30pm. The drive home across Al Wasl Road or along Jumeirah Beach Road takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Activity programmes occupy roughly 4pm to 6pm for most students. For a Diploma student that leaves a workable 6:45pm or 7:30pm slot. For an MYP 2 student it frequently does not: concentration on a criterion-focused task after 7:30pm produces compliance rather than learning, and the session becomes expensive supervision.

The practical answer is to find an early slot on the one or two days a week when the activity calendar allows it, and to accept one hour rather than two. Where no early slot exists, 6:30pm is the latest that reliably works for the younger years, and the session should be shorter rather than later. A forty-five minute session that the student is awake for is worth more than an hour they are not.

The table maps the afternoon as it actually runs. The useful conclusion is that an MYP family in LA Mer should be choosing a slot before choosing a tutor, because the slot is the scarcer resource. One criterion-focused hour at a time the student can think is the whole intervention most of these families need.

The mandatory UAE subjects alongside eight MYP subject groups

  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools
  • Separate classes are required for Arabs and non-Arabs in the relevant subjects
  • Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit
  • Additional content needs prior Ministry of Education permission

An MYP timetable in Dubai is fuller than the eight subject groups suggest, and this is worth understanding before adding tutored hours to it. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA required these arrangements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April.

The requirements are specific. KHDA requires separate classes by group: for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, with the school's licensed-curriculum language used for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in Moral, Social and Cultural studies.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools must also ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects, and the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is not permitted, which limits how any tutoring in those subjects can honestly be described.

For a LA Mer family the arithmetic is the point. Eight MYP subject groups, the mandatory subjects, an activity programme, and in MYP 5 the Personal Project, all inside a week that ends at 3:30pm. That is the reason this page recommends one targeted hour rather than a package of several, and the reason the hour should be aimed at a criterion rather than at a subject.

07

What MYP support costs in Dubai, and why travel is the wrong thing to pay for

Home tutoring is the common search and the honest answer starts with the market. In-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai is quoted at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel included, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table putting the usual range at AED 180 to AED 350. Qualified online subject tutors are published at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors listing IB rates from AED 200 and TutorChase AED 270 for specialist work. Budget online options sit lower, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65. Those are market figures from the named providers, read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

For MYP specifically the premium is harder to justify than at Diploma level, because the thing a family most needs is not a rare specialism. It is somebody who can read a criterion descriptor next to a marked task and show a thirteen-year-old what the band above requires. That is skilled work and it is not scarce work, and paying a travel premium for it is paying for a drive down Al Wasl Road.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. LA Mer families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For criterion work the format has a direct benefit: the descriptor and the student's own task sit side by side on screen, the rewritten paragraph is produced in the session and kept, and the comparison between a four and a six becomes something the student can see rather than something they are told.

The budget point worth making is the opposite of an upsell. Most MYP families in this cluster need one diagnostic session and then one weekly hour on a single criterion for a term, after which the habit holds and the tutoring can stop. A provider recommending three subjects at once to an MYP 2 student is selling hours rather than solving anything.

Where we tutor

LA Mer and the surrounding communities we teach

The session timing described here holds along the Jumeirah coast, where school finishes and activity programmes are close to identical. These are the neighbouring communities whose MYP families face the same week.

LA Mer

Beachfront apartments and townhouses off Jumeirah Beach Road. The single beach-road exit at the end of the school day means an MYP session rarely starts before 4:45pm.

Jumeirah 1

Villa streets immediately inland with short drives home, which is what makes the earlier 4:45pm slot genuinely available for younger students here.

Pearl Jumeira

One causeway in and out, so the school-run exit is a single queue. MYP families here usually settle on 6:30pm, which is late but workable for this age group.

City Walk

Dense low-rise apartments across Al Wasl Road. For a twelve-year-old the lift and basement waits at either end of a journey are the difference between an early slot and an evening one.

Al Wasl

The through-corridor for this cluster's school traffic. Two crossings in an afternoon is most of the usable window for an MYP student, which is why the online format matters more at this age than at Diploma level.

Jumeirah 2

Established villas with a mix of continuum and British-curriculum families. Demand here peaks around report season, when criterion marks arrive and the pattern becomes visible.

Jumeirah 3

Towards Umm Suqeim, with longer internal drives. An MYP session from this stretch is viable at 4:45pm only because no travel is involved at the tutor's end.

Umm Suqeim

Several large schools with staggered finishes and heavy afternoon traffic. MYP planning here starts from the activity calendar, since younger students cannot absorb a late evening session.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked tasks, not the report grade

The useful material is two or three returned tasks per subject with criterion marks written on them. The grade tells you a level; the criterion marks tell you which of four things is holding it down. Most families already have this in a folder and have never read it as a pattern.

  2. 02

    Take the free trial lesson

A full session at no charge, taught rather than pitched, with the student. The tutor reads a marked task against the published descriptor and starts working. One trial lesson per student, before any booking; if the match is wrong, say so and nothing is owed.

  3. 03

Pick one criterion, not three subjects

If communicating is low in mathematics, in the sciences and in individuals and societies, that is one skill problem rather than three subject problems. The hour targets the criterion and the improvement shows up across all three, which is how one session does the work of several.

  4. 04

Choose the slot before the tutor

For MYP the scarcer resource is an hour when the student can still think. We ask for school finish time and activity days first, and recommend an earlier, shorter session over a longer, later one. After 8:30pm nothing useful happens for this age group.

  5. 05

    Stop when the habit holds

Most MYP interventions are a term, not a year. Once the student is routinely writing the justification sentence or setting out reasoning without being asked, the tutoring has done its job. We will say so rather than extend the booking, and in MYP 5 the hours redirect to the Diploma step instead.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criteria taught, not just subjects

An MYP grade is four criteria each marked zero to eight, and two of them usually have nothing to do with content. Sessions work from the published descriptors next to the student's own marked task, because that is what the mark was actually given against.

Diagnosis from work you already have

Returned tasks with criterion marks are a dataset most families never read as one. A single session spent reading them across subjects frequently shows one skill problem rather than three subject problems, and sometimes removes the need for ongoing tutoring entirely.

Timing matched to the student's age

A twelve-year-old's usable evening in this cluster ends earlier than a Diploma student's. We recommend an earlier and shorter session rather than a longer later one, and we will say when a requested slot is too late to be worth paying for.

Descriptors and work side by side on screen

The fastest change in MYP comes from reading the band above aloud and rewriting one paragraph to meet it. Online delivery puts the descriptor and the student's own task in view together, and the rewritten version is kept rather than lost on paper.

Firm limits on the Personal Project

A tutor questions the goal, explains what each criterion rewards, and asks what went into the process journal this week. No part of the project, the report or the journal is written, drafted or supplied here, because the work has to be the student's own.

An end point, stated in advance

Most MYP tutoring should last a term. No grade or improvement is guaranteed, because none honestly can be, and the recommendation at the end of a term is sometimes to stop. A provider proposing three subjects at once for an MYP 2 student is selling hours.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in LA Mer: your questions answered

What does an MYP tutor actually do when there are no exams to prepare for?+

Works on the four criteria the student is marked against. Every MYP subject is assessed on four criteria, each from zero to eight, on tasks the class teacher designs. A tutor reads the student's returned work next to the published descriptors, identifies which criterion is holding the grade down, and teaches that specifically. Often it is communicating or thinking critically rather than knowing and understanding, which means more practice questions would change nothing. The work is reading the descriptor for the band above and rewriting to meet it.

How is a one-to-seven MYP grade calculated from criterion marks?+

Each of the four criteria is given a level from zero to eight for the reporting period, based on the teacher's judgement of recent performance against the descriptors rather than an average of scores. The four levels total up to 32, and that total converts to a grade from one to seven using published boundaries. The practical consequence is that a student strong in two criteria and weak in the other two receives a middling grade, which parents often read as a verdict on ability rather than on two specific behaviours.

My child scores well on criterion A but badly on criterion C. What does that mean?+

It means the thinking is sound and the communication of it is not, and that is the most fixable pattern in the programme. In mathematics criterion C rewards notation, structure and reasoning another reader can follow. In language and literature the equivalent is producing text. Students who regard setting out their working as presentation rather than as assessed work concede roughly a quarter of the available marks before starting. Rewriting two or three pieces with the descriptor visible usually shifts it within a term.

Why do careful, well-researched MYP essays still get middling marks?+

Usually because the task asked for analysis and received description. Language and literature criterion A rewards explaining how a writer's choice creates an effect, not recounting what happens. Individuals and societies criterion D rewards judgement between competing accounts, not the volume of research gathered. A student can work hard, organise well, and land in the middle bands because they have answered a slightly different question. Reading the descriptor next to their own paragraph is usually the moment it becomes obvious.

What stops a mathematics criterion B mark from reaching the top band?+

Stopping at the rule. Criterion B rewards investigating patterns, and students reliably find the pattern, state it, and finish. The upper bands want a general statement of the rule and a justification of why it holds, which is one more sentence of a kind nobody has explicitly asked them to write. It is not a mathematical shortfall; it is an unwritten expectation. Once a student has written that sentence three or four times with feedback, they write it automatically, and the criterion mark moves.

What time should an MYP session start for a LA Mer student?+

Earlier than you would schedule a Diploma session. School in this cluster ends between 2:45pm and 3:30pm, the drive home takes thirty to forty-five minutes, and activity programmes run to about 6pm. A 4:45pm start on a day without activities is the best option. Where that does not exist, 6:30pm works for the younger years and should be kept short. After 8:30pm an eleven or twelve-year-old produces compliance rather than learning, and the hour becomes expensive supervision.

Is a forty-five minute MYP session better than a full hour?+

For MYP 1 to 3, often yes, if the shorter session is at a time the student is genuinely alert. Criterion work requires reading a descriptor, comparing it with their own writing and producing something new, which is demanding in a different way from drilling practice questions. Forty-five focused minutes at 4:45pm will produce a rewritten paragraph; an hour at 8pm will produce agreement that the paragraph could be better. For MYP 4 and 5 a full hour is normally the right unit.

Can a tutor help with the MYP Personal Project in MYP 5?+

With the process, yes; with the work, no. A tutor questions whether the goal is specific enough to be evidenced, explains what the planning, applying skills and reflecting criteria each reward, and asks what went into the process journal that week so it is a record rather than a reconstruction. A tutor does not write, draft, redraft or supply any part of the project, report or journal. Submitting work that is not the student's own is a malpractice risk that falls on the student alone.

Why do Personal Projects lose marks even when the product is good?+

Because the marks are not for the product. They are for planning, applying skills and reflecting, each from zero to eight. Two failures dominate: a goal so broad that nothing specific can be shown to have been achieved, and a process journal written retrospectively in a weekend, which any experienced reader can spot and which makes the reflecting criterion impossible to score well. Both happen in the first few weeks, which is why early questioning of the goal is worth more than late help with the writing.

Is the MYP 5 to Diploma step really that difficult for a strong student?+

It catches strong students in particular. Five years of criterion marking on teacher-designed tasks, with drafting and feedback, gives way to terminal examinations, externally set questions, fixed mark allocations and a clock. Content knowledge is rarely the problem. What is new is finishing, writing to the marks available rather than to the quality the student wants, recognising command terms, and accepting a single attempt. Six to eight sessions in MYP 5 on timed tasks costs less than a term of catch-up in Year 12.

Does MYP prepare a Dubai student adequately for IGCSE if they transfer?+

It prepares them well for some things and leaves a specific gap. A student moving from MYP 5 into an IGCSE cohort arrives confident designing investigations and constructing arguments, and short on timed recall of defined content and on the conventions of an external mark scheme. That gap is real and bounded: roughly a term of work on definitions, formulae and paper technique rather than on thinking. It is far cheaper to close in the summer before the transfer than in the middle of Year 11.

How do Dubai's mandatory subjects affect an MYP week?+

They add real timetable load on top of eight subject groups. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and KHDA advises at least 25 minutes per mandatory lesson. Schools must also organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in the relevant subjects. One targeted tutored hour fits that week; a package of three does not.

Does IB Gram send an MYP tutor to homes in LA Mer?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. LA Mer families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For criterion work this format has a specific benefit: the published descriptor and the student's own marked task sit side by side on screen, the rewritten paragraph is produced during the session and kept, and the difference between a four and a six becomes visible rather than described.

How long should MYP tutoring last before we stop?+

A term, for most families. Once a student routinely writes the justification sentence, sets out reasoning without being asked, or proposes a specific improvement in an evaluation, the habit has formed and the paid hours stop adding much. Continuing past that point buys reassurance rather than progress. In MYP 5 the sensible move is to redirect the hours towards the Diploma step instead, which is a different and time-limited piece of work. No tutor can honestly guarantee a grade or a criterion level.

Read the criterion marks before buying anything

The most useful hour an MYP family in LA Mer can spend costs nothing: pulling two or three marked tasks per subject out of the folder and reading the criterion marks across them rather than the grades. Nine times in ten a pattern appears, and it is one skill rather than three subjects. Bring that pattern to the free trial lesson, which is a taught session rather than a sales call, and ask the tutor to work from the published descriptor for the band above. Teaching runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, at an hour the student can still think.
