IB Maths Tutor in LA Mer

Hiring an IB maths tutor in LA Mer is a more expensive decision than it looks, because the first thing that determines the bill is not the hourly rate but whether your child is on Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and at which level. This page costs that out properly for families on the Jumeirah 1 coast. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • The AA and AI decision explained before any rate is discussed
  • Exploration criteria coached, never written, rewritten or edited to completion
  • Live online one-to-one delivery; IB Gram makes no UAE home visits
  • Hour counts given per failure mode, so a total can be calculated

IB & IGCSE in LA Mer

What the maths decision costs before a single session is booked

There are four Diploma mathematics courses, not one. Analysis and Approaches at Higher and Standard Level, and Applications and Interpretation at Higher and Standard Level. They share a core and then diverge substantially: AA is algebraic and proof-led with calculus carrying the Higher Level weight, while AI is modelling and statistics led with technology assumed throughout. A tutor who is strong in one is not automatically strong in the other, and a family who hires without naming the route is buying a lottery ticket with a four-way draw.

The cost consequence is immediate. A student placed in Analysis and Approaches Higher Level on the strength of enthusiasm rather than attainment will need ninety minutes a week for two years and may still be short in the final term. The same student in Applications and Interpretation Standard Level might need twelve hours in total. Published Dubai market rates put specialist IB tuition at roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour, with Unitors starting its IB tuition at AED 200 and TutorChase quoting AED 270, from sources read in October 2026. Those are other providers' figures, not ours. Multiply the honest hour count by any of them and the route decision dwarfs the rate decision.

Then there is the premium a LA Mer address attracts. Published in-home rates in Dubai run AED 180 to AED 500 an hour including travel, against AED 150 to AED 300 for a comparable tutor online. What that extra buys, specifically, is a car on the Jumeirah Road between five and seven in the evening. It does not buy better teaching, and for a subject where the shortlist of genuine Analysis and Approaches Higher Level specialists is already small, insisting on someone who can park near the beachfront by 6pm shrinks that shortlist to whoever is nearby and free. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India.

The second cost driver, after the route, is the exploration. Every Diploma mathematics student produces one internally assessed exploration, marked against named criteria and externally moderated. Capable mathematicians routinely score in the middle bands on it, not because the mathematics is wrong but because the communication, the reflection or the personal engagement was never addressed. That is the cheapest set of marks in the whole course to improve and the one most commonly left to chance, because it is nobody's examination revision and it has no past paper.

What follows is the detail a LA Mer family needs to spend sensibly: the AA and AI comparison set out properly, Higher against Standard Level by paper and weighting, the exploration counted backwards from the school's own internal deadline, a topic-by-topic account of where marks are actually lost and roughly how many hours each costs to fix, the technology the course assumes, the transition into Diploma maths from IGCSE and MYP, the honesty boundary on the exploration, and how session timing works around the Al Wasl and Al Safa school run.

At a glance

  • Four courses, not one: AA and AI, each at Higher and Standard Level
  • Route and level set the hour count; the hourly rate is the smaller variable
  • Published Dubai specialist IB rates: roughly AED 200 to AED 450 per hour, attributed and dated
  • The exploration is the cheapest grade movement in the course and the most neglected
  • A tutor coaches the exploration; the mathematics and the writing are the student's own
  • IB Gram teaches LA Mer families online only, one free trial lesson per family first
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Diploma mathematics sits at the end of a sequence, and where a LA Mer student is in that sequence determines what tutoring can usefully do. These are the stages and what each one actually requires.

DP AAAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

The algebraic and proof-led route, with calculus carrying the Higher Level weight. Students who enjoyed Additional Mathematics at IGCSE generally belong here. The Higher Level course is the most demanding mathematics most Dubai school students will meet, and the one where a weak algebraic base is least survivable because every later topic compounds it.

Universities in the UAE and abroad set their own prerequisites and change them, so confirm whether a target degree expects Analysis and Approaches specifically with the admissions office rather than with any tutoring site. This page names no university requirement, because none in this research was read from a university's own page.

DP AIAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Modelling and statistics led, with technology assumed throughout and statistical inference arriving at Higher Level. Chosen by students heading towards business, social sciences, design and many life science routes. It is not an easy option, and students who select it expecting one commonly find the statistics unfamiliar rather than undemanding.

The route choice is a degree decision made two years early, and Dubai school students are frequently asked to make it in Year 11 with incomplete information. The useful intervention is a single session on course choice before Year 12 begins, which is worth more than many hours of remedial work later.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Mathematics

Criterion-referenced mathematics across five years, reported on a one-to-eight scale per criterion rather than as a percentage. Strong MYP criterion scores do not predict Diploma grades, because the Diploma assesses different things in a different format. The transition into Analysis and Approaches is where that gap shows up, usually in algebraic fluency.

At Jumeira Baccalaureate School and Emirates International School Jumeirah, MYP mathematics runs alongside the KHDA mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies requirements, which is timetable time that a family new to the Dubai system does not budget for.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and Additional Mathematics

The route most LA Mer students take if their school is British curriculum before switching to the Diploma. Cambridge 0580 Extended is the usual entry point and Additional Mathematics is the better one, because calculus notation and proof structure appear there first. Students who skip Additional Mathematics meet both unfamiliar in the first term of Analysis and Approaches.

For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3 are required, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count. Mathematics will normally be one of those five, which is worth knowing before dropping it to a lower tier.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma mathematics breaks into topic areas with distinct failure modes, and tutoring is efficient only when it targets the right one. These are the areas LA Mer students most often need, with where the marks go.

Algebra and sequences

AA and AI, HL and SL

The load-bearing wall. Binomial expansion, logarithms and series work are where an insecure base shows first, and every later topic rests on manipulation fluency. A student who cannot rearrange confidently will lose marks in calculus questions that have nothing to do with algebra, which is why diagnosis starts here.

Functions and graphing

AA and AI, HL and SL

Transformations, inverse functions, domain and range. Marks are lost on stating a domain restriction rather than on the algebra, and on sketching without labelling the features the question asked for. Short, cheap to fix, and routinely dropped because the student believes they understand it.

Calculus, differentiation

AA HL and SL, AI HL

Chain, product and quotient rules, then optimisation and kinematics. Higher Level adds implicit differentiation and related rates. The usual failure is not the rule but the setup: a correct derivative of an incorrectly formed expression. Teaching the modelling step before the differentiation step is the intervention that works.

Calculus, integration

AA HL and SL, AI HL

Where Analysis and Approaches Higher Level separates students decisively. Substitution, parts and partial fractions at Higher Level, with volumes of revolution and differential equations beyond. This is the single largest consumer of tutoring hours in the whole Diploma maths syllabus and the topic most worth starting early rather than revising late.

Trigonometry and identities

AA HL and SL

Radians, identities, compound angles and solving in a specified interval. The commonest lost mark is giving a correct solution and missing the others inside the interval, which is a technique rather than a knowledge problem and takes two sessions to fix permanently.

Proof

AA HL

Direct proof, contradiction, and proof by induction. Students who have never been taught what counts as a complete argument write true statements that score nothing. The structure is learnable quickly and is one of the highest returns per hour available in Analysis and Approaches Higher Level.

Statistics and probability

AI HL and SL, AA SL

Distributions, correlation, and at Applications and Interpretation Higher Level, statistical inference including hypothesis testing. Students coming from a British curriculum frequently meet inference for the first time here, and treating it as formula recall rather than as reasoning about evidence is why it costs them marks.

Vectors

AA HL, AI HL

Lines, planes, scalar and vector products at Higher Level. Geometric interpretation is where marks go: a student who can compute a vector product but cannot say what it means geometrically answers half the question. Worth four to six focused hours rather than a general sweep.

Technology and the graphing calculator

AA and AI, all levels

Applications and Interpretation assumes technology throughout and both routes examine calculator-permitted papers. Students lose marks by using the calculator where working is required, and by not using it where it would be faster. The school states the permitted model and the examination regulations; confirm both with the school rather than with any tutoring page.

The exploration

AA and AI, HL and SL

One internally assessed piece of work, marked against named criteria and externally moderated. Strong mathematicians commonly score mid-band because communication, reflection or visible personal engagement were never addressed. A tutor coaches the question, teaches the criteria and critiques drafts; the mathematics and the writing must be the student's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Diploma maths support is bought on this coast, all delivered live online and one-to-one. The shape should follow the diagnosis rather than the calendar.

Weekly across the two-year course

Ninety minutes a week at Higher Level, sixty at Standard, from early in Year 12 to the final paper. The value is continuity: a tutor who was present when integration was first taught does not have to reconstruct what the student misunderstood eighteen months later. For Analysis and Approaches Higher Level this is the only shape that reliably works.

  • Ninety minutes for Higher Level, sixty for Standard
  • Follows the school's scheme of work, not a parallel syllabus
  • Steps into exploration coaching as the internal deadline approaches
  • Paused during the school's own assessment weeks

Topic block on one named area

Six to ten sessions aimed at integration, or proof, or statistical inference, or vectors. The most efficient purchase in Diploma mathematics and the one families underuse, because it requires naming the topic rather than booking general help. A marked paper names it in minutes; a report grade never does.

  • Diagnosed from the student's own marked work
  • Six to ten sessions with a defined end
  • Worked at paper standard from the first session
  • Stops when the topic holds under timed conditions

Exploration coaching

Four to six sessions spread across the drafting period: narrowing the question until the mathematics is genuinely at the right level, teaching the criteria so the student knows what is being marked, and critiquing drafts the student has written. The mathematics and the prose are the student's own work throughout, without exception.

  • Research question challenged until it is answerable at the right level
  • Criteria read with the student before they write anything
  • Drafts critiqued against each criterion, never rewritten
  • Mapped backwards from the school's internal deadline

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: the decision that sets the bill

This choice is made in Year 11 and paid for over two years. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-led, with calculus carrying the Higher Level weight. Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics led, with technology assumed throughout and statistical inference at Higher Level. They are not a harder and an easier version of the same course; they are different courses that suit different students and different degrees.

Two mistakes dominate. The first is choosing Analysis and Approaches because it sounds more rigorous, without the algebraic fluency to carry it, which produces a two-year struggle and the largest tutoring bill available in the Diploma. The second is choosing Applications and Interpretation to avoid difficulty and discovering that statistical inference is genuinely demanding and entirely unfamiliar. Both mistakes are made because the decision is framed as a difficulty question when it is a fit and prerequisite question.

The prerequisite part has to be checked at source. Universities set their own entry requirements, revise them, and differ between countries and between faculties within a university. This page deliberately names no university requirement, because none was read from a university's own admissions page in this research, and a tutoring site that tells you which route a specific degree demands is guessing with your child's two years. Email the admissions office of two or three target universities in Year 11 and ask directly. It takes a week, it is free, and it is more reliable than any summary on any tutoring site.

Higher Level against Standard Level, by paper and by hour

Level determines the hours more than route does. Higher Level adds content, adds an additional examination paper in both routes, and raises the analytical demand on the exploration without changing its criteria. A Standard Level student who is coping needs an hour a week and a block before the papers. A Higher Level student who is behind can absorb ninety minutes a week for two years and want more in the final term, which is the single largest tutoring commitment in the Diploma.

The structural point worth understanding is that the extra Higher Level paper carries its own technique, not merely more of the same content. A student who has practised only the shorter papers meets a different kind of question in the extended one and performs below their understanding. This is a teachable, finite problem and it is where a specialist earns the difference between the AED 200 and AED 450 ends of the published Dubai specialist band.

There is also a ceiling on usefulness. A Diploma candidate carries six subjects, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay and a service requirement. Past roughly ninety minutes a week in one subject, additional tutoring competes with the student's own study time and with the other five subjects rather than adding to them. Families buying four maths sessions a week are usually buying the thing that makes the rest of the Diploma worse, and a tutor who accepts that booking without saying so is not advising you.

03

The exploration, counted backwards from your school's deadline

Every Diploma mathematics student produces one exploration, internally assessed against named criteria and externally moderated. It is worth a meaningful share of the final grade and it is the only part of the course with no past paper, no mark scheme to practise against, and no revision guide that helps. It is therefore the part where a capable student most often loses marks they could easily have kept, and where tutoring money does the most work per hour.

The schedule is what fails, not the mathematics. A student with a vague topic in September has a vague topic in January, writes in a weekend, and submits something whose mathematics is sound and whose communication, reflection and visible engagement were never considered. Working backwards from the school's own internal deadline, rather than from the IB session, is the fix, because the school's dates are the binding ones and they arrive earlier than families expect.

A note on the criteria. Diploma internal assessments are marked criterion by criterion, each with its own descriptors, and a strong piece can be capped by one criterion that was never addressed. Criterion sets and mark allocations are revised by cohort, so read the current version in your child's own subject guide with them, and confirm anything uncertain with the school's maths teacher or IB coordinator rather than with a tutoring page, including this one. What a tutor contributes is the habit of reading the criteria before writing, which most students never do.

04

Where maths marks are actually lost, and what each costs to fix

Tutoring in mathematics is efficient only when aimed. A general weekly hour across a two-year Higher Level course covers everything and fixes nothing in particular, which is why families finish the year surprised that a substantial spend produced a modest change. The alternative is to start from a marked paper, identify the two or three failure modes that are actually costing marks, and buy hours against those.

The failure modes are more consistent than parents expect. Insecure algebraic manipulation showing up as calculus errors. Solving trigonometric equations and finding one solution instead of all of them in the interval. Writing true statements in a proof question that do not constitute an argument. Setting up an optimisation problem incorrectly and then differentiating the wrong expression flawlessly. Treating statistical inference as formula recall. Using the graphing calculator where working is required, or failing to use it where it saves four minutes.

Each of these is finite. The table gives rough hour counts, which exist so a family can calculate rather than guess. Multiply by the published Dubai specialist band of roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour and you have a real budget for a real problem, instead of an open weekly commitment with no end condition. The discipline that matters is the end condition: a topic block should stop when the topic holds under timed conditions, not when the term does. A tutor who cannot describe what the end of the block looks like is describing an open commitment, and families on this coast have paid for several of those.

Moving into Diploma maths from IGCSE or MYP

The first term of Diploma mathematics is where transfer gaps surface, and in LA Mer plenty of students transfer. A child who did Cambridge 0580 Extended and no Additional Mathematics meets calculus notation and formal proof for the first time at sixteen, alongside five other new subjects. A child arriving from MYP has criterion grades that say nothing predictive about Diploma performance, because the two systems assess different things in different formats.

The gap is almost always one of three things, and it is almost never general ability. It is algebraic fluency, which Additional Mathematics builds and Extended IGCSE only partly does. It is notation, where a student who understands a concept cannot read the way the Diploma writes it. Or it is the expectation of justification, where IGCSE often accepts an answer and the Diploma expects an argument. All three are closable in a short block, and all three are far cheaper to close in the summer before Year 12 than in the spring of Year 13.

The practical recommendation for a LA Mer family is a short diagnostic block in that summer: four to six sessions on algebraic fluency and notation for a student heading into Analysis and Approaches, or on data handling and modelling conventions for one heading into Applications and Interpretation. Nothing else is competing for the student's time, the rate is the same as it would be in term, and the hours do several times the work they would do once four internal assessments and an Extended Essay are running simultaneously.

The honesty line on a mathematics exploration

  • Legitimate: topic testing, scope control, criteria teaching, draft critique
  • Not legitimate: producing mathematics or prose the student submits
  • Technique the student cannot justify costs more marks than it gains
  • Official IB material is linked, never supplied as a download

One of the sites competing for this search sells completed Internal Assessments. For a mathematics exploration this is both a malpractice trigger and, practically, easy to detect, because a piece of work whose mathematical level does not match the student's examination performance invites exactly the scrutiny a family does not want. The consequence falls on the student's Diploma, not on the vendor, and no deadline justifies it.

Legitimate exploration support is specific and worth paying for. A tutor may test whether a candidate topic contains mathematics at the right level, challenge the research question until it can be completed within scope, teach what each criterion rewards, read a draft the student has written and say precisely where it falls short of a criterion, and keep the student's chosen technique inside what they can genuinely justify. That last point is underrated: ambitious technique the student cannot explain loses more marks than modest technique they own completely.

What a tutor may not do is produce mathematics the student then presents, write or rewrite prose, edit a draft to a standard, or supply text or working that ends up in the submission. IB Gram tutors teach, review and give feedback on the student's own work. We also do not reproduce or supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade boundary tables, because those belong to the IB; we reference and link the official source instead. Say this boundary to your child before the first exploration session, in those words.

Fitting sessions around the LA Mer school day

  • Pickup between about 2:40pm and 3:30pm makes a 4pm online session realistic
  • Ninety minutes at 4:30pm outperforms ninety minutes at 7:30pm for Higher Level
  • Two shorter sessions beat one long one when the only slot is late
  • Pause during school assessment weeks; assume disruption around Ramadan

Mathematics is a poor subject to teach at the end of a long day, which makes session timing a real variable rather than an administrative one. Pickup for the schools most LA Mer students attend runs between roughly 2:40pm and 3:30pm depending on school and year group. That makes a 4pm or 4:30pm session genuinely available online, which is the single largest practical difference from a home visit, where the tutor's own drive across Dubai usually makes 6pm the earliest realistic slot.

For a Higher Level student, ninety minutes at 4:30pm reliably outperforms ninety minutes at 7:30pm, and parents who have tried both say so. Where an early slot is impossible, two shorter sessions in a week work better than one long evening one, because the limiting factor at that hour is attention rather than time. Online delivery makes splitting a weekly ninety minutes into two forty-five minute sessions trivial; a visiting tutor cannot absorb two drives for the same fee.

The two calendar features to build in are the school's own assessment weeks and Ramadan. Paying for sessions during a week of school examinations buys hours the student cannot use, so pause them. Ramadan shortens the school day, shifts routines later, and falls at a different point each year because it follows the lunar calendar, so a plan should assume disruption rather than a fixed date. Post-Iftar sessions work well for many families and are easy to schedule online, which is awkward for a tutor whose evening is already routed around other households.

Where we tutor

LA Mer and the coast it belongs to

Lessons are delivered over live video, so what follows affects timing, school catchment and the maths route a student is likely on, rather than whether a tutor can reach the address.

LA Mer

The beachfront development on Jumeirah 1, apartments and townhouses behind the promenade. Two IB continuum schools sit within a short drive, so Diploma maths enquiries from this address skew towards Analysis and Approaches rather than general numeracy support.

Jumeirah 1

Villa streets inland from the beach. Households here commonly hold one child on a British route to IGCSE maths and another on a Diploma route, which is two different maths tutors on one evening and the clearest practical argument against a single visiting tutor.

Al Wasl

Across the Jumeirah Road, with Horizon International School Al Wasl. Early-to-mid afternoon pickup means a 4pm maths session is genuinely available, which matters for a subject best taught before a student is tired rather than at 7pm after a long day.

Al Safa

Safa British School and GEMS Wellington Primary School. This is the school calendar that governs a LA Mer plan, and Diploma maths sessions are worth pausing during the school's own assessment weeks rather than competing with them.

Pearl Jumeira

The causeway island off the Al Wasl shore. A younger household profile means more MYP mathematics demand than Diploma, and MYP families here usually want the one-to-eight criterion reporting explained before any teaching begins.

City Walk

Apartments minutes inland from LA Mer. Diploma maths needs ninety uninterrupted minutes and a surface to write on; a closed bedroom door delivers that more reliably than a visiting tutor at the dining table with the household around them.

Umm Suqeim and Al Manara

Further along the coast towards Al Sufouh, feeding Raffles World Academy and the Al Barsha cluster. Longer commutes push maths sessions to 6:30pm or later, which is precisely the slot a travelling tutor has already committed elsewhere.

Palm Jumeirah

Across the water, with a comparable mix of British and IB enrolment and the same Analysis and Approaches demand. The trunk road commute is why online scheduling took hold here first, and families cite it as the reason they stopped booking visits.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the route and the level

Analysis and Approaches Higher Level is a different booking from Applications and Interpretation Standard Level, and the four combinations need four different specialists. This single detail decides whether the hours you buy are useful, and it is the thing most enquiry forms never ask for.

  2. 02

Send a marked paper and the exploration deadline

One recent assessment with a mark, plus the school's internal deadline for the exploration. The school's date is the binding one and it arrives earlier than families expect. A tutor planning against the examination session alone will plan the wrong twelve months.

  3. 03

Get the failure mode named, not the subject

Insecure algebra showing up as calculus errors needs a different block from missing solutions in an interval. A tutor who can name which one your child has, from the marked paper, in the first session, is a tutor worth the specialist end of the published rate band.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial lesson

One lesson per family, before any payment is taken, ideally at 4pm or 4:30pm after the school run. Watch whether your child does the writing on the shared whiteboard and whether the session ends with something specific that was not true at the start.

  5. 05

Set an end condition, not just a start date

A topic block should stop when the topic holds under timed conditions. A weekly commitment should be reviewed at six sessions against the named weakness. Open-ended maths tutoring with no end condition is the most common way a Diploma family overspends by a wide margin.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to one of four courses, not to IB maths

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation diverge sharply, and each runs at two levels. A tutor is matched to the exact combination your child sits, because paper technique differs between them and a generalist will teach the wrong one for part of the year.

Hours quoted against failure modes

This page gives rough hour counts for the specific things that lose marks in Diploma mathematics, so a family can calculate a budget instead of accepting an open weekly commitment. The hour count, not the hourly rate, is what decides the total spend.

The travel premium is removed, not concealed

Published Dubai in-home rates run AED 180 to AED 500 including travel against AED 150 to AED 300 online for comparable tutors. Online delivery takes the Jumeirah Road out of the invoice. IB Gram makes no home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

Exploration help that cannot trigger a malpractice finding

Tutors test the topic, control the scope, teach the criteria and critique the student's own drafts. They do not produce mathematics or prose that gets submitted. Since one site competing for this exact search sells completed Internal Assessments, stating the boundary is a real differentiator.

No invented university requirements

This page names no university's maths prerequisite, because none was read from a university's own admissions page in this research. The advice is to email two or three target admissions offices in Year 11, which is free and accurate, rather than to trust a tutoring site's summary.

Timing built around the actual school day

Pickup between roughly 2:40pm and 3:30pm makes a 4pm session available online, and mathematics taught then outperforms mathematics taught at 7:30pm. Plans pause for school assessment weeks and flex around Ramadan, which moves each year with the lunar calendar.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in LA Mer: your questions answered

Which IB maths course should my child in LA Mer take, AA or AI?+

It depends on fit and on degree prerequisites, not on difficulty. Analysis and Approaches is algebraic and proof-led with calculus carrying the Higher Level weight; Applications and Interpretation is modelling and statistics led with inference at Higher Level. A student who enjoyed Additional Mathematics at IGCSE usually belongs in Analysis and Approaches. Check prerequisites by emailing two or three target universities' admissions offices in Year 11. This page names no university requirement, because none was read from a university's own page in this research.

How many hours of IB maths tutoring does a Higher Level student actually need?+

Ninety minutes a week from early in Year 12 is the realistic shape for a Higher Level student who is behind, running to the final paper. A Standard Level student who is coping needs about an hour a week plus a block before the papers. Beyond ninety minutes weekly in one subject, tutoring starts competing with the student's own study and with the other five Diploma subjects. At published Dubai specialist rates of roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour, that arithmetic matters more than the rate itself.

What is a LA Mer tutor allowed to do on the mathematics exploration?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may test whether a candidate topic has mathematics at the right level, challenge the research question until the piece is finishable, teach what each criterion rewards, read a draft the student has written and say where it falls short, and keep the student's technique inside what they can justify. A tutor may not produce mathematics or prose that gets submitted, rewrite a draft, or edit it to a standard. One site competing for this search sells completed Internal Assessments; walk away from that.

Why does my child score well in class and badly on IB maths papers?+

Usually one of a short list of technique failures rather than a knowledge gap. Finding one solution to a trigonometric equation instead of all of them in the interval. Setting up an optimisation problem incorrectly and differentiating the wrong expression correctly, which still earns a method mark and hides the gap. Writing true statements in a proof question that do not form an argument. Using the graphing calculator where working is required. Each takes two to six focused sessions, and a marked paper identifies which one in a single session.

Does IB Gram send a maths tutor to a LA Mer home?+

No. IB Gram delivers one-to-one tuition over live video across the UAE and makes no home visits anywhere in the Emirates; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. For Diploma mathematics the trade is clearly in your favour: the pool of genuine Analysis and Approaches Higher Level specialists is small, and requiring one who can reach Jumeirah 1 by 6pm reduces it further. Sessions use a shared whiteboard both tutor and student write on, with an optional recording.

What time can maths sessions start after school in Jumeirah 1?+

Pickup for the schools most LA Mer students attend runs between roughly 2:40pm and 3:30pm, so 4pm or 4:30pm is realistic online. That matters for mathematics specifically, because ninety minutes at 4:30pm reliably outperforms ninety minutes at 7:30pm. A home visit usually cannot start before 6pm, since the tutor's own drive across Dubai has to happen first. Where an early slot is impossible, two shorter sessions in a week work better than one long evening one.

My child did IGCSE maths without Additional Mathematics. Is that a problem for the Diploma?+

It is a known gap rather than a problem, and it is cheap to close at the right moment. Students who did Cambridge 0580 Extended without Additional Mathematics meet calculus notation and formal proof for the first time at sixteen, alongside five other new subjects. Four to six sessions in the summer before Year 12, on algebraic fluency and notation, does several times the work the same hours would do in the spring of Year 13, because nothing else is competing for the student's attention.

Is Applications and Interpretation the easier route?+

No, and choosing it on that basis is a common and expensive error. Applications and Interpretation assumes technology throughout and brings statistical inference at Higher Level, which students arriving from a British curriculum frequently meet for the first time and find genuinely demanding. It is a different course for a different kind of student and a different set of degrees, not a reduced version of Analysis and Approaches. Decide on fit and prerequisites, checked with university admissions offices directly, rather than on perceived difficulty.

How do derivations and graph sketching work in an online maths session?+

Through a shared whiteboard both tutor and student write on, so a derivation is built in front of the student with them doing most of the writing, and a sketch is annotated live rather than described. The student's own marked paper or exploration draft is shared on screen and worked through directly. Sessions can be recorded, which students use heavily before papers and which a home visit never provides. This is the part parents doubt most and the part the free trial lesson settles fastest.

Which IB schools near LA Mer offer all four maths courses?+

Ask each school directly, because not every Dubai IB school runs all four combinations, and a student's route is sometimes set by the school's staffing rather than by their aptitude. The IB schools nearest this coast include Jumeira Baccalaureate School and Emirates International School Jumeirah, with Raffles World Academy, Kings' School Al Barsha and Swiss International Scientific School Dubai drawing from further out. Those schools are named as neighbourhood context; IB Gram has no affiliation or partnership with any of them.

When should we start exploration coaching rather than examination work?+

Work backwards from the school's own internal deadline, which is the binding date and arrives earlier than families expect. The useful sequence is a topic shortlist of three ideas, then narrowing to one answerable question, then attempting the mathematics before any prose is written, then reading the criteria with the student, then a full draft well before the deadline. Four to six sessions spread across that period is typically enough. A student with a vague topic in September still has one in January without this structure.

Which IB session do Dubai students sit, and what about dates?+

Dubai IB schools sit the May session, with November available at a small number of schools worldwide. This page publishes no specific IB examination or results date, because ibo.org blocks automated checking and no IB date in this project has been confirmed from the IB itself. Any site quoting you an exact date should cite ibo.org or your school's IB coordinator. In practice, plan tutoring against the school's internal assessment deadlines, which are earlier and considerably more binding than the session itself.

Can one tutor handle both maths and physics for a Diploma student?+

Occasionally, and wanting it usually costs more than it saves. The internal assessments are marked on different criteria, the papers reward different techniques, and insisting on one person shrinks an already small shortlist of Analysis and Approaches Higher Level specialists. Online, two specialists can take back-to-back slots on the same evening with no travel gap between them, which is the arrangement most LA Mer Diploma families settle on once they stop looking for a single tutor to cover both.

What should the graphing calculator policy be in our planning?+

Confirm the permitted model and the examination regulations with your child's school, not with a tutoring page, because schools state this and regulations are revised. What tutoring addresses is the technique question: students lose marks by using the calculator where working is required, and by not using it where it would save several minutes on a permitted paper. That distinction is rarely taught explicitly by anyone, takes two or three sessions, and applies to both Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation.

What end condition should we set on a Diploma maths topic block?+

Set an end condition at the start. A topic block ends when the topic holds under timed conditions, not when the term ends. A weekly commitment gets reviewed at six sessions against a named weakness, and again at the next school assessment. If the specific thing you bought help for has moved, continue or stop deliberately; if it has not, change the tutor or the plan. Open-ended maths tutoring with no end condition is the most reliable way a Diploma family overspends.

Settle the route, then the failure mode, then the rate

Confirm with the school which of the four Diploma mathematics courses your child sits and at which level, and get the school's internal exploration deadline in writing. Find the most recent marked paper and let a specialist name the failure mode from it rather than describing the subject. Only then discuss hours and price, because the route and the hour count decide the bill and the hourly rate barely moves it. Then take the free trial lesson, one per family and before any payment, ideally in the 4pm slot that online delivery makes available on this coast.
