IB Chemistry Tutor in LA Mer

An IB Chemistry tutor in LA Mer is working inside a week that has already been spent. Senior school days along the Jumeirah 1 shoreline end by about 3:30pm, the activity programme takes the next two hours, and Diploma Chemistry wants more evening time than any other science on the timetable. This page explains why, which two evenings usually work, and what each of them should be used for. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in LA Mer

Why Diploma Chemistry asks for two evenings rather than one

Chemistry is the Diploma science that behaves least well in a single weekly hour, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of difficulty. The course has two halves that need completely different kinds of practice. Structure and the quantitative side of Reactivity are arithmetic: moles, titrations, equilibrium constants, pH, energetics. Organic chemistry and mechanism work are pattern recognition built by repetition, closer to learning a language than to solving a problem. An hour that tries to serve both ends up doing neither, and the student leaves having watched rather than worked.

Families often arrive at this page having already tried the single-hour arrangement and found it wanting. The hour runs, the tutor is competent, the student nods, and the next class test comes back at the same mark. What has usually happened is that the hour has been spent on whichever topic felt most urgent that week, which means it has been spent on explanation rather than on marked practice. Splitting the week into two declared purposes fixes that without adding a third hour. For a family at LA Mer that translates into a timetable question. School finishes between about 2:45pm and 3:30pm across the Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim cluster. The drive home down Jumeirah Beach Road or across Al Wasl Road takes the next thirty to forty-five minutes. Activity programmes in this cluster run from roughly 4pm to 6pm. What remains is two usable evening windows a week if they are claimed early in September, and considerably less if the decision is left until the first report.

The split that works is simple to describe. One evening carries calculation: a set of quantitative questions attempted, marked against the published scheme, and the specific arithmetic failure identified. The other carries mechanism and recall: curly arrows drawn, reaction types sorted, conditions memorised and tested. Keeping them apart means each session has a method, and it means the student is not asked to switch cognitive gear halfway through a tired evening.

The scientific investigation sits outside both. It is 20 per cent of the Chemistry grade, marked across four criteria worth 24 marks in total, with a 3,000-word limit. Chemistry investigations fail more often on method design than on chemistry: a reaction chosen because it looks interesting rather than because its rate can be measured reliably in a school laboratory. That decision needs a dedicated block early in the first year, not a corner of a Tuesday evening in the second.

IB Gram teaches LA Mer families one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, since home visits are offered only in India. For chemistry that format has a specific payoff: mechanism work is drawn on a shared screen and kept, so a nucleophilic substitution worked through in November can be reopened in March rather than remembered.

At a glance

  • Quantitative chemistry and organic chemistry need different kinds of practice
  • Jumeirah cluster activity programmes occupy roughly 4pm to 6pm
  • Two claimed evenings beat one long block for Higher Level
  • The investigation needs its own reserved session in the first year
  • Mechanism diagrams drawn on screen stay available for revision
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

LA Mer students reach Diploma Chemistry by two routes, and the route changes what the first term of tutoring has to cover. These are the programmes behind the chemistry teaching described here.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Chemistry

Organised into Structure topics covering particulate models, bonding and classification, and Reactivity topics covering what drives reactions, how far and how fast they go, and the mechanisms by which they happen. Assessment is Paper 1, with a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, plus Paper 2, with the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. Higher Level adds depth rather than new papers.

Chemistry Higher Level is the standard requirement for medicine and dentistry applications from Dubai schools, which is why demand for Higher Level slots in the Jumeirah cluster runs well ahead of Standard Level. That also means a cohort of students who need the grade for a specific course, and for whom the mechanism half of the syllabus is usually the deciding margin.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

Assessed against four criteria with a strong investigation emphasis. Students arriving in Diploma Chemistry from MYP 5 generally design experiments well and have had limited practice with mole calculations under time pressure, which is the first gap a tutor should close.

For MYP students in this cluster the useful window is the summer between MYP 5 and Year 12. Four or five hours spent on mole arithmetic and formula manipulation before term starts removes the most common reason a confident MYP science student struggles in the first Diploma Chemistry test.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry as the route in

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 and Pearson Edexcel 4CH1 are the usual entry points. Both leave a student fluent in reaction recall and far less practised at the quantitative work Diploma Chemistry front-loads, particularly limiting reagent and percentage yield problems in multi-step form.

A student moving from 0620 Extended into Diploma Chemistry in a Dubai school meets equilibrium constants, enthalpy cycles and pH calculations as genuinely new material inside the first two terms. Claiming the weekly slot from September rather than after the October half term is what keeps that from becoming a grade problem.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the chemistry blocks that generate the most evening hours among LA Mer Diploma students, grouped by which of the two weekly sessions each belongs in.

Moles, formulae and limiting reagents

SL and HL

The arithmetic everything else rests on. Multi-step problems involving limiting reagent, percentage yield and atom economy are where marks disappear quietly, because the chemistry is right and the sequencing is not. Belongs in the calculation evening.

Bonding, structure and intermolecular forces

SL and HL

Lewis structures, shapes, polarity and the forces between molecules. Explanation questions here demand precise language about relative strength, and students lose marks by naming a force without comparing it. Belongs in the recall evening.

Energetics and thermochemistry

SL and HL, with entropy and Gibbs energy at HL

Enthalpy cycles, bond enthalpies and calorimetry at both levels, extended at Higher Level into entropy change and spontaneity. Sign conventions are the reliable trap, and they are fixed by marked practice rather than explanation.

Equilibrium and the equilibrium constant

SL and HL

Qualitative shifts at Standard Level, with calculations involving the equilibrium constant at Higher Level. Students manage the shift questions and stumble on setting up an expression from initial and equilibrium quantities. A calculation-evening topic.

Acids, bases and pH curves

SL and HL, buffers at HL

Strong and weak behaviour, pH arithmetic, titration curves, and buffer calculations at Higher Level. The common failure is treating a weak acid with the strong-acid method. This block alone often justifies the second weekly evening.

Redox and electrochemistry

SL and HL, electrode potentials at HL

Oxidation states, half equations and cells, with standard electrode potentials and quantitative electrolysis at Higher Level. Balancing half equations in acidic and basic conditions is a procedure, and procedures respond well to drilling.

Organic chemistry and functional groups

SL and HL

Homologous series, naming, and the reactions connecting functional groups. Volume of recall rather than conceptual difficulty, which means it rewards frequent short testing far more than long explanation. The recall-evening backbone.

Reaction mechanisms and curly arrows

Mainly HL

Nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and the reasoning behind each pathway. Students who can state a mechanism often cannot draw the arrows to the convention the mark scheme expects, which is a drawing habit and is taught by repetition.

Spectroscopy and structure determination

SL and HL, deeper at HL

Using mass spectra, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance data to deduce a structure. Appears in the data-based section and rewards a systematic reading order, which most students have never been given explicitly.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL, 20 per cent of the grade

Four criteria, 24 marks, a 3,000-word limit. Chemistry investigations usually fail at method design rather than at chemistry, so the reserved early session is about choosing something measurable, not about writing.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns cover almost every LA Mer chemistry booking. All teaching is one-to-one over live video.

The calculation evening

One hour a week devoted to the quantitative half of the course: moles, energetics, equilibrium, pH and electrochemistry. Questions are attempted first, then marked against the published scheme, so the session identifies the arithmetic failure rather than re-explaining the chemistry.

  • Questions attempted before they are discussed
  • Marked against the published criteria
  • Sign conventions and sequencing drilled
  • Written note of the specific failure mode

The recall and mechanism evening

A second weekly hour on organic chemistry, functional groups, bonding language and mechanism drawing. Built on frequent short testing and repeated drawing rather than explanation, because this half of the syllabus is volume of recall rather than conceptual difficulty.

  • Mechanism arrows drawn to mark-scheme convention
  • Functional group reactions tested each session
  • Diagrams kept on screen for later revision
  • Short retrieval tasks between sessions

Reserved investigation sessions

Two longer blocks placed in the first year: one to find a research question whose rate or yield can actually be measured, one to work through data analysis and evaluation. The student does the work throughout; the tutor teaches the criteria and responds to drafts.

  • Booked early, before the second-year workload arrives
  • Method feasibility checked before chemistry is chosen
  • Criteria explained letter by letter with mark values
  • Feedback on the student's own writing only

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in LA Mer

01

The two-evening week, hour by hour

A workable Diploma Chemistry week for a LA Mer student has two claimed slots on separate days, each with a declared purpose. The table below shows the pattern that survives a full academic year in this cluster, built around a school day ending by 3:30pm and an activity programme running to about 6pm.

The important feature is not the hours themselves but the gap between them. Work set on the calculation evening is attempted before the recall evening arrives, which gives the second session something real to mark. A single two-hour block on one night cannot do that, because nothing has been attempted independently in between. This is also why a long weekend session, which looks efficient, tends to produce less than two shorter weekday ones.

The second feature is that neither slot is after 8:30pm. Chemistry calculations collapse under tiredness in a particular way: the student still recognises the question type and still makes arithmetic slips, which is the least useful combination for a tutor to work with. Where a family genuinely cannot find two earlier windows, the honest answer is one well-placed hour rather than two badly placed ones.

Families who claim these slots in September keep them. Activity programmes, sports fixtures and the school's own revision sessions fill the calendar progressively through the year, and by January the available windows in this cluster have usually narrowed to after 7pm. The timetable decision is therefore made best at the start, which is also when the chemistry itself is at its most manageable.

Organic chemistry is a memory problem, and memory problems need a different session

  • Mark schemes specify where a curly arrow starts and where it points
  • Weekly repetition beats occasional explanation for organic recall
  • Appending organic work to a calculation hour means covering, not practising
  • Annotated mechanisms stay available on screen for later revision

Most students who struggle with Diploma Chemistry are not struggling with chemistry. They are struggling with the quantity of organic chemistry that has to be available instantly: which reagent, which conditions, which product, which mechanism, in which direction. That is a retrieval problem, and retrieval problems are not solved by explanation, however good the explanation is.

What works is short, frequent and tested. A student who draws a nucleophilic substitution mechanism once a week for eight weeks can draw it in an exam; a student who has it explained beautifully twice cannot. The curly arrows in particular are a drawing habit with a convention attached, and mark schemes are specific about where an arrow starts and where it points. Students lose marks for arrows that begin on an atom rather than on a bond or a lone pair, which is a correction that takes seconds and has to be made repeatedly before it holds.

This is the strongest argument for keeping organic work in its own weekly slot rather than appending it to a calculation session. Appended, it becomes the last fifteen minutes of a tired hour and gets covered rather than practised. Given its own evening, it becomes a routine, and routines are what produce recall under pressure.

A practical consequence for online teaching: every mechanism drawn in a session is kept. A student revising in the spring can reopen the November session and see their own arrows with the corrections marked, which is materially better than a photograph of a whiteboard that no longer exists.

03

Where the Higher Level extension actually bites

Chemistry Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra chapters bolted on. The additional content clusters in specific places and each cluster has a distinct character, which matters for deciding when a second weekly evening becomes necessary rather than optional.

Three of the extensions are quantitative and arrive together in the second year: buffer and pH calculations, standard electrode potentials, and entropy with Gibbs energy. Each adds a new calculation procedure on top of material the student has already met at Standard Level, so the risk is not misunderstanding but confusion between methods. A student who applies the strong-acid pH method to a weak acid has not misunderstood acids; they have failed to notice which procedure the question calls for.

The other extensions are structural: deeper organic mechanisms, transition metal chemistry and complexes, and more demanding spectroscopy. These add recall volume rather than procedure, which pushes them towards the mechanism evening. Mapping each extension to the right session is a small planning act that makes the difference between two productive hours and two general ones.

A fourth point sits underneath all three. Every one of these extensions assumes fluency with the Standard Level material it builds on, so a student who is still hesitant about setting up an equilibrium expression will experience electrode potentials as two problems rather than one. That is the strongest argument for spending the first Diploma year well: it is the cheapest year, and it is the year that determines how expensive the second one becomes.

The table below sets out the pattern. For most LA Mer families the practical implication is that a single weekly hour carries the first year comfortably and a second hour becomes the right purchase when the pH, electrochemistry and energetics extensions arrive in the same term as the investigation deadline.

04

The chemistry investigation: choose a measurable reaction before choosing an interesting one

The scientific investigation is 20 per cent of the Chemistry grade, assessed against four criteria worth 24 marks between them, within a 3,000-word limit. Chemistry investigations go wrong earlier than physics ones, and they go wrong in a predictable place: the reaction chosen cannot be measured well enough in a school laboratory to produce data worth analysing.

The pattern is familiar to anyone who has marked these. A student picks a reaction that is chemically interesting, discovers that the rate is either too fast to time or too slow to observe, collects five data points with no repeats, and then writes a long evaluation explaining why the data was poor. That evaluation can be well written and still cannot rescue the data analysis criterion, because there is nothing to analyse. The failure happened at the method stage, weeks earlier.

The fix is a reserved session before any chemistry is chosen, spent entirely on feasibility. Can the quantity be measured with the equipment available? Can the range be varied enough to show a trend? Can enough repeats be run in the laboratory time allocated? Is there a reasonable accepted value to compare the result against? A research question that survives those four questions is already most of the way to a strong investigation.

The boundary on help is firm and stated here deliberately. A tutor explains what each criterion rewards, teaches the chemistry involved, shows how uncertainty propagates through the relevant calculation, and gives feedback on a draft the student has written. No part of an investigation is written, redrafted or supplied, and no research question is handed over for adoption. At least one operator in this search sells completed Internal Assessments; submitting purchased work is a malpractice risk carried by the student.

05

What chemistry support costs in Dubai, and why travel changes the evening

Home tutoring is the common search and it deserves a straight answer. In-home one-to-one science tuition in Dubai is available and is quoted at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel included, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table putting the usual range at AED 180 to AED 350. Online qualified subject tutors are published at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors listing IB rates from AED 200 and TutorChase AED 270 for specialist work. Market monthly packages appear at roughly AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Those figures belong to the providers named and were read in October 2026.

For a chemistry student the monthly comparison is unusually revealing, because it maps directly onto the argument of this page. Four two-hour in-home sessions a month is one long block a week; eight shorter online sessions is the two-evening pattern. The market has priced the format that suits the travelling tutor, not the format that suits the subject.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. LA Mer families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with screen-shared past papers, annotated mechanism diagrams and session recordings. The practical gain for a two-evening pattern is that adding a second weekly hour costs an hour, rather than an hour plus two drives.

The pool argument matters here more than in most subjects. Chemistry Higher Level with strong organic mechanism teaching is a narrow specialism, and requiring the person to be within reach of the Jumeirah coast on a specific weekday evening shrinks the field sharply. Removing the distance requirement is what allows the match to be made on whether the tutor has taught the level and marked the criteria.

Verifying a chemistry tutor in Dubai before the first invoice

  • The permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • Introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Applied for via the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services, with two working days to complete
  • No published fine amounts, so treat quoted figures sceptically

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and for a parent this is a short set of questions rather than a research project. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, and it is granted free of charge for two years. There is therefore no cost reason for a working tutor to be without one.

Eligibility is wide: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE lists the service as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with no fees stated and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so any figure quoted at you should be treated with caution.

Two related points are worth knowing. An operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal entity from an individual tutor and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. And in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, a restriction echoed in the MoHRE permit's code of conduct.

The parent's version of all this is two questions. Does the person hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit? Is your child enrolled at the school where that person teaches? Neither question is awkward and neither costs anything to ask.

07

The two Diploma years, and where the chemistry hours are worth most

Chemistry rewards early spending more clearly than most Diploma subjects, because the quantitative foundation laid in the first year is what the second year's extensions are built on. A student who is fluent with moles, enthalpy cycles and equilibrium expressions by the end of Year 12 finds buffers and electrode potentials to be new procedures. A student who is not finds them to be new procedures resting on shaky arithmetic, which is a different and much more expensive problem.

The first year therefore wants one well-placed weekly hour and the two reserved investigation blocks. That is a modest commitment and it is the one that reduces total spend across the course. The second year wants two weekly hours through the term when the Higher Level extensions, the investigation deadline and the mock window overlap, which in most Dubai schools is the same term.

After the mocks, the marked script is the only honest diagnostic a family gets, and it should be converted into a topic list with mark values attached rather than read as a grade. The weeks following the mocks are the highest-value paid hours of the entire course. The final stretch should then taper deliberately: fewer tutored hours, more timed independent practice, because at that point recall and speed set through the student's own repetition.

On session dates, one caution applies across this set of pages. No IB exam or results date is published here, because those dates have not been verified from the IB directly; confirm them with the school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org. For the IGCSE chemistry many of these students sat first, UAE candidates take Cambridge in the June and November series, as the February/March series is offered to India only, while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November.

Where we tutor

LA Mer and the communities on the same timetable

The two-evening pattern described here is driven by school finish times and activity programmes, which are near-identical along the Jumeirah coast strip. These are the surrounding communities where the same arrangement applies.

LA Mer

Beachfront apartments and townhouses off Jumeirah Beach Road. The single beach-road exit at the end of the school day means the first usable evening slot is rarely before 4:45pm.

Jumeirah 1

Villa streets immediately inland. Shorter drives home mean families here can sometimes claim both a late-afternoon and an evening slot in the same week.

Pearl Jumeira

A single causeway in and out, so the afternoon exit is one queue. Chemistry sessions here almost always settle after 6:30pm, once the activity run is finished.

City Walk

Dense low-rise apartments across Al Wasl Road. Lift and basement parking add minutes at both ends of every trip, which is why the evening slot is the dependable one.

Al Wasl

The through-corridor for most of this cluster's school traffic. Crossing it twice in an afternoon costs close to an hour, which is exactly the hour a chemistry session competes for.

Jumeirah 2

Large villa plots with many Diploma families. Higher Level chemistry demand concentrates here between 6:30pm and 8pm, and the earlier slots go first in September.

Jumeirah 3

Towards Umm Suqeim, with longer internal drives and later arrivals. Online delivery is what makes a 4:45pm start possible from this stretch at all.

Umm Suqeim

Several large schools with staggered finishes and the heaviest afternoon congestion in the cluster. Planning starts from the activity calendar rather than the school bell.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the week before the subject detail

We ask first for school finish time, activity days and the hours the student can actually think. Two claimed evenings in September hold for the year; slots negotiated in January are after 7pm and fragile. The timetable decision comes before the tutor match.

  2. 02

    Take the free trial lesson

A full session at no charge, taught rather than pitched, with the student. The tutor looks at a recent marked test and begins teaching. One trial lesson per student, before any booking; if the match is wrong, say so and nothing is owed.

  3. 03

    Split calculation from recall

One evening is set aside for moles, energetics, equilibrium, pH and electrochemistry, with questions attempted before they are discussed. The other is organic chemistry, bonding language and mechanism drawing, built on short frequent testing. Each session has a declared purpose.

  4. 04

Reserve the investigation blocks in the first year

Two longer sessions are booked early: one spent on whether the chosen reaction can actually be measured in a school laboratory, one on data analysis and evaluation. The student writes everything; the tutor teaches the criteria and responds to drafts.

  5. 05

    Convert the mock, then reduce

The marked mock script becomes a topic list with mark values attached, and the following weeks are the most valuable paid hours of the course. In the final stretch the hours taper on purpose, so recall and speed set through the student's own timed practice.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The week is treated as the real constraint

In a cluster where school ends by 3:30pm and activities run to 6pm, the binding problem is finding two usable evenings, not finding a chemistry graduate. Timetable comes first in every conversation, which is why the arrangement is still standing in March.

Calculation and recall kept apart

Quantitative chemistry needs attempted questions marked against a scheme. Organic chemistry needs frequent short testing and repeated drawing. Mixing both into one hour produces a session that covers material rather than one that changes anything.

Mechanisms kept, not photographed

Curly arrows are drawn on a shared screen with corrections marked, and the record stays. A student revising in spring can reopen their own November mechanism rather than trying to recall what the whiteboard said.

A second hour costs an hour

Because lessons are one-to-one over live video, adding the second weekly evening in the term when the Higher Level extensions land costs an hour of time and nothing in travel. That is what makes the two-evening pattern affordable in practice.

Firm limits on the investigation

A tutor teaches the four criteria, explains the chemistry, shows how uncertainty propagates, and gives feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing is written or supplied, and no research question is handed over to be adopted.

Rates quoted with their sources, and no promises

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider that published it and dated. No grade or outcome is guaranteed, because none can be. A free trial lesson comes first, and the honest advice is sometimes to buy fewer hours.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in LA Mer: your questions answered

Why does IB Chemistry need two evenings a week when other subjects manage with one?+

Because the course has two halves that need different practice. Moles, energetics, equilibrium, pH and electrochemistry are procedures, learned by attempting questions and having them marked against a scheme. Organic chemistry and mechanisms are retrieval, learned by frequent short testing and repeated drawing. An hour that tries to serve both ends up covering material rather than changing anything. Two separate evenings also create a gap in which work can be attempted unaided, which is what gives the second session something real to mark.

Which two evenings work best for a Diploma chemistry student on the Jumeirah coast?+

Early week and later week, both around 6:45pm, with a clear day between them. School in this cluster ends between 2:45pm and 3:30pm and activity programmes run to roughly 6pm, so the 6:45pm window is the one that survives a full year. Neither slot should sit after 8:30pm: tired students still recognise question types and still make arithmetic slips, which is the least useful combination to work with. Claim both slots in September, because by January the available windows have narrowed considerably.

What makes organic chemistry so hard for Dubai Diploma students?+

Volume rather than difficulty. A student needs instant access to which reagent, which conditions, which product and which mechanism, in both directions, across a long list of functional groups. That is a retrieval problem, and retrieval does not improve through explanation however clear it is. It improves through weekly repetition under light time pressure. Drawing a nucleophilic substitution once a week for eight weeks produces recall in an exam; having it explained twice does not, no matter how well the explanation lands.

Why do students lose marks on curly arrows they thought were correct?+

Because mark schemes are specific about where an arrow begins and where it points. An arrow must start from a bond or a lone pair rather than from an atom, and it must point to the place where the new bond forms. Students who understand the mechanism perfectly still lose these marks through drawing habit. The correction takes seconds to make and has to be made repeatedly across weeks before it holds, which is exactly why mechanism work belongs in its own recurring slot.

When does a LA Mer family actually need to add the second chemistry hour?+

Usually in the second year, in the term when the Higher Level extensions arrive together. Buffers and weak acid pH, standard electrode potentials, and entropy with Gibbs energy are three new calculation procedures landing on top of Standard Level material, and they tend to coincide with the investigation deadline and the mock window. One well-placed hour carries the first year comfortably for most students. Planning for the second hour in September costs the same as adding it in a hurry and works considerably better.

What goes wrong most often in an IB Chemistry investigation?+

The reaction chosen cannot be measured well enough in a school laboratory. A student picks something chemically interesting, finds the rate too fast to time or too slow to observe, collects a handful of points with no repeats, then writes a long evaluation explaining the poor data. That evaluation can be well written and still cannot rescue the data analysis criterion, because there is nothing to analyse. The failure happened at method design, weeks earlier, which is why feasibility deserves its own session first.

How should a research question be tested before the chemistry is chosen?+

With four questions. Can the quantity be measured using equipment actually available? Can the independent variable be varied across a wide enough range to reveal a trend? Can enough repeats be run inside the laboratory time the school allocates? Is there a reasonable accepted value to compare the result against? A research question that survives all four is most of the way to a strong investigation. One that fails any of them will produce data that no amount of careful writing can recover.

Does IB Gram send a chemistry tutor to homes in LA Mer or Jumeirah?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, because in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. LA Mer families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with screen-shared past papers, annotated mechanism diagrams and session recordings. For the two-evening pattern this page recommends, the format matters practically: adding a second weekly hour costs an hour, rather than an hour plus two drives across Al Wasl Road at the end of the school day.

Is a two-hour chemistry block once a week better value than two single hours?+

Rarely, and the market prices it that way for travel reasons rather than teaching ones. Four two-hour in-home sessions a month are commonly quoted at AED 1,599 to AED 1,799, against roughly AED 799 for eight shorter online sessions. The longer block cannot create a gap in which the student attempts work unaided, so the second half of it becomes supervised practice rather than marked practice. Attention on quantitative chemistry also degrades sharply well before 120 minutes have passed.

What does a Higher Level chemistry tutor cost in the Dubai market?+

Published rates for qualified online subject tutors run AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB rates from AED 200 and TutorChase publishing AED 270 for specialist work. In-home visits including travel are quoted at AED 180 to AED 500, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table putting the usual range at AED 180 to AED 350. Premium examiner-branded providers reach AED 650, with BartyED at that figure. Those are market numbers from the named providers, read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

My child needs Chemistry HL for medicine. Does that change the tutoring plan?+

It changes the margin rather than the method. Students applying for medicine or dentistry from Dubai schools generally need Chemistry at Higher Level, and for most of them the deciding marks sit in the mechanism and recall half of the syllabus rather than in the calculations, which tend to be the stronger side for this group. That argues for protecting the organic evening rather than adding more calculation hours. No tutor can promise a grade or an admission outcome, and nobody honest will.

How is laboratory work handled if chemistry lessons are online?+

The hands-on apparatus work happens at school, which is where it belongs and where the investigation data is collected. What a tutor contributes is the analysis: processing the results, handling uncertainty through the specific calculation involved, deciding what the data supports, and writing an evaluation that proposes concrete improvements. Those are the parts where marks are actually lost, and they are done better on a shared screen than on paper, because the processed data and the working stay available afterwards.

Can a chemistry tutor look at my child's investigation draft?+

Yes, as feedback on work the student has already written. A tutor explains what each of the four criteria rewards, teaches the chemistry involved, shows how uncertainty propagates through the relevant calculation, and comments on a draft. A tutor does not write, redraft or supply any part of it, and will not hand over a research question for adoption. At least one operator in this search sells completed Internal Assessments; submitting purchased work is a malpractice risk carried by the student alone.

How do I check a Dubai chemistry tutor is permitted to teach privately?+

Ask two questions. First, do they hold the MoHRE private tutor work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023? It is granted free of charge for two years, so cost is never a reason to lack one, and eligibility covers school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Second, is your child enrolled at the school where that person teaches, since the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school?

Claim two evenings in September, then match the tutor to them

The decision that shapes a Diploma Chemistry year for a LA Mer family is made on a calendar rather than on a rate card. Two protected evenings, a day apart, each with a declared purpose, will outperform any single longer session and will still be standing in March. Add two reserved blocks in the first year for the investigation, and spend them on whether the chosen reaction can actually be measured. Take the free trial lesson, which is a taught session rather than a sales call, and ask which half of the syllabus each hour is for. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
