IB Home Tutor in LA Mer

Parents who search for an IB home tutor in La Mer are usually asking one question: is there anybody close by who actually knows this syllabus? This page answers it with arithmetic rather than reassurance. La Mer sits on the Jumeirah 1 coast, a short run from Al Wasl, Al Safa and City Walk, and the pool of Diploma-trained subject teachers inside that radius is small. IB Gram works around that by teaching online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in LA Mer

Is there anyone near La Mer who really knows the IB?

Start with the honest version. La Mer is a low-rise beachfront district on the Jumeirah 1 shoreline, with a residential population measured in hundreds of households rather than thousands. Draw a twenty-minute driving radius around it and you capture Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3, Al Wasl, Al Safa, Umm Suqeim, City Walk and Pearl Jumeira. That is a wealthy, school-dense slice of Dubai. It is still a small catchment when the thing you need is a teacher who has marked a Physics HL paper or supervised a Mathematics exploration to the current criteria.

The reason is simple counting. International Baccalaureate programmes account for roughly 7 per cent of enrolment across Dubai's 227 private schools, against 37 per cent on UK curricula and 26 per cent on Indian ones, in KHDA's 2024-25 figures. Every one of those IB schools employs a handful of Diploma teachers per subject. Of those teachers, the ones free to tutor in the evening are fewer still, and Abu Dhabi's ADEK ethics rules and the MoHRE permit code of conduct both bar a teacher from taking paid work with students enrolled at their own school. A local search therefore returns agencies, generalists and university students far more often than it returns a subject specialist.

So when a parent in La Mer types the phrase into Google and gets a page promising a tutor at a Jumeirah address within forty-eight hours, the question worth asking is which subject, at which level, and who. A tutor who covers Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Economics across MYP and DP is a tutor who covers none of them to examiner depth. The Diploma is six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and an internal assessment in almost every course. Each of those has its own criteria and its own common failure modes.

IB Gram's answer is to stop treating the twenty-minute radius as the selection pool. Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time and to your child's own school deadlines. That decouples the match from geography: a La Mer household can work with a Chemistry HL teacher who has supervised dozens of explorations, rather than with whoever happens to live two streets away and is willing to drive.

What follows is the detail a local search does not give you. How to test a tutor's syllabus knowledge in a single conversation. What the Dubai market actually charges, by tier, with each figure attributed. What the travel premium on a home visit is really buying. Which schools the Jumeirah coast feeds and what their timetables do to a 4pm start. What the permit rules say about the person teaching your child. And where the line sits between legitimate coursework teaching and academic malpractice.

At a glance

  • La Mer's own residential footprint is small; the realistic catchment is the wider Jumeirah 1 to Umm Suqeim strip
  • IB programmes carry about 7 per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment, so subject specialists are thinly spread
  • Abu Dhabi ethics rules and the MoHRE permit code both bar teaching your own school's students for a fee
  • IB Gram teaches online, one-to-one; home visits are an India-only service
  • Match is by subject and level, so Higher Level requests are not filled by a generalist
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

La Mer sits inside a cluster of IB continuum and dual-curriculum schools, so a family here may be dealing with any of three programmes at once: a younger child on PYP inquiry units, a middle child on MYP criteria, and a Diploma candidate counting down to the May session.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Six transdisciplinary themes, no formal external examination, and an exhibition in the final year. Reports describe approaches to learning rather than percentages, which is why parents often cannot tell whether a child is behind. Tutoring at this stage is diagnostic: number fluency, reading stamina, and the writing conventions a MYP teacher will assume are already in place.

In Dubai, PYP runs alongside the KHDA mandatory subjects, so a Year 4 child in a Jumeirah school is also studying Arabic, Islamic Education where applicable, and Social Studies. Those lessons are built on a 40-minute unit and taught in separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, which is often where a La Mer family first meets a language gap they did not expect.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked 0-8, converted to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries. The personal project lands in the final year. Students who have never had the criteria explained to them tend to write good content that scores badly, because criterion wording rewards specific moves and penalises their absence.

Several schools on the Jumeirah coast run MYP to Year 11 and then split into Diploma or A Level, while others switch to IGCSE at Year 10. A La Mer parent choosing between those routes is choosing between criterion-referenced internal assessment and terminal written papers, and the two demand different study habits from about Year 8 onward.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Marked out of 45. Internal assessment typically carries 20 to 25 per cent of a subject grade and is submitted long before the written papers, so the pressure peaks in DP1 summer and DP2 autumn rather than in the exam term.

UAE candidates sit the May session, which is the one Dubai schools timetable around. The November session exists as a resit and relocation route. Because the IB does not publish its calendar in a form we can verify automatically, treat your school's IB coordinator as the authority on every internal and upload deadline for your child's cohort.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Two or more DP courses combined with a career-related study, a reflective project, personal and professional skills, service learning and language development. Fewer Dubai schools offer it than offer the Diploma, so a family considering it usually needs help understanding how universities read the transcript.

For a Dubai student, the practical question with CP is Ministry of Education equivalency, which is assessed on the certificate presented rather than on the programme's name. Verify the requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation channel before committing, because no IB points threshold has been published in a form worth repeating here.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma and MYP courses La Mer and wider Jumeirah 1 families ask for most. Each note says what the course actually assesses and where marks go missing, because that is what determines how many hours of support a student needs.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic fluency, with Paper 3 at Higher Level rewarding extended unseen problem-solving. Marks are lost in method communication rather than arithmetic: students who jump to an answer forfeit the working marks that make up most of a long question.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-assisted work. The graphic display calculator is assumed, not optional, and students who never learned its regression and distribution functions lose straightforward marks. HL adds matrices, graph theory and a heavier statistical load.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics, fields, thermodynamics and the option topics, with multiple-choice, structured and data-analysis papers. Uncertainty handling and graph linearisation decide the data paper, and these are skills a school rarely has time to drill between other content.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Stoichiometry, energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. Organic reaction pathways and the reasoning behind equilibrium shifts are the standard pressure points, and the exploration needs a measurable, controllable variable chosen months before the write-up.

Biology

HL and SL

Cell biology through to physiology and ecology, assessed heavily on command terms. Students who answer 'explain' questions as 'describe' questions cap themselves early, and statistical treatment of data in the exploration is where most marks are recoverable.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, with three commentaries drawn from published news articles. Diagram accuracy and explicit evaluation carry the paper; HL adds policy calculation questions that reward practised arithmetic.

Business Management

HL and SL

Organisational structure, finance, marketing and operations, with a research project at Higher Level based on a real organisation. Tools applied mechanically score poorly; the marks sit in applying one framework to the specific firm in the case.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Non-literary and literary texts, with a Paper 1 guided analysis, a Paper 2 comparative essay and the individual oral on a global issue. Students lose marks by summarising rather than analysing how meaning is constructed.

Computer Science

HL and SL

System fundamentals, computational thinking and a solution developed for a real client. The internal assessment stalls when the client and success criteria are vague, so the first support sessions are usually about scoping rather than code.

Arabic B and Arabic ab initio

HL, SL and ab initio

Receptive, productive and interactive skills on prescribed themes. For Dubai students this sits alongside the KHDA mandatory Arabic lessons, which follow Ministry content and cannot be supplemented with different material without prior ministry permission.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects with commentaries and a prescribed-title essay. Marks come from sustained argument about knowledge claims, not from examples; students who collect anecdotes without a thesis plateau in the middle band.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent research piece in a chosen subject, supervised in school and assessed against five criteria. The research question is the whole game: too broad and the essay describes, too narrow and the evidence runs out.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every request from this part of Dubai. All three are delivered online, one-to-one or in a small group, over live video. None of them involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address.

Weekly one-to-one by subject

A fixed slot with one tutor for one subject, holding the same hour each week through the term. This is the format that works for a student who is passing but not where they want to be, because it tracks the school's own sequence and keeps the exploration or commentary moving rather than letting it pile up.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, same tutor, same slot each week
  • Session plan follows your child's school scheme of work
  • Written note after each lesson naming what was covered and what is set
  • Rescheduling by message up to a few hours before the slot

Intensive block before a mock or a session

A compressed run of sessions aimed at a specific paper, usually booked four to eight weeks out from mocks or from the May session. Content coverage takes second place to paper technique: timing, command terms, mark allocation and the specific question types that have been costing marks.

  • Two or three sessions a week for a defined number of weeks
  • Built around past-paper technique using the school's own materials
  • Diagnostic first session to pick the two or three topics worth the time
  • Ends when the exam does, with no rolling commitment

Coursework supervision support

Structured sessions on an internal assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge task, run as teaching and feedback on the student's own drafting. The tutor explains the criteria, asks the questions a supervisor would ask, and reviews what the student has produced. No tutor writes any part of the submission.

  • Criterion-by-criterion explanation before any drafting starts
  • Research-question and variable scoping in the first session
  • Feedback on the student's own text, never rewriting of it
  • Timeline mapped back from the school's internal deadline

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in LA Mer

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in LA Mer

01

What 'IB home tutor in La Mer' returns, and what it leaves out

  • Area claims on tutoring pages describe dispatch intent, not tutor residence
  • Three of the researched competitor pages publish no hourly rate at all
  • Removing the distance filter changes the shortlist from availability to expertise
  • Ask for the tutor's subject and level before you ask about the postcode

Search that phrase from a La Mer address and you get three kinds of result. First, agency landing pages that name the neighbourhood in a heading and then describe a service identical to the one they describe for forty other neighbourhoods. Second, classified listings from individuals, most of whom teach a broad spread of subjects and levels. Third, tuition centres several kilometres inland that would require a drive each way. None of those results tells you the one thing that matters, which is whether a named person who knows your child's specific course at your child's specific level is available at a time your child can actually work.

That omission is not an accident. Proximity is the cheapest thing a tutoring page can claim and the hardest for a parent to verify. A page can say it serves La Mer without a single tutor living within ten kilometres, because the promise is about dispatch rather than residence. Of the competitor pages read in October 2026 for this market, three published no hourly figure at all, and the one page with a published rate contradicted its own structured data. Neighbourhood claims in that environment are worth very little.

The useful move is to invert the question. Instead of asking who is nearby, ask what the shortlist looks like when distance is removed. For a Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches Higher Level student at a Jumeirah school, the relevant pool is every teacher who has taught that course to examination, not every teacher who could reach Jumeirah 1 by 5pm. Those are very different lists, and only one of them is likely to contain somebody who can explain why a Paper 3 investigation question is structured the way it is.

IB Gram's position on the phrase is therefore plain. We target it because it is what parents type. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India. What a La Mer family gets instead is a subject specialist on live video, in a fixed weekly slot, with the travel time returned to the student.

02

The arithmetic of a local IB tutor pool around Jumeirah 1

Work the numbers that KHDA publishes and the shape of the problem becomes clear. Dubai had 387,441 private-school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, taught across 17 different curricula. International Baccalaureate programmes held about 7 per cent of that enrolment. UK curricula held 37 per cent, Indian 26 per cent and US 14 per cent. The IB share is real but minority, and it is distributed across schools spread from Al Barsha to Nad Al Sheba rather than concentrated on the Jumeirah coast.

Now apply that to a single course. A school running the Diploma typically staffs each subject with two or three teachers, one of whom may be the coordinator with a reduced teaching load. For a less-populated Higher Level course, the whole emirate's teaching body for that course is small enough to fit in a seminar room. The subset available on a weekday evening, not barred by their employer's ethics policy from tutoring their own students, and living close enough to Jumeirah 1 to make a home visit viable, is smaller again.

This is why the travel-based model quietly substitutes availability for expertise. If the brief is 'Physics Higher Level, Thursday 5pm, within twenty minutes of La Mer', something has to give, and in practice what gives is the subject depth. The family ends up with a capable graduate who knows physics but has never read the current assessment criteria, or with a teacher stretched across four courses. Both can help a struggling student with basics. Neither reliably moves a 5 to a 7, because that movement depends on knowing exactly what the mark scheme rewards.

The table below sets out the realistic coverage position by course type for this part of Dubai, and what we do when a specialist is not free. Disclosing the fallback is deliberate: no competitor page read for this market admits that a coverage limit exists.

Six questions that test whether a tutor knows your child's syllabus

  • What is the internal assessment worth here, and when is the school deadline?
  • Which paper carries the data or extended-response load, and how long is it?
  • What was the command term in the last mark my child lost?
  • Which two topics in this course cause the most avoidable errors?
  • What may a tutor do with a draft under IB academic-honesty rules?
  • What would session one cover, and what should change in four weeks?

You do not need to be an IB teacher to tell a specialist from a generalist. You need six questions, asked in one conversation, and the confidence to end the conversation if the answers are vague. Every one of these has a concrete correct answer that a teacher of the course gives immediately and that somebody who has only read a textbook cannot fake.

Ask what the internal assessment in this subject is worth as a percentage of the final grade, and when the school's internal deadline usually falls relative to the written papers. Ask which paper carries the data-analysis or extended-response load and how long it runs. Ask what the command term in the student's last lost mark was asking for, and how the answer should have been structured. Ask which two topics in this course produce the most avoidable errors and why. Ask what a tutor is permitted to do with a draft under academic-honesty rules. Ask what the first session would cover and what evidence would show in four weeks.

The answers tell you three things. Whether the person has taught the course to examination, because assessment weightings and deadline rhythms are not memorable unless you have lived them. Whether they diagnose or deliver, because a teacher who asks about the last lost mark is reading the student rather than performing a lesson plan. And whether they understand the honesty boundary, which matters enormously once an exploration or an Extended Essay is in play, since a breach is the student's problem to carry, not the tutor's.

Run this test on anyone, including us. It is the fastest way to turn a proximity search into a competence check, and it costs one phone call.

What Dubai families pay, and what the travel premium buys

Published rates for this market were read from providers' own pages in October 2026. At the bottom of the market, online sessions with university students or early-career tutors are advertised from AED 33 to 65 an hour by platform providers, with the broader budget band running to about AED 150. A qualified subject tutor working online sits between AED 150 and 300, with one agency listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tutors are quoted from AED 200 to 450 and above, with one UK-based agency listing AED 270. Premium named or examiner-badged tutors reach AED 500 to 650 and beyond.

In-home one-to-one visits, with travel included, are quoted between AED 180 and 500 an hour, with a cost comparison service putting the common band at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors reaching AED 500. Monthly packaging follows the same split: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, against AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. For a weekly one-hour habit, the same source estimates AED 240 to 600 a month at budget level, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support.

Read those two sets of numbers together and the travel premium is roughly AED 60 to 150 an hour. It is worth asking what that buys. It does not buy more teaching minutes, because the hour is the hour. It buys physical presence, which genuinely helps a younger child who will not sit still on a screen, and it buys the parent the ability to overhear the lesson. It costs the tutor forty to eighty minutes of unpaid driving per session, which is precisely why the travelling pool skews towards whoever lives nearby rather than whoever knows the course.

None of these figures is IB Gram's price list. They are the market, cited so a La Mer family can judge any quote they are given, including ours, against something external. For our own rates, the free trial lesson and the consultation that follows are the right place to ask.

Online one-to-one against a tutor in the room, judged on this neighbourhood

The fair comparison is not online versus in-person in the abstract. It is online versus the in-person option actually available to a household on the Jumeirah 1 coast, at the time of day a school student can work, for the specific course in question. Framed that way, the trade-offs are concrete.

A tutor arriving in the room brings presence and removes the screen. For a Year 5 child who drifts, that is decisive. It also brings a hard scheduling floor: the tutor must leave somewhere else, cross Jumeirah Beach Road or Al Wasl in afternoon traffic, and arrive before the session can begin. A cancellation two hours out is common because one delayed journey collapses the evening. And the subject pool shrinks to people who will accept that drive for that fee.

Online one-to-one over live video removes the drive from both sides. A 4.15pm slot is genuinely 4.15pm. The tutor is selected for the course rather than the commute, so a Chemistry Higher Level student gets a Chemistry Higher Level teacher. Screen sharing puts a past paper, a mark scheme reference and the student's own exploration draft side by side, which is awkward on a dining table. Lessons can be recorded for the student's own revision, and a parent can read a written note afterwards instead of hovering. Against that, it asks more of the student's self-regulation, and it needs a quiet room with a stable connection.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; that part of our service exists only in India. The comparison below is how we would put the case to a parent who wanted a tutor in the room, and it is also how we would advise them to interrogate any quote they receive.

Is the person teaching your child permitted to tutor in the UAE?

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and runs for two years
  • Eligibility extends to school teachers, employees, students and the unemployed
  • No penalty amounts are published; treat any quoted fine as unverified
  • Your child's own schoolteacher tutoring them for a fee breaches the code of conduct

Private tutoring in the UAE is a permitted activity with a permit attached to it. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the private tuition work permit, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered at government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. The service is listed as 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days.

Individuals offering private tutoring without that permit are, in the federal government's own wording, subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any specific figure quoted to you about penalties should be treated as unverified. What matters for a parent is the simpler point: the permit exists, it is free, and there is no good reason for a working tutor not to hold one.

A second rule sits on top of it. A code of conduct attached to the permit bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and Abu Dhabi's ADEK has set professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff along the same lines. So a parent who arranges for their child's own classroom teacher to tutor them privately for a fee is pushing that teacher into a position their employer and the permit both prohibit. It feels like the obvious shortcut. It is the one arrangement to avoid.

A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai is a separate matter again: that requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no UAE centre or office, and makes no claim of approval, accreditation or endorsement from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Any page telling you otherwise about itself is worth a second look.

07

Where the line sits on an exploration, an Extended Essay or a TOK task

  • Legitimate: criteria explanation, question scoping, method teaching, feedback on the student's own text
  • Not legitimate: drafting, rewriting, supplying model answers to adapt, or producing the submission
  • Breaches are assessed against the candidate, so the student carries the consequence
  • Start coursework sessions in the scoping weeks, not the fortnight before the deadline

This is the part of the market that carries real risk for the student rather than for the provider. Internal assessment work in the Diploma must be the student's own, authenticated by a supervising teacher at the school. A breach is handled as malpractice and the consequences land on the candidate's diploma, not on whoever helped.

So the boundary is worth stating precisely. A tutor may explain what each assessment criterion asks for and how marks are distributed across the criteria. A tutor may discuss whether a research question is answerable with the evidence available, or whether a chosen independent variable can actually be controlled in a school laboratory. A tutor may read what a student has written and say which criterion is underserved and why. A tutor may teach the statistical method, the referencing convention or the paragraph structure the student then applies themselves.

A tutor may not write any part of the submission. No tutor should draft the Extended Essay introduction, supply a worked exploration for a student to adapt, rewrite a TOK commentary into their own prose, or produce the Personal Project write-up. One provider in this market advertises completed internal assessments for sale at a four-figure AED price. That is not a cheaper version of tutoring; it is the thing that gets a diploma withdrawn. We will not supply it and will say so plainly to any family who asks.

The practical consequence is that coursework support has to start earlier than most families expect. If the only legitimate help is teaching and feedback on the student's own work, then there must be work to give feedback on, which means sessions in the scoping and first-draft weeks rather than the fortnight before the deadline. For a DP1 student in La Mer, that normally means beginning in the spring term rather than the autumn of DP2.

08

The Diploma year counted backwards, and the IGCSE sessions around it

Most families plan forwards from today and run out of time. The useful exercise is to count backwards from the session, because every fixed date in the Diploma sits months before the written papers rather than next to them. UAE candidates sit the May session; the November session exists as a resit and relocation route. Because the IB's own calendar cannot be verified automatically for this page, every specific internal, upload and results date for your child's cohort should come from the school's IB coordinator, who holds the version that applies to them.

What can be stated with sources is the Cambridge and Pearson position, and it matters because most Jumeirah IB students sat IGCSEs first or have siblings sitting them now. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge is explicit that the correct zone timetable must be used and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, while November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

Two scheduling realities in Dubai sit on top of the official calendar. Ramadan shortens the school day and shifts family routines, so revision that assumes a normal evening will not survive it; moving sessions to a post-iftar slot is routine and should be planned rather than improvised. And the long summer break falls directly between DP1 and DP2, which is the single best window for exploration and Extended Essay work because it is the only period with no competing school deadlines.

Always link to the live official timetable rather than relying on a restated date. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and they can be revised, which is exactly why a page like this one names months and sources rather than printing a future calendar.

KHDA, the mandatory UAE subjects and the week they actually leave you

KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, and it publishes an inspection report for each school on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. That report is the document to read before you read anyone's marketing, including a school's own. Across the UAE the picture is federated: ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge does the same there, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. In Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah the authority also approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods.

For a La Mer family the KHDA rule with the biggest timetable consequence is the mandatory-subject requirement. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run in every Dubai private school regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with the current requirements due to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for the two groups are prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, lesson length may vary provided the weekly total is met, and at least 25 minutes is advised for any mandatory-subject lesson.

Two things follow. The first is practical: those lessons occupy real timetable space, so an IB Diploma student in Dubai is carrying a slightly fuller week than the programme alone suggests, and a tutoring plan that ignores it over-books the evenings. The second is a constraint on what tutoring can legitimately do. For the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, so support there has to be skills work on the school's own material rather than an alternative syllabus. Schools are also required to ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects, which is a credential a parent can ask about directly.

One more piece of context for budgeting. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For the same intake, seven new private schools, four on UK curricula and three on the International Baccalaureate, add 16,846 places; six schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. A flat fee year and more IB places are both reasons to spend the tutoring budget on depth rather than on travel.

Ministry of Education equivalency, and what IB families should verify

  • British track: five GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, Arabic and Islamic Education excluded
  • Plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E on the same track
  • American track: IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 reading and writing; SAT Math 450
  • IB points threshold: verify on moe.gov.ae; no figure is published here
  • Equivalency is a ministry process; no tutoring provider performs or guarantees it

Equivalency is the process that converts a foreign school certificate into something UAE authorities and universities can read. It is handled by the Ministry of Education and the emirate attestation channels, and it is not something a tutoring provider performs, arranges or guarantees. What a provider can usefully do is tell you the sourced parts and point you at the authority for the rest.

For the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic Education are not counted among the five required subjects. That last detail matters: one page ranking in this market tells UAE parents they need six IGCSE subjects, which does not match the published rule. For the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the academic IELTS, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics by at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the International Baccalaureate, no points threshold has been read on a ministry source for this page, so none is published here. Any figure you see quoted for IB equivalency should be checked against moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority before you plan around it. Tutoring is not required for equivalency, for university admission or for school progression, and any provider implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency around a regulatory process.

The practical reading for a La Mer household is about subject choice in Year 11 and DP1. A student dropping to five Diploma subjects, or choosing a Mathematics route that a target university does not accept, creates a problem that no amount of later tutoring fixes. That conversation belongs with the school's counsellor and with the ministry's own published requirements, early, and a tutor's job is to make sure the chosen subjects are actually survivable at the chosen level.

Where we tutor

Where La Mer families actually live and study

La Mer itself is a small residential footprint attached to a beachfront destination district. In practice the families searching this phrase live across the Jumeirah 1 to Umm Suqeim strip and the inland communities behind it, and their school runs are what determine lesson times.

La Mer and Jumeirah 1

Low-rise coastal housing with a short run onto Jumeirah Beach Road. Afternoon traffic from the Al Wasl junction is the limiting factor on anything booked before 5pm during term.

Pearl Jumeira

A reclaimed island immediately west of La Mer with villa and apartment stock. Residents share the same school routes, so a sibling pair split across two schools often needs two different session slots.

City Walk and Al Wasl

Apartment-heavy and closer to Sheikh Zayed Road, which makes a 4.30pm start realistic more often than it is on the coast. Several MYP and IGCSE cohorts here sit mock papers in the same fortnight.

Al Safa and Al Manara

Villa communities feeding a cluster of long-established British and IB schools. School days end between 2.15pm and 3.15pm depending on year group, so the first usable online slot is usually 4pm.

Jumeirah 2 and Jumeirah 3

Older villa plots with a high proportion of students at nearby Jumeirah schools. Families here commonly run two subjects in parallel across the DP1 summer, which shapes how hours are blocked.

Umm Suqeim

Stretches from the beach to Al Barsha-side arterials and feeds several IB continuum and British schools. Friday timetables finish early, which is why Friday evening slots fill first in this part of Dubai.

Al Jafiliya and Port Rashid side

A short drive east of La Mer, closer to the Dubai Canal crossings. Parents commuting into Deira or Bur Dubai often prefer a 7pm slot so one of them can be present for the first ten minutes.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Technically outside the Jumeirah coast but on the same school routes. Students here frequently attend schools in Al Barsha or Al Quoz, so their day ends later and sessions push towards 6pm.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in LA Mer

Jumeirah and Al Safa

The closest school cluster to La Mer, mixing long-established British schools with IB continuum provision. Students we support from this cluster most often ask for Diploma sciences and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School (Jumeirah)
  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School
  • GEMS Jumeirah Primary School
  • Jumeirah College
  • Latifa School for Girls
  • Horizon English School Dubai

Umm Suqeim and Al Sufouh

A second ring of schools reachable from La Mer along Jumeirah Beach Road and Al Thanya Street. Several run an IB Diploma alongside or instead of A Levels, so the Year 11 choice conversation is a live one in these households.

  • Raffles World Academy
  • Kings' School Dubai
  • Dubai College
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud
  • Dubai Japanese School

Al Barsha and Al Quoz

Further inland but on the routes many Jumeirah 1 families already drive. This cluster carries a large share of Dubai's IB Diploma cohorts, which is why the subject requests from here skew towards Higher Level sciences and Economics.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • The English College Dubai
  • Safa British School

Schools are named here as context for the neighbourhood's curriculum mix. IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school or school group, and inspection ratings should be read from KHDA's own published report for each school.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the course, the level and the last lost mark

A ten-minute call covering the subject, the level, the school and the most recent piece of work that went badly. The last lost mark is more diagnostic than a grade average, because it names the specific skill gap rather than describing its symptom.

  2. 02

We shortlist on syllabus, not on distance

Matching runs on who has taught that course to examination, with scheduling second and geography nowhere. If the La Mer slot you want cannot be filled by a specialist, we tell you that and offer the alternative rather than substituting a generalist quietly.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, no card held

One full session with the proposed tutor before any payment, with no card stored and no obligation to continue. Treat it as an interview: ask the six syllabus questions from earlier on this page and judge the answers.

  4. 04

Fix the slot around the actual school day

Sessions are booked to Gulf Standard Time against your child's real timetable, including Friday finishes, mock weeks and Ramadan timings. Post-iftar slots are normal and are planned in advance rather than improvised when the month arrives.

  5. 05

Review every few weeks against something measurable

After each session you get a written note naming what was covered and what was set. Every four to six weeks we review against a paper score, a criterion mark or a specific skill, and change tutor or format if the evidence is not moving.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Expertise instead of a twenty-minute radius

The selection pool for a La Mer family is every specialist in the subject and level, not the subset willing to drive to Jumeirah 1 in afternoon traffic. For Higher Level sciences, where the local teaching body is genuinely thin, that difference is the whole decision.

Delivery stated once, plainly

Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India. You will not find a sentence on this page implying otherwise, which is more than can be said for some neighbourhood pages in this market.

Every number carries its source

The AED bands on this page are market rates read from providers' own pages in October 2026, and the regulatory facts cite u.ae, KHDA, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson. No statistic appears without a date and an origin, and no IB examination date appears at all, because we could not verify one.

The honesty boundary is a feature, not a disclaimer

Coursework support is teaching and feedback on the student's own work. No tutor writes any part of an exploration, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge submission. In a market where completed internal assessments are openly sold, saying this clearly is the differentiator.

Coverage limits are disclosed before you pay

If no specialist is free for the course, level and slot you need, you hear it at the shortlist stage with the fallback named and the rate band stated. No competitor page read for this market discloses that a coverage limit exists.

Scheduled around a Dubai school year, not a generic one

Term dates, mock windows, Friday finishes, the DP1 summer and Ramadan all change when work can realistically happen. Plans are built against those, which is why the intensive block and the weekly slot are separate products rather than the same thing sold twice.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in LA Mer: your questions answered

Can IB Gram send an IB home tutor to a La Mer address?+

No. IB Gram delivers one-to-one tuition online, over live video, to families in La Mer and everywhere else in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run only in India. We target the home-tutor search because it is the phrase parents use, and we answer it honestly rather than promising a doorstep arrival we do not provide. What a La Mer family gets instead is a tutor chosen for the subject and level rather than for proximity, in a fixed slot that starts when the school run ends rather than after a cross-Jumeirah drive.

How many IB Diploma specialists realistically live within reach of La Mer?+

Fewer than the search results suggest. International Baccalaureate programmes carry about 7 per cent of enrolment across Dubai's 227 private schools, and each IB school staffs two or three teachers per Diploma subject. Narrow that to teachers free on a weekday evening, not barred by their employer's ethics policy from tutoring their own school's students, and living close enough to Jumeirah 1 for a visit to be viable, and the pool for a specific Higher Level course becomes very small. That is the structural reason an area-based search returns generalists and agencies more often than specialists.

What does an IB tutor cost per hour for a Jumeirah 1 family?+

Rates read from provider pages in October 2026 put budget online tutoring at roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150 to 300, an IB or IGCSE specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, and premium named tutors at AED 500 to 650 or more. In-home visits with travel included are quoted from AED 180 to 500. Those are market figures, not our price list. For our own rates, start with the free trial lesson and ask during the consultation that follows.

Is the travel premium on a home visit in Jumeirah worth paying?+

It depends on the child's age. Comparing the published bands, roughly AED 60 to 150 of an in-home hourly rate is the journey rather than the teaching. For a primary-age child who will not settle in front of a screen, physical presence can be decisive and the premium is defensible. For a Diploma student working on an exploration or past papers, the same money buys more by going towards subject depth, because screen sharing handles document-heavy work better than a dining table does and the tutor can be chosen from a far wider pool.

How do I check whether a tutor actually knows my child's IB course?+

Ask six questions in one call. What is the internal assessment worth as a percentage, and when does the school deadline usually fall? Which paper carries the data or extended-response load, and how long is it? What was the command term in the last mark my child lost? Which two topics in this course cause the most avoidable errors? What may a tutor do with a draft under academic-honesty rules? What would session one cover? A teacher who has taught the course to examination answers all six without hesitating.

Does a private tutor working with a La Mer family need a UAE permit?+

Yes. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the private tuition work permit issued through MoHRE. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The federal guidance states that individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published. Since the permit costs nothing, there is no good reason for a working tutor not to hold one.

Can a La Mer child's own schoolteacher tutor them privately in the evening?+

That is the one arrangement to avoid. The code of conduct attached to the MoHRE private tuition permit bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and Abu Dhabi's ADEK has set professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff along the same lines. It looks like the obvious shortcut because the teacher already knows the class, but it puts them in conflict with both their employer and the permit. A specialist from outside the school carries no such conflict and can be chosen for the exact course and level.

Can an IB tutor help with the Mathematics exploration or the Extended Essay?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can explain each assessment criterion and its mark allocation, discuss whether a research question is answerable with the available evidence, teach the statistical or referencing method, and give feedback on text the student has already produced. No tutor writes, redrafts or supplies any part of the submission, because internal assessment must be the student's own work and a breach is assessed against the candidate. In practice this means starting in the scoping weeks rather than the fortnight before the school deadline.

When do IB students in Dubai actually sit their examinations?+

UAE candidates sit the May session, which is the one Dubai schools timetable around; the November session exists as a resit and relocation route. We do not publish specific IB examination or results dates on this page because the IB's own calendar could not be verified from its website for this project, and a wrong date is worse than no date. Your school's IB coordinator holds the version that applies to your child's cohort, including every internal and upload deadline, and that is the authority to plan from.

My child sits IGCSEs before the Diploma. Which series applies in Dubai?+

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series; the February and March series is offered to India only, so it does not apply to a Dubai candidate. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones and Cambridge states the correct zone timetable must be used, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Check the live official timetable, since provisional versions can be revised.

How does the KHDA mandatory-subject rule affect a tutoring timetable in Dubai?+

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run in every Dubai private school whatever the licensed international curriculum, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab students and combined classes prohibited. Instructional time is built on a 40-minute lesson unit. Those lessons take real timetable space, so a Dubai student carries a slightly fuller week than the international programme alone implies. A tutoring plan that ignores it over-books the evenings, which is why we map sessions against the full school week rather than the subject list.

Can tutoring cover Arabic or Islamic Education alongside the IB?+

Partly, and the limit is worth knowing. KHDA requires that for mandatory subjects the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, so legitimate support is skills work on the school's own material rather than an alternative syllabus. Schools must also ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects, which is a credential you can ask your school about directly. Support therefore focuses on language skills, reading fluency and assessment technique.

What happens if no specialist is free for my child's subject and slot?+

You hear it at the shortlist stage rather than after paying. For thinly covered courses such as Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Physics at Higher Level or standalone Theory of Knowledge support, we name the fallback: a specialist matched outside the emirate in the same rate band, a coursework tutor paired with a content tutor, or a slot further into the week. No competitor page read for this market admits a coverage limit exists, which is precisely why we state ours in writing.

What time can an online session realistically start for a La Mer student?+

School days on the Jumeirah coast end between roughly 2.15pm and 3.15pm depending on year group, so 4.00 to 4.15pm is a realistic first slot once a child is home and has eaten. Because nobody has to drive, that slot holds. An in-home option in the same household usually cannot start before 5pm, since the tutor has to cross Jumeirah Beach Road or the Al Wasl junction between 4 and 6pm. Friday timetables finish earlier, which is why Friday evening slots fill first here.

Is online one-to-one tuition effective for a student who prefers a person in the room?+

For most Diploma and MYP students, yes, provided the format is used properly. A shared screen puts a past paper, a mark scheme reference and the student's own draft side by side, which is harder on a table. Sessions can be recorded for revision and a written note goes to the parent afterwards. The genuine trade-off is self-regulation: a younger child who drifts benefits more from physical presence. For those families we say so rather than selling the format that happens to be the one we deliver.
