IB MYP Tutor in Dubai Sports City

An IB MYP tutor in Dubai Sports City is usually wanted by a parent holding a report they cannot interpret: four criterion marks out of eight, a grade from one to seven, and no clear statement of what is wrong. This page compares MYP with IGCSE, explains the criteria by letter, and sets out the real gap to the Diploma. IB Gram teaches Sports City, Victory Heights and Motor City students live online, one to one, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Criteria taught by letter, with what each strand actually rewards

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Sports City

Two systems, and a report that explains neither

A Middle Years Programme report is harder to read than the system it describes. There are four criterion marks, each out of eight, and a grade from one to seven produced by published boundaries. A parent in Dubai Sports City looking at three sixes and a two in a subject has been told something quite specific, and almost nobody explains what. The comparison with the system next door — IGCSE, in schools a few minutes away — makes it clearer, which is why this page starts there.

IGCSE measures content against written papers at the end of two years. MYP measures performance against named criteria across five years, continuously. The practical difference is that an IGCSE student can be behind and look behind, while an MYP student can be behind in one specific strand and look adequate, because three strong criterion marks carry the grade while one weak strand sits inside it untouched for two years.

That is the most common thing a tutor finds in this programme. A student with a steady 5 in Sciences who has never scored above a three on the criterion covering processing and evaluating data. A student with a solid grade in Mathematics whose investigating-patterns mark has been weak since MYP 2. Those gaps are invisible in a grade and obvious in the criterion breakdown, and they are exactly what the Diploma or IGCSE will later price.

The second comparison families in Sports City run is between neighbourhoods. Is the Middle Years Programme better supported here than in Motor City or Arabian Ranches? For tutoring delivered online the answer is that it makes no difference. MYP cohorts are small in every community in this belt, specialists who know the criterion wording rather than just the subject are scarce everywhere equally, and the only genuine local variable is what time a 13-year-old can sit down after the school run.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition live, one to one and online over video in Gulf Standard Time. No tutor is sent to a Sports City address, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For this age group sessions are deliberately shorter — forty-five to sixty minutes is usually the ceiling for useful concentration — and the written note home matters more than it does for older students, because the student will not report back accurately.

The third comparison, and the one with the longest consequences, is between MYP 5 and whatever comes next. Students in this part of Dubailand move at 16 into either the Diploma or an IGCSE year group, sometimes at a different school. Those two destinations expect different things, and a student can be well prepared for one and not the other without anyone noticing until the first term.

What follows is those comparisons set out properly: the two systems side by side, the four criteria by letter and subject group, the eAssessment question, the real gap to the Diploma subject by subject, and what a block of MYP support costs and should contain.

At a glance

  • Four criteria out of eight each, converted to a 1-7 grade by boundaries
  • A respectable grade can conceal one consistently weak strand
  • MYP cohorts are small in every community here; local supply is equally thin
  • Sessions for this age group run 45 to 60 minutes, not 90
  • Lessons are live online in Gulf Standard Time; no UAE home visits
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages of the Middle Years Programme produce requests from this belt, and what a block should do differs sharply between them.

MYP 1-3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Middle Years Programme, early years

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked out of 8 and converted to a 1-7 grade by published boundaries. Assessment is continuous and task-based rather than examination-based, and tasks are set against a specific criterion, so a strong answer that ignores the named strand scores in the middle band.

In Dubai schools these years carry the mandatory KHDA subjects alongside the MYP timetable, so the school week is fuller than the subject list suggests. Requests from Town Square, Mudon and Remraam cluster here, usually after a report flags one subject rather than several.

MYP 4-5Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Middle Years Programme, final two years

The two years that determine readiness for the Diploma. Content density rises, standard and extended routes appear in some subjects, and the Personal Project is completed. The optional eAssessment at the end of MYP 5 produces an externally validated result where a school enters students for it.

This is the window in which a weak criterion strand can still be rebuilt before the Diploma prices it. Families in Sports City and Victory Heights most often act at the very end of MYP 5, which turns a rebuild into a bridge and costs more for less.

BRIDGEAges 15-16 · the summer between

MYP 5 into the Diploma or an IGCSE year

The transition, which in this part of Dubai sometimes involves changing school as well as programme. The Diploma expects content density and sustained writing; an IGCSE year group expects examination technique against a syllabus content list. A student can be ready for one and not the other.

A summer bridging block is the standard Sports City request and the cheapest intervention in the whole sequence: six sessions aimed at algebraic manipulation and sustained written explanation removes most of the first-term difficulty families report in September.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP is organised by subject group, and each group has its own four criteria with its own wording. These are the groups that generate requests from this belt, with what the assessment actually rewards.

Mathematics

MYP 1-5, standard and extended

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Investigating patterns is the strand most often weak, because it asks for generalisation and proof rather than for correct answers to set questions.

Sciences

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Processing and evaluating is where marks disappear: data handled correctly and then evaluated in two sentences scores in the middle band.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. Students who write fluently often score lower on organising than on producing text, because structure is marked separately from expression and is rarely taught as its own skill.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Thinking critically is the strand that separates grades, and it requires evaluating sources and perspectives rather than describing events accurately.

Language Acquisition

MYP 1-5, phases 1-6

Organised by phase rather than by year, with criteria covering comprehending spoken and written text, communicating, and using language. A student can be in a phase that does not match their year group, which parents frequently misread as being behind.

Design

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. The documentation of the process carries as much weight as the product, which surprises students who produce something good and write little about how.

Arts

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, and responding. The process journal is assessed, so consistent documentation matters as much as the final piece.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criteria cover knowing and understanding, planning for performance, applying and performing, and reflecting and improving performance. The written strands are frequently the weak ones for students who perform well physically.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

An extended independent project with a process journal and a report, assessed against published criteria. The journal is part of the assessment rather than a preliminary to it, which is the single most common misunderstanding about this component.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Assessed tasks that cross subject groups with their own criteria covering disciplinary grounding, synthesising, and reflecting. Students treat them as a double dose of two subjects rather than as a separate assessment with its own requirements.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all live online and one to one, and all built around shorter sessions than Diploma work because of the age group.

Single-criterion rebuild

Four to six short sessions aimed at one named strand: processing and evaluating in Sciences, investigating patterns in Mathematics, organising in Language and Literature. The most efficient MYP block available, because the criterion breakdown has already identified the target.

  • Target taken from the report's criterion marks, not from the grade
  • Past task sheets self-assessed against the strand descriptors
  • Written note home after each session, since the student will not relay it

Content and fluency block

Weekly work on the underlying skills MYP assessment assumes but rarely teaches directly: algebraic manipulation, written explanation structure, reading for argument. Slower, less visible in the short term, and the thing that determines how the Diploma goes two years later.

  • Short frequent written drills rather than long problem sets
  • Progress measured against the next programme, not the current report
  • Explicitly not criterion-polishing

Transition bridging block

Six sessions in the summer between MYP 5 and the Diploma or an IGCSE year, aimed at the two things that change: content density and sustained independent writing. The cheapest intervention in the whole MYP sequence and the one families most often skip.

  • Algebraic fluency brought to the level the next programme assumes
  • Sustained written explanation practised at length, not in paragraphs
  • Study habits for a content-dense programme set before term starts

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Sports City

01

What an IB MYP tutor in Dubai Sports City is for

  • Criterion work is fast and visible; fluency work is slow and decisive
  • MYP 1-3: buy fluency. MYP 5 with a Diploma place: buy criterion work
  • Sessions run 45 to 60 minutes for this age group
  • A written note home after each session, because the student will not relay it

An IB MYP tutor in Dubai Sports City means one-to-one Middle Years Programme teaching arranged outside school for a student in or around the Sports City master plan, and IB Gram provides it live online over video in Gulf Standard Time. No tutor is sent to a UAE address; in-home visiting is a service offered only in India, and that is stated plainly rather than discovered later.

The job divides into two quite different things, and families usually want the first while needing the second. The first is criterion work: reading the report's four marks, identifying the weak strand, and teaching what that strand actually rewards. This is fast, satisfying and produces a visible change in the next assessed task. The second is fluency work on the skills the programme assumes — manipulation, structured writing, reading for argument — which is slow and shows up two years later in the Diploma.

For a student in MYP 1 to 3 the second is almost always the better purchase. There is time, the content pressure is low, and the skills built there determine what the final two years can be. For a student in MYP 5 with a Diploma place waiting, the first is usually more urgent, with bridging work in the summer immediately afterwards.

Session length matters for this age group in a way it does not for older students. Forty-five to sixty minutes is the ceiling for useful concentration in most cases, and a ninety-minute session with a 12-year-old produces thirty minutes of work and an hour of fatigue. Shorter and more frequent beats longer and weekly, and because lessons are online a second short session in a week costs no travel on either side.

02

MYP against IGCSE, system by system

In this part of Dubai a family can have one child in the Middle Years Programme and another on an IGCSE course a few minutes away, and the two reports are not comparable. Understanding why makes both more useful. IGCSE is a two-year course ending in written papers against a published content list. MYP is a five-year programme of continuously assessed tasks against named criteria.

The consequences run in both directions. IGCSE gives a clearer signal about content knowledge, because a paper mark is a paper mark, and a weaker signal about process skills, which are barely assessed. MYP gives a detailed signal about process — inquiring, communicating, evaluating — and a weaker signal about content density, because no task asks a student to hold two years of material at once.

That asymmetry is what produces the familiar September difficulty for MYP students entering the Diploma. They arrive with stronger research and writing habits than their IGCSE-educated peers and with less experience of being examined on volume. Their IGCSE peers arrive the other way round. Both gaps are closable and neither is a deficiency in the programme; they are simply what each system measures.

For tutoring, the practical reading is that an MYP student should be assessed on both axes. The criterion breakdown shows the process picture. A short content and fluency check — manipulation under time, a piece of sustained writing, a reading-for-argument task — shows the other. A block planned from only the report addresses half the student.

03

The four criteria, and the strand hiding inside a grade

Every MYP subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight, with published boundaries converting the combination into a grade from one to seven. The criteria differ by subject group, and their wording is the thing being marked. A well-informed answer that does not do what the strand asks for will score in the middle band regardless of accuracy, which students experience as unfairness and is in fact a rubric they have not read.

The arithmetic is where the hidden problem lives. Three strong criterion marks and one weak one still produce a respectable grade, so a student can carry the same weak strand for two or three years while the report looks acceptable. In Sciences that strand is most often processing and evaluating. In Mathematics it is investigating patterns. In Language and Literature it is organising. In Individuals and Societies it is thinking critically.

Those four are not a coincidence. Each is the strand that asks for something other than knowing the material: generalising a pattern, evaluating whether data supports a claim, structuring an argument, weighing a source. Those are teachable skills, each takes four to six short sessions, and none of them is taught explicitly in most schemes of work because the content has to be covered.

The practical instruction for a Sports City parent is to stop reading the grade and start reading the four numbers. If one of them has been two or three points below the others for a year, that is the block. The table below gives the criterion set by subject group so the breakdown can be interpreted without waiting for a parents' evening.

04

eAssessment at the end of MYP 5

Some schools enter MYP 5 students for the optional eAssessment, which produces an externally validated result at the end of the programme. Others do not, and complete the programme on internal assessment alone. Whether a school enters students is a school decision, and a Sports City family should establish it early because it changes what the final year is working towards.

Where eAssessment applies, the final MYP year acquires an external deadline and a format students have not met before. That changes the usual MYP pattern, in which nothing is examined in the conventional sense, and it tends to expose the content-density gap earlier than the Diploma otherwise would. Students accustomed to task-based assessment find sitting an assessment of the whole year unfamiliar rather than difficult.

Where it does not apply, the final year's assessment remains internal, and the transition shock arrives in the first Diploma term instead. Neither arrangement is better, but they argue for different preparation. A student facing eAssessment benefits from timed practice during MYP 5. A student not facing it benefits more from bridging work in the summer that follows.

Either way, the question to ask the school is simple and specific: are students in this year group entered for eAssessment, and if so for which subjects? The answer determines whether a block in MYP 5 should include timed work or should be entirely criterion-focused, and getting that wrong wastes half the sessions. It is worth asking in the autumn of MYP 5 rather than in the spring, because a block that has to add timed practice needs the weeks to do it in.

05

The gap from MYP 5 to the Diploma, subject by subject

The transition from MYP 5 to the Diploma is described in general terms far too often. In practice the gap is specific and differs by subject, which means a bridging block can be targeted rather than diffuse. Families in Sports City who ask for general preparation usually get a general result; those who ask for the two named gaps in the two subjects that matter get something useful.

In mathematics the gap is algebraic fluency and the absence of a calculator in parts of the Diploma assessment. MYP assessment rewards investigation and communication, and a student can be strong in both while manipulation remains slow. Diploma mathematics assumes it is automatic from the first term, which is why the first-term shock is so consistently reported by Dubailand families each September.

In the sciences the gap is content density and quantitative confidence. MYP science assesses inquiry and evaluation well and rarely asks a student to hold a term's content in mind simultaneously. In Language A the gap runs the other way: MYP students are usually well prepared, because analysing and organising transfer directly, and their difficulty is more often the volume of reading than the technique.

The table sets these out so a bridging block can be specified rather than described. Six sessions aimed at two named gaps in the summer between the programmes is the cheapest intervention available in the entire MYP sequence, and it is the one most often skipped because nothing appears to be wrong in July.

06

Why the neighbourhood comparison resolves the same way

  • Fewer schools run MYP here, so cohorts are small in every community
  • Criterion literacy is a separate qualification from subject knowledge
  • Community differences affect session timing, not tutor availability
  • Online matching chooses from everyone who can read the rubric

Families comparing Sports City with Motor City or Arabian Ranches for MYP support expect one community to be better served. The structural reality is that none of them is. The Middle Years Programme is run by fewer schools in this belt than the British curriculum, cohorts are small within each subject group, and the pool of tutors who know what a criterion strand actually rewards is thin everywhere rather than thin in one place.

That thinness is specific. Plenty of tutors can teach science to a 14-year-old. Rather fewer can read a Sciences criterion breakdown, identify that processing and evaluating has been three points below the other strands for two years, and teach the student what an evaluation needs to contain. Criterion literacy is a different qualification from subject knowledge, and it is what MYP support actually requires.

What differs between the communities is the clock and the commute. Sports City students are home early because their schools sit inside the master plan, which for a 13-year-old is the difference between a productive 4pm session and an unproductive 6pm one. Motor City loses weekday evenings to clubs. DAMAC Hills and Remraam add bus time. Those are real constraints and they are solved by scheduling, not by location.

So the comparison worth running is the same one as in every other subject on this site: a tutor chosen from those available nearby on a given evening, against a tutor chosen from those who can read the rubric. For a programme assessed entirely against rubrics, the second pool is the only one with a different answer at the end of it.

07

The Personal Project, and the line a tutor does not cross

  • The process journal is assessed, not preparatory
  • A feasible goal agreed early is worth more than extra sessions later
  • The journal is kept weekly, not reconstructed at the end
  • No part of the project or report is produced by a tutor
  • Self-mark a draft against each criterion before submitting

The Personal Project is completed in MYP 5 and assessed against published criteria, with the process journal forming part of the assessment rather than preparation for it. That single fact resolves most of the difficulty students have with it. A strong product documented thinly scores below a modest product documented well, which feels wrong to a 15-year-old and is exactly what the criteria say.

What support can usefully do is explain the criteria, question whether the stated goal is achievable, check that the journal is being kept as the work proceeds rather than reconstructed afterwards, and give feedback on what the student has written. Choosing a goal that can actually be completed and documented is the single highest-value conversation, and it belongs at the start rather than halfway through.

What support must not do is produce any part of the project or the report. A tutor does not write, complete or draft the submission, and does not create the artefact. This is an academic-honesty requirement rather than a house preference, and work a student did not produce becomes a finding against the student. The same line applies to every assessed task in the programme, including interdisciplinary units.

For a Sports City family the practical sequence is: agree a feasible goal early, keep the journal weekly from the beginning, read the criteria at the start rather than at the end, and self-mark a draft against each criterion before submission. Four short sessions spread across the project period does more than eight in the final fortnight, and costs less.

08

What MYP support costs, and what it should buy

MYP blocks are usually shorter than Diploma blocks and should be, because the targets are narrower and the sessions are shorter. The published hourly rates in this market are these. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the university-student end. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate places specialists at AED 200 to 450 and beyond, and BartyED publishes AED 650 for premium named tutors.

In-home visiting is quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 by independent home tutors once travel is counted. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Local packages advertised include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. All of these are provider-published figures read in October 2026 and none is IB Gram's price list.

For MYP the budget band is a better fit than it is for Diploma work in one specific case: homework supervision and company for a younger student who is coping but disorganised. It is a poor fit for criterion work, because reading a rubric and teaching what a strand rewards is a specialist skill and the band does not buy it. Families often pay the low rate for the high-skill task and conclude tutoring does not work.

The spending advice is therefore unusual for this age group. Buy few sessions and buy them specialist. A four to six session single-criterion block, or a six-session summer bridge, at the qualified or specialist band, beats two years of weekly budget-band support in both cost and effect. The expensive pattern is the familiar one: an unmeasured weekly hour from MYP 2 to MYP 5, which nobody reviews because nothing is obviously wrong.

Permits, the regulator and what is not claimed

  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • KHDA oversees Dubai private schools; other emirates have their own regulators
  • Mandatory UAE subjects make the MYP school week fuller than it looks
  • No board or regulator accreditation is held or claimed; no UAE office exists
  • No assessed task is written, completed or produced for a student

Private tuition in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published.

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described by u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. ADEK covers Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Sharjah Private Education Authority covers Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes required for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes prohibited because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. For an MYP student that means a fuller school week than the subject-group list suggests.

IB Gram holds no International Baccalaureate, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or Ministry of Education approval or accreditation, claims none, and operates no office or centre in the UAE. No grade, criterion mark or admission outcome is promised. No part of a Personal Project, interdisciplinary unit or any other assessed task is produced for a student, and no statistic appears on this page without a sample size, a date and a method.

Where we tutor

MYP across the communities around Sports City

MYP cohorts in this belt are small, and the programme is run by fewer schools than the British curriculum. What differs between communities is the commute and the time a younger student can usefully work.

Dubai Sports City

Schools inside the master plan mean students are home early, which matters more for this age group than for Diploma students. A 4pm session with a 13-year-old works here where it does not in communities with long bus routes.

Victory Heights

Secondary students travel out of the community, arriving home tired. For MYP a 5pm start with a shorter session produces more than a later, longer one.

Motor City

Clubs and training fill the weekday evenings for this age group particularly. Weekend morning sessions hold far better across a term than weekday ones.

Arabian Ranches and Ranches 2

Larger cohorts and more MYP 4 and 5 demand, often around the Personal Project or the transition to the Diploma at the same school.

DAMAC Hills

Longer journeys and later starts. Two short sessions a week suit an MYP student rebuilding a criterion strand better than one long weekly hour.

Town Square and Mudon

The youngest cohorts in this belt and the heaviest MYP 1 to 3 demand. Requests here usually follow a single subject report rather than a general concern.

Remraam and Dubailand Residence

Commutes near an hour each way leave little usable evening for a 12-year-old. Online delivery removes the second journey, which for this age group is the difference between a session happening and being cancelled.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the criterion marks, not the grade

A report showing four criterion marks out of eight per subject contains the diagnosis already. 'Sciences: A six, B five, C two, D five' names the block immediately. The grade on its own hides exactly the information that would make the first session useful.

  2. 02

    Short diagnostic trial session

Forty-five to sixty minutes with the proposed tutor, spent on a recent assessed task and the strand descriptors it was marked against. It ends with a written note to parents naming the strand to target and what that strand actually rewards. Nothing is committed.

  3. 03

Pick one strand or buy fluency

For MYP 4 and 5 with a weak strand, a four to six session criterion block. For MYP 1 to 3, usually a fluency block instead, because there is time and the skills built there decide what the final two years can be. Trying both at once does neither well.

  4. 04

Short, frequent sessions with a note home

Forty-five to sixty minutes, twice a week rather than ninety minutes once, since concentration rather than content is the limit at this age. A written note after each session, because a 13-year-old will not relay what was covered accurately and parents need to know what was set.

    Review at four sessions

The target is measured against the next assessed task's criterion mark, in writing. If it has not moved, the strand may have been misread, or the task may not have assessed it. Both are fixable, and catching it at four sessions avoids a term spent polishing the wrong thing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion marks read before anything is taught

A grade of five can contain three strong strands and one that has been weak for two years, and the four numbers say which. Starting from the breakdown rather than from the grade is what makes an MYP block short and targeted instead of general and long.

Criterion literacy, not just subject knowledge

Teaching science to a 14-year-old and teaching what the processing and evaluating strand rewards are different skills. MYP support needs the second, and it is the scarcer one in every community in this belt, which is why matching by rubric rather than by distance matters here.

Session length set by the age group

Forty-five to sixty minutes is the useful ceiling for most students at this stage, and twice weekly beats one long session. Because lessons are online, a second short session in a week adds no travel for anybody, which makes the better pattern practical rather than theoretical.

Fluency bought early, criterion work bought late

In MYP 1 to 3 the better purchase is manipulation and written structure, which decide how the Diploma goes. In MYP 5 with a place waiting, criterion work is more urgent. Spending in the wrong order is the most common and least visible MYP mistake.

A bridging block that names its targets

Six sessions in the summer aimed at algebraic fluency and sustained writing closes most of the first-term Diploma gap. General preparation produces general results, which is why the gap is specified subject by subject on this page rather than described.

A firm line on assessed work

No part of a Personal Project, interdisciplinary unit or assessed task is written, completed or produced for a student. Tutors explain criteria, question feasibility and give feedback on the student's own writing, and the process journal stays the student's own record throughout.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Sports City: your questions answered

How do I read an MYP report with four criterion marks?+

Ignore the grade first and look at the four numbers. Each criterion is marked out of eight, and published boundaries convert the combination into a grade from one to seven. Three strong marks and one weak one still produce a respectable grade, so the weak strand can persist for years unnoticed. If one criterion has sat two or three points below the others across several reports, that single strand is the block, and it is usually four to six sessions of work.

Can an MYP tutor come to a home in Dubai Sports City?+

Not through IB Gram. All UAE lessons are delivered live online, one to one, over video in Gulf Standard Time, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For this age group the online format also makes the better session pattern practical: two short sessions a week rather than one long one, with no travel on either side. Published in-home market rates in Dubai run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour once travel is counted.

Which MYP criterion is most often the weak one?+

It depends on the subject group, and the pattern is consistent. In Sciences it is processing and evaluating. In Mathematics it is investigating patterns. In Language and Literature it is organising. In Individuals and Societies it is thinking critically. Each of those asks for something other than knowing the material — generalising, judging whether data supports a claim, structuring an argument, weighing a source — and none is usually taught explicitly, because content has to be covered.

Is the Middle Years Programme good preparation for the IB Diploma?+

For process skills, yes: research habits, extended writing and evaluation transfer directly and MYP students often arrive stronger in those than their IGCSE-educated peers. The gap is content density and examination stamina, because no MYP task asks a student to hold a term's material in mind at once. In mathematics specifically the gap is algebraic fluency without a calculator. Both are closable with a six-session summer block aimed at those two named things.

Should my child in MYP 2 have a tutor at all?+

Possibly, but for fluency rather than for criterion polishing. At that stage there is time, content pressure is low, and the skills built — algebraic manipulation, written explanation structure, reading for argument — determine what the final two years can be. A single-criterion block makes more sense in MYP 4 or 5, where the report's weak strand has a direct effect on the grade and on the move at 16.

Does the Personal Project journal count towards the mark, or just the report?+

Published criteria covering the whole process, with the process journal forming part of the assessment rather than preparation for it. A strong product documented thinly scores below a modest product documented well. Support can explain the criteria, question whether the goal is achievable, check the journal is kept as the work proceeds, and give feedback on the student's own writing. No tutor writes, drafts or produces any part of the project or report.

How does MYP eAssessment change what the final year should work towards?+

Ask the school directly, because it is a school decision and it changes what the final year is working towards. Where eAssessment applies, MYP 5 acquires an external deadline and a format students have not met, so timed practice during the year is worth including in any block. Where it does not, assessment stays internal and bridging work in the following summer is the better use of the same money. Getting this wrong wastes half a block.

Why does my child write well and still score low on organising?+

Because organising is marked separately from producing text and from using language. Fluent expression earns credit under a different criterion; structure that serves an argument earns it under this one. A student who writes beautifully in a sequence that does not build towards a point will be marked accordingly, and most find this genuinely surprising. It is teachable in four to six sessions: plan before writing, make each paragraph do one job, and signpost the argument.

How long should a session be for a 12-year-old?+

Forty-five to sixty minutes in most cases. Concentration rather than content is the limiting factor at this age, and a ninety-minute session usually produces half an hour of work and an hour of fatigue, which also damages willingness to attend the next one. Two shorter sessions a week beat one long one, and because lessons are online the second session adds no journey for anyone, which makes the better pattern practical.

Is MYP mathematics enough preparation for Analysis and Approaches?+

Not on its own, for most students. MYP mathematics assesses investigation and communication well, and a student can score strongly on both while manipulation remains slow. Diploma Analysis assumes manipulation is automatic from the first term and includes assessment without a calculator. The fix is short daily algebraic drills over the summer between the programmes rather than reading ahead, which adds content on top of an unresolved fluency problem.

Why are MYP specialists hard to find in this part of Dubai?+

Because fewer schools in this belt run the programme than run the British curriculum, cohorts are small within each subject group, and criterion literacy is a separate qualification from subject knowledge. Plenty of tutors can teach science to a 14-year-old; rather fewer can read a criterion breakdown and teach what a specific strand rewards. That scarcity is identical across Sports City, Motor City and the Ranches rather than concentrated in one community.

What does a short MYP block cost in Dubai?+

A four to six session single-criterion block at the qualified or specialist band — published from AED 150 for IGCSE and from AED 200 for IB by Unitors, with specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more — is the usual shape. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle. All figures are provider-published and were read in October 2026; none is IB Gram's price list.

Can a tutor help with an interdisciplinary unit task?+

A tutor can explain the criteria, which cover disciplinary grounding, synthesising and reflecting, and can give feedback on what the student has written. A tutor cannot write, complete or produce any part of the task. Students frequently treat these units as a double dose of two subjects rather than as a separate assessment with its own requirements, and simply reading the criteria at the start resolves most of the difficulty without any teaching at all.

My child is moving from MYP 5 to an IGCSE year group. What changes?+

The assessment model entirely. IGCSE measures content against a published syllabus list in terminal written papers, so the skills to build are examination technique, timed recall and working shown for method marks. MYP has probably prepared the student well for research and extended writing and less well for sitting a paper to time. A short summer block on timed practice and written-method discipline covers the main difference.

Send the four criterion marks

For an IB MYP tutor in Dubai Sports City, the most useful first message is the criterion breakdown rather than the grade. Four numbers out of eight per subject usually identify the block immediately, and if one strand has been consistently below the others the target is already named. The trial session is forty-five to sixty minutes with the proposed tutor, spent on a recent assessed task and the descriptors it was marked against, delivered live online in Gulf Standard Time, and it ends with a written note home.
