IB IGCSE Private Tutor in the UAE

An IB IGCSE private tutor in the UAE works inside a system with more moving parts than most families expect. Your child's school is licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the federal Ministry of Education. The person teaching them privately needs a MoHRE permit held in their own name. And the Ministry decides later which five IGCSE subjects count towards equivalency. IB Gram matches your child to a subject specialist and teaches one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

The rules sitting behind a private tutor in the UAE

Most searches for a private tutor end at price and availability. In the UAE, two further questions decide whether the arrangement is sound. The first is whether the person teaching your child is permitted to give paid private lessons at all: that permit is federal, issued by MoHRE, and it belongs to the individual rather than to any company. The second is which authority licensed your child's school, because that body approves the curriculum, the assessment methods and, in two emirates, the fees the school may charge.

Those two answers rarely come from the same place. Private schools in Dubai answer to KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain answer to ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools there. Sharjah answers to the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah to its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah to the Ministry of Education directly. Not one of those five bodies regulates an individual tutor. That sits with MoHRE, and the distinction is where most of the confusion on tutoring websites begins.

A household running both boards feels the system twice. A Year 10 child sits Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel papers with codes printed on the entry sheet. A sibling in DP1 is working to Internal Assessment deadlines the school sets and an exam series the IB sets. The school owns the entry. The board owns the timetable. The Ministry decides later which certificates it recognises. A tutor who cannot say which of those three owns a given deadline will still give you confident advice, and it will be advice about the wrong one.

This page is written for the parent doing that checking. It sets out what the permit actually says and where to read it, what each regulator does and does not reach into, the KHDA rules governing Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies on your child's timetable, the five-subject rule reported for British-track equivalency, and the published market rates in AED so you can see where a quote sits. Every figure below carries the body or provider that published it and the month it was read. Where something is not verified, the page says so rather than printing a number.

One thing is stated up front, because it changes how you read the rest. IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video. Home visits are part of our service in India only, and nobody is sent to a UAE address. The reason is specialist supply rather than convenience: the IB accounted for 7% of the Dubai private-school roll in 2024-25, so a Chemistry HL or Economics HL specialist is genuinely scarce, and matching by subject and level beats matching by driving distance.

At a glance

  • The private tuition work permit is federal, held by the individual, and granted free of charge for two years
  • KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the RAK Department of Knowledge and the Ministry of Education regulate schools, not tutors
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies run alongside every licensed curriculum in Dubai private schools
  • British-track equivalency reportedly counts five IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education
  • Published UAE market rates run from roughly AED 45 to AED 650 an hour depending on tier and format
  • Lessons here are one-to-one over live video, scheduled around school hours, prayer times and the Ramadan timetable
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four programmes turn up in these households, often two at once. Each has its own assessment machinery and its own relationship with the UAE system: which authority licensed it, which Ministry subjects sit beside it, and what the certificate is worth when an equivalency file is eventually opened. The notes below are about that relationship rather than the brochure.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Two different boards, often inside one school building. Cambridge IGCSE subjects carry four-digit codes such as 0580 Mathematics and 0625 Physics, with Core and Extended tiers in many subjects. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE uses codes such as 4MA1 and 4PH1 and runs some subjects modularly. The code on the entry sheet, not the subject name, decides which papers your child sits and which past material is relevant. A tutor who prepares a student against the wrong specification wastes a term, and neither of you finds out until a mock.

UK curriculum schools took 37% of Dubai's private-school roll in 2024-25, the largest single share, so IGCSE tutor supply is the healthiest of any board in the country. That cuts both ways. The market is crowded with general IGCSE tutors and thin on people who can explain the difference between 0580 Extended and 4MA1 Higher Tier. Ask which code they have taught this academic year, and ask them to name the papers.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

The MYP marks against four criteria per subject, each out of 8, and converts the total to a 1-7 grade using subject-specific boundaries. There is no external paper for most MYP students, so the mark that matters is the one a classroom teacher awards against a published criterion descriptor. Families moving from MYP 5 into DP1 often discover that five years of criterion-based marking taught the student a great deal about process and very little about sitting a timed paper under exam conditions.

Several Dubai and Abu Dhabi IB schools run MYP through Year 11 instead of IGCSE, which creates a gap the equivalency route does not anticipate: there are no five IGCSE grades to count. Families planning a UAE university application from an MYP school should ask the school's coordinator what the file will actually show, and verify the position on moe.gov.ae before Year 11 options are locked.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Internal Assessments are marked by the school and moderated by the IB, so an IA mark is provisional until moderation is done. The HL and SL split changes paper count and component weighting rather than topic names, which is why a student who moves level mid-course usually needs the assessment structure retaught rather than the content. Most of the lost marks at HL are structural, not conceptual.

The IB accounted for 7% of the Dubai private-school roll in 2024-25, and three of the seven new private schools opening for 2026-27 are IB schools, part of 16,846 new places announced for that intake. Demand for HL specialists in Chemistry, Physics, Economics and Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is therefore rising faster than local supply, which is the practical argument for matching online.

PYPAges 3-12 · PYP

IB Primary Years Programme

The PYP has no external examination. Progress is reported against transdisciplinary themes and learner-profile attributes, which parents often find hard to convert into a reading age or a maths level. Support at this stage is about building the number fluency and extended-writing stamina that MYP criteria will later assume, not about preparing for a paper that does not exist. The useful question for a PYP parent is what the child can do unaided, in writing, in twenty minutes.

A PYP child in Dubai, Sharjah or Abu Dhabi also carries the Ministry subjects from the start of primary, with Arabic as a first or additional language depending on the group they are placed in. Early Arabic support is the most frequent request we see from UAE primary families, and the placement decision, Arab or non-Arab stream, determines which syllabus and which language of instruction applies.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

The IB Diploma subjects below are the ones UAE families ask for most. Each description names where marks are actually lost rather than restating the syllabus heading, because that is the information a parent cannot get from a school report. Every subject is taught against the current specification and the student's own school deadlines.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, which is where most of the damage happens: algebraic manipulation that a graphic display calculator had been quietly hiding all year. HL adds proof by induction, complex numbers and vectors. UAE engineering and medicine applicants are usually asked for AA rather than AI, so the route choice has consequences.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics and modelling carry the papers, and marks go on interpretation rather than algebra: stating what a correlation coefficient means in context, choosing the right test, justifying a model. HL financial mathematics and graph theory catch students who chose AI expecting a lighter course than AA.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics account for most lost marks at HL, and the extended-response questions reward structured reasoning rather than recall. The Internal Assessment most often fails on a research question that cannot be measured with the apparatus a school actually owns, which is a planning problem, not a chemistry one.

Physics

HL and SL

Students who can solve the numerical question still lose the explanation marks, because command terms such as explain and justify expect a chain of causes written down in order. Electricity and fields are the recurring weak topics, and uncertainty treatment in the Internal Assessment is routinely underdone.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume is the problem rather than difficulty. Marks sit in precise terminology and in data-based questions about unfamiliar experiments, which reward reading the axes before the question stem. HL option material is frequently taught last and revised least, and it shows in the Paper 3 mark.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy decides grades: axes labelled, equilibrium shifted the right way, welfare areas shaded and then referred to in the prose. HL Paper 3 quantitative questions are marked for method as well as answer, and the Internal Assessment commentaries need genuinely current articles with a clear syllabus link.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 unseen analysis is where most students underperform, because they summarise the text instead of arguing about its effect on a reader. The Individual Oral needs a defensible global issue and two extracts the student can say something structured about for ten minutes without notes.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application beats tool naming: a SWOT that leads to a decision earns marks that a labelled box never will. HL extension topics and the pre-released case study for Paper 1 reward planned preparation across months rather than a revision sprint in the final fortnight.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Object-oriented programming and the HL abstract data structures are the common failure points, along with pseudocode discipline under time pressure. The solution-development Internal Assessment needs a real client whose requirements can be evidenced, and students routinely arrange that client far too late.

Arabic B and Arabic A

HL and SL

For Arabic B, marks go on productive range rather than comprehension; for Arabic A, on literary analysis in Standard Arabic. In the UAE this sits alongside the school's own mandatory Arabic provision, and the stream a child is placed in decides which syllabus and which language of instruction apply.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE support here is organised by syllabus code, because one subject name hides two different sets of papers. Ask your child's school for the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus codes or the Pearson specification codes on the entry sheet before the first lesson. Tiering, practical assessment and grade ceiling all follow from that code.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher

Cambridge 0580 splits into Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1 into Foundation and Higher Tier. The grade ceiling differs by tier, so tiering is an attainment decision with an administrative deadline attached rather than a matter of preference, and it is the school that submits it.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended

The alternative-to-practical paper rewards apparatus description, graph plotting and error reasoning, none of which is taught by reading the textbook again. Electricity and waves are the recurring weak topics, and Extended adds quantitative work on momentum and fields that Core candidates never meet.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Mole calculations and the organic families carry the Extended papers. Students who learned definitions by rote lose marks on the questions that ask for a test and its result, because both halves have to be stated to score, and only one half usually appears.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended

Terminology precision decides the grade more than content coverage does. Transport in plants, homeostasis and inheritance diagrams are the standard losses, and Extended papers want the mechanism explained where Core papers accepted a description of what happens.

English Language (0500 / 4EA1)

First Language

Directed writing and the summary question are the most teachable gains available, because both are marked against stated criteria that most candidates have never actually read. Timing on the longer composition is the other common failure, and it is fixed by practice under the clock.

Business Studies and Economics (0450 / 0455)

Core and Extended

Case-study questions are marked for applied judgement rather than definitions. The highest-tariff questions ask for a recommendation with justification, and candidates who list advantages and disadvantages without choosing a side cap their own marks at the lower band.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families buy the same specialist hour, plus the coursework arrangement that carries its own rules. All of it happens one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around school hours, prayer times and, during Ramadan, post-Iftar slots.

Weekly one-to-one over live video

One tutor, one student, a fixed weekly slot and a shared screen the student writes on. The tutor works to your child's school calendar rather than a generic scheme of work, which means the week before a school assessment looks nothing like the week after it. Sessions run 60 or 90 minutes. The longer slot suits HL paper practice, the shorter one suits IGCSE topic repair where attention is the limiting factor.

  • Scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, after school hours or post-Iftar during Ramadan
  • The same tutor each week, so a diagnosis carries forward instead of restarting
  • Written feedback against the school's own marking criteria
  • Session notes a parent can read without being a subject specialist

Pre-series intensive before an exam window

A concentrated block in the weeks before a Cambridge, Pearson or IB series, built around paper technique rather than new content. The published series dates decide when it starts, and for a UAE candidate those are June and November. Cambridge's June papers run across May and June, so a block aimed at that series begins in February rather than after the Easter break; a block aimed at the November series begins as the autumn term opens, because the papers fall in late October and November. Two or three sessions a week is the usual shape, tapering in the final fortnight.

  • Counted backwards from the board's own published timetable, not from a term plan
  • Marked practice under timed conditions, with the mark scheme logic explained
  • Narrowed to the two or three topics the student's own scripts show as weakest

Coursework supervision sessions

Scheduled feedback on the student's own Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge work, at the stages where feedback is permitted. The tutor reads what the student has written and teaches against it: research question viability, data treatment, criterion wording, citation discipline. Nothing is drafted or rewritten by the tutor, and the school supervisor remains the person who signs the authenticity declaration.

  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never a draft supplied by a tutor
  • Criterion-by-criterion reading, so a student can see where the marks sit
  • A written record of what was advised, which the school is welcome to see

One household, two boards

Where an IGCSE sibling and a Diploma sibling both need support in the same week, the schedule is built once. Different specialists for different specifications, but one calendar, one point of contact and one set of session notes, so a parent is not reconciling two providers against two exam calendars. Slots are not shared across siblings, because the boards are not the same and the papers are not the same.

  • Separate specialists per board and level, working to one shared schedule
  • A single monthly view of what each child actually covered
  • Rescheduling handled in one place when school events collide

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What a UAE family is actually hiring when they hire a private tutor

A private tutor in the UAE is a person holding a permit in their own name. The federal route is the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. It is not a company licence, not a teaching qualification and not a subject endorsement. A tutoring operation with premises and employed staff is a different legal animal altogether: that needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, obtained in stages, with initial approval first and renewal requested annually before expiry.

So the phrase private tutor describes a legal arrangement rather than a standard of teaching. The eligible categories for the permit include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. A permit therefore tells you the arrangement is lawful. It tells you nothing at all about whether the person has taught Paper 2 of 0620 this year, or read an Internal Assessment against criterion wording. Those are separate questions, and only the second kind changes a grade.

An IB IGCSE private tutor in the UAE is usually being hired into a household running two assessment systems at once, which is why the question of who owns a deadline matters as much as who teaches the lesson. IB Gram matches your child to a specialist in their specification and level, and teaches one-to-one over live video. Home visits are part of our service in India only, and nobody is sent to a UAE address. What that buys is access to the right specialist rather than the nearest available adult, which is the real constraint in this market.

02

The private tuition work permit, line by line

The permit is documented in two places a parent can read without an intermediary. The u.ae work permits page sets out the legal basis, the eligible categories and the enforcement position. The MoHRE service page, titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, sets out the application route, lists no fee, and gives a completion time of two working days through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Two working days is the detail worth remembering, because it means a tutor who says the paperwork takes months is not describing this permit.

What the permit covers is the tutor, not the lesson format. Nothing in the published rules makes the permit conditional on teaching in a particular room, which is why a permitted tutor can teach over video. What the permit does carry is a code of conduct, and that code is reported to bar a permit holder from tutoring students affiliated with their own school. In Abu Dhabi the same ground is covered from the school's side: press reporting describes ADEK ethics rules preventing private and charter school staff from giving paid private lessons to students enrolled where they teach.

The enforcement position is stated and the penalty schedule is not. The official wording is that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit will be subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No figure is published alongside that sentence, so any specific amount you find quoted on a tutoring site or in a forum post is unverified. The honest answer to a parent asking what the fine is: the obligation is real, the number is not published, and the place to check is mohre.gov.ae rather than a tutoring advert.

Where each authority's remit stops, and who covers your tutor instead

Five bodies regulate private schools across the seven emirates, and each one's remit stops at the school gate. KHDA oversees the quality of private education in Dubai. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge does the same in Ras Al Khaimah, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Federally, private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies, provided they adhere to the Ministry's general regulations.

Two of those authorities reach further than inspection. Sharjah's authority and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is a materially different relationship from quality oversight: it means a school in those emirates cannot simply add a programme or change an assessment approach on its own timetable. For a family planning two years of support around a particular course, the question of whether a programme is approved to run at all is worth asking before the first tuition invoice.

None of the five regulates the individual teaching your child privately. That is MoHRE's permit, which is why no school regulator can vouch for a tutor and no tutor can borrow a school regulator's authority. The practical consequence is uncomfortable but useful: nobody inspects private tutoring the way KHDA inspects a school. There is no published band, no report and no rating to read. The checks therefore fall to you, and the next section sets out which of them can actually be completed from public sources.

KHDA does not approve private tutors, so what does that phrase on tutoring sites mean?

Three real approvals exist in this space, and tutoring marketing routinely blurs them into one. The first is the KHDA Educational Services Permit, issued to a training institute that has premises and staff in Dubai; it is granted in stages, with initial approval first, a window of up to six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry. The second is KHDA approval held by school teachers of Arabic and Islamic Education, which schools are required to ensure for anyone teaching those subjects. The third is the MoHRE permit, held by an individual.

None of those three is a KHDA endorsement of a tutoring website, and none of them transfers. An institute's permit says nothing about the person who turns up on the call. A school teacher's subject approval belongs to that teacher inside that school. A MoHRE permit belongs to one individual and expires in two years. When a site tells you its tutors carry regulator backing, the useful reply is to ask which of the three it means, for which named person, and where the number can be checked. A straight answer arrives quickly; a vague one is itself the answer.

IB Gram's position is written down so it cannot drift. No UAE authority approves, licenses, accredits or endorses this platform, and no page of ours will imply one does. What we can evidence instead is narrower and more useful: which specification a tutor has taught this year, which levels, what they will show you in a trial lesson, and what they will refuse to do with assessed coursework. That is a smaller claim than regulator backing, and it is the one that survives being checked.

05

The checks a parent can make without taking anyone's word

Most tutoring claims are either publicly checkable or not claims at all. The permit is checkable by asking the tutor to show their own MoHRE permit record, since the permit is issued to them and costs them nothing to produce. A school's inspection outcome is checkable on the regulator's own site rather than in a provider's summary of it. Equivalency requirements are checkable on moe.gov.ae. A star rating published by a provider about itself is checkable nowhere, which is the point worth noticing about it.

Two claims deserve particular care because they are common and consequential. The first is examiner status. Current examining work is confidential and time-limited, and a provider that cannot evidence it for a named individual should not be describing anyone as an examiner, nor implying access to marking, boundaries or unreleased papers. The second is a school relationship. Supporting students who attend a school is ordinary; being a partner of that school is a specific arrangement with paperwork behind it. Lists of school logos under a heading about trust are usually the first kind described as the second.

The last check is the cheapest and the most revealing. Ask what the provider will not do. A straight answer about assessed coursework, about grade promises, and about what happens when no specialist is available tells you more about how an organisation behaves under pressure than any quantity of testimonial copy. A provider who has thought about those boundaries will answer in one sentence each. A provider who has not will change the subject to results.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies: the content rule an outside tutor must obey

Whatever curriculum a Dubai private school is licensed to teach, Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies sit on the timetable beside it. The KHDA mandatory subjects guidance sets this out as a requirement for all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with its requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. For an IB or IGCSE family this is the part of the week nobody budgets tuition for, and the part most often misunderstood.

The placement rules are specific rather than general. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language. Arabic is the primary language for Social Studies for Arab students. For non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in Moral, Social and Cultural studies, the school's licensed-curriculum language applies.

The rule that catches outside tutors is about material, not timetabling. For the mandatory subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. A tutor who arrives with their own worksheets for UAE Social Studies is working against that rule, however good the worksheets are. The defensible approach is to teach the student's own school material: the set texts, the school's assessment tasks, the vocabulary and script work the class is already doing, and the exam technique that sits around it.

Who owns which step of the exam year: the school, the board, or you

The single most expensive misunderstanding in an exam year is about ownership. A family can change almost nothing about an exam timetable and almost everything about preparation, yet most of the panic arrives over the parts they never controlled. Cambridge's own series structure illustrates the arithmetic. A UAE candidate sits the June series or the November one, the February and March sitting being India's rather than theirs, and for both of them the centre collects final entries and forecast grades months before the first paper, on dates Cambridge publishes for that series alone. The IGCSE exam entry deadline therefore falls well before the exam period opens, and the school submits it, which puts the conversation that could still change a tier in the term before the one families actually panic in.

There is a second administrative detail with real consequences. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam because the wrong zone timetable was used. The zone belongs to the centre, not the family, so the question to ask the exams officer is simply which zone the school is in and which timetable version the printed one at home corresponds to.

Results and appeals follow the board's own clock. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May or June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. For the IB, this page publishes no session or results date: ibo.org blocks automated checking, so those dates must come from your school's IB coordinator or ibo.org directly.

Year 9 options, read against the Ministry of Education equivalency rule

Subject choices made at 13 or 14 decide what a Ministry of Education equivalency file can show at 18. As reported in July 2026, the British track requires a pass in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade no lower than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. That is the rule an options sheet should be read against, before it is signed.

The detail that trips families up is what does not count. The same reporting states that Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE or IGCSE count. A child taking exactly five subjects, two of which are Arabic and Islamic Education, can therefore pass all five and still not satisfy the count. At least one widely ranking tutoring page states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is not what the reported rule says; publishing the five-subject rule correctly, and telling you to verify it, is more useful than inheriting someone else's error.

Two further rows matter. On the American track, the reported requirements include English proficiency through a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics through at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. For the IB Diploma, no points threshold is published here at all, because none has been read on moe.gov.ae. Equivalency is also not something a tutoring platform performs or can promise; it is a Ministry process, and the Ministry is where it gets confirmed.

What private tuition costs beside a Dubai school fee that is not rising

Tuition spending is easier to judge next to the school fee it sits beside. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. For a family whose largest education line is flat for a year, the question becomes what the discretionary line is worth, and that is a question the tutoring market mostly answers by refusing to publish a number at all.

Published market rates, read in October 2026, run across a wide band. Budget online tuition and university-student tutors appear from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour. A qualified subject tutor working online sits around AED 150 to AED 300. IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists are advertised from about AED 200 to AED 450 and above, premium named tutors as high as AED 650, and an in-home visit including travel between roughly AED 180 and AED 500. Monthly packages seen include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. Those are other providers' published figures, not an IB Gram price list.

What moves a number inside that band is specificity, not branding. A generalist covering five subjects charges less than someone who teaches only Chemistry HL, and should. A private tutor in Dubai who can produce last year's 0620 Extended scripts and talk about where the marks went is pricing a different service from someone offering homework supervision. Our own position on price is deliberately not on this page: you get a free first session, then a consultation that quotes against the specification, the level and the hours actually needed.

Academic honesty, and who actually signs the declaration

Every assessed component that leaves a school carries a declaration of authenticity, and the student's name is on it. For the IB, the school supervisor also signs to say the work is the student's own, which is why a supervisor asks to see drafts and asks questions about method. A paid tutor signs nothing, holds no part of that chain, and cannot transfer responsibility away from the student. That single structural fact is why coursework support has to be shaped as teaching rather than production, and it is a rule about consequences, not etiquette.

The academic honesty rules permit a great deal and forbid one thing. A tutor may teach the subject content an Internal Assessment needs, explain what a criterion is asking for in plain words, read a student's own draft and say where it is unclear, show how data should be treated, demonstrate referencing, and run the student through viva-style questions a supervisor might ask. A tutor may not supply text, rewrite a section into its final form, source and structure an argument on the student's behalf, or hand over material a student then presents as their own thinking.

This market contains providers that cross that line and advertise it as a service, complete with a price. The consequence of buying it does not land on the provider. It lands on a student whose diploma is at risk, in a process the family cannot appeal on grounds of having paid for help. So the position here is stated in the open: no assessed component is written, completed or rewritten by anyone working through IB Gram, and a tutor who is asked to do it says no and tells us. Families who want that service are better served elsewhere, and we would rather lose the booking.

Where we tutor

The seven emirates, and who regulates schooling in each

Which emirate you live in changes who approves your child's curriculum, who publishes the inspection report and, in two cases, who signs off the fees. It does not change who regulates your tutor, because that is federal. The notes below are about the school system in each emirate, with the source named.

Dubai

KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. It published 227 private schools and 387,441 students for 2024-25 across 17 curricula, and confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for 2026-27.

Abu Dhabi

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Press reporting also describes ADEK ethics rules barring school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school; the current wording should be checked against ADEK's own policy document.

Al Ain

Al Ain sits under ADEK alongside Abu Dhabi, so the same licensing and ethics framework applies. Families here ask about specialist supply more often than regulation: an Analysis and Approaches HL or Chemistry HL specialist is harder to find locally than in Dubai.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and, unusually, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Curriculum approval sitting with the emirate matters when a school changes board or adds a programme part-way through a cycle.

Ajman

Private schools in Ajman are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate-level authority. Ajman appears in almost no UAE tutoring content at all, which usually means families here are handed Dubai-shaped advice that does not match their own regulator.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in Ras Al Khaimah and, like Sharjah, approves fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. A move from Dubai to RAK part-way through a year changes both the regulator and the approval route for a programme.

Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah

Both are supervised by the Ministry of Education directly. School choice is narrower, so more families sit IGCSE subjects as private candidates or travel for a programme, which makes a tutor working online to the board's published timetable the practical option rather than the fallback.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai

KHDA publishes an inspection report for each of these schools on its own site, and the rating you can read there is the only one worth quoting back at anyone. Students we support attend schools across this group, on both IB and IGCSE tracks, sometimes in the same family.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Deira International School
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Kings' School Al Barsha

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of these schools, and its reported ethics rules for school staff are the reason a parent should think twice before accepting private lessons from a teacher at their own child's school. Students we support attend schools across this group.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Raha International School
  • Al Ain English Speaking School

Sharjah and the Northern Emirates

Here the regulator changes with the emirate: SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. In two of those cases the authority also approves the programme and the fees.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Sharjah English School
  • American School of Creative Science Sharjah
  • RAK Academy
  • Ajman Academy
  • Scholars International Academy

Schools are named here as context for the system your child studies inside. IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them, and none of them has endorsed this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the code, not just the subject

The first thing we ask for is the specification each child is entered for: 0580 or 4MA1, HL or SL, Core or Extended. It is printed on the entry sheet or the school's subject letter. Matching on a subject name alone is how a student ends up well prepared for the wrong papers, and nobody notices until a mock.

  2. 02

A free first session, and the condition attached to it

The first 30-minute session is free, once per student, and no card details are taken to book it. It is a working lesson rather than a sales call: the tutor teaches something, then tells you what they found. If the match is wrong, say so and we match again at no cost to you.

  3. 03

A plan counted backwards from published dates

You get a plan built backwards from dates the board has published, not from a generic term structure. Where a date is not published or not verified, and every IB session date falls into that category here, the plan says so and points you at your school's IB coordinator rather than guessing.

  4. 04

    Written feedback after every session

Notes go out after each lesson: what was taught, what the student got wrong, what to do before the next slot. Parents read the same notes the tutor keeps. Progress is reported against the school's own marking criteria rather than a score we invented for the purpose.

  5. 05

What we say when nobody is free

Some subject and level combinations have thin coverage, HL sciences in particular. When no specialist is free at the time you want, we tell you the likely wait instead of filling the slot with a generalist, and you decide. Asking for the code up front is what makes that disclosure possible early.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Sources, not assertions

Every regulator rule, permit detail and AED band on this page is attributed to the body or provider that published it, with the month it was read. Where a figure is unverified, including IB session dates and any Diploma points threshold for equivalency, the page says so rather than printing a number that looks authoritative.

Matched to the specification

A tutor is matched to the code on the entry sheet and the level, so the papers they prepare for are the papers your child sits. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel are treated as different qualifications here, because they are: different codes, different tiering, different practical arrangements.

The honesty line is written down

A tutor here teaches, reads and gives feedback on work the student produced. No assessed component is drafted, completed or rewritten by a tutor. We publish that because the alternative is sold openly in this market, and a parent deserves to know which kind of provider they are talking to.

Scheduling that matches the UAE week

Lessons sit in Gulf Standard Time around school hours, prayer times, Eid and the Ramadan timetable, with post-Iftar slots available. Families who travel between the UAE and abroad keep the same tutor and move the slot rather than starting again with someone new.

No regulator is claimed as a sponsor

KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education and MoHRE are described on this page because they shape your options. Not one of them approves, licenses or endorses this platform, and no page of ours will suggest otherwise. What we claim instead is checkable in a trial lesson.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

Does a private tutor teaching my child in the UAE need a permit, and what should I ask to see?+

Yes. Private tuition in the UAE runs on a MoHRE work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is issued to the individual, granted free of charge for two years, and applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days. Because it belongs to the tutor personally and costs them nothing, asking to see their own permit record is a reasonable request and an easy one to meet. A tutor who cannot produce it, or who describes a long and expensive licensing process instead, is not describing this permit.

KHDA does not approve individual tutors, so what are tutoring websites referring to?+

Usually one of three different things. KHDA issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes that have premises and staff in Dubai, granted in stages and renewed annually. Schools must separately ensure that their own teachers of Arabic and Islamic Education hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects. And MoHRE issues the private tuition permit to individuals. None of the three is a regulator endorsement of a tutoring website, and none of them transfers to whoever joins your video call. Ask which one is meant, for which named person, and where the reference can be checked.

Can a teacher at my child's own school take them for paid private lessons?+

Treat that offer with caution. Press reporting describes ADEK ethics rules preventing private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct is reported to bar serving students affiliated with the permit holder's own school. The current wording should be checked against ADEK's own policy document rather than a news summary. Beyond the rules, there is a plainer problem: the person teaching the class, setting the assessment and being paid privately for the same content is holding three roles that conflict.

Does the private tuition permit still apply when the lessons happen over video?+

The permit attaches to the tutor rather than to the room. Nothing in the published rules makes it conditional on teaching in person, which is why a permitted tutor can teach online. What does follow the tutor into a video lesson is the code of conduct attached to the permit, including the restriction reported around students affiliated with their own school. For a parent the useful consequence is that the permit question and the delivery question are separate: ask about the permit, then ask separately how the lesson is actually taught and what the student writes on.

How long is the MoHRE private tuition work permit valid, and what does it cost the tutor?+

The published position is that the private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years. The MoHRE service page for it lists no fees and gives a completion time of two working days, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Two points follow. A tutor who adds a permit fee to your invoice has the position wrong, because there is no fee to pass on. And a two-year validity means a permit shown to you can be out of date, so the issue date is worth a glance alongside the name.

Can a university student in Dubai hold the same tutoring permit as a qualified teacher?+

Yes, and this is the most useful thing to understand about the permit. The eligible categories published on u.ae include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. A permit therefore confirms that the arrangement is lawful. It says nothing about subject depth, exam-board familiarity or experience of marking. Those have to be checked separately, which is why the question that actually predicts a grade is which specification and level the tutor has taught this year.

Do the five IGCSE subjects counted for Ministry equivalency have to include Arabic?+

Reporting from July 2026 states the opposite: Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE or IGCSE count. The British-track requirement reported is a pass in five accredited subjects at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, together with one accredited Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. The practical risk is a child entered for exactly five subjects of which two are Arabic and Islamic Education. Verify the current rule on moe.gov.ae before options are signed, because this is reported guidance rather than a Ministry page.

Why can't my child's Arabic and Islamic Education classes be combined with the other group?+

Because the two groups are following different curricula in different languages. The KHDA mandatory subjects guidance requires schools to organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited due to the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, while non-Arab students follow the school's licensed-curriculum language. Knowing which stream your child sits in decides which syllabus any outside support should follow.

May an outside tutor use their own worksheets for UAE Social Studies?+

They should not. The KHDA mandatory subjects guidance states that for these subjects the use of any different or additional content, without prior permission from the Ministry of Education, is strictly prohibited. That makes an imported worksheet pack a problem regardless of its quality. The defensible approach is to work from the school's own material: the set content, the school's assessment tasks, the vocabulary and script practice the class is already doing, and the technique that sits around them. If a tutor offers you their own Social Studies curriculum, that is a reason to ask more questions, not fewer.

Who decides whether my child is entered for IGCSE Core or Extended?+

The school decides and submits the entry, because the school is the exam centre. What a family controls is the evidence brought to that conversation and the timing of it. Tiering sets a grade ceiling, so a capable candidate entered at the lower tier cannot reach the top grades however well they perform on the day. Bring mock scripts rather than impressions, and raise it before the centre's internal cut-off, which sits ahead of the board's own final entry date. For a Cambridge June series the final entry closes months ahead of the May and June papers, and for November it closes long before those papers in late October, so the centre's internal cut-off is earlier still and the statement of entry is where you read it.

Our exam timetable has a zone number printed on it - does that matter?+

It matters a great deal. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam because the wrong zone timetable was used. The zone belongs to the centre, so ask the exams officer which zone the school sits in, then check that the printed timetable at home is that version. It is a two-minute question that removes one of the few genuinely unrecoverable errors in an exam year.

We are moving from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah mid-year - which authority takes over?+

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in Ras Al Khaimah, so oversight passes from KHDA to it. The difference is not only the name on the inspection report. Ras Al Khaimah's authority, like the Sharjah Private Education Authority, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, which is a wider remit than quality oversight alone. For a mid-year move, ask the receiving school which programmes it is approved to run at your child's year group, and confirm how coursework already completed and any exam entries already submitted will be carried across.

What may a paid tutor do with an Internal Assessment draft, and where is the line?+

A tutor may teach the content the work needs, explain what a criterion is asking for, read the student's own draft and say where it is unclear or unsupported, show how data should be handled, demonstrate referencing, and ask the viva-style questions a supervisor might ask. A tutor may not supply text, rewrite a section into final form, build the argument on the student's behalf, or hand over material the student then presents as their own. The school supervisor signs the authenticity declaration and the student's name is on it, so the responsibility never moves to the tutor.

Does Dubai's school-fee freeze for 2026-27 change what private tuition costs?+

Not directly, because the two are set by different people. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. Tuition rates are set provider by provider and move with demand, particularly in the weeks before a series. What the freeze does change is the comparison: with the largest education line flat for a year, the discretionary line is easier to judge, and a published, sourced rate band is easier to argue with than a vague quote.

Nobody was available for my son's HL option subject last year - how is that handled now?+

We tell you, rather than filling the slot with a generalist. Coverage is thinnest in HL sciences and in the less common language and option combinations, and it tightens further in the weeks before a series. When nobody suitable is free at the time you want, you get the likely wait and the alternatives: a different weekly slot, a different start date, or a narrower piece of work with someone who covers part of the requirement. An IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi for a mainstream subject is usually quick; a Diploma HL option subject at 5pm on a Tuesday may not be.

Can one tutor take an IGCSE sibling and a Diploma sibling in the same week?+

Sometimes within a single subject area, but we do not treat it as the default. An IB Diploma tutor in the UAE teaching Chemistry HL and a specialist in Cambridge 0620 Extended are doing related but different jobs, with different papers, different mark schemes and different internal deadlines. Where one person genuinely covers both, we will say so. Otherwise the household gets two specialists on one shared schedule, with one point of contact and one monthly summary, so nobody is reconciling two providers against two exam calendars every term.

Start with the code on the entry sheet

If one thing from this page is worth keeping, make it the first question: which specification is my child entered for, and who owns the next deadline on it? With that answer, matching takes less guessing and a plan can be counted backwards from a date somebody has actually published. Tell us the board, the subject codes and the level for each child in the house, and we will tell you who is free, when, and what we cannot cover. The first 30-minute session is free, once per student, with no card details taken, and lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
