IB Psychology IA Help in the UAE

IB Psychology IA help, for families across the UAE, comes down to one thing above all: getting the dates right. The report carries 22 raw marks, it is marked by your child's own teacher and moderated by the IB, and it is due on a school date set months before the May papers. We teach the method, the statistics and the four criteria one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and we count the plan backwards from the deadline your IB coordinator has already published.

  • Criteria A to D mapped to the 22 marks, with the mark allocations stated
  • The inferential test chosen before data collection, not after the numbers arrive
  • Feedback on the student's own material only, never a sentence supplied for them
  • Sessions on Gulf Standard Time, including post-Iftar slots through Ramadan

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

The Psychology IA is a deadline problem before it is a psychology problem

Almost every enquiry about the Psychology Internal Assessment arrives late. A parent in Dubai or Abu Dhabi hears about the IA properly for the first time in DP2, usually in the week the school announces its submission date, and asks what can be rescued in a fortnight. The honest answer is: less than you would like. The report carries 22 raw marks, which scale to 25% of a Standard Level grade and 20% of a Higher Level one, and most of those marks are settled by decisions the student made months earlier. The last three weeks decide presentation. The nine months before them decide the mark.

So this page is built as a calendar rather than a pitch. The IB does not set the date your child hands the report in. Your school's IB coordinator does, and they set it comfortably ahead of the IB's own spring upload window so there is room to mark, standardise and send a moderation sample. Work backwards from that one published school date and the whole project turns into a sequence of small, dateable tasks: read the original study, fix the design, get the ethics form signed, recruit participants, collect data, run one statistical test, assemble a full version, and use the single permitted round of teacher feedback while it can still change something.

The second thing worth knowing is what this IA actually is in Psychology, because it is narrower than the word suggests in other subjects. It is a report on a simple experiment the student runs themselves, modelled on a published study, with one manipulated independent variable and one measured dependent variable. Correlational designs, a questionnaire on its own, naturalistic observation and anything involving participants who cannot properly consent are all outside the brief. A student who spends six weeks on a survey idea has not made a weak IA. They have made something the criteria cannot mark at all, and the only fix is to start the design again.

The third is statistics. Criterion C holds six of the 22 marks, and it is where UAE students most often meet an inferential test for the first time. The test has to match the design, be chosen before any data arrive, and be reported properly: the statistic itself, the sample size, the significance level and the direction of the hypothesis. Switching to a Mann-Whitney U after seeing that a t-test gave a dull result is the most expensive single mistake available on this task, because an examiner can see the design and the data and tell exactly what happened.

Everything here is taught, not supplied. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, starting with one trial lesson per student before any payment is taken. A tutor explains the criteria, questions the design, teaches the statistics, and reads what the student has assembled against the mark bands. A tutor does not pick the topic, fill in the ethics form, run the test, or hand over a sentence of the report. That boundary is not a marketing position. It is the difference between legitimate support and an IB malpractice investigation that lands on the candidate, not on the tutor.

At a glance

  • 22 raw marks: Criterion A 6, Criterion B 4, Criterion C 6, Criterion D 6.
  • 1,800 to 2,200 words, with the title page, references and appendices excluded.
  • The IB allots 20 teaching hours to the IA; the project occupies far longer than that.
  • One draft, one round of written teacher feedback. That is the IB's limit, not the school's.
  • The experiment must be modelled on a published study: no correlations, no lone questionnaire.
  • Ramadan now falls in February and moves earlier each year, landing inside DP2's final IA weeks.
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Psychology sits in Group 3 of the Diploma Programme, but the research skills the IA tests start much earlier in an IB school. These are the programmes a UAE family is likely to be inside when the IA becomes urgent, and what each one actually asks for.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Psychology runs at Standard and Higher Level over two years. Standard Level sits two papers and the IA; Higher Level adds Paper 3 on approaches to research and the HL extensions inside each approach. The IA is the same task at both levels: one experimental report on a study of the student's own design, modelled on published work, marked out of 22 by the teacher and moderated externally.

Most UAE DP cohorts are small. In a Dubai school with two Psychology classes the IA deadlines of forty students land in the same fortnight, so teacher feedback queues and lab-room bookings both bottleneck at once. In Al Ain, Ajman or Fujairah a student may be one of three Psychology candidates in the year, which solves the queue and creates a different problem: nobody in the room has done this before either.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Individuals and Societies in MYP 4 and 5 is where the habits that earn Criterion B marks are built, or not built: defining a variable so someone else could measure it, choosing a sample and saying why, naming a control. The MYP Personal Project is assessed against its own criteria and is not a rehearsal for the IA, but students who planned one properly recognise the shape of the work.

UAE schools running the MYP also carry the KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or Ministry of Education requirement for Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the IB framework, which compresses the timetable in MYP 4 and 5. A student arriving in DP1 from a crowded MYP week has usually had less practice at designing an investigation than the IA assumes, and that gap is best closed in DP1 Term 1, not DP2.

CPAges 16-19 · Two years

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme combines DP courses with a career-related study and its own core, including a reflective project. A CP student taking Psychology as one of their DP courses sits the same papers and submits the same IA under the same criteria and the same word limit. The reflective project is a separate assessment with separate requirements and a separate internal deadline.

The CP is offered by a small number of UAE schools, concentrated in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Where a family is weighing it, the practical point for Psychology is that nothing about the IA is relaxed: the same 22 marks, the same 2,200-word ceiling, the same single round of feedback. Two internal deadlines in one term is the real planning problem, and it is why the backwards calendar below matters more, not less.

EEAges 17-18 · DP1 Term 3 into DP2

Extended Essay in Psychology

The Extended Essay in Psychology is a 4,000-word research question answered from published literature, not from new data collected by the student. It is a different task from the IA and is marked against different criteria, with its own supervisor meetings and reflection sessions recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form.

Families in the UAE often ask whether the two can share a topic. They can share a literature base and should not share a question. The IA needs a study simple enough to replicate in a school room; the Extended Essay needs a question broad enough to argue across several studies. Where both fall due in the same DP2 term, the IA goes first, because its mark is locked by the school's internal deadline.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Psychology IA questions almost always arrive attached to a content topic, because the study a student replicates has to come from somewhere in the syllabus. These are the areas UAE students bring to IA sessions, and what each one tends to hand them.

Biological approach to behaviour

SL and HL

Localisation, neuroplasticity, neurotransmission, hormones and pheromones, and genetics. A rich source of replicable experiments only if the student picks a behavioural measure rather than a physiological one: a school cannot scan a brain, but it can measure reaction time, recall or a rated response.

Cognitive approach to behaviour

SL and HL

Models of memory, schema theory, reconstructive memory, thinking and decision-making, and the reliability of cognitive processes. This is where most workable IAs come from, because memory and attention studies produce clean two-condition designs with a measurable dependent variable inside a single lesson.

Sociocultural approach to behaviour

SL and HL

Social identity theory, social cognitive theory, stereotypes, culture and cultural dimensions, and acculturation. Tempting for IAs and frequently a trap: many classic sociocultural studies rely on deception or on manipulating self-image, which the ethical requirements rule out for a school replication.

Abnormal psychology

Option · SL and HL

Classification, prevalence, aetiologies and treatment of disorders. Almost never a safe IA source, because any design that screens, labels or distresses participants fails on ethics. It is a strong Paper 2 option and a poor experiment, and knowing that early saves a student several weeks.

Developmental psychology

Option · SL and HL

Brain development, attachment, gender identity, peer and play influences, and the role of poverty and trauma. The ethical constraint is participant age: most of the interesting work involves children, and a school IA has to use participants who can consent for themselves.

Health psychology

Option · SL and HL

Determinants of health, health problems, promoting health, and health beliefs. Workable for an IA when the manipulation is framing rather than behaviour change, for instance how a message about a risk is worded against how it is rated, which can be run in one sitting with consenting participants.

Psychology of human relationships

Option · SL and HL

Personal relationships, group dynamics, social responsibility, prosocial behaviour and bystander effects. A frequent IA source. Designs here need careful debriefing, because anything that implies a participant failed to help touches on self-image and has to be handled in the ethics plan.

Research methodology for the IA

SL and HL

Experimental designs, independent and repeated measures, operationalisation, sampling methods, extraneous and confounding variables, demand characteristics, standardised instructions and controls. This is the backbone of Criterion B and the part a student can learn in two sessions and then apply for the rest of the project.

Inferential statistics for the IA

SL and HL

Levels of measurement, descriptive statistics and measures of dispersion, significance levels, one- and two-tailed hypotheses, and the four tests a school IA realistically uses: Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed-ranks, the independent-samples t-test and the paired-samples t-test.

Paper 3: approaches to research

HL only

An unseen stimulus with three short-answer questions on method, credibility, bias, sampling and generalisation. Paper 3 and the IA teach each other: a student who can defend their own design in Criterion B can answer Paper 3 on somebody else's, and the revision overlaps almost completely.

Ethics in psychological research

SL and HL

Informed consent, right to withdraw, protection from harm, anonymity, debriefing, and the limits on deception. Examined in Paper 1 and Paper 3 and gating the IA: without a signed ethics approval from the supervising teacher, data collection cannot begin and the project stalls.

Command terms and Paper 2 technique

SL and HL

Discuss, evaluate, contrast, to what extent. Paper 2 essays are marked on how far the command term is answered rather than on how much was recalled, and the same discipline earns Criterion D marks when a student evaluates their own design instead of listing its features.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways families use Psychology IA support, matched to how far the project has actually got rather than to a package name. All of them run one-to-one over live video, with the draft, the data file and the criteria open on screen together.

Weekly IA clinic through DP1 Term 3 and DP2 Term 1

One session a week across the months when the IA is actually built. The sequence follows the backwards calendar on this page: study selection, design, ethics, recruitment, collection, analysis, assembly. The tutor's job each week is to ask the question the criteria will ask, and to send a short written note of what the student committed to doing before the next session.

  • Starts from the school's published deadline, not from the exam session
  • A written note after each session, so the plan survives a missed week
  • Design locked before recruitment, test chosen before collection
  • Pauses for mocks and for Eid without losing the thread

A four-session statistics block

For students whose design is approved and whose data are collected, but who have never run an inferential test. Four sessions cover levels of measurement, descriptive statistics and dispersion, choosing between the four tests a school IA uses, running it in a spreadsheet or in SPSS, and reporting the result in the form Criterion C expects.

  • Levels of measurement and why they decide the test
  • Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon, independent and paired t-tests
  • Significance levels and one- or two-tailed justification
  • Reporting the statistic, the sample size and the direction correctly

Pre-deadline criterion review

A short block for a student who has assembled a full version and wants to understand where it sits. The tutor reads the student's own material against the four criteria and the mark allocations, and names what each criterion is currently missing. The student makes every change themselves; nothing is edited for them, and no replacement text is supplied.

  • Criterion-by-criterion read against the 22 marks
  • Word-count rule and the appendix checklist
  • What the one permitted teacher feedback round should be spent on
  • No rewriting, no supplied paragraphs, no model report

Paper 3 and the IA together, for Higher Level

Higher Level students get the best return from treating Paper 3 and the IA as one topic. Both ask whether a method supports its conclusion. Sessions alternate between defending the student's own design and analysing unseen stimulus material, which builds the same vocabulary of sampling, bias, credibility and generalisation for both tasks.

  • Unseen stimulus technique for the three Paper 3 questions
  • The same method vocabulary applied to the student's own study
  • HL extensions in each approach mapped to Paper 2 and Paper 3
  • Runs well in DP2 Term 2, after the IA is submitted

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in the UAE

The tutors below teach IB Psychology at Standard and Higher Level and have supervised experimental reports through a full DP cycle. For an IA the useful credential is narrow: can they justify a design, defend a statistical choice, and read a draft against four criteria? Ask exactly that in the trial session.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What IB Psychology IA help can honestly include

  • Topic choice stays with the student, because Criterion D asks them to evaluate it
  • Ethics forms and standardised instructions are assessed material, not admin
  • Statistical output the student did not generate cannot be defended in Criterion C
  • One draft, one round of written teacher feedback: plan the calendar around it

Start with the literal question. Searched from the UAE, this phrase almost always means one of four situations: my child has no topic; my child has a topic the criteria cannot mark; my child has data and no idea what to do with them; or my child has a full version and three weeks left. Each needs a different first session, and only the last is really a matter of writing at all.

A tutor's job in all four is teaching. The IB's position on authenticity is not subtle: the submitted report must be the student's own work, and the supervising teacher may give advice on one draft. Everything beyond that is malpractice. The practical consequence is that a useful IA session looks like a seminar, not a service. The tutor asks why the design controls what it claims to control, what the operational definition of the dependent variable is, how the sample was recruited, and which test the data will need once they exist.

This matters practically as much as ethically. The IB checks authenticity at the point of moderation, and the penalty for submitted work that is not the candidate's own falls on the candidate, where it costs the diploma rather than a single subject grade. Any site offering to hand over a finished report is selling a family a risk it has not priced. Our line is plain: we teach method, criteria and statistics, we read what the student has already assembled, and we say where it sits against the mark bands. Nothing leaves a session that the student did not make.

The table below is the boundary we teach to, stage by stage. It is worth reading with your child rather than instead of them, because the commonest honesty failures on this task are not deliberate. A student who accepts a ready-made design from a well-meaning adult, or who lets a relative run the statistics, has usually not understood that those are the assessed parts.

The Psychology IA counted backwards from the May session

Here is the most useful thing on this page. Take the date your school has published for final IA submission and count backwards in weeks. Not from the May examination window, which has nothing to do with the IA. Not from the IB's own upload window, which your coordinator has already padded. From the school date. Every milestone in the table below sits a fixed distance from that one number, and each has a failure mode that costs weeks rather than days.

Two of these milestones are outside the student's control, which is exactly why they have to be scheduled early. Ethics approval depends on a teacher reading and signing a form, and teachers read forms in batches. The one permitted round of written feedback depends on a marking queue, which in a large Dubai department with a full Psychology cohort can run a fortnight long. A student who has a complete version eight weeks out gets feedback they can still act on. A student who gets there at three weeks out gets a tick and a kind sentence.

Data collection is the other reliable disaster. A school experiment needs participants who turn up, in a room that is free, during a period nobody else needs. In the UAE that means negotiating with a timetable that already carries Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the IB courses. If the first attempt fails because of a fire drill, a sports fixture or an inter-school event, the next genuinely free window is often three weeks away. Collect early enough that one failure is survivable, and treat the second attempt as part of the plan rather than as bad luck.

One note on dates. No specific IB session or results date appears anywhere on this page, because the IB publishes those itself and they change. Confirm every date with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org before planning around it. What does not change is the ordering, and the ordering is what the table gives you.

The 22 marks, criterion by criterion

The Psychology IA is marked out of 22 against four criteria, and the mark allocations are public. Criterion A, the introduction, carries six marks. Criterion B, exploration, carries four. Criterion C, analysis, carries six. Criterion D, evaluation, carries six. Both Standard and Higher Level students submit the same task against the same criteria; the only difference is what the mark is worth in the final grade, 25% at SL and 20% at HL.

Criterion A is not a literature review. It asks for the published study the investigation is based on, the theory or model behind it, and a clearly stated aim with hypotheses whose direction is explicit. Most lost marks here come from a student summarising a theory accurately and then never tying it to the specific manipulation they chose. If the reader cannot see why this independent variable should move this dependent variable according to that theory, the marks are gone whatever else is on the page.

Criterion B is the smallest band and the most mechanically earned. It wants the design named and justified, the sampling technique named and justified, and the controls and ethical considerations stated rather than listed. Criterion C is where UAE students most often slip: descriptive statistics with a measure of dispersion, a graph that shows something, and an inferential test whose choice is justified against the design and the level of measurement. Criterion D then asks for a discussion against the original study, limitations specific to this design, and modifications that would actually address them.

Read the table with your child's draft open. The fourth column is not a list of style complaints; each line is a mark band a real report has fallen out of, and almost all of them are fixable in one session if there is still time to fix anything.

04

Choosing the statistical test before the data exist

  • Decide the test at the design stage and write the justification then, while the reasoning is fresh
  • Record the level of measurement for the dependent variable before collecting anything
  • Report the statistic, the sample size, the significance level and the tail of the hypothesis
  • A non-significant result discussed well outscores a significant one asserted badly

The order of operations is the whole lesson. A student decides the design, which decides the level of measurement, which decides the inferential test, which decides what has to be recorded during collection. Doing it the other way round, collecting first and then looking for a test that fits, produces reports where the test is defensible by accident and indefensible in writing. An examiner reading Criterion C can see which order it happened in.

There are only four tests a school Psychology IA realistically needs, plus one it should avoid. Two conditions with different participants and ordinal or non-normal data takes a Mann-Whitney U. The same participants in both conditions with ordinal data takes a Wilcoxon signed-ranks test. Interval data that is roughly normal takes an independent-samples t-test for separate groups or a paired-samples t-test for the same participants twice. A chi-square test of independence handles frequency counts, which is rarer in an experimental IA because it usually signals that the dependent variable was never properly measured.

Reporting is a separate skill from running the test. The criterion wants the statistic itself, the sample size, the significance level, whether the hypothesis was one- or two-tailed, and a sentence that states what the result means for the hypothesis rather than for the theory. A result that fails to reach significance is not a weak IA. Students lose far more marks pretending an effect exists than they ever lose reporting honestly that it did not, because Criterion D rewards exactly that discussion.

Ethics, consent and finding twenty participants in a UAE school

  • Teacher approval of the ethics plan is what releases data collection, and it queues
  • Participants must be able to consent for themselves; that shapes the whole topic choice
  • Consent form, instructions, debriefing script and raw data all belong in the appendices
  • No screening for disorders, no induced distress, no deception beyond the trivial
  • Book the room and the participants before the design is prettied up, not after

Ethics is the gate, not the garnish. Data collection cannot begin until the supervising teacher has approved the plan, and the approval covers how participants are recruited, what they are told, what they consent to, how they can withdraw, how their data are anonymised, and what the debriefing says. Those documents go into the appendices and are read as part of Criterion B. A student who treats the form as paperwork ends up with four marks hanging on a page they filled in at speed.

Participant choice is where UAE students hit the real constraint. The pool has to be people who can give informed consent for themselves, which in practice means older students, staff or adults in the family's own network. That rules out most of the developmental psychology topics students find interesting, and it rules out anything that screens for a disorder, measures distress, or leaves a participant feeling they performed badly. A design that cannot be run ethically is not a design, however elegant the hypothesis.

Then there is simple logistics. Twenty to thirty participants, in two conditions, in a free room, during a period when none of them has a lesson. In a small Al Ain or Fujairah sixth form that arithmetic is tight enough that the design has to bend to the pool rather than the other way round. In a large Dubai school the pool exists but competes with every other DP2 student collecting data in the same fortnight. Either way, recruitment is a scheduling task that belongs sixteen weeks out, not a thing that happens the week before analysis.

06

Where Psychology IA marks actually leak

  • Hypotheses stated with direction, decided before any data arrive
  • Operational definitions another person could follow without asking a question
  • Every mean reported with a measure of dispersion beside it
  • Limitations that could only be written about this study, not any study
  • Appendices complete: consent, instructions, debriefing, raw data, calculations

Most IAs that come to us at six weeks out are not badly written. They are structurally short of two or three specific things, and the same ones recur across schools and emirates. The first is a hypothesis without direction. A student writes that there will be a difference, then runs a one-tailed test, and Criterion C unravels because the test no longer matches what was predicted. Directionality is a sentence, and it has to be decided before collection.

The second is an operational definition that is not operational. Measuring recall is fine; measuring memory is not. If another person could not take the written procedure and produce comparable numbers, the definition is not doing its job, and the consequences land in Criterion B and again in Criterion D when the student tries to evaluate reliability. The third is a results section that reports a mean and nothing else. A mean without a standard deviation or an interquartile range tells a marker nothing about whether the difference is worth discussing.

The fourth is evaluation by template. Small sample, lack of generalisability, demand characteristics, in that order, on thousands of reports. Six marks sit in Criterion D and they are awarded for limitations specific to this design and modifications that would plausibly fix them. If the limitation would read identically on any other IA in the year group, it is not earning anything. The fifth is the word count: going past 2,200 words is a self-inflicted loss, and it is almost always the introduction that caused it.

07

What Psychology IA support costs in the UAE market

Nobody ranking for this search publishes a rate in dirhams, so here is the market as it stands, attributed. These are other providers' published figures and market survey bands, not IB Gram prices. They are useful because they tell you what a quote should look like before you receive one, and because the spread is wide enough that a family can pay three times the going rate for the same hour of teaching.

At the bottom, group revision and budget online platforms publish rates from AED 33 to AED 150 an hour. Those sessions teach content, not IA method, and for a student stuck on a repeated-measures design they are the wrong purchase at any price. A qualified subject tutor working online sits roughly between AED 150 and AED 300, which is where most IB Psychology teaching happens. A named IB or IGCSE specialist runs from about AED 200 to AED 450 and upward, and premium examiner-positioned tutors are advertised as high as AED 650 an hour.

Monthly packages advertised in this market include online blocks around AED 799 a month for eight sessions and in-home blocks of AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour visits. Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost table puts weekly one-hour tutoring at AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. For context, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, so the tutoring line in a family budget is the one that moved.

What we do instead of a price list: one trial lesson per student before any payment, then a quote for the specific block of work the IA actually needs. A statistics block is four sessions. A criterion review before a deadline is usually two. A weekly clinic from DP1 Term 3 is a different conversation, and it should be priced as one.

Online support against an in-home IA tutor in the UAE

Parents searching for IA help in the UAE usually start by looking for somebody who will sit at the dining table. That is a reasonable instinct and it is worth answering honestly rather than deflecting. A visiting tutor in Dubai or Abu Dhabi charges between AED 180 and AED 500 an hour according to published market figures, and a meaningful part of that is travel: crossing Dubai at five in the afternoon can take forty minutes each way, and a tutor who spends ninety minutes travelling for a sixty-minute lesson prices that in.

IB Gram delivers UAE tutoring as one-to-one online tuition over live video. Home visits are a service we run in India, not here, and no sentence on this site should suggest otherwise. The case for online on this particular task is unusually strong, because an IA is document work. The report, the spreadsheet of raw data, the statistical output and the IB criteria all need to be visible at once, and two people sharing a screen can do that better than two people sharing one printed copy.

The second argument is the tutor pool. IB Psychology with confident inferential statistics is a narrow specialism, and the number of people holding it who also happen to live within a drivable radius of Khalifa City or Al Hamra is small. Online removes the radius from the selection criteria entirely. The third is the shape of IA crunch weeks: a student six days from a deadline needs a 7am slot or a 10pm one, and those exist in a calendar but not on a driving route.

There is one honest point against. A student who will not open a laptop without being watched does better with somebody in the room, and for that family a visiting tutor is the right answer even at the higher rate. We would rather say so than take the booking.

Ramadan, Eid and the UAE school year around the IA

The IA calendar runs through a UAE school year that has its own shape, and two parts of it reliably eat working weeks. Ramadan now falls in February and moves about eleven days earlier each year, which puts it squarely inside the final stretch of DP2 for the current cycle. School days are shortened across UAE schools for the month, which removes exactly the free periods a student was going to use for data collection, and the Eid Al Fitr break removes another working week straight afterwards.

The practical answer is to move work, not to lose it. Sessions shift to post-Iftar slots, which in the UAE means a tutor working on Gulf Standard Time after about eight in the evening. The tasks that survive a shortened day are reading, design, statistics and assembly. The task that does not survive is data collection, because it needs other people's free periods, and during Ramadan there are fewer of them. So collection belongs before the month starts, and the calendar earlier on this page is built on that assumption.

The other compression is the DP2 mock window, which in most UAE schools sits in the winter term and swallows two to three weeks of a student's attention. Mocks are useful and should not be sacrificed to the IA, which is another argument for having a complete version assembled before them. A student who finishes mocks and then has only teacher feedback left to act on is in a good position. A student who finishes mocks and still has to collect data is in trouble, and no amount of tutoring buys back those weeks.

Who sets what: your school, your emirate and the IB

Three different authorities touch a UAE student's IA, and families routinely attribute decisions to the wrong one. The IB owns the task: the criteria, the 22 marks, the word limit, the one-draft feedback rule and the moderation sample. Your school owns the internal deadline, the ethics approval process, the room you collect data in and the marking queue. The emirate's regulator owns the school, not the assessment, and that distinction saves a lot of misdirected email.

The regulator map is worth knowing anyway. Dubai's private schools answer to KHDA, which oversees the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain answer to ADEK, which supervises licensing and accreditation. Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, both of which approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah come under the federal Ministry of Education. None of them marks an IA, and none of them can extend a deadline.

One regulator decision does affect tutoring directly. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you. Abu Dhabi adds a professional-ethics rule reported to bar school staff from paid tutoring of students at their own school, which is why your child's Psychology teacher cannot be the paid IA tutor. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform and holds no approval, licence or partnership from any of these bodies.

MoE equivalency sits in the same category: a real process, not ours to perform. For British-curriculum students the published requirement is five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one accredited A-Level at grade E or two AS-Levels at the same grade. For the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing, and mathematics by at least 450 in SAT Math. No IB points threshold is published in that source, so we publish none; verify any IB figure on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate.

Where we tutor

Psychology IA support across the seven emirates

Lessons are delivered online, so where a family lives changes the schedule and the school context rather than the availability of a tutor. What does change by emirate is which regulator licenses the school, how large the Psychology cohort is, and how hard it is to find twenty willing participants.

Dubai

Dubai's private sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 curricula, with the International Baccalaureate accounting for 7% of enrolment. Large Psychology cohorts mean long teacher feedback queues and competition for a free room to collect data in.

Abu Dhabi

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools here, and its professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students at their own school. So the teacher who sets your child's IA deadline and marks the report cannot also be the paid tutor coaching it.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK, with fewer DP Psychology cohorts than the coast. A student may be one of three candidates in the year, which removes the feedback queue but also removes the peer group. Recruiting twenty participants from a small sixth form takes planning, not luck.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Many Sharjah families attend school in Dubai, so the IA deadline that matters is the one set by the school, not the one set where they sleep.

Ajman

The federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman. The IB cohort is small, and a Psychology specialist who can argue about a repeated-measures design is unlikely to live within driving distance. Online is not a compromise here; it is the only route to the specialism.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in Ras Al Khaimah and approves curricula and assessment methods alongside fees. For a family here, an evening video slot replaces a ninety-minute drive each way to a Dubai tutor, and that is the difference between weekly sessions and monthly ones.

Fujairah

Supervised by the Ministry of Education, on the other side of the Hajar mountains from the main IB belt. East-coast DP students are the clearest case for online delivery: nothing about the IA requires a room, and everything about it requires a specialist.

Umm Al Quwain

The smallest private sector in the country, also under the Ministry of Education. Psychology candidates here are rare enough that the practical question is usually not which tutor but which published study can realistically be replicated with the participant pool actually available.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai IB Diploma schools

The largest DP Psychology cohorts in the country sit here, which is why internal IA deadlines in Dubai are typically earlier than elsewhere: a department marking forty reports needs more runway before the moderation sample goes out. Students from these schools arrive at sessions with a departmental IA booklet, and the first job is reading it against the IB criteria.

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Cohorts are smaller and feedback is usually faster, but participant recruitment is harder and the ADEK ethics position means the subject teacher cannot double as the paid tutor. Students from these schools most often arrive with a design already approved and a statistics problem they did not see coming.

Sharjah and the northern emirates

A thinner IB belt regulated by SPEA, the RAK Department of Knowledge and the Ministry of Education depending on the emirate. Psychology is not offered in every school here, so some candidates are taught in a class of four by a teacher covering two Group 3 subjects, and external method support carries more weight than it would in a large Dubai department.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the four facts that matter

Subject and level, the school's published IA deadline, where the project has actually reached, and which emirate the school is in. Those four lines are enough to say whether the problem is a design problem, a statistics problem or a calendar problem, and they decide what the first session is spent on.

  2. 02

One trial lesson, read against the criteria

One trial lesson per student, before any payment. The tutor reads whatever exists, whether that is a title or a full version, against the four criteria and the mark allocations, and names the two things that would move the mark most. You get that assessment whether or not you book anything further.

  3. 03

A plan counted backwards from the school date

Not a package. A list of milestones with weeks attached, taken from the backwards calendar on this page and adjusted to your school's deadline, Ramadan and the mock window. It names which milestones depend on a teacher, because those are the ones that have to be requested early rather than chased late.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with a written note after each

Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. After each one the tutor sends a short note of what was covered and what the student committed to before the next session. That note is what keeps the project alive through a missed week, a travel trip or an exam fortnight.

  5. 05

If no Psychology specialist is free

Sometimes there is no IB Psychology tutor with the right statistics background available in the hours a family needs. We say so and offer the nearest honest alternative: a research-methods specialist for the design and analysis, a later start date, or a recommendation to look elsewhere. We would rather lose the booking than fill it badly.

  6. 06

Stop when the work is done

An IA block ends at submission. Higher Level students usually continue into Paper 3 because the method vocabulary transfers directly; Standard Level students often stop and come back for Paper 2 technique closer to the session. Nothing renews automatically and nothing is bundled into a longer commitment than the task needs.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The calendar is the actual product

Most IA failures are scheduling failures wearing a subject costume. A plan counted backwards from the school's own date, with the teacher-dependent milestones flagged, prevents more lost marks than any amount of last-fortnight polishing. It is the first thing we build and the thing we revisit every session.

Criteria and mark allocations, not impressions

Six marks for the introduction, four for exploration, six for analysis, six for evaluation. Feedback that does not name a criterion and a band is decoration. Every session ends with the student able to say which criterion they worked on and what it is currently missing.

Statistics taught before the data arrive

The test follows the design, and the design follows the research question. Teaching inferential statistics at the design stage costs two sessions and protects six marks. Teaching it after collection means fitting a test to numbers that were never recorded with any test in mind.

A hard line on whose work it is

We teach, question and give feedback on the student's own material. We do not choose topics, sign ethics forms, run tests or supply text. That boundary is published here so a family can hold us to it, and because a report that is not the candidate's own puts the whole diploma at risk.

Independent, and saying so

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, and no school named on this page is a client or partner. Anyone claiming regulator approval for tutoring is worth a second question.

Built for Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are scheduled on UAE time, including early-morning and late-evening slots in deadline weeks and post-Iftar slots through Ramadan. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, so a family in Fujairah gets the same tutor availability as a family in Jumeirah.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

How long should an IB Psychology IA be?+

The report runs to between 1,800 and 2,200 words. The title page, the reference list and the appendices sit outside that count, which means the raw data, consent form, standardised instructions, debriefing script and statistical calculations do not eat into it. Going past the upper limit is a mechanical loss of marks rather than a judgement call, and in practice it is nearly always the introduction that caused it: three studies summarised where one was needed. If a draft is 2,600 words, cut Criterion A first and check that every sentence there connects the theory to the specific variable being manipulated.

How many marks is the Psychology IA worth, and how are they split?+

Twenty-two raw marks across four criteria: Criterion A, introduction, six marks; Criterion B, exploration, four; Criterion C, analysis, six; Criterion D, evaluation, six. That total is scaled to 25% of the final grade at Standard Level and 20% at Higher Level, where Paper 3 takes a share of the weighting instead. Standard and Higher Level students submit the same task against the same criteria, so there is no easier version. Knowing the split changes how a student spends their last fortnight: ten of the twenty-two marks sit in analysis and evaluation, which are the two sections most often thinnest.

Which inferential test does my child need for their Psychology IA?+

It follows from the design, so it should be decided before any data are collected. Two separate groups with ordinal or skewed scores points to a Mann-Whitney U. The same participants measured twice with ordinal data points to a Wilcoxon signed-ranks test. Interval data that is roughly normal takes an independent-samples t-test for separate groups or a paired-samples t-test for repeated measures. Frequency counts take a chi-square test of independence, though that usually signals a dependent variable that was never properly measured. The justification matters as much as the choice, because Criterion C marks the reasoning.

Can a tutor help with the Psychology IA without breaking IB academic honesty rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can teach research methods, explain the criteria and their mark allocations, question a design, teach statistics, and read what the student has already assembled and say where it sits against the bands. A tutor cannot choose the topic, draft the ethics form, write the standardised instructions, run the statistical test, or supply text for the report. The submitted work has to be the candidate's own, and the supervising teacher may give advice on one draft. Anything beyond that is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student's diploma.

When should a UAE student actually start their Psychology IA?+

Thirty weeks before the school's submission date, which for most UAE schools means DP1's final term. That sounds early until you count the dependencies: a published study has to be read in full, a design fixed, an ethics form approved by a teacher who reads forms in batches, participants recruited around a timetable, and data collected in a room that is free. Each of those can slip by a fortnight without anyone being careless. Students who start in DP2 are not doomed, but they are choosing to run the project without any slack at all.

Who can be a participant in a school Psychology experiment in the UAE?+

People who can give informed consent for themselves, which in practice means older students, staff and adults in the family's own network. That constraint rules out most developmental psychology topics and anything that screens for a disorder, induces distress, or leaves a participant feeling they performed badly. The approved plan has to cover recruitment, what participants are told, the right to withdraw, anonymisation and the debriefing. In a small sixth form in Al Ain or Fujairah the pool is the binding constraint on the whole design, so identify it before falling in love with a hypothesis.

What happens if the Psychology IA goes over 2,200 words?+

It costs marks, and it is the most avoidable loss on the task. Examiners work to the published limit, so material beyond it cannot reliably be credited, and a student who has put their best evaluation in the final paragraph can lose it entirely. The fix is almost always structural rather than editorial. Trim the introduction to the one published study the investigation is based on and the theory that links it to the manipulation. Move anything procedural into the appendices, where the word count does not reach. Then recount before submission, not after.

Does the Psychology IA have to be based on a published study?+

Yes. The task is a simple experiment modelled on published work, with one manipulated independent variable and one measured dependent variable. That rules out correlational designs, a questionnaire on its own, naturalistic observation and purely qualitative approaches, however interesting the question. It also makes study selection the single highest-leverage decision in the project: a published study that cannot be replicated in a school room with consenting adult participants will generate weeks of effort and no markable data. Read the original paper in full before committing, not the abstract and not a textbook summary of it.

How many drafts of the IA can my child's teacher read?+

One. The supervising teacher may give advice on a single draft, and that advice has to be written rather than a conversation that leaves no record. This one rule should shape the entire calendar. A student who assembles a complete version eight weeks before the deadline gets feedback with time to act on it. A student who gets there three weeks out gets a tick. It also explains why external method support is legitimate and useful: a tutor can question a design in October without spending the one feedback round the IB allows.

What does Criterion B, exploration, actually ask for?+

Four marks for design choices defended rather than described. The marker wants the experimental design named and justified against the research question, the sampling technique named and justified, the controls identified, and the ethical considerations stated in a way that shows they shaped the procedure. The commonest loss is a report that names a repeated-measures design and never says why that design suits this manipulation, or that lists ethics as a checklist of five words. It is the smallest band on the task and the most mechanically earned, which makes it the cheapest four marks available.

What does Psychology IA support cost in the UAE market?+

Published rates in this market run from about AED 33 to 150 an hour for budget online platforms and group revision, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online, AED 200 to 450 and upward for a named IB specialist, and AED 180 to 500 for a visiting tutor where travel sits inside the fee. Premium examiner-positioned tutors are advertised as high as AED 650. Those are other providers' figures, not ours. We quote for the specific block of work after one trial lesson, because a statistics block and a two-year clinic are not the same purchase.

Does Ramadan change the IA timetable for UAE students?+

It changes what is possible, so it should change the plan. Ramadan currently falls in February and moves roughly eleven days earlier each year, which places it inside the final IA stretch for DP2 students. School days are shortened across the country, so the free periods a student intended to use for data collection largely disappear, and the Eid Al Fitr break removes another working week. Reading, design, statistics and assembly all survive a shortened day and move comfortably to post-Iftar sessions. Data collection does not, so it belongs before the month begins.

Is online support as useful as sitting with a tutor in Dubai for IA work?+

For this task it is usually better, and the reason is practical rather than ideological. An IA is document work: the report, the raw data, the statistical output and the IB criteria all need to be visible at the same moment, which two people sharing a screen manage more easily than two people sharing a printout. Online also removes the drivable radius from tutor selection, and IB Psychology with confident inferential statistics is a narrow specialism. The honest exception is a student who will not work without somebody physically present. For that family, a visiting tutor is the right answer.

Can my child's own Psychology teacher be their paid IA tutor?+

Not in Abu Dhabi, and it is a poor idea anywhere. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported to bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also addresses serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Beyond the rules, the teacher who will mark the report and sign the ethics form should not also be paid to coach it. Verify the current position with the school before arranging anything.

Do private tutors in the UAE need a permit, and how do I check?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, via its app, website and e-services. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure quoted at you with scepticism. Ask a tutor directly whether they hold one.

Does the Psychology IA mark affect UAE certificate equivalency?+

Equivalency is assessed on the final certificate, not on a single internal assessment, so the IA matters only through the grade it helps produce. For the British track the Ministry of Education's published requirement is five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A-Level at grade E or two AS-Levels. No IB points threshold appears in that published source, so we quote none. Check the current IB requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate before planning around any number.

That single exercise tells you whether this is a design conversation, a statistics conversation or a salvage operation, and it costs nothing. Then send us the four facts: subject, level, that deadline, and where the project has reached. One trial lesson per student, read against the four criteria, before any payment. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, anywhere in the UAE.
