IB Maths Tutor in Dubai Sports City

An IB maths tutor in Dubai Sports City is usually wanted at one of three moments: the term the Analysis or Applications decision has to be made, the term the exploration is due, and the fortnight after a mock paper comes back. This page is organised around those moments. IB Gram matches Sports City, Victory Heights and Motor City students with Mathematics AA and AI specialists teaching live online in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Separate specialists for Analysis and Approaches and for Applications and Interpretation
  • Exploration work planned backwards from the school's own deadline
  • Live one-to-one online lessons in Gulf Standard Time
  • Written target agreed in session one, reviewed at session four

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Sports City

Three moments when maths help is actually needed

IB mathematics generates more tutoring requests in Dubai than any other Diploma subject, and almost all of them arrive at one of three points in the calendar. The first is late in Year 11, when a student has to choose between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, and between Higher and Standard Level, without much information about what either feels like. The second is the term the exploration is due. The third is the fortnight after the first full paper comes back marked.

Those three moments need different work. The route decision is a diagnostic question: what does this student's algebraic fluency actually look like, and what do the universities they are considering require? The exploration is a process problem with a published set of criteria and a school-set deadline. The mock aftermath is a mark-recovery problem, and the useful first step is sorting lost marks by cause rather than by topic.

Treating all three as the same thing — a weekly maths hour — is how families spend two years and arrive at the same grade. A weekly hour with no target drifts towards whatever the student has homework on, which is reactive by design. A block with a stated objective and a review at four sessions can be judged, and if it is not working it can be changed while there is still time to change it.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition live, one to one and online over video in Gulf Standard Time. No tutor is sent to a Sports City address, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For mathematics the online format has a specific advantage: the work is written, so a shared screen with the student's own working visible line by line is a better surface than a dining table where the tutor reads the page upside down.

It also widens the pool in a way that matters at Higher Level. A Sports City cohort may have a handful of students taking Analysis at Higher Level in a given year, and the number of local tutors who have taught Paper 3 is smaller still. Matching by route and level rather than by drive time is the difference between a specialist and a capable generalist.

What follows is a calendar for IB mathematics: the route decision and when it closes, the exploration counted backwards from the school deadline, when each paper should first be sat to time, what two Diploma years of maths look like term by term, and what the market charges at each stage. The section on first timed sittings is the one most families wish they had read a year earlier, because the order in which a student meets their papers is decided by default rather than on purpose, and the default is the expensive option.

Mathematics enquiries from this part of Dubailand arrive from three stages, and the calendar pressure is different at each. The route decision in the first of them shapes everything that follows.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Mathematics

Every Diploma student takes one mathematics course: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Higher or Standard Level. Both carry two written papers at Standard Level and three at Higher, plus the exploration, which is internally assessed against published criteria and moderated. The exploration is the one component completed in slow time rather than under invigilation.

Dubai Diploma students sit the May session, so the exploration deadline usually falls in the middle of the second year and the mock window in the term before the papers. Sports City families most often enquire after mock results, which leaves a workable but tight block. Enquiring with the mock itself as the target produces a better number.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Mathematics

Assessed against four criteria, each marked out of 8 and converted by published boundaries, with standard and extended routes in the later years. Because assessment is criterion-referenced and continuous, a student can hold a mid-range grade for two years while algebraic manipulation stays weak, and nothing in the reporting makes that visible.

The decision point that matters is the end of MYP 4, which leaves a full year to build manipulation before the Diploma route choice has to be made. Families in Town Square and Mudon tend to act at the end of MYP 5 instead, by which point the choice is being made around a weakness rather than after fixing it.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and Additional Mathematics into the Diploma

Students arriving at the Diploma from Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1 meet a step in abstraction rather than in topic coverage. Those who also took Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics have usually met calculus, function notation and trigonometric identities already, and find the first term of Analysis materially easier.

Several Sports City families move a child between schools at 16, which means meeting an unfamiliar maths department's expectations at the same time as the route choice. A summer bridging block aimed at manipulation and function notation is the standard request, and six sessions usually covers it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics at IB is one subject with four distinct versions, and a tutoring plan that ignores which one a student is on will miss. These are the routes, levels and the components around them.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

Higher Level

Proof, calculus, complex numbers, series and algebraic manipulation at depth, assessed across three papers including the extended problem-solving Paper 3. The reliable losses are reasoning steps omitted between statement and conclusion, and calculator-obtained results presented without supporting algebra.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL

Standard Level

The same algebraic and calculus spine at reduced depth across two papers. Differentiation and integration technique, and the non-calculator paper, decide most grades. Students who arrive without fluent manipulation spend the first year paying for it in every topic.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL

Higher Level

Modelling, statistics, matrices and graph theory with the graphic display calculator central throughout, including a Paper 3 built on investigation tasks. Marks are lost by producing an output and not interpreting it: a regression line with no comment, a test with no conclusion in context.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL

Standard Level

Modelling, functions, statistics and probability across two calculator-permitted papers. The common error is treating the calculator as the answer rather than the tool. Contextual sentences earn marks here that pure computation does not, which surprises students moving from IGCSE.

The mathematical exploration

Both routes, both levels

An individual piece of mathematical writing marked against published criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. Roughly half the available marks are for process and communication rather than for the mathematics itself.

Paper 1

AA without calculator; AI with

Short and extended response questions across the syllabus. On the Analysis route the absence of a calculator exposes manipulation weaknesses that are invisible in class. First sitting to time should happen far earlier than most students manage.

Paper 2

Both routes, calculator permitted

Technology-permitted problem solving. Marks go missing to calculator syntax errors and to answers given to the wrong accuracy. Having the exact model the school uses set up correctly is worth a session on its own.

Paper 3

Higher Level only

Two extended problem-solving or modelling tasks that lead a student through unfamiliar mathematics. Almost nobody has attempted one to time before their first mock, which is why Paper 3 produces the sharpest drop in a Higher Level student's mock profile.

Graphic display calculator technique

Both routes

Regression, distributions, solvers, graphing and numerical methods on the specific model the school uses. Students lose marks to syntax rather than to mathematics, and to not knowing which function produces the value the question wants.

Bridging work from IGCSE and MYP

Pre-Diploma

Rearrangement, indices, surds, function notation and the beginnings of differentiation. The narrowest and highest-return block available, best taken in the summer before the Diploma begins rather than in the first term alongside new content.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three maths-specific formats, all delivered live online and one to one. The right one depends entirely on which of the three calendar moments a family is in.

Route decision diagnostic

Two sessions late in the pre-Diploma year: one on algebraic fluency and manipulation under non-calculator conditions, one on the demands of each route against the student's intended degree subjects. Ends with a written recommendation the family can take to the school.

  • Non-calculator manipulation assessed, not estimated
  • University prerequisites checked against named admissions pages
  • Written recommendation covering route and level

Exploration process block

Six to eight sessions timed backwards from the school deadline, covering topic selection, the mathematics required, data where relevant, and criterion-by-criterion self-review. The tutor teaches the criteria and gives feedback on the student's own writing, and produces no part of the submission.

  • Topic chosen for tractable mathematics, not for interest alone
  • Criteria taught by name with their mark ceilings
  • Feedback on the student's own draft; no drafting on their behalf

Paper-by-paper recovery block

Eight sessions after a mock, each built on a single paper type under timed conditions and marked immediately. For Higher Level students this usually means Paper 3 gets attention it has never had, since most students meet it first in the mock itself.

  • One paper type per session, sat to time
  • Lost marks sorted by cause and logged across weeks
  • Calculator setup corrected on the school's own model

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Sports City

01

What an IB maths tutor in Dubai Sports City is asked to fix

  • Four distinct requests: route choice, manipulation, exploration, paper marks
  • Classwork strong and paper marks weak is a technique problem
  • The route decision has university consequences two years later
  • Lessons are live online; no home visits anywhere in the UAE

An IB maths tutor in Dubai Sports City is asked for one of four things, and they are not interchangeable. A route decision before the Diploma begins. Algebraic manipulation that was never fluent. An exploration with a deadline attached. Or paper marks that are lower than the student's classwork suggests they should be. IB Gram provides that teaching live online, one to one, in Gulf Standard Time; no tutor is sent to a Sports City address and in-home visiting runs only in India.

The fourth of those is the most common and the most misdiagnosed. A student who understands the mathematics in class and scores poorly on papers has a technique problem, not a knowledge problem, and more teaching will not change it. What changes it is sitting papers to time, marking them against the published scheme, and naming the specific reason each mark was withheld — a missing reasoning line, a calculator result with no supporting algebra, an accuracy error carried forward.

The first is the most consequential and the least discussed. The Analysis and Applications routes lead to different places, and some degree programmes in engineering, mathematics, physics and economics expect the Analysis route specifically. A student who chooses on comfort in Year 11 and discovers the prerequisite in Year 13 has a problem that no amount of tutoring solves.

For mathematics, the online format earns its place rather than merely being acceptable. The work is written, so what matters is that the tutor can see the student's working appear line by line and interrupt at the point a step is skipped. A shared screen does that better than sitting across a table reading a page sideways, and the session can be rewatched when the student repeats the same error a fortnight later.

02

Analysis or Applications, and when the decision closes

The choice between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation is made in the pre-Diploma year, usually alongside the rest of the subject selection, and it is frequently made on the wrong evidence. Students choose Applications because it sounds gentler, or Analysis because it sounds more respectable, and neither is a reason. The courses differ in content, in assessment style and in what they prepare a student for.

Analysis is the algebraic and calculus route, with proof and manipulation carrying the grade and a non-calculator paper that exposes any weakness in handling expressions. Applications is modelling and statistics led, with the graphic display calculator permitted throughout and marks attached to interpreting results in a real context. Neither is easy. The failure mode differs: Analysis punishes weak manipulation, Applications punishes students who produce outputs without commentary.

The decision rule that works is two-part. First, assess manipulation honestly under non-calculator conditions, because that single piece of evidence predicts Analysis performance better than any school report. Second, check the admissions pages of the specific universities and courses the student is considering, because prerequisites are set by course and change. Doing both takes two sessions and closes the question properly.

The deadline is the school's option-form date, and once the course is running a change is difficult and sometimes impossible. A family in Sports City or Arabian Ranches thinking about this should have the conversation a term before the form, not the week of it. The table below sets the two routes against each other on the dimensions that actually decide the choice.

03

The exploration, counted backwards from the school deadline

The mathematical exploration is the component most improvable by planning, because its deadline is known in advance, its criteria are published, and roughly half of its marks are for process and communication rather than for the mathematics. Students who leave it late lose marks on criteria they could have satisfied with a fortnight's thought.

Counted backwards, the schedule is clear. The final week is for formatting, referencing and a last criterion check, and no mathematics should be happening then. The fortnight before that is for reflection and for writing the commentary that connects the mathematics to the question. Before that sits the mathematics itself, and before that the data or the worked examples. The topic choice sits at the very start and is the decision that determines whether the rest is possible.

Topic choice is where tutoring earns most. Students pick topics they find interesting and then discover the mathematics is either trivial or beyond them. The test is whether there is mathematics at the level of their course that can be done properly in the space available, and that is a judgement a specialist makes in one conversation. A tractable topic chosen in week one is worth more than four extra sessions in week eight.

The boundary on this work is firm and it is an IB rule rather than a preference. A tutor teaches the criteria, questions the method, discusses whether the mathematics is sound, and gives feedback on what the student has written. A tutor does not write, complete or produce any part of the exploration. Work a student did not produce becomes a malpractice finding against the student, and the deadline pressure does not change that.

When each paper should first be sat to time

Most Diploma students in Dubai meet their papers in the wrong order and far too late. They do plenty of exercises, some past-paper questions, and then encounter a full paper under timed conditions for the first time in a mock. The mock then measures timing, stamina and question-order judgement as much as mathematics, and the grade reads as a content failure when it is not.

A better schedule is to sit each paper type to time long before it matters, accept that the first attempt will be poor, and treat the result as information. A first full Paper 1 in the back half of the first Diploma year costs ninety minutes of a weekend and tells a family more than a term of reports. For Higher Level students the priority is Paper 3, because it is the paper nobody has practised and the one that drops hardest in a mock.

Calculator setup belongs in this schedule too. Students lose marks to the syntax of their own machine rather than to mathematics: a regression run correctly but read from the wrong field, a distribution function given the arguments in the wrong order, an answer left in a display format the question did not ask for. One session on the specific model the school uses removes a recurring category of loss.

The table sets out a workable sequence. It assumes a May session and should be adjusted to the student's own school calendar, which is the document that governs mock windows and internal deadlines. No IB session or results dates appear here because none could be verified from the IB directly; confirm every one with the school's Diploma coordinator.

Two years of Diploma maths, term by term

  • Year one, term one: manipulation fluency, and nothing else if it is missing
  • Year one, terms two and three: content, with exploration topics noticed in passing
  • Year two, term one: the exploration, colliding with other internal deadlines
  • Year two, term two: mocks and the sorting of lost marks by cause
  • Year two, term three: triage, with explicit decisions about what to skip

Set out term by term, the two Diploma years in mathematics have a shape that makes planning obvious. The first term of the first year is for establishing manipulation at the level the course assumes. Students arriving from IGCSE or MYP without fluent algebra should be fixing that in this term and nowhere else, because every later topic sits on top of it.

The second and third terms of the first year are for content with an eye on the exploration. This is the stretch in which a topic for the exploration can be noticed rather than hunted, because a student working through functions or statistics will encounter something that could carry an investigation. Families who start thinking about the exploration in the second year are already compressing a process that wanted months.

The first term of the second year is the exploration's term, whatever the school's precise deadline, and it collides with internal deadlines in other subjects. The second term is mocks and the review that follows. The third is triage. By the final term the question is no longer what the student could learn but which marks are still reachable, and the honest answer usually excludes part of the syllabus.

Against that shape, the common Sports City pattern — first enquiry after second-year mock results — arrives at the start of the triage phase. It is workable, and a well-targeted eight-week block does real work there. It is simply more expensive per mark than the same money spent in the first year, which is the argument for having the conversation early even when nothing appears to be wrong.

06

What maths support costs at each stage, in AED

Cost is best read against the stage rather than per hour, because the stages differ in length. A route-decision diagnostic is two sessions. An exploration block is six to eight. A manipulation rebuild is a term or two of weekly work. A post-mock recovery block is eight sessions. The same hourly rate produces very different totals, and the cheapest intervention per mark recovered is almost always the earliest one.

The published rates in this market are these. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, both at the university-student end. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's rate table puts specialists at AED 200 to 450 and beyond, and in-home visiting at AED 180 to 350, with independent home tutors between AED 200 and 500 once travel is counted. BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium named end.

Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly hour-long sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages advertised locally include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. All of these are provider-published figures read in October 2026, and none is IB Gram's price list.

The stage-by-stage reading is the useful one for a maths budget. Two sessions on the route decision is the smallest spend with the largest consequence, because it affects two years of work and a university application. An exploration block is a fixed, bounded cost against a component worth a fixed share of the grade. A manipulation rebuild is the most expensive in total and the only thing that fixes the underlying problem. Triage is expensive per week and short.

Why Paper 3 produces the sharpest mock drop

Higher Level students in Dubai consistently underperform on Paper 3 relative to their other papers in a first mock, and the reason is structural rather than mathematical. Paper 3 presents two extended tasks that lead a candidate through unfamiliar material, and the skill it tests — staying in an unfamiliar problem long enough to make progress — is one that classroom teaching rarely has time to practise.

Students meet it for the first time in the mock, discover that the questions do not look like the exercises they have done, and lose marks partly to unfamiliarity and partly to morale. Nothing about that is a content failure, and a block that responds by teaching more content misses it entirely. What works is exposure: sitting Paper 3 style tasks to time, repeatedly, early in the second year, and building tolerance for the first ten minutes when nothing is obvious yet.

The technique has components that can be named. Read the whole task before starting, because later parts often reveal what the early ones are for. Write something for every part, because partial credit is available and a blank scores nothing. Carry the structure of the earlier parts into the later ones, since the task is usually a single thread. And expect to be told things in the question that have not been taught; that is the design.

For a Sports City family, the practical consequence is a scheduling one. If a student is taking Analysis or Applications at Higher Level, the first Paper 3 to time should happen early in the second Diploma year and not be left for the mock. That single change moves a mock profile more than any other intervention available at that point in the calendar.

08

Honest limits, permits and what is not on offer

  • No part of an exploration is written, completed or produced by a tutor
  • No grade, points total or admission outcome is promised
  • No board or regulator accreditation is held or claimed; no UAE office exists
  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Examiner status is never claimed without evidence or used to imply inside access

Three limits are worth stating plainly on a page about mathematics tutoring. The first is on assessed work: a tutor teaches the exploration criteria, questions the mathematics, and gives feedback on the student's own draft, and does not write, complete or produce any part of it. Pages competing for these searches sell finished internal assessments. That is an academic-integrity breach and the finding lands on the candidate.

The second is on outcomes. No tutor can promise a grade, a points total or a university place, and a provider who does is selling something they cannot deliver. What can be promised is a stated target for a block, a written review at four sessions, and an honest answer when the target has not moved. Mathematics is unusually measurable, which makes that kind of accountability easier here than in most subjects.

The third is on status. IB Gram holds no International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or Ministry of Education approval or accreditation, claims none, and operates no office or centre in the UAE. Tutors are not described as examiners unless current examiner status can be evidenced, and examiner status is never used to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content.

On the regulatory side, private tuition in the UAE requires a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years to school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so any amount circulating online should be treated as unverified.

Where we tutor

Maths demand across the Dubailand communities

Sports City sits among communities whose weekly rhythms differ, and that affects when a maths block can realistically run. The subject mix differs a little too.

Dubai Sports City

Short journeys home mean an early evening slot works, which suits a non-calculator Paper 1 practice session when the student is not yet tired. Most enquiries here name Standard Level in the first Diploma year.

Victory Heights

Secondary students commute out of the community and arrive home late. Higher Level Analysis requests concentrate here, usually with Paper 3 named explicitly after a mock.

Motor City

Weekday evenings are heavy with sport, so maths blocks here hold better on a weekend morning. Exploration process work suits that slot well because it is discussion rather than drill.

Arabian Ranches and Ranches 2

Established Diploma cohorts and the heaviest Higher Level demand in this belt. Families here are more likely to enquire about the Analysis or Applications decision before Year 12 than after it.

DAMAC Hills

Longer bus journeys push sessions to 5.30pm or later. Two shorter sessions a week work better than one long one for calculator and manipulation drill.

Town Square and Mudon

Younger communities where the request is usually MYP mathematics rather than Diploma. The high-value work here is manipulation at the end of MYP 4, a full year before the route decision.

Remraam and Dubailand Residence

Commutes near an hour each way leave a narrow evening. Blocks are built around two sessions plus a longer weekend task set rather than three weekday hours.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which route, which level, which moment

An enquiry naming Analysis or Applications, Higher or Standard Level, and which of the three moments the family is in — route choice, exploration, or marks after a paper — can be answered properly in one message. Those three facts decide the length and shape of the block before any tutor is proposed.

  2. 02

    Trial lesson on real work

A full online session with the proposed specialist, spent on a marked paper or on a draft exploration rather than on an introduction. It ends with a written target: a Paper 1 score, a criterion to satisfy, a manipulation habit to change. No card is required and nothing is committed.

  3. 03

    Target set and omissions named

Each block states what it will move and what it will deliberately not touch. In maths that usually means naming the two or three topics that will be rebuilt and the ones that will be left, which is the conversation most providers avoid and the one that makes a short block honest.

  4. 04

Weekly timed work, marked against the scheme

Questions or whole papers are set to time, and the student marks them against the published scheme in the session while the tutor asks why each mark was awarded or withheld. Errors are logged by category across weeks so a repeated habit becomes visible rather than forgotten.

  5. 05

    Review at four sessions

The target is measured in writing at the halfway point. If it has not moved, the diagnosis, the tutor or the frequency changes, at no cost. In mathematics this review is unusually clean, because a Paper 1 score under the same conditions is directly comparable from one month to the next.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Analysis and Applications matched separately

The two routes punish different weaknesses and reward different habits. A tutor strong in algebraic manipulation is not automatically the right match for an Applications student whose losses are all in contextual interpretation, and matching by route rather than by 'maths' is the first thing that makes a block work.

Paper 3 treated as its own problem

Higher Level students drop hardest on Paper 3 in a first mock because almost nobody has sat one to time. Scheduling that attempt early in the second Diploma year, repeatedly, changes a mock profile more than any additional content teaching available at the same point.

Exploration planned backwards

Topic feasibility in week eight and formatting in the final week, with no mathematics happening at the end. Roughly half the available marks are for process and communication, which is why the criteria are taught by name with their mark ceilings rather than described in general terms.

Calculator setup treated as marks

Students lose marks to the syntax of their own machine rather than to mathematics. One session on the specific model the school uses — regression fields, distribution argument order, display accuracy — removes a recurring category of loss that no amount of content teaching touches.

Mathematics is unusually easy to measure, so every block carries a target that can be compared month to month under the same conditions. A review at session four with a continue-or-change decision is what stops a block running to its end without anyone noticing it failed.

Delivery and limits stated

Lessons are live, one-to-one and online in Gulf Standard Time; no tutor is sent to a UAE address and in-home visiting runs only in India. No board or regulator accreditation is claimed, no UAE office exists, and no grade or points outcome is promised at any price.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Sports City: your questions answered

Which IB maths route should a Sports City student pick, Analysis or Applications?+

Decide on two pieces of evidence rather than on reputation. First, assess algebraic manipulation under non-calculator conditions, because that predicts Analysis performance better than any school report. Second, read the admissions pages of the specific universities and courses the student is considering, since some programmes in mathematics, engineering and physics expect the Analysis route by name. Neither course is the easy one: Analysis punishes weak manipulation, Applications punishes students who produce calculator outputs without interpreting them in context.

Can an IB maths tutor come to a house in Dubai Sports City?+

Not through IB Gram. All UAE lessons are delivered live online, one to one, over video in Gulf Standard Time, and in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. For mathematics the online format is arguably the better surface anyway: the tutor watches the student's working appear line by line on a shared screen and can interrupt at the exact point a reasoning step is skipped, which is harder to do reading a page across a table.

When should my child start the mathematical exploration?+

Topic selection at least eight weeks before the school deadline, and ideally with a candidate topic noticed during the first Diploma year. Working backwards, the final week should be formatting and referencing, the fortnight before that reflection and commentary, and the mathematics itself finished earlier still. The single most expensive mistake is choosing a topic on interest and then discovering the mathematics is either trivial or beyond the course level, which wastes weeks nobody has.

Why is my child's Paper 3 mark so much lower than Paper 1 and Paper 2?+

Because Paper 3 is the paper almost nobody has sat to time before their first mock. It presents two extended tasks that lead a candidate through unfamiliar material, and the skill it tests is staying in an unfamiliar problem long enough to make progress. That is exposure, not content. Sitting Paper 3 style tasks to time early in the second Diploma year, repeatedly, moves a Higher Level mock profile more than any additional topic teaching at the same point.

Is a weekly maths hour enough for a Higher Level student?+

It depends what the hour is doing. One session a week is right for a manipulation rebuild, where the limit is how much a student can absorb rather than how much teaching is available. It is not enough in the final weeks, when the work is whole papers sat to time and marked, and two or three sessions a week is the useful frequency. The failure mode is a weekly hour with no target that drifts towards whatever homework happens to be due.

How much of the exploration mark is actually mathematics?+

Roughly half. The published criteria cover presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics, and only the last of those is mathematics in the narrow sense. Students who produce competent mathematics and write two sentences of reflection leave marks on the table that no additional mathematics recovers. Reading the criteria and self-marking a draft against each one is the highest-return hour available on this component, and almost nobody does it.

My child arrived from IGCSE and is struggling with the first term of Analysis. What now?+

Treat it as a manipulation problem until proved otherwise. The step from IGCSE to Analysis is in abstraction rather than in topic coverage, and most early difficulty traces back to rearrangement, indices, surds and function notation rather than to the new content. A narrow block on those, in the first term rather than the second, is the cheapest fix available. Students who took Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics usually meet this step far more easily, which is itself informative.

Does the graphic display calculator really cost marks?+

Regularly, and almost always to syntax rather than to mathematics. A regression run correctly but read from the wrong field, a distribution function given its arguments in the wrong order, an answer left in a display format the question did not request. One session on the specific model the school uses removes a recurring loss across every calculator-permitted paper. It is the least glamorous session on any maths block and frequently the highest-yield one.

Can a tutor help with the exploration if the deadline is next week?+

A tutor can teach the criteria, question whether the mathematics is sound, and give feedback on what the student has already written. A tutor cannot write, complete or produce any part of it, whatever the deadline. That is an IB academic-honesty rule and work a student did not produce becomes a malpractice finding against them. Realistically, a final-week session is a criterion check and a presentation review, which is useful but much smaller than what an eight-week run would have achieved.

How does Standard Level maths differ in tutoring terms from Higher Level?+

Standard Level has two papers rather than three and less syllabus depth, so a block can cover proportionally more of the course in the same time. Higher Level adds Paper 3 and extra content in every topic, which means an eight-week block has to choose. In practice Standard Level blocks are often technique-led and can lift a grade quickly, while Higher Level blocks have to decide early between covering gaps and drilling the unfamiliar paper.

What is the earliest useful point to get maths help in the Diploma?+

Before it starts. Two sessions in the term the option form is due, spent assessing manipulation and checking university prerequisites, is the smallest spend with the largest consequence available anywhere in the two years. After that, the first term of the first year, on fluency. Both are cheaper per mark than anything that happens after a second-year mock, which is when most Sports City families first enquire.

Do you teach MYP mathematics as preparation for the Diploma?+

Yes, and the useful window is the end of MYP 4 rather than MYP 5. MYP assesses four criteria out of eight each and converts them by published boundaries, so a student can hold a respectable grade for two years while manipulation stays weak and nothing in the reporting shows it. A block at the end of MYP 4 leaves a full year to build fluency before the Analysis or Applications decision has to be made, which changes what that decision can be.

What does a maths block cost over an eight-week period in Dubai?+

Applying Bestimate's published monthly estimates for weekly hour-long sessions, two months at the mid band of AED 600 to 1,200 a month is roughly AED 1,200 to 2,400, and at the specialist exam-year band of AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more it is roughly AED 2,000 to 4,000. The hourly figures behind those run from AED 33 to 65 at the university-student end to AED 650 for premium named tutors. These are provider-published market rates read in October 2026, not IB Gram prices.

How will I know the maths block is working rather than just pleasant?+

Compare a timed paper score under the same conditions a month apart. Mathematics is unusually measurable, so this is cleaner here than in essay subjects: sit the same paper type, to the same time, mark it against the published scheme, and look at the number. If the block is about the exploration instead, the measure is whether the student can self-mark their own draft against each criterion and justify the mark they give themselves.

Tell us the route, the level and the moment

For an IB maths tutor in Dubai Sports City, the message that gets a useful answer names the route, the level and which moment you are in: the option-form decision, the exploration, or marks after a paper. Those three facts decide whether the right block is two sessions, eight, or two terms, and what it can honestly be expected to move. The trial lesson is a full teaching session with the proposed specialist, delivered live online in Gulf Standard Time, and it ends with a measurable target in writing.
