IB Diploma Tutor in the UAE

An IB Diploma tutor in the UAE has two rulebooks to work inside: the Diploma's own architecture of six subject groups, three Higher Levels and a core worth three points, and the emirate authority that licensed your child's school along with the federal subjects sitting on their timetable beside it. IB Gram matches Diploma students across the Emirates with one subject specialist each, one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are an India-only service. Reviewed 22 October 2026.

  • One subject specialist per Diploma subject, not one tutor across six
  • Lessons run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • We ask every UAE-resident tutor for their MoHRE private tuition permit
  • Feedback on your child's own drafts; no assessed work produced for them

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

What the Diploma asks for, and what the Emirates ask on top

The IB Diploma Programme is not a syllabus a tutor can approach subject by subject and hope the rest looks after itself. Your child is carrying six subjects drawn from six groups, three of them at Higher Level, and a core of three parts - the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service - that no single subject teacher owns. Forty-two of the forty-five available points come from the subjects; the last three come from the core. A tutor who has only ever taught one subject in isolation will miss where the total actually leaks.

Sitting on top of that is a school system with its own requirements. Whichever emirate your child studies in, a local authority licensed the school, approved its curriculum and published a judgement on it. In Dubai that authority is KHDA. In Abu Dhabi and Al Ain it is ADEK. In Sharjah it is the Sharjah Private Education Authority, in Ras Al Khaimah the Department of Knowledge, and in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah the federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools directly. Those five bodies decide things your child's Diploma coordinator cannot.

They also decide what else is on the timetable. Arabic, Islamic Education and social and moral studies are compulsory in Dubai private schools whatever international curriculum the school holds a licence for, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students because the content and the language of instruction differ. A Diploma student here is therefore not studying six subjects and a core. They are studying six subjects, a core, and a set of ministry subjects that sit outside the points total while still taking up weekday hours and homework evenings.

Then there is the paperwork that arrives after the grades. A school-leaving certificate has to be recognised in the Emirates before it opens a place at a UAE university, and the Ministry of Education runs that equivalency process curriculum by curriculum. For British-track students the requirements are published and specific: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. For the Diploma, no points threshold appears in any source we are able to cite, so this page publishes none.

What follows sets out that whole frame: the Diploma's own arithmetic, the authority above your child's school, the ministry subjects beside it, the permit a paid tutor needs to charge for lessons here, and the honesty rules governing what any of that help may touch. Market figures are given in AED with the provider named and the month they were read. Lessons from IB Gram are delivered one-to-one over live video, which is how a family in Umm Al Quwain reaches a Higher Level Chemistry specialist rather than whoever happens to be willing to drive out there on a Tuesday.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IB Gram covers the Diploma Programme and the two routes immediately around it, because the choices that decide a Diploma total are usually made two or three years before DP1 starts. Each note below says what the programme is, then what the UAE system adds to it that an overseas guide will not mention.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, one from each of Groups 1 to 5 plus a sixth from Group 6 or a second subject from Groups 1 to 4. Three are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, each graded 1 to 7. Alongside them sit the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every subject carries an internally marked, externally moderated assessment component, and the school - not the IB - sets the dates those are due.

In the Emirates the Diploma is the smaller of the mainstream options: the IB accounted for 7 per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment in 2024-25, against 37 per cent on UK curricula and 26 per cent Indian. That share shapes tutoring. A school running one Diploma cohort may have a single teacher for a Group 4 Higher Level, and a family north of Sharjah may find no Diploma school within a sensible commute at all.

DP CoursesAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme course candidate route

A student may take individual Diploma subjects and receive course results for them without registering for the full Diploma. There is no requirement to spread across all six groups, no Higher Level quota, and the core is not compulsory, so no point total out of 45 is issued. Subjects are examined and graded on the same 1 to 7 scale by the same examiners, and internal assessment still applies to each one.

UAE families reach this route for two reasons. Either the school cannot staff a sixth subject the student wants, or a Higher Level is going badly enough in DP2 that the full Diploma is at risk. Before moving, ask the coordinator in writing what course results mean for the universities on your child's list and for a Ministry of Education equivalency file, because the answer differs by destination and is not something a tutoring provider can settle for you.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1 to 5

Middle Years Programme

The five-year programme that feeds the Diploma inside IB continuum schools. Assessment runs against four published criteria per subject, marked in school on a 1 to 8 scale per criterion rather than by external examiners. Students take a broad spread of subjects, with language acquisition, sciences, individuals and societies, mathematics, arts, design and physical and health education all running at once, and a Personal Project in the final year.

The step from MYP 5 into DP1 is where most UAE Diploma tutoring requests begin. The content gap is smaller than parents fear; the assessment gap is larger. A student used to criterion-marked tasks set by their own teacher meets externally marked papers written around command terms for the first time, and in a school whose Diploma cohort is new, there may be no archive of past student work for a teacher to show them.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A Diploma timetable is built by group, not by subject, so this grid is laid out the way your child's choices were actually made. Each entry names what the group covers in UAE schools, where the marks go missing, and which parts a tutor can usefully take on. The three core requirements are listed last, because they are where families most often discover help is needed late.

Group 1: Language A - Language and Literature, or Literature

HL and SL

Usually English in UAE international schools, with Arabic A, Hindi and other languages offered as school size allows. Assessment combines timed papers on unseen and studied texts with an individual oral and, at Higher Level, an essay on a studied work. Marks are lost on comparison and on sustained argument rather than on reading comprehension.

Group 2: Language acquisition - Arabic B, Arabic ab initio, French B, Spanish B

HL and SL; ab initio is SL only

The one group where a UAE mandatory subject can also earn Diploma points, if the school streams Arabic so that a student's level matches a Group 2 course. Assessment is listening, reading, writing and an individual oral. Non-Arab students starting from very little are the natural ab initio candidates, and that decision is made in DP1, not DP2.

Group 3: Individuals and societies - Economics, Business Management, History, Psychology, Global Politics

HL and SL

Essay-marked subjects where command terms decide the mark. Students who write everything they know about a topic score below students who answer the question asked. Each subject carries its own internal assessment - a commentary, a research project or a case study - and the Higher Level papers add an extra component rather than simply more content.

Group 4: Sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Sports Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

The hardest group to staff in a small UAE cohort and the one most often behind a tutoring enquiry. All share a practical scheme of work and an internally assessed investigation the student designs themselves. Marks go on evaluation and on uncertainty handling, not on recall, and the Higher Level syllabus adds whole topics rather than deeper versions of the same ones.

Group 5: Mathematics - Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route for students heading towards engineering, physics, economics at a quantitative university or mathematics itself. Proof, algebraic fluency and calculus carry the papers, one of which is sat without a calculator. The exploration is marked against published criteria and is where many otherwise strong students drop several points by choosing a topic with nothing to analyse.

Group 5: Mathematics - Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-assisted work, with every paper calculator-permitted. It is not the easy route and it is not a lesser qualification; it is a different one. Before choosing it, check the entry requirements of the specific university courses on your child's list, because some quantitative degrees name Analysis and Approaches explicitly.

Group 6: The arts - Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Film

HL and SL

Portfolio and performance-assessed subjects, with written and curatorial components that catch students out because they are graded as rigorously as an essay. A Diploma student may instead take a second subject from Groups 1 to 4 here, and in smaller UAE schools that is often the only option on the timetable.

Core: Extended Essay

Compulsory for the full Diploma

A 4,000-word independent research piece in one subject, supervised by a school teacher and marked externally from A to E. It contributes to the three core points through a matrix shared with Theory of Knowledge. A grade E is a failing condition for the Diploma, which is why the research question matters more than the writing.

Core: Theory of Knowledge

Compulsory for the full Diploma

Assessed through an essay on a prescribed title, written to a 1,600-word limit, and an exhibition of three objects with a commentary of roughly 950 words. It has no subject grade of its own; it is graded A to E and combines with the Extended Essay for the final three points. Students who treat it as an opinion piece score badly.

Core: Creativity, Activity, Service

Compulsory for the full Diploma

A portfolio of experiences and at least one longer project, with reflections, signed off in school as complete or not complete. It carries no points and cannot be skipped: an incomplete record is a failing condition. The useful tutoring contribution here is time management against the school's own deadlines, nothing more.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four arrangements cover almost every Diploma request we receive from the Emirates. All of them run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and all of them are built around your child's school calendar rather than ours, because the internal deadlines that drive the year are set in school.

Weekly one-to-one in a single subject

One specialist, one subject, a fixed weekly slot for a term at a time. This is what most Diploma families need and it is deliberately narrow: a Chemistry Higher Level tutor who also claims Economics and Maths Analysis and Approaches is usually a general tutor wearing three hats. Progress is judged against the school's own assessment points, not a separate curriculum invented by us.

  • 45, 60 or 90-minute sessions depending on the subject
  • Reviewed with you every six weeks against school assessments
  • Session notes written up and shared the same evening
  • Slot held through Ramadan at a post-Iftar time if you want it

Core supervision blocks

Short blocks of sessions around the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and the subject internal assessments, timed to your school's internal deadlines. The work is teaching and feedback: discussing a research question, explaining what a prescribed title is asking, reading a draft and asking the questions an examiner would. Every word submitted stays your child's own, and we will tell you if a request crosses that line.

  • Research question and method discussed before the writing starts
  • Criteria explained letter by letter with their mark allocations
  • Draft read and questioned, never rewritten
  • Word and page limits checked against the subject's published guidance

Transition support into DP1

A block of sessions between IGCSE, MYP or Grade 10 and the start of the Diploma, aimed at the assessment gap rather than the content gap. Most of the work is command terms, unfamiliar problem solving and the independent design expected in an internal assessment. It is the cheapest intervention in the two years and the one families most often skip.

  • Subject-by-subject diagnostic before the first session
  • Past-paper technique using the official syllabus the school names
  • Six to twelve weeks, usually across the summer
  • A written handover note for the first term of DP1

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in the UAE

The tutors below teach the IB Diploma Programme: Higher and Standard Level subject specialists, each matched to one subject rather than spread across a whole timetable. Availability is shown in Gulf Standard Time. Where no UAE-resident specialist covers a subject, the match may be a tutor teaching from outside the Emirates, and we say so before you book anything.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What a Diploma tutor has to know that a general subject tutor does not

  • Ask a prospective tutor which group your child's weak subject sits in
  • Ask when the school's internal assessment deadline falls, not the IB's
  • Ask what the tutor will not do with a draft, and listen to the answer
  • Ask whether they have taught the Higher Level, not just the subject

Parents searching for an IB Diploma tutor in the UAE are usually one subject into the problem. Chemistry is going badly, or the maths exploration has stalled, and the obvious move is to find somebody who knows that subject. That is necessary and it is not sufficient. The Diploma awards points on a fixed arithmetic, carries internal deadlines the school sets rather than the IB, and runs inside a school licensed by an emirate authority with its own requirements bolted onto the week. A tutor who knows only the subject is working blind on three of those four things.

The practical difference shows up in what a tutor asks in the first session. A subject-only tutor asks which topic is hard. A Diploma specialist asks which six subjects your child took, which three are Higher Level, what the Extended Essay subject is, when the school's internal coursework deadlines fall, what the January mock produced and whether predicted grades have already gone to universities. Those answers change the plan completely. Twelve weeks of Chemistry help before a mock is a different purchase from twelve weeks spent rescuing a Group 3 Higher Level that is dragging the total under the award threshold.

It also changes what the help is allowed to be. The Diploma's academic-honesty rules bind the student, and the declaration your child signs covers outside assistance. A paid tutor can teach the physics, model the technique, read a draft and ask hard questions about it. The words, the data and the argument stay the student's own. A family offered anything more than that has been offered a route to a malpractice investigation, and the research behind these pages found one provider in this market selling finished internal assessments outright at a published price.

02

The six groups, and the choices your child has already locked in

A Diploma timetable is assembled from six groups, and by the time a parent is reading a tutoring page the assembly is finished. One subject comes from each of Groups 1 to 5. The sixth comes from Group 6, the arts, or is a second subject from Groups 1 to 4 where the school can staff it. Three of the six are taken at Higher Level, with more taught hours and extra assessment components, and three at Standard Level. Changing any of it in DP2 needs the coordinator's agreement and usually the registration to have not yet closed.

That structure explains most of what goes wrong. A student who took two sciences and no arts subject has a heavier practical load and two internal investigations to design rather than one. A student who chose Analysis and Approaches because it sounded more impressive, without checking whether their university courses asked for it, has bought a calculator-free paper they did not need. A student whose school offered only one Group 3 subject is studying it whether or not it suits them. None of this is fixable by working harder at the subject in isolation.

The group structure also interacts with the mandatory UAE subjects in one useful way. Group 2 is language acquisition, and a school that streams Arabic properly can place a student in a Group 2 Arabic course that earns Diploma points while satisfying part of the ministry requirement. Islamic Education and Social Studies have no such route: they sit outside the 45 points entirely. Knowing which of your child's weekly Arabic hours can count and which cannot is the single most useful question to put to the coordinator.

03

Forty-five points, and where every one of them comes from

The Diploma total is simple arithmetic that almost nobody explains to parents. Each of the six subjects is graded 1 to 7, giving 42 points. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are each graded A to E and combine in a single matrix worth up to three further points. Creativity, Activity, Service carries no points at all but must be recorded as complete. Forty-two plus three is the 45 that gets quoted in newspapers, and the three that come last are the ones families notice last.

Two misunderstandings cost real points. The first is that a Higher Level subject is worth more than a Standard Level one. It is not: both are graded out of 7, and Higher Level simply demands more taught hours, more syllabus and an extra assessment component for the same ceiling. The second is that a grade 7 is a fixed percentage. It is not: boundaries are set per session after marking, which is exactly why no honest tutor will tell you what mark your child needs on Paper 2 to secure one.

The core is where the arithmetic turns sharp. Three points sounds negligible until a university offer sits at 38 and the subjects have delivered 36. A grade A in both the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge is the difference, and both are written in DP1 and early DP2, long before anyone is thinking about offers. That is the strongest argument for spending tutoring money early rather than in the last term, when only exam technique is still movable.

Where the points come fromHow it is gradedMaximumHow it reaches the 45What families misread

04

The conditions under which a Diploma is not awarded

  • A failing grade in the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge can stop the award
  • An incomplete Creativity, Activity, Service record can stop it as well
  • Low grades concentrated at Higher Level are treated differently from the same grades at Standard Level
  • Academic misconduct is handled separately and can remove the award entirely
  • Get the current conditions from the coordinator rather than from any tutoring site

Most families know the figure 24 and assume it is the whole rule. It is one condition among several. A student can clear 24 points and still not be awarded the Diploma, because the IB applies a set of separate conditions covering the core, the spread of low grades and the balance between Higher and Standard Level. Those conditions are published in the IB's assessment procedures, they are revised from time to time, and the current year's wording is something your child's coordinator holds and should be asked for directly.

The shape of them is worth understanding before any tutoring money is spent, because it changes where the money should go. A single grade 1 anywhere, a failing core grade, an incomplete Creativity Activity Service record, or too many grade 2s concentrated at Higher Level can each stop the award on their own. That is why a competent plan looks at the weakest subject rather than the one the student most enjoys improving, and at the core rather than the subject already sitting on a 6.

It is also why we will not quote an exact set of thresholds on a web page. Numbers published without the current source attached are how one competitor in this market came to state the wrong subject count for a Ministry of Education requirement. Ask the coordinator for the award conditions in writing, read them against your child's predicted grades, and then decide which two subjects or which core component actually need paid hours. A tutor who has taught the Diploma will do that reading with you in the first session.

05

Which authority sits above your child's Diploma, and what it approves

The IB authorises a school to teach the Diploma. A UAE authority licenses that school to operate at all, approves what it teaches and publishes a judgement on how well it does so. Those are different powers held by different bodies, and conflating them is the most common error in tutoring copy aimed at this market. Five authorities cover the seven emirates, and the one above your child's school decides fees, curricula and, in some emirates, assessment methods.

This matters when a family moves. A Dubai inspection report does not follow a child to Sharjah, and the approval route for a new subject in Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah runs through the emirate authority rather than the school alone. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, which quietly rules out the arrangement many families would otherwise prefer. That rule has been press-reported rather than read by us from a current policy document, so verify it against ADEK's own publication before relying on it.

What none of these authorities does is set your child's grades. Paper weightings, internal assessment criteria, moderation and grade boundaries belong to the IB. No UAE regulator approves, accredits or licenses a tutoring provider to teach the Diploma, and any page claiming such status is describing something that does not exist for an individual tutor. A tuition business with premises and staff in Dubai is a different case: it needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least 30 days before expiry.

The ministry subjects sharing a Diploma timetable

Private schools in the Emirates are not obliged to follow a particular curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must follow the Ministry's general regulations. That federal baseline is why a Diploma student in Dubai carries subjects that contribute nothing to their 45 points. KHDA's requirements for the mandatory subjects applied from the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April, and they are more prescriptive than most parents realise.

The rules reach into how classes are formed and what language they run in. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language; non-Arabs study Islamic Education and moral, social and cultural studies in the language of the school's licensed curriculum.

Two further details matter for planning tutoring hours. Instructional time for the mandatory subjects is calculated in 40-minute lesson units, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and any mandatory subject lesson is advised to run at least 25 minutes. And for these subjects the use of different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry is strictly prohibited, so a tutor cannot simply bring their own Arabic worksheets. Teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic in Dubai schools must hold the relevant KHDA permission to teach those subjects.

Coming into DP1 from IGCSE, MYP or an American high school

The IGCSE to IB Diploma transition is the busiest tutoring request of the UAE summer, and it is usually misdiagnosed. Parents describe it as a content gap, so they buy content. The gap that actually bites is assessment: a student who scored A* by executing well-practised methods on predictable questions meets unfamiliar problems, command terms that instruct the examiner as much as the candidate, and an internal assessment they are expected to design without being told what to do. The content catches up in weeks. The habits take a term.

Each starting point fails differently, which is why a generic bridging course is poor value. An IGCSE mathematician moving to Analysis and Approaches hits a non-calculator paper and a proof requirement. An IGCSE Combined Science student moving to a single Group 4 subject hits the independent investigation. An MYP 5 student hits externally marked papers for the first time. An American Grade 10 student moving into Group 1 hits comparative analysis under time. Naming the specific failure point is most of the work, and it can be done in one diagnostic session.

There is a timing argument too. Support delivered between Year 11 and DP1, or in the first eight weeks of DP1, is cheaper per point recovered than anything bought in DP2, because the internal assessments and the Extended Essay have not yet been submitted. By February of DP2, the only things still movable are exam technique and the final drafts. Families in the Emirates who have moved curriculum once already, which is most of them, tend to understand this faster than the brochures assume.

What Diploma tuition costs in the UAE market

Three of the six best-ranking pages for this search publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars, which is not the currency a UAE family transacts in. So here are IB Diploma tutor rates in AED, read from each provider's own public pricing in October 2026 and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table. These are market figures attributed to the providers that published them, not a price list of ours. They tell you what band your enquiry sits in before anyone quotes you.

The bands are wide for a reason, and the reason is rarely quality alone. A university student teaching Standard Level content and a subject specialist who has taught the Higher Level syllabus for a decade are doing different jobs, and so are an online hour and a two-hour visit that includes a drive across Dubai. Monthly packages seen in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visits. Bestimate's monthly estimates for one weekly hour run AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist support in an exam year.

Set those figures against the rest of the bill rather than in isolation. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. A family already paying a Diploma school fee is deciding how to spend a marginal few thousand dirhams a year, and the answer is usually fewer hours on the right subject rather than more hours spread thin. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson and a short consultation; there is no published rate card here to compare against the rows below, by design.

A visiting tutor in the Emirates, or one-to-one over live video

Searches for a Diploma tutor in this market still mean, to most families, somebody at the dining table twice a week. That arrangement exists here and it is widely sold, at AED 180-500 an hour with travel inside the rate and usually a two-hour minimum to make the journey worth making. It has real advantages: a teenager cannot close a laptop on a person sitting beside them. It also has one structural limit that matters more in the Emirates than almost anywhere else.

The limit is the tutor pool. A visiting arrangement selects from whoever teaches your child's subject within a tolerable drive of your address in the evening traffic. For Group 1 English or Standard Level Biology in Dubai, that pool is adequate. For Physics Higher Level in Al Ain, Computer Science in Ras Al Khaimah, or Theory of Knowledge supervision anywhere north of Sharjah, it is often empty. Online IB Diploma tuition in the UAE selects instead from every specialist whose working hours overlap Gulf Standard Time, which is a far larger set and the honest reason we deliver this way.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the Emirates; that service runs only in India. Lessons here are one-to-one over live video, with a shared screen for working through a paper, the session recorded if you want it and a written summary afterwards. For a Diploma family the practical gain is that the match is made on subject and level rather than on postcode, and a cancelled slot costs nobody a wasted drive. The comparison below is laid out so you can weigh that trade-off rather than take our word for it.

The core, and the line a paid tutor does not cross

Extended Essay supervision and Theory of Knowledge support are the two requests where a tutoring arrangement most often goes wrong, because the help a student needs and the help that breaks the rules look superficially similar. Both components are the student's own work, declared as such, and both are supervised inside the school by a teacher who signs for the process. A paid tutor sits outside that process and must behave accordingly: teaching the subject, explaining the criteria, discussing a research question, reading a draft and asking the questions an examiner would ask.

What that rules out is simple to state. No tutor supplies text that ends up in a submission. No tutor chooses the research question, collects the data, builds the argument or rewrites a paragraph into something better than the student could produce. No tutor edits a piece to completion. These are not house style preferences; outside assistance beyond legitimate teaching is a malpractice matter for the student, and the consequence falls on them rather than on whoever took the fee. Our research into this market found a provider advertising finished internal assessments for sale, which is exactly the offer to walk away from.

Within those limits there is a great deal a specialist can usefully do, and the published limits are a good place to start a first session. Criteria letters with their mark allocations, the word and page ceilings for each component, and the school's own internal deadlines together make a plan. Most students who lose core points lose them to a weak research question chosen in a hurry and a timetable that left no room for a second draft - both problems a tutor is allowed to fix, and both problems best fixed in DP1.

Who may be paid to teach your child, and what equivalency asks later

  • Ask a UAE-resident tutor to show the MoHRE private tuition work permit
  • The permit is free and valid for two years; nobody should charge you for it
  • An Abu Dhabi school teacher may not take fees from their own enrolled students
  • Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process - check it on moe.gov.ae
  • No tutoring provider can guarantee or perform an equivalency decision

Private tuition in the Emirates is a permitted activity with a permit attached. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the smart app, website or e-services system.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts has been published, so no figure belongs on a page like this, and a figure circulating online could not be verified against any official source. What a parent can reasonably do is ask. A UAE-resident tutor can show the permit; an overseas tutor teaching your child over video is a different arrangement, and we tell you which one you are being offered before the first paid session rather than after it.

Equivalency comes later and belongs to the Ministry of Education, not to any tutoring provider. The British-track requirements are published: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. On the American track, English is demonstrated by IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing, and mathematics by at least 450 in SAT Math. For the Diploma, verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority directly. We describe the process; we do not run it, and tuition is not a requirement of it.

Where we tutor

Where the Diploma is actually taught, emirate by emirate

Diploma availability is uneven across the Emirates, and that unevenness is the real reason a family starts looking for outside help. The notes below say which authority publishes the inspection material you can read, and what Diploma subject choice realistically looks like on the ground. Figures on new schools and places come from KHDA announcements for the 2026-27 intake.

Dubai

The deepest Diploma market in the country and the only one where a student can usually find their sixth subject on the timetable. KHDA licenses and inspects the schools, publishes the reports you can read before paying for anything, and confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for 2026-27.

Abu Dhabi

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and its professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. Diploma provision is concentrated on the island, Khalifa City and Al Raha, so Group 4 Higher Level choice narrows quickly outside those clusters.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK rather than a regulator of its own, which surprises families who have moved from Dubai. The Diploma cohort in any one Al Ain school tends to be small, so a student wanting a less common Higher Level is often the only candidate in their year taking it, with no study group and one teacher.

Sharjah

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Subject availability therefore depends on an approval process at emirate level, not only on what a school would like to open. Many Sharjah families commute to Dubai schools, which pushes tutoring slots late into the evening.

Ajman

Private schools here are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education rather than an emirate authority, so there is no local inspection portal to read. Diploma places are few, and families often enrol in Sharjah or Dubai instead. Online delivery removes the commute from the tutoring decision entirely, which matters more here than it does further south.

Ras Al Khaimah

The Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate and, like Sharjah's authority, approves fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods. Diploma provision exists but is thin, and a student who wants a Group 6 arts subject or a second language may have to take a course candidate route instead of the full Diploma.

Fujairah

Supervised federally by the Ministry of Education, with the smallest international school sector of the seven emirates and effectively no choice of Diploma school. Families here are the clearest case for one-to-one online teaching: the nearest subject specialist for a Higher Level science is not within driving distance of anywhere in the emirate.

Dubai Diploma schools

Dubai's Diploma provision runs across Emirates Hills, Al Barsha, Arabian Ranches, the Festival City corridor and Mirdif. KHDA's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools - four on UK curricula and three International Baccalaureate - creating 16,846 places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. More schools is not yet more Higher Level science teachers.

Abu Dhabi Diploma schools

Diploma provision licensed by ADEK clusters on Abu Dhabi island, Khalifa City, Al Raha and Saadiyat. Students we support attend schools across this group. Cohorts are smaller than Dubai's, which is why a Diploma student here more often needs a specialist for exactly one subject rather than general academic support.

Sharjah and the northern emirates

Diploma schools thin out sharply north of Dubai. Sharjah's provision is regulated by SPEA, while schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah fall under the federal Ministry of Education. A family in Ras Al Khaimah choosing the Diploma is usually choosing it at one particular school, with the subject list that school can staff.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. The schools named above are given as context for where the Diploma is taught in each emirate; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any of them is implied, and none of them is a client.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the six and the three

Send your child's six subjects, which three are at Higher Level, the Extended Essay subject, the school and the emirate. That is enough to tell you whether the problem is one subject, a route choice made in DP1 or a core deadline nobody has diaried. It takes about two minutes to write and saves a wasted first session.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson with the specialist, not a salesperson

One lesson of up to 45 minutes with the tutor proposed for the subject, at no charge, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue. It is a teaching session rather than a consultation, so you see the actual match. If the specialist is not UAE-resident, we say so before the trial is booked.

  3. 03

A written plan against your school's own dates

After the trial you get a short plan naming the internal assessment deadlines, the mock window and the components still movable, with the number of sessions each needs. Where a request would cross the academic-honesty line, the plan says so plainly and offers what is permitted instead.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions, reviewed every six weeks

A fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time, session notes the same evening, and a review against school assessment results every six weeks rather than a vague sense of progress. If the match is wrong, say so and we change the tutor; if a subject is finished with, stop that strand and keep the others.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One specialist per subject

A Diploma student with a Group 4 Higher Level problem and a Group 3 essay problem has two problems, and they are solved by two people. We match by subject and level rather than offering one tutor who covers everything, because a tutor claiming five Higher Levels is almost always a general tutor.

The authority above your school is named, not glossed

KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Department of Knowledge or the federal Ministry of Education: we say which one applies to your child's school and what it actually controls. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from any of them, and no honest tutoring page in this market can claim otherwise.

Every figure carries its source and its month

The AED bands on this page are attributed to the providers that published them and were read in October 2026. Regulatory statements link back to u.ae, KHDA and MoHRE. Where a fact could not be verified, including IB session dates and any Diploma points threshold for equivalency, this page leaves it out rather than guessing.

Teaching and feedback, with a stated limit

A tutor here explains criteria, models technique, reads a draft and asks the questions an examiner would. Nobody supplies text for a submission or chooses a research question on a student's behalf. That limit is written into the plan you receive, because in this market it is a genuine difference rather than a formality.

Availability stated before you commit

If no UAE-resident specialist covers your child's subject and level at the hour you need, we say so and offer the alternative - a tutor teaching from outside the Emirates, a different time slot, or an honest recommendation to wait. Pretending the gap does not exist is how families end up with a general tutor at a specialist rate.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

How many subjects does the IB Diploma require, and how are Higher and Standard Level split across them?+

Six subjects, one from each of Groups 1 to 5, with the sixth taken from Group 6, the arts, or as a second subject from Groups 1 to 4. Three of the six are studied at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Higher Level carries more taught hours, more syllabus and usually an extra examination component, but it is graded on the same scale of 1 to 7, so it is not worth more points. Students taking four Higher Levels do so by agreement with the school and carry the extra load for no additional points.

Where do the final three points on top of the forty-two subject points come from?+

From the core. The Extended Essay is graded A to E by an external examiner, Theory of Knowledge is graded A to E from the essay and the exhibition together, and the two grades combine in a single matrix worth up to three points. Creativity, Activity, Service earns nothing but must be recorded as complete. So 42 points come from the six subjects and three from the core, giving the 45 everyone quotes. Those last three are written and submitted in DP1 and early DP2, long before results matter, which is why they are the cheapest points to protect.

Can my daughter count her school's Arabic lessons as one of her six Diploma subjects?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking the coordinator directly. Group 2 is language acquisition, and a school that streams Arabic by level can place a student in a Group 2 Arabic B or ab initio course that earns Diploma points while also meeting part of the mandatory requirement. Arab students may be able to take Arabic as a Group 1 Language A subject instead. Islamic Education and Social Studies have no such route and sit outside the 45 points entirely. KHDA also requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in these subjects, so the stream your daughter is in affects the answer.

What can stop a Diploma being awarded even when a student reaches twenty-four points?+

Several separate conditions apply alongside the points total. A failing grade in the Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge, an incomplete Creativity Activity Service record, a grade 1 in any subject, or low grades concentrated at Higher Level can each prevent the award on their own, and academic misconduct is handled separately. The IB publishes these conditions in its assessment procedures and revises them from time to time, so the version that matters is the current one your child's coordinator holds. Ask for it in writing and read it against the predicted grades before deciding where tutoring hours should go.

Is the Diploma Programme actually taught in every emirate?+

No, and the gaps shape what tutoring a family needs. Dubai has the deepest provision, and the International Baccalaureate accounted for 7 per cent of its private-school enrolment in 2024-25. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain have established Diploma schools under ADEK. Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah each have a small number. In Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain there is effectively no choice of Diploma school. Where provision is thin, subject choice narrows and a student may be the only candidate in their year taking a particular Higher Level, with one teacher and no study group.

My son wants to take four Higher Levels. Is that permitted, and is it sensible?+

It is permitted with the school's agreement, and plenty of UAE students do it. Whether it is sensible depends on what it is for. Four Higher Levels bring more taught hours, more syllabus and an extra assessment component each, for no additional points beyond the 7 available in every subject. Universities set their offers in points and in named subjects, not in a count of Higher Levels. If a specific course requires a fourth Higher Level, take it. If the reason is that it looks stronger on paper, the same effort spent protecting a weak subject and the core usually returns more points.

Can a student in the UAE sit the IB Diploma as a private candidate without being enrolled at a school?+

The Diploma is awarded through schools the IB has authorised, and registration for examinations is made by the school, not by a family. Internal assessment, the Extended Essay and Creativity Activity Service all require supervision inside the school, so there is no straightforward private-candidate route comparable to entering an IGCSE at a centre. Families whose circumstances rule out school enrolment should ask an authorised school directly, and should treat any provider offering to arrange the Diploma without a school with real caution. Other qualifications have genuine private-candidate routes; the full Diploma does not work that way.

What is the Theory of Knowledge exhibition, and how does it differ from the essay?+

They are two separate assessments feeding one grade. The exhibition asks a student to choose three objects, link each to an internal assessment prompt and write a commentary of roughly 950 words explaining how knowledge works in each case. The essay is a 1,600-word response to a prescribed title set by the IB for that session. Students usually find the exhibition harder to start and the essay harder to finish. Together they produce a grade from A to E, which combines with the Extended Essay grade in the matrix worth up to three points.

My child left IGCSE with an A in maths and is struggling in DP1. What actually changed?+

The assessment changed more than the content did. IGCSE rewards accurate execution of methods a student has practised on predictable question types. Analysis and Approaches asks for proof, reasoning and progress on unfamiliar problems, and one of its papers is sat without a calculator. The exploration then asks for an independent piece of mathematics with nothing prescribed. A student with strong technique and no habit of unfamiliar problem solving looks as though they have lost ability; they have met a different demand. Eight to twelve weeks of problem-led work usually restores the position, and it is cheaper in DP1 than in DP2.

Our school is running the Diploma for the first time next year. What should we ask it?+

Ask which subjects it can staff at Higher Level, not which appear in the brochure, and how many students are expected in each. Ask who will supervise Extended Essays and in which subjects, since supervision capacity is the usual bottleneck in a first cohort. Ask what archive of past student work and marked exemplars teachers can show your child, because a new cohort has none. Finally, ask which authority licensed the school and read its most recent published judgement. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds three new International Baccalaureate schools, so this question is live for a good number of families.

How do predicted grades work for a Diploma student applying to university from the Emirates?+

Predicted grades are produced by the school, subject teacher by subject teacher, and sent with the application. They are not negotiable by a family and not something a tutoring provider can influence by asking. What moves them is evidence: mock results, internal assessment marks and classwork in the term before applications go out. That is why the useful window for tutoring sits before the predictions are made rather than after. Once the predictions are issued, the remaining work is converting them into final grades, which is a different and narrower job.

Which part of the Ministry of Education equivalency file can a Diploma family prepare in advance?+

The document-gathering part. Attestation of certificates, transcripts and identity documents takes time and is largely independent of results, so it can be started while your child is still in DP2. What cannot be prepared in advance is the requirement itself: the British-track rules are published in detail, while no Diploma points threshold appears in any source we can cite, so verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority before assuming anything. No tutoring provider performs, guarantees or speeds up this process, and tuition is not a condition of it.

We can fund tuition in two subjects, not six. Which two should they be?+

Start with whichever subject most threatens the award rather than whichever is most enjoyable to improve. A grade 1, a Higher Level sitting on a 2, or a core component heading for a low letter does more damage to a total than a 5 that could become a 6. Then look at the core, because the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are worth three points between them and are usually unsupervised in practice. A specialist can make that call properly in one session once they have the six subjects, the levels and the most recent school assessment data.

We expected a tutor at the kitchen table. What does a live video Diploma lesson do instead?+

It changes who is available rather than what happens in the hour. A visiting arrangement selects from whoever teaches the subject within a tolerable drive, which is adequate for Standard Level English in Dubai and often empty for Physics Higher Level in Al Ain. Teaching over live video selects from every specialist whose hours overlap Gulf Standard Time. In the session itself you get a shared screen for working through a paper, an optional recording and a written summary. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the Emirates; that service runs only in India.

Does Creativity, Activity, Service need any help from a tutor?+

Not teaching, no. It carries no points and is signed off in school as complete or not complete, and the activities and reflections have to be entirely the student's own. What goes wrong is almost never effort; it is record-keeping. Students complete experiences and never write the reflections, then discover in DP2 that the portfolio is short and the coordinator cannot sign it off. An incomplete record can stop the Diploma being awarded. If a tutor contributes anything here, it is diarying the reflections against the coordinator's deadlines, which costs very little.

Does my child sit the Diploma exams at their own school?+

In almost every case, yes. The school is the examination centre, it registers candidates with the IB, and it holds the deadline that closes registration months before the papers are sat. Families who move emirate or country mid-programme should raise this with both coordinators early, because transferring a registration is an administrative process with its own cut-off. We do not publish IB session or results dates on this page: those come from your coordinator or from ibo.org, and a date copied from a tutoring site is not a date worth diarying.

Start with the structure, then buy the hours

An IB Diploma tutor in the UAE is worth paying for once you know which of the 45 points are actually at risk and which part of the system is holding them back - a group choice made in DP1, a core component with no deadline against it, a Higher Level nobody at the school can staff properly, or a transition that was never bridged. Send the six subjects, the three Higher Levels and the emirate, and the first free trial lesson will tell you which of those it is. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, and we will say before you book if the right specialist is not UAE-resident.
