IB DP French Ab Initio Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP French ab initio tutor in Dubai is quoted anywhere between AED 150 and AED 450 an hour at market rates, and this page explains every factor that moves that number: native-speaker scarcity, the oral recording window, session length, sibling pairing and how close you sit to the May session. IB Gram matches your child with a French ab initio specialist and teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so the fee buys teaching minutes rather than a drive across the emirate.

What a French ab initio tutor in Dubai costs, and what actually changes the number

Dubai families asking about an IB DP French ab initio tutor almost always ask the price first, and almost never get an answer. Of the agency and platform pages ranking for this kind of search, three publish no figure at all, and two quote in US dollars, a currency no family in Dubai transacts in. So start with the number. Qualified language teachers working online quote roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour in this market. IB-experienced language acquisition specialists sit at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. An in-home visit anywhere in the emirate runs AED 180 to AED 500 an hour once travel is inside the fee, and a small premium tier quotes AED 500 to AED 650. Those are market rates read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

The spread is wide because an hour of French ab initio is not one thing. An hour spent building the first two hundred words of topic vocabulary is a different piece of work from an hour spent marking a written task against the message criterion, and a different piece again from an hour rehearsing a photograph description under the fifteen-minute preparation rule. Tutors price by the hardest thing they are asked to do, which is why a quote for conversation practice and a quote for criterion-referenced marking can differ by AED 150 for the same sixty minutes.

Dubai adds its own pressure on supply. The emirate ran 227 private schools in 2024-25, teaching 387,441 students across 17 different curricula, and IB programmes account for roughly seven per cent of that enrolment. The French-teaching pool is small relative to the francophone and bilingual-stream families who want it, and it empties in the weeks when individual orals are recorded, because every ab initio candidate in the city needs the same fortnight. Price follows that calendar more than it follows anything on a tutor's CV.

Geography is the other half of the bill, and it is the half families underestimate. A tutor driving from Al Barsha to Mirdif at four in the afternoon spends longer in the car than in the lesson, and that time is inside the quote whether it is itemised or not. IB Gram does not run home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. French ab initio tuition for Dubai is delivered one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, which means the fee buys teaching and your child's tutor can be the right French ab initio specialist rather than the nearest one.

The rest of this page is the arithmetic in detail: the market bands with their sources, the five factors that move a quote in this emirate, what the four assessment components actually demand, a twenty-four-month budget for a student starting in DP1, what the MoHRE permit costs a tutor, and where tutoring sits against Dubai school fees after KHDA confirmed no fee increase for 2026-27. Every figure carries where it came from, because an unattributed number is worth nothing to a parent deciding how to spend AED 1,200 a month.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

French ab initio sits in the final two years of a longer arc. What a Dubai family pays for in DP1 depends heavily on what happened in MYP, so the programme notes below are written around the French-specific handover points rather than as a general tour.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

French ab initio is one of the Group 2 language acquisition options and runs at Standard Level only. Over two years a student moves from no French to handling five prescribed themes with twenty topics between them, writing two short tasks under timed conditions, understanding recorded French at ab initio pace, and sustaining a recorded oral of roughly ten minutes built from a photograph.

In Dubai the ab initio cohort is usually small, sometimes a single class across a year group, which concentrates the teaching on whoever the school can timetable. That is the gap most families are filling when they look for an IB DP French ab initio tutor in Dubai: not a weak teacher, but one teacher covering a wide spread of starting points in one room.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP language acquisition runs in phases rather than levels, and a student can finish Year 11 anywhere from Phase 1 to Phase 4 in French. The phase reached is what decides whether ab initio is the honest choice or whether French B SL is the right course, and it is recorded in the school's own reporting rather than in any external grade.

Dubai students move schools and curricula more often than most, and a transfer between a British stream and an IB continuum school mid-MYP frequently breaks the French thread entirely. A student who did two years of Phase 1 French, stopped for a year, then arrived in DP1 is the classic Dubai ab initio candidate, and the first tutoring hours go on finding out what actually survived.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP includes a language development requirement rather than a graded Group 2 subject, so a CP student working on French is building a documented portfolio of language development rather than preparing for Paper 1 and Paper 2. The teaching looks different and the evidence requirements are different.

Only a handful of Dubai schools run the CP alongside the Diploma, so families often discover the language development strand late and want help structuring it. Tutoring here is about recording progress credibly for the portfolio, not about command terms, and it is usually a shorter engagement than a two-year ab initio plan.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

PYP schools introduce an additional language from the early years, and in Dubai that is commonly French or Arabic alongside the mandatory Arabic requirement. Nothing at this stage is examined, but a child who reaches Year 6 comfortable reading French aloud arrives in MYP at a phase that keeps French B open later.

For a Dubai parent weighing whether to keep French going through primary, the financial argument is simple: the gap between arriving in DP1 as an ab initio candidate and arriving as a French B candidate is roughly two years of catch-up that nobody has to pay for if the thread is never dropped.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A French ab initio tutor in Dubai is rarely hired in isolation. Families usually have one language problem and one other subject in the same term, so the grid below lists the language acquisition courses we cover alongside the subjects that most often share a timetable with them.

French ab initio

SL only

Five prescribed themes, twenty prescribed topics, four equally weighted components. The teaching load is front-heavy: vocabulary and the present tense in DP1, then text types and past tenses, then oral rehearsal. Marks are lost on text-type conventions far more often than on grammar.

French B

SL and HL

For students with three or more years of French behind them. HL adds two literary works and lengthens every written task, which is why the HL tutoring bill is consistently higher than the SL one. The individual oral is built from a literary extract at HL and a visual stimulus at SL.

Spanish ab initio

SL only

Same four-component structure as French ab initio and the same prescribed theme framework, but a different grammar sequence: Spanish verb morphology arrives earlier and the pronunciation load is lighter, so a Dubai student often reaches comparable written accuracy sooner.

Spanish B

SL and HL

Widely taken in Dubai's IB schools. The listening paper is where this subject bites, because recordings draw on more than one variety of Spanish and a student trained only on peninsular audio stalls on Latin American speakers.

German B

SL and HL

Case endings, verb-final subordinate clauses and the Perfekt-Präteritum choice account for most lost marks in written work. Diagnosing which of the four cases a student is actually guessing at is the first hour of any German B engagement.

Hindi B

SL and HL

Common in Dubai given the size of the Indian-curriculum community. The split is unusual: many candidates speak fluently and read Devanagari slowly, so the tutoring is script and register work rather than conversation.

Mandarin ab initio

SL only

The heaviest ab initio option for a late starter because character recognition has to be built from nothing alongside the same four components. Dubai availability is thin, and this is the language where a family most often waits for a match.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Group 1 rather than Group 2, but it shares the oral-assessment season with French ab initio, so the two compete for the same revision weeks in DP2. Families frequently book both and need the sessions sequenced rather than stacked.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The TOK exhibition and essay land in the same DP2 window as the language orals. A tutor here coaches the student's own thinking and gives feedback on their own drafts; the essay must be written by the student.

Arabic as an additional language

KHDA mandatory stream

Dubai private schools must teach Arabic regardless of the licensed curriculum, so a French ab initio candidate is usually carrying Arabic on the same timetable. Knowing that helps when planning which evenings are realistically free.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy French ab initio hours in Dubai, priced differently and suited to different points in the two years. All IB Gram teaching is live and online; the comparison below exists because the alternatives are what you are weighing it against.

Weekly one-to-one, live online

One sixty or ninety-minute session a week on a fixed slot, held through DP1 and lifted to two a week in the DP2 spring. This is the default and the cheapest route to a predictable monthly figure, because a fixed slot is the only thing that stops a term turning into six lessons instead of twelve.

  • Fixed weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Ninety-minute blocks reduce the effective hourly cost
  • Written tasks marked between sessions, not inside them
  • Indicative monthly band of AED 600-1,200 at market rates for one hour a week

Oral intensive before the recording window

A short block of three to six sessions concentrated on the individual oral: photograph description under the preparation rule, the discussion that follows, and the general conversation on a second theme. Booked four to six weeks before the school records, which is also when French specialists are scarcest and dearest.

  • Photograph drills across all five prescribed themes
  • Recorded rehearsals the student can rewatch
  • Discussion questions practised at the pace the examiner uses
  • Booked early or not at all; the window is the same for every candidate in Dubai

Paper 1 marking block

No live teaching at all for part of the cost: the student writes tasks to the brief, the tutor marks them against the published criteria and returns annotated work, then one session covers the pattern of errors. For families managing a budget, this converts expensive contact time into cheaper feedback time.

  • Tasks written under exam timing at home
  • Criterion-referenced annotation rather than a score alone
  • One consolidation session per three marked tasks
  • Useful between DP1 January and the DP2 mocks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What the Dubai market charges for IB DP French ab initio

A qualified language teacher working online one-to-one in Dubai quotes AED 150 to AED 300 an hour. An IB-experienced language acquisition specialist quotes AED 200 to AED 450 and above. An in-home visit runs AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel inside the fee. Those bands were read from published provider rate cards and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table in October 2026.

The table below is the thing almost no page in this market publishes. It compares provider models rather than brands, because the model is what determines the rate: a university student doing conversation practice and an IB-experienced teacher marking against the message criterion are selling different work, and a parent comparing them on price alone is comparing the wrong column. Read it with the right-hand column in view, because a rate with no stated source is a rate somebody invented.

Monthly packages are quoted as often as hourly rates in Dubai, and they are where the arithmetic gets slippery. Online packages around AED 799 a month for eight sessions work out near AED 100 an hour, which looks like a bargain until you check the session length and whether written tasks are marked outside the hour. In-home monthly packages of AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour sessions sit near AED 200 an hour with the travel absorbed. Bestimate's own monthly estimates for weekly one-hour tutoring in Dubai run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support.

IB Gram does not publish a price list on these pages, and the honest reason is that the rate depends on the match: subject, level, how far into the two years you are, and whether the tutor is teaching, marking or rehearsing an oral. What we do publish is the market, with sources, so that the quote you receive from anybody can be checked against it. The free trial lesson comes first, one per student, with no card details taken, and the rate is agreed after you have seen the teaching.

Five things that move a French ab initio quote in this emirate

  • Native-speaker premium: roughly AED 30-80 an hour, worth most in DP2 oral work
  • Oral window scarcity: AED 20-60 an hour on late bookings
  • Ninety-minute blocks: AED 10-40 an hour cheaper than hourly sessions
  • Sibling pairing: 25-40 per cent off per student when stages genuinely match
  • Late start in DP2: the single largest avoidable cost in the two years

The same tutor, the same hour and the same subject can be quoted AED 180 or AED 380 in Dubai depending on five variables, none of which is quality. Knowing which one is driving your quote is the difference between negotiating and guessing. The table sets out the direction and the typical swing for each.

Native-speaker scarcity is the first. Dubai's francophone teaching pool is sized for the French national curriculum community, not for IB language acquisition, and a native speaker who also knows how Paper 1 is marked is genuinely uncommon. That combination attracts a premium of roughly AED 30 to AED 80 an hour over a well-qualified non-native teacher who marks to the criteria just as accurately. For an ab initio beginner in DP1 the native-speaker premium buys very little; for oral rehearsal in DP2 it buys something real.

The oral recording window is the second and the sharpest. Individual orals are internally conducted and recorded inside a narrow window set by each school, and in Dubai those windows cluster. Every ab initio candidate in the city wants the same four weeks, specialists sell out, and quotes rise AED 20 to AED 60 an hour for late bookings. A family that books oral rehearsal in November pays the ordinary rate; the same family booking in the week the school announces its recording dates pays the scarcity rate.

The remaining three are in your control. Ninety-minute blocks cost less per hour than sixty-minute ones because setup and warm-up happen once rather than twice. Two siblings at a similar stage sharing one block cuts the per-student cost by a quarter to two-fifths, though it only works when both are genuinely at the same point. And starting late is the most expensive decision available: a student beginning in the second term of DP2 needs two or three sessions a week instead of one, at a higher rate, for a worse result than the same money spent eighteen months earlier.

Who French ab initio is for, and what choosing wrong costs

French ab initio exists for students with little or no previous French. It is Standard Level only, there is no Higher Level route, and schools are expected to place students on the basis of genuine prior experience rather than preference. That sounds administrative until you price the consequences of getting it wrong, which in Dubai happens often because of how much students move between schools and curricula.

Two failure modes dominate. The first is a student placed in ab initio who already has real French: three years of MYP Phase 2 or 3, or a year at a French-medium school. They coast through DP1, find the ceiling in DP2, and discover that the course cannot stretch to reward what they already know. The second is a student placed in French B who has almost no French, usually because the school had no ab initio class to offer. They spend DP1 drowning, and the catch-up bill is the largest single tutoring cost we see on language acquisition subjects.

A diagnostic hour settles it, and it is the cheapest hour in the whole engagement. The tutor asks the student to speak for two minutes about their school day, read a short authentic text aloud and answer three questions on it, and write eighty words describing a photograph. What comes back shows the actual phase: whether the present tense is secure, whether past-time reference exists at all, whether reading is decoding or comprehension. That is a level recommendation your child's school can act on, and it is worth having before the DP1 subject choices are locked rather than after.

If the recommendation is a switch, timing is everything. Moving between ab initio and French B in the first term of DP1 costs a few weeks of rework. Moving in DP2 means abandoning either a literary component or a vocabulary base, and the tutoring hours needed roughly triple. The honest advice is sometimes to stay in the wrong course and play it well, and a tutor who will say that out loud is more useful than one who sells you the switch.

04

The four components you are buying hours for

French ab initio is assessed in four parts of equal weight, which is unusual and strategically useful. There is no single component worth half the grade, so no component can be written off. A family budgeting hours should spread them across all four rather than pouring everything into the one the student dislikes most, which is almost always the oral.

Paper 1 asks for two short written tasks on prescribed topics, chosen from a set of options, each with a specified text type, audience and purpose. The marks are not mostly about grammar. They are about whether the student produced the text type asked for: a blog entry that reads as an essay, or a formal letter written in the register of a message to a friend, loses on the message and conceptual criteria even when the French is clean. This is the single most teachable component and the one where tutoring hours convert most directly into marks.

Paper 2 is split between listening and reading, a quarter each. Listening is where Dubai students in particular struggle, because classroom French is spoken slowly and deliberately while the recordings are not, and because an answer lifted whole from the audio often answers a different question than the one asked. Reading punishes the habit of scanning for one recognised word and building an answer around it. Both respond to volume rather than cleverness: short, frequent, timed practice beats long sessions.

The individual oral is internally conducted and recorded, and it is worth the same 25 per cent as each paper. The student describes a photograph linked to one of the five prescribed themes, discusses it with the teacher, then holds a general conversation that reaches into at least one other theme. Two preparation failures recur: a six-sentence description that exhausts itself in ninety seconds, and a memorised monologue that cannot answer an unexpected question. Rehearsal on camera fixes both, and it is the one thing a student cannot practise alone.

Confirm the current component detail, timings and word ranges with your child's IB coordinator or the school's copy of the subject guide. The IB revises guides, and what is published on a tutoring page is no substitute for the document your child's teacher is working from.

A twenty-four-month budget for a DP1 starter

Spreading the cost across two years is cheaper than concentrating it in one term, and it produces a better grade. The table below is a planning model, not a quote: it maps what the hours do in each phase onto an indicative monthly band, using Bestimate's 2026 Dubai monthly estimates for weekly one-hour tutoring scaled by session count.

The shape matters more than the totals. DP1 runs at one session a week and is about building something to assess: vocabulary across the five themes, the present tense, then the near future and the perfect, then the first text types. A family that holds one session a week from September to June in DP1 arrives at DP2 needing maintenance rather than rescue, and maintenance is the cheap end of this market. Skipping DP1 entirely and planning to buy intensity in DP2 inverts the cost: more hours, at a higher rate, in a worse market.

The DP1 summer is the decision most families get wrong in both directions. Full-rate sessions through July and August are usually poor value, because retention work does not need a specialist. Dropping French completely for ten weeks is worse, because an ab initio student loses topic vocabulary fastest of any language candidate. A fortnightly thirty-minute retention session, or structured self-study with a marked task at the end of August, costs very little and saves four weeks of re-teaching in September.

DP2 is where spend rises, and it should. Two sessions a week from January to the May session is the standard pattern: one on papers, one on the oral. Budget separately for the oral intensive, because it lands in a scarce window at a premium rate, and book it before the school announces its recording dates rather than after. Build a buffer for mock season too, when every subject wants the same evenings.

The permit costs nothing, so an unpermitted tutor saves you nothing

  • Permit route: MoHRE private tuition work permit, Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • Cost to the tutor: free of charge, valid two years, two working days to issue
  • Apply through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system
  • No published fine schedule, so treat any quoted penalty figure as unverified

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18.

Read that against a quote. A tutor charging below the market floor is not charging less because they skipped a fee; there is no fee to skip. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no amount can honestly be quoted to you by anybody. What a parent can do is ask the question, because a tutor who holds the permit can say so in one sentence and a tutor who does not will change the subject.

There is a second rule worth knowing if you are in the habit of asking your child's own teacher. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for Abu Dhabi private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. That is press-reported rather than quoted from the current policy document, so verify it against ADEK before relying on it, but the direction is unambiguous: your child's own French teacher is the wrong person to pay privately.

A tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor: in Dubai that requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal. IB Gram does not hold one and does not operate premises in the UAE, which is why nothing on this page describes a centre, a branch or a licence we do not have. We ask tutors to hold the MoHRE permit, and we are explicit that doing so is not an endorsement by KHDA, MoHRE or anyone else.

07

Where French tutoring sits against Dubai school fees

Tutoring spend only makes sense next to the rest of the education bill, and Dubai gave families an unusual anchor this year. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For a family already at the top of its education budget, a flat fee year is the first chance in a while to redirect money rather than find more of it.

Supply is moving too. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places; six new schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose six per cent. More IB schools means more ab initio cohorts, and in the short term it also means more newly assembled language departments teaching a course for the first time. Both effects raise demand for outside language support, which is part of why specialist rates in this city have not softened.

Set against that, a single weekly French session at the middle of the market is a small line item on a Dubai education budget and a large one on a monthly cash-flow statement. The useful comparison is not tutoring against school fees but tutoring against the alternatives for the same money: a group class at a centre, a cheaper generalist tutor at twice the hours, or no support and a resit. A resit is the expensive outcome, and it costs a year as well as money.

One number nobody should give you is a VAT ruling. The UAE treatment of tuition fees is a question for the Federal Tax Authority, not a tutoring page, so ask any provider plainly whether the AED figure they quoted includes VAT and get the answer in writing. That single question has moved more quotes than any negotiation.

08

What a French ab initio tutor may not do

A tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback. A tutor does not produce assessed work. For French ab initio the internally assessed component is the individual oral, which the student performs and the school records, and there is no coursework a tutor could ghostwrite even if asked. Where the boundary bites is in the written tasks a student submits to their teacher as classwork or mock evidence, and in any TOK or Extended Essay work running alongside French in DP2.

What is legitimate is substantial. A tutor can set a task to the same brief as Paper 1 and mark it against the published criteria. A tutor can annotate the student's own writing, name the error pattern and teach the fix. A tutor can rehearse a photograph description, record it, and show the student where the sixty-second mark fell. A tutor can supply model answers written by the tutor and clearly labelled as models, for study rather than submission.

What is not legitimate is writing or rewriting a sentence the student will hand in as their own, drafting an Extended Essay, or sitting in on a recorded oral. IB academic honesty rules put the consequence on the student, not the tutor, which is why a provider who offers to help with submitted work is selling your child the risk and keeping the fee. One page in this market openly sells completed Internal Assessments; treat any offer in that direction as a reason to walk away.

We also will not sell you a grade. No tutor can promise a specific score in French ab initio, and anybody quoting a percentage of students who improved should be asked for the sample size, the dates and the method on the same page. What can be promised is specific work: a number of marked tasks, a number of recorded rehearsals, and a written note of where the marks are currently being lost.

Where you live in Dubai changes the cost of in-home tutoring and changes nothing about the cost of online tutoring. The notes below are about session timing, because the only real constraint on a live video lesson is what time your child gets through the door and sits down.

Oud Metha and Garhoud

Short school runs and an early finish mean a 4pm start is realistic here, which matters because the first slot of the afternoon is the cheapest to fill and the easiest to hold week after week through DP1.

Academic City and Dubai Silicon Oasis

Bus routes out to Academic City often put a student home after 4:30pm. A 5pm or 5:30pm slot works; a 4pm slot gets cancelled twice a month, and cancellations are what quietly inflate the cost per hour actually taught.

Al Barsha and The Greens

Dense with IB and British schools, so this is where in-home language tutors cluster and where their diaries fill first. Families here are often quoted the top of the in-home band simply because demand on those streets is highest.

Mirdif and Al Warqa'a

A long drive from the Sheikh Zayed Road tutor pool, which is exactly why in-home quotes to Mirdif carry the heaviest travel loading. Online removes that line item without changing the teaching.

Emirates Hills and Jumeirah Golf Estates

Villa communities where after-school activities run late into the evening. Sessions here are usually booked at 7pm or on a Saturday morning, and Saturday mornings are the slots French specialists lose first.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Apartment living, short commutes, and a lot of families who travel during school holidays. Holiday continuity matters more than start time here, and a tutor who can teach across a time-zone shift keeps the thread intact.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established francophone and bilingual-stream families, which makes French demand here steady rather than seasonal. It is the one part of Dubai where a parent may already know a French teacher privately and want a second opinion on level choice.

Dubai Hills Estate and Nad Al Sheba

New-build communities with a fast-growing school-age population; KHDA's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools and 16,846 places across the emirate, and areas like this absorb much of it. New schools mean new, small ab initio cohorts.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai IB Diploma schools our students attend

Students booking French ab initio support through IB Gram come from across the emirate's Diploma schools. Ab initio cohorts in these schools are often small, which is a strength in class and a problem when one student needs a different pace from the other six.

Francophone and bilingual schools in Dubai

Dubai has a long-established French-medium community, and its presence is why the city's French-teaching pool skews towards native speakers teaching the French national curriculum rather than the IB language acquisition guide. The two are not interchangeable, and the difference shows up in how written tasks are marked.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level question first

Before anything else, say where the French actually is: which MYP phase, how many years, whether the student can hold two minutes of speech. If the school has already placed your child in ab initio and the placement looks wrong, say that too, because it changes which tutor we look for.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, one per student

A single trial lesson at no charge and with no card details taken. It is a real lesson, not a sales call: the tutor runs a short diagnostic, teaches something, and tells you at the end what they think the starting point is. You decide afterwards whether to continue.

  3. 03

Agree the plan and the rate

We set out session length, frequency and the rate in writing, including whether written-task marking happens inside or outside the hour. Ninety-minute blocks and sibling pairing are priced here, not negotiated later, and the oral intensive is flagged as a separate block to book early.

  4. 04

    Teach, mark, record

Weekly sessions on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot. Written tasks go out between sessions and come back annotated against the criteria. Oral rehearsals are recorded so the student can rewatch them, which is the fastest route to fixing a description that runs out too soon.

  5. 05

    Review every half term

A short written note: what has been marked, what the error pattern is now, what changed since the last note. If the pattern has not moved, we change the approach or the tutor. Nothing in that note is a grade prediction, because a prediction is the school's job.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The price is explained, not hidden

Every AED figure on this page carries its source and the month it was read. Three of the pages competing for this search publish no price at all and two quote in dollars. You can check our market bands against any quote you receive, including ours.

A specialist rather than the nearest tutor

Online delivery means the match is made on subject and level, not on driving distance from your community. For a language with a small teaching pool in Dubai, that is the difference between a French ab initio specialist and a generalist who also speaks French.

Marking against the published criteria

Written tasks come back annotated against the assessment criteria rather than with a number at the top. Knowing that a task lost marks on text-type conventions rather than on grammar is what makes the next task better.

The oral treated as a component, not an afterthought

The individual oral is a quarter of the grade and the only part a student cannot revise alone. Rehearsals are recorded, reviewed and repeated across all five prescribed themes, and the intensive block is flagged early because the window is tight.

Honest about what we do not do

No home visits anywhere in the UAE, no premises in Dubai, no regulator endorsement, no grade promises, and no help with work your child must submit as their own. Each of those is a thing some provider in this market claims.

Scheduling built around a Dubai week

Sessions are set on Gulf Standard Time around school-run timings, activity schedules and the Ramadan calendar, including post-Iftar slots when families ask for them. A slot that survives the term is worth more than a cheaper slot that does not.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does an IB DP French ab initio tutor in Dubai cost per hour?+

Market rates read in October 2026 put a qualified language teacher working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour in Dubai, and an IB-experienced language acquisition specialist at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. In-home visits across the emirate run AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is inside the fee, and a small premium tier quotes AED 500 to AED 650. Those are the market's numbers, drawn from published provider rate cards and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, not an IB Gram price list. Our own rate depends on the match and is agreed in writing after the free trial lesson.

Is French ab initio cheaper to tutor than French B?+

Usually yes, by a modest margin, and for a reason worth understanding. Ab initio is Standard Level only and carries no literary works, so there is no literature component to teach and the written tasks are shorter. French B at Higher Level requires two works of literature and longer written responses, which both lengthens preparation and narrows the pool of tutors who can mark it. In practice a Dubai family pays a similar hourly rate but needs fewer hours for ab initio in DP1. The exception is a late start: an ab initio student beginning in DP2 needs more hours than a French B student who is merely behind.

Does a native French speaker charge more in Dubai than a non-native teacher?+

Typically AED 30 to AED 80 an hour more, and the premium is about scarcity rather than teaching quality. Dubai's francophone teaching pool is sized around the French national curriculum community, so a native speaker who also knows how Paper 1 is marked against the IB criteria is genuinely uncommon here. For a beginner in DP1 that premium buys very little, because the first year is vocabulary, sound-to-spelling work and the present tense, all of which a well-qualified non-native teacher handles accurately. For DP2 oral rehearsal, where the student needs to hear natural pace and unscripted questions, it buys something real.

How many hours of French ab initio tutoring does a DP1 student actually need?+

One session a week through DP1, lifted to two a week from January of DP2, is the pattern that works for most Dubai students, plus a short block of three to six sessions for the individual oral before the school's recording window. That is roughly sixty to eighty hours across the two years. Families who compress the same spend into the final six months need more hours overall, pay a higher rate because they are buying in a scarce window, and get less from them, because ab initio marks depend on vocabulary breadth that takes months rather than weeks to build.

Why does a ninety-minute French session cost less per hour than a sixty-minute one?+

Because a language session has fixed overheads. Settling in, retrieving last week's vocabulary and warming up into French take roughly the same ten to fifteen minutes whatever the length of the lesson. In a sixty-minute slot that is a quarter of the time; in ninety minutes it is a sixth, so more of what you pay for is teaching. Tutors recognise this and typically price ninety-minute blocks AED 10 to AED 40 an hour below their hourly rate. The limit is attention: for a DP1 beginner, ninety minutes is usually the ceiling before quality falls away.

Can two siblings share one French ab initio session to cut the cost?+

Yes, and it reduces the per-student cost by roughly a quarter to two-fifths, but only when both students are genuinely at a similar stage. Two DP1 beginners who started the same course in the same term work well in one block. A DP1 beginner paired with a DP2 candidate preparing an individual oral does not, because the oral rehearsal is personal to the photograph and the themes chosen, and one student ends up watching. Ask for an honest assessment after the trial lesson rather than assuming the pairing will hold for two years.

Does an AED rate quoted by a Dubai tutor include VAT?+

Ask, and get the answer in writing. The UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority rather than something a tutoring page should rule on, and providers in this market handle it differently: some quote inclusive figures, some add it, and some are not registered. The practical question for a parent is simple and specific: is the number you just gave me the number I will pay each month, and does it include VAT? Any provider who cannot answer that in a sentence has told you something useful about how they run their billing.

Is my child eligible for French ab initio if they studied French in Year 9?+

Possibly not, and this is worth resolving before DP1 subject choices lock. Ab initio is designed for students with little or no prior experience of the language, and schools are expected to place students on genuine prior learning rather than preference. A student who completed two or three years of MYP French at Phase 2 or above is usually a French B SL candidate. A student who did a year, stopped, and arrived in Dubai from a different curriculum may legitimately be an ab initio candidate. A single diagnostic hour, covering two minutes of speech, a short read-aloud and eighty words of writing, settles it clearly enough for the school to act on.

What does the individual oral add in preparation hours?+

Budget three to six focused sessions, concentrated in the four to six weeks before the school records. The oral is worth 25 per cent, the same as each paper, and it is the only component a student cannot practise alone. Those sessions cover photograph description across all five prescribed themes, the discussion that follows, and the general conversation that reaches into a second theme. Rehearsals are recorded so the student can see exactly where a description ran out of material. Book the block before the school announces its recording dates, because specialist diaries in Dubai fill as soon as those dates are published.

Do French ab initio rates in Dubai rise closer to the May session?+

Yes, and the rise is sharper for languages than for most subjects because the oral windows concentrate demand into a few weeks. Late bookings into the oral window are commonly quoted AED 20 to AED 60 an hour above the ordinary rate, and the best-matched specialists are simply unavailable rather than more expensive. Mock season produces a second, smaller spike. A family booking oral rehearsal in November pays the ordinary rate and gets a choice of tutors; the same family booking in March pays the scarcity rate and takes whoever is free.

How do I check that a French tutor in Dubai holds the MoHRE private tuition permit?+

Ask directly, and ask early. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system with a two-working-day completion time listed on MoHRE's own service page. Because there is no fee, a tutor charging below market has not saved money by skipping it. A permit holder can confirm the position in one sentence. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted penalty figure as unverified.

What happens to the price if no French ab initio specialist is free?+

We say so rather than substituting quietly. French ab initio is a narrow specialism and Dubai's pool is small, so there are weeks when nobody suitable is available at the slot you need. The options we put in front of you are an alternative slot with the right specialist, a French B tutor who has taught ab initio and can cover the shorter written tasks, or a wait with a date attached. Where the fallback tutor is outside the UAE, the lesson still runs on Gulf Standard Time and the rate is stated before you agree. What we will not do is fill the slot with a generalist and let you find out in week three.

Is online French tutoring in Dubai genuinely cheaper than a home visit?+

On the published bands, yes: AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified online teacher against AED 180 to AED 500 for an in-home visit with travel inside the fee. The gap widens for outer communities, where a tutor spends forty to ninety minutes driving. The more important difference is which tutor you can reach. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we provide only in India. For a subject with a small teaching pool, online delivery means the match is made on French ab initio experience rather than on who lives within a twenty-minute drive.

Can a French ab initio tutor correct the work my child hands in?+

A tutor can mark work your child has written, annotate it against the assessment criteria, name the error pattern and teach the fix. A tutor cannot write or rewrite sentences that will be submitted as your child's own, and will not draft an Extended Essay or a TOK essay. For French ab initio the internally assessed component is the recorded individual oral, which the student performs alone with their teacher, so there is no coursework to ghostwrite in any case. IB academic honesty rules put the consequence on the student, which is why any provider offering to help with submitted work is selling your family the risk.

How does the KHDA fee freeze change what we can spend on tutoring?+

KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For a family at the limit of its education budget, that is the first flat year in a while and the first chance to redirect rather than find money. A single weekly French session at the middle of the market sits in the AED 600 to AED 1,200 monthly band on Bestimate's 2026 estimates, which for many Dubai households is now a reallocation rather than an increase.

Start with the diagnostic, then decide what to spend

The cheapest hour in a French ab initio engagement is the first one, because it tells you what you are actually buying: whether the level is right, whether the gap is vocabulary or text types, and how many sessions a week the two years really need. Book the free trial lesson, one per student with no card details taken, and the tutor will run that diagnostic and say plainly what they think. You will get a rate in writing, the market bands on this page to check it against, and an honest answer about availability. Nobody in this market can promise your child a grade in French ab initio, and we will not. We can tell you where the marks are going now.
