IB DP Physics HL Online Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP physics HL online tutor in Dubai has to teach the course as it is assessed now: two hours of Paper 1, split between forty multiple-choice questions and a data-analysis section, two and a half hours of Paper 2, and a scientific investigation marked out of 24. This page sets out the five themes, the Higher Level content inside each of them, and the places Dubai students lose marks they already knew how to earn. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

What Physics HL assesses, component by component

IB Diploma Physics at Higher Level is 240 teaching hours assessed by two examination papers and one internally assessed investigation. Paper 1 lasts two hours and carries 36% of the grade, and it is two different examinations in one booklet: Paper 1A, forty multiple-choice questions across the whole syllabus, and Paper 1B, a set of data-based and experimental questions. Paper 2 lasts two and a half hours and carries 44%, in short-answer and extended-response form. The investigation carries the remaining 20%.

That structure is recent enough that a great deal of advice circulating about IB Physics is wrong. The course taught until 2024 had eleven numbered topics and a choice of options; the current one has five themes, lettered A to E, each with its own Higher Level extension, plus a strand of tools and an inquiry process that run through all of them. A tutor describing options, or a student revising from a parent's downloaded topic list, is preparing for an examination that no longer exists.

The five themes are Space, time and motion; The particulate nature of matter; Wave behaviour; Fields; and Nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level does not add a sixth theme. It deepens each of the five, which is why a student cannot drop to Standard Level by simply ignoring part of the syllabus, and why the HL content tends to arrive late in DP2 when time has already run short. Knowing which HL extensions remain untaught in February is the most useful piece of information a Dubai family can have, and it is a question the subject teacher can answer in one email.

Marks in this subject are rarely lost for not knowing physics. They are lost on the data section, where uncertainties, gradients and error bars are treated as an afterthought; on command terms, where a student explains when the question said determine, or states when it asked them to justify; and on the arithmetic of unit prefixes and significant figures. Each of those is a narrow, teachable discipline rather than a gap in understanding, which is why targeted hours work better in Physics than general revision does.

The sections below work through the assessment in order: the components and what each tests, the themes and their HL extensions, Paper 1B in detail, the command terms and what each one owes a mark, the investigation's four criteria, the mathematics the course assumes, and how practical work is handled when lessons are delivered remotely. Lessons for Dubai families run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; that is a service we provide only in India, and the section on practical work explains exactly what that does and does not mean for a laboratory subject.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics HL sits at the end of a sequence, and what a student brings into it determines which part of the assessment hurts. The three stages below describe the preparation each one gives for the components above, and where the predictable shortfall sits.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Higher Level Physics is one of the heavier Diploma subjects by content, and its three assessed components demand different preparation. Paper 1A rewards breadth and speed. Paper 1B rewards a specific set of data-handling routines. Paper 2 rewards structured writing against command terms. A revision plan that treats the subject as one thing, usually by rereading notes, prepares for none of them well, and that is the commonest way a capable student underperforms here.

Dubai Diploma cohorts are small relative to the emirate's British-curriculum population, with the International Baccalaureate at 7 per cent of private school enrolment against 37 per cent for UK curricula. Physics HL groups in a Dubai school are often a handful of students, which has an upside and a downside: teachers know every student, but there is rarely a second specialist to turn to when a theme has not landed and the timetable has moved on.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences assesses against four criteria, and criterion C, processing and evaluating, is the direct ancestor of Paper 1B and of the investigation's data-analysis mark. A student with strong MYP criterion C work arrives in Physics HL already able to handle gradients, anomalies and uncertainty in a basic form. One with strong knowledge marks and weak processing marks will struggle with exactly the components that are hardest to fix late.

Dubai's IB continuum schools run MYP Sciences through to MYP 5 before the Diploma split, and the decision between Physics HL and SL is usually taken then. The useful evidence at that point is a marked criterion C task rather than an overall grade, because it predicts performance on the data section far better than a report comment does.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE to Physics HL bridge

IGCSE Physics covers much of the same ground as theme A and parts of themes B and C, but at a different level of abstraction and with far less emphasis on uncertainty. The gap into Physics HL is mathematical as much as conceptual: trigonometry in two dimensions, logarithms for decay and intensity, and algebraic rearrangement under time pressure. Students who bridge that in the summer before DP1 report an easier first term.

Most Physics HL students in Dubai arrive from IGCSE, since UK curricula dominate enrolment in the emirate. Cambridge and Pearson both run their International GCSE Physics series in the summer and in November, and a student who sat the November series arrives in DP1 with a shorter gap and fresher practical experience than one whose last physics examination was in June.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics HL is the subject in the URL. The grid below shows it alongside the Diploma subjects Dubai students most often take with it, with each entry written around the component that decides the grade rather than the subject's general reputation.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes with Higher Level extensions inside each, assessed by Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data analysis, Paper 2 extended response and a 24-mark investigation. HL adds ninety guide hours of depth rather than a sixth theme, which is why HL content tends to arrive late in DP2.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Built on the same assessment model as Physics: Paper 1A and 1B, Paper 2, and the same four-criterion investigation. The shared skill is quantitative discipline, and a student losing marks on unit prefixes in Physics is usually losing them on moles in Chemistry for the same reason.

Biology

HL and SL

Also assessed on the current sciences model, with the heaviest extended-response load of the three. Statistical treatment of data, error bars and correlation overlaps directly with Paper 1B in Physics, so one data session often serves both subjects.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The mathematics Physics HL assumes sits mostly in AA: trigonometric identities, logarithms, calculus notation and algebraic rearrangement at speed. A student weak in AA algebra will lose Physics marks that look like physics errors and are not.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

AI pairs with Physics HL less naturally but workably, with its statistics block supporting data analysis well. The gap to watch is manipulation without technology, since Physics examinations expect algebraic fluency the AI course does not drill as hard.

Computer Science

HL and SL

A common partner subject for Physics HL students heading into engineering. The solution component carries its own development record, and the computational thinking it builds transfers usefully to modelling questions in theme A and theme D.

Design Technology

HL and SL

The design cycle produces a heavy internal workload alongside the Physics investigation, which is a scheduling problem more than an academic one. Families taking both should map the two internal deadlines against each other in DP1 rather than in DP2.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Shares energy and systems content with theme B and theme E, and its data questions reward the same treatment of uncertainty. A useful second science for a Physics HL student who does not want a third laboratory subject.

Economics

HL and SL

A frequent third subject for Dubai Physics HL students aiming at engineering or finance routes. The quantitative HL paper benefits from the same graph-reading discipline that Paper 1B demands, and the internal commentaries are a different kind of writing practice.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements built around the three components, because Physics HL is not one preparation task. All three start with a free trial lesson, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue afterwards.

A Paper 1B data block

Three or four sessions on uncertainties, gradients, error bars, linearising a relationship and reading an experimental description well enough to criticise it. This is the narrowest, most teachable part of the whole course and the part most students have never practised separately, which is why it is the first block we usually recommend.

  • Uncertainty propagation and significant figures drilled to a routine
  • Gradient and intercept interpretation with units stated every time
  • Experimental descriptions critiqued rather than summarised

Weekly one-to-one on the themes and their HL extensions

A fixed Gulf Standard Time slot following the school's teaching sequence, with the Higher Level extensions treated as named content rather than as extra difficulty. Written work is set and returned marked against command terms. The weekly rhythm is what keeps theme D and theme E from arriving all at once in the final term.

  • Follows the school's own order of teaching
  • HL extensions tracked explicitly theme by theme
  • Extended responses marked against the command term used

An investigation block, student-led

Sessions built around the scientific investigation: narrowing a research question, checking the method can produce enough data, and reading a draft against the four criteria. The student designs it, runs it, processes it and writes it. We ask questions and teach technique on other examples; nothing in the submitted report comes from us.

  • Research question narrowed before any data is collected
  • Uncertainty and processing plan checked before the practical, not after
  • Draft read against criteria A to D by letter

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The three components, and what each one is really testing

Physics HL is assessed by Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and the scientific investigation at 20%. Paper 1 runs for two hours and contains two distinct sections: 1A, forty multiple-choice questions spread across the whole syllabus, and 1B, data-based and experimental questions. Paper 2 runs for two and a half hours of short-answer and extended-response questions. Those three components reward three different kinds of preparation, and the single biggest planning error in this subject is treating them as one.

Paper 1A tests breadth and recall speed. A student with a reliable grasp of every theme but slow recall will run out of time; one with deep knowledge of three themes and gaps in two will lose marks they cannot recover elsewhere, because the questions sample everything. Preparation for 1A is therefore about coverage and pace: short, frequent, mixed-topic sets rather than long sessions on one theme.

Paper 1B tests whether a student can handle data and criticise an experiment. It is the most predictable section on the paper, because the skills repeat: read a table, decide what to plot, draw a line, find a gradient with units, estimate an uncertainty, identify a systematic error, suggest an improvement. Almost every student can learn those routines; most have never been taught them as a set.

Paper 2 tests structured physics writing under time pressure, and the command term in each question is the instruction about how many marks the answer owes. A two-mark state question wants two facts. A four-mark explain question wants a causal chain. A discuss question wants both sides and a judgement. Students who write everything they know, in the same register, for every question, lose marks on long questions while writing far too much on short ones.

The five themes, and what Higher Level adds inside each one

The current Physics course is organised into five themes rather than numbered topics. Theme A covers space, time and motion: kinematics, forces, momentum, work and energy, and at Higher Level the rotational and relativistic extensions. Theme B covers the particulate nature of matter: thermal physics, gas laws, current and circuits, with HL depth on thermodynamics. Theme C covers wave behaviour, including simple harmonic motion, which at Higher Level becomes a quantitative treatment rather than a descriptive one.

Theme D covers fields: gravitational, electric and magnetic, with the Higher Level extension handling field potential and orbital motion in quantitative detail. Theme E covers nuclear and quantum physics: structure of the atom, radioactive decay, fission and fusion, and at Higher Level the quantum and particle content that most students meet last. Running through all five are the tools, experimental technique, technology and mathematics, and the inquiry process that the investigation formalises.

The practical consequence of this architecture is a timing problem specific to Higher Level. Because HL depth is distributed across all five themes rather than gathered into a sixth, a school that falls behind in theme A in DP1 carries that debt into every subsequent theme. By February of DP2 it is common to find a student who has met every theme but not the HL extension of two of them, usually in themes D and E. That is a precise, fixable deficit, and naming it is the first job of a diagnostic session.

The table is the document we build first with any new Physics HL student. It is not a revision timetable; it is an audit of what has actually been taught, what has been examined internally, and what remains. Families are often surprised by how much of the subject is secure and how narrow the real gap is, which usually means fewer hours than they expected rather than more.

Paper 1B: the data section almost nobody revises

  • Identify variables before reading the question stem twice
  • Linearise: plot the quantity that produces a straight line
  • Always state the units of a gradient and what it represents physically
  • Propagate percentage uncertainties rather than quoting them separately
  • Make every suggested improvement specific to this apparatus

Paper 1B is a data-based and experimental section inside Paper 1, and it is the most systematically under-prepared part of Physics HL. Students revise content for Paper 1A and essays for Paper 2 and then meet 1B cold, treating it as a quiz about an experiment they have never performed. It is not that. It is a test of a fixed set of routines, and the routines are short enough to list on one page and drill in three sessions.

The routines are these. Read the table and identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables. Decide what to plot to produce a straight line, which often means plotting a square, a reciprocal or a logarithm rather than the raw quantity. Draw the line and extract a gradient with its units, then say what the gradient physically represents. Estimate an absolute and a percentage uncertainty and propagate it through a calculation. Distinguish a random error from a systematic one by looking at the shape of the data rather than guessing.

The last routine is the one that separates grades: suggesting an improvement that is specific enough to be worth a mark. A student who writes repeat the experiment and take an average has written a sentence that applies to every experiment ever conducted and earns nothing. A student who writes that the thermometer should be replaced with a thermocouple because the response time is comparable to the cooling interval has identified something about this experiment. Teaching that distinction is a matter of practising criticism, not of learning more physics.

Significant figures and unit prefixes belong here too, and they are the quietest marks lost in this subject. An answer correct to five figures where the data supports two is penalised; a milli confused with a micro turns a right answer into a wrong one. These are habits of transcription rather than understanding, which means they respond to a checking routine applied under timed conditions rather than to further explanation.

04

Command terms on Paper 2, and the marks each one owes

Every question on Paper 2 opens with a command term, and that term is an instruction about the shape and length of the answer. The IB groups them by assessment objective: terms like state, outline, list and label sit at the recall end; explain, calculate, determine, compare and distinguish sit in the middle; evaluate, discuss, justify and sketch sit at the analytical end. A student who treats all of them as invitations to write what they know will systematically overwrite short questions and underwrite long ones.

The pattern in marked Dubai scripts is consistent. State questions attract paragraphs where one clause was wanted, costing time that the long questions then lack. Explain questions receive a description of what happens with no causal link, which collects the knowledge mark and loses the reasoning one. Determine questions receive an answer with no working, which forfeits method credit entirely. Discuss questions receive one side of the argument and no judgement, which caps the mark whatever the physics is worth.

Teaching this is quick and measurable. Take a marked script, count the marks lost to command-term mismatch rather than to physics, and the number is usually larger than the family expects. Then practise answers to a stopwatch with the mark allocation visible: two marks, two points, thirty seconds; four marks, a chain of four linked statements, ninety seconds. Within three or four sessions the register changes, and the gain shows up across every topic at once rather than in one theme.

Sketch deserves a specific mention because it is routinely misread as draw. A sketch question wants the correct shape, the correct intercepts and the correct asymptotic behaviour, labelled, without a scale. Students either produce an accurate plotted graph they had no time for, or a vague curve with nothing labelled. Both lose marks that were available to anyone who knew what the term asks for.

05

The scientific investigation: 24 marks across four criteria

The scientific investigation is the internally assessed component, worth 20% of the Physics HL grade and marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The report has a limit of 3,000 words and around ten hours of class time are allocated to it. Those four criteria are the whole of the mark scheme, and a student who knows them by letter writes a different report from one who is working from a general sense of what a lab write-up looks like.

Research design is where most marks are lost, and they are lost before any apparatus is touched. A research question that is too broad produces data that cannot support a conclusion; one with no measurable dependent variable produces no data at all. The fix is a session spent narrowing the question and checking that the method can generate enough points across a wide enough range, with the uncertainty of each measurement estimated in advance rather than discovered afterwards.

Data analysis rewards correct processing and honest treatment of uncertainty, including propagation through to the final result and error bars that mean something. Conclusion rewards an answer to the stated research question, compared against accepted physics with a source. Evaluation rewards identification of real weaknesses in this method and improvements specific to it. A report that evaluates by saying human error affected the results scores poorly, whatever the physics behind it.

The boundary on paid support here is the same across this site and it is worth stating in full. A tutor may teach a technique on a different experiment, ask what a graph shows, question whether a research question is answerable, and point out where a reader cannot follow the method. The student designs the investigation, collects the data, processes it and types the report. Nothing in the submitted file comes from us, and any provider selling a finished investigation is selling a malpractice case that lands on the candidate.

The mathematics Physics HL assumes, and the AA or AI question

Physics HL assumes a working fluency that the mathematics courses deliver at different points. Resolving vectors needs confident trigonometry. Decay and intensity problems need logarithms handled without hesitation. Field and potential questions need algebraic rearrangement of expressions with several variables, done quickly and correctly under time pressure. The Higher Level extensions push further, and a student who is slow at the algebra will read as slow at physics, because the two are indistinguishable from a marked script.

That is the practical core of the AA versus AI question for a Dubai Physics HL student. Analysis and Approaches drills manipulation harder, and its Paper 1 is sat without technology, which builds exactly the fluency Physics rewards. Applications and Interpretation has a much larger statistics block, 36 of 150 guide hours at Standard Level, which supports data analysis well but drills manual algebra less. Neither course disqualifies a student from Physics HL, and plenty do the subject well from AI.

What we will not do is tell you which combination a particular university requires. Entry requirements differ by institution, by faculty and by year, and a tutoring page asserting them would be guessing with somebody's application. Read the published requirements for the specific course, and if your child needs their certificate attested in the UAE afterwards, check the Ministry of Education equivalency conditions through the official channel rather than through any tutoring provider.

Where the mathematics is the real constraint, the honest recommendation is often fewer physics hours and more mathematics ones. A student losing Physics marks to rearrangement errors does not need more physics taught; they need twenty minutes of algebra at the start of each session until the rearrangement stops being the slow step. We say that at the diagnostic rather than after a term of physics teaching that was never the problem.

07

Practical work when the lessons are delivered online

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video, on a shared screen where tutor and student work on the same page, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai. Home visits are a service we provide only in India, and no sentence on this site should suggest otherwise to a family in this emirate. For a laboratory subject that raises a fair question, and it deserves a direct answer rather than a reassurance.

The practical work itself belongs to the school and stays there. Your child's apparatus, laboratory access and supervision come from their own teacher, and that is as it should be: the investigation must be their own work carried out under their school's conditions. What an online tutor contributes is everything around the bench. Designing the investigation before the session in the lab. Deciding what to measure and how many times. Processing the data afterwards, which is where most of the 24 marks actually sit.

For Paper 1B, remote delivery is arguably better than the alternative. The section tests the analysis of experimental data rather than the manipulation of equipment, and analysis is exactly what a shared screen supports: the same table of results in front of both people, the same graph being drawn and corrected, the gradient calculated twice because the first attempt dropped a unit. A tutor sitting beside a student on a sofa has no better tool for that than a shared document, and usually a worse one.

The supply argument matters in Physics more than in most subjects. Higher Level Physics groups in Dubai schools are small, and the pool of tutors who have taught the current five-theme guide and marked investigations against the four criteria is smaller still. Requiring a specialist to live within a tolerable drive of your community narrows that pool sharply. If no Physics HL specialist is free in the slot you need, we will say so and offer a different time or a tutor in another time zone, rather than substituting a general science tutor at the same rate.

08

Dubai schools, inspection bands and what a small HL cohort means

  • KHDA inspection reports are public and free; read your school's band before drawing conclusions
  • Higher Level Physics groups in Dubai schools are frequently under ten students
  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are mandatory alongside the Diploma
  • Private tutors need a MoHRE permit, free for two years under Resolution 710 of 2023
  • If no Physics HL specialist is free in your slot, we say so rather than substituting one

Private schools in Dubai are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Inspection outcomes are published on a six-band scale running from Outstanding down to Very Weak, and those reports are free to read. For a Physics HL family they are context rather than a verdict: a school in a strong band can still have a thin Higher Level Physics cohort and a teacher covering several subjects.

The emirate's scale explains why. Dubai had 387,441 private school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen curricula, with UK curricula at 37 per cent of students, Indian at 26, American at 14 and the International Baccalaureate at 7. A Diploma Physics HL group inside that distribution is often three to eight students. That brings real advantages in teacher attention and a real fragility: when one theme does not land, there is rarely a second specialist in the building to re-teach it.

Supply is also shifting. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four following UK curricula and three offering the International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. More IB provision means more Higher Level science cohorts competing for the same specialist teachers, which tends to show up first as scheduling pressure rather than as anything visible in a report.

Two further points belong on any page about tutoring in this emirate. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, so a Physics HL student's week is fuller than a Physics HL timetable suggests. And anyone charging for private tuition in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. IB Gram holds no regulator permit, operates no premises here, and claims no endorsement from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Physics HL groups in Dubai schools are small, so the subject is one where a family may be looking outside their own community for a specialist. The notes below describe what each area means in practice for a weekly Physics slot and for access to a school laboratory.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

A concentration of Diploma schools within a short radius, so laboratory access after school is often practical here. Physics HL students in this corridor can usually arrange a supervised lab session with their own teacher more easily than elsewhere.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Villa communities feeding the western school corridor, with an early finish that makes a 4pm slot workable. That matters in Physics, where a full Paper 1 under timed conditions needs an uninterrupted two hours.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Tower living with short school commutes and crowded evenings. Shorter, more frequent Physics sessions tend to work better here than one long weekly block, particularly for data-section drilling.

Mirdif

An eastern family district served by IB continuum schools with their own laboratory timetables. The long crossing to the western corridor is the reason families here look for a specialist online rather than nearby.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

University and school provision side by side, so science resources are unusually accessible. Evening slots fill early because the student population is dense, which makes booking in the first week of term worthwhile.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established coastal districts with a mix of British and IB provision. Physics HL students here often take the subject in small groups of three or four, which is where a weekly one-to-one hour does the most work.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer family communities with growing Diploma cohorts and mock timetables still settling. We ask for the school's published dates each term here rather than assuming last year's calendar still applies.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

The western Diploma corridor

Schools from Al Sufouh through Al Barsha to the Marina, several running Physics at Higher Level in small groups. Students we support in this corridor most often ask for the HL extensions in themes D and E, which are the ones that arrive last in the teaching sequence.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Audit what has actually been taught

The first session builds a theme-by-theme audit: which of the five themes are complete, which Higher Level extensions remain, and what has been examined internally so far. Families are usually surprised how narrow the real gap is, which generally means fewer hours rather than more.

  2. 02

    Take the free trial lesson

One lesson, free, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue. Your child works with the tutor we actually propose, on their own most recent Physics work. The session ends with a short written note on what it found, which you keep either way.

Fix the component the hours target

Paper 1A coverage, Paper 1B data technique, Paper 2 command terms or the investigation. One of those, named in writing, with an estimate of sessions. A plan that says Physics is not a plan, and it is how a term of hours disappears without a measurable change.

  4. 04

Drill under timed conditions from week two

Physics marks are lost to pace and transcription as much as to understanding, and neither shows up in untimed practice. From the second session onward, part of every hour runs against a clock with the mark allocation visible, because that is the condition the examination actually tests.

  5. 05

Review at six weeks against the audit

We return to the theme audit and the component plan, mark off what has closed and decide whether to continue, change the target, or stop. Stopping is a legitimate outcome in a subject where one narrow deficit is often the whole problem.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught to the guide in force now

Five themes with Higher Level extensions, Paper 1A and 1B, and a 24-mark investigation across four criteria. A great deal of IB Physics advice online still describes eleven topics and optional units, which belonged to a course that was last examined in 2024.

Paper 1B treated as its own discipline

Uncertainty, gradients, linearisation and specific experimental criticism are drilled as a set of routines rather than mentioned in passing. It is the most teachable part of the course and the part most students have never practised separately.

Command terms taught by what they owe

A two-mark state question and a four-mark explain question need different answers, and most marks lost on Paper 2 in marked Dubai scripts are lost to that mismatch rather than to physics. It is quick to fix and the gain appears across every theme at once.

The investigation stays the student's own

They design it, run it, process it and write it. We teach technique on other experiments and ask questions about theirs. Finished investigations are sold in this market for thousands of dirhams, and under IB rules it is the candidate who carries the consequence.

No university entry requirements invented

We will not tell you which mathematics course a named university expects alongside Physics HL, because requirements differ by institution, faculty and year. Read the published requirement for the specific course, and verify any UAE equivalency through the official channel.

An honest answer on availability

The pool of tutors who have taught the current Physics guide and marked investigations to the four criteria is not large. If nobody is free in your slot we say so and offer an alternative time or time zone, rather than putting a general science tutor in the chair.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does IB DP Physics HL assess under the syllabus taught now?+

Five themes rather than numbered topics, assessed by three components. Paper 1 runs two hours and carries 36%, split between 1A, forty multiple-choice questions, and 1B, data-based and experimental questions. Paper 2 runs two and a half hours for 44% in short-answer and extended-response form. The scientific investigation is internally assessed, marked out of 24 across four criteria, and worth 20%. Advice describing eleven topics and option units refers to the course last examined in 2024 and should be set aside.

How is Physics HL Paper 1 split between multiple choice and data?+

Paper 1A is forty multiple-choice questions sampling the whole syllabus, and Paper 1B is a set of data-based and experimental questions. They sit inside the same two-hour paper and together make up 36% of the grade. The two halves need different preparation: 1A rewards coverage and recall speed across all five themes, while 1B rewards a fixed set of data routines. Practising only content revision prepares a student for one of them and leaves the other to chance.

What is the HL-only content in each Physics theme?+

Higher Level does not add a sixth theme; it deepens all five. Theme A gains rotational dynamics and the relativistic treatment. Theme B gains quantitative thermodynamics. Theme C turns a descriptive treatment of oscillation into a quantitative one. Theme D goes further into field potential, orbital motion and induction. Theme E adds quantum and particle content. Because the depth is distributed rather than gathered at the end, a school running late in DP1 carries that debt through every later theme, which is why a theme audit is the first thing worth doing.

Where do Physics HL students lose the most marks on Paper 2?+

On command terms rather than on physics. State questions receive paragraphs where a clause was wanted, which costs the time that longer questions then lack. Explain questions receive descriptions with no causal chain, collecting the knowledge mark and losing the reasoning one. Determine questions receive bare answers with no working, forfeiting method credit. Discuss questions receive one side and no judgement. Counting those losses on a marked script usually produces a bigger number than families expect, and the register is quick to retrain.

How many marks is the Physics scientific investigation worth?+

Twenty-four marks, split evenly across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It carries 20% of the final grade and the report is limited to 3,000 words, with around ten hours of class time allocated. Most of the marks that go missing are lost in research design, before any apparatus is touched, because a question that is too broad cannot produce data that supports a conclusion. One session narrowing the question is the highest-value hour in the whole process.

Does my child need Maths AA HL to cope with Physics HL?+

No, and plenty of students take Physics HL successfully alongside Applications and Interpretation. What Physics HL does require is fluency: resolving vectors with confident trigonometry, handling logarithms for decay and intensity without hesitation, and rearranging multi-variable expressions quickly under time pressure. Analysis and Approaches drills that manipulation harder, partly because its Paper 1 bans technology. If the mathematics is the slow step, the useful fix is often twenty minutes of algebra inside each physics session rather than a course change.

Can an online tutor help with Physics practical work?+

With everything except the bench itself, which belongs to the school. Apparatus, laboratory access and supervision come from your child's own teacher, and the investigation has to be their own work under their school's conditions. What a tutor contributes is the design before the lab session and the processing afterwards, which is where most of the 24 marks sit. For Paper 1B, a shared screen with the same table of data in front of both people is a better tool than sitting side by side with one printout.

What do the command terms determine and show that require in Physics?+

Determine asks for a numerical answer reached by visible working, usually with units and an appropriate number of significant figures; an answer with no working forfeits the method marks even when the number is right. Show that asks the student to arrive at a given result, which means every step between the starting point and the stated answer has to appear, since the answer itself is already printed and earns nothing. Both terms reward written working rather than mental arithmetic, and both punish the student who skips lines.

How long is Physics HL Paper 2 and how should the time be split?+

Two and a half hours, carrying 44% of the grade in short-answer and extended-response questions. The workable rule is to spend time in proportion to marks, which sounds obvious and is routinely ignored: students over-invest in early short questions and then rush the extended responses where the most marks sit. Practising with the mark allocation visible and a clock running changes that behaviour faster than any amount of content revision, and it is the single most transferable habit a Paper 2 session can build.

What is the word limit on the Physics investigation report?+

Three thousand words. That limit is generous for a well-designed investigation and punishing for a badly scoped one, because a student whose research question was too broad ends up describing instead of analysing. The sections that routinely run long are the background theory and the method, neither of which carries many marks; the sections that run short are data analysis and evaluation, which carry twelve marks between them. Reading a draft against the four criteria usually reveals that imbalance immediately.

Which Physics HL theme is usually taught last in Dubai schools?+

Theme E, nuclear and quantum physics, and often the Higher Level extension of theme D, fields. Both arrive in DP2 when internal deadlines, mocks and the investigation are competing for the same weeks, so they get the least settling time and the least practice. Asking the school where they are in the sequence, rather than assuming the syllabus order, is worth doing in January. A student with two untaught HL extensions has a precise and fixable deficit rather than a general weakness.

Is Physics HL harder than Chemistry HL for a Dubai student?+

They are hard differently, and the better question is which one suits your child. Physics HL concentrates difficulty in mathematical manipulation and in multi-step reasoning across unfamiliar contexts. Chemistry HL concentrates it in breadth of content and in precise quantitative chains. Both run on the same assessment model, with Paper 1A and 1B, Paper 2 and a 24-mark investigation. A student strong at algebra and weak at memorising usually finds Physics the better fit, and the reverse holds too.

How much uncertainty and error analysis does Physics HL need?+

More than most students practise and less than they fear. The working set is small: absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through multiplication, division and powers, uncertainty in a gradient, and the distinction between random and systematic error read from the shape of the data. That set appears in Paper 1B and carries six of the investigation's marks under data analysis. Three focused sessions cover it for both components, which makes it one of the highest-return blocks of hours available in this subject.

Can my child drop Physics HL to SL part-way through DP1?+

That is a decision for the school, not for a tutor, and it depends on timetabling, the diploma requirements your child is working to and how far the cohort has travelled. What we can offer is evidence for the conversation: a theme-by-theme audit of what is secure, a marked timed paper, and an honest view of whether the gap is content or mathematics. Schools in Dubai set their own deadlines for level changes, so ask the Diploma coordinator early rather than after the next report.

What should a Physics HL student do with past papers from the old syllabus?+

Use them selectively and with a tutor who knows the difference. Questions on themes that carried over largely unchanged, much of kinematics, circuits and waves, remain good practice. Questions from the retired option units are wasted effort, and the old paper structure does not match the current 1A and 1B split. Marking a pre-2025 paper as though it were the current examination teaches the wrong pacing. We work from your child's own attempts rather than redistributing board material, which is the IB's to publish.

Start with a theme audit and a free hour

The useful first step in Physics HL is finding out exactly what has been taught and what has not. Send the school, the year group and the most recent marked Physics work, and we will propose a specialist and a free trial lesson with no card details taken. That session produces a theme-by-theme audit across all five themes and their Higher Level extensions, which you keep whether or not you continue. From there it is a named component, an estimate of sessions, timed practice from week two and a review at six weeks. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
