IB Exam Preparation in the UAE

IB exam preparation in the UAE is sold at almost every price point, from around AED 45 an hour to AED 650, and the figure on the invoice tells you very little about what the hour actually contains. This page prices the work instead: what the market across the Emirates charges, what genuinely moves a quote up or down, and how a Diploma family should spread its spend between today and the May session. Lessons are one-to-one and delivered live online, booked in Gulf Standard Time.

  • One-to-one teaching over live video, booked in Gulf Standard Time slots
  • Paper weightings and assessment criteria listed by letter and by mark

IB & IGCSE in the UAE

Pricing the final stretch of the Diploma, honestly

Most UAE parents come to IB exam preparation with one question and get an answer to a different one. The question is what the last two terms will cost and whether the money will change a grade. The answer offered is usually a rate card with no work attached to it. Published rates across the Emirates in October 2026 run from roughly AED 45 an hour at the university-student end to AED 650 for a premium named specialist, and nothing in that spread tells a parent which hour will shift a Paper 2 mark upward.

The honest way to price Diploma preparation is to start from where the marks sit. A Diploma candidate carries six subject grades on a one-to-seven scale, giving a maximum of 42, plus up to three further points from the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay combination, for a ceiling of 45. In most subjects the internal assessment is already worth a fifth of the final grade and is submitted months before the papers. That means a family paying for preparation in February is buying a change to roughly 80 per cent of the grade, not all of it, and a provider who does not say so is selling you a number rather than a plan.

The UAE adds its own arithmetic. Dubai's regulator confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, so a household budget that absorbed a fee increase every year suddenly has room in it, and a lot of that room is going into tuition. At the same time every Dubai private school, whatever curriculum it is licensed for, must teach Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies, which takes real hours out of the week a DP2 student would otherwise spend on three Higher Levels. Ramadan then moves the useful part of the evening. None of that appears on a rate card, and all of it changes how many hours a family actually needs.

IB Gram delivers this work as one-to-one online tuition, over live video, to families anywhere in the Emirates. That is a deliberate choice rather than a limitation. A Sharjah family paying for a visiting tutor pays for travel and is limited to whoever teaches within a reasonable drive; the same family online is choosing from specialists who teach Analysis and Approaches HL Paper 3 or the Chemistry scientific investigation all day, and can take a 7pm Gulf Standard Time slot without anyone sitting in traffic on the Emirates Road first. The saving is real, but the subject match matters more than the saving.

What follows is the cost case in full: the market rate bands with their sources, the six things that legitimately move a quote, a twenty-week ladder counted back from the first paper with hours and indicative spend attached, the paper weightings for eleven subjects, the internal-assessment criteria by letter with their marks, the academic-honesty line that no budget can move, and what happens on results day if a grade lands one mark under a boundary. Figures are market figures, dated and attributed. Nothing here is a quoted IB Gram price list, because the right number depends on the subject, the level and how many weeks are left.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Only one IB programme ends in externally marked papers sat in a hall, which is why exam-preparation spending behaves so differently across the four. The notes below set out where the assessment pressure actually falls in each programme, and what that means for a UAE family deciding when to start paying for support rather than waiting.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

The Diploma is the only one of the four programmes where a family is buying preparation for timed written papers. Six subjects are graded one to seven, three usually at Higher Level, and the core adds the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. Externally marked papers carry roughly three-quarters to four-fifths of each subject grade; the rest is internal work submitted long before the session opens.

In the Emirates the DP2 year collides with mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons that Dubai schools must timetable regardless of the licensed curriculum, with mock weeks in January, and with Ramadan. Families here typically start paying for structured preparation in the autumn of DP2 and raise the hours after the January mocks, when a diagnosable gap finally exists to spend money on.

CPAges 16-19 · two years

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs at least two Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project, a language development portfolio and personal and professional skills. Only the Diploma courses inside it produce externally marked papers, so preparation spending concentrates on those two or three subjects and on the reflective project, which is internally assessed and moderated.

The Career-related Programme is offered by a small number of UAE schools, so a family here often cannot find a local tutor who has taught the personal and professional skills course at all. Live online teaching is usually the only practical route, and the sensible spend is on the Diploma courses sitting inside the programme rather than on the career-related study, which the school's own partner provider assesses.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to 5

Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme is marked against four criteria per subject, each scored one to eight, and converted to a one-to-seven grade by the school. Some UAE schools enter MYP 5 students for on-screen eAssessment and the ePortfolio; many do not. There is no national paper to prepare for, so money spent here buys criterion literacy rather than exam technique.

A UAE family paying for MYP support in the exam-preparation sense is usually solving a different problem: the jump from criterion marking into the Diploma's mark schemes. Spending in MYP 4 and MYP 5 on command terms, on structured written response and on the sciences practical cycle reduces how many hours the same household has to buy two years later in DP1.

PYPAges 3-12 · Early Years to Grade 5

Primary Years Programme

The Primary Years Programme has no external examination and ends in an exhibition in the final year. Assessment is continuous, teacher-led and reported against learning outcomes rather than grades, so there is nothing resembling a paper to prepare for and no mark scheme to practise against.

Parents in the Emirates sometimes ask about exam preparation at primary age because a sibling is in DP2 and the household is already paying for tuition. The honest answer is that primary spending should go on reading fluency, number sense and written expression in English and Arabic. Those are what make Diploma preparation cheaper later; early exam drill does not.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Preparation cost per subject tracks three things: how many papers there are, how much of the grade sits outside the exam hall, and how scarce a specialist is in that subject across Gulf time zones. The notes below name where marks are usually lost, because that is what a preparation hour has to be aimed at if it is going to repay its rate.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

At Higher Level the subject is split across three papers plus a 20 per cent exploration, and Paper 3 alone carries a fifth of the grade in two extended problem-solving questions. Marks go missing in proof by induction, in complex numbers and in the unstructured middle of a Paper 3 question where no part marks are signposted. The commonest preparation error is drilling Paper 1 technique and never sitting a timed Paper 3.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Applications and Interpretation is graphical-calculator heavy and context-led, so losses cluster in reading the question rather than in algebra: a correct regression with no interpretation, a hypothesis test with no conclusion in context, a financial model with the wrong compounding period. Higher Level adds matrices, graph theory and complex numbers in a Paper 3 that rewards sustained modelling over speed.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 combines multiple choice with a data-based section and carries 36 per cent; Paper 2 carries 44 per cent in structured and extended response. The scientific investigation accounts for the remaining fifth. Marks disappear in uncertainty propagation, in circuit reasoning under changing load, and in extended-response questions where the physics is right but the argument is not written in steps a marker can award.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The same 36 and 44 per cent paper split applies, with the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. Organic mechanisms, equilibrium calculations and energetics are where UAE cohorts most often lose marks, and the single cheapest gain is usually writing out mechanism arrows properly rather than describing them in prose. Higher Level adds depth in all three of those areas rather than new topic headings.

Biology

HL and SL

Biology rewards precision of vocabulary more than any other Group 4 subject: a correct idea expressed loosely scores nothing. Data-based questions in Paper 1 and the extended responses in Paper 2 are where marks go, usually because a student describes a trend without quantifying it or explains a mechanism without naming the structures. Preparation hours here are best spent marking the student's own writing against real mark schemes.

Economics

HL and SL

At Standard Level the portfolio of three commentaries carries 30 per cent of the grade and the two papers the rest; at Higher Level the portfolio drops to 20 per cent and a quantitative Paper 3 carries 30. Losses are predictable: diagrams drawn without full labelling, evaluation that lists both sides and never judges, and Paper 3 calculations abandoned before the final unit.

Business Management

HL and SL

The internal assessment is worth 30 per cent at Standard Level and 25 at Higher Level, which means a third of the grade is settled before any paper is sat. In the examinations, marks go on tool application, not recall: a SWOT with no conclusion, a break-even calculated correctly and never interpreted, an evaluation that does not answer the question asked in the stem.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is unseen guided analysis at 35 per cent, Paper 2 comparative at 25 to 35 per cent depending on level, with the Individual Oral and, at Higher Level, the HL Essay making up the rest. The commonest loss is a student who identifies devices accurately and never connects them to effect or to the guiding question. Preparation is largely timed unseen practice with line-by-line feedback.

History

HL and SL

Higher Level History sits three papers, with the regional-option Paper 3 carrying 35 per cent of the grade, plus a 20 per cent historical investigation. Paper 1 is source-based and has a rigid mark structure that rewards knowing the question types; Paper 3 rewards argument built on named detail. Students lose marks by narrating rather than arguing, and by running out of time on the fourth essay.

Psychology

HL and SL

Psychology is a studies-and-evaluation subject: command terms decide the mark band before content does. A student who writes everything known about a study for a question asking them to contrast two approaches scores in the bottom band. Higher Level adds a third paper on qualitative and quantitative research methods, which is where unprepared candidates lose most heavily.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL and SL

Arabic runs as a Diploma language and, separately, as a subject every Dubai private school must teach under the regulator's mandatory-subject rules. Diploma Arabic B assessment splits between productive and receptive skills and an oral; Arabic A follows the language and literature structure. Marks are lost in register and in text-type conventions far more often than in vocabulary range.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Computer Science carries a solution as internal assessment alongside two or three papers depending on level, with Higher Level adding a case study released ahead of the session. Students lose marks writing pseudocode that does not compile in their head, and by preparing the case study as reading rather than as a set of answerable questions. The solution is the part most often left too late.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways of buying Diploma exam preparation, each priced differently because each contains different work. All four are delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. The right one depends almost entirely on how many weeks are left and whether a diagnosable gap exists yet.

Year-round weekly preparation

One hour a week per subject from the start of DP2, aimed at keeping pace with the school's teaching rather than repairing it later. This is the cheapest route per mark gained because it spreads the work across thirty weeks and keeps the internal assessment moving on time, before it becomes an emergency. Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor sit around AED 150 to 300 an hour.

  • Tracks the school's scheme of work rather than a generic syllabus order
  • Keeps the exploration or portfolio on the school's internal deadlines
  • Absorbs Ramadan and travel by shifting slots instead of cancelling
  • Cheapest total cost per subject across a full Diploma year

Post-mock repair block

A fixed block of eight to twelve hours booked after the January mocks, aimed at the two or three topics the mock paper actually exposed. This is the highest-yield purchase in the whole Diploma, because for the first time there is real evidence of where marks are going rather than a parent's impression of it.

  • Starts from the marked mock script, not from a syllabus checklist
  • Written diagnosis of topic, command term and timing losses before hour one
  • Re-sits the same paper under timed conditions at the end of the block
  • Usually two subjects at most, so the hours are concentrated

Single-paper intensive

Short, narrow and aimed at one component: Analysis and Approaches Paper 3, History Paper 1 sources, the Physics data-based section, the Psychology research-methods paper. Families buy this when the rest of the subject is sound and one paper is dragging the grade down, and it is the cheapest useful intervention available.

  • Four to six hours on one component and its mark scheme
  • Timed practice every session, marked against published criteria
  • Suitable for a student who is already at a five or six
  • Can be booked for a November session candidate as easily as May

Core support: Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

Process coaching on the two core components that carry up to three bonus points between them and can also fail a Diploma outright. The work is question framing, structure, source evaluation and reading drafts the student has produced, with feedback returned against the published criteria. The student does all the thinking and all the writing.

  • Research question narrowing before any drafting begins
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Theory of Knowledge exhibition object choice and commentary structure
  • A clear record of what was advised, for the school's academic-honesty log

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in the UAE

The tutors listed below teach Diploma subjects to UAE families over live video. Each is matched to a named subject and level, such as Analysis and Approaches HL, Chemistry SL or History HL, rather than to a broad subject area. Paper structure changes sharply between levels, and a generalist loses marks in exactly that detail.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in the UAE

01

What UAE families actually pay for IB exam preparation

  • Three of six researched competitor pages publish no price at all; two quote US dollars
  • Ask whether a quoted rate is per 60 minutes or per 45-minute school period
  • Ask whether VAT is inside or outside the figure before comparing two quotes
  • A monthly package divided by its session count is the only honest comparison

Market rates for Diploma preparation in the Emirates in October 2026 fall into five recognisable bands. At the bottom, university students and generalist platforms advertise from roughly AED 45 to 65 an hour, with one regional platform publishing entry rates as low as AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor teaching online sits around AED 150 to 300; one UAE agency publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. A visiting tutor who travels to the home costs AED 180 to 500 once travel is priced in, according to the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table. A named Diploma specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and upward, and at least one Dubai provider publishes AED 650 an hour for a premium named teacher.

Monthly packaging muddies the comparison, which is usually the point. Published packages in this market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour visits at home. Divide those out and the online package is roughly AED 100 an hour while the in-home package is closer to AED 200 to 225, before anyone asks what happens to unused sessions. Bestimate's own monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

The table below is the market, not an IB Gram price list. IB Gram quotes per subject and level after a free trial lesson, because a Standard Level Business Management student eleven weeks out and a Higher Level Chemistry student in October are not the same piece of work and should not carry the same number. What the table is useful for is sanity-checking a quote: if a provider wants premium-band money, the hour should contain premium-band work, and the next two sections set out what that means in practice.

Six things that legitimately move a preparation quote, and four that should not

A rate is a price for scarcity plus preparation time, and both are measurable. Scarcity is about how many people in a workable time zone can teach that exact component: Analysis and Approaches Paper 3 and Higher Level Chemistry are genuinely scarce, Standard Level Business Management is not, and the rate difference between them is honest. Preparation time is about what happens outside the hour. A tutor who reads a marked mock script, writes a diagnosis and builds a timed paper from past questions has spent an hour on your child before the session starts, and charges for it.

The four things that should not move a quote are the ones that most often do. Geography is one: a provider quoting more for Ras Al Khaimah than for Jumeirah on an online booking is charging for a drive that is not happening. Urgency is another, and families eight weeks out are routinely quoted a premium simply for being anxious. A badge is the third, especially the vague kind, and a parent is entitled to ask what a claimed credential means and who issued it. The fourth is the number of subjects: three Higher Levels is three bookings, not a package that justifies a higher unit rate.

The column on the right of the table matters more than the rate column. Each of these drivers is checkable before money changes hands, and a provider who will not answer a checkable question is telling you something useful. Ask for the component name, not the subject name. Ask what the tutor taught last session in that component. Ask whether the private tuition work permit applies to this tutor and, where it does, ask to see it, because in the UAE that permit is a real document with a real issuing authority and it costs the tutor nothing to hold.

03

The preparation ladder, counted backwards from the first paper

  • Before week 20: internal assessment, not papers, is where money changes the grade
  • Weeks 20 to 12: build the topic map from the mock script, not from the textbook
  • Weeks 12 to 6: one full timed paper a week per subject, marked and returned
  • Final 3 weeks: no new content, only timing, command terms and error patterns

Nobody in this market publishes a backwards calendar with hours and money attached, which is strange, because it is the only form in which the question makes sense. A family does not need to know what a year of tuition costs; they need to know what the next twenty weeks cost and what each block buys. The ladder below is built in weeks before the first paper rather than in calendar dates, because the Diploma session window and results dates must be confirmed with the school's DP coordinator or on ibo.org, and no date in this project has been verified against the IB itself.

Two structural facts set the shape of the ladder. First, internal assessment in most subjects is submitted to the school months before the papers, so the window in which money can change that part of the grade closes early and quietly. Second, the January mock is the first point at which a real diagnosis exists. Spending heavily before the mock without evidence usually buys revision of what the student already knows; spending nothing until after the mock means the internal work has already gone in unimproved. The sensible pattern is light and continuous through the autumn, concentrated immediately after the mock, then narrow and timed in the final six weeks.

The spend column assumes the market mid-rate of roughly AED 250 an hour for one Higher Level subject, and it is per subject, not per child. A family funding three Higher Levels on this ladder is looking at roughly three times the figures shown, which is precisely why the prioritisation question in the final rows matters so much. If the budget only covers one subject, fund the one where a single grade change moves a university offer, and fund it in the twelve-week window where timed practice converts into marks fastest.

Where the Diploma grade is already decided before the exam hall

  • Internal assessment is typically a fifth of a subject grade and closes early
  • The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are worth up to three points together
  • A grade E in either core component is a failing condition for the Diploma
  • The January mock usually sets the predicted grade as well as the revision plan

A parent writing a cheque in March should know how much of the grade is still movable. In the Group 4 sciences the scientific investigation is 20 per cent of the final grade and was submitted to the school weeks earlier. In both mathematics courses the exploration is 20 per cent. In Standard Level Economics the portfolio of three commentaries is 30 per cent; in Standard Level Business Management the internal assessment is 30 per cent. History carries 20 per cent at Higher Level and 25 at Standard Level in the historical investigation. Those marks are banked, moderated and no longer purchasable.

The core is the part families most often forget to price. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are graded A to E and combine on a matrix worth up to three bonus points, which is the difference between 38 and 41 on a university offer. They can also remove a Diploma altogether: a grade E in either is a failing condition. A household spending nothing on the core and heavily on a third Higher Level is optimising the wrong number, and the core work is also the cheapest to support because it is coaching on the student's own thinking rather than content delivery.

Predicted grades belong in the same conversation. UAE schools issue predictions for university applications well before the session, and they are built mostly from mock performance and internal marks. That gives the January mock a second job: it sets the number on a UCAS or direct application, not only the diagnosis for revision. Families who treat the mock as a rehearsal rather than a consequential event often discover in February that the prediction has already been filed. A preparation plan that aims at the mock as well as the final papers is the same money spent twice over.

05

Paper weightings: putting the money where the marks are

Preparation money should follow weighting, and in several subjects it does not. A family paying for general Physics revision is usually funding Paper 1 content when Paper 2 carries 44 per cent of the grade and demands a completely different skill, the extended written argument. A History Higher Level student whose tutor works through Paper 2 themes is leaving the 35 per cent regional-option Paper 3 untouched. The table below is the weighting map for eleven subject and level combinations, and a parent can use it to ask one blunt question: which paper are these hours aimed at, and what is that paper worth?

Two patterns in the table are worth naming. First, at Higher Level in mathematics and in the sciences, the extra paper is not a bolt-on; Analysis and Approaches Paper 3 is 20 per cent of the grade and is sat as two long unstructured problems, which is the single component most Diploma students never practise under timed conditions. Second, in the humanities the internal assessment share is larger than families expect, which means the window for improving those subjects closes earlier than for a science.

Weightings and criteria are set in each subject's current IB guide, and schools work from the edition their cohort started under, so confirm the exact figures for your child's cohort with their subject teacher or DP coordinator before building a plan on them. The structures below are the ones UAE schools are teaching to in the 2026-27 year. They are stable enough to budget against, and specific enough that any provider unwilling to discuss them by component name is not selling exam preparation at all.

Internal assessment criteria by letter, with the marks attached

Not one of the competitor pages researched for this project names a single internal-assessment criterion, which is remarkable, because the criteria are where the marks physically are. A science investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. A mathematics exploration is marked out of 20 across five: presentation at four marks, mathematical communication at four, personal engagement at three, reflection at three, and use of mathematics at six. A student who does not know those numbers cannot prioritise, and a tutor who does not quote them is guessing.

The Extended Essay is marked out of 34 across five criteria, and the distribution is counter-intuitive: critical thinking alone carries 12 marks, focus and method carries six, knowledge and understanding six, engagement six, and presentation only four. Students routinely spend their last fortnight on formatting, which is the four-mark criterion, instead of on the analysis that carries twelve. Theory of Knowledge splits into an exhibition of three objects with a commentary and an essay on a prescribed title, with the essay carrying the larger share of the grade.

Length limits matter as much as criteria because exceeding them costs marks or stops the marker reading. The Extended Essay has a 4,000-word limit. The Theory of Knowledge essay is 1,600 words and the exhibition commentary 950. An Economics commentary is 800 words. These are hard ceilings set by the IB, not guidance, and the final column of the table is the part a UAE family should read twice: it sets out what a tutor may and may not touch on each component, which is the boundary that protects the student's candidature.

What an exam-preparation hour has to contain to be worth AED 250

  • Timed attempt first, teaching second, never the other way round
  • Marking done against the published criteria and read aloud, not silently
  • One finite task set each week, and checked at the start of the next session
  • A written note of what was taught and what feedback was given, kept by both sides

At market mid-rate a single Higher Level hour costs about as much as a family dinner, and over a twenty-week ladder it adds up to real money. The test of whether it is worth the figure is not how the student felt afterwards. It is whether something measurable changed: a mark on a timed question, a command term correctly answered, a step in a method that previously vanished. An hour that consists of a tutor explaining a topic while a student listens is the cheapest hour to deliver and the most expensive to buy, because almost none of it converts.

A worthwhile hour has four parts and a parent can audit them from the other room. It opens with the student attempting something under time, without help, so that evidence exists. It moves to marking that attempt against the published criteria, out loud, so the student learns what the marker rewards. It then teaches only what the attempt exposed, which is usually one or two things rather than a topic. It closes with a specific, finite task for the week, and the next session begins by checking it. If a session has no written output, there is nothing to audit.

There is one more thing worth paying for that rarely appears on an invoice: the record. A tutor who keeps a short written note of what was taught, what the student produced and what feedback was given is protecting the student twice over. It gives the family a basis for judging whether the hours are working, and it gives the school a clear account of the support received if an academic-honesty question is ever raised about an exploration or an essay. That record costs the tutor ten minutes and is worth more than any badge on a profile.

08

The line no preparation budget can move: academic honesty

  • A tutor teaches, questions and gives criterion feedback on the student's own work
  • Topic choice, data and text must come from the candidate, always
  • Expect to disclose external support to the school; a good tutor welcomes it
  • Any offer of finished assessed work is a reason to leave, not to negotiate

There is a part of the UAE market that sells finished assessed work, and at least one provider researched for this project advertises completed internal assessments at a published price. A family paying for that is not buying preparation; they are buying an academic-misconduct finding against their own child, and the consequence under IB rules falls on the candidate, not the vendor. The Diploma can be withheld. Nothing on this page is worth risking that, and no saving on hours makes it rational.

The permitted boundary is clear and it is generous enough to be genuinely useful. A tutor may teach the subject content, explain the assessment criteria, discuss whether a research question is viable, read work the student has produced and give feedback against the published criteria, and challenge reasoning that does not hold. A tutor may not select the topic for the student, supply data, contribute text, rewrite passages, or correct a draft to the point where the writing is no longer the candidate's own. The difference is not subtle in practice: feedback names a weakness, ghostwriting fixes it for them.

Supervision also stays with the school. Each candidate has a supervisor for the Extended Essay and subject teachers who confirm authenticity for internal assessment, and schools in the Emirates increasingly ask students to log external support. A family should expect a tutor to be comfortable with that log existing and with its contents, and should treat reluctance as the signal it is. Ask a provider directly what they will and will not do on an exploration before the first session. A provider who answers that question crisply is the one worth the rate.

09

Results day economics: the review, the remark and the retake

Exam-preparation budgets usually stop at the last paper, and that is a mistake, because the most consequential decisions of the whole cycle happen in the days after results arrive. A grade one mark under a boundary, a subject that came back two grades below the prediction, a conditional offer that has just failed on a single point: each has a different route and a different cost, and each has a short window. The sequence below is the process; the exact deadlines for a given session come from the school's DP coordinator, who files everything on the candidate's behalf.

The first move is always the same and it is free: ask the school for the component marks, not just the subject grades. A subject grade of five hides whether the loss was in Paper 2 or in the internal assessment, and the answer changes the decision entirely. If the loss is in an externally marked paper and the mark sits close to a boundary, a re-mark enquiry is worth considering. If the loss is spread evenly across every component, a re-mark almost never moves a grade and the money is better spent on a retake plan.

Retaking is the expensive option and it is also sometimes the right one. A candidate may re-enter subjects in a later session, and a November entry sits roughly six months after May, which gives a focused single-subject plan about twenty usable weeks. Budget for entry fees charged through the school or an exam centre, plus a narrow block of teaching aimed only at the failing component. The alternative, which families rarely price, is accepting the grade and spending the same money on the first year of university support. Both are defensible; only one of them is usually discussed.

The regulator, the permit and the mandatory subjects you already pay for

Five bodies regulate private education in the UAE and the one you deal with depends on the emirate, which matters more to an exam-preparation plan than it sounds. KHDA oversees the quality of private education in Dubai. ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and its professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. The Sharjah Private Education Authority and the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge both approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. The federal Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

The tutor side is federal and it is simple. Private tuition in the UAE runs on a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through MoHRE, granted free of charge for two years, and open to school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee, applied for through its app, website and e-services. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts is published, so no figure should be quoted to you as fact.

Then there are the lessons a Dubai family is already paying for inside school fees. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in every Dubai private school regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab students and combined classes prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and schools are advised to keep any mandatory lesson to at least 25 minutes. That is several hours a week of a DP2 timetable, which is exactly why exam-term planning in the Emirates cannot be copied from a UK revision template and why the evening hours a family buys have to be placed carefully.

Equivalency, universities and what tutoring cannot do for either

  • Equivalency is a federal process, carried out by the Ministry, not by any tutor
  • British track: five IGCSE or GCSE subjects at E or 3, Arabic and Islamic excluded
  • American track: SAT Math 450 plus IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 reading-writing
  • No IB points figure is published on this page; verify it on moe.gov.ae

A Diploma is only useful if the destination accepts it, and in the Emirates that means two separate processes. The first is university admission, which is between the student and the institution. The second is Ministry of Education equivalency, the federal recognition of a secondary certificate issued outside the UAE system, which matters for public-sector employment, for some local universities and for government scholarships. Neither is something a tutoring provider performs, guarantees or accelerates, and any provider implying otherwise is selling urgency rather than help.

For the British track, the published requirements are specific: five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among those five, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics requires at least 450 in SAT Math. One ranking UAE provider publishes a six-subject requirement for IGCSE candidates; the sourced figure is five.

For the Diploma itself, no points threshold is published here, because none has been read on a Ministry of Education page and an unsourced number on a page like this is worse than silence. Confirm the current IB requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate before planning around it. Where this connects back to preparation spending is simple: a family choosing which subject to fund should know whether the destination cares about the subject grade, the total points, or a specific prerequisite, because those three answers point at three different hours to buy.

12

When no UAE-based specialist is free at your hour

  • Coverage is deep in maths, sciences, economics and English; thin in the arts and small languages
  • Scarcity is a slot problem as much as a subject problem in the final ten weeks
  • Expect to be told no rather than put with a non-specialist
  • Ramadan compresses the evening window; book the priority subject first

Every provider in this market implies infinite coverage and none of them has it. The honest position is that Diploma subject coverage in the Emirates is deep in mathematics, the three sciences, economics, business management and English, and thin in Global Politics, Film, Sports Exercise and Health Science, Theatre, Music and the less common language B options. It is thinnest of all at Higher Level in those subjects, at a specific weekday slot, in the ten weeks before a session, which is exactly when a family needs it.

What happens next should be stated before money changes hands, not discovered afterwards. If no UAE-based specialist covers the subject at the requested hour, IB Gram will say so and offer the realistic alternatives: a different slot in Gulf Standard Time with a UAE-based teacher, the same slot with a specialist based elsewhere who teaches that component daily, or a narrower engagement aimed at one paper rather than the whole subject. If none of those fits, the right answer is that we cannot help with that booking, and saying it costs less than taking the money.

The practical consequence for a budget is worth planning for. A family with three Higher Levels and a 7pm weekday constraint is very unlikely to place all three in that slot, so the prioritisation question arrives whether or not anyone asks it. Decide in advance which subject gets the best hour of the week and which can take a Saturday morning. During Ramadan the same question reappears in a different shape, because the useful window moves to after Iftar and the number of workable evening slots in the country drops sharply for several weeks.

Where we tutor

Exam-preparation planning emirate by emirate

Rates and logistics are not uniform across the Emirates, and neither is the regulator a family has to deal with. Each note below gives the regulator, what it changes for exam-term planning, and the practical constraint that most often decides when a session can actually run. All teaching is delivered online, so none of this depends on how far a tutor lives from your address.

Dubai

Regulated by KHDA, with 227 private schools serving 387,441 students in 2024-25 and seventeen curricula in use. Diploma cohorts here are large enough that schools run proper January mocks, which gives a family a real diagnostic before committing to exam-term hours. Rates are the highest in the country.

Abu Dhabi

Regulated by ADEK, whose professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from taking paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. A family here cannot simply hire their child's subject teacher privately, which is the single biggest reason Abu Dhabi households turn to online specialists in DP2.

Al Ain

Also under ADEK. The school network is smaller, so a Diploma student taking a less common Higher Level is often the only one in the city doing it. Local tutor supply in those subjects is effectively nil, and a 6pm or 7pm online slot is usually the only way the subject gets taught at all.

Sharjah

Regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods rather than only inspecting. Many Sharjah families commute into Dubai for school, so a weekday session realistically starts after 6.30pm once the Al Ittihad Road run is done.

Ajman

Private schools here fall under the federal Ministry of Education. Diploma provision is limited, and families frequently drive to Sharjah or Dubai for an IB place. Preparation budgets in Ajman tend to be smaller and the question is almost always which single Higher Level to fund rather than whether to fund all three.

Ras Al Khaimah

Private education is regulated by the emirate's Department of Knowledge, which also approves fees and curricula. RAK appears in almost no UAE tutoring content at all, so families here are routinely quoted Dubai rates plus travel by providers who then cannot staff the booking. Online removes both problems.

Fujairah

Under the federal Ministry of Education, on the east coast and two hours from Dubai in traffic. Any visiting-tutor arrangement collapses on geography, and local Diploma specialists in sciences and mathematics are scarce. Exam-term planning here has to assume every session is a video session and schedule accordingly.

Umm Al Quwain

The smallest private-school market in the country, under the federal Ministry of Education. A DP2 student in Umm Al Quwain generally has no realistic local option for Higher Level sciences. Preparation money goes further here because there is no travel premium to pay, and the constraint is availability rather than price.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in the UAE

Dubai

Dubai holds the largest concentration of IB World Schools in the country, and its 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them offering the IB, creating 16,846 new places. Diploma cohorts here are big enough to run full mock sessions and proper internal deadlines, which is what makes exam-term diagnosis possible.

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Abu Dhabi's Diploma schools sit under ADEK, and its professional-ethics rules mean the teacher who wrote the mock paper cannot be paid to coach the student through it. Families here plan DP2 preparation around that rule, which is why the online specialist market is comparatively mature in the capital.

Sharjah and the northern emirates

Diploma provision thins sharply north of Dubai, and the regulator changes with the emirate: SPEA in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain. Online teaching is the practical answer to a thin local specialist pool.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

Start with the specific thing that is going wrong: Analysis and Approaches Paper 3, the Physics data-based section, the Economics portfolio, the Extended Essay research question. Add the level, the school, the emirate and the weeks remaining. A component-level request gets matched to a specialist; a request for help with maths gets matched to a generalist.

  2. 02

Send the evidence you already have

A marked mock script, a report with criterion marks, a returned past paper, a draft the student has written. This is the free part of the process and the most valuable. It lets a tutor arrive at the first session with a written diagnosis instead of spending a paid hour finding out what a mock already told you.

  3. 03

Take the free trial lesson first

One lesson, no charge, with the tutor proposed for the work. Watch for the structure described earlier: a timed attempt, marking against criteria, teaching aimed at what the attempt exposed, and a finite task set at the end. If the trial is a conversation rather than a piece of work, ask for a different tutor before agreeing anything.

  4. 04

Agree the block, the slot and the rate in writing

Agree how many hours, over how many weeks, in which Gulf Standard Time slot, at what per-60-minute rate, with VAT treatment stated and a clear position on rescheduling and expiry. Ask what happens to unused hours. Prepaid hours that quietly expire are the most common complaint in this market and the easiest to prevent.

  5. 05

Review at four weeks against the evidence

Four weeks in, compare a timed paper sat now against the one from week one. Look at marks per component, not at effort or enthusiasm. If the numbers have not moved and the tutor cannot explain why in terms of the mark scheme, change the plan or change the tutor. A review date agreed in advance is much easier to hold than one raised in frustration.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The money is priced against components, not against anxiety

Quotes here follow subject, level and the actual component being taught, after a free trial lesson has shown what the work is. Rates in this market routinely rise as a session approaches, which charges families for being worried. The weeks remaining should change the plan and the prioritisation; they should not change the hourly figure.

Every figure on this page carries its source and its date

The AED bands here come from published rate cards and the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table, surveyed in October 2026, and are presented as market ranges rather than as our price list. Three of the six competitor pages researched publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars to families who transact in dirhams.

Subject match beats proximity, and online is how you get it

Teaching is one-to-one over live video, which means a family in Fujairah or Umm Al Quwain chooses from specialists who teach their exact component daily rather than from whoever is within driving distance. No travel premium is paid, no session is lost to the Emirates Road, and a 7pm Gulf Standard Time slot is genuinely workable on a school night.

The academic-honesty boundary is written down and stated upfront

Tutors teach content, explain criteria, question reasoning and give feedback on work the student has produced. They do not choose topics, supply data, contribute text or correct a draft to completion. Part of this market sells finished assessed work; the risk of that falls on the candidate, and we will not take a booking that asks for it.

The plan is built from evidence, starting with the mock

Hours are aimed at what a marked script shows, not at a syllabus checklist. That is why the post-mock block is the highest-yield purchase in the Diploma year and why we ask for the mock paper before quoting hours. A diagnosis written before the first session means the first paid hour teaches rather than investigates.

Coverage limits are disclosed before you pay

Subject depth in the Emirates is real in mathematics, the sciences, economics and English, and thin in the arts and smaller languages, especially at Higher Level in a narrow evening slot. Where nobody suitable is free, we say so and offer the realistic alternatives rather than placing a non-specialist in the chair.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in the UAE: your questions answered

What does a full Diploma exam-preparation programme cost a UAE family across the final two terms?+

Per subject, at the market mid-rate of roughly AED 250 an hour for a Higher Level specialist, the twenty-week ladder on this page comes to around AED 7,000 to 8,500: light weekly work before the mocks, a concentrated block afterwards, then weekly timed papers to the session. For one subject that is a manageable figure; for three Higher Levels it triples, which is why prioritisation matters more than the rate. Standard Level subjects and online delivery sit lower. Published market rates range from roughly AED 45 an hour at the university-student end to AED 650 at the premium end, so the band is wide and the work inside it varies enormously.

We can fund twenty hours of exam preparation. Where do those hours earn the most marks?+

Put twelve of them in the four weeks after the January mock, on the two topics the mock script actually exposed, in the subject where one grade change affects a university offer. Put six in the twelve-to-six-week window as full timed papers, marked against published criteria. Keep two for the fortnight before the first paper, for timing and error patterns only, with no new content. What this plan deliberately avoids is spreading twenty hours thinly across three subjects from September, which feels productive and changes very little because there is no diagnosis to aim at yet.

Why would one UAE provider charge AED 180 an hour and another AED 650 for the same subject?+

Legitimately, two things: scarcity and preparation time. A teacher who has taught Analysis and Approaches Paper 3 for years in Gulf hours is genuinely scarce, and one who reads a marked script, writes a diagnosis and builds a timed paper has worked an unpaid hour before the session. Illegitimately, several things: a premium charged for urgency, a vague credential with no issuing body named, or a travel charge on a booking where nobody travels. Ask which component the tutor last taught, ask for the written diagnosis before hour one, and compare both quotes on a per-60-minute basis with VAT treatment stated.

Does the internal assessment mark already in the system limit what exam preparation can achieve?+

Yes, and it is the arithmetic most families are never shown. In the sciences and both mathematics courses the internal assessment is 20 per cent of the final grade. In Standard Level Economics the portfolio is 30 per cent, and in Standard Level Business Management the internal assessment is 30 per cent. Once submitted and moderated those marks are fixed. A family starting in March is therefore buying a change to the remaining 70 to 80 per cent, which is still enough to move a grade, but it means the cheapest preparation money in the whole Diploma is the money spent on internal work the year before.

Is paying someone to mark past papers worth it when the school marks the mocks?+

It is worth it for a different reason than parents expect. The school marks one or two mocks a year; a preparation plan needs a marked timed paper most weeks in the final twelve. The value is not the mark, it is the pattern: the same command term misread three weeks running, the last question unfinished every time, method marks lost in presentation rather than in understanding. A tutor who marks aloud against the published criteria is teaching the student what the examiner rewards, which is a different skill from knowing the content and is the faster of the two to fix.

Our son sits three Higher Levels. Does preparation cost three times as much?+

On hours, yes, because each subject needs its own timed practice and its own marking. On total spend, most families do not triple it; they rank the three. Fund the subject where one grade change affects an offer most, give it the best weekday slot, and treat the second subject as a shorter single-paper intensive. The third often needs nothing beyond school teaching plus the student's own timed practice. Three full ladders at the market mid-rate would run past AED 20,000 across two terms, and very few households should spend that way when the marginal subject is already at a six.

How many marks does a Theory of Knowledge grade E actually cost on results day?+

More than the points suggest. The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combine on a matrix worth up to three bonus points, so the visible cost of weak core work is the difference between, say, 38 and 41 points, which routinely decides a conditional offer. The hidden cost is larger: a grade E in either component is a failing condition for the Diploma itself, so a candidate with strong subject grades can still end up without the award. Core coaching is also among the cheapest support to buy, because it is questioning and feedback on the student's own thinking rather than content delivery.

Can a tutor look at our daughter's exploration before she submits it?+

A tutor may read what she has produced and give feedback against the published criteria, explain what presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics are each worth, and question reasoning that does not hold. A tutor may not select her topic, supply data, contribute sentences, or correct the piece to the point where the writing is no longer hers. The distinction in practice is that feedback names a weakness and leaves the fixing to her. Expect the school to ask what external support was received, and expect a good tutor to keep a short written record so that question has a clear answer.

Does an exam-preparation plan for the November session cost more than for May?+

The hourly figure should be identical; the shape of the plan is not. A November candidate is usually retaking one or two subjects rather than preparing six, so the total is far smaller and the work is narrower: one component, timed, repeatedly. The practical difficulty is availability, because fewer tutors run a November cycle and the weeks involved cut across the UAE summer break when families travel. Book the slot early and accept a Saturday if that is what secures a specialist. Confirm the actual session window and entry deadlines with your school's DP coordinator rather than from any third-party page, including this one.

What should we see in the first four weeks that tells us the money is working?+

Three things, all of them written down. A diagnosis produced before or during the first session that names specific topics, command terms and timing losses. A piece of the student's own timed work marked against published criteria each week, with the marks visible to you. And a comparison at week four between a paper sat now and the one sat in week one, component by component. If none of that exists, there is nothing to judge. Effort and enthusiasm are not evidence; marks on comparable timed work are, and a tutor confident in the plan will offer the comparison without being asked.

Our school's mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education lessons eat the revision window. What do we do?+

Plan around them rather than against them, because they are not optional. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in every Dubai private school whatever curriculum it is licensed for, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab students, and instructional time calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. That is real timetable space. The practical answer is to treat the mandatory subjects as fixed, protect one strong weekday evening slot for the priority Higher Level, and move the second subject to the weekend. Where Arabic itself is the weak grade, it needs its own hour rather than squeezing into Diploma revision.

Do exam-preparation rates differ between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates?+

In the visiting-tutor market, substantially: Dubai carries the highest rates in the country, Abu Dhabi sits close behind, and the northern emirates show lower advertised figures with far thinner supply, so a quoted rate there often cannot actually be staffed. Online the rate should be the same across all seven emirates, because no travel is involved and the tutor's location is not the service. A provider quoting a Fujairah or Ras Al Khaimah family more than a Jumeirah family for an identical video lesson is charging for a drive that is not happening, and that is worth questioning before booking.

Dubai has frozen school fees for 2026-27. Should exam-preparation rates have followed?+

The two are unconnected, and it is useful to know why. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for 2026-27, under an economic incentives package worth AED 1.5 billion, because school fees are regulated. Private tuition rates are not regulated at all; they move with tutor supply, subject scarcity and how close the session is. What the freeze does change is household budgeting: families who had planned for a fee increase now have room, and a good deal of that room is going into tuition, which is one reason demand before a session has firmed rather than softened.

If a grade comes back one mark under a boundary, what is the sequence and what does it cost?+

First, ask the school for component-level marks. That is free and it tells you whether the loss sat in one externally marked paper or was spread across everything, which decides the next step. If one paper is close to a boundary, ask the DP coordinator to consider a re-mark enquiry; the IB charges a per-component fee and the school files it, never the family. If the loss is even across components, a re-mark rarely moves anything and the budget belongs in a retake plan. Windows after results are short, so the component-mark request should go in within days.

Is it cheaper to pay for preparation now or to budget for a retake later?+

Preparation now is almost always cheaper, because a retake is the same teaching plus entry fees plus six months. A November re-entry in one subject means a narrow teaching block of perhaps ten to fifteen hours, entry fees charged through the school or an exam centre, and a university place that may have to be deferred. Against that, the twelve-week timed-paper block in the current cycle costs less and keeps the offer intact. The exception is a candidate who is genuinely too far behind in a subject to recover before the session; there, a planned retake is more honest than expensive panic.

No tutor is free for Global Politics HL at our Gulf Standard Time slot. What happens then?+

You get told, before any money moves. Diploma coverage in the Emirates is deep in mathematics, the sciences, economics, business management and English, and thin in Global Politics, Film, Theatre, Music and the smaller language B options, particularly at Higher Level in a specific weekday evening. The realistic alternatives are a different Gulf Standard Time slot with a UAE-based teacher, the same slot with a specialist based elsewhere who teaches that component regularly, or a narrower engagement aimed at one paper. If none of those works for your family, we say we cannot help rather than seating a non-specialist.

Start with the component and the evidence, then price the plan

IB exam preparation in the UAE is worth paying for when the hours are aimed at something a marked script has actually shown, and poor value when they are aimed at a subject in general. Send the component, the level, the emirate, the weeks remaining and the marked mock, take the free trial lesson with the proposed tutor, and agree the block, the slot and the per-60-minute rate in writing before anything is paid. Teaching is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. Every AED figure on this page is a market range, dated October 2026, and confirmation of any IB session date belongs with your school's DP coordinator.
