IB DP Chemistry SL Online Tutor in Dubai

Looking for an IB DP Chemistry SL online tutor in Dubai usually means one of two things: a Standard Level student whose marks sit a grade below where they should, or a Higher Level student thinking about stepping down. This page treats both as syllabus questions rather than motivation questions. It sets out what the Standard Level course assesses, which topic is tested by which paper, which command terms quietly cost marks, and what a single sixty-minute session can realistically repair against what needs a whole Dubai school term.

  • Standard Level specialists, not Higher Level tutors scaling down
  • Every syllabus area mapped to the paper that examines it
  • Command-term drill against published mark scheme wording

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Standard Level Chemistry is a different course, not a shorter one

The common assumption in Dubai staff rooms and living rooms alike is that Standard Level Chemistry is Higher Level with the hard bits removed. It is closer to say it is a course with a different balance. Standard Level runs to 150 taught hours against 240, both papers run ninety minutes rather than two hours and two and a half, and the examination asks a student to do fewer things but to do them precisely. The precision is the part that gets underestimated.

That changes what tutoring should look like. A Higher Level candidate usually needs extension content and the ability to join two topics inside one question. A Standard Level candidate much more often needs the core material tightened and the answer written exactly to the command term. Marks at Standard Level are rarely lost to a topic the student has never seen. They are lost to a topic the student half knows, written up in a way that earns two of the four available marks.

So the sessions on this page start from a topic list rather than from a timed paper. Which themes has the school taught, in which term, and in what order? Dubai schools sequence the Structure and Reactivity themes very differently from one another, and a student who met energetics in the first term of DP1 and has not touched it since has a different problem from one who met it last month. Fifteen minutes of that conversation saves a month of generic revision.

After that the work is specific. One session on enthalpy cycles. One on bonding and the link to physical properties. One on moles and limiting reagents, which is still the single most common cause of a lost Paper 2 mark at Standard Level eighteen months into the course. The second half of each session is the same question type written again, to the mark scheme, until the shape of a correct four-mark answer is familiar rather than improvised.

Delivery is online: live video, one student, a shared whiteboard for structures and working, in Gulf Standard Time slots fixed around your child's school week. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. For Standard Level Chemistry this matters less for logistics than for availability, because a Standard Level specialist is a narrower thing to find locally than a general science tutor.

The page also answers the question underneath many of these searches, which is whether Standard Level is the right level at all. There is a table below comparing the two properly, including what each does for a university application, because that decision is usually made in a hurry in week six of DP1 and is difficult to reverse later. The first lesson is free, lasts 45 minutes, covers one subject and asks for no card details.

At a glance

  • 150 taught hours, including a 40-hour practical scheme of work
  • Papers 1 and 2 both run ninety minutes at Standard Level
  • The investigation is identical in criteria and marks at both levels
  • Most lost Standard Level marks come from half-known core topics
  • Sessions are planned against your school's own teaching order
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Standard Level Chemistry appears in three different Dubai timetables: the full Diploma, the Career-related Programme, and the Middle Years Programme year that feeds both. The content is the same in the first two; the pressure around it is not, and the sequencing advice differs.

DPAges 16-19 · Two-year course

Diploma Programme

Full Diploma candidates take three subjects at Standard Level alongside three at Higher Level. Chemistry is frequently one of the Standard Level three, chosen either as a second science or to keep a science on the certificate without committing 240 hours. The assessment is two ninety-minute papers and one internally assessed investigation, with the investigation criteria identical to those used at Higher Level.

In Dubai the Standard Level Chemistry group is often the larger of the two in a school, and it is frequently taught in a bigger class than the Higher Level set. That is the practical reason families add one-to-one support: not because the school teaching is weak but because a class of twenty-four leaves little room for a student to be asked why their answer stopped where it did.

CPAges 16-19 · Career-related pathway

Career-related Programme

Career-related Programme students take at least two Diploma Programme courses alongside a career-related study, a reflective project and the personal and professional skills course. Chemistry at Standard Level is a sensible choice for students heading into health, laboratory or engineering-adjacent pathways, and it is examined exactly as it is for a full Diploma candidate: same papers, same duration, same investigation criteria.

A small but growing number of Dubai schools run the Career-related Programme, and its students are easy to under-serve because revision programmes are usually built for the full Diploma cohort. One-to-one sessions tend to matter more here, since a Career-related candidate may be the only Chemistry student in their timetable band and has no study group to revise with.

MYPAges 11-16 · Leading into DP1

Middle Years Programme

Middle Years Sciences is integrated and criterion-assessed, which means a student arriving in Standard Level Chemistry has probably never written to a chemistry mark scheme or carried units through a four-step calculation. The two skills that need building before the first internal examination are quantitative confidence with moles and concentration, and reading a question for its command term rather than its topic.

Dubai families often decide the Standard Level or Higher Level question during MYP5, on the basis of a criterion grade that does not predict either well. A short block of sessions in the final Middle Years term, aimed at quantitative work, gives a much better basis for that choice than a projection from criteria A and B.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Standard Level Chemistry is usually one of several subjects a Dubai family is weighing up at the same time. The grid lists the Diploma subjects most often paired with it, and what the pairing request normally turns out to be once the first session happens.

Chemistry

SL and HL

The Standard Level core: bonding and structure, periodicity, energetics, kinetics at introductory depth, equilibrium qualitatively, acids and bases, redox and the organic families. Requests cluster around moles and limiting reagents, enthalpy cycles, and writing a four-mark explanation that earns four marks rather than two.

Biology

SL and HL

The most common second science for a Standard Level Chemistry student. The overlap worth exploiting is the assessment model: identical investigation criteria and the same style of data-based question, so work on uncertainty, graphs and evaluation transfers directly between the two subjects.

Physics

SL and HL

Chosen alongside Chemistry by students keeping an engineering route open. At Standard Level the recurring difficulty is algebraic rearrangement under time pressure rather than physics, which is why a maths-shaped session often helps the physics grade more than a physics-shaped one.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

The usual maths route for a Standard Level science student in Dubai. The statistics content supports the investigation directly, and the modelling work helps with graph interpretation in Paper 1B, where Chemistry candidates lose marks on gradients and intercepts.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

Taken by Standard Level Chemistry students whose degree target asks for it. Many universities expect this route for engineering and some sciences, so the subject choice conversation and the Chemistry level conversation usually need to happen on the same afternoon.

Business Management

SL and HL

A frequent third Standard Level in Dubai timetables. Its internal assessment lands in the same term as the Chemistry investigation, so families often want both coursework calendars laid out together before deciding how to spread tutoring hours.

Psychology

SL and HL

Popular with Standard Level Chemistry students heading for health-related degrees. The research methods and statistics content overlaps usefully with the data analysis criterion in the Chemistry investigation, which makes a single tutor across both a practical option.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

Counts in Group 3 or Group 4, which makes it a timetable solution for students who want to keep Chemistry at Standard Level. The command terms are different in character, rewarding evaluation of competing perspectives rather than calculation, and students often need that difference pointed out.

English B

SL and HL

Requested alongside Chemistry by students who are strong scientifically and lose marks for written expression. Where a science grade is being held back by how answers are phrased rather than what is known, work on written precision pays twice.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Standard Level Chemistry support divides fairly cleanly into three patterns, and which one a family needs is usually obvious from the first topic list. The difference is duration and frequency, not teaching style; all three run as one-to-one live video sessions.

Single-topic repair block

Two to four sessions on one named theme, booked when the problem is specific: enthalpy cycles, moles and limiting reagents, or the shapes-and-polarity chain in bonding. Each session teaches the topic, then works examination questions on it until the method is reproducible without prompting. Families use this between reports rather than continuously.

  • One theme named at booking, from the school's own topic list
  • Teaching first, then questions of the same type repeatedly
  • Ends with a short self-test the student marks themselves
  • No open-ended commitment beyond the booked block

Term-time weekly consolidation

One 60-minute session a week running alongside school teaching, following whatever the class covered that week. The purpose is to stop half-known topics accumulating, which is the main cause of a stalled Standard Level grade. It works best started in DP1 rather than DP2, when the backlog is still one term deep.

  • Session content set by the week's school teaching
  • A standing fifteen minutes on earlier topics to prevent drift
  • Short written note to the parent after each session
  • Slot held for the full term so the rhythm is not negotiated weekly

Mock-to-session revision run

A fixed run of sessions between the February mock examinations and the May session, built around the mock script. The mock is the best diagnostic a Standard Level student will ever get for free, and most of it goes unread. Sessions work through it question by question, then drill the two or three weakest areas it exposes.

  • Starts from the marked mock paper, not a generic syllabus list
  • Full papers sat under time at least twice in the run
  • Command-term drill on the question types that failed
  • A final list of topics to leave alone, which matters as much

Standard Level or Higher Level: the decision most Dubai students make too fast

The level decision is normally taken in the first six weeks of DP1, at an age when a student is choosing based on how the first few lessons felt. It then becomes difficult to reverse, because schools build timetables around set sizes and the two courses diverge in content as the year goes on. It deserves more than a feeling, and the table below is the comparison a family can actually use.

The honest summary is that Standard Level is the right choice far more often than ambition allows. A student who needs Chemistry as a supporting subject, who is carrying two other Higher Levels that matter more to their degree target, and who is not applying to medicine, is better served by a secure 6 at Standard Level than by a struggling 4 at Higher Level. The Diploma total does not distinguish between the two: a 6 is a 6.

Where Higher Level genuinely matters is prerequisites. Medicine and most chemistry, chemical engineering and pharmacy courses specify Chemistry at Higher Level, and no amount of tutoring changes an admissions requirement. Those requirements differ by country and by university and they are revised, so the only source worth trusting is the admissions page of the specific universities on your child's list.

There is also a timing point nobody mentions. A student who steps down from Higher to Standard Level in the second term of DP1 has usually been taught some extension content and skipped none of the core, which makes them unusually well prepared. A student who steps down in DP2 has often missed core consolidation while trying to keep up with extensions, and that gap needs rebuilding before paper practice is worth anything.

02

The Standard Level syllabus, mapped to the paper that tests it

Students revise by topic and are examined by paper, and the mismatch between those two things costs marks every session. Bonding is examined one way in a multiple-choice question and another way in an extended response. Kinetics shows up as a graph to read in the data-based section and as an explanation to construct in Paper 2. A revision plan that does not know which it is preparing for produces a student who recognises material without being able to deploy it.

The table below puts each major Standard Level area against where it actually appears and what the student has to be able to do there. It is built from marked Dubai scripts rather than from the syllabus document, which is why the third column is phrased as a task rather than as a learning outcome.

Two rows deserve particular attention. Moles, concentration and limiting reagents sit underneath almost everything else, and a student who is not fluent there will lose marks in energetics, in titrations and in the investigation without the cause ever being diagnosed as arithmetic. And the organic families row is the one where students most often substitute recognition for reasoning: they can name a functional group but cannot predict what it will do.

Used properly, the table is a filter. Before any session, the student says which row the problem is in and which column it sits in. That turns a vague request for help with chemistry into a sixty-minute plan, and it is the reason Standard Level sessions tend to produce visible change faster than Higher Level ones.

What one session fixes, what three fix, and what needs a term

Families are entitled to an honest answer about scale before they pay for anything. Some Standard Level problems genuinely resolve in one sixty-minute session, and it is worth saying so rather than selling a package. Others look small and are not: a student who cannot handle moles reliably is carrying a problem that touches most of the course, and no single session closes it.

The distinction is between a method and a foundation. A method is a procedure with a fixed shape, like building an enthalpy cycle or balancing a redox half-equation. Shown once, practised four times, it holds. A foundation is something used constantly and half-learned, like quantitative fluency or reading a question for its command term. Those take repetition across weeks because the habit has to replace an existing one.

The table below is the planning conversation written down. It is based on what Dubai Standard Level students have presented with and what actually changed, and it is deliberately specific about what one hour cannot do. A parent reading the fourth column should be able to decide whether to book a block or a term without further discussion.

One more honest line: if the answer in the fourth column is a term, the earlier it starts the cheaper it is. A foundation gap found in the first term of DP1 takes a handful of weeks. The same gap found after the February mock examinations in DP2 competes with revision for every other subject, and something has to give.

Command terms: the quiet reason Standard Level scripts stop at half marks

The single most common comment written on a marked Standard Level Chemistry script is that the student answered the topic rather than the question. Diploma papers use a defined set of command terms and each one carries an expectation about the form of the answer. State wants a fact. Describe wants the observable features. Explain wants a cause. Deduce wants a conclusion with reasoning attached. Justify wants the reasoning plus a reason for preferring it to the alternative.

At Standard Level this matters more than it does at Higher Level, for a mechanical reason: ninety-minute papers carry fewer questions, so each one is worth proportionally more. A four-mark explain question answered as a description takes a candidate from four marks to one or two, and there are not many questions left to recover that from.

The drill that fixes it is unglamorous and it works. Take a question, name the command term out loud, say in plain words what form the answer has to take, write it, then compare against the mark scheme and count where the marks sat. Six or seven repetitions across different topics and the reading habit changes. Students notice it themselves, which is rare in revision.

The table lists the command terms that cost Dubai Standard Level candidates the most, with what a weak answer typically does instead. It is worth printing and keeping beside past papers, because the pattern in the third column is remarkably consistent from script to script.

The investigation at Standard Level: same criteria, less time to do it in

  • Four criteria at six marks each, the same at Standard and Higher Level
  • The pre-collection planning session is the highest-value hour
  • Test the research question against the school's actual laboratory time
  • Feedback is criterion comments; the student writes every sentence
  • Checkpoints set to your school's internal deadline, not a generic one

The scientific investigation is worth 20% of the Standard Level grade and is marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each. Those criteria are the same at both levels, which surprises families who expect a lighter version. What is lighter is the surrounding course, and what is tighter is the practical time available inside 150 taught hours.

That produces a specific risk. Standard Level students often choose a research question that needs more data than their school laboratory time allows, discover it late, and end up writing a conclusion from three data points. Research design and data analysis both suffer, and since each criterion carries a quarter of the marks, a single planning error can cost six or eight of the twenty-four.

Useful support is therefore front-loaded. The highest-value session in the whole investigation is the one before data collection, where the question is tested against what the school can actually provide: equipment, supervised time, number of trials, range of the independent variable. An hour there is worth three spent rescuing a thin data set afterwards.

A tutor's role is teaching and feedback. Worked examples of uncertainty propagation, an explanation of what an evaluation has to weigh rather than list, and comments against each criterion so the student knows which marks are still unearned. No part of the report is authored by anyone but the student, and each checkpoint leaves a written record. Any provider offering a finished investigation for a fee is offering something that puts the candidate's Diploma at risk, and that is worth saying out loud in a market where it is sold openly.

06

What Standard Level Chemistry support costs in Dubai, and what changes the number

Published market rates in Dubai for a qualified subject tutor working online run roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with IB and A Level specialists at roughly AED 200-450 and above, according to agency rate pages and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table read in October 2026. Budget platform tutors, usually university students, advertise from around AED 33-150. In-home visiting rates including travel are quoted at AED 180-500. A premium named tutor is advertised at up to AED 650 an hour.

Standard Level normally sits at the lower end of the specialist band rather than the top, because the pool of tutors who can teach it competently is larger than the Higher Level pool. That is a genuine saving and it is worth asking about directly, since several providers quote one IB rate regardless of level. Monthly package prices seen in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits.

What changes a quote is less about the subject than about what the hour contains. Does it include marking a full paper between sessions? A written note to the parent? Investigation checkpoints, or are those billed separately? Two providers quoting AED 220 an hour can differ by a third in real cost once those are counted. IB Gram publishes no fixed rate card on this page: the first lesson is free and the rate is agreed in writing before the second.

For context on the household budget, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. Published monthly estimates for weekly one-hour tutoring in this market run from AED 240-600 at the budget end to AED 600-1,200 in the middle band.

07

Stepping down from Higher Level, or back up: what each move actually costs

  • A move down in DP1 usually leaves the student ahead, not behind
  • A move down in DP2 exposes core gaps, not extension gaps
  • A move up needs an itemised extension list with hours against each
  • The school's mock script is the best available diagnostic either way
  • Decide with the university admissions page open, not after it

Level changes happen more often in Dubai than schools advertise, and they are handled well or badly depending almost entirely on timing. The content difference is the ninety hours of extension material, so a student moving down is dropping content rather than acquiring it, and a student moving up is acquiring a defined list rather than relearning the subject. Neither is a catastrophe. Both need a plan written in a week rather than a term.

Moving down in the first or second term of DP1 is close to costless. The extension content a student has already met is harmless, the core is intact, and the student usually arrives in the Standard Level set ahead rather than behind. The useful tutoring here is not catch-up at all, it is consolidation: take the time freed up and spend it on the quantitative fluency that will decide the grade.

Moving down in DP2 is harder, because the student has often been keeping up with extension work at the expense of consolidating the core. The gap is not in the extensions they are dropping, it is in the foundations underneath. A diagnostic on moles, bonding and energetics in the first fortnight after the change is worth more than any amount of paper practice, and the school's own mock script is the best place to start.

Moving up to Higher Level, usually requested after a strong first set of internal examinations, needs an honest list: the extension areas in each theme, in the order the Higher Level set met them, with an hour estimate against each. Rate laws, the equilibrium law with Gibbs free energy, buffers, electrode potentials and organic mechanisms. That is a term of weekly work for most students, and it is better refused than attempted in six weeks.

08

Dubai schools, the regulator, and the paperwork behind a paid tutor

Private schools in Dubai are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Dubai had 387,441 private school students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, with International Baccalaureate students at 7% of enrolment. Seven further schools were approved for the 2026-27 intake, three of them running the International Baccalaureate.

Elsewhere in the country the regulator changes: ADEK in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, the Sharjah Private Education Authority in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the federal Ministry of Education in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. It is worth knowing which one applies if your family moves emirate mid-Diploma, because fee approval and curriculum oversight sit with the emirate body rather than federally in several cases.

On the tutoring side, individuals providing private lessons in the UAE need a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts has been published, so none appears here.

One rule parents should know: Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules prevent school staff from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. If a teacher at your child's school offers paid evening sessions, that is a question worth asking before accepting, and it is a reason this page never markets a child's own teacher as a private option.

09

Scheduling, Ramadan and what happens if a Standard Level slot cannot be filled

Sessions are booked in Gulf Standard Time against the school timetable. For Standard Level Chemistry the most requested pattern in Dubai is a single weekday slot between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, held for the term, with a weekend block added only during the investigation window or the run to the May session. Shorter and more frequent generally beats longer and occasional at this level, because the work is topic repair rather than full-paper endurance.

Ramadan shifts the day. School hours shorten, and many Dubai families move sessions to after Iftar, which usually improves concentration rather than harming it. Agreeing that in advance is what makes it work. Eid is normally a clean pause, and a planned block stretches by a week or two rather than being compressed. The long summer is the other opportunity: a student who finished DP1 with gaps can close two themes in July without any other subject competing.

Availability is disclosed before booking. A Standard Level Chemistry specialist in a specific early-evening window is a narrower request than it sounds, and some weeks it cannot be met. When it cannot, the options are a different time with the right specialist, a dated waiting period, or a tutor whose Standard Level experience is adjacent rather than exact, described honestly so you can judge it. No competitor page reviewed in this market states a coverage limit at all.

Finally, the free first lesson has conditions and they are stated here rather than buried: 45 minutes, one subject, one student, no card details collected. Its purpose is a diagnosis, not a sales call. You get a written note afterwards naming the topic list, the likely scale of repair, and what the fourth column of the scale table above says about your child's specific presenting problem.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Because lessons run over live video, the community you live in affects the clock rather than the tutor list. What follows is practical timing information for Dubai neighbourhoods where Standard Level Chemistry sessions are commonly booked, collected from how families in each one actually schedule.

Arabian Ranches and Arabian Ranches 2

Bus routes here are long and arrivals land close to 4pm. Standard Level families usually choose 5pm midweek, and many add a Saturday 10am slot during coursework season because the house is quieter then than any weekday evening.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Jumeirah Village Triangle

A high-density community with students spread across many schools, so there is no single arrival pattern. Sessions are typically set individually at 5.30pm or 6pm, and students here more often than most share a room, which makes headphones part of the kit.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

Apartment living with working parents on both sides. Evening slots after 7pm are the norm, and the reliable factor is that the student is already home, so these sessions are rarely rescheduled for traffic reasons.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Mixed school catchments and reasonably short journeys, which makes a 4.30pm start workable. Families here often book two shorter sessions a week rather than one long one, which suits the single-topic repair pattern Standard Level work tends to follow.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Students here are frequently at schools within the same district, so arrival is early and predictable. A 4pm Standard Level Chemistry slot is genuinely available, which matters for students who do better before dinner than after it.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

Sports commitments, not traffic, are the scheduling constraint in these communities. Training schedules move weekly, so Chemistry sessions here are usually anchored to one weekend morning plus a floating weekday slot agreed a week ahead.

The Springs and The Lakes

Short journeys to several long-established schools, and a settled Diploma population. Sessions commonly run at 4.45pm, and families in these communities more often ask for a fixed term-long booking rather than a rolling weekly arrangement.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Emirates Hills, The Meadows and Arabian Ranches

Long-established Diploma cohorts where Standard Level Chemistry is usually the bigger of the two sets. Students we support from this cluster most often arrive with energetics and kinetics half secured, because those themes are taught early here and then not revisited until the DP2 mock examinations.

Requests skew towards the organic families and towards writing precise definitions, which this group tends to find harder than calculation.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the school's topic list

The most useful opening document is not a report card, it is the order your child's school taught the themes in, term by term. Standard Level problems are usually located in something taught long ago and never revisited, and the teaching order is what finds it fastest.

    Name the presenting problem

Say in one sentence what goes wrong: sign errors in enthalpy cycles, blank on equilibrium shifts, strong in class and weak in examinations. That sentence maps onto a row of the scale table above, which decides whether you need a block of three sessions or a term.

  3. 03

    Free 45-minute first lesson

One subject, 45 minutes, no card details. The tutor works through two questions on the named topic and one from a different theme, to test whether the problem is local or general. You receive a written note with the topic list and the honest scale of repair.

  4. 04

Book a block or a term, not a subscription

Standard Level work is often finite. If the diagnosis is three sessions, that is what gets booked, and the block ends when the topic is secure. Term-long weekly slots are for foundation problems and for DP1 students trying to stop a backlog forming.

  5. 05

    Re-test rather than review

At the end of a block the same question type is sat cold, without warning or revision. A method that survives that is fixed; one that does not needs another pass. This is more informative than asking a student whether they feel more confident, which they almost always say.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Standard Level treated as its own course

Many providers quote one IB rate and send a Higher Level tutor to teach Standard Level with the extensions left out. That misreads where the marks go. Standard Level rewards precision on the core, and the sessions here are built around that rather than around a trimmed Higher Level plan.

Honest answers about scale

Some problems take one hour. Some take a term. The scale table on this page says which is which, and a tutor will tell you when a block of three is enough rather than selling a longer commitment that the diagnosis does not support.

Planned against your school's teaching order

Dubai schools sequence the Structure and Reactivity themes very differently from one another. A session plan built from your school's actual order finds the half-known topic quickly, where a plan built from the syllabus document starts at the beginning and wastes weeks.

Rates in AED with sources named

Three of the six best-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all. Every figure quoted here carries the rate card or survey it came from and the month it was read, so you can check it rather than take it on trust.

The level decision addressed, not assumed

A fair number of families searching for Standard Level support are really asking whether to change level. That question gets a direct answer, including the cases where the answer is to stay at Higher Level and the cases where no tutoring changes an admissions requirement.

Delivered online, and the reason stated

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. The online format is what makes a Standard Level Chemistry specialist reachable from Arabian Ranches and from Academic City on the same evening.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Is Chemistry at Standard Level enough for a science degree?+

It depends entirely on the degree. Medicine and most chemistry, chemical engineering and pharmacy programmes specify Chemistry at Higher Level, and no tutoring changes a published prerequisite. Many biology, environmental science, psychology, nutrition and business-adjacent programmes accept Standard Level, and some ask for no chemistry at all. Requirements differ by country and by institution and are revised between cycles, so the only source worth acting on is the admissions page of the universities on your child's list. Check that before changing level, not after the timetable has been set.

Which Standard Level Chemistry topics carry the most examination marks?+

Quantitative chemistry is the heaviest in practice, because moles, concentration and limiting reagents sit underneath energetics, titrations, redox calculations and the investigation. After that, bonding and structure recurs constantly, usually as a request to link a bond type to a physical property and justify the link. Energetics is the most common source of avoidable arithmetic loss through sign errors. The organic families produce the most marks lost to guessing, where a student names a functional group correctly and then predicts the wrong product. A good plan weights those four above everything else.

My daughter is moving from Chemistry Higher Level to Standard Level in DP1. What does she lose?+

Very little, if the move happens in the first or second term. She drops the extension content in each theme, which she has barely met yet, and keeps the whole core. In practice students who step down early arrive in the Standard Level set ahead of it rather than behind, because they have been taught at a faster pace. The useful thing to do with the freed-up hours is consolidation, particularly quantitative fluency. A move in DP2 is harder, since core gaps tend to have opened while she was chasing extensions.

What can one 60-minute Standard Level Chemistry session realistically fix?+

A method, not a foundation. Enthalpy cycle sign conventions, balancing a redox half-equation, the structure of a four-mark explain answer: each of those is a fixed procedure that can be taught, practised four times and left working. What one session cannot fix is anything used constantly and half-learned, such as fluency with moles or the habit of reading past a command term. Those are weeks of repetition because an existing habit has to be displaced. A diagnostic hour will tell you which of the two you are dealing with before you commit.

Why does my son score well in class tests and badly in Paper 1B?+

Class tests usually examine one topic shortly after teaching it. Paper 1B gives unfamiliar experimental data, often from a context he has never seen, and asks him to read a graph, handle an uncertainty and draw a conclusion. The chemistry knowledge is barely being tested; the data skills are. It is one of the more fixable gaps on the course, because the question types repeat. Three or four sessions working only on data-based questions, with uncertainty propagation shown explicitly, usually moves this section visibly.

What is the real difference between Standard Level Paper 1 and Paper 2?+

Paper 1 runs ninety minutes and carries 36% of the grade. It has two parts: a multiple-choice section rewarding quick, secure recognition, and a data-based section rewarding experimental reasoning. Paper 2 also runs ninety minutes and carries 44%, built from short answers and extended responses where the reasoning has to be written out and matched to the command term. Students who are strong on Paper 1 and weak on Paper 2 have a writing-to-the-question problem rather than a knowledge problem, and the two need completely different session plans.

How much does an online Standard Level Chemistry tutor cost in Dubai?+

Market rates for a qualified subject tutor working online in Dubai run roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with IB specialists at AED 200-450 and above, from published agency rate pages and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table as read in October 2026. Standard Level usually sits lower in that band than Higher Level because the tutor pool is larger, and that is worth asking about, since several providers quote a single IB rate for both levels. Also ask what the hour includes: marking between sessions is chargeable with some providers and included with others.

Which command terms cost Standard Level candidates the most marks?+

Explain, deduce and justify, in that order. Explain asks for a cause and the mechanism of that cause; weak answers describe what happens. Deduce asks for a conclusion with the evidence that forces it; weak answers state the conclusion alone. Justify asks for reasoning plus why the alternative is weaker; weak answers repeat the choice in new words. Because Standard Level papers are ninety minutes and carry fewer questions, each misread command term costs proportionally more than it would at Higher Level. The fix is a drill, and it works within a few sessions.

Does a Standard Level student still have to do the scientific investigation?+

Yes, and it is assessed identically. The investigation is worth 20% of the grade at both levels and is marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. What differs is the practical time available inside 150 taught hours rather than 240. That makes the planning session before data collection the single most valuable hour of support, because the usual Standard Level failure is a research question that needs more laboratory time than the school timetable can give it.

Are the grade boundaries for a 7 in Standard Level Chemistry the same every year?+

No. Boundaries are set after each session by the board, using the performance of that cohort on that specific paper, so they move between sessions and between levels. That is why a school's internal percentage target is an approximation rather than a rule, and why comparing your child's mark against a figure someone quoted from a previous year is unreliable. Published boundary tables belong to the board and are not reproduced or supplied here. The practical approach is to work on where marks are being lost rather than on a target percentage.

Our school teaches Standard Level Chemistry in a class of twenty-four. Is one-to-one worth adding?+

The case for it is not that the school teaching is weak. It is that in a class of twenty-four nobody asks your child why their answer stopped where it did. That single question, asked repeatedly against their own written work, is most of what one-to-one provides at this level. If your child's marks are dropping on extended-response questions while class tests look fine, the gap is almost certainly in that unasked question rather than in the material. A diagnostic hour will show which it is.

When in DP1 should a Standard Level Chemistry student start outside help?+

The cheapest point is as soon as a backlog is visible, which for most Dubai students is the first set of internal examinations in DP1. At that stage a gap is one term deep and a weekly session clears it alongside school teaching. Left until DP2, the same gap competes with revision for five other subjects and with the investigation deadline, and something has to be dropped. Students who start early also tend to need fewer total hours, because consolidation during teaching is faster than reconstruction afterwards.

Can my child take Standard Level Chemistry without having studied separate sciences before?+

Yes, and a significant number of Dubai students do, arriving from integrated Middle Years Sciences or from a combined-science IGCSE route. The two things they consistently need are quantitative confidence, particularly with moles and concentration, and practice writing to a chemistry mark scheme, which criterion-assessed coursework never requires. Both are teachable in a short block at the start of DP1. The students who struggle are not the ones without separate sciences; they are the ones who start the quantitative work in the second year.

Do UAE universities accept Chemistry at Standard Level for a science programme?+

Entry requirements are set by each university and vary by programme, so they have to be read on the institution's own admissions page. Separately, the Ministry of Education runs certificate equivalency, and that process is not something a tutoring provider performs or influences. No verified International Baccalaureate points threshold for equivalency has been read on the ministry's own pages, so none is published here. For the British route the published rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects.

Can one tutor cover Standard Level Chemistry and Standard Level Biology together?+

Often yes, and the pairing works better than most because the two subjects share an assessment model: the same four investigation criteria, the same style of data-based question, the same emphasis on uncertainty and graph work. Any session spent on data skills pays into both grades. Where it does not work is when one subject needs content teaching and the other needs examination technique, because those are different specialisms. Tell us which component each subject is failing on and the matching decision follows from that rather than from the subject names.

How are sessions scheduled around Dubai school hours and Ramadan?+

Everything is booked in Gulf Standard Time against your child's actual timetable. The most common Standard Level pattern is one weekday slot between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, held for the term. During Ramadan school hours shorten and many families move to a post-Iftar slot, which generally improves concentration; agreeing it in advance is what makes it work. Eid is usually a clean pause, and a planned block simply runs a week or two longer. July and August suit students closing a DP1 backlog, with no other subject competing for the hours.

Name the topic, then book the diagnosis

Standard Level Chemistry problems are usually narrower than they feel from the outside. Tell us the one thing that goes wrong, send the order your child's school taught the themes in, and take the free 45-minute first lesson. The tutor works two questions on the named topic and one from elsewhere, which is enough to say whether you are looking at a method to fix or a foundation to rebuild. You get that answer in writing, with the honest scale attached, and a block of three is a perfectly acceptable outcome.
