IB DP Chemistry HL Online Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Chemistry HL online tutor in Dubai works with your child over live video, one student at a time, in Gulf Standard Time slots that sit after the school run. Every session leaves something behind: a past-paper question marked against the published criteria, a note of which command term cost the mark, and a short written summary you can read the same evening. Higher Level Chemistry is 240 taught hours and three assessed components. This page sets out what each component rewards, where Dubai candidates lose marks, and what the evidence of progress looks like week by week.

What a Higher Level Chemistry tutorial produces, not just what it covers

Chemistry at Higher Level is three assessed components and one data booklet. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade and splits into Paper 1A, a multiple-choice section, and Paper 1B, a set of data-based questions tied to the practical scheme of work. Paper 2 carries 44% and is where extended response lives. The scientific investigation carries the remaining 20% and is marked out of 24. Those four numbers decide where tutoring hours are worth spending, and they are the first thing a session on this page establishes.

Most Dubai families arrive here after a report card rather than after a disaster. The grade is a 4 or a 5, the effort is not in question, and nobody in the house can say which part of the subject is costing the marks. A Higher Level Chemistry grade that has stopped moving is almost never stuck for one reason. It is usually a mix: a topic taught in DP1 and never revisited, a command term the student reads as a request for description when the examiner wants justification, and a habit of writing answers that are chemically correct but incomplete against the mark scheme.

Separating those three causes needs evidence rather than conversation. The early sessions are built around a marked script. Your child sits a past Paper 2 question under time, the tutor marks it against the published criteria, and the two of them rebuild the answer line by line, recording which marks were lost to knowledge, which to a misread command term, and which to presentation. After three of those, a pattern appears that no amount of general revision would have surfaced.

Everything after that is sequencing. Higher Level Chemistry adds roughly ninety taught hours over Standard Level, and those hours concentrate in the parts of the course that reward practice: rate laws and the rate-determining step, the equilibrium law and its link to Gibbs free energy, acid-base calculations and buffer systems, electrode potentials, and the organic mechanisms that have to be drawn rather than described. A tutor who knows which of those your child's school taught in which term can order the work instead of starting at Structure 1 and hoping.

Lessons are delivered online, over live video, with a shared whiteboard for mechanisms and a scan or document camera for handwritten working. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a Higher Level science that trade usually favours the family, because the pool of people who can teach organic mechanisms properly is not the same pool as the people who happen to live a twenty-minute drive from your door.

This page is written for DP1 and DP2 students in Dubai's KHDA-inspected private schools, and for the parent who wants to know what the money produces before spending it. Every AED figure quoted below is a market rate with its source named. The first lesson is free, lasts 45 minutes, covers one subject and asks for no card details.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 is 36% of the grade, Paper 2 is 44%, the scientific investigation is 20%
  • The investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each
  • A data booklet is issued for both papers, so recall of constants is not the problem
  • Higher Level adds about ninety taught hours of extension content over Standard Level
  • Every session ends with a marked artefact and a one-paragraph written summary
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry Higher Level sits inside the Diploma Programme, but the students who need it arrive from three different places: the full Diploma, the single-course certificate route, and the Middle Years Programme year below. Each needs a different starting point, and Dubai schools run all three on the same campuses.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

The full Diploma is six subjects, three of them at Higher Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. Chemistry at Higher Level runs to 240 taught hours across the Structure and Reactivity themes, assessed by two written papers and one internally assessed scientific investigation. A Higher Level science is normally chosen because a degree course asks for it, which means the grade matters more to the family than the subject's place in the timetable.

Dubai's private schools are inspected annually by KHDA on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, and International Baccalaureate students made up 7% of the emirate's 387,441 private-school enrolment in 2024-25. Three of the seven new schools approved for the 2026-27 intake run the International Baccalaureate, so the Higher Level science cohort in this city is growing rather than shrinking.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP1 to MYP5

Middle Years Programme

The Middle Years Programme runs integrated Sciences to MYP5 and assesses against four criteria rather than written papers. Students moving from MYP5 Sciences into Chemistry Higher Level meet three changes at once: separate-science content, quantitative work at a level the Middle Years Programme rarely demands, and a mark scheme that rewards justification over description. The gap is real, it is predictable, and it usually closes inside one term of structured work.

Several Dubai schools run the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma on one campus, which makes the move smoother on paper than it is in practice. The students who struggle most are the ones who scored well on Middle Years criteria A and B and have never written to a chemistry mark scheme. A September diagnostic in DP1 catches that before the first internal examination rather than after it.

DP CoursesAges 16-19 · Single-subject candidates

Diploma Programme Courses

Not every candidate sits the full Diploma. A student may take individual Diploma Programme courses and receive a course result for each, and Chemistry Higher Level is one of the more common single-course choices for students who need a science prerequisite without the whole six-subject load. The assessment is identical: the same two papers, the same scientific investigation, the same 24-mark criteria, the same May session.

Dubai has a steady number of students in this position, often after a mid-cycle move between curricula or a timetable that cannot carry a third Higher Level. Online delivery matters more for these candidates than for anyone else, because a single-course student is rarely taught in a class of their own and cannot rely on a school revision programme designed for full Diploma candidates.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry Higher Level is rarely the only subject in the house that needs attention. The grid below lists the Diploma subjects Dubai families most often request alongside it, with the component that usually prompts the request. One tutor covers two subjects only where the levels and the exam session line up.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3, with the Additional Higher Level extensions: rate laws, the equilibrium law and Gibbs free energy, pH curves and buffers, electrode potentials, and organic mechanisms. Marks leak in the extended-response parts of Paper 2 and in uncertainty handling in Paper 1B.

Biology

HL and SL

Themes A to D across four levels of organisation. The Higher Level extensions that cost the most marks are cell respiration and photosynthesis in detail, neural signalling, and the statistics: chi-squared, t-tests and standard error, which appear in Paper 1B data questions and in the investigation.

Physics

HL and SL

Often paired with Chemistry by students heading for engineering. The common request is Paper 2 technique rather than content: setting out a derivation, carrying units through a multi-step calculation, and reading a graph gradient as a physical quantity rather than a number.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The usual companion to a Higher Level science. Calculus and proof are where Higher Level candidates lose ground, and the mathematical exploration competes for the same autumn weeks as the chemistry investigation, which is why families often want the two planned together.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and the graphic display calculator. Chemistry students taking this route need help with regression and hypothesis testing, which also pays off in the data analysis criterion of the scientific investigation.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Taken alongside Chemistry by students who want a second quantitative subject. The internal assessment is a solution to a real client problem, and the planning weeks collide with the science investigation, so the calendar matters more than the content.

Design Technology

HL and SL

A Group 6 option with a heavy internally assessed component. Chemistry students who choose it often need help managing two long coursework pieces at once rather than help with the subject material itself.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Shares the Group 4 assessment model with Chemistry, including the data-based questions and the scientific investigation. Students taking both get a return on any work done on uncertainty, graph presentation and evaluation, because the criteria are the same.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Counts in either Group 3 or Group 4. Chemistry students use it to free a timetable slot, then find the command terms are different: the paper rewards systems reasoning and evaluation of competing viewpoints rather than calculation.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes cover almost every Higher Level Chemistry request from Dubai. The difference between them is not the content but what each one produces as evidence, and how often that evidence arrives. All three run as one-to-one live video sessions.

Weekly diagnostic-and-mark cycle

One 60-minute session a week, built around a timed question and its marking. The student works under exam conditions for part of the hour, the tutor marks against the published criteria in the session, and the remaining time is spent rebuilding the answer. The output is a running mark log by question type rather than a sense that things are improving.

  • One timed question or data set per session, marked live
  • A per-question mark log kept from week one
  • A written paragraph to the parent the same evening
  • Topic order driven by the log, not by the syllabus order

Pre-session Paper 2 intensive

A short block in the weeks before the May session, aimed squarely at the 44% component. Sessions run 90 minutes so a full extended-response question can be sat, marked and rewritten in one sitting. Families in DP2 often add this on top of a weekly slot rather than replacing it, from the February mocks onwards.

  • 90-minute sessions so a full question fits in one block
  • Command-term drill: explain, deduce, justify, comment
  • Rewrite of each answer against the mark scheme
  • Timing recorded per question to expose pacing problems

Scientific investigation checkpoints

Three or four separate sessions placed at the points where the 20% component actually turns: research question, data collection plan, data analysis, evaluation. Between checkpoints the student works alone. The tutor comments against the four criteria by letter and returns a sheet the student uses to revise their own report.

  • Criterion-by-criterion comments, never edits to the text
  • Uncertainty and error propagation checked before conclusions
  • Checkpoints timed to the school's own draft deadline
  • A written record of what was discussed, for the honesty file

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Where the Higher Level Chemistry marks actually sit

Higher Level Chemistry is assessed by two written papers and one piece of internally assessed practical work. Paper 1 is worth 36% of the grade and runs for two hours at Higher Level. It splits in two: Paper 1A is multiple choice, Paper 1B is a set of data-based questions drawn from the practical scheme of work. Paper 2 is worth 44%, runs for two hours thirty minutes at Higher Level, and mixes short answer with extended response. The scientific investigation is worth 20% and is marked out of 24. A data booklet is provided for both papers, so recall of constants and standard equations is not where the difficulty lives.

Those weightings should decide how hours are spent, and usually they do not. A family that books ten hours of Chemistry support often spends eight on content coverage and two on exam technique, when the mark distribution argues for close to the reverse in DP2. Paper 2 alone is nearly half the grade, and it is the component where a student who knows the chemistry can still lose a third of the available marks by answering a different question from the one that was set.

The table below sets each component against what it rewards and the failure mode seen most often in marked Dubai scripts. It is the first thing a tutor should walk a parent through, because it converts an abstract grade into a list of places where marks are available and recoverable.

Read it alongside your child's most recent school report. If the internal examination mark for Paper 1A was strong and Paper 2 was weak, the problem is almost certainly not knowledge. If Paper 1B was the weak section, the problem is uncertainty, graph work and the practical scheme of work, and that is fixable in a small number of focused hours rather than a term of general revision.

The Additional Higher Level content that separates a 5 from a 7

Higher Level Chemistry is not Standard Level with more questions. It is Standard Level plus a set of extensions that are examined differently, and almost all of them ask the student to connect two ideas rather than recall one. That is why a child who coped with Standard Level content in DP1 can stall in DP2 without the underlying knowledge having got worse.

The extensions cluster in predictable places. Rate laws ask for an order to be determined from data and then for a mechanism consistent with that order. The equilibrium law arrives with the reaction quotient and then connects to Gibbs free energy, so a single question can require a calculation and a written judgement about spontaneity. Proton transfer adds pH curves, indicator choice and buffer calculations. Electron transfer adds standard electrode potentials and the quantitative side of electrolysis. Organic chemistry adds mechanisms that have to be drawn with correct curly arrows and a visible intermediate.

Each of those is a few hours of work, not a term. The table puts a realistic range of one-to-one hours against each, based on what Dubai Diploma students typically need once the underlying Standard Level material is secure. The ranges assume the student does the practice between sessions; they are not a promise, and a student who arrives with gaps further back will need the earlier material first.

The last row is the one families underestimate. Structure 3.2 at Higher Level expects a structure to be deduced by combining mass spectrometry, infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance evidence. It is three skills used together inside one question, and it rewards a drill more than it rewards reading. Two or three sessions of nothing but spectra usually moves it.

What the first three sessions produce: a marked script and a mark log

  • Session one: a timed Paper 2 question, marked in the session
  • Session two: a Paper 1B data set, with uncertainty handling checked
  • Session three: a rewrite against the mark scheme, side by side
  • Loss categories recorded as knowledge, command term or presentation
  • A written parent note the same evening, in plain sentences

A parent paying for Higher Level Chemistry support should be able to see what the hours bought. On this page that means artefacts, and the first three sessions are designed to produce them rather than to cover ground. Session one is a timed Paper 2 question and its marking. Session two is a Paper 1B data set and its marking. Session three is the first rewrite, with the mark scheme visible beside the student's own answer.

The marking is the part that does the work. A tutor who simply tells a student the answer was wrong has given them nothing they could not get from the back of a revision guide. A tutor who writes the mark allocation beside each line, says which word in the question triggered which requirement, and records whether the loss was knowledge, command term or presentation, has produced a diagnosis. Three of those stacked next to each other is a profile, and a profile is what a twelve-week plan is built from.

The mark log is deliberately plain: question reference, component, marks available, marks awarded, loss category, and the one sentence the student writes themselves about what they would do differently. There is no score, no percentage and no rating. The value is in the pattern across entries. A student losing marks on command terms in eleven of fifteen entries has a technique problem that no further content teaching will touch.

You see all of it. Each session ends with a short written note: what was worked on, what the mark was, what changes next time. It arrives the same evening and it is written for a parent rather than for a file. If three notes in a row say the same thing, that is a signal the plan needs changing, and it is the tutor's job to raise it rather than yours to notice it.

Twelve weeks of Chemistry Higher Level, and the evidence at each checkpoint

Twelve weeks is the shortest block in which a Higher Level Chemistry profile reliably changes, and it is roughly one Dubai school term. The shape below is what a weekly 60-minute slot looks like when it is planned from evidence rather than from the syllabus order. It is a template, not a prescription: a student with a gap in Structure 1 bonding will spend weeks three and four there instead.

The point of naming an output for every fortnight is that it makes the plan falsifiable. If week six arrives and no criterion sheet exists for the investigation, something has slipped and it can be seen. Families who have paid for tutoring before will recognise the alternative, where twelve weeks pass pleasantly and the only evidence at the end is the next report card.

Weeks seven and eight carry the full Paper 1 under time, both sections in one sitting, because the pacing problem between Paper 1A and Paper 1B only shows up when they are sat together. Students who practise the two separately often do well at both and still lose six or seven marks in the real paper by spending too long on the data questions.

Weeks eleven and twelve repeat the week-one paper type so the comparison is like for like. The residual list at the end is the honest part: the topics that have not moved, with an estimate of the hours they would take. Some families stop there, some continue to the May session. Both are reasonable, and the list is what makes the decision an informed one.

Where Chemistry Higher Level marks leak in Dubai classrooms

  • Command terms read as invitations to describe rather than to justify
  • Uncertainty quoted in a table and then dropped in the conclusion
  • Bonding and structure left behind in DP1 and needed in DP2 organics
  • Two-topic questions never practised as two-topic questions
  • Mechanism diagrams drawn without the intermediate shown

Marked scripts from Dubai Diploma candidates lose marks in a small number of repeating places, and almost none of them are exotic. The biggest single category is the command term. A question that says deduce wants a conclusion with its reasoning attached; a question that says explain wants a mechanism of cause; a question that says comment wants a judgement. Students who write everything they know about the topic score the marks for description and miss the rest.

The second category is quantitative presentation. Significant figures carried inconsistently, units dropped halfway through a multi-step calculation, an uncertainty quoted in the table and then ignored in the conclusion. These are not chemistry errors and they are not hard to fix, but they are worth several marks per paper and they recur because nobody has ever sat with the student and pointed at them line by line.

The third is the DP1 topic that was never revisited. Bonding and structure is taught early, assumed afterwards, and then needed in organic mechanisms and in intermolecular forces questions eighteen months later. A student who is shaky on why a particular bond is polar will struggle with a mechanism question and will usually describe it as not understanding organic chemistry, which sends the tutoring hours to the wrong place.

The fourth is specific to Higher Level: questions that require two topics at once. Gibbs free energy with equilibrium, electrode potentials with feasibility, rate law with mechanism. Students taught topic by topic have rarely practised the join, and the join is where the final marks live. This is the single most productive thing to drill in the term before the May session.

06

The scientific investigation: 24 marks, four criteria, and the line a tutor holds

  • Four criteria, six marks each, twenty-four in total
  • Equal weighting means the evaluation deserves equal time
  • Feedback arrives as criterion comments, never as inserted text
  • A written record of each checkpoint, kept for the school's honesty file
  • Checkpoints set against your school's draft deadline, not a generic one

The scientific investigation is 20% of the Higher Level Chemistry grade and is marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The report has a word ceiling, and the time allocation inside the course is about ten hours. Those are the facts that should shape any paid support, because they tell you that the criteria are weighted equally and that a weak evaluation costs exactly as much as a weak research design.

What a tutor may do is teach and give feedback. That means explaining what a controlled variable has to look like in a rate experiment, showing worked examples of uncertainty propagation, asking why a particular graph was chosen, and commenting against a criterion so the student knows which of the six marks are not yet earned. The comments go back as a sheet. The student then revises their own report in their own words.

What no tutor may do is author any part of the report, supply text for it, or hand back a version with sentences inserted. IB academic-honesty rules make the authorship of coursework the student's own responsibility, and a breach is a malpractice matter for the candidate, not an administrative one. Pages in this market that offer finished investigations for a fee are selling something that puts the student's Diploma at risk. We say that plainly because the distinction is the whole value of paid support here.

In practice the honest version is also the more useful one. A student who has had the evaluation criterion explained once and then written their own evaluation can do it again for the next subject's internal assessment. A student handed a finished evaluation has learned nothing transferable and has a file note waiting for them if anyone looks.

07

What Higher Level Chemistry support costs in Dubai, and what the money buys

Three of the six best-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars. The table below gives the AED bands with the source of each named, as of October 2026. These are market rates, not an IB Gram price list: the first lesson here is free and the rate is confirmed in writing before the second one.

What moves a Dubai quote is not mysterious. Higher Level costs more than Standard Level because the tutor pool is smaller. The weeks before the May session cost more than October because demand rises. Marking a full paper outside the session is chargeable time with some providers and included with others, and that single difference can be worth more than the headline hourly rate. Ask what a quoted hour includes before comparing two numbers.

Context helps too. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. Against a fee bill that is flat, a weekly Higher Level Chemistry hour is a smaller decision than it looks in isolation, and published monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions in this market run from AED 240-600 at the budget end to AED 1,000-2,000 and above for specialist support in an examination year.

The honest answer to what a family should spend is that it depends on the residual list. A student with one weak Additional Higher Level area and sound technique needs six to eight hours. A student who needs bonding rebuilt, mechanisms drilled and an investigation rescued needs a term. The diagnostic in the free first lesson is what tells you which of those you are looking at, and it costs nothing to find out.

KHDA reports, predicted grades and reading your school's own evidence

Dubai private schools are overseen by KHDA, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Inspection outcomes are published on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. A band is a judgement about a school, not about your child's chemistry, and it is worth reading at the level of the subject commentary rather than the headline.

The document that matters more to a Higher Level Chemistry candidate is the predicted grade. Schools generate it from internal assessment data, and it drives university applications long before the May session. A prediction built on a weak Paper 2 performance in January will follow the student through the whole application cycle, which is why the term before mocks is the highest-leverage place to put tutoring hours.

Ask the school three things: which past papers the internal examinations were built from, how the Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks were weighted in the reported grade, and what the investigation mark currently stands at out of 24. Those three answers tell a tutor more than any general description of how your child is doing, and schools answer them readily when asked specifically.

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies run alongside the Diploma for the relevant students in Dubai private schools regardless of the curriculum the school is licensed to teach, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies. That matters for the timetable rather than for chemistry, but it is one more fixed block to plan a weekly Chemistry slot around.

09

Scheduling in Gulf Standard Time, Ramadan, and what happens when no specialist is free

Every session is booked in Gulf Standard Time and confirmed against your child's school timetable, not against a tutor's convenience. Most Dubai Diploma families start with one weekday slot between 4pm and 7pm and add a weekend block in DP2, when timed papers need ninety uninterrupted minutes. The slot is held for the term, because a Higher Level science improves with regularity more than with volume.

Ramadan changes the day rather than the plan. School hours shorten, energy patterns shift, and many families move sessions to after Iftar. That is available and it is normal; it needs to be agreed in advance so the tutor's week is built around it. The weeks of Eid are usually paused outright, and the twelve-week block simply becomes a fourteen-week one. Summer works the other way: students who have fallen behind often do their most useful chemistry in July, with no school competing for attention.

Coverage is the thing most providers in this market do not disclose. Higher Level Chemistry with investigation support in a specific evening slot is a narrow request, and there are weeks when no suitable specialist is free. When that happens you are told before you book, not after. The options are a different time with the right specialist, a waiting period with a date attached, or a tutor whose Higher Level experience is in a neighbouring area of the syllabus, stated plainly so you can judge it.

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work. Individuals providing private lessons need a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years. Anyone offering private tutoring without that permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts has been published, so none is quoted here. A parent can ask any tutor whether they hold the permit, and a straight answer is a reasonable expectation.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Online delivery means the community you live in changes the timetable rather than the tutor. What it changes is when a session can realistically start, once the school bus and the drive home are accounted for. The notes below are about timing, not about catchment areas.

Al Barsha and Barsha South

Several Diploma cohorts sit within a short radius here and buses unload between 3pm and 3.40pm. A 4.15pm Chemistry session works on most weekdays. Thursday is the exception, when after-school science and robotics clubs run late in this cluster.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Longer bus routes push arrival past 4pm for many Diploma students in these communities. Families here usually settle on a 5pm or 5.30pm weekday slot plus a longer Saturday morning block, which suits full timed papers better than a short weekday hour.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Short journeys and a dense Diploma population make early slots viable. The constraint is competing activities rather than traffic, so Chemistry sessions in these communities are often fixed to one weekday plus Sunday, before the school week restarts.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Apartment living and a tight evening window. The practical problem is finding a quiet room rather than a free hour, so a 7pm start after dinner suits more Marina Diploma students than a 4pm one, and headphones are part of the setup.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

School days finish later here and the drive home is the main variable. Diploma families in Mirdif tend to book two 60-minute sessions rather than one 90-minute block, which also fits Paper 1B data practice better than a single long sitting.

Dubai Hills Estate

A newer cluster with a young Diploma cohort, much of it in DP1. Sessions commonly start at 4.30pm, and the September diagnostic matters more here because the move out of the Middle Years Programme is recent for most of these students.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Spread-out villa communities with long individual drives rather than a shared bus pattern. Chemistry sessions here are usually set at a fixed weekday evening time and kept there for the whole term, because moving the slot once tends to move it repeatedly.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Barsha South and Al Sufouh

The densest concentration of Diploma Chemistry candidates in Dubai, with several schools running the International Baccalaureate from the primary years upwards. Students we support in this cluster most often ask for Paper 2 extended response and for help with the scientific investigation in the first term of DP2.

  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Umm Suqeim, Jumeirah and Al Safa

A mixed cluster where Diploma schools sit next to British-curriculum schools running A Level, so students often arrive having chosen Higher Level Chemistry over an A Level alternative. Requests here skew towards organic mechanisms and towards planning the investigation around a school laboratory that is shared across year groups.

  • Raffles World Academy
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Jumeirah College
  • Safa British School
  • Horizon English School

Schools are named as market context for Dubai families. IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them, and none of them endorses this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the last marked paper

Upload or photograph your child's most recent Chemistry script with the teacher's marks still on it, and name the school and the term each topic was taught. A marked script tells a tutor more in five minutes than a phone call does in thirty, and it means the first lesson starts from evidence.

  2. 02

    Free 45-minute first lesson

One subject, 45 minutes, no card details required. The student works a Paper 2 question under time while the tutor watches, then the two of them mark it together. You receive a short written note afterwards setting out what was lost and which of the three loss categories it fell into.

  3. 03

    Agree the twelve-week shape

Slot, frequency and topic order are fixed in writing before the second lesson, along with the rate and what it includes. Most Higher Level Chemistry families start at one 60-minute session a week and add a second in the term before the May session rather than at the start.

  4. 04

    Evidence after every session

Each lesson ends with a marked artefact and a paragraph you can read the same evening: what was worked on, what the mark was, what changes next week. There is no portal to log into and no progress percentage, because neither of those is evidence of anything.

  5. 05

    Review at week six

At the halfway point the mark log is compared with where it started. If the loss profile has not moved, the tutor or the plan changes. That conversation is scheduled in advance rather than left for you to request, and it is the point at which most families decide whether to continue.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by component, not by subject label

A request for a Chemistry tutor is too coarse to match on. Paper 1B uncertainty work, Paper 2 extended response and investigation data analysis are three different specialisms. The marked script you send decides which one your child is matched to.

Market rates quoted with their source

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the published rate card or survey it came from, with the month it was read. Most pages in this market publish no price at all, and two of the ranking ones quote in a currency UAE families do not transact in.

The honesty line is written down

A tutor teaches, reviews and comments against criteria. No part of an internally assessed report is authored by anyone but the student, and each checkpoint leaves a written record your school can see. That is a standard this market does not uniformly meet.

Gulf Standard Time, including Ramadan

Sessions are scheduled against your child's timetable in local time, with post-Iftar slots during Ramadan and a planned pause over Eid. The twelve-week block stretches to fit the UAE calendar rather than the calendar bending to the plan.

Coverage disclosed before you book

Higher Level Chemistry in a narrow evening slot is a specific request, and some weeks it cannot be filled. You are told that before payment, with the alternatives spelled out. No competitor page found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Online because of the tutor pool, not the logistics

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a Higher Level science the online format is what makes a mechanisms specialist reachable from any community in the emirate rather than only from the nearest few.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What evidence will we actually see after a month of Chemistry HL sessions?+

Four marked artefacts and a mark log. By the end of a month a weekly student has sat and had marked at least one timed Paper 2 question, one Paper 1B data set and one rewrite, with each mark recorded by question reference, marks available, marks awarded and loss category. You also hold four short written notes, one per session. The useful part is the pattern: if three of four entries show marks lost to command terms rather than content, the next block is technique work. That conclusion is visible to you in the log rather than something you have to take on trust.

How do you work out which Chemistry HL topic is costing my child the most marks?+

By marking real scripts and categorising each lost mark. A timed question is sat under conditions, marked against the published criteria in the session, and every missing mark is labelled as knowledge, command term or presentation. After three scripts the categories have enough entries to show a pattern. A student losing marks across unrelated topics usually has a technique problem; a student losing them in clusters has specific content gaps. The approach matters because the two need opposite plans, and guessing between them is how a term of tutoring gets spent in the wrong place.

Is Chemistry Higher Level genuinely harder than Standard Level, or just longer?+

Both, but the difficulty is the part that matters. Higher Level runs to 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard Level, and the extra content is concentrated in areas that ask a student to combine two ideas: a rate law with a mechanism, an equilibrium constant with Gibbs free energy, an electrode potential with a feasibility judgement. Standard Level questions more often test one idea at a time. A student who was comfortable at Standard Level content and stalls at Higher Level has usually met the join rather than a knowledge wall, and the join responds well to drilling.

My son gets the multiple choice right and loses marks on Paper 2. Why?+

Because the two components reward different things. Paper 1A rewards fast recognition of a correct statement. Paper 2 rewards chemistry written to a command term, with the reasoning visible, in a quantity the mark allocation implies. A student with strong recall can read a four-mark explain question, write three correct sentences of description, and score one. The fix is not more content revision. It is sitting extended-response questions, marking them against the scheme, and rewriting them until the structure of a four-mark answer is automatic.

Which Chemistry HL topics need the most one-to-one hours?+

In marked Dubai scripts the heaviest users of tutoring time are chemical equilibrium with its link to Gibbs free energy, proton transfer with pH curves and buffers, and the organic mechanisms. Each typically takes four to six one-to-one hours to move, assuming the Standard Level groundwork is secure and the student practises between sessions. Rate laws and electrode potentials sit a little lower at three to five hours. Spectroscopic identification is the cheapest win: two or three sessions of combining mass spectrometry, infrared and NMR evidence usually settles it.

How much does an online Chemistry Higher Level tutor cost per hour for a Dubai family?+

Market rates in Dubai for a qualified subject tutor online run roughly AED 150-300 an hour, and for an IB or A Level specialist roughly AED 200-450 and above, according to published agency rate pages and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. Budget platform rates start far lower, from around AED 33-150, and a premium named tutor is advertised at up to AED 650. Those are market figures rather than ours. Ask any provider what the hour includes, because marking a full paper outside the session is chargeable with some and included with others.

Can a tutor mark my daughter's past paper and show the examiner's reasoning?+

Yes, and that is the core of how these sessions run. A past paper is sat under time, then marked against the published criteria with the mark allocation written beside each line of the answer. The tutor says which word in the question triggered which requirement and where the answer stopped short. Published mark schemes and papers are referenced and linked rather than reproduced or supplied as downloads, since those documents belong to the board. What your daughter keeps is her own script, annotated, plus the log entry.

Does the data booklet mean my child does not need to memorise anything?+

It removes the constants, standard equations and spectroscopic reference data from memory work for both papers, which is a real help. It does not remove the need to know which relationship applies, how to rearrange it, or what the result means chemically. The commonest failure in marked scripts is a student who finds the right equation in the booklet, substitutes correctly, and then cannot say what the answer implies about the reaction. The booklet shifts the difficulty from recall to selection and interpretation, and tutoring hours should follow that shift.

How long before the May session should Higher Level Chemistry revision start?+

The highest-leverage window is the term before the February mock examinations, because that is when predicted grades are set. A twelve-week block started in October or November produces a changed mark profile in time to influence the prediction, and leaves the spring free for paper practice. Starting after the mocks still works for technique and for the two-topic questions where Higher Level marks concentrate, but it is too late to rebuild DP1 content. The IB session dates themselves should be confirmed with your school's Diploma coordinator rather than taken from any tutoring page.

What is a tutor allowed to do with my child's Chemistry investigation draft?+

Read it, ask questions about it, and comment against the four criteria so your child knows which of the twenty-four marks are not yet earned. A tutor can show worked examples of uncertainty propagation, explain what an evaluation has to weigh rather than list, and point out that a graph choice does not support the conclusion. What a tutor cannot do is author any part of the report or hand back a version with sentences inserted. The student revises their own text, and each checkpoint leaves a written record the school can see.

Will Chemistry Higher Level be enough for a medical degree application from Dubai?+

Chemistry at Higher Level is the usual core requirement for medicine, and most medical schools ask for a second science alongside it, commonly Biology. Specific grade requirements and the admissions tests vary by country and by university, and they change year to year, so the only reliable source is the admissions page of the universities your child is applying to. Tutoring does not alter a prerequisite and is not required for any application. What it can do is move a Higher Level mark profile in the term before predicted grades are issued.

Our school predicted a 5 in Chemistry HL. Can that prediction move?+

Predictions come from internal assessment data, so they move when that data moves. The practical route is to find out which papers the internal examinations were built from and how Paper 1 and Paper 2 marks were weighted in the reported grade, then put the tutoring hours where the weighting is heaviest. Since Paper 2 is 44% of the final grade, a student whose internal Paper 2 mark improves usually sees the prediction follow at the next reporting point. No tutor can promise a grade, and anyone who does is selling something they cannot deliver.

Does an online lesson work for a subject with as much practical work as Chemistry HL?+

For the assessed parts, yes. Papers 1 and 2 are written, and the practical skills they test are data handling, uncertainty, graph work and evaluation, all of which work well on a shared screen with the student's own results in front of both people. The hands-on laboratory work happens at school, where the equipment and the supervision are, and that is where it should happen. Sessions support the design and the analysis around it. A shared whiteboard handles mechanisms better than most classrooms do, because every arrow can be drawn, erased and redrawn.

Can lessons run after Iftar during Ramadan for a Chemistry HL student?+

Yes, and a large share of Dubai Diploma families move to that pattern. School hours shorten during Ramadan and afternoon concentration drops, so a post-Iftar slot often produces better work than the usual 5pm one. The change needs agreeing in advance so the tutor's week is built around it rather than squeezed. Most families pause outright over Eid, which stretches a twelve-week block to fourteen weeks. The plan absorbs that; the one thing that does not work is leaving the decision until the first week of Ramadan.

What happens if no Chemistry Higher Level specialist is free in our preferred slot?+

You are told before you book rather than after. Higher Level Chemistry with investigation support in a narrow weekday evening window is a specific request, and in some weeks it cannot be filled. The options offered are a different time with the right specialist, a waiting period with an actual date attached, or a tutor whose Higher Level experience sits in a neighbouring area of the syllabus, described plainly so you can judge whether it fits. No page found in this market discloses a coverage limit, which is why it is stated here.

Does a Chemistry Higher Level grade matter for Ministry of Education equivalency in the UAE?+

Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process and it is not something a tutoring provider performs or influences. For the British track the published requirements are five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No verified International Baccalaureate points threshold has been read on the ministry's own pages, so none is published here. Check the current requirement with the ministry directly.

Start with one marked paper

The useful first step is not a conversation about goals. It is a script. Send your child's most recent Higher Level Chemistry paper with the teacher's marks still on it, say which school and which term the topic was taught, and book the free 45-minute first lesson. Your child sits one question under time, the tutor marks it with them, and you receive a written note the same evening naming what was lost and why. If the diagnosis is six hours of work, that is what you will be told. If it is a term, you will be told that too, with the residual list attached.
