IB DP Math AA HL Online Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Math AA HL online tutor in Dubai should be judged on paper, not on promises. Within a month of starting you should be looking at marked Paper 1 questions with the marks awarded line by line, an error log that names topics rather than moods, and an exploration draft that has moved. Analysis and Approaches at higher level is the hardest course most Dubai DP students will sit, and the only honest way to track it is evidence. Sessions run on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Marked by mark scheme line, so you see where method marks were earned or lost
  • A topic error log kept across weeks, not a general impression of progress
  • Sessions on Gulf Standard Time, planned around school mocks and deadlines
  • The exploration stays the student's own work; we read and question, never produce

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Judge AA HL progress on marked papers, not on how sessions felt

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at higher level is a 240-hour course assessed through three written papers and an exploration. Paper 1 runs two hours with no technology for 110 marks. Paper 2 runs two hours with a graphic display calculator for another 110. Paper 3 runs one hour for 55 marks across two extended problem-solving questions. The exploration carries the remaining share. That structure is the whole reason AA HL behaves differently from any other course a Dubai DP student takes: there are four separate skills, and a student can be strong at two of them and still land well below where their classwork suggests.

Which is why the first question to ask an IB DP Math AA HL online tutor in Dubai is what they will show you. Not what the plan is, what the artefacts are. After four to six weeks you should be holding marked questions with the method and answer marks separated, a topic-level error log built from those papers, a record of the time each question took against the marks available, and - if the exploration has started - a draft with comments against the published criteria. All of that is inspectable by a parent who has not done calculus in twenty years.

The reason the evidence matters more here than elsewhere is that AA HL failure is specific rather than general. A student who loses marks in Paper 1 almost always loses them in a small number of recurring ways: an integral attempted without rearranging first, a proof by induction where the inductive step assumes what it should derive, a trigonometric identity applied in the wrong direction, a complex number left in the wrong form for the question asked. None of those is a shortage of ability and none is fixed by doing more past papers. They are fixed by naming the error, drilling the specific move, and checking a fortnight later whether it recurred.

The same applies to time. Paper 1 gives two hours for 110 marks, which is roughly a mark a minute with nothing spare, and a sizeable share of Dubai students we see are not short of mathematics but short of pace, having spent twenty minutes on a six-mark part because they would not abandon an approach that was not working. That shows up immediately in a timed, marked paper and never shows up in homework. It is also one of the fastest things to improve, which is why we measure it from the first week.

This page sets out the course as it is actually assessed rather than as it is advertised: the three papers with their marks and weights, the five topics plus the additional HL content and the errors each one generates, why Paper 1 without a calculator is a separate exam, why Paper 3 is where HL grades are decided, how the AA and AI routes genuinely differ, what the exploration needs from an HL student, and how a marked paper becomes a weekly plan. It also carries the market rates for this work in AED with every figure attributed, because almost nobody in this search publishes a price at all.

Delivery is straightforward on this page: lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared whiteboard and the student's own script on screen. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE - home visits are a service we run only in India. For AA HL the online format is the better one anyway, because a student is matched with someone who teaches the course at higher level rather than with whoever lives nearby, and because working through a mark scheme is a screen task.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

AA HL is the end of a long mathematical build, and students arrive at it from several different starting points. Below is what each route gives them and what it leaves them to catch up.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Analysis and Approaches at higher level runs across both DP years for 240 teaching hours, covering number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus, each with additional higher level content. Assessment is three written papers plus an internally assessed exploration. Students take it alongside five other subjects, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS, which is why pacing rather than ability decides most outcomes.

Dubai DP timetables also carry the Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies lessons KHDA requires of every private school regardless of the licensed curriculum. For a 240-hour course that competes with five others, the practical effect is that AHL content is often taught quickly late in DP1, which is exactly where the Paper 3 material sits.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

MYP mathematics at extended level is the natural feed into AA HL, and its criterion on investigating patterns is the single best preparation for Paper 3 available anywhere in the IB. What MYP does not build is examination pace under non-calculator conditions, because its assessment is criterion-based rather than timed and technique-heavy.

Several Dubai schools run MYP to Year 11 then move straight into DP1. Those students usually handle the exploration and Paper 3 style comfortably and struggle initially with Paper 1 speed. IGCSE-trained students arrive with the opposite profile: fast, accurate, and unused to an open investigation with no stated method.

IGCSE and Additional MathematicsAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE routes

Extended IGCSE mathematics, and particularly Additional Mathematics where a school offers it, is the strongest pre-DP preparation for AA HL. The gap it leaves is calculus beyond introductory differentiation, formal proof, and complex numbers, all of which arrive early in DP1 and all of which generate the first wave of HL difficulty.

UK-curriculum schools dominate Dubai enrolment, and most run IGCSE at sixteen before splitting into A Level or the IB Diploma. Students coming from Extended IGCSE without Additional Mathematics typically need focused work on algebraic fluency in the first term of DP1, because AA HL assumes manipulation speed that IGCSE does not require.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Listed for continuity. PYP builds number sense and inquiry habits rather than technique, and the connection to AA HL is indirect: students who learned to explain their reasoning in primary school find the exploration and the Paper 3 structure more natural than students who learned to produce answers.

Dubai has a large PYP population with considerable movement at Year 7, so many AA HL students here began in a different system entirely. It makes no difference to the examination; it does mean the mathematical vocabulary they were taught first may not match the course's.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

AA HL is five syllabus topics plus additional higher level content, and the errors it generates are topic-specific. Below is the map with what actually costs marks in each, which is also how the weekly error log is organised.

Number and algebra: proof

HL additional content

Proof by induction, contradiction and counterexample. The recurring failure in the inductive step is assuming the result for n plus one rather than deriving it from the assumption for n. Examiners award method marks for the structure, so a student who writes the framework correctly scores even when the algebra stalls.

Number and algebra: complex numbers

HL additional content

Cartesian, modulus-argument and Euler forms, De Moivre's theorem, roots of unity and polynomial roots. Marks go missing by staying in the wrong form: a question asking for powers or roots wants polar or exponential form, and students who force Cartesian algebra run out of time rather than ability.

Number and algebra: sequences, series and binomial

SL and HL content

Arithmetic and geometric work, sigma notation, the binomial theorem extended at HL to negative and fractional indices, and partial fractions. Convergence conditions are the quiet mark-loser, because students apply an infinite sum formula without checking the common ratio.

Functions

SL and HL content

Transformations, composite and inverse functions, the factor and remainder theorems, rational functions, odd and even functions, and inequalities. Domain and range cost more marks than any other single idea here, particularly on inverse functions and on the modulus graphs in the HL content.

Geometry and trigonometry: identities and equations

SL and HL content

Compound and double angle work, reciprocal and inverse trigonometric functions, and equations over a stated interval. The two standard losses are missing solutions inside the interval and applying an identity in the less useful direction, which turns a four-line question into a page.

Geometry and trigonometry: vectors

HL additional content

Vector equations of lines and planes, scalar and vector products, intersections and angles. Marks come from setting the problem up correctly rather than from the arithmetic, and students who sketch before calculating consistently outperform those who do not.

Statistics and probability

SL and HL content

Discrete and continuous random variables, the normal distribution, and at HL conditional probability with Bayes' theorem, probability density functions, expectation and variance of transformed variables, and the central limit theorem. Interpretation in context is where the final mark of a part usually sits.

Calculus: differentiation

SL and HL content

Chain, product and quotient rules, implicit differentiation, related rates and optimisation. The HL step that catches students is recognising when implicit differentiation is required rather than rearranging first, and related-rates questions where the variable being differentiated is not the obvious one.

Calculus: integration

SL and HL content

Substitution, integration by parts, partial fractions, improper integrals and volumes of revolution. More Paper 1 marks are lost here than anywhere else, almost always by starting to integrate before choosing a method. Thirty seconds spent identifying the technique saves ten minutes.

Calculus: series and differential equations

HL additional content

Maclaurin series, limits and L'Hopital's rule, separation of variables, homogeneous equations, the integrating factor and Euler's method. This block is taught late, appears heavily in Paper 3, and is the most common reason a strong DP1 student stalls in DP2.

Paper 3 problem solving

HL only

Two compulsory extended questions over one hour, each building from accessible early parts to an unfamiliar conclusion. It is a technique in itself: read the whole question first, use the structure the examiner has provided, and never abandon a later part because an earlier one failed.

The mathematical exploration

SL and HL, internally assessed

An independent piece marked on five published criteria. For an HL student the binding issue is mathematics commensurate with the course: an exploration that stays inside SL content cannot reach the top band of that criterion, however well presented it is.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways Dubai families run AA HL support. All are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared whiteboard and the student's own scripts on screen.

Weekly one-to-one across DP1 and DP2

A standing session that tracks the school's scheme of work a fortnight behind, so the tutor is consolidating rather than pre-teaching. Each session opens with the error log from last week and closes with a timed question set. The accumulation is the point: HL mathematics rewards the student who has met the same type of question six times under time pressure, not the one who has seen it explained well once.

  • Error log reviewed at the start of every session
  • Timed question set issued at the end, marked before the next session
  • Topic sequence kept behind the school's, never ahead of it
  • Paused during mock weeks rather than wasted

Paper 3 intensive

A focused block of four to six sessions on the one-hour paper that decides a disproportionate number of HL grades. Paper 3 is two long questions built in parts, and the technique is learnable: read to the end before starting, treat each part's result as a tool for the next, keep going after a failed part, and write enough working for method marks even when the answer does not arrive. Most students have never been taught it explicitly.

  • Whole past questions attempted under the real hour
  • Marked against the scheme to separate method from answer marks
  • Explicit drills on continuing past a failed part
  • The AHL calculus and proof blocks revisited as they arise

Non-calculator discipline block

Short and specific, for the student whose Paper 2 is comfortably ahead of their Paper 1. Two hours with no technology for 110 marks exposes algebraic fluency, exact values, surds, and the habit of choosing an integration method before starting. The block is drill-heavy by design, because the gap is speed and accuracy rather than understanding.

  • Exact-value trigonometry and surd manipulation drilled to automaticity
  • Method selection practised before any integration is attempted
  • Timed Section A sets at a mark a minute
  • Progress measured as marks per minute, visibly

Course decision session

One session for the DP1 family asking whether AA HL is the right course. It is answered with a marked paper rather than an opinion: a timed set of HL questions, scored against the scheme, alongside what the student's intended degree route actually asks for. Sometimes the answer is to stay and work; sometimes it is to move to AA SL or to AI HL, and that is a conversation to have with the school early while the change is still administratively possible.

  • A real timed paper, marked, rather than a general assessment
  • The AHL content explained honestly, including the DP2 load
  • Degree requirements checked against the programme's own published entry criteria
  • The decision referred back to the DP coordinator, who holds the deadlines

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The evidence an AA HL tutor should produce in the first month

  • Marked scripts with method and answer marks shown separately
  • An error log by topic, with recurrence counts, updated weekly
  • Minutes spent against marks available on every timed set
  • An exploration draft with criterion-tagged comments and version history

Within four to six weeks of starting, a Dubai family paying for higher level mathematics support should be able to look at four things and form their own view without understanding the mathematics. None of them is hard to produce, and a tutor who cannot produce them is asking to be judged on atmosphere.

The first is marked work with the marks separated. A mark scheme awards method marks and answer marks differently, and the distinction is the single most useful diagnostic in the course. A student scoring the method and dropping the answer has an accuracy problem that drills fix quickly. A student scoring neither has a technique gap in a named topic. A student scoring the answer with no working is losing marks they have already earned, which is a presentation habit and the fastest repair available.

The second is a topic-level error log. Not a list of chapters covered, a list of errors with their topic and their recurrence: integration method chosen before rearranging, four occurrences; inductive step assumed rather than derived, three; interval solutions missed in trigonometric equations, five. Within a month that log is specific enough to drive a weekly plan, and within a term it should be visibly shrinking in the categories that were worked on.

The third is time against marks. Every timed question set should record the minutes spent against the marks available, because Paper 1 and Paper 2 allow roughly a mark a minute and Paper 3 is tighter in a different way. A student who understands everything and finishes nothing has a pacing problem, and it is invisible in homework and obvious in a log.

The fourth, once it exists, is the exploration draft with comments against the published criteria. For an HL student the question that matters most is whether the mathematics is commensurate with the course, because an exploration built on SL content has a ceiling no amount of presentation will raise. A draft with comments and a version history also establishes beyond argument that the work is the student's own, which matters in a component that is internally assessed.

02

How AA HL is actually assessed

Four components, four different demands. Paper 1 is two hours with no technology for 110 marks, divided into a section of shorter questions and a section of extended ones. Paper 2 is two hours with a graphic display calculator for another 110 marks in the same shape. Paper 3 is one hour for 55 marks across two compulsory extended problem-solving questions and exists only at higher level. The exploration is internally assessed against five published criteria.

The weightings mean the written papers carry the overwhelming majority of the grade, and that Paper 3, despite being the shortest by far, carries a substantial share for the hour it occupies. Per minute of examination time, Paper 3 is the most valuable paper in the course. It is also the one that receives the least practice in most schools, because the AHL content it leans on is taught late and the mock calendar in Dubai often arrives before it has been covered properly.

A formula booklet is supplied in all papers, which changes what is worth memorising. Students who spend revision time learning what is printed for them are spending it badly; the value is in knowing which formula applies and being fast at the manipulation the booklet does not do for you. The graphic display calculator is required for Papers 2 and 3, and calculator fluency is a genuine assessable skill - the student who can find an intersection, a definite integral or a distribution value in fifteen seconds has several extra minutes across a paper.

Marks are awarded by scheme, and the scheme is generous to visible method. This is the most actionable fact in the whole course. An unfinished question with clear working scores; a wrong answer with no working scores nothing. Students who erase their failed attempts are deleting marks. We teach the opposite habit from the first session, and it shows up in the next school assessment.

One caution on boundaries. Grade boundaries move session by session and are published by the IB after each series, so no page should be quoting a mark total for a particular grade. If a provider tells you how many marks a seven requires, treat that as a sales claim rather than information, and ask your child's teacher what the school has seen across recent cohorts instead.

Paper 1 without a calculator is a separate examination

  • Exact values, surds and log laws automatic rather than reconstructed
  • Thirty seconds of method selection before any integration
  • One manipulation per line, so errors are findable without restarting
  • A rule for abandoning a part, agreed in advance and practised
  • Every failed attempt left on the page for method marks

Dubai students who are comfortable in class and uncomfortable in Paper 1 are not usually short of understanding. They are short of the specific fluency that a non-calculator paper demands, and it is a trainable skill rather than a talent. Two hours and 110 marks means roughly a mark a minute, and every second spent reconstructing an exact value or grinding through algebra that should be automatic is a second removed from the questions that need thought.

The first fluency is exact values and surds. Trigonometric exact values, rationalising, simplifying nested radicals, and handling logarithms and exponentials by their laws rather than by estimation. These appear constantly in Section A and should take no deliberate thought at all. Students who hesitate here lose five to ten marks on a paper simply by running out of time at the end.

The second is method selection before execution. Integration is the clearest case: substitution, by parts, partial fractions and recognising a standard form are different routes, and starting down the wrong one costs several minutes. The discipline we teach is thirty seconds of deliberate choice before the pen moves, and the effect on Paper 1 scores is larger than any content teaching we could do in the same time.

The third is algebraic resilience on long questions. Section B asks for sustained work where part three depends on part one, and a sign error early is expensive. Writing in a way that allows checking - one manipulation per line, stated intermediate results - is not neatness for its own sake; it is how a student finds their own error in forty seconds instead of restarting.

The fourth is the decision to abandon. A student who refuses to leave a question is making a scoring error, not showing determination. The honest rule is that if a part has resisted two genuine approaches and more than its share of minutes, it gets marked and left, with whatever working exists on the page for method marks, and revisited if time allows. Teaching that single habit routinely moves a Paper 1 score more than teaching a new topic does.

04

Paper 3 is where higher level grades are decided

Paper 3 exists only at higher level. One hour, 55 marks, two compulsory questions, each starting from something accessible and ending somewhere the student has not been before. It rewards a different thing from the other papers: not recall of technique but willingness to follow a structure into unfamiliar mathematics. Students who have never practised it under time conditions usually underperform their ability on it, and in Dubai that is common because the AHL content it leans on is taught late.

The structure is the help, and most students do not use it. A Paper 3 question is built in parts deliberately, so that part (a) produces a result part (c) needs, and a definition in part (b) is the tool for part (d). Reading the entire question before starting takes ninety seconds and changes what the early parts are for. Students who work part by part without looking ahead repeatedly do unnecessary work and then run out of time at exactly the point the marks get heavy.

The second habit is continuing past a failure. In a paper where parts depend on each other, a student who cannot complete part (b) often stops, when the correct move is to state the result part (b) should have produced, say so explicitly, and use it in part (c). Examiners can award the subsequent work. Abandoning the rest of a question because of one part is the most expensive single mistake available on this paper.

The third is writing enough. Paper 3's extended parts carry substantial method marks, and a student who has set up a differential equation correctly, separated the variables and then stalled on the integration has earned real marks if the work is visible. The same student who scribbles and erases has earned nothing. We drill this with marked past questions until the habit is automatic.

The content Paper 3 draws on most heavily is the AHL material taught last: proof by induction, complex numbers in polar and Euler form, vectors and planes, Maclaurin series, differential equations by separation, integrating factor and Euler's method. That is the DP2 block in most Dubai schools, which is why a Paper 3 intensive usually belongs in the second half of DP2 rather than earlier - after the content exists, with enough weeks left to practise it.

05

AA against AI at higher level: the honest comparison

The Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation routes are genuinely different courses rather than a harder and an easier version of one. AA is algebra, proof and calculus with a strong emphasis on exact and analytic methods. AI is modelling, data, and the use of technology to handle situations that have no neat closed form. Both exist at higher level and both are demanding; they are demanding in different directions.

The decision that matters is the degree route, and it has to be read from the programmes themselves rather than from general advice. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics programmes specify a calculus-heavy mathematics course or a particular HL subject at a particular grade, and the exact wording differs between universities and between countries. Read the published entry requirements for the specific programmes a student is considering, and ask the school's university counsellor to confirm the reading in writing. Nothing on this page should be treated as a university's requirement.

The second consideration is fit, and a marked paper answers it better than a conversation. A student who enjoys a proof, tolerates long algebra and likes an exact answer belongs in AA. A student who thinks well about a real situation, handles data confidently and finds extended symbolic manipulation a grind may do significantly better in AI HL, which is not a step down and will not be read as one by an admissions reader who understands the IB.

The third is timing. Changing route is an administrative decision with deadlines held by the DP coordinator, and it gets harder as DP1 progresses. The right moment to test the question is the first term of DP1, with a timed HL paper marked against the scheme and the student's intended degree requirements on the table. A decision made then is a decision; one made in DP2 is usually damage control.

The table below compares the two courses on the dimensions that actually differ. It deliberately does not list universities, because entry requirements change and a wrong line in a table like this would send a family in the wrong direction for two years.

Turning a marked paper into next week's plan

A marked paper is only useful if something changes because of it, and most students treat marking as a verdict rather than as data. The routine we use is mechanical, which is the point: every marked script is converted into categorised errors, every category gets a drill, and every drill gets checked a fortnight later. Progress is then visible as a falling recurrence count in named categories rather than as a feeling.

The categories are deliberately narrow. Not weak at calculus, but chose an integration method before rearranging. Not careless, but dropped the constant of integration in definite work. Not weak at trigonometry, but lost solutions inside the stated interval. Narrow categories produce specific drills; broad categories produce more past papers, which is what students do by default and why six weeks can pass with no measurable change.

The drill then has to be short and repeated. Ten integrals where the only task is to name the method and not to evaluate. Fifteen trigonometric equations where the only task is to list every solution in the interval. Five inductive steps written out as structure with the algebra provided. Each takes a few minutes, each targets one error, and each gets repeated until the recurrence count falls. This is unglamorous and it is the part that moves marks.

The fortnightly check is what makes the log honest. A category that was drilled and still recurs means the drill was wrong or the understanding beneath it is missing, and that is a content conversation rather than a practice one. A category that stops recurring comes off the active list. Over a term the log should be visibly different, and a parent can see that without reading a single line of mathematics.

Timing data sits beside the error log and is treated the same way. Minutes against marks, question by question, with a target of roughly a mark a minute for Papers 1 and 2. A student consistently over on Section A and short of time in Section B has a fluency problem, not a comprehension problem, and the drill block is the answer. That diagnosis takes one timed paper and is almost never made in school, because school marking does not record time.

The exploration, for an HL student specifically

The exploration is marked on five published criteria worth twenty marks between them, and for an AA HL student one of those criteria does most of the damage. Use of mathematics asks for work commensurate with the course, correct and thorough. An HL student whose exploration stays inside standard level content has placed a ceiling on it that no amount of presentation or structure will lift.

What commensurate means in practice is mathematics from the higher level part of the syllabus, used correctly, with the student understanding what they are doing. Reaching for something exotic from outside the course and applying it incorrectly scores worse than a correct, thorough piece of genuine HL work. We steer students towards the AHL content they have actually met - differential equations, series, complex numbers, vectors - applied to a question they chose themselves.

Topic choice is where HL students most often go wrong, and it goes wrong in two directions. Some pick something they care about that has no mathematics above SL level in it; some pick something mathematically impressive that they cannot explain. The test we apply is whether the student can describe, in their own words, what the mathematics is doing and why it suits the question. If they cannot, the topic is wrong regardless of how it looks.

The other criteria are gettable and frequently abandoned. Personal engagement asks for evidence of the student's own choices, which means a decision recorded somewhere - their own data, their own question, an approach they tried and dropped. Reflection asks for evaluation as the work develops rather than a concluding paragraph. Presentation and mathematical communication reward defined variables, consistent notation and labelled graphs, which are rules rather than skills.

Our boundary here is the same as everywhere in the DP. We teach the mathematics, explain what each criterion requires, read a draft and say which criterion is underserved, and ask the questions that make the student's own thinking visible. We do not supply a topic, write any section, or produce a model to be adapted. The exploration is internally assessed by a teacher who knows what the student's own work looks like, and a version history is the simplest protection there is.

What AA HL tuition costs in the Dubai market

Three of the six best-ranking pages for these searches publish no price at all and the others quote US dollars, which is not the currency a Dubai family transacts in. Below are the AED bands actually visible in this market as of October 2026, with the provider that published each figure named, organised by the stage of the course. These are market rates rather than an IB Gram price list; our own rate follows the free trial, once the match is known.

Higher level mathematics sits at the specialist end of the market and should. A tutor at the budget rate is rarely teaching AA HL, because the pool of people who can teach Maclaurin series and Paper 3 technique is small and those people have other options. A family quoted a general maths rate for AA HL is usually being quoted for general maths, and the first three sessions tend to demonstrate it.

For market context: EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase publishes AED 270; Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table shows in-home visits at AED 180-350 and specialist support at AED 200-450 or more; BartyED publishes AED 650. Monthly packages visible in this market run about AED 799 for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session are AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Three questions to ask before comparing two quotes. Whether VAT is included, because providers here are inconsistent about it. Whether the tutor teaches Analysis and Approaches at higher level specifically, and how that was verified - teaching A Level Further Mathematics is not the same thing and neither is teaching AA SL. And what any examiner claim rests on, because examiner status confers no access to marking decisions or grade boundaries, and a rate justified on it is a claim about a specific person you are entitled to test.

For household context, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Against a flat fee bill, a weekly specialist hour across the two DP years is a visible commitment, which is an argument for measuring it: an error log that is not shrinking after a term is a reason to change something rather than to continue paying.

Scheduling AA HL against the Dubai school year

A weekly hour only works if it survives the year, and in Dubai the year has known hazards. School mock examinations, internal assessment deadlines in five other subjects, the Extended Essay submission, a long summer when many families are abroad, and in some years Ramadan. Planning around those at the start is the difference between thirty useful sessions and twenty useful sessions with ten wasted ones.

The sequencing that works for this course has a clear shape. DP1 first term goes on algebraic fluency, because AA HL assumes manipulation speed that neither IGCSE nor MYP requires. DP1 second and third terms consolidate the content as the school teaches it, always a fortnight behind rather than ahead. The DP1 summer is for the exploration, which needs thinking time rather than teaching time and is the one piece of work that can genuinely progress while a family is away. DP2 is content completion, then Paper 3, then timed papers, then non-calculator drilling into the final weeks.

Two Dubai-specific adjustments matter. Sessions pause during school mock weeks rather than competing with them: a student revising for mocks does not need new content, and the marked mock scripts are the most valuable diagnostic of the entire year. And during Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar slots, with heavy timed work scheduled either side of the month rather than through it, because a two-hour timed paper at 4pm in Ramadan tells nobody anything useful.

On the calendar itself, this page publishes no IB examination or results dates. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so any date here would be second-hand, and a wrong date on a page like this costs a family real planning time. Your child's DP coordinator holds the session calendar and the internal deadlines, and one email produces a list worth more than any generic timeline. Cambridge and Pearson publish their own International GCSE and A Level timetables, which matters for siblings on the British route but not for AA HL.

Two context points about the Dubai school market worth knowing while planning. Dubai's private school sector served 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 with seventeen different curricula, the UK curriculum accounting for 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian 26, US 14 and the International Baccalaureate 7. Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. Growing IB provision means more AA HL sets and, in the short term, more small sets with a shared teacher - which is precisely the situation where an external specialist hour earns its cost.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and the AA HL session that works there

Because this is online tuition, geography stops deciding who teaches your child and starts deciding when the session runs. Below is how the pattern varies across Dubai, which is mostly a function of school end times and family routine.

Damac Hills and Dubai Land

Long school journeys mean a 4pm start rarely works and a 6.30pm start nearly always does. Students here tend to book two shorter midweek sessions rather than one long weekend block, which suits Paper 1 drilling far better.

Jumeirah Village Triangle

Mixed school attendance across several DP providers, so AA HL students here are often the only one in their friend group taking the course. A weekly slot plus a shared question log substitutes for the study group they do not have.

The Lakes and Emirates Living

Settled families with strong academic routines and a high proportion of students targeting engineering or economics degrees. Requests usually arrive early in DP1 and focus on building algebraic fluency before the AHL content lands.

Dubai Production City and Studio City

Newer DP intake with a wide ability spread in the same HL set. The most frequent first conversation is whether AA HL is the right course at all, which is a legitimate question best answered in DP1 with a marked paper in front of everyone.

Nad Al Hamar and Al Rashidiya

Established eastern communities with large school cohorts and a preference for post-Maghrib sessions. During Ramadan these move to post-Iftar slots and the heavy past-paper work is scheduled either side of the month.

Zabeel and Al Kifaf

Central, apartment-dense and close to several long-running DP schools. Students here often come with marked school mocks already in hand, which makes the first session unusually productive because the error log can be built immediately.

Dubai Islands and Al Mamzar

Smaller cohorts and a longer trip to most DP schools, so local specialist supply is thin for a course like AA HL. Online matching is the practical difference between a higher level mathematics teacher and a general maths tutor.

Majan and Arjan

Fast-growing communities with many mid-year arrivals. The usual starting point is a diagnostic on the AHL topics the previous school had not yet reached, because syllabus order varies between schools more than families expect.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai schools with large AA HL sets

A large higher level set means a dedicated specialist teaching it and a genuine peer group, which is the best environment for this course. Students we support attend schools in this group, and the requests we get are usually targeted: Paper 3 technique, or one AHL topic that did not land.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy

Dubai schools where Applications and Interpretation is the default

In some schools the AI route carries most of the cohort and the AA HL set is small, which can mean a shared teacher and a faster pace through the additional content. Students we support attend schools in this group, and the common need is depth on the HL calculus block.

  • Raffles World Academy
  • Uptown International School
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • Greenfield International School

Dubai schools with newer or small higher level cohorts

Where the HL set is very small, students can be strong and still isolated, with no one to compare an approach against. Students we support attend schools in this group, and a weekly external session functions as the peer discussion the set cannot provide.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked paper, not a description

The most useful thing you can send is your child's most recent marked school assessment, however it went. Add the DP year, the school, which AHL topics have been taught, and whether the exploration has started. One marked script is worth more than a paragraph of history.

  2. 02

Free trial with the script on screen

Sixty minutes on the actual paper. The tutor works through where method marks were earned and lost, identifies the two or three error categories driving the score, and sets one drill. You keep the written summary. No card is taken to arrange it.

  3. 03

Agree the plan against the school's sequence

We ask for the school's scheme of work and mock dates, then plan to sit a fortnight behind the teaching rather than ahead of it. The plan names which weeks are mock weeks, which are travel weeks and where the Paper 3 block will sit.

  4. 04

Weekly session, timed set, error log

Each session opens with the error log and closes with a timed question set to be completed before the next one. Marking separates method from answer marks, minutes are recorded against marks, and the log is updated in front of the student.

  5. 05

Fortnightly check on the drilled categories

Categories that were drilled get retested two weeks later. Recurrence that has not fallen means the drill or the underlying understanding was wrong, and we change it. Categories that stop recurring leave the active list. That is what the parent report shows.

  6. 06

Review at week six against the first script

A short written comparison of the current timed paper against the first one: marks, pace, and which error categories have gone. If nothing has moved, we say so and change the tutor or the approach rather than asking for more time.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Everything is on paper

Marked scripts with method and answer marks separated, an error log by topic with recurrence counts, minutes against marks, and exploration drafts with criterion comments. A parent can read all of it without doing any mathematics, and compare it month to month.

Taught by someone who teaches this course

AA HL is not general maths with harder questions. Maclaurin series, the integrating factor, Bayes' theorem and Paper 3 technique are specific, and online matching means the tutor is chosen for the course rather than for the distance to your community.

Paper 3 treated as its own skill

One hour, 55 marks, two extended questions, and almost no explicit teaching of how to attack it in most schools. We drill reading to the end first, using earlier parts as tools, and continuing past a failed part - the three habits that decide the paper.

Non-calculator fluency measured, not assumed

A two-hour paper with no technology at roughly a mark a minute exposes algebraic speed. We measure minutes against marks from the first timed set, because the gap between understanding and finishing is where most Dubai AA HL marks are lost.

Honest about course fit

Sometimes the right answer in DP1 is to move to AA SL or AI HL, and we will say so with a marked paper to support it. That conversation belongs with your DP coordinator while a change is still possible, not in DP2 when it is not.

Rates you can check and a plan you can audit

Every AED figure on this page names the provider that published it with October 2026 as the as-of date. Our rate follows the free trial. The error log is the audit: if it is not shrinking after a term, that is a reason to change something.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How is Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL assessed?+

Four components. Paper 1 is two hours with no technology for 110 marks, split between shorter and extended questions. Paper 2 is two hours with a graphic display calculator for another 110 marks in the same shape. Paper 3 is one hour for 55 marks across two compulsory extended problem-solving questions and exists only at higher level. The mathematical exploration is internally assessed against five published criteria. A formula booklet is supplied in the examinations. Confirm the current weightings in the mathematics guide your school holds, because the IB revises subject guides on a rolling cycle.

Why is my son fine in Paper 2 and losing marks in Paper 1?+

Almost always fluency and pace rather than understanding. Paper 1 allows two hours for 110 marks, roughly a mark a minute, with no calculator to fall back on. Students who reconstruct exact trigonometric values, hesitate over surds or start integrating before choosing a method spend minutes they then do not have for Section B. The diagnosis takes one timed paper with minutes recorded against marks. The fix is drill-shaped and fast: short repeated sets where the only task is to name an integration method, or to list every solution in an interval, until those decisions stop costing time.

What exactly does Paper 3 ask for and how should my daughter prepare?+

Two compulsory extended questions in one hour, each starting accessibly and ending in unfamiliar territory, together worth 55 marks. It rewards following a structure rather than recalling a technique. Three habits decide it: read the whole question before starting, because early parts produce tools later parts need; keep going after a part that fails, stating the result it should have produced and using it; and write enough working that method marks are available even when the answer does not arrive. Practise whole past questions under the real hour, marked against the scheme, rather than isolated parts.

Which AA HL topics cause the most trouble for Dubai students?+

The additional higher level content taught late in the course: proof by induction, complex numbers in polar and Euler form, vectors and planes, Maclaurin series, and differential equations by separation, integrating factor and Euler's method. Two things combine to make this block difficult. It is mathematically harder than what came before, and in a crowded Dubai DP timetable it is often taught quickly in DP2 alongside internal assessment deadlines in five other subjects. It is also precisely the material Paper 3 leans on, which is why a Paper 3 block usually belongs in the second half of DP2.

Should my child take AA HL or AI HL?+

Decide on the degree route and on fit, and test both with a marked paper rather than a conversation. AA is algebra, proof and analytic calculus; AI is modelling, data and technology-led problem solving. Neither is a soft option. Engineering, physics, mathematics and many economics programmes specify a calculus-heavy course, but the exact wording differs by university and country, so read the published entry requirements for the specific programmes and have the school's counsellor confirm it in writing. On fit: a student who enjoys proof and exact answers belongs in AA; one who thinks well with data may score considerably higher in AI HL.

Is it too late to switch from AA HL to AA SL in DP1?+

Usually possible early in DP1 and progressively harder after that, and it is an administrative decision with deadlines your DP coordinator holds rather than something a tutor can advise on alone. What we can contribute is evidence: a timed higher level paper marked against the scheme, a clear view of which errors are fluency and which are conceptual, and an honest account of the DP2 content load still ahead. Some students who look borderline in the first term are simply short of algebraic speed and improve rapidly. Others are genuinely better suited to standard level, and a term of marked papers shows which.

How many AA HL sessions a week does a Dubai DP student usually need?+

One weekly hour is the common pattern and it is enough for most students, provided the work between sessions actually happens. The structure that makes a single hour effective is the timed set: the session ends with questions to complete before the next one, and the next one starts with the marked results. Two sessions a week makes sense in two situations - a student catching up a whole AHL topic the school has already moved past, and the final weeks before examinations when timed papers need marking and discussing quickly. More than two is usually a sign the plan is wrong.

Can a tutor help with the mathematical exploration without crossing a line?+

Yes, and the boundary is specific. A tutor may teach the mathematics, explain each of the five criteria and what they reward, read a draft and say which criterion is underserved, and ask the questions that make the student's own reasoning visible. A tutor may not supply the topic, write any section, restructure the student's text for them, or hand over a model to be adapted. The internally assessed nature of the component makes this important: a teacher who marks the class knows what each student's own work looks like, and a shared document with version history removes any ambiguity.

Why is my daughter's exploration scoring low when it looks excellent?+

The most likely reason for a higher level student is the use of mathematics criterion, which asks for work commensurate with the course, correct and thorough. An exploration built on standard level content has a ceiling regardless of how well it is presented or structured. The second likely reason is personal engagement, which requires evidence of the student's own choices - their own data, their own question, something they tried and dropped - and a topic taken from a list of ideas shows none. Both are diagnosable from one reading against the criteria, and both are fixable while the draft is still open.

How important is the graphic display calculator for Papers 2 and 3?+

It is required, and fluency with it is a genuine assessable advantage. A student who can find an intersection, evaluate a definite integral, solve an equation numerically or read a distribution value in seconds has several extra minutes across a two-hour paper, and those minutes land on the extended questions where the marks are heavy. Conversely a student who navigates menus slowly loses time they cannot recover. Calculator work is worth deliberate practice in its own right, including knowing which tasks are faster by hand - which is a judgement, and one worth drilling.

How many marks does a 7 in AA HL need?+

Nobody can tell you, because grade boundaries are set by the IB after each examination series and move between sessions according to how the papers performed. Any provider quoting you a fixed mark total for a grade is making a sales claim rather than giving you information. What is useful instead is a mark out of 110 on a timed past paper, marked against that paper's own scheme, tracked across several attempts. Your child's teacher will also have a sense of what recent cohorts in that school have needed, which is better guidance than any general figure.

Can sessions work around school mocks and Ramadan in Dubai?+

Yes, and both should be planned for rather than worked through. We pause sessions during mock weeks, because a student revising does not need new content and the marked mock scripts are the single most valuable diagnostic of the year. During Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar slots and heavy timed work is scheduled either side of the month, since a two-hour timed paper in the late afternoon during Ramadan tells nobody anything useful. Because lessons are online on Gulf Standard Time, moving a standing slot for a month is an administrative change rather than a problem.

What should AA HL tuition cost per hour in Dubai?+

Higher level mathematics sits at the specialist end of this market. Published figures as of October 2026: budget providers advertise from AED 33-65; Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase publishes AED 270; Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table shows specialist support at AED 200-450 or more and in-home visits at AED 180-350; BartyED publishes AED 650. Those are market rates and not our prices; ours follows the free trial. Ask whether VAT is included, and ask specifically whether the tutor teaches Analysis and Approaches at higher level, because AA SL and A Level Further Mathematics are different jobs.

My child has six weeks until exams and is well short in AA HL. What actually helps?+

Triage, not teaching. Six weeks is enough to change a grade and not enough to cover missing content broadly, so the work is picking targets. Start with a full timed Paper 1 and Paper 2, marked with method and answer marks separated and minutes recorded. That identifies the three or four error categories costing the most marks, which are usually fluency and pace rather than topics. Then drill those specifically, add Paper 3 technique because it is learnable quickly, and make sure every failed attempt stays on the page for method marks. Nobody can promise an outcome, and anyone who does is best avoided.

Do you teach AA HL online only, or do tutors come to the house in Dubai?+

Online only. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Dubai students are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared whiteboard and the student's own marked scripts on screen. For higher level mathematics that is the better arrangement rather than a compromise: the pool of people who teach Analysis and Approaches at higher level is small, so matching on the course rather than on the drive genuinely changes who teaches your child, and working through a mark scheme is a screen task anyway.

Send one marked paper and we will show you the diagnosis

Everything on this page comes back to the same starting point: a marked script. Send your child's most recent school assessment in Analysis and Approaches at higher level, however it went, and book the free trial. In that hour we will separate the method marks from the answer marks, name the two or three error categories driving the score, record the time spent against the marks available, and set one drill. You will keep the written summary whether or not you continue. If the honest conclusion is that the problem is pace rather than mathematics and six weeks of drilling will do it, we will tell you that.
