IB DP Math AI SL Online Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP math AI SL online tutor in Dubai should be able to show you the work: a marked Paper 2 script with the lost context marks circled, a topic error log that gets shorter month by month, and a review at six weeks with the scripts on the table. Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is two ninety-minute papers and one exploration, and every part of it leaves something a parent in Dubai can read for themselves. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • A topic error log kept from the first session and shown at review
  • Both AI SL papers allow technology, so working is marked line by line
  • Free trial lesson first, no card details taken, no obligation
  • Lessons online one-to-one; IB Gram runs no UAE centre

The documents an AI SL family should end up holding

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is 150 teaching hours, assessed by two papers of ninety minutes each, worth 80 marks and 40% apiece, plus one exploration marked out of 20 and worth the remaining fifth of the grade. There is no third paper at Standard Level. Technology is permitted in both papers, which matters more than it sounds: it means the calculator is never the excuse, and every lost mark can be traced to a decision visible in the student's own working.

Parents are usually sold a feeling and then asked to renew on the strength of it. A better arrangement produces documents. After a term of weekly AI SL support, a family should be holding about a dozen dated scripts, a topic error log showing which mistakes recur and which have stopped, and one written review that says whether the weekly hour is still worth holding. None of that requires trust. All of it can be read in an evening, and all of it belongs to you rather than to the provider who produced it.

The error log is the part most providers skip and the part that does the work. Each entry records the date, the topic, the question, and the category of the mistake: wrong model chosen, right answer never interpreted, rounded too early, calculator in the wrong mode, or question misread. Within a month the log stops being a list and starts being a pattern, and the pattern tells you what the next six sessions should target. A log that gets shorter is the most honest progress signal this subject produces, and it arrives weeks before any school report says anything at all.

AI SL has a distinctive failure profile that the log exposes quickly. Statistics and probability takes 36 of the 150 guide hours, more than any other topic, and functions takes 31. The marks lost in those blocks are rarely about computation, because the technology handles that. They are lost on choosing a model that does not fit the data, on quoting a coefficient without saying what it means for the situation described, and on stopping at the number the calculator produced rather than answering the question asked.

What follows sets out the components and what each script reveals, the places AI SL marks leak, how an error log is read, what the gap from MYP or IGCSE actually measures, the authorship evidence behind the exploration, and the Ministry of Education equivalency paperwork these grades eventually feed into. Lessons for Dubai families run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; that is an India-only service, and the reason it matters here is the record a session leaves behind.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 and Paper 2: ninety minutes each, 80 marks each, 40% each, technology allowed
  • No Paper 3 at Standard Level; Higher Level adds one and ninety more guide hours
  • Statistics and probability is the largest AI SL block at 36 guide hours
  • The exploration is 20 marks across five criteria, lettered A to E
  • Ask for the error log, not a percentage, at the end of the first month
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

AI SL students in Dubai come from several starting points, and each one leaves a different kind of record behind. The three stages below describe what a family can actually inspect at each point, and what that document does and does not tell you about readiness for Standard Level.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

At Standard Level the Diploma produces three assessed pieces of mathematics: two ninety-minute papers and the exploration. Alongside them a school generates mock scripts, internal deadlines and a predicted grade. The predicted grade is the least useful of those for planning, because it compresses everything into one digit. The mock script is the most useful, because it is the only timed, full-length, externally styled evidence most students produce before the real session.

Dubai schools set their own mock windows and their own exploration deadlines, and those dates vary between schools a few kilometres apart. For an AI SL family that means the first comparable evidence usually arrives in the first term of DP2. Until then the usable material is whatever the subject teacher has marked, which is why we ask for it in the first message rather than wait for a mock to appear.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

MYP mathematics is assessed against four criteria rather than papers, and criterion C, communicating, is the one that predicts AI SL performance best. A student who writes clear explanations of what their answer means is already doing the thing AI SL pays for. A student with strong procedural marks and thin communication will lose context marks steadily at Standard Level, and that shows up in the error log within two weeks.

Dubai's IB continuum schools run large MYP cohorts in Al Barsha, Nad Al Sheba and Mirdif, and the AI or AA choice is usually made in MYP 5. One timed, unseen, data-based question marked honestly is worth more at that moment than a term of report comments. AI SL is not the soft option it is sometimes taken for, and 36 hours of statistics is where that becomes obvious.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE to AI SL bridge

IGCSE Extended mathematics rewards executing a procedure the question has already chosen. AI SL rewards choosing the model, running it on real data and explaining the result in the context given. The bridging evidence worth collecting is three or four marked modelling questions done over the summer, which show whether the student can write a conclusion rather than only a number. That is a cheap, specific test of readiness.

UK curricula account for 37 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment, so most AI SL students in the emirate arrive from IGCSE rather than MYP. The bridge is also the moment to settle the AA or AI question properly, because switching course after the first DP1 term costs taught hours nobody gets back. A marked modelling question answers that question better than a conversation about which course is harder.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

AI SL is the subject in the URL. The grid below shows it with the Diploma subjects Dubai families most often support in the same term, with each entry written around the record that subject leaves behind rather than its reputation for difficulty.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

At SL, two ninety-minute papers and the exploration, with technology throughout. The record to ask for is a marked Paper 2 with the unanswered context marks identified, because that is where Standard Level students lose marks they had already earned computationally.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

AA Paper 1 bans the calculator, so the evidence is manual algebra in the student's own hand. Families considering a switch between the two courses should ask to see one marked script from each rather than compare syllabus descriptions.

Physics

HL and SL

The data-analysis section of Paper 1B shares its skills with AI SL statistics: gradients, uncertainties and conclusions written in context. One marked Paper 1B frequently diagnoses a maths problem and a physics problem in the same half hour.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Calculation chains leave very legible evidence. A marked moles-and-concentration question shows whether marks are going on chemistry or on arithmetic discipline, which is worth establishing before paying for hours in either subject.

Biology

HL and SL

Standard deviation, error bars and correlation overlap directly with the AI SL statistics block. The constraint here is marking turnaround rather than teaching time, because extended-response answers have to be read closely to be marked usefully.

Economics

HL and SL

Three internal commentaries plus diagram discipline make this a document-heavy subject with a clear draft history. Dubai students often pair it with AI SL for business and economics degree routes, where data interpretation is the shared skill.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study answers improve visibly once structure is taught, so the week-to-week record is easier to read than in mathematics. A useful second subject when a family wants an early, legible signal that support is working.

Computer Science

HL and SL

The solution component leaves a dated development record of its own. Pseudocode discipline sits close to the structured reasoning AI SL asks for, and clear pseudocode usually accompanies clear mathematical justification.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Data interpretation and systems diagrams generate evidence quickly, and the quantitative questions ask for exactly the contextual writing AI SL rewards. A common pairing for Dubai students wanting a second data-led subject.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, each producing a different volume and type of record. All begin with a free trial lesson, with no card details taken, and all three leave a written note the family keeps.

A single diagnostic hour and a written log

One session spent on an existing script, with the first page of the error log filled in during the hour. The output is a categorised list of the marks lost and an estimate of sessions per category. Families who start here spend less overall, because the first paid hours land on two categories rather than across a 150-hour syllabus.

  • Works from whatever the school has already marked
  • Produces page one of the error log
  • Carries no commitment to a weekly slot

A weekly hour with the log maintained

A fixed Gulf Standard Time slot, work set after each session and returned marked before the next, with each new mistake categorised in the same log. Across a Dubai term this produces roughly a dozen dated scripts and a log that can be read as a trend rather than a list. The trend is the deliverable.

  • One fixed slot held for the term
  • Work marked against the markscheme between sessions
  • Every error categorised into the same running log

Two shorter sessions a week before a mock

Forty-five minutes twice weekly rather than ninety once, used in the four weeks before a school mock. It suits students who lose concentration in long sessions and families whose evenings are already crowded. More frequent contact also means errors get caught while the topic is still live rather than a fortnight later.

  • Twice-weekly contact, shorter sessions
  • Each session closes a specific log entry
  • Timed to the school's own published mock dates

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Two ninety-minute papers, both with a calculator: what each script reveals

AI SL is assessed by Paper 1 and Paper 2, each ninety minutes, each 80 marks, each 40% of the final grade, with technology required in both. The exploration supplies the remaining 20%. There is no Paper 3 at Standard Level, which is the single most useful thing to establish before buying any support, because Higher Level material and Higher Level rates have a habit of attaching themselves to Standard Level students in this market.

Paper 1 is broadly short and structured, moving across the syllabus in smaller questions. Paper 2 runs longer questions that develop over several parts. Marked properly, they tell you different things. Paper 1 shows coverage: which of the five topic blocks are reliable and which collapse. Paper 2 shows stamina and interpretation: whether the student can carry a context through four parts and still answer the question that was asked at the end rather than the calculation they performed in the middle.

Because technology is allowed throughout, the arithmetic is rarely the fault. That makes AI SL unusually diagnosable. A wrong answer with clear working and a correct method points at the calculator, the mode it was in, or the data column selected. A right answer with no interpreting sentence points at the habit of stopping too early. A wrong model at the start of a long question points at topic knowledge. Three different problems, three different remedies, all visible on the page.

The table below is what we ask for when a family first makes contact, and it is also what a tutor should be able to produce from any script within twenty minutes. If a provider cannot tell you which component a mark came from and what the loss category was, they are not reading the paper; they are reading the total at the top of it.

Where AI SL marks leak, and how the leak shows up in writing

  • Context marks lost to a missing interpreting sentence
  • Model choice errors that invalidate every later step
  • Premature rounding costing accuracy marks on correct work
  • Calculator mode and list-management errors, usually fixable in one session
  • Question misreads: answering the calculation rather than the question

The commonest AI SL loss is a mark the student had already earned and then did not collect. They run the regression correctly, state the coefficient, and never write the sentence saying what it means for the shop, the population or the temperature in the question. The calculation is worth the method mark; the sentence is worth the context mark; and across a full paper, those uncollected sentences can add up to a double-figure total. Nothing about fixing it requires new mathematics.

The second leak is model choice. Given a scatter of data, a Standard Level student has to decide whether a linear fit is defensible, whether an exponential model suits the growth described, or whether the data should be treated as discrete. Choosing wrongly costs the marks that follow, because every subsequent calculation is executed on the wrong object. In the error log this appears as a cluster of entries in the functions and statistics blocks, which between them carry 67 of the 150 guide hours.

The third is rounding. Technology encourages a student to carry a displayed value forward, round to two decimal places midway, and then produce a final answer that misses the accuracy mark by a unit. The rule to train is simple and unglamorous: carry full precision through the working and round only at the end, to three significant figures unless the question specifies otherwise. That is a habit, not a concept, and habits respond to repetition rather than explanation.

The fourth is the calculator itself: degree and radian modes confused, a statistics list left populated from the previous question, a graph window that hides the root being asked for. These are the fastest losses to eliminate and the ones most likely to be dismissed as carelessness. They are not carelessness; they are an unpractised routine, and a tutor who watches the student operate their own model of calculator on a shared screen will see it in one session.

03

The topic error log, and how a parent reads one

An error log is one page per month with five columns: date, topic, question reference, error category and whether the category has recurred. It takes a tutor three minutes per session to maintain and it changes the conversation at review from impressions to counts. A category with six entries in September and one in November is the clearest statement of progress available in this subject, and it exists weeks before any school report reflects it.

The five AI SL blocks are unevenly weighted in the guide, and the log usually reflects that. Statistics and probability takes 36 hours, functions 31, calculus 19, geometry and trigonometry 18 and number and algebra 16, with 30 further hours for the toolkit and the exploration. A log dominated by statistics entries is normal rather than alarming. A log dominated by number and algebra entries suggests the problem predates the Diploma and the remedy is different and usually shorter.

Reading the log is a matter of counting categories rather than reading comments. If the top category is interpretation, the next sessions should be short, frequent and almost entirely about writing sentences. If it is model choice, they should be longer and built around data sets. If it is rounding and calculator handling, two sessions and a checking routine should close most of it, and a provider recommending a full term for that is overselling.

The log is also what makes a change of tutor survivable. Inside the network the log moves with the student, so a new tutor starts from thirty categorised entries rather than from a conversation. Families leaving entirely can take the log with them; it is their record, not a retention device, and we send it on request along with the marked scripts.

04

From MYP or IGCSE into AI SL: the gap, measured rather than described

Every Dubai family arriving at AI SL has a different gap to close, and the useful version of that statement is a table rather than a paragraph. A student from IGCSE Extended has procedural fluency and no practice at choosing a model. A student from MYP has criterion-based feedback and no experience of a timed ninety-minute paper. A student from a CBSE background usually has strong algebra and little exposure to writing conclusions in context. The remedies differ in content and in length.

Measuring the gap takes one session and one unseen question. Give the student data, a context and no instruction about method, and watch what happens. Do they sketch? Do they choose a model and say why? Do they answer the question asked? The answers place them precisely, and they also produce the first entries in the error log. That single hour is worth more than any readiness description a school or a provider can offer.

The transition that catches most Dubai families is the one nobody names: a student who was comfortable in Year 11 maths and has arrived in AI SL expecting the same subject with a new label. AI SL asks for interpretation in a way IGCSE rarely does, and the first reported DP1 grade in November is often the first time anyone notices. Two or three weeks of targeted work at that point is a far smaller intervention than the one required in DP2.

The right-hand column gives honest ranges rather than a single number, because the variable is the student rather than the curriculum they came from. Where a gap is wider than the table suggests, we say so at the trial, and where a student plainly needs no support at all we say that too. Telling a family they do not need to buy anything is the cheapest way to be trusted later.

The exploration at Standard Level, and what counts as proof of authorship

The AI SL exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics, with six of those twenty marks on the last. It is worth 20% of the grade, the same as half a paper, and the IB recommends roughly twelve to twenty pages. Length is not rewarded. What is rewarded is a question worth asking, mathematics at the right level, and reflection that evaluates rather than recaps.

The authorship evidence is a dated version history. A first version carrying the research question and the data source. A second with the mathematics attempted and the gaps still visible. A third responding to questions rather than absorbing supplied text. Dubai schools run their own internal deadlines and their own authenticity conversations, and a student who can walk a coordinator through three dated versions is in a very different position from one who produces a single polished file.

The order matters more at Standard Level than families expect. A student who finds a data set first and then invents a question to fit it almost always scores poorly on personal engagement and reflection, because neither is genuine. A student who writes the question first and then goes looking for data has a document with a spine. One session spent on that sequence, before any mathematics is attempted, is the highest-value hour in the whole exploration process.

The boundary on paid support is the same wherever it appears on this site. A tutor may teach a technique on a separate example, ask what a symbol means, say where a reader loses the thread, and ask what would change the conclusion. The student makes every decision and types every word of the submitted file. Providers in this market sell completed documents for thousands of dirhams; under IB rules the consequence of that falls on the candidate, and it can end a diploma.

06

Ministry of Education equivalency: the paperwork these grades eventually feed

AI SL marks end up in a transcript, and that transcript eventually meets the UAE Ministry of Education equivalency process if your child applies to a UAE university or needs their certificate attested. Almost nobody in this search mentions it. The British-track requirements have been published: five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

Two details in that are worth holding onto. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count, which corrects a figure one ranking competitor publishes. And for the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, with mathematics requiring at least 450 in SAT Math before applying.

For the IB specifically we publish no points threshold, because we have not read one on the Ministry's own site and an unsourced number here would be repeated across thousands of pages. Verify the IB requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in your emirate before planning around it. Equivalency is also not something a tutoring service performs, guarantees or accelerates; it is a government process with its own channel, and anyone implying otherwise is misrepresenting it.

The practical link back to AI SL is modest and real. Mathematics appears in every one of these routes, so a student with a secure Standard Level mathematics grade has fewer complications in the paperwork than one who has had to resit. That is a reason to take the subject seriously, not a reason to buy tutoring. Tutoring is not required for equivalency, for university admission or for school progression, and any page suggesting it is has invented an urgency that does not exist.

Online one-to-one in Dubai, and the record a session leaves behind

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video, on a shared screen where tutor and student write on the same page, timed to Gulf Standard Time and fitted around a Dubai school day. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai. Those are a service we run only in India, and no sentence on this site should suggest otherwise to a family in this emirate.

The argument here is specifically about the record. Work exchanged as files exists in two places and can be read by a parent travelling or living elsewhere. A shared screen leaves the session's working behind rather than inside an exercise book. The error log is a document rather than a memory. None of that is available from an arrangement where feedback is given verbally at the door and the only artefact is whatever the student wrote down at the time.

There is a supply argument too. The International Baccalaureate accounts for 7 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment, against 37 per cent for UK curricula, so AI SL specialists are sparse in any single community. Making proximity a requirement narrows the choice to whoever is nearby and free, which in practice often means a general maths tutor rather than someone who has marked Standard Level scripts against a markscheme and knows where the context marks hide.

The honest limit is that a student who will not engage with a video lesson is not served by one. That is exactly what the free trial exists to test, and we would rather find out in the trial than in week five. Where the answer is no, we say so instead of selling a term and hoping the habit forms.

08

The six-week review, and three things we will not claim at it

  • Three legitimate review outcomes: continue, retarget, or stop
  • No predicted-grade claims from a tutor who marks part of one subject
  • No published statistics about our own results, because the method cannot be shown
  • No fixed timescale quoted for an unseen student
  • Your school's free support clinic named where it covers the same ground

Six weeks in, the review happens with the scripts and the log in front of both of us. It produces one of three decisions: continue with the same target, change the target because the log has moved, or stop because the categories have closed. Stopping is a real outcome and we will recommend it when the evidence supports it. The default in this market is a renewal nobody discussed, which is how families end up two years into an arrangement they cannot evaluate.

The first thing we will not say is that your child is on track for a particular grade. The grade comes from weighted components compared against boundaries set for that session, and a tutor who marks part of one subject cannot know how the rest will score. The second is any statistic about our own results. No satisfaction percentage, no proportion of students improved, no median tutor score, because we cannot show you the sample, the date or the method, and a figure without those is decoration.

The third is a claim about speed. Some error categories close in two sessions, particularly calculator handling and rounding. Others, model choice in particular, take a term because the student has to meet enough different data sets to build judgement. Any provider offering a fixed timescale for an unseen student is quoting a sales figure. The log is what replaces the promise: it either shortens or it does not, and you can see which within a month.

What we do commit to is narrow and checkable. A fixed weekly slot, work marked against the markscheme between sessions, every error categorised in the same log, a dated note after each session, and a review at six weeks where ending the arrangement is one of the three legitimate answers. If your school's own maths clinic covers what a session would cover, we will tell you that as well, because it is free and we are not.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

AI SL cohorts are spread across the emirate, and the practical variable by community is not price but whether the weekly slot survives the term. A slot that survives produces a full set of scripts; one that gets cancelled twice a month produces an argument instead of a record.

Jumeirah Village Circle

A large, young family population with school destinations in several directions. Slots here hold better in the late afternoon than the early evening, because the second school run is what usually collides with a 6pm start.

Al Barsha

Dense school provision within walking or short driving distance, so students arrive home early and a 4.30pm slot is realistic. That is the slot where a full ninety-minute timed paper fits inside one sitting.

Business Bay

Apartment living with longer school commutes in both directions. Families here often choose two shorter sessions a week rather than one long one, which produces more frequent but smaller pieces of evidence.

Arabian Ranches

Villa communities feeding an established school corridor, with a reliably early finish. Household bookings for two siblings are common, and a shared slot still produces separate error logs for each child.

Dubai Festival City

Good access to the eastern school cluster and a shorter evening commute than the western corridor. Mock timetables here are well established, so the term can be planned against real dates from week one.

Town Square and Dubai South

Newer communities where school provision is still growing and families often travel further. Online delivery is what makes a fixed weekly slot practical, and the distance is the reason the slot would otherwise fail.

Al Warqa

An established eastern district with a mixed curriculum intake and a strong group-tuition presence. The question that comes up most here is whether a centre class produces any individual record at all, and usually it does not.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Southern and central Dubai

IB continuum and Diploma schools from Nad Al Sheba and Meydan out towards Dubailand and the Sustainable City. Internal exploration deadlines in this cluster are often earlier than families expect, so the version history gets planned from the school calendar rather than the exam session.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a script and the school's calendar

A photograph of a marked AI SL paper and the school's published mock and coursework dates are enough to brief a tutor properly. The script shows the error categories; the calendar shows when the next real data point arrives. Together they fix what the first month should target.

  2. 02

    Take the free trial lesson

One lesson, free, no card details taken, no obligation afterwards. Your child works with the tutor we actually propose, and the session produces page one of the error log, which you keep whether or not you continue. If the match is wrong, we change it or say we cannot.

  3. 03

Fix the slot before the term fills

The 4pm to 6pm window is the one that survives a Dubai school week, and it fills in the first fortnight of term. Booking it early is the difference between a dozen marked scripts in a term and seven, and the number of scripts is what makes the review meaningful.

  4. 04

    Maintain the log every week

Work set after each session, returned marked before the next, and every error categorised in the same running log. It takes three minutes per session to keep and it is the document that turns a term of lessons into something you can actually evaluate.

  5. 05

Decide at six weeks with the log on the table

Continue, change the target, or stop. We bring the scripts and the counts; you make the call. A category that has gone from six entries to one is the clearest progress signal this subject produces, and it arrives well before a school report says anything.

Date, topic, question, category, recurrence. Five columns, one page a month, three minutes a session. It converts a term of impressions into counts, and counts are the only thing a parent can genuinely check at a review.

Standard Level priced and planned as Standard Level

AI SL is 150 hours and two papers. There is no Paper 3 at this level. We write the level into the plan so nobody ends up preparing for a component their child will not sit, which is a common and expensive drift in this market.

Context marks treated as the main event

The most frequent AI SL loss is a sentence never written about a calculation already done correctly. Sessions drill the interpreting sentence until it is automatic, because it is the cheapest mark on the paper and the one most often left behind.

Marking inside the fee, not beside it

Written work comes back scored against the markscheme with no separate charge. A tutor billing for marking time has a quiet reason to set very little, and the marked script is the only shared evidence either of us has about whether the hours are working.

The log and the scripts are yours

Ask and we send them; ask for deletion and the file goes, with copies offered first, under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021. Student work is not a retention tool, and treating it as one is the wrong way round.

A stated line on the exploration

We question the research question, teach technique on separate examples and read drafts against the criterion letters. Every decision and every word in the submitted file is the student's. Finished documents are sold in this market, and the candidate carries the risk.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does week-one evidence look like for an AI SL student?+

A written diagnosis built on work the school has already marked, and the first page of the error log. The log entries name the topic, the question and the category of each mistake: model choice, missing interpretation, premature rounding, calculator handling or a misread question. No marks will have moved after one session, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling you something. What should exist is a categorised list specific enough that you can see what the next five sessions will target and why.

Which AI SL topics leak the most marks in a Dubai cohort?+

Statistics and probability first, which is unsurprising since it takes 36 of the 150 guide hours, followed by functions at 31. The losses in both are rarely computational, because technology is permitted in every AI SL paper. They come from choosing a model the data does not support and from quoting a result without saying what it means in the situation described. Number and algebra entries appear less often, and when they dominate a log the underlying problem usually predates the Diploma.

How do we check that an AI SL tutor is marking to the current syllabus?+

Ask three questions. How many marks is each AI SL paper worth, and what is each one's weighting? Is there a Paper 3 at Standard Level? How many marks is the exploration and across how many criteria? The answers are 80 marks and 40% each, no, and 20 marks across five criteria. A tutor who hesitates on any of those is working from the course they learned rather than the one your child is sitting, and the marking will reflect that.

My child uses the calculator for everything. Is that an AI SL problem?+

Not in itself, since technology is allowed in both AI SL papers and using it well is part of the course. It becomes a problem in two specific ways. First, a student who never sketches or estimates cannot tell when the machine has given them something absurd. Second, mode errors, stale statistics lists and badly chosen graph windows produce confident wrong answers. Both show up quickly when a tutor watches the student operate their own calculator model on a shared screen, and both are usually fixed inside two sessions.

What is the difference in evidence between AI SL and AA SL work?+

AA Paper 1 bans technology, so its evidence is manual algebra, exact values and differentiation done by hand, and the losses cluster around technique. AI allows technology throughout, so its evidence is model choice and interpretation, and the losses cluster around unwritten sentences and unjustified models. A family deciding between the two courses learns more from one marked script in each than from any syllabus comparison, because the two scripts fail in visibly different places.

How long does it take to see AI SL coursework improve?+

The exploration improves in steps rather than steadily, and the steps are tied to specific sessions. One session on the research question usually produces a visible structural change in the next version. One on criterion B notation cleans up a document quickly. Reflection, which carries three marks, is the slowest to shift because it depends on the student having something genuine to say about their own results. Expect a different document after each dated version rather than gradual weekly progress.

What does the six-week AI SL review meeting cover?+

The scripts, the log and one decision. We count how often each error category appeared in the first fortnight against the last, name what is closed and what is not, and then choose between continuing with the same target, changing the target, or stopping because the categories have resolved. Stopping is a legitimate outcome and we will recommend it when the counts support it. What the review will not produce is a predicted grade, because a tutor marking part of one subject cannot know how the rest will score.

Can an AI SL tutor help my child read their own markscheme?+

That is one of the more valuable things a session does. Students routinely look at a marked paper, see the total, and learn nothing from it. Teaching them to read why a method mark was awarded on a wrong answer, or why an accuracy mark was lost on a correct one, turns every future returned paper into free feedback. We do not redistribute IB markschemes or past papers, since that is the IB's material; we work from your child's own script and the marking on it.

How do we track AI SL progress between school reports in Dubai?+

With the log and the dated scripts, because Dubai school reports arrive two or three times a year and compress everything into a grade. Between reports, the countable things are how many entries each error category collected this month against last, and whether a previously unreliable topic block produced a clean script. Those move weeks before a report does. Ask for the counts rather than a summary, and ask for them at a fixed point in the term rather than when you happen to think of it.

What does a context sentence have to do with AI SL marks?+

It is often the mark itself. A question gives data about rainfall, sales or population; the student runs the correct calculation and writes down a number. The markscheme awards the method and the accuracy, then awards a further mark for stating what the number means for the rainfall, the sales or the population. Students who never write that sentence lose a steady trickle of marks across both papers while answering every question correctly. It is the cheapest repair available in this course.

My child moved from MYP maths into AI SL. What should we watch?+

Timed paper technique, which MYP does not train, and sustained accuracy across ninety minutes. MYP assessment is criterion-based and often untimed, so a student can have excellent investigation habits and no experience of working at pace with marks at stake. Watch the first timed mock closely: if coverage is fine but the last third of the paper is thin, the issue is pace rather than knowledge, and that is three to five weeks of targeted work rather than a term of teaching.

Does rounding really cost AI SL marks on Paper 2?+

Consistently. The pattern is a student who rounds a displayed value to two decimal places midway through a multi-step question, carries it forward, and produces a final answer that misses the accuracy mark. The method marks survive; the accuracy marks do not. The fix is a rule rather than a concept: carry full precision through the working and round only at the end, to three significant figures unless the question specifies otherwise. Two sessions and a checking routine usually close this category for good.

What proof should we ask for before switching AI SL tutors?+

The log and the scripts. A tutor who has been working properly can hand over a categorised list of thirty or so errors and a folder of dated marked papers, and a new tutor starts from that rather than from a conversation. If neither exists after a term, that is itself the answer about whether the arrangement was producing anything. Inside our network the log moves with the student; if you are leaving entirely, ask for it and the marked work, and it is sent.

Is an AI SL mock result a reliable predictor of anything?+

It is the most useful single data point a Dubai school generates, and it is still only one. A mock tells you how the student performs on a full-length timed paper against their own cohort, which no class test does. What it cannot tell you is where the grade will land, because mock papers vary in difficulty between schools and grade boundaries are set per session. Treat it as the best available diagnostic and the worst available prophecy, and mark it carefully rather than reading the percentage.

How many AI SL past papers should my child have marked by February?+

Enough to produce a pattern rather than a score, which in practice means at least four full-length timed attempts with the errors categorised, and ideally more across both papers. Quantity without marking is wasted effort: a student who has worked through ten papers unchecked has practised their mistakes ten times. Two papers marked properly and reviewed beat six papers completed and filed. Your school may provide the papers; we work from the attempt and the marking rather than redistributing board material.

Ask for the log, not the percentage

Send a recent AI SL script, the school and the year group, and we will propose a specialist and a free trial lesson with no card details taken. That first session produces page one of the error log, which you keep whether or not you book anything further. From there it is a fixed weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time, work marked against the markscheme between sessions, every mistake categorised in the same log, and a review at six weeks where continuing, retargeting and stopping are all real answers. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, fitted around a Dubai school day.
