IB DP Spanish B Tutor in Dubai

The price of an IB DP Spanish B tutor in Dubai is decided less by the tutor than by one question your child answered in DP1: Standard Level or Higher Level. HL carries two literary works, longer written tasks and an oral built from a literary extract, and each of those lengthens the hours you pay for. This page prices Spanish B by the kind of hour you are buying, in AED, and teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • SL and HL priced separately, because they are not the same subject to teach
  • Written tasks returned annotated against the language, message and conceptual criteria
  • Live one-to-one video lessons scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, no group classes
  • Market AED bands on this page carry their source and the month they were read

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Why two Spanish B students in the same Dubai school get quoted different amounts

Two students at the same Dubai IB school, both taking Spanish B, both with a B grade in MYP, can be quoted monthly figures that differ by AED 900. Nothing about the tutor explains it. One takes Standard Level and one takes Higher Level, and Higher Level is a materially bigger piece of teaching: two works of literature to study and discuss, a Paper 1 task of 450 to 600 words against 250 to 400 at SL, a longer listening paper, and an individual oral built from a literary extract rather than from a photograph. Every one of those costs hours.

Start with the market. In Dubai, a qualified language teacher working online one-to-one is quoted around AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, and an IB-experienced language acquisition specialist AED 200 to AED 450 and above. Budget online platforms advertise from AED 45 to AED 150. A premium tier quotes AED 500 to AED 650. Those bands come from published provider rate cards and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, read in October 2026, and they are the market rather than an IB Gram price list.

Within those bands, what you are actually buying varies more than the hourly number suggests. A conversation hour, a grammar-repair hour, a Paper 1 text-type hour, an oral rehearsal and an HL literature seminar are five different pieces of work, and only two of them can be done well by a fluent Spanish speaker who has never seen the assessment criteria. Dubai has plenty of fluent Spanish speakers. It has far fewer teachers who can tell you that a task lost marks on the conceptual understanding criterion because the register was wrong for the stated audience.

Geography is the one cost that online delivery removes completely. An in-home visit in this city runs AED 180 to AED 500 an hour because forty to ninety minutes of driving sits inside the fee, and the tutor you can reach is whoever is willing to make that drive. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Spanish B for Dubai families is taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which means the match is made on Spanish B experience rather than on postcode.

What follows is the SL and HL comparison in full, a price breakdown by type of hour rather than by tutor, the literature cost at Higher Level, the two components where Dubai students lose most marks, a term-by-term spending plan, and the questions worth asking before you pay anybody. Every figure is attributed, because a number without a source is no help to a family deciding between one session a week and two.

At a glance

  • Spanish B runs at SL and HL; HL adds two literary works and a longer Paper 1
  • Paper 1 is 25 per cent, Paper 2 listening and reading 50 per cent, individual oral 25 per cent
  • Dubai market rates: AED 150-300 qualified online, AED 200-450+ for an IB specialist
  • HL literature work is the cost families are least often warned about
  • Taught live online on Gulf Standard Time; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Spanish B is a two-year course with a long run-up. The notes below describe where each programme hands a student over to the next, because the handover point is what decides whether DP1 is maintenance or rescue.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Spanish B sits in Group 2 and runs at both levels. Students work across five prescribed themes, write one extended task under timed conditions, sit separate listening and reading papers, and complete an internally conducted individual oral. Higher Level adds two literary works, which also become the basis of the HL oral.

Dubai schools often run a single combined SL and HL Spanish B class because cohort sizes do not justify splitting them. The HL students in that room get less literature time than the course assumes, and that gap is the most common reason a Dubai family looks for an IB DP Spanish B tutor in the first place.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Spanish runs in phases. A student finishing Year 11 in Phase 3 or 4 has the grammar base Spanish B HL assumes; a student finishing in Phase 2 has the vocabulary but not the range, and will meet the Paper 1 word count as a wall rather than a target.

Because families move between Dubai schools mid-MYP, phases do not always transfer cleanly: one school's Phase 3 is another's Phase 2. A diagnostic in the first weeks of DP1 is worth more than the transcript, and it is the cheapest way to decide between SL and HL before the choice hardens.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP students meet Spanish through the language development core requirement rather than as an examined Group 2 subject. The work is portfolio-based: evidence of language development recorded over time, with no Paper 1 and no individual oral to prepare.

Few Dubai schools offer the CP, so families often reach the language development requirement with no clear sense of what counts as evidence. Support here is short, structured and much cheaper than a two-year Diploma language engagement, and it ends when the portfolio is credible.

MYP to DP bridgeAges 15-16 · The gap between programmes

The Year 11 summer

The ten weeks between MYP and DP1 are the cheapest hours in the whole course. A short block covering past tenses, the subjunctive in its most common triggers, and reading at length closes most of the gap between Phase 2 and what HL expects from week one.

Dubai families travel heavily over the summer, so this block usually runs across time zones. Online delivery is what makes it possible at all, and six sessions in August routinely save a term of remedial work in a market where term-time specialist hours cost more.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Spanish B is rarely the only thing on the list. The grid below covers the language acquisition courses we teach, written around where each one actually leaks marks rather than as a catalogue.

Spanish B

SL and HL

Marks leak in two places: Paper 1 register, where a student writes good Spanish in the wrong voice for the stated audience, and the listening paper, where training on one variety of Spanish leaves a student stranded on another. HL adds literature, where the risk is summarising the work instead of discussing it.

Spanish ab initio

SL only

For genuine beginners, SL only, with two short written tasks instead of one long one and no literature. A student who should be in ab initio but sits in Spanish B will meet the Paper 1 word count as an impossible target rather than a stretch, and no amount of vocabulary work fixes that in one year.

French B

SL and HL

The same assessment architecture as Spanish B, a harder listening paper for most learners because of liaison and elision, and a smaller teaching pool in Dubai. Families taking both languages usually need the two sets of sessions sequenced across the week rather than stacked on the same evening.

German B

SL and HL

Written accuracy is the pressure point: case endings and verb-final word order in subordinate clauses produce errors that read as carelessness but are structural. Diagnosing which case a student is guessing at is more useful than another round of vocabulary lists.

Italian B

SL and HL

Thin availability in Dubai and often taught in a combined SL and HL group of a handful of students. Families here typically want literature support at HL specifically, because that is the part a small combined class cannot cover properly.

Mandarin B

SL and HL

Character load means reading speed, not grammar, is the usual constraint on the reading paper. Students who can speak comfortably still run out of time on Paper 2, and the fix is timed reading volume rather than more conversation.

Arabic B

SL and HL

Doubly relevant in Dubai, where KHDA requires Arabic in every private school regardless of the licensed curriculum. A student taking Arabic B in the Diploma is often also carrying the school's mandatory Arabic stream, and the two have different expectations.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Not a Group 2 subject, but it competes directly with Spanish B for the same DP2 weeks because both carry an internally assessed oral. Families booking support for both should fix the order of the two oral windows before booking either.

Spanish B HL literature support

HL only

A distinct piece of work rather than more Spanish: close reading of the two works the school chose, discussion vocabulary, and the ability to speak about a short extract for three to four minutes without reciting plot. This is where the HL premium in a quote actually goes.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Spanish B hours come in three shapes, and the mix should change between DP1 and DP2. All IB Gram teaching is live and online; the point of separating them is that they cost different amounts and do different work.

Weekly one-to-one teaching

A fixed sixty or ninety-minute slot each week, held from September of DP1. In the first year this is theme vocabulary, tense range and reading volume; in the second it becomes paper practice. The fixed slot is the product: a term that delivers twelve sessions instead of six costs half as much per session actually taught.

  • One slot a week on Gulf Standard Time, agreed in writing
  • Ninety-minute blocks typically priced AED 10-40 an hour below hourly rates
  • Written tasks set between sessions and marked outside the hour
  • Indicative AED 600-1,200 a month at mid-market rates for one hour a week

HL literature block

A separate short engagement on the two works your child's school has chosen, usually six to ten sessions across DP2. The work is close reading, discussion vocabulary and the ability to speak about a chosen extract for three to four minutes. This is the Higher Level cost most quotes leave out, and it is the one that moves the HL oral.

  • Built around the school's actual chosen works, not a generic reading list
  • Extract-based speaking practice, recorded for review
  • Discussion vocabulary rather than plot summary
  • Booked as a block so the cost is visible rather than absorbed into the hourly rate

Listening and reading sprints

Short, frequent, timed practice on the two halves of Paper 2, which together carry half the grade. Thirty-minute sprints twice a week beat a single long session, because the skill being built is processing speed. These are the cheapest useful hours in the course and the easiest to run between other commitments.

  • Recordings drawn from more than one variety of Spanish
  • Timed reading to build speed, not just comprehension
  • Error log kept across sessions so the pattern is visible
  • Useful from DP1 January right through to the May session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Standard Level or Higher Level: the decision that sets your bill

Spanish B HL costs more to tutor than Spanish B SL, consistently and for reasons that have nothing to do with tutor greed. HL requires two literary works that SL does not. Its Paper 1 task is 450 to 600 words against 250 to 400. Its listening paper is longer. Its individual oral starts from a literary extract instead of a photograph, which means the student must be able to talk about a text rather than describe an image.

The table sets the two levels side by side with the final column showing what each difference does to tutoring hours, because that is the column families actually need. Read it before DP1 subject choices lock rather than after. A student who takes HL for university reasons and then discovers the literature requirement in March of DP2 is buying the most expensive hours in this market at the worst possible moment.

There is a university dimension that cuts the other way. Some degree routes ask for a language at Higher Level, and a Spanish B HL grade does work that an SL grade cannot. If that applies to your child, the extra hours are not optional spending; they are part of the cost of the application. What is worth avoiding is taking HL on reputation alone, with no admissions requirement behind it, and then paying for literature support to defend a grade nobody asked for.

Confirm the current word ranges, paper durations and literature requirements with your child's IB coordinator. The IB revises its subject guides, and what matters is the document your child's teacher is working from this year, not a figure on a tutoring page.

02

What Spanish B hours cost in Dubai, by the kind of hour

An hourly rate tells you almost nothing on its own, because a Spanish B engagement is five different jobs. Conversation practice is the cheapest to supply and the easiest to find in a city with a large Spanish-speaking population. Criterion-referenced marking of a Paper 1 task is the scarcest, and HL literature discussion is scarcer again. The table below prices by job rather than by tutor, using the same market bands read in October 2026.

The practical consequence is that a family can buy a cheaper blend rather than a cheaper tutor. Pay specialist rates for the two or three hours a month that genuinely need a specialist, and fill the remaining practice with lower-cost conversation or self-marked listening sprints. That blend lands most Dubai families in the AED 600 to AED 1,200 monthly band that Bestimate's 2026 estimates give for mid-market weekly tutoring, while still getting expert marking where it counts.

The opposite mistake is common and expensive: paying specialist rates for conversation. A student who has six hours a month of pleasant Spanish conversation with a native speaker and no marked written work will arrive at Paper 1 fluent and unprepared, having spent AED 1,500 to find out. Conversation matters, but it is not the component that is failing.

Monthly packages deserve the same scrutiny. Online packages advertised near AED 799 a month for eight sessions work out around AED 100 an hour, which only holds if the sessions are full hours and written work is marked outside them. In-home monthly packages at AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour sessions sit nearer AED 200 an hour with travel absorbed. Ask what is inside the number before comparing it with anything.

The two literary works: the Higher Level cost nobody quotes

  • Two works are required at HL and none at SL; the HL oral starts from an extract
  • Ask which two works the school chose before agreeing any HL rate
  • Budget six to ten sessions, separate from weekly teaching
  • Reading first, discussion second: this block cannot be compressed into March

Higher Level Spanish B requires the study of two literary works, and the HL individual oral is built on an extract from one of them. That single sentence in the subject guide is responsible for most of the gap between an SL and an HL tutoring bill, and it is almost never mentioned when a family asks for a quote.

The work it generates is real. A student has to read two full works in Spanish, which for many Dubai HL candidates is the first extended reading they have done in the language. They then need a vocabulary for talking about a text rather than about their life: what a character does, what the writer does, how a passage sits in the whole. Then they need to speak about a short extract for three to four minutes without reciting plot, and answer questions about the work and about broader themes afterwards.

Schools choose their own works, so generic support is close to useless here. A tutor working from a different novel than the one your child's class read is teaching a different course. The first question to ask a prospective Spanish B HL tutor is which two works the school has chosen and whether the tutor has read them; if the answer is vague, the HL premium in their rate is not buying what you think.

Sequencing matters as much as cost. The literature block cannot be bolted on in the final month, because the reading has to happen before the discussion can. Dubai families who book literature support in the DP1 summer or in the first term of DP2 pay the ordinary rate and get a choice of tutors. Those who book in the spring are buying in the same scarce window as every oral candidate in the city.

04

Paper 1: good Spanish in the wrong voice still loses marks

Paper 1 asks for one written task chosen from three options, each specifying a text type, an audience and a purpose. Students lose marks there less for grammar than for voice. A blog entry written as a school essay, a formal letter written in the register of a message to a friend, a speech with no audience address: all of those produce accurate Spanish that answers a question nobody asked.

The task is marked on three criteria in the current guide: language, message and conceptual understanding, carrying twelve, twelve and six marks respectively. Check the exact allocations against your child's subject guide, because the point of knowing them is not trivia. It is that a third of the available marks sit outside grammar and vocabulary, in whether the student understood the audience, context and purpose they were given. That is teachable in a way that fluency is not.

A productive session looks like this. The student writes to a real task brief under timed conditions. The tutor marks it against the three criteria, annotates it, and names one pattern rather than thirty errors. The next task targets that pattern. Three cycles of that will move a student further than ten conversation hours, because each cycle produces evidence of what is actually wrong.

The text-type inventory itself is worth building early. Blog, email, article, brochure, speech, interview, diary, report, set of instructions: each carries conventions a marker expects to see. A student who has written each one once in DP1, with feedback, walks into Paper 1 recognising the format rather than inventing it on the day.

05

Paper 2 listening: the component that punishes a single accent

Listening and reading together carry half of Spanish B, and listening is where Dubai students most often underperform relative to their classroom confidence. The reason is narrow exposure. Classroom Spanish is spoken slowly and deliberately by one teacher with one accent, while the recordings draw on the range of varieties in which Spanish is actually spoken. A student trained exclusively on peninsular audio stalls on a River Plate speaker, and vice versa.

The fix is volume and variety rather than cleverness, and it is cheap. Short daily exposure to Spanish from different regions, with the transcript checked afterwards, builds processing speed in weeks. What does not work is a long weekly listening session: the skill being trained is real-time comprehension, and it responds to frequency the way fitness does, not to intensity.

Reading has a different failure mode. Students scan for a word they recognise and build an answer around it, which produces confident wrong answers. Timed reading with a required justification for each answer breaks the habit: if the student has to point to the clause that supports the answer, guessing stops being comfortable. Both halves of Paper 2 benefit from an error log kept across sessions, because the pattern is usually two or three recurring traps rather than general weakness.

There is a Dubai-specific advantage here that families underuse. The city has Spanish speakers from many countries, and a student who hears Spanish from more than one region socially is already doing part of the work. Pointing that out is often more useful than selling more hours, and a tutor who says so is worth keeping.

06

A term-by-term spending plan to the May session

The cost of Spanish B across two years depends far more on shape than on rate. A flat one session a week from September of DP1, rising to two in the DP2 spring, with a separate literature block at HL, costs less in total and produces more than any compressed alternative. The table maps each phase onto an indicative monthly band using Bestimate's 2026 Dubai monthly estimates for weekly one-hour tutoring, scaled by session count.

DP1 is about building something assessable: tense range, reading volume, the text-type inventory, and at HL the first of the two works. It runs at mid-market rates because nothing here is scarce. The DP1 summer is for retention, not teaching, and at HL it is the natural window for the second literary work, because reading can happen in a hotel room in a way that grammar instruction cannot.

DP2 is where the bill rises, and the rise is concentrated in the spring. Two sessions a week from January, one on papers and one on the oral, plus the HL literature block if it has not already run. Mock season pulls every subject into the same evenings, so book Spanish slots before the mock timetable is published rather than after. The oral rehearsal window is the most contested four weeks of the Dubai language year.

One pattern is worth refusing. Families sometimes plan to spend nothing in DP1 and buy an intensive course in DP2. That inverts every cost in the table: more hours, at the scarcity rate, taught by whoever is left, to a student who still has to build a year of vocabulary while sitting mocks. The same total spend placed earlier does more.

Five questions to ask before you pay a Spanish tutor in Dubai, and what we will not do

  • Which level has the tutor actually taught, and which two HL works have they read?
  • Is marking inside or outside the paid hour?
  • Does the AED figure include VAT, in writing?
  • Does the tutor hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit?
  • What specifically will be delivered each month, in artefacts rather than adjectives?

Ask which level the tutor has taught, not which level they can teach. Ask which two literary works your child's school chose and whether the tutor has read them. Ask whether written-task marking happens inside the hour or outside it, because that single answer can change the effective rate by a third. Ask whether the quoted AED figure includes VAT, and get it in writing. And ask about the private tuition work permit, which MoHRE issues free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, so there is no fee for anybody to have saved by skipping it.

Then ask what the tutor will not do. A Spanish B tutor can set tasks, mark them against the published criteria, annotate the student's own writing, record oral rehearsals, and supply model answers clearly labelled as the tutor's own work for study. A tutor cannot write or rewrite anything your child submits as their own, cannot draft an Extended Essay or TOK essay, and has no business near a recorded individual oral. IB academic honesty rules place the consequence on the student, so a provider who offers help with submitted work is handing your family the risk and keeping the fee.

Be equally wary of the numbers. No tutor can promise a grade in Spanish B, and a provider quoting a success percentage should be asked for the sample size, the dates and the method on the same page as the claim. Self-published star ratings in this market have been found contradicting themselves within a single page. What can be promised is specific: a number of marked tasks, a number of recorded rehearsals, and a written note of where the marks are going.

Our own position, stated plainly: IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoE, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge endorsement, runs no premises in the UAE, and does not offer home visits anywhere in the Emirates. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, the first lesson is free with one per student and no card details taken, and the rate is agreed in writing before the second.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Your community changes what an in-home Spanish tutor would charge you and changes nothing at all about a live video lesson. The notes below are about the hour of the day a session can realistically start and survive, because a slot that collapses twice a month is the most expensive slot in Dubai.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Apartment living, short school runs, and parents working nearby. Early evening slots hold well here and sibling pairing is common, because two children often share one desk and one quiet hour between six and eight.

Dubai Hills Estate

Fast-growing and heavily school-served, which means long activity schedules. Spanish sessions here are most often placed on a weekend morning, and weekend mornings with a language specialist are the first slots to disappear in the DP2 spring.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Al Barsha South

A dense mix of curricula and a long school-bus tail, so a student may not sit down until after five. Families here benefit most from ninety-minute blocks once a week rather than two shorter sessions that both start late.

Palm Jumeirah and Al Sufouh

Heavy holiday travel and frequent trips during term time. Continuity is the issue rather than timing, and a tutor who can hold the slot across a time-zone shift is worth more here than one who is cheaper.

Arabian Ranches and The Lakes

Villa communities a long drive from the Sheikh Zayed Road tutor pool, which is precisely why in-home quotes to these addresses carry the heaviest travel loading in the emirate. Online removes the line item and widens the choice of tutor.

Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud

Short commutes and early school finishes make a four o'clock start realistic, which is the cheapest and most reliable slot in the week. Fixing it in September and keeping it is worth more than any discount.

Al Quoz and Dubai Design District

A working-parent corridor where sessions are usually booked after seven. Late slots suit oral rehearsal better than grammar work, because speaking tolerates tiredness and accuracy does not.

Mirdif and Al Warqa'a

A long way from where language tutors cluster, so families here are quoted the top of the in-home band almost automatically. The same money buys a Spanish B specialist online and two extra sessions a month.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai IB Diploma schools students book Spanish B from

Students booking Spanish B support through IB Gram come from across the emirate's Diploma schools. Combined SL and HL classes are common in these cohorts, which is why HL literature is the part most often covered outside school.

  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School, Arabian Ranches
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Uptown International School

Schools where Spanish runs alongside a second second-language

Several Dubai schools offer Spanish beside French, German or Mandarin, and a student may begin one language in MYP and switch at DP. The switch is the point at which SL and HL stop being interchangeable, and where outside advice is worth most.

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Dwight School Dubai

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Say which level, and why

Tell us SL or HL and what is behind the choice: a university requirement, a school recommendation, or momentum from MYP. At HL, tell us the two literary works the school chose. That single detail changes which tutors we look at more than anything else you can tell us.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, one per student

One real lesson at no charge, with no card details taken. The tutor runs a short diagnostic on tense range, reading speed and register, teaches something, and tells you where the marks are currently being lost. You decide afterwards whether to continue.

  3. 03

Agree the blend, not just the rate

We set out in writing how many hours are specialist teaching, how many are marking, whether literature runs as a separate block, and whether sprints are self-run. The blend is what determines the monthly figure, and it is agreed up front rather than drifting upward.

  4. 04

    Teach, mark, record

Weekly sessions on a fixed Gulf Standard Time slot. Written tasks go out between sessions and return annotated against the language, message and conceptual criteria. Oral rehearsals are recorded so the student can watch where a three-minute response thinned out.

  5. 05

    Half-term review in writing

What has been marked, what the recurring error pattern is now, and what changed since the last note. If the pattern has not moved in six weeks, we change the method or the tutor. The note contains no grade prediction, because predicting is the school's job.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

SL and HL priced as different subjects

Because they are. The literature requirement, the longer Paper 1 and the extract-based oral all generate hours, and we say which hours before you commit rather than after. A quote that treats both levels identically has not read the subject guide.

Marking against the three criteria

Written tasks come back annotated against language, message and conceptual understanding, with one named pattern rather than a page of corrections. A third of Paper 1's marks sit outside grammar, and that is where most improvement is available.

Listening practice across varieties

Recordings drawn from more than one variety of Spanish, in short frequent sprints rather than long weekly sessions. Processing speed is a trained skill, and it is the cheapest half of Paper 2 to improve.

Literature on the school's actual works

HL support is built around the two works your child's class read, not a generic reading list. A tutor working from a different novel is teaching a different course, and we ask the question before matching.

A specialist, not the nearest tutor

Online delivery means the match is made on Spanish B experience and level rather than on driving distance. For HL literature in particular, that widens the pool from whoever will drive to Arabian Ranches to whoever has taught the work.

Clear about the limits

No premises in the UAE, no home visits in the Emirates, no regulator endorsement, no grade promises, and no involvement in work your child must submit as their own. Each of those is claimed by somebody competing for this search.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much more does Spanish B HL tutoring cost than SL in Dubai?+

Expect a similar hourly rate and roughly a third more hours across the two years. The hourly figure moves little, because the same teachers cover both levels, but HL generates work SL does not: two literary works to read and discuss, a Paper 1 task of 450 to 600 words rather than 250 to 400, a longer listening paper, and an oral built from a literary extract. In monthly terms, a Dubai family running one weekly session at mid-market rates sits in the AED 600 to AED 1,200 band for SL, and adds a six to ten session literature block at HL.

Which two literary works will my child need for Spanish B HL?+

Whichever two the school chose, and that is the point. The IB requires the study of two literary works at Higher Level and leaves the selection to the school, so there is no universal list. Ask your child's teacher for the titles in the first term of DP1 and give them to any prospective tutor before agreeing a rate. A tutor who has read the school's chosen works can teach the HL oral; one working from a different novel is teaching a different course at the same price.

Why does my child lose marks on Paper 1 when the Spanish is accurate?+

Because accuracy is only one of the three criteria. In the current guide the task is marked on language, message and conceptual understanding, carrying twelve, twelve and six marks, so roughly a third of the total sits in whether the student wrote the right text type for the stated audience and purpose. A blog written as an essay, or a formal letter in the register of a message to a friend, loses on message and conceptual understanding while the Spanish itself scores well. Confirm the allocations against your child's subject guide, then practise the text types one at a time.

Is conversation practice with a native Spanish speaker worth paying for?+

Worth paying a little for, and not worth paying specialist rates for. Conversation builds fluency and confidence, and in Dubai it is widely available from AED 45 to AED 150 an hour at market rates. What it does not produce is evidence: no marked task, no criterion feedback, no record of what is actually costing marks. Families who buy six conversation hours a month and no marking arrive at Paper 1 fluent and unprepared. The useful blend pays specialist rates for two or three hours of marking and criterion work, and keeps conversation cheap.

How do I stop my child failing the Spanish B listening paper?+

Widen the exposure and shorten the sessions. Listening and reading together carry half the grade, and classroom Spanish is spoken more slowly and in one accent, while the recordings use the range of varieties in which Spanish is actually spoken. Short daily listening from different regions, with the transcript checked afterwards, builds processing speed in weeks. A single long weekly listening session does not, because the skill is real-time comprehension and it responds to frequency rather than intensity. Keep an error log so the two or three recurring traps become visible.

Should my child take Spanish B HL if no university course asks for it?+

Probably not. A Higher Level language is required by some language-related degree routes, and where that applies the extra hours are part of the cost of the application rather than optional spending. Where no course asks for it, HL buys prestige and generates a literature requirement, a longer Paper 1 and a harder oral, all of which have to be defended for two years. Students who take HL on reputation alone and discover the literature requirement in the spring of DP2 end up buying the most expensive hours in this market at the worst moment.

Can a student move from Spanish B HL to SL partway through the Diploma?+

It is a school decision rather than a tutoring one, and timing decides whether it is sensible. A move in the first term of DP1 costs a few weeks of adjustment and usually nothing else. A move in DP2 means abandoning literature work already done and re-pitching the oral from an extract to a photograph, which is survivable but wasteful. Ask the school early if the level looks wrong, and ask a tutor for an honest diagnostic rather than a recommendation to buy more hours at the level your child is struggling with.

How many sessions a week does Spanish B actually need in DP2?+

Two from January to the May session suits most students: one on papers, one on the oral. Before that, one a week through DP1 and the first term of DP2 is enough if it is genuinely weekly. At Higher Level, add a block of six to ten literature sessions, ideally run in the DP1 summer or the first term of DP2 rather than in the spring. Compressing the whole engagement into the final term inverts the cost, because you buy more hours at the scarcity rate from whoever is still free.

Do Spanish tutors in Dubai charge extra for exam-term bookings?+

Yes, and languages more than most subjects, because internally conducted orals are recorded in narrow school windows that cluster across the emirate. Late bookings into that window are commonly quoted AED 20 to AED 60 an hour above the ordinary rate, and the best-matched specialists are often simply unavailable rather than more expensive. Mock season produces a smaller second spike. Booking oral rehearsal in the autumn gets the ordinary rate and a choice of tutors; booking in March gets the scarcity rate and whoever is left.

What is the difference between Spanish B and Spanish ab initio for a Dubai student?+

Ab initio is for genuine beginners, runs at Standard Level only, sets two short written tasks instead of one long one, and carries no literature at any level. Spanish B assumes three or more years of prior Spanish and is available at SL and HL. The placement matters financially: a student who belongs in ab initio but sits in Spanish B meets the Paper 1 word count as an impossible target, and a year of vocabulary work will not close that gap. A diagnostic hour covering speech, reading aloud and a short written piece settles the question.

Is a ninety-minute Spanish session better value than two shorter ones?+

For grammar and written work, usually yes. A language session carries fixed overheads, because settling in and warming up into Spanish take the same ten to fifteen minutes regardless of length, so a ninety-minute block spends more of your money on teaching and is typically priced AED 10 to AED 40 an hour below the hourly rate. The exception is listening and reading practice, where two or three short sprints a week beat one long block, because processing speed responds to frequency. Many Dubai families run one long teaching session plus self-managed sprints.

Can my child get Spanish B support during Dubai school holidays?+

Yes, and the DP1 summer is the single most useful holiday block in the course, particularly at Higher Level where it is the natural window for reading the second literary work. Online delivery means sessions follow a family that travels, and lessons can be rescheduled around a time-zone shift rather than cancelled. During Ramadan, sessions commonly move to post-Iftar slots or to late mornings at weekends. Holiday retention work is cheap; losing ten weeks of Spanish and re-teaching it in September is not.

Does IB Gram send a Spanish tutor to our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we provide only in India. Spanish B for Dubai families is taught one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. The market alternative is priced on this page for comparison, at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with forty to ninety minutes of driving inside the fee. The practical gain from teaching online is which tutor you can reach: for HL literature on a specific pair of works, that pool is far larger than the set of tutors willing to drive to your community.

What should a monthly Spanish B progress note contain?+

Artefacts rather than adjectives. Which tasks were set and marked, what the criteria said about each, which single error pattern was targeted, whether it moved, and what the next three weeks will cover. At Higher Level it should also say how much of each literary work has been read and whether the student can yet speak about an extract for three to four minutes. What it should not contain is a predicted grade, because predictions are the school's responsibility, or a percentage improvement figure with no sample size or method behind it.

Fix the level question first, then the budget

Almost every Spanish B cost question in Dubai turns out to be a level question wearing a price tag. Standard Level and Higher Level are different amounts of teaching, and the two literary works at HL are the part most quotes quietly leave out. Book the free trial lesson, one per student with no card details taken, and the tutor will run a diagnostic on tense range, register and reading speed and tell you plainly which level the evidence supports. You will get the blend of hours in writing, a rate to check against the market bands above, and an honest answer about the HL literature block. No tutor can promise a grade, and we will not pretend otherwise.
