The documents that tell you whether Physics SL support is working

IB Diploma Physics at Standard Level runs to 150 teaching hours and is assessed by three components. Paper 1 lasts ninety minutes and carries 36%, divided between 1A, thirty multiple-choice questions across the five themes, and 1B, data-based and experimental questions. Paper 2 also lasts ninety minutes and carries 44% in short-answer and extended-response form. The scientific investigation is marked out of 24 and carries the final 20%. Each of those produces a document a parent can read.

Reading them is the point. Confidence is a poor proxy for progress in Physics, because the subject rewards narrow technical habits that feel unremarkable while they are being learned. A student who has been shown how to propagate an uncertainty will not feel different that evening, and a student who has had a comfortable hour of explanation will feel much better while losing exactly the same marks a fortnight later. The documents separate those two situations within a month.

Three documents do most of the work. The first is a scored diagnostic, taken in the opening week, where thirty multiple-choice questions are marked by theme rather than totalled; this turns a vague worry into a list of two or three themes. The second is a marked extended answer, with every lost mark explained in a sentence rather than struck through. The third is the dated version history behind the investigation, which both demonstrates authorship and shows whether the work is running ahead of the school's internal deadline or behind it. None of the three takes a specialist to interpret once you know what each one is for, and all three can be requested in the first fortnight rather than hoped for later.

A fourth, slower document matters as well: the pattern across successive marked scripts. One script is noise. Four scripts over six weeks, with the same losses counted each time, show whether a habit has changed. That pattern is the thing we put on the table at the six-week review, and it is what makes continuing, retargeting or stopping a decision rather than a default. Stopping is a legitimate outcome in this subject, because a Physics SL problem is often one narrow habit rather than a general weakness, and a habit closes in weeks rather than terms.

What follows works through those documents in order, then covers the theme-by-theme error patterns that recur in Dubai Standard Level scripts, what a progress note may and may not claim about a child, and how an online session leaves a better record than a verbal summary at a front door. Lessons for Dubai families run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; those are a service we provide only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A Physics SL student in Dubai has usually come through one of three routes, and each leaves behind a different kind of document. What follows is what is worth asking to see at each stage, and what it genuinely predicts about Standard Level performance.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

At Standard Level the Diploma produces a mock script, internal assessments along the way, a predicted grade and the investigation. The predicted grade is the document families fixate on and the least informative of the four, because it compresses several different skills into one digit. The mock script is the most informative, since it is usually the only timed, full-length, externally styled evidence a student generates before the examination session itself.

Dubai schools publish their own mock windows and internal deadlines, and these differ between schools a few kilometres apart. For a Physics SL family the first genuinely comparable evidence therefore tends to arrive in the first term of DP2. Before then, the usable material is whatever the subject teacher has marked, which is why we ask for it in the first message rather than waiting for a mock to exist.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is assessed against four criteria, and criterion C, processing and evaluating, is the direct ancestor of both Paper 1B and the investigation's data-analysis marks. A marked criterion C task is therefore the single most predictive MYP document for Physics SL. A student with strong knowledge marks and thin processing marks will struggle on precisely the components that are hardest to repair late in DP2.

The IB continuum schools in Al Barsha, Nad Al Sheba and Mirdif run MYP Sciences through to MYP 5, and the Standard or Higher Level decision is usually taken at that point. Asking for a marked criterion C task rather than an overall grade gives a Dubai family a far better basis for that decision than a report comment, and it takes one email to obtain.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE to Physics SL bridge

IGCSE Physics covers much of theme A and parts of themes B and C, but with far less emphasis on uncertainty and on criticising a method. The bridging document worth collecting is a single marked data question: given a table of results, can the student plot the right quantity, extract a gradient with units and estimate an uncertainty? Those three abilities predict Standard Level performance better than an IGCSE grade does.

UK curricula account for 37 per cent of Dubai private school enrolment, so most Physics SL students in the emirate arrive from IGCSE. Cambridge runs its International GCSE series in June and November, and Pearson Edexcel in May/June and November, so a student who sat a November series arrives in the Diploma with fresher practical experience and a shorter gap to close.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics SL is the subject in the URL. The grid below shows it with the Diploma subjects Dubai families most often support in the same term, with each entry written around the document that subject produces rather than its reputation.

Physics

HL and SL

At Standard Level: Paper 1A with thirty multiple-choice questions, Paper 1B on data, Paper 2 extended response, and a 24-mark investigation. The document to ask for first is a theme-scored diagnostic, because a total tells you nothing about which of the five themes failed.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Assessed on the same model with the same four-criterion investigation, so the evidence looks structurally identical. A marked calculation chain shows whether marks go on chemistry or on quantitative discipline, and the answer usually applies to the physics too.

Biology

HL and SL

Carries the heaviest extended-response load of the three sciences, so marking turnaround governs how much evidence a week can produce. Its statistical treatment of data overlaps directly with Paper 1B, and one data session frequently serves both subjects.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebra Physics assumes sits largely here, and AA Paper 1 is sat without technology. A student losing physics marks to rearrangement errors produces scripts that look like physics failures and are not, which a marked AA script settles quickly.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistics block supports data analysis well, and technology is permitted in both AI papers. The gap to watch is manual manipulation, since Physics examinations expect algebraic fluency that the AI course drills less insistently.

Computer Science

HL and SL

The solution component leaves a dated development record of its own, which makes it a useful parallel for students learning why dated versions matter. Computational thinking transfers to modelling questions in themes A and D.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Shares energy and systems content with themes B and E, and its data questions reward the same handling of uncertainty. A sensible second science for a Physics SL student who does not want a third laboratory subject.

Design Technology

HL and SL

The design cycle produces a large internal workload that competes with the investigation for the same weeks. Families taking both should map the two internal deadlines against each other during DP1 rather than discovering the clash in DP2.

Economics

HL and SL

Three internal commentaries give a clear draft history, and graph-reading discipline carries across to Paper 1B. A frequent third subject for Dubai Physics SL students heading towards engineering or business routes.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements that produce evidence at different speeds. All of them begin with a free trial lesson, with no card details taken, and each leaves a written document the family keeps rather than a verbal summary.

A scored diagnostic session

One hour spent on a theme-scored multiple-choice set and one extended answer, marked during the session. The output is a written score by theme and a short list of the habits losing marks. Families who start here buy fewer hours overall, because the hours land on two themes rather than across all five.

  • Thirty questions scored by theme, not totalled
  • One extended answer marked with every loss explained
  • A written summary you keep, with no commitment to continue

A weekly hour that produces a marked script

A fixed Gulf Standard Time slot, work set after each session and returned marked before the next, with the same losses counted each week. Across a Dubai term that produces about a dozen dated scripts. The count across them is the evidence, and it changes well before a school report acknowledges anything.

  • A fixed weekly slot held across the term
  • Each returned script explains every lost mark in a sentence
  • Losses counted week on week so the trend is visible

An investigation milestone schedule

Sessions timed to the stages of the scientific investigation rather than to the syllabus: question, method check, data collection, processing, draft. Each stage leaves a dated artefact, which demonstrates the student's authorship and keeps the work ahead of the school's internal deadline rather than behind it.

  • A dated version at each milestone, produced by the student
  • The processing plan agreed before the practical, not after
  • Draft read against criteria A to D by letter

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The thirty-question diagnostic, and what it tells you that a report cannot

Paper 1A at Standard Level is thirty multiple-choice questions sampling all five themes, and that structure makes it an unusually efficient diagnostic. Scored by theme rather than totalled, thirty questions separate a student who is weak in one area from one who is thinly spread across all of them. Those are different problems with different costs: the first is two or three sessions, the second is a term. A school report cannot distinguish them, because it reports one grade.

A theme-scored result also exposes the pattern that worries families most and matters least: a student scoring well on the themes taught in DP1 and badly on whatever was taught last month. That is almost always a settling problem rather than a capability problem, and the remedy is practice rather than re-teaching. The opposite pattern, weakness in the earliest theme taught, usually means a foundation gap carried in from IGCSE, and that needs different work.

Multiple choice has a second use that is rarely exploited. A wrong answer in physics is usually wrong for a recognisable reason, because the distractors are built from common misconceptions: a sign error, a confusion between potential and field, a half-remembered proportionality. Asking a student why they chose a particular wrong option produces more diagnostic information in thirty seconds than a page of working, and it is the fastest way to find a misconception that has been invisible all term.

The table is the format in which we return the result, and it is what a family should expect in the first week rather than at the end of a month. If a provider cannot score a diagnostic by theme and tell you what each wrong answer suggests, they are measuring a total rather than diagnosing a student, and the hours that follow will be planned by guesswork.

A THEME-SCORED PHYSICS SL DIAGNOSTIC: WHAT A WRONG ANSWER IN EACH THEME SUGGESTS
ThemeWhat the questions sampleWhat a wrong answer usually indicatesThe follow-up it triggers

C: Wave behaviourWave properties, superposition, simple harmonic motionMisreading a wave graph, or confusing phase with displacementGraph interpretation drilled against timed questions
D: FieldsGravitational, electric and magnetic fields and their effectsField strength confused with potential, or sign errorsA session distinguishing the two quantities explicitly
E: Nuclear and quantum physicsAtomic structure, decay, fission and fusionDecay mathematics, or unit prefix slips in energy valuesLogarithm practice plus a prefix checking routine

02

Marking a Physics SL extended answer the way an examiner does

  • Every lost mark explained in one sentence on the returned script
  • Causal links written explicitly, not implied by adjacency
  • Units and significant figures checked as a routine, not an afterthought
  • Working written down even when the student can do it mentally
  • Answer length matched to the mark allocation and the command term

The second document is a marked extended answer, and the useful version explains every lost mark in a sentence rather than striking a line through the page. An extended-response physics mark is awarded for a specific statement: a correct equation quoted, a correct substitution, a stated causal link, a unit, a conclusion in context. A student who sees a total of four out of seven learns nothing. A student who sees that three marks went on an unstated causal link, a missing unit and a prefix error learns three separate, fixable things.

Three loss types recur in Dubai Standard Level scripts. The first is the unstated link: a student writes that the current increases and that the resistance falls without saying that one causes the other, which collects the knowledge mark and forfeits the reasoning one. The second is unit and significant-figure discipline: an answer quoted to five figures from two-figure data, or a milli written where a micro was meant. The third is working omitted because the student could do it mentally, which forfeits method credit entirely.

None of those three is a physics problem, which is why they respond so quickly to being named. A student who receives three consecutive scripts with the same three loss types written out usually eliminates two of them inside a month, and the gain appears across every theme at once rather than in whichever topic was being studied. That is what makes marked extended answers a better investment of a session than another explanation of the same content.

The command term governs how much of this an answer owes, and that is worth checking on any returned script. A two-mark state question needs two facts, not a paragraph. A four-mark explain question needs a chain of four linked statements. A determine question needs visible working. Students who write in the same register for every question lose marks on the long ones while wasting time on the short ones, and the pattern is visible on any marked paper within two minutes.

03

The data-analysis trail: what a marked Paper 1B question proves

Paper 1B is the data-based and experimental section inside Paper 1, and it is the most testable part of Physics SL. Its skills are a short, fixed list, which means progress on it is unusually easy to evidence: either the student plots the quantity that linearises the relationship or they do not, either they state the units of a gradient or they do not, either their suggested improvement is specific to this apparatus or it is generic. Each of those is a yes or no on a marked script.

Because the list is short, a family can hold the whole of it. Identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables. Choose what to plot to produce a straight line. Draw the line and extract a gradient with units, then say what it physically represents. Estimate absolute and percentage uncertainty and propagate it. Distinguish random from systematic error by the shape of the data. Suggest an improvement that names this apparatus rather than any apparatus.

The last of those is where Standard Level students are separated. Repeat the experiment and take an average is a sentence that applies to every experiment ever performed and earns nothing. Replace the metre rule with a travelling microscope, because the uncertainty in the measurement is comparable to the difference being measured, is an observation about this experiment and earns the mark. Learning to tell those apart is practice in criticism, not additional physics.

Three sessions typically cover the whole list, and the evidence that it has landed is two consecutive marked 1B questions where the routines appear without prompting. That is a short, cheap and verifiable piece of progress, which is why we usually recommend it as the first block of hours a Physics SL family buys rather than the last.

The investigation's paper trail: dated milestones, one author

The scientific investigation carries 20% of the Physics SL grade, is marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each, and is capped at 3,000 words. Around ten hours of class time are allocated to it. The evidence worth building alongside it is a dated artefact at each milestone, which does two jobs at once: it keeps the work ahead of the school's internal deadline, and it demonstrates beyond argument that the student produced it.

The milestones are predictable. A research question, written before any data exists. A method with the measurements and their uncertainties listed in advance. A session in the school laboratory, supervised by the school, producing raw data. A processing stage where that data becomes graphs with error bars. A first full draft. A second draft responding to questions. Six dated files, each one visibly building on the last, is a stronger record than any declaration of authenticity.

Dubai schools run their own internal deadlines and their own authenticity conversations, and a student who can walk a coordinator through six dated files is in a different position from one who submits a single polished document. That is worth stating plainly because the essay mills in this market sell completed investigations, and the student who buys one is the person who faces an IB malpractice case rather than the seller.

Our boundary is the same here as everywhere on this site. A tutor may teach a technique on an unrelated experiment, ask whether a research question can be answered with the apparatus available, ask what a graph shows, and point out where a reader cannot follow a method. The student designs the investigation, runs it, processes the data and types the report. Nothing in the submitted file originates with us, and we will say so to a school if ever asked.

Theme-by-theme error patterns in Dubai Standard Level scripts

Across marked Physics SL scripts the same errors recur, and they cluster by theme in ways worth knowing before a diagnostic. Theme A produces sign errors and unresolved vectors, usually because a free-body diagram was never drawn. Theme B produces energy accounting that does not balance and circuit reasoning that treats a changing load as fixed. Theme C produces misread graphs, with displacement and phase confused on a wave diagram that was read too quickly.

Theme D is the most consistent source of lost marks at Standard Level, because field strength and potential are distinct quantities with similar names, related definitions and different units. A student who has not separated them cleanly will answer field questions with potential reasoning and lose marks in a way that looks random and is entirely systematic. One session built around the distinction, with the units written out each time, usually resolves it.

Theme E produces two patterns: decay problems where the logarithm handling is the obstacle rather than the physics, and unit prefix slips in energy values, where a mega and a kilo change places and a correct method yields a wrong answer. The first is a mathematics issue and belongs in a mathematics conversation. The second is transcription discipline and responds to a checking routine applied under timed conditions.

Those patterns are the reason a theme-scored diagnostic is worth an hour. The remedy for each cluster is different in content and in length, from part of a session for a prefix habit to several weeks for a foundation gap carried in from IGCSE. A provider who quotes a term of general revision without knowing which cluster is live is quoting a number rather than a plan, and the evidence to tell them apart takes sixty minutes to produce.

What a progress note says about your child, and what it must never claim

A session note should be short enough to read in thirty seconds: the date, the theme, the component, the marks available, the marks scored, the loss types and the one piece of follow-up work set. That is a record, and it accumulates into something you can audit at six weeks. A note written in assessment vocabulary, or padded to look thorough, gets filed unread, which makes it worse than no note at all.

There are three things such a note will never contain. It will not say that your child is on track for a particular grade, because the grade comes from weighted components compared against boundaries set for that session, and a tutor marking part of one subject cannot know how the rest will score. It will not contain a statistic about our own results, because we cannot show you the sample, the date and the method behind any such figure. It will not promise a timescale for a student nobody has yet assessed.

Records about a child are also personal data, and UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection governs how they are held. What we keep is the enquiry details, the session notes and the marked work. What we do not collect is a photograph, a full school timetable or medical information, because none of those are needed to teach Physics. Ask for deletion and the file goes, and you are told when; we offer copies of the marked scripts first, because a family that paid for a term of marking should keep the output.

The one note that is worth writing at length is the handover. If a tutor changes inside the network, the new tutor should receive the theme diagnostic, the counted loss types and the investigation milestone dates rather than a conversation. That takes one document, it transfers in a day, and it is the difference between restarting and continuing. Families leaving entirely can take the same document with them.

07

Six weeks of evidence, and the three outcomes of the review

Six weeks of weekly sessions should produce four or five marked scripts, a theme diagnostic from week one, a count of loss types for the first fortnight and the last, and whatever investigation milestones fell inside the period. That is enough to make a decision rather than a renewal. The review is a short meeting with those documents in front of both of us, and it produces one of exactly three outcomes.

The first outcome is to continue with the same target, which is right when the counts are falling but the habit is not yet automatic. The second is to change the target, which is right when the original diagnosis has closed and a different cluster has surfaced; this is common after a theme D intervention, where fixing the field and potential distinction reveals a separate pace problem on Paper 1A. The third is to stop, because the problem was narrow and is now fixed.

Stopping is the outcome this market structurally avoids, and it is the one we most want to be trusted on. A Physics SL difficulty is frequently one habit: a prefix slip, a missing causal link, an unpractised data routine. Those close in weeks, not terms, and a weekly slot that continues afterwards is costing a family money for reassurance. We will say so with the scripts on the table, and families who hear it once tend to come back in DP2 when something genuinely new appears.

Two Dubai-specific items belong in that conversation. Schools here set their own mock windows, so the review should be timed to land after a real script exists rather than at a fixed calendar point. And during Ramadan a session that moves to a post-Iftar slot keeps running, where a session that simply pauses often does not resume; the evidence trail has a gap in it either way, and planning for that beats discovering it.

08

Online one-to-one in Dubai, and the record a session leaves behind

  • Marked scripts and notes exist as files, in two places, and survive a tutor change
  • The school keeps the laboratory, the apparatus and the supervision
  • Paper 1B analysis is better served by a shared screen than a shared printout
  • A few days is the usual match time for Physics SL in Dubai
  • If nobody suitable is free, we say so instead of substituting a generalist

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video, on a shared screen where tutor and student write on the same page, timed to Gulf Standard Time and fitted around a Dubai school day. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai. Home visits are a service we provide only in India, and no sentence on this site should suggest otherwise to a family in this emirate.

For a page about evidence the relevant argument is what each arrangement leaves behind. Work exchanged as files exists in two places, can be read by a parent who is travelling, and survives a change of tutor. A shared screen keeps the session's working rather than losing it inside an exercise book. The theme diagnostic, the counted loss types and the investigation milestone dates are documents rather than recollections. A verbal summary at a front door leaves nothing to audit at week six.

The laboratory itself stays with the school, and that is the correct arrangement. Your child's apparatus, access and supervision come from their own teacher, because the investigation has to be their own work under their school's conditions. What a tutor adds is the design before the practical and the processing afterwards, which is where most of the 24 marks sit. For Paper 1B, analysis of data on a shared screen is a better tool than two people sharing one printout.

On availability we would rather be plain than optimistic. Standard Level Physics is reasonably well covered and a match in Dubai usually takes a few days. Where no Physics specialist is free in the slot you need, we will say so and offer a different time or a tutor in another time zone whose evening is your afternoon. What we will not do is seat a general science tutor in a Diploma Physics slot and let the arrangement imply a specialism that is not there.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

The variable that decides how much evidence a term produces is not the community a family lives in but whether the weekly slot survives the term. The notes below describe what each area does to that slot and to the turnaround on marked work.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established coastal districts with short school commutes, so a late-afternoon slot usually holds. Marked work comes back fastest where sessions begin on time and run the full hour without a rushed start.

Dubai Marina

Dense towers and short walks to school, which makes a 4.30pm start realistic. That matters in Physics because a full ninety-minute timed paper has to fit inside a single uninterrupted sitting.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Growing family communities with school destinations in several directions. Two shorter sessions a week tend to produce more frequent evidence here than one long block that competes with a second school run.

Mirdif

An eastern district served by IB continuum schools, with a long crossing to the western corridor. Online delivery is what makes a fixed weekly slot survivable, and a surviving slot is what produces a continuous script trail.

Dubai Sports City and Motor City

Villa and apartment communities with an early finish and reliable afternoon availability. Families here often hold the same slot for two years, which produces the longest and most readable evidence sets we see.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

Older, metro-served districts with a strong group-tuition presence. The question that arises most often here is whether a centre class produces any individual marked work at all, and in most cases it does not.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer communities with Diploma cohorts and mock calendars still settling. We ask for the school's published dates each term rather than planning the evidence schedule against last year's assumptions.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Western and coastal Dubai

Diploma schools from Al Sufouh through Al Barsha towards the Marina, several running Standard Level Physics in groups of under ten. Students we support here most often arrive with a theme C or theme D gap and a data section they have never practised separately.

Southern and eastern Dubai

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Score a diagnostic before planning anything

The first session produces a theme-scored result across all five themes and one marked extended answer. Thirty questions separate a single weak theme from a thin spread, and those are different problems with different costs. Everything after this is planned from that document rather than from a syllabus.

  2. 02

    Take the free trial lesson

One lesson, free, no card details taken, no obligation afterwards. Your child works with the tutor we actually propose, on their own recent Physics work, and the session ends with a short written note of what it found. You keep that note whether or not you book anything further.

  3. 03

Name the component and the loss types

Before the second session we put in writing which component the hours target and which loss types we are counting: causal links, units and prefixes, omitted working, or a data routine. Counting something specific is what makes the six-week review a measurement rather than an opinion.

  4. 04

Produce a marked script every week

Work set after each session and returned marked before the next, with every lost mark explained in a sentence. Over a Dubai term that is around a dozen dated scripts. Keep them together; the count across them is the evidence, and any single script is noise.

  5. 05

Review after six weeks and decide

Continue with the same target, change the target, or stop. We bring the diagnostic, the scripts and the counts, and the decision is yours. Stopping is a real answer in a subject where the problem is often a single habit that closes in a few weeks.

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A theme-scored diagnostic in week one

Thirty multiple-choice questions scored by theme rather than totalled, plus a question about why each wrong option was chosen. That separates a single weak theme from a general pace problem, and the two need different hours and different numbers of them.

Every lost mark explained in writing

A returned script says which sentence was missing, which unit was dropped and which line of working was skipped. A total of four out of seven teaches nothing. Three named losses teach three fixable things, and two of them usually close inside a month.

Loss types counted, not described

We count causal links, unit and prefix errors, omitted working and data-routine failures, first fortnight against last. Counts are what a parent can genuinely audit at a review, and they move weeks before a Dubai school report says anything.

Six dated investigation files, one author

Question, method, raw data, processing, draft, final version. Each one dated and visibly built on the last, which keeps the work ahead of the school deadline and makes authorship a matter of record rather than of assertion.

Nothing claimed that cannot be shown

No predicted grades from a tutor who marks part of one subject, no satisfaction percentage, no proportion-improved figure, no timescale quoted for an unassessed student. Pages in this search publish all of those, sometimes in two contradictory versions.

The records are yours

Scripts, notes and the diagnostic transfer with the student, inside the network or out of it, under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021. Ask for deletion and the file goes, with copies offered first. Student work is not a retention device.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is the first piece of evidence a Physics SL tutor should produce?+

A theme-scored diagnostic, in the first week, not a syllabus overview. Thirty multiple-choice questions marked by theme rather than totalled will tell you whether your child has one weak theme or a thin spread across five, and those are different problems costing different amounts to fix. Add one marked extended answer with every lost mark explained in a sentence, and you have a document you can plan from. A first session that produces only an impression has produced nothing you can check later.

How do thirty multiple-choice questions diagnose a Physics SL problem?+

Paper 1A samples all five themes, so thirty questions give coverage no class test provides. Scored by theme, the result separates a single weak area from a pace problem spread evenly across the paper. The distractors help too: wrong options in physics are built from common misconceptions, so asking why a particular wrong answer was chosen reveals a sign error, a field-and-potential confusion or a half-remembered proportionality in seconds. That is faster than reading a page of working and usually more informative.

What does a marked Physics SL Paper 2 answer show a parent?+

Which specific statements were missing. Extended-response marks are awarded for a quoted equation, a correct substitution, a stated causal link, a unit, or a conclusion in context. A total of four out of seven conveys nothing, while a script showing that three marks went on an unstated causal link, a missing unit and a prefix slip conveys three fixable things. Those three loss types recur across themes, so naming them produces a gain on every topic rather than only the one studied.

How often should a Physics SL student have work marked?+

Weekly, during any paid arrangement. One marked script per session, returned before the next one, is what turns a term of lessons into a readable record of about a dozen dated documents. Less frequently than that and there is no pattern to read; more frequently and the student is writing rather than learning. The important condition is that marking sits inside the fee, because a tutor charging separately for marking has a quiet reason to set very little of it.

What evidence shows the scientific investigation is on track?+

Dated files at each milestone. A research question written before any data exists. A method listing each measurement and its uncertainty. Raw data from the school laboratory. Processed graphs with error bars and a propagated final uncertainty. A full draft inside the 3,000-word limit. A revision responding to questions. Six dated artefacts, each visibly built on the last, keep the work ahead of the school deadline and settle any question about who produced it far better than a declaration does.

Do significant figures and units really cost Physics SL marks?+

Consistently, and they are the quietest losses in the subject. An answer quoted to five figures from two-figure data is penalised, and a milli written where a micro was meant turns correct physics into a wrong answer by a factor of a thousand. Neither is a knowledge problem, which is why neither responds to further explanation. They respond to a checking routine applied under timed conditions: last line, check the unit, check the prefix, check the figures against the data. Two sessions usually embed it.

What are the three outcomes of a six-week Physics SL review?+

Continue with the same target, change the target, or stop. Continuing is right when the counted losses are falling but the habit is not automatic yet. Changing is right when the original problem has closed and a different cluster has surfaced, which happens often after a theme D intervention. Stopping is right when the problem was narrow and is now fixed, and it is the outcome this market structurally avoids. We will recommend it with the scripts on the table when the counts support it.

How do we compare a Physics SL mock with a real session paper?+

Carefully, because mock papers vary in difficulty between Dubai schools and are sometimes assembled from several past sessions. A mock is the best diagnostic a school produces and the worst predictor. Use it for what it shows: performance on a full-length timed paper against the student's own cohort, including whether the last third of the paper was rushed. Do not read the percentage as a grade, since boundaries are set per examination session and are not published in advance by anyone.

What records does IB Gram keep about a Physics SL student?+

The enquiry details, the session notes, the theme diagnostic and the marked work, held under UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection. We do not collect a photograph, a full school timetable or medical information, because teaching Physics does not require any of them. Ask for deletion and the file is removed and you are told when, with copies of the marked scripts offered first, since a family who paid for a term of marking should keep what it produced.

Can we see the Physics SL session notes if we change tutors?+

They are yours, and inside our network they move with the student automatically. A handover document should carry the theme diagnostic, the counted loss types and the investigation milestone dates, so a new tutor continues rather than restarts. If you leave entirely, ask and we send the lot. That portability is one practical reason work exchanged as files beats work recorded in an exercise book that stays in a school bag.

Which Physics SL theme produces the most repeated errors?+

Theme D, fields. Field strength and potential are distinct quantities with similar names, related definitions and different units, and a student who has not separated them cleanly answers field questions with potential reasoning. The losses look random across a script and are in fact entirely systematic. One session built around the distinction, with the units written out every time, usually resolves it, and the improvement then appears on questions that seemed unrelated to the original problem.

How soon before the May session is it too late to start Physics SL support?+

It is rarely too late to fix a habit and often too late to rebuild a theme. Six weeks is enough to close a prefix problem, a missing causal link or the Paper 1B routines, all of which pay back across the whole paper. Six weeks is not enough to teach theme D from nothing while also preparing two other subjects. A diagnostic will tell you which situation you are in, and we will say plainly when the honest answer is to prioritise differently.

Does the tutor set Physics SL homework, and who marks it?+

Yes, and the tutor marks it, with every lost mark explained in a sentence and returned before the next session. The quantity is deliberately modest: one timed question set or one extended answer, rather than a pile that gets half done. Marking is inside the fee rather than billed separately. Work the school sets stays with the school, and where a school clinic already covers the same ground we will say so, because it is free and we are not.

What should a Physics SL progress note never claim?+

Three things. That your child is on track for a particular grade, since the grade comes from weighted components measured against boundaries set for that session and a tutor marks only part of one subject. Any statistic about our own results, because we cannot show you the sample, the date and the method. And a timescale for a student nobody has assessed yet. A note that avoids all three and reports counted losses instead is more useful than one that reassures.

How do we know our child is doing the Physics SL work themselves?+

The dated trail answers it. Six investigation files, each visibly building on the last, show the development rather than asserting it. Weekly marked scripts in the student's own hand show the same thing for examination work. Our boundary is stated on every page: a tutor teaches technique on other examples, asks questions and points out where a reader cannot follow a method, and the student designs, runs, processes and types their own report. Nothing in the submitted file originates with us.

Ask for the diagnostic before you buy any hours

Send the school, the year group and the most recent marked Physics work, and we will propose a specialist and a free trial lesson with no card details taken. That session produces a theme-scored diagnostic across all five themes and one marked extended answer with every lost mark explained, and you keep both whether or not you continue. From there it is a named component, a weekly marked script, counted loss types and a review at six weeks where continuing, retargeting and stopping are all real answers. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
