Cambridge IGCSE Travel and Tourism 0471 Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE Travel and Tourism 0471 tutor is useful for a reason specific to applied subjects: the content is readable and the marks are not. Candidates who know the industry still lose marks by writing adjectives where the paper wants named features, and general advice where it wants the organisation in the stimulus. Dubai students have the best case study in the world outside the window, and this page is about using it properly. Sessions run one-to-one over live video.

  • Named features and quoted data, rather than adjectives about destinations
  • Stimulus-anchored answers drilled, because generic advice earns nothing
  • Dubai used as a worked case study with checkable, specific detail
  • Entry components and series confirmed with the school before any plan is set

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The subject reads easily, which is exactly why it is mismarked

Travel and Tourism is chosen by students who find it accessible, and they are right that it is accessible. The content makes sense on first reading, the examples are familiar, and nothing in it is conceptually hard in the way that organic chemistry is hard. That accessibility is precisely why the subject produces so many disappointed results. A student who understands the material assumes understanding is what is being marked, and writes accordingly.

What the paper actually rewards is specificity. Asked to describe the appeal of a destination, a candidate who writes that it has beautiful beaches and many attractions has written nothing an examiner can credit; one who names the airport, the type of accommodation, a specific attraction and the market it serves has written an answer. Asked how an organisation could improve its customer care, a candidate who offers general good advice scores far below one who uses the organisation described in the stimulus material by name and responds to its particular problem.

Then there is data. Applied subjects put charts, tables and tourism figures in front of candidates and ask them to describe a trend or make a comparison. The mark goes to the student who states the trend and quotes a figure from the source, and it is withheld from the student who describes every number in the table in sequence. This is a technique, not knowledge, and it takes about one session to install.

For a student in Dubai the subject comes with an unusual advantage. The emirate is a functioning worked example of nearly every topic on an applied tourism course: a global hub airport, a flag carrier and a low-cost carrier, a second airport in the south, a large hotel inventory across several market segments, purpose-built attractions, a cruise terminal, a government department responsible for economy and tourism, and visible tension between development and sustainability. A student who learns to describe what is around them in the paper's language has a case study nobody can take away.

On delivery: lessons are one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, since that is a service offered only in India. For 0471 this matters more than for a core subject. Travel and Tourism is taught in a minority of Dubai schools, which makes the number of tutors who have taken a cohort through the syllabus genuinely small, and selecting from that group by who can drive to a particular address would usually mean not selecting a 0471 tutor at all. Everything on this page that is sourced is attributed, and everything that must be checked against the syllabus for a particular examination year is flagged as such. No grade is predicted and no figure quoted here is an IB Gram price.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Travel and Tourism runs from an IGCSE option through to degree level, and the UAE has an unusually direct route from one end to the other. These are the stages a Dubai student might pass through.

Cambridge IGCSE Travel and Tourism

An applied Cambridge Upper Secondary course covering the structure of the industry, destinations and their appeal, customer care and working procedures, products and services, marketing, and the economic, social and environmental impacts of tourism. The assessment style rewards specific, stimulus-anchored writing, which is a different habit from the discursive style that works in some other humanities subjects.

Confirm with the school's exams officer which components your child is entered for and which syllabus version applies to their examination year. Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle and applied subjects can change their component structure between versions, which makes revision material found online a genuine risk rather than a minor inconvenience.

Cambridge International AS & A Level Travel and Tourism

The sixth-form continuation, treating the industry at a management level: destination planning, marketing strategy, visitor management and sustainable development. Extended responses grow considerably and candidates are expected to evaluate business decisions rather than describe practice. The IGCSE habits that transfer best are data handling and stimulus discipline; the habit that must be built is sustained argument.

Not every Dubai school running 0471 continues it to AS and A Level, because a small Year 12 group is harder to timetable than a Year 10 option. Ask whether the group actually ran in the current academic year, and ask how many students were in it, rather than relying on a prospectus listing.

Applied and vocational hospitality routes

Several Dubai schools and colleges offer applied qualifications in hospitality, travel or business as an alternative to a second A Level. Assessment is typically more coursework-weighted, which suits students who work steadily and struggle with a single examination window. The 0471 content maps across directly; the assessment habits do not, because the demand shifts from timed writing to sustained portfolio work.

Equivalency rules differ by qualification type, and a vocational qualification is not automatically treated like an A Level for UAE attestation. Check the specific qualification with the Ministry of Education or the emirate attestation authority before assuming a route, and ask the receiving university what it accepts in writing.

DegreeAges 18+

Hospitality and tourism management degrees

The UAE hosts several hospitality and tourism management programmes, and the sector itself is one of the larger graduate employers in the country. Entry rarely requires school Travel and Tourism, but the subject does three things that help: it supplies industry vocabulary, it builds comfort with tourism data, and it gives a candidate something specific to say at interview about a destination they actually know.

On the British track, UAE equivalency requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE passes at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, alongside one Advanced Level pass at grade E or above or two Advanced Subsidiary passes at the same grade. Verify the current wording with the Ministry rather than with any tutoring website.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the content areas commonly taught on an applied tourism course at this level, with what each one demands in an answer. Confirm the exact content and component list in the syllabus document for your child's examination year.

Structure of the travel and tourism industry

Foundation area

Sectors and organisations, from carriers and accommodation providers to tour operators, travel agents and tourist boards, and how they relate to one another. Marks go to using the correct term for the correct organisation, so vocabulary accuracy matters more here than explanation.

Features of worldwide destinations

Core area

What makes a destination appealing, and to which market. The examinable skill is naming features with precision, gateway airports, accommodation types, natural and built attractions, climate patterns and accessibility, rather than praising a place in general terms.

Customer care and working procedures

Core area

What good service consists of, how organisations handle complaints, and the procedures staff follow. Deceptively simple and heavily mismarked, because candidates write common-sense advice instead of responding to the specific organisation and problem in the stimulus material.

Travel and tourism products and services

Core area

Packages, ancillary products, transport options, itineraries and the way products are combined for a market segment. Questions often supply a customer with stated needs, so the answer has to match products to that customer rather than list what exists.

Destination management and appeal

Applied area

How destinations are developed, managed and promoted, including visitor management, infrastructure and carrying capacity. Dubai supplies abundant material here, from airport capacity to purpose-built attraction districts, all of it checkable rather than imagined.

Marketing and promotion

Applied area

Market research, segmentation, the promotional mix and how a destination or product is positioned. Candidates do well to name a real campaign or a real market segment, because a specific example separates a creditable answer from a textbook definition.

Sustainable tourism and environmental impact

Applied area

The environmental consequences of tourism development, approaches to managing them, and the tension between growth and conservation. The highest-tariff questions live here, and they want a weighted judgement about a trade-off rather than a list of pros and cons.

Economic and socio-cultural impacts

Applied area

Employment, income, leakage, seasonality, cultural change and the effects on host communities. The discipline is to attribute an effect to a mechanism: tourism raises employment through specific activity, not simply because visitors arrive.

Interpreting tourism data

Technique, examined throughout

Reading charts and tables of arrivals, spend or capacity, describing a trend and quoting a figure from the source. A technique rather than content, worth a reliable share of the paper, and installable in roughly one session of focused work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover how Dubai families use 0471 support. Each is defined by what the student produces, because in an applied subject production is the only thing that reveals the technique problem.

Stimulus-drill session

Sixty minutes built around stimulus material: a described organisation, a customer with stated needs, or a data table. The student writes short answers anchored to the material, and the marking checks one thing above all, whether the organisation or person in the stimulus actually appears in the answer.

  • Three short stimulus-anchored answers per session
  • Each answer checked for named use of the stimulus
  • Adjectives circled and replaced with named features
  • One rule stated at the end, tested the following week

Case-study build

A short block spent constructing a reusable case study the student owns, usually Dubai plus one contrasting destination. Each topic area gets a specific, checkable detail attached, so the student walks into the examination with named material for destination, impact, marketing and sustainability questions.

  • One destination developed across every content area
  • A contrasting destination built for comparison questions
  • Every detail checkable, nothing invented or estimated
  • Case study tested cold rather than read back

Data and extended-response clinic

Focused work on the two technique areas that decide the grade: describing a trend with a quoted figure, and writing a weighted judgement on a sustainability or development question. Short, specific and the part most revision material covers least well.

  • Trend plus quoted figure drilled on real chart material
  • Comparison answers structured before being written
  • Judgement paragraphs that commit, with a stated reason
  • No pros-and-cons lists permitted in the final answer

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What 0471 asks a candidate to do

Applied subjects are assessed by demand type rather than by topic, which is why a student can revise every content area and still write mid-range answers. There are six demands on a paper of this kind, and each has its own shape, its own length and its own characteristic failure. Teaching them separately is faster than teaching the content again, because the content is usually already there.

The pattern is consistent across cohorts. Naming questions get over-written, costing time that the extended response later needs. Destination questions get adjectives instead of named features. Applied questions about an organisation get general good advice that would be true of any hotel or any airline. Data questions get a recitation of the table rather than a trend and a figure. Evaluation questions get a list of positives followed by a list of negatives and then a stop.

The table sets each demand against what earns the mark and the error that most often replaces it. Read the final row twice. The highest-tariff question on an applied tourism paper usually asks for a judgement about a development or a policy, and the answer has to commit to a position with a stated reason for the weighting. A conclusion saying that it depends on circumstances is a true statement and an uncreditable one, and students write it constantly because it feels balanced. The practical use of this table is as a self-check before an answer is written rather than after it is marked. A student who identifies the demand type in the first ten seconds has already made the two decisions that matter, how long the answer should be and whether a judgement is owed.

02

Dubai as a live case study, used properly

  • One destination run through every content area, not just appeal
  • Observation-level detail, which is what distinguishes an owned case study
  • Every fact checkable; no invented figures, ever
  • A contrasting destination built for comparison questions
  • The case study tested cold, not read back

Examiners can tell the difference between a case study a student owns and one they borrowed. Owned case studies contain the kind of detail nobody puts in a revision guide: how a particular district is reached, which market segment a hotel strip serves, what happens to visitor numbers in August, which part of a development came first. Dubai students can produce that detail from observation, and it reads as authentic because it is.

The way to build it is to take one destination and run it through every content area deliberately. Industry structure: which carriers, which terminals, which accommodation groups, which government body does what. Destination appeal: the specific attractions and the segments they target, business and leisure, stopover and long-stay. Customer care: what a service standard looks like in a sector where it is a competitive variable. Marketing: how the destination positions itself and to whom. Impacts: employment, seasonality, cultural change, construction and water use.

Two disciplines keep it honest. First, every detail must be checkable; nothing invented, no estimated figures, no visitor numbers the student cannot source. An invented statistic in an answer is worse than no statistic, and it is a habit that becomes expensive at AS Level. Second, the case study must be tested cold rather than reread, because a case study recognised on a page is not one available under timed conditions. A second, contrasting destination is worth building as well, since comparison questions are common and a student with one example can only answer half of them.

03

The components your school enters, and what to confirm

This is the dullest section on the page and the one that saves the most wasted effort. Applied Cambridge syllabuses are revised on a cycle and component structures can change between versions, so revision material found online may describe a different assessment from the one your child will sit. A family that confirms five facts with the school at the start of Year 10 removes the whole category of risk.

The five are the exact syllabus code on the entry, the series the school enters, whether any non-examined component applies to that cohort, which Cambridge administrative zone the centre sits in, and whether any specified destination or content list applies to the examination year. None of these is difficult to obtain; all of them require asking the exams officer rather than a subject teacher, because the entry is an administrative fact rather than a teaching one.

The zone question is worth particular attention. Cambridge allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after working from the wrong version. A timetable downloaded from a search result is therefore not a safe document. Take the dates from the centre, and treat any date restated on a tutoring website, this one included, as something to verify at source. One further point belongs here, and it is about copyright rather than logistics. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are published by the awarding body and should be obtained from cambridgeinternational.org or through the school. A provider offering to supply them as downloads is distributing material that is not theirs to distribute.

04

Customer care: the hardest easy topic on the paper

Every teacher of applied tourism knows this pattern. Customer care looks like the topic a sensible 15-year-old could answer without studying, and it reliably produces the weakest answers on the paper. The reason is that the questions supply a specific organisation with a specific problem, and candidates respond with general principles of good service that would apply equally to a dentist.

The repair is a rule rather than more content. Any answer about an organisation named in stimulus material must use that organisation by name, and must respond to the detail the stimulus supplied. If the material says the hotel receives complaints about check-in queues at peak arrival times, the answer is about check-in queues at peak arrival times, not about the importance of friendly staff. The detail is in the question because the examiner put it there to be used.

A second habit helps: separating what an organisation should do from why it matters commercially. Many questions want both, and candidates supply one. Reducing check-in queues matters because arrival experience affects review scores and repeat custom, and saying so turns a procedural answer into one that reaches the higher band. Practised on five short stimulus items in a single session, this is one of the faster improvements available in the subject, and it transfers directly to the applied questions in Business Studies for students taking both. Dubai students have an advantage worth using here as well. Many live in households where a parent works in aviation, hospitality or retail, and service standards are a real topic at home rather than an abstraction. A specific observation about how a complaint was actually handled is far stronger evidence than a sentence about the importance of customer satisfaction.

05

Sustainability and the judgement nobody commits to

  • Name the trade-off before weighing it
  • State the ground for the weighting, not just the conclusion
  • Timescale is usually the most defensible ground available
  • Never attach an invented figure to a sustainability claim
  • A judgement that commits beats a balanced non-answer every time

The highest-tariff questions on an applied tourism paper tend to concern sustainability, development or impact, and they ask for a judgement. This is where the largest single block of marks sits and where the most consistent failure occurs: candidates produce a competent list of environmental, economic and social considerations, arrange them into positives and negatives, and then decline to decide anything.

A creditable answer names the trade-off explicitly and then weights it. A development may create employment and raise local income while increasing water consumption and pressure on a coastal habitat. The judgement is not that both matter; it is which matters more in this case and on what grounds, with the grounds stated. Timescale is often the most useful ground available: a cost borne immediately against a benefit accruing over decades, or the reverse, gives a student a defensible basis for weighting that does not depend on opinion.

Dubai supplies rich material for this, and it should be used carefully. Coastal development, water use in a desert climate, construction cycles and the carbon cost of long-haul aviation are all genuine considerations and all observable. What a student must not do is attach invented numbers to them. A judgement supported by a named mechanism and a stated timescale is stronger than one propped up by a figure the candidate could not source, and the second is a habit that becomes a serious problem in a sixth-form course where sources are expected.

06

Where 0471 marks are actually lost

Across marked scripts the losses concentrate in six places, none of which is a gap in industry knowledge. Each has a specific repair and each repair is short, which is why diagnosis before teaching matters so much in this subject. A tutor who begins by reteaching the structure of the industry to a student whose problem is adjectives has spent a session on something that was not broken.

The largest loss is the adjective problem, and it is the easiest to see on a page. A student describing a destination writes words like stunning, popular, modern and well-connected, none of which names anything. Circling every adjective in one of the student's own answers and asking them to replace each with a named feature is a ten-minute exercise that changes how they write permanently. The second largest is the stimulus-free answer described earlier.

The table lists all six with the session that fixes each. Note the last row. Timing in applied subjects fails in a particular way: candidates over-write the short recall questions because they feel confident on them, and then meet the extended judgement question with eight minutes left. That is a timing problem, not a sustainability problem, and it will look like a content weakness on any report that only records the mark. The six losses also tend to arrive together, which is encouraging rather than depressing. A student who writes in adjectives usually also ignores the stimulus and recites the data table, because all three are the same underlying habit of writing about the subject rather than answering the question in front of them. Repair one and the others move with it.

Cambridge series and the entry lag for a 0471 candidate

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Most Dubai schools enter the June series. The dates that actually govern a family's planning are not the examination dates but the entry deadlines, which sit months earlier and are submitted by the school rather than by the family.

The size of that lag is easiest to see from the board that publishes a full series timetable well in advance. Pearson's International GCSE November 2026 papers ran from late October to 19 November 2026, its June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and the November 2025 results did not reach students until 22 January 2026. The Cambridge June and November series that UAE candidates actually sit are built the same way: entries close in the spring for June, several months ahead of the first paper, with the centre's internal cut-off earlier again, and results follow on Cambridge Direct in August. A student who decides after that cut-off that they would like to sit 0471 has not missed a deadline by a week; they have moved themselves into the next series.

For a candidate considering a retake, the practical consequence is that the decision has to be made before the previous results feel settled. Pearson, used by some Dubai schools for other subjects, publishes an International GCSE November series whose 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with June 2026 results reaching centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day, and November 2025 results reaching students on 22 January 2026. Those dates illustrate how a retake can fit inside one school year, and they should still be confirmed on the board's own timetable page.

Where 0471 leads in the UAE, and what equivalency asks

The UAE is one of the few places where an applied tourism qualification sits next to the industry it describes. The sector employs at scale across aviation, accommodation, attractions, events and retail, and a student who understands how those parts connect has something concrete to say in an interview at eighteen. That is a genuine argument for the subject, separate from whether a university asks for it.

The administrative layer needs stating plainly. On the British track, UAE equivalency requires five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited Advanced Level subject at grade E or above or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. An applied subject can form part of the five where it is among the accredited subjects submitted. One ranking competitor page states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced figure is five.

Equivalency and attestation sit with the Ministry of Education and the emirate authority. Across the UAE, Dubai's private schools are overseen by KHDA, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain by ADEK, Sharjah by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah by its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah by the federal Ministry of Education. IB Gram describes these processes and does not perform, expedite or guarantee any part of them, and no tutoring is required for equivalency, admission or progression. Verify any requirement at the authority's own source before acting on it.

Getting started with 0471 in Dubai, and the availability position

Starting takes three facts and one hour. The three facts are the syllabus code and board from the school entry form, the series the school enters, and the most recent real mark with the paper it came from. The hour is a free trial lesson, one per subject, with no payment details taken beforehand, built around a short stimulus item so that the first thing produced is an answer rather than a conversation about the industry.

The disclosure concerns supply, and in this subject it is more acute than in most. Travel and Tourism is taught in a minority of Dubai schools and entered by a small number of candidates relative to the sciences or Mathematics, so the number of tutors in the region who have taken a cohort through the syllabus to examination is genuinely limited. On a week when none is free, we will say so and set out the alternatives: a specialist in another time zone whose availability suits a Dubai evening, a start date a few weeks out, or a short diagnostic engagement now with the main block beginning when a specialist is available.

What we will not do is present a Business Studies or Geography tutor as a 0471 specialist. The content overlap is real and tempting, and it is not the same thing. An applied tourism paper rewards a particular style of stimulus-anchored, named-feature writing, and a capable teacher who has never marked to that scheme will produce lessons that feel useful and scripts that stay in the middle band. A marked stimulus answer makes that visible in the first session, which is why the trial exists.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Dubai has a feature no other case study offers a student: the industry is in the neighbourhood. These notes cover both what a community can supply as evidence and when a session can realistically start.

Deira

The oldest commercial district, close to the creek, the souks and the abra crossings. Students here can describe heritage and cultural tourism as something observed rather than read about, which is exactly the specificity a destination question rewards.

Al Garhoud

Next to the main airport, with aviation and hotel employment visible in daily life. A student from this area can talk about hub operations and airport-adjacent accommodation with detail that reads as genuine rather than assembled from a textbook.

Dubai Festival City

A mixed retail, hotel and residential development beside the creek, and a usable local example of how a single site combines accommodation, retail and attraction functions. Journey times to school vary, so an evening slot generally holds better than an after-school one.

Dubai South

Built around the second airport and the exhibition legacy site in the south of the emirate. Students here live inside a worked example of planned tourism infrastructure, which is a strong source of named detail for development questions.

Jebel Ali

Port, free zone and a cruise and logistics corridor. Maritime tourism and the relationship between freight and passenger infrastructure are observable here, and both come up in questions about transport and access.

Al Qusais

Dense residential district with long school journeys in several directions. Arrival times vary considerably day to day, so a fixed weekend session holds across a term more reliably than a weekday one.

Muhaisnah

Residential area with students travelling to schools across the northern and eastern districts. Evening sessions after the commute has been absorbed work better than anything attempted immediately on arrival home.

School ecosystem

Deira, Al Qusais and Muhaisnah

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Confirm the five administrative facts

Syllabus code, series, any non-examined component, the centre's administrative zone and any specified content list. All five come from the exams officer rather than the subject teacher, because an entry is an administrative fact. Doing this in Year 10 removes an entire category of wasted revision.

  2. 02

Diagnose on a stimulus item, not in conversation

The trial lesson, free, one per subject with no payment details taken beforehand, is built around a short stimulus and a data question. What the student writes in those fifteen minutes identifies whether the problem is adjectives, stimulus discipline, data handling or timing, and those need different sessions.

  3. 03

    Fix the adjective habit first

Circle every adjective in one of the student's own destination answers and replace each with a named feature. Ten minutes, no new content, and it changes how the student writes for the rest of the course. It is also the loss most visible to an examiner on a first read.

  4. 04

Build one case study the student owns

Dubai plus one contrasting destination, run through every content area, with every detail checkable and nothing invented. Then test it cold rather than reading it back, because a case study recognised on a page is not one available under timed conditions.

  5. 05

    Finish on judgement and timing

Three scaffolded judgement paragraphs that name a trade-off and weight it, then one timed paper with time per question logged. Those two pieces of work address the largest block of marks and the most common reason candidates never reach it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught as an applied subject, not a reading subject

The content of 0471 is accessible and the marks are not, so sessions go on stimulus-anchored writing rather than on retelling industry structure. A student who already owns the notes does not need them read aloud at an hourly rate.

Named features replace adjectives as a rule

Stunning, popular and well-connected name nothing and earn nothing. Replacing each adjective in the student's own answer with an airport, an accommodation type, an attraction or a market segment is the fastest visible improvement available on the paper.

Dubai developed as a case study the student owns

Observation-level detail about a real destination reads as authentic because it is, and it cannot be taken away in an examination. Every fact is checkable and nothing is invented, which also builds the sourcing habit a sixth-form course will require.

Administrative risk removed at the start

Syllabus code, series, components, centre zone and any specified content list confirmed with the exams officer before planning. Cambridge states that it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who works from the wrong zone timetable, which makes this a real risk rather than paperwork.

The supply position is stated honestly

0471 is entered by a small number of candidates in this region, so specialists are limited. Where none is free we say so and name the alternatives rather than presenting a Business Studies or Geography tutor as a Travel and Tourism specialist.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does Cambridge IGCSE Travel and Tourism 0471 cover?+

The structure of the travel and tourism industry and its organisations, the features that make destinations appealing and to which markets, customer care and working procedures, products and services, destination management, marketing and promotion, and the economic, social and environmental impacts of tourism including sustainability. Running through all of it is a data-handling element, since questions supply charts and tables of arrivals, spend or capacity. Confirm the exact content and component list in the syllabus document for your child's examination year, because applied syllabuses are revised on a cycle.

Is 0471 an easier IGCSE than Geography or Business Studies?+

The content is more accessible and the marking is not more forgiving, which is why the subject produces so many surprised results. Nothing in it is conceptually difficult, so students assume understanding is what is assessed. What is actually assessed is specificity: named features instead of adjectives, the organisation in the stimulus used by name, a trend with a figure quoted from the source, and a judgement that commits. Those are techniques rather than knowledge, and a student who has not been shown them will write fluently and score in the middle.

Which components does my child's school enter for 0471?+

Ask the exams officer rather than the subject teacher, because the entry is an administrative fact. Five things are worth confirming at the same time: the exact syllabus code on the entry, the series the school enters, whether any non-examined component applies to that cohort, which of Cambridge's six administrative zones the centre sits in, and whether any specified destination or content list applies to the examination year. Applied syllabuses can change component structure between versions, so material found online may describe a different assessment from the one your child will sit.

Can my child use Dubai as a case study in 0471 answers?+

Yes, and it is one of the strongest positions a candidate anywhere can be in. Dubai supplies a working example of nearly every content area: hub and secondary airports, carriers, a large hotel inventory across market segments, purpose-built attractions, a cruise terminal, a government department responsible for economy and tourism, and visible tension between development and environmental limits. Two rules keep it creditable. Every detail must be checkable, with no invented figures. And the case study must be tested cold, because one recognised on a page is not one available under timed conditions.

Where do 0471 candidates lose the most marks?+

Six places, none of them industry knowledge. Adjectives where named features were wanted. Applied answers that ignore the organisation described in the stimulus and offer advice that would suit any business. Data answers that recite the table instead of stating a trend and quoting one figure. Impacts asserted with no mechanism attached. Judgement questions answered with a pros list, a cons list and no decision. And time spent over-writing short recall questions, leaving the highest-tariff question rushed. Each repair is short, which is why diagnosis should come before any reteaching.

Does 0471 count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

An applied subject can form part of the required count where it is among the accredited subjects submitted. The published British-track requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from those five, alongside one accredited Advanced Level subject at grade E or above or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. One ranking competitor states six subjects are required; the sourced figure is five. Verify current requirements with the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority directly.

Will 0471 help my child get into a hospitality degree in the UAE?+

It helps as preparation more than as a formal requirement. Most hospitality and tourism management programmes do not demand the school subject, and entry turns on attested certificates and the programme's own criteria. What 0471 supplies is industry vocabulary, comfort with tourism data, and something concrete to say at interview about a destination the student genuinely knows. Ask the admissions office what it accepts in writing rather than inferring it, and remember that no tutoring is required for admission or progression anywhere in this process.

How much tourism data does a 0471 candidate have to interpret?+

Enough that the technique is worth a session on its own. Questions supply charts and tables of visitor arrivals, spend, capacity or market share, and ask for a trend, a comparison or a calculation. The mark goes to the answer that states the trend and quotes one figure from the source. It is withheld from the answer that describes every number in sequence, which is what most candidates do unprompted. The technique is installable in roughly one session of focused work on real chart material and pays back on every paper afterwards.

Does 0471 lead to Cambridge A Level Travel and Tourism?+

It leads there naturally where a school offers the continuation, which is code 9395 at AS and A Level. The sixth-form course treats the industry at management level, covering destination planning, marketing strategy, visitor management and sustainable development, with considerably longer extended responses and an expectation that candidates evaluate business decisions. Data handling and stimulus discipline transfer unchanged from the IGCSE. Sustained argument has to be built. Ask whether the group actually ran in the current year, because a small Year 12 cohort is harder to timetable than a Year 10 option block.

How many 0471 sessions a week does a Dubai student need?+

One weekly session of sixty minutes suits most students through Years 10 and 11, provided the student writes between sessions. In an applied subject improvement comes from producing stimulus-anchored answers rather than from contact hours, so a second weekly session with nothing written in between usually adds cost rather than marks. Families commonly move to two sessions in the final eight to twelve weeks, with one spent writing under timed conditions and the other on the marking. A short case-study block during a school holiday is often better value than either.

Will a 0471 tutor come to our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, as that service exists only in India. Travel and Tourism sessions run one-to-one over live video, with stimulus material and the student's own written answers screen-shared so both sides annotate the same page. For this subject the trade is clearly favourable. 0471 is taught in a minority of Dubai schools, so specialists are few, and filtering an already small group by who can reach one address in traffic would usually mean not getting a 0471 specialist at all.

When are 0471 exams held, and when do entries close?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and the entry deadlines sit months before the papers. For a June sitting the entry closes in the spring, roughly four months before the first paper, forecast grades follow some weeks later, and results reach the centre on Cambridge Direct in August; November shifts the whole sequence so that results land in January. Take your own dates from the school, because Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who use the wrong zone timetable.

How does a 0471 tutor help with customer-care questions?+

By replacing general good advice with a rule. Any answer about an organisation named in stimulus material must use that organisation by name and respond to the detail the stimulus supplied. If the material describes complaints about check-in queues at peak arrival times, the answer addresses check-in queues at peak arrival times rather than the importance of friendly staff. A second habit separates what the organisation should do from why it matters commercially, since many questions want both and candidates supply one. Five short stimulus items in a session covers it.

Is it worth starting 0471 support in the final term?+

Yes, because the available marks in this subject sit in technique rather than in content, and technique moves faster than knowledge. A final term can realistically fix the adjective habit, install stimulus discipline, teach the trend-plus-figure data answer and build three judgement paragraphs. What it cannot do is construct a case study from nothing or recover a content area never taught. Nobody can promise a grade from a final term, and a provider who does should be treated with real scepticism. A marked stimulus answer in week one tells you which problem you have.

Send one destination answer

The quickest diagnostic in this subject takes four minutes. Ask your child to describe the appeal of a destination they know in five sentences, then count the adjectives and count the named features. If adjectives outnumber features, you have found the first session and it is a short one. Send the syllabus code, the series and the last marked paper, take the free trial lesson, one per subject with no payment details taken beforehand, and the hour will produce a stimulus answer marked on screen rather than a conversation about the industry.
