Cambridge IGCSE Sociology 0495 Home Tutor in Dubai

Parents looking for a Cambridge IGCSE Sociology 0495 home tutor in Dubai usually want an answer to one question: can someone show me this is working? This page answers it with paperwork rather than promises. Every session leaves a dated artefact behind, a marked timed answer, a reworked plan, a tally of command words handled correctly. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so an Umm Suqeim or Mirdif slot starts when it says it will.

  • Every session ends with a dated artefact you can open and read
  • Cambridge 0495 command words tracked by name, not by general impression
  • One free trial lesson per subject, with no payment details taken beforehand
  • One-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, never at a Dubai address

What an evidence file for Cambridge IGCSE Sociology looks like

Cambridge IGCSE Sociology 0495 is a two-year course that most Dubai schools begin in Year 10 and examine at the end of Year 11. It is not a soft option. Students arrive expecting opinion and discussion and find a subject with a technical vocabulary, several substantive topic areas, a research-methods strand that behaves more like a science paper than an essay subject, and extended-response questions that reward evaluation over recall. A child who talks fluently about family life in Dubai can still score poorly, because the paper does not ask what they think.

That gap between articulate and assessed is why parents start looking for a tutor. It is also why asking how it is going produces nothing useful. Sociology sets no spelling test and no sums you can check over dinner. Progress shows up only in the shape of a written answer: whether the student defined the term, whether a named perspective or named study appeared, whether a counter-argument arrived before the conclusion. None of that is visible to a parent unless somebody writes it down and keeps it.

So this page is built around the paperwork. A session on 0495 should leave behind something dated that you can open: a timed answer carrying marks and margin notes, a plan reworked after feedback, a running list of command words the student has now handled correctly and the ones still going wrong, and a short note saying what changed and what comes next. Over ten or twelve weeks that becomes a file. A file is the only honest way to separate real improvement from growing familiarity with a tutor, and it is the thing a family can take to a school parents evening instead of a feeling.

Delivery is online. IB Gram matches Dubai families with one-to-one tutors who teach over live video and screen-share the student's own script so both sides annotate the same page. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. That is a deliberate trade rather than a limitation. A small-entry subject like 0495 has very few specialist teachers in any single emirate, and narrowing the search to people who can drive to Jumeirah by five on a Tuesday means choosing geography over subject knowledge.

What follows sets out what the Dubai market charges in AED and who charges it, the command words that decide marks, the topics where candidates here lose them, a twelve-week reading of the evidence file, the Cambridge series calendar counted backwards from the exam, the academic-honesty line a sociology tutor may not cross, and the KHDA context your child's school works inside. Every figure is attributed and dated, because an unsourced number helps nobody making a decision about their child.

At a glance

  • Artefacts, not adjectives: marked scripts and dated plans rather than progress adjectives
  • Command words logged individually, so a weakness has a name you can say out loud
  • Market rates quoted in AED with the provider who published them and the month
  • Cambridge entry and results milestones counted backwards from the series your school enters
  • A plain statement of what a tutor may and may not touch in assessed sociology work
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Sociology sits inside a wider Cambridge pathway, and the decision a Dubai family makes at 16 changes what the 0495 year needs to deliver. These are the programmes most often in play around a 0495 candidate in this emirate.

Cambridge IGCSE

The two-year Cambridge Upper Secondary qualification sat by the largest curriculum group in Dubai's private schools. Sociology 0495 is usually an option block choice taken alongside a humanities subject and a language. Assessment is by written examination at the end of the course, which places the whole grade on a short window and makes timed-answer practice during the year the single highest-value activity a tutor can run.

Dubai schools enter candidates in either the June or the November series, and a few run both for different cohorts. Because 0495 is a smaller entry than Mathematics or Biology, a school may have one teacher covering it, and that teacher may also carry Geography or History. Independent one-to-one support is often the only route to a second expert reading of a student's written answers.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The other British-track option used by Dubai schools. Pearson codes differ from Cambridge codes, the paper structures differ, and the mark scheme language differs. A student revising from the wrong board's past papers will practise questions that are never asked. Confirming the board and the exact code on the school entry form before any revision begins prevents the most expensive mistake available in a Year 11 year.

Pearson runs International GCSE in May or June and November each year. Its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Those dates matter to a Dubai family planning a retake inside one academic year.

Cambridge International AS & A Level

The usual destination for a Dubai student who enjoys 0495. A Level Sociology asks for sustained argument across longer essays, more theory by name, and a genuine grasp of methodological debate rather than a list of strengths and limitations. The habits that earn a strong IGCSE grade, define, apply, evaluate, conclude, are the same habits scaled up, which is why building them properly at 16 pays twice.

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, a student must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or above, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among those five. Verify current wording with the Ministry before relying on it.

IB Diploma Programme

Dubai has a substantial IB sector, and some 0495 students move into the Diploma rather than A Level. There is no direct IB equivalent of IGCSE Sociology; the nearest routes are Global Politics, Psychology, or Social and Cultural Anthropology where a school offers it. The research-methods work in 0495 transfers directly into the Diploma internal assessment culture, where method choice has to be defended rather than asserted.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places. Six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6%. A family choosing between an A Level and a Diploma route in Dubai now has more supply than in previous years, and the subject a child enjoys at 16 is worth weighing against what each sixth form actually timetables.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A 0495 evidence file is organised by topic area, because that is how the syllabus is organised and how marks are reported back. These are the strands a Dubai tutor works through, and what each one tends to need.

Theory and methods

Underpins every other topic

The perspectives, functionalism, Marxism, feminism and interactionism among them, plus the structure and action debate. Students who learn these as labels write unusable answers. Students who learn them as positions that predict what a sociologist would say about a family, a school or a newspaper can apply them anywhere on the paper.

Research methods and evidence

Technical strand, heavily weighted in practice

Questionnaires, structured and unstructured interviews, observation, experiments, official statistics and documents, with sampling, reliability, validity, representativeness and ethics attached to each. This strand behaves like a science paper: terms have fixed meanings and marks go to precision, not to fluency.

Culture, identity and socialisation

Foundation topic

Primary and secondary socialisation, agencies of socialisation, norms, values, roles and status, nature against nurture. Dubai students have unusually rich material here because many live across two or three cultural settings, and the examiner rewards a specific example far above a general observation.

Social inequality and stratification

Core topic

Class, gender, ethnicity and age as sources of inequality, social mobility, poverty and life chances. The trap is description. A question on inequality rarely wants a list of differences; it wants a sociological explanation of why the difference persists and a judgement about which explanation holds up.

Family and household change

Core topic

Family types, changing patterns of marriage, divorce and child-rearing, functions of the family, and critiques of each. Candidates lose marks by writing about their own household as though it were evidence. The fix is to name the pattern, name who argues about it, and then use the personal example as illustration.

Education

Core topic

The functions of education, in-school and out-of-school factors in achievement, the hidden curriculum, labelling and setting, and the relationship between education and work. A Dubai candidate can use a private-school system with 17 curricula as a live case, provided the claim stays sociological rather than anecdotal.

Crime, deviance and social control

Core topic

Definitions of crime and deviance, formal and informal social control, explanations of offending, and the problems of measuring crime. Measurement is where most marks sit: a student who can explain why official statistics under-record offences has a point to make in several different questions.

Media

Core topic

Ownership and control, representation, audience effect debates and new media. The common error is to argue effects as though they were proven. The mark goes to the student who sets out a position, supplies the counter-position, and then says which is better supported and why.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every 0495 request from a Dubai family. All three run over live video, and all three produce the same kind of dated record.

Weekly one-to-one across the course

A fixed sixty or ninety minute slot through Years 10 and 11, running alongside the school scheme of work. This is the format where an evidence file is worth most, because the comparison that matters is a timed answer in October against a timed answer in February on the same topic.

  • Same weekday slot held across the term, agreed in Gulf Standard Time
  • One marked past-paper answer produced every two to three sessions
  • A running command-word log the family can read
  • A short written note after each session saying what changed

Exam-term evidence clinic

A shorter engagement in the eight to twelve weeks before a series, built entirely around marking. The student writes under timed conditions, the tutor marks against the published assessment wording, and the session is spent on the gap between the two. Content teaching happens only where the marking exposes a hole.

  • Timed answer written between sessions, marked before the next one
  • Error log grouped by cause rather than by topic
  • Two full papers under exam conditions in the final fortnight
  • A written handover note for the student to revise from alone

Holiday block before a series

Dubai's winter and spring breaks fall close enough to both Cambridge series to be useful. A block of consecutive sessions across a break can rebuild one weak topic area properly rather than patching it, and the evidence file shows whether the rebuild held when term resumed.

  • Three to five sessions in a single week on one topic area
  • Baseline timed answer on day one, repeat answer on the last day
  • Both scripts kept side by side in the shared folder
  • No new topics introduced during the block

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a 0495 home-tutor search in Dubai actually returns

A search for an IGCSE sociology tutor in Dubai returns five quite different products at five quite different prices, and the listings rarely say which one you are looking at. Market rates in Dubai as published in October 2026 run from roughly AED 45 an hour at the budget end to AED 650 for a premium named tutor, which is a fourteenfold spread for something described identically in the advertising. Knowing which category a quote belongs to is most of the work.

The in-home option carries a travel cost that is real whether or not it appears on the invoice. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, with the upper end reflecting distance as much as expertise. A tutor crossing from Al Barsha to Arabian Ranches at five in the afternoon is spending close to two hours on a sixty-minute lesson, and that time is priced in somewhere.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; lessons run one-to-one over live video and home visits are a service offered only in India. The table below sets out the five models side by side with the rates their own providers published and the month those rates were read, so the comparison is between sourced figures rather than impressions. The final column is the one this page cares about: what written record each model leaves behind. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this project publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, a currency no Dubai family transacts in. A rate you cannot see is not a rate you can compare, which is why the figures here carry both a provider and a month.

The evidence file: artefacts, dates and who keeps them

  • Timed answer: written to the clock, marked with marks visible
  • Plan: produced before writing, reworked after feedback, both versions kept
  • Command-word log: each verb named, with the date last handled correctly
  • Session note: one paragraph, written the same day, no adjectives
  • Everything dated and stored where the family can read it

An evidence file is not a report card. It is the raw material: the student's own writing, marked, with dates on it. Four artefact types do almost all the work. The first is a timed answer, written to the clock on a past question, marked against the published assessment wording with the marks shown rather than summarised. The second is a plan, written before an answer and reworked after feedback, which shows whether the student can now structure an argument without being walked through it.

The third is a command-word log. Sociology marks are released by the verb at the front of the question, and a student who can describe but cannot evaluate will plateau at a predictable grade regardless of how much content they learn. Logging each command word by name, with the date it was last handled correctly, turns a vague worry into a short list of things to practise. The fourth is a one-paragraph session note: what was taught, what the student produced, what changed, what comes next.

The file lives in a shared folder the family can open, not in the tutor's notebook. That matters for a practical reason. Tutors change, schools change, and a student who moves from Dubai to another emirate or another country mid-course should not lose two terms of diagnostic work. It also removes the awkward conversation about value, because a parent can see for themselves whether the October script and the February script are different pieces of writing.

03

Command words in Cambridge social-science papers and the marks they release

The verb at the start of a sociology question is an instruction about how many marks are available and what kind of writing earns them. Students who treat every question as an invitation to write what they know will score heavily on short definition questions and poorly on everything else, which produces the characteristic middling grade that frustrates families who can see their child understands the material.

The repair is mechanical and fast. For each command word, the student learns the shape of the answer rather than the content: how many points, whether a counter-argument is required, whether a judgement must be stated, whether an example is expected. Two or three sessions on shape typically move a script further than two or three sessions on content, which is why a tutor should diagnose before teaching. The definitive list of command words for the current syllabus sits in the 0495 syllabus document on cambridgeinternational.org, and a tutor should be working from the version that matches the student's exam year rather than an older one.

The table below sets out the pattern a Dubai tutor sees most often across Cambridge social-science papers, the error attached to each command word, and what a session actually does about it. Note that the fixes are different in kind: some are vocabulary, some are structural, and one is simply a timing problem disguised as a knowledge problem. A parent can use the same table without a tutor present. Ask your child to read a recent answer aloud and say which command word the question used, then say what that word required. A student who cannot name the instruction has found the problem, and it is a cheaper problem to hold than a missing topic.

COMMAND WORDS, THE ERROR THEY EXPOSE AND THE SESSION FIX
Command wordWhat the examiner is checkingThe usual student errorWhat a session does about it
Identify / GiveRecall of a named term or example, nothing moreWriting a paragraph where two words would scoreDrills answers to length; banks time for later questions
DescribeAccurate account of a pattern or processExplaining why, which earns nothing hereSeparates account from explanation on paired questions
ExplainA causal chain, stated step by stepListing causes without connecting themRewrites a list answer as a because-therefore chain
EvaluateArgument, counter-argument, then a judgementTwo sides with no judgement, or a judgement with no sidesBuilds a fixed four-move template, then removes the scaffold
To what extentA weighted conclusion, not a balanced oneConcluding that both sides have meritPractises conclusions that commit and justify the weighting
Using examplesA specific, named case applied to a claimA general observation about societyBuilds a bank of six named examples the student owns
04

Where 0495 marks are actually lost

  • Explaining when the question says describe, and the reverse
  • Assertions with no named position and no counter-position
  • Personal experience substituting for a sociological concept
  • Reliability, validity and representativeness used interchangeably
  • Time spent on low-tariff questions at the expense of high-tariff ones

Marks in sociology leak from a small number of recurring places, and almost none of them are gaps in knowledge. The largest is the description and explanation confusion described above. The second is the unsupported assertion: a student writes that the media causes violence, or that the family is in decline, with no named position and no counter-position, and the examiner has nothing to credit. Sociology awards marks for handling a debate, not for arriving at the right answer, and a student who does not realise that will write confidently into empty space.

The third is misuse of personal experience. Dubai candidates have genuinely interesting material to draw on, with households spanning several cultures and schools running under more than a dozen curricula in one city. Used as illustration after a sociological point, that material is a strength. Used instead of a sociological point, it is anecdote and scores nothing. The discipline is to name the concept first, attribute the argument, and only then reach for the example.

The fourth is research methods, where precision is everything. Reliability and validity are not synonyms, a representative sample is not simply a large one, and an ethical objection is not the same as a practical one. A student who blurs these loses marks in a strand that recurs throughout the paper. The fifth is timing: a long first answer that leaves ten minutes for a question worth three times as much. That one shows up clearly in a marked timed script and nowhere else, which is the argument for producing them regularly.

05

Twelve weeks, read week by week

The question behind every tutoring decision is whether the money is doing anything. Sociology makes that hard to see, because the first six weeks of competent teaching often produce no visible grade change at all. What changes first is the shape of an answer, then the handling of command words, then the mark. A family that expects the mark to move in week three will conclude the tutoring has failed just as it starts working.

A twelve-week reading of an evidence file solves that by naming what should be visible at each stage. Week one produces a baseline: an unaided timed answer on a topic the student has already been taught at school, marked honestly. Weeks two to four produce plans rather than full answers, because structure is cheaper to fix than content. Weeks five to eight produce full answers with the scaffold progressively removed. Weeks nine to twelve produce whole papers under timed conditions, and this is the first point at which a mark comparison means anything.

The table sets this out with what each stage can and cannot tell you, which matters as much as the artefact itself. A plan improving in week three is real evidence of progress. It is not evidence that the grade has moved, and a tutor who presents it that way is overselling. The honest version is that early artefacts predict and late artefacts measure. The twelve-week shape also fits the Dubai school calendar reasonably well. A block started in late September reaches whole-paper work before the winter break, and a block started after the break reaches it before the spring mock window, which is when most schools collect the evidence they later use for forecast grades.

Counting backwards from a Cambridge series

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Most Dubai schools enter the June series, and some use November for retakes or for cohorts on a different calendar. The decisive dates are not the exam dates. They are the entry deadlines, which sit months earlier and are set by the school rather than the family.

Put real numbers on that gap. A Dubai student sitting the June series has to be entered in the spring, and once the centre has submitted, the subject list is fixed. A student who decides in February that sociology is worth sitting has usually missed that June entry altogether and is looking at November instead, a full six months later. The exact deadline belongs to the centre rather than to Cambridge’s website, so ask the exams officer for it in writing and treat the statement of entry as the authoritative document. Where a Dubai school enters Pearson Edexcel, the same lag is visible in dates already published: the November 2026 International GCSE timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Two series a year, an entry window months ahead of each, and a result that lands roughly two months after the last paper.

One further detail is worth a parent's attention. Cambridge allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after working from the wrong zone timetable. A Dubai family should take the paper dates from the school's own exams officer, not from a timetable found online, and should check the current session dates on cambridgeinternational.org rather than relying on any date restated here.

Academic honesty in sociology: methods, data and whose words these are

Sociology invites a particular kind of boundary problem, because so much of the subject looks like discussion. A tutor can legitimately teach a student how an evaluation question is structured, question a weak argument until the student improves it, model an answer on a different question, and mark the student's own writing in detail. A tutor cannot supply sentences for the student to submit, improve a piece of assessed work to the point where the words are no longer the student's, or hand over a bank of prepared answers to be reproduced under examination conditions.

The line is easiest to hold when the artefacts are dated. If every answer in the file was written by the student at a known time and marked afterwards, there is nothing ambiguous about authorship. Problems arise with undated, co-written documents where nobody can later say which parts came from where. This is a practical argument for the evidence file as much as an ethical one, and it is the reason the marking happens after the writing rather than alongside it.

Some providers in this market sell completed assessed work outright. One researched competitor advertises finished Internal Assessments at a fixed price. For a student that is a malpractice exposure that can end a qualification, and no reputable tutor should go near it. IB Gram does not supply assessed work, does not sell model answers for submission, and does not reproduce syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes; those are published by Cambridge and should be obtained from cambridgeinternational.org or from the school.

08

KHDA, the Dubai school market and the subjects sitting alongside 0495

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. The scale is unusual: 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula, with the UK curriculum the largest group at 37% of enrolment and the International Baccalaureate at 7%. A 0495 candidate is therefore inside a crowded British-curriculum system where option blocks are set by timetable rather than by demand.

Fees are part of the planning picture. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion. For a family budgeting tuition alongside school fees, that is a known quantity for one year, which is more than can be said for most inputs.

Alongside the licensed international curriculum, Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools, with KHDA requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and any different or additional content needs prior Ministry of Education permission. A 0495 student is carrying these subjects as well, and a realistic weekly plan has to account for them.

Getting started, and what happens when no 0495 specialist is free

The honest version of getting started has four steps and one disclosure. The four steps are: tell us the board and the code from the school entry form, the series the school is entering, and the last mark the student actually received; take a free trial lesson, one per subject, with no payment details taken beforehand, which ends with a marked piece of the student's writing; agree a twelve-week plan naming the artefacts it will produce; and then read the weekly note. If the note is empty, the tutoring is not working and the conversation should happen in week three rather than week ten.

The disclosure is about availability. Sociology 0495 is a small entry compared with Mathematics or the sciences, and the number of tutors in the UAE who have taught it to examination is correspondingly small. On a week when no UAE-based 0495 specialist has a slot, we will say so rather than substitute a general humanities tutor and hope. The alternatives we would put to you are a specialist in another time zone whose availability fits a Dubai evening, a start date two or three weeks out, or a shorter diagnostic engagement now with the full plan beginning when a specialist frees up.

What we will not do is place a tutor who has never taught the syllabus, because in a subject where marks turn on command-word handling and methodological precision, a strong generalist produces confident answers that score in the middle. The evidence file makes that visible within four weeks, which is uncomfortable for everyone involved. Saying no at the start is cheaper for the family than discovering it in February.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Online delivery means the area a Dubai family lives in no longer limits the tutor pool, but it still shapes when a session can realistically start. These are the patterns that matter for scheduling a 0495 slot.

Jumeirah

Short school runs to several British-curriculum schools, so a 4.30pm start is usually feasible on weekdays. Families here often have a sibling in a different school with a later finish, which is the real constraint on a fixed weekly slot.

Umm Suqeim

Villa community with heavy after-school activity schedules. A 0495 session tends to land better at 6.30pm or at the weekend than immediately after school, when a student is still carrying the day.

Al Barsha

Dense school cluster and correspondingly dense traffic between 2pm and 4pm. Online delivery removes that window entirely, which is the single biggest practical difference from a tutor travelling in.

Dubai Marina

Apartment living with limited quiet study space. A screen-shared session needs a door that closes; families here often set up at a dining table and use headphones, which works provided the microphone is not in a shared corridor.

Arabian Ranches

A long commute to much of the city, so in-home tutoring here carries the steepest travel premium in the market. Online removes the premium and widens the pool to specialists who would never make the drive.

Mirdif

Mixed curriculum catchment, with students in British, Indian and American schools in the same street. A tutor needs the exam board confirmed before the first session, because assumptions based on the neighbourhood are frequently wrong.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer schools with newer cohorts, which often means a smaller 0495 entry and fewer peers to revise with. One-to-one support substitutes for the study group a larger subject would have supplied.

Jumeirah Village Circle

A wide spread of school destinations across the city and consequently variable finish times. Weekend sessions hold more reliably here than weekday evenings during the exam term.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Barsha

The densest British-curriculum belt in Dubai. Most schools here run IGCSE in Years 10 and 11 before splitting into A Level or the IB Diploma, and social-science option blocks are usually set in Year 9, which is when a family should check whether Sociology is actually on offer.

  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Jumeirah College
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Dubai College
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School
  • Safa British School

Mirdif, Dubai Hills and the southern corridor

A newer and more mixed belt where cohorts are smaller and option subjects more likely to be capped by numbers. Families here are the ones most often told a subject cannot run, and private one-to-one study is sometimes the only route to sitting it as a private candidate.

  • Hartland International School

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai curriculum landscape only. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or formal connection with any school named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the three facts that matter

The board and syllabus code from the school entry form, the series the school is entering, and the most recent real mark with the paper it came from. Those three facts settle more than a long conversation about learning styles, and they stop a tutor revising from the wrong board's past papers.

  2. 02

Take a trial that produces something

One free trial lesson per subject, with no payment details taken beforehand. It ends with a short piece of the student's own writing, marked, with the marks visible. That marked page is the baseline for everything afterwards and tells you more about the tutor than any introduction.

  3. 03

Agree a plan with artefacts named in it

A twelve-week plan that says which weeks produce plans, which produce full answers, and which produce whole timed papers. A plan that promises improvement without naming what will be written down is not a plan, and it cannot be checked by anyone in week six.

  4. 04

Read the weekly note, not the mood

One paragraph after each session: what was taught, what the student produced, what changed, what comes next. Two minutes of reading a week. If three consecutive notes say the same thing, raise it with the tutor rather than waiting for a report.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates are quoted with their source and month

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider that published it and the month it was read. Those are market rates, not an IB Gram price list. For our own pricing, the consultation and the trial lesson are the honest route, because the number depends on level, format and session length.

A specialist beats a short drive

Restricting a 0495 search to tutors who can reach a Dubai address in rush hour selects for postcode rather than subject knowledge. Live video widens the pool to people who have taught the syllabus to examination, which for a small-entry subject is the difference between a specialist and a generalist.

The record belongs to the family

Marked scripts, plans, the command-word log and the session notes live in a folder you can open. Tutors change and families relocate between emirates; two terms of diagnostic work should not sit in somebody else's notebook.

The honesty line is stated, not implied

A tutor teaches, questions and marks. A tutor does not supply sentences for submission or sell prepared answers to reproduce in an examination. We say that in writing because at least one provider in this market sells finished assessed work, and a student who buys it risks the qualification.

Availability is disclosed before you pay

If no UAE-based 0495 specialist has a slot this week, we say so and set out the alternatives. No competitor page researched for this project discloses a coverage limit, and several route UAE parents to numbers outside the country without saying where the tutor sits.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does a Cambridge IGCSE Sociology 0495 home tutor cost in Dubai?+

Market rates read in October 2026 put online one-to-one subject tutoring at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. In-home one-to-one sits higher because travel is priced in: Bestimate's Dubai table shows AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors AED 200 to 500. Budget freelance work starts far lower, from AED 45 to 65 with EdFlik. Premium named tutors reach AED 650, as BartyED publishes. Those are other providers' figures, not an IB Gram price list. Our own rate depends on level, session length and format, and the trial lesson is the sensible way to establish it.

Will a 0495 tutor actually visit our villa in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Sociology 0495 sessions run one-to-one over live video, with the tutor and student screen-sharing the same marked script. For this subject that is the stronger option rather than a compromise. The entry for 0495 across the UAE is small, so the pool of tutors who have taught it to examination is small, and filtering that pool further by who can reach your address during Dubai rush hour usually means accepting a generalist instead of a sociology specialist.

What evidence will I see after the first four 0495 sessions?+

Four things, all dated. An unaided timed answer from week one, marked with the marks shown rather than summarised, which is the real baseline. Two or three answer plans produced before writing and reworked after feedback, kept in both versions so the change is visible. A command-word log naming which verbs the student now handles correctly and when each was last checked. And four short session notes, one paragraph each. You should be able to read the lot in under ten minutes. What you will not see at four weeks is a moved grade, because structure improves before marks do.

How do I tell whether my child's 0495 grade is moving or just their confidence?+

Compare two timed answers on the same topic, written under the same conditions, several weeks apart, both marked against published assessment wording. Confidence rises early and means little on its own. A grade has moved when the later script shows structural change: the command word handled by name, a counter-argument present before the conclusion, a named example rather than a general observation, and the time distributed across questions in proportion to their marks. That is why the week-one baseline matters. Without it, every later script looks reasonable and there is nothing to measure against except memory.

Which Cambridge 0495 topics cause Dubai students the most trouble?+

Research methods first, because the vocabulary is technical and marks go to precision rather than fluency. Students routinely treat reliability and validity as synonyms and assume a representative sample simply means a large one. Social inequality is second: questions there want an explanation of why a difference persists, and candidates supply a description of the difference instead. Media is third, where students argue effects as settled rather than contested. Family and education feel easiest and are therefore where personal anecdote most often replaces sociological argument, which scores nothing however well written.

Does Cambridge IGCSE Sociology 0495 include a coursework component?+

Check the current syllabus document for your child's examination year on cambridgeinternational.org, and confirm the entry option with the school's exams officer, because Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle and components can change between versions. What does not change is the planning consequence. If the assessment is entirely by written examination, the whole grade rests on a short window and timed-answer practice through the year is the highest-value activity available. If a non-examined component applies to your cohort, its internal deadlines will sit well before the exam period and need to be in the plan from the start.

My child's school enters 0495 in the November series. Does that change the plan?+

It changes the calendar rather than the method. Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and entry deadlines sit months before the papers in both. For a November entry the work that matters happens across the Dubai autumn term, which collides with the busiest part of the school year, so the twelve-week block has to start earlier than families expect. Take the exact dates from the school's exams officer. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for your zone.

Can a 0495 tutor work specifically on the research-methods questions?+

Yes, and for many students that is the highest-return request they could make. Research methods is the strand where marks are decided by exact use of terms: questionnaires against structured interviews, reliability against validity, representativeness against sample size, ethical objections against practical ones. It behaves like a science paper inside an essay subject. A focused block usually runs as definition drills, then short application questions, then evaluation of a named method in context, with each stage producing a marked script so the improvement can be read rather than assumed.

Is my child's 0495 tutor legally permitted to teach privately in the UAE?+

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The official route is the MoHRE service page for private tutor licensing, which lists a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

Does 0495 count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

On the British track, students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. A sociology pass can form part of that count where it is among the accredited subjects submitted. Alongside the five, the requirement includes one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or above, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Confirm current requirements with the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority directly; IB Gram describes the process and does not perform or guarantee it.

How many 0495 sessions a week do Dubai families usually begin with?+

One weekly sixty or ninety minute session is the usual start, with written work produced between sessions. Sociology improves through writing rather than through contact hours, so a second weekly session without homework between them tends to add cost rather than marks. Families move to two sessions in the eight to twelve weeks before a series, with one spent writing under timed conditions and one spent on the marking. During a holiday block, three to five consecutive sessions in a week on a single weak topic area work better than the same hours spread thinly across a term.

Can 0495 sessions move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan?+

Yes, and most families ask for it. School days shorten during Ramadan and evening energy shifts late, so a 4.30pm slot that worked in January is often unusable. The practical pattern is to move sessions to after Iftar, shorten them slightly, and reduce the written work set between them while keeping the frequency intact. Losing the rhythm entirely for a month costs more than a shorter session does. Because delivery is over live video, the change is a calendar adjustment rather than a renegotiation of travel time, which is one of the quieter advantages of online scheduling.

What happens to the 0495 evidence file if we change tutor?+

It stays with you, which is the point of keeping it in a shared folder rather than a tutor's notebook. A replacement tutor starts by reading the marked scripts, the command-word log and the session notes, which means the first session diagnoses rather than repeats. Without that file a new tutor spends two or three sessions rediscovering what was already known, and a family pays twice for the same information. The same applies if your child changes school, moves to another emirate, or leaves the UAE part-way through Year 11.

Is it too late to start 0495 support ten weeks before the exam?+

Ten weeks is enough to change how a paper is answered, which is usually where the available marks are. It is not enough to rebuild a topic that was never learned. The sensible shape is a hard baseline in week one, then command-word and timing work through the middle weeks, then whole papers under timed conditions in the final fortnight. Nobody can promise a grade from that, and a provider who does should be treated with real scepticism. What can be said is that structural errors are faster to fix than content gaps, and a marked baseline tells you within a week which problem you have.

Start with one marked page

The quickest way to find out whether Cambridge IGCSE Sociology 0495 support will help your child is to produce a single marked page. Send the board and code from the school entry form, the series the school is entering, and the last real mark. The trial lesson, one free per subject with no payment details taken beforehand, ends with a short piece of your child's own writing marked against published assessment wording. If that page tells you something you did not already know, the tutoring has a basis. If it does not, you have lost an hour and learned where the gap is not.
