Edexcel IGCSE Business 4BS1 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

A specification-matched Edexcel IGCSE Business 4BS1 tutor for students in Abu Dhabi, working on the two things that decide the grade: applying theory to the firm in the stimulus material, and getting the numbers right. Sessions are one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, which suits a Yas Island or Al Mushrif household far better than adding a car journey to an already full weekday.

  • Tutors teach the 4BS1 specification, not generic business theory
  • Case-study application drilled on real Pearson stimulus material
  • Break-even, cash flow and ratio work taught as examinable method

Why 4BS1 trips up students who understand business perfectly well

Business is the option subject most often chosen because it sounds manageable, and most often misjudged for the same reason. The content genuinely is accessible: a bright Year 10 can read about cash flow, marketing mix and economies of scale and feel entirely on top of it. Then the mock arrives and the marks are thin in places that make no sense to the family. The student knew the material. What they did not do was answer the question about the business in front of them, which is the thing Pearson is paying marks for.

Application is the whole game in 4BS1. The paper hands the student a short account of a specific firm, with figures, a sector, a location and a problem. A general answer about why marketing matters earns knowledge marks and stalls. An answer that names what this firm sells, uses the numbers given, and explains the consequence for this firm's cash position keeps climbing. Students almost never fail because they do not know what break-even means. They fail because they explain break-even instead of calculating it for the company in the extract and then saying what the result implies.

The second weakness is numerical, and it surprises parents who chose Business partly to avoid maths. Edexcel International GCSE Business expects calculation: break-even output and margin of safety, cash-flow forecasts, revenue, costs and profit, and a set of ratios used to judge performance. None of it is hard arithmetic. All of it is easy to lose marks on, because the follow-up question asks what the figure means for the business, and a student who has only memorised the formula has nothing to say at that point.

Then there is the writing. The longest questions ask for a recommendation or a judgement about a course of action for the named firm, and the mark scheme rewards a decision supported by the evidence in the extract, with a stated condition or risk. Students instinctively write a balanced list of advantages and disadvantages and leave the examiner to choose, which is precisely the structure that caps a script below the top band. It is fixable in a handful of marked attempts, and almost impossible to fix without any.

For Abu Dhabi families there is a practical layer on top. Business departments in the emirate's British-curriculum schools are often small, with one teacher covering several year groups, so line-by-line feedback on long answers is scarce. Add Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies alongside the licensed curriculum and a Year 11 week has very little slack in it. Lessons here run online over live video, which removes travel at both ends and keeps a weekly slot alive through a term that gets progressively busier.

At a glance

  • Marks for application depend on using the firm, the sector and the figures given in the extract
  • Calculation is examinable: break-even, margin of safety, cash flow, profit and ratios
  • Recommendation questions want a supported decision, not a two-sided list
  • Assessment is entirely by written examination, with entries in two series a year
  • Delivery is one to one over live video; IB Gram does not visit homes in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Business sits inside a longer commercial route, and the sensible tutoring plan depends on where your child is in it. These are the stages at which families in Abu Dhabi most often ask for help, and what changes at each.

OPTIONSAges 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9 option choice

The point at which Business, Economics, Accounting and sometimes Commerce compete for the same slot. Choosing badly costs two years, and the usual mistake is picking on perceived difficulty rather than on how the student writes. A single session using one past extract from each subject shows a family more than a school options evening can.

Abu Dhabi schools vary in which commerce subjects they can staff, so the real option list is narrower than the specification catalogue suggests. Ask the head of department which codes were entered last year rather than which subjects appear in the prospectus; small departments drop and add options between cohorts.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business

The qualification on this page. Content spans business activity and external influences, people in business, finance, marketing and operations. Assessment is written only, with stimulus material about real or realistic firms, calculation questions, and extended questions asking for a justified recommendation. Grades are reported on the 9-1 scale under the current specification.

In the emirate, 4BS1 is frequently taken alongside Mathematics A and English Language A, with Economics or ICT filling the final option. Students who later move to an IB sixth form find Business Management familiar in content and completely different in assessment, so the writing habits built now are the part that transfers.

IALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International AS and A Level Business

The direct continuation. The step up is in the length of evaluation and the expectation that a student handles unfamiliar quantitative data without prompting. Students who scored well at IGCSE through recall alone struggle in the first term, because A Level marks reward the reasoning rather than the terminology.

Several Abu Dhabi sixth forms run International A Level Business or Economics, and UAE universities publish their own subject requirements for business and finance degrees. Check the current entry criteria on the university's admissions pages directly, since requirements change year to year and a tutor's summary is not a source.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Business Management

The alternative route at the emirate's IB schools. It adds an internal assessment based on a real organisation, which means research and referencing become part of the grade. Strong 4BS1 students adapt quickly on content and need specific help with the internal assessment format, which has no IGCSE equivalent.

Abu Dhabi has a well-established group of IB schools alongside its British-curriculum sector, and moving between the two at sixteen is common. Where that move is planned, a Business tutor can start building research and source-handling habits in Year 11 so the first DP term is not spent learning how to reference.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE subjects most often paired with Business in Abu Dhabi, with the code schools enter and the part of each course that generates tutoring requests.

Business (4BS1)

Single tier, 9-1

Written assessment only, covering business activity and influences, people, finance, marketing and operations. The pressure points are application to the firm in the extract, the calculation set, and extended questions that want a justified recommendation rather than a balanced list of points.

Accounting (4AC1)

Single tier, 9-1

The closest companion subject and the one most often underestimated. Accounting marks are awarded for format, labelling, dates and workings as well as for the final figure, so a student used to writing explanations in Business has to learn a far more exact style of answer.

Economics (4EC1)

Single tier, 9-1

Shares vocabulary with Business and rewards the opposite instinct: generalisable theory and traced chains of reasoning rather than application to one named firm. Students taking both need the two answer shapes kept deliberately distinct, which is a recurring job in sessions.

Mathematics A (4MA1)

Foundation and Higher tier

Supplies the arithmetic Business assumes: percentages, ratio, averages and reading graphs. Foundation-tier students often need ratio and percentage change secured before Business ratio analysis stops costing marks, which is a short, well-defined piece of work.

ICT (4IT1)

Single tier, 9-1

Half of the qualification is a practical examination worked on provided files, including spreadsheet modelling that mirrors the cash-flow and break-even work in Business. The two reinforce each other usefully, though the practical paper needs its own timed rehearsal under exam conditions.

English Language A (4EA1)

Single tier, 9-1

Business long answers and 4EA1 extended writing reward the same discipline: a clear claim, evidence used rather than mentioned, and a developed consequence. Where Business scripts show knowledge in disorganised paragraphs, work on structure tends to lift both subjects at once.

Geography (4GE1)

Single tier, 9-1

Overlaps with Business on data response, case studies and writing about change over time, including industrial location and development. Students taking both can be taught one method for handling an unseen source, which saves time in the Year 11 revision period.

Computer Science (4CP0)

Single tier, 9-1

A frequent fourth option, with a written principles paper and a practical programming examination. It is the least self-teachable subject in the option block, and families often ask about it in the same enquiry as Business because both receive limited timetabled support.

History (4HI1)

Single tier, 9-1

The other extended-writing option in most Abu Dhabi option blocks. History rewards weighted argument about causation; Business rewards a decision about what a firm should do next. Keeping the two conclusions styles separate is worth one explicit session for students taking both.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover nearly every Business request from the emirate. All are delivered one to one over live video, with stimulus material annotated on a shared screen and written work returned marked.

Weekly application practice

The standard term-time plan for Year 10 and early Year 11. Each session takes one piece of Pearson stimulus material, works through the application discipline on it, and ends with a timed question set as homework. The habit being built is reading the extract for usable detail before writing anything at all.

  • A different firm and sector in the stimulus material each week
  • Annotation routine practised until it takes under three minutes
  • One timed long-answer question marked and returned every fortnight
  • Calculation drilled in short bursts rather than in one long block

Numbers-first intensive

For students whose scripts show strong writing and weak quantitative work, which is a common and easily diagnosed split. Four to six sessions covering break-even and margin of safety, cash-flow forecasting, revenue, costs and profit, and the ratio set, each one taught as a method and then as an interpretation.

  • Each calculation practised in the exam's own question format
  • Interpretation drilled separately: what the figure means for this firm
  • Common slips catalogued, including units, time periods and per-unit versus total
  • Short, frequent retrieval rather than a single marathon session

Resit and November-series support

For students repeating a paper in the November series or entering late after a transfer. The plan starts from the previous script where one is available, because a resit is the one situation where the exact pattern of lost marks is already documented and should not be guessed at.

  • Previous paper reviewed question by question before any teaching
  • Only the topics that actually lost marks are rebuilt
  • Full papers sat under timed conditions from the third session onwards
  • Pacing plan rehearsed, since resit candidates often ran out of time first time

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What a 4BS1 tutor in Abu Dhabi spends the first three sessions doing

The first three sessions of Edexcel IGCSE Business tutoring are diagnostic, and they are not spent teaching content. Session one takes a past stimulus extract and asks the student to read it aloud and say what is usable: what the firm sells, who it sells to, what has changed, what the figures show, and what problem the extract is setting up. Most students have never been asked to do this deliberately, and the answer reveals immediately whether the application weakness is a reading habit or a writing habit.

Session two is a short timed set of questions across different mark tariffs, marked afterwards against the published mark scheme. The purpose is to separate three things that look identical on a report card: not knowing the content, knowing it but not applying it to the firm, and knowing and applying it but running out of time. Those three problems need completely different plans, and guessing between them wastes a term.

Session three is the first rewrite. The student receives their marked script with the mark-scheme wording beside their own, and rewrites the two weakest answers in the session rather than at home. Doing it live matters, because the tutor can see where the student stalls: often at the point where a general statement needs to become a specific consequence for the named firm, which is exactly the sentence the marks are attached to.

By the end of three sessions a family should have a written diagnosis they can read, not a reassurance they have to trust. That diagnosis names the problem, the target and the evidence that will show movement. If it turns out the student's issue is something tutoring cannot fix on its own, such as unmanaged exam anxiety or a timetable with no study time in it, that is worth saying early rather than after four months of invoices.

02

The 4BS1 content map, and where each topic area actually surfaces

Pearson organises International GCSE Business content into several topic areas covering business activity and the influences on it, people in business, business finance, marketing, and business operations. Assessment is written only. What matters for revision planning is that the topic areas do not arrive in neat blocks on the paper: a single extract about one firm can pull in marketing, operations and finance in consecutive questions, so revising in isolated silos leaves students unable to switch.

The practical consequence is that late revision should be organised around firm types rather than around chapter headings. A student who has worked through extracts about a manufacturer, a service business, a retailer and a start-up has met the same theory in four different contexts and can recognise which part of the specification a question is reaching for. A student who has revised chapter by chapter knows more and retrieves less.

External influences deserve particular attention for students in the Gulf, because the examples that come naturally to them are often better than the textbook ones. Exchange-rate movement, fuel and utility costs, import dependence, labour mobility and government policy are all live realities for firms operating here, and a student who can use a genuine local example with confidence writes more convincingly than one reciting a generic case. The caution is that the extract always wins: a local example supports the point, it never replaces the firm given.

Confirm the current topic structure, paper codes and timings against the live 4BS1 specification and sample assessment materials on qualifications.pearson.com, and confirm with the school which series and code your child is entered for. Schools occasionally run a transitional cohort on a legacy code, and a tutor working from the wrong version will drill the wrong answer shapes.

03

Application: the sentence where most 4BS1 marks are won or lost

  • Name the firm, its sector and what it actually sells in the first line of a long answer
  • Use at least one figure from the extract whenever figures are provided
  • Trace one consequence properly rather than listing four undeveloped ones
  • On recommendation questions, decide, justify from the extract, then state the risk
  • Keep local Gulf examples as support for the extract, never as a substitute for it

Application in Business has a recognisable sentence shape, and once a student can produce it reliably their marks move. The shape is: because this firm does something specific named in the extract, the consequence is a particular effect on a stated measure. Both halves are necessary. Students routinely produce the second half on its own, which reads as theory, or the first half on its own, which reads as a summary of the extract. The mark is attached to the join.

The reason this is hard has nothing to do with intelligence. Students are taught business concepts in class, and concepts are general by nature, so the instinct under exam pressure is to reach for the general version. Overriding that instinct requires practice with a pen in hand, not an explanation. This is why sessions are built around attempting and rewriting rather than around being taught: the student has to produce the specific sentence often enough that it becomes the default.

A second habit worth building is figure discipline. If the extract gives a cost, a price, a number of staff or a growth rate, the examiner has put it there to be used. Answers that ignore every number provided have told the marker that the student did not read carefully. Answers that quote a figure and then draw a consequence from it look exactly like the top band of the mark scheme, because that is what the top band describes.

Finally, recommendation questions need a decision. The mark scheme rewards a choice, justified by evidence from the extract, with an acknowledged risk or a condition under which the answer would change. A student who writes three paragraphs of balanced discussion and then declines to decide has written a good essay and a mediocre exam answer. Teaching that distinction explicitly, and then marking against it, is usually the single highest-value intervention available in this subject.

04

The quantitative half of Business that students skip until February

Business calculation is where confident students lose marks quietly. The arithmetic is simple enough that nobody treats it as a revision priority, and the questions are structured so that the calculation is worth a few marks and the interpretation that follows is worth more. A student who can compute break-even but cannot say what a thin margin of safety means for a firm facing a rent increase has banked the small half of the marks and left the large half on the table.

The recurring errors are consistent and therefore trainable. Mixing per-unit and total figures. Using monthly data in an annual formula. Forgetting that a cash-flow forecast carries a closing balance forward as the next month's opening balance. Treating profit and cash as interchangeable, which is the conceptual error most likely to wreck an otherwise strong answer about a firm's survival. Each of these takes minutes to diagnose from a marked script and a session or two to fix properly.

The method we use is deliberately boring: each calculation is practised in the exam's own question format, then immediately paired with an interpretation prompt, so the student never learns the formula in isolation. After a few weeks the calculation stops being the obstacle and the interpretation becomes the thing being taught, which is the right order. Spreadsheet work helps here, and students taking ICT 4IT1 alongside Business often find the two subjects reinforcing each other.

The table below lists the calculations that most commonly appear and what the follow-up question tends to ask. It is a revision checklist rather than a specification extract; always check the current assessment requirements on the Pearson site for the series your child is entered for.

Business 4BS1 or Economics 4EC1? A straight comparison for Abu Dhabi option blocks

This is the most common question we get from Year 9 families in the emirate, and the honest answer is that the subjects reward different students rather than one being easier. Business is concrete: a named firm, a decision to make, numbers to use, a recommendation to justify. Economics is abstract: a market, a mechanism, a diagram used as evidence, a chain of reasoning traced to a consequence. A student who likes deciding things prefers Business. A student who likes explaining why things happen prefers Economics.

There is a writing difference too. Business long answers are short and decisive, built around the extract. Economics extended answers are longer and more argumentative, and reward a weighed judgement with conditions. Students who write fluently but struggle to commit to a position often do better in Economics, where the discussion itself earns marks for longer. Students who write briskly and dislike open-endedness usually score higher in Business.

Taking both is a reasonable choice and plenty of students in the emirate do. The risk is cross-contamination: writing a Business-style answer in an Economics paper, which skips the mechanism, or an Economics-style answer in Business, which never mentions the firm. If both are taken, the two answer shapes should be taught side by side and deliberately contrasted early, rather than left for the student to separate under exam pressure in Year 11.

Neither subject is a prerequisite for a business or economics degree at most universities, and neither closes a door. Check the published entry requirements for the courses your child has in mind, including those at UAE universities, rather than relying on staffroom received wisdom. Where a student is undecided, one session with a past extract from each paper is the cheapest way to find out which style of thinking they actually enjoy.

The evidence pack: what a parent should receive, and how often

Business tutoring is easy to deliver badly and hard to audit, because an hour spent discussing a company is pleasant and feels useful. The only defence is a short, fixed cycle of documented evidence. Our default is a marked script every fortnight, a one-line target after every session, and a mark trend on repeated question types reviewed at week six. None of that is impressive on its own. Collectively it is the difference between knowing whether something is working and hoping it is.

What we deliberately do not supply is a predicted grade. A prediction from a handful of papers on a 9-1 scale is statistically meaningless, and it invites exactly the wrong conversation. What is meaningful is movement on a particular question type: application marks on long answers, or the interpretation marks that follow a calculation. Those are the figures in the tracker, and they move or they do not.

We also do not supply reproductions of board material. Pearson publishes the specification, sample assessment materials, past papers and mark schemes under its own terms; those are referenced and linked from the official site rather than copied into handouts. Besides the copyright position, working from the live site means the version is current, which matters in a subject where specifications are periodically revised.

At week six, the review is a decision point rather than a progress report. If the marks on the targeted question type have not moved, the honest options are a different tutor, a different plan, or an acknowledgement that the obstacle is outside the session. Carrying on unchanged because everyone is being polite is the most expensive outcome available, and it is also the most common.

What Business tutoring costs in Abu Dhabi, and how to compare two quotes

Most providers in this market will not publish a number, so here is the market as it stood in October 2026. Advertised online rates from low-cost platforms start around AED 33 to 52 an hour at Tutopiya and AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik, with the broader budget band running to about AED 150. Qualified subject tutors working online advertise from roughly AED 150, which is where Unitors lists IGCSE, rising to about AED 300. Specialist IGCSE and A Level tutors are quoted between AED 200 and AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing around AED 270 and premium examiner-led provision reaching AED 650 at BartyED.

In-home provision is priced differently because somebody has to pay for the driving. Bestimate's rate table for the market puts home visits around AED 180 to 350, independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to 500, and monthly in-home packages of four two-hour sessions appear at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Online monthly packages advertise around AED 799 for eight sessions. These figures belong to the providers named and were read in October 2026; they are not IB Gram prices.

Comparing two quotes sensibly means comparing what the hour contains. An hour of conversation, an hour of teaching with homework set, and an hour that includes a marked script with mark-scheme comparison cost different amounts to supply and produce different results. Ask any provider three questions: who marks the extended answers, against what, and what document the parent receives. The answers separate the market faster than the headline rate does.

For context on the wider cost picture, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year under the emirate's second economic incentives package. School fees are the dominant education cost in most households, and tutoring is a small fraction of it, which is worth keeping in view when deciding between one well-evidenced session a week and three cheap ones nobody follows up.

Who regulates your child's school, and why an option subject makes it relevant

Abu Dhabi private schools are licensed and inspected by the Department of Education and Knowledge, ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Dubai's equivalent is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education there. Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. ADEK is named by almost none of the tutoring content written for this emirate, which says a good deal about how much of it was actually written for Abu Dhabi.

This matters to a Business family in a specific way. Inspection reporting is public, and it is the only external account of a school's performance that is not written by the school. For a small option department, the inspection commentary on teaching quality in the subject area is more informative than a prospectus. Where a department is thin, outside support is not a criticism of the school; it is a sensible response to a staffing reality.

Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities also approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so curriculum approval and not merely inspection sits with the emirate regulator. Federally, private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. That federal baseline is the reason your child carries mandatory UAE subjects alongside the Edexcel timetable, and it is a real constraint on how many tutoring hours a week make sense.

On the tutor's own legal position, the rule is straightforward and worth asking about. Private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by any UAE regulator or examination board, and no page of ours should suggest otherwise.

Scheduling, Ramadan, and the honest position on home visits

A tutoring arrangement in Abu Dhabi usually fails on logistics rather than on teaching. British-curriculum schools in the emirate typically finish between 14:30 and 15:30. Add the drive from the island to Mohammed Bin Zayed City or Al Falah, add a sibling's activity, and the window for a Business session that is not conducted on an exhausted teenager is narrow. Sessions are therefore scheduled around the household rather than around the tutor, and because delivery is online over live video there is no travel on either side to accommodate.

Ramadan is planned for in advance rather than improvised. School hours shorten, family routines move later, and a weekly afternoon slot will not survive the month. The usual arrangement moves sessions to a post-Iftar time or shortens and reduces them for a few weeks, with an agreed catch-up pattern afterwards. Families who plan this in January keep their momentum. Families who do not tend to lose four weeks and start the summer run behind.

The summer break has its own effect for a student entered in a summer series: Abu Dhabi schools finish early enough that timetabled teaching can end before the last papers are sat, leaving a stretch where tutoring is the only structured teaching in the week. That period should be planned deliberately rather than discovered, and it is usually when the full timed papers get done properly.

On delivery, the position is stated plainly because vagueness here wastes a parent's time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Tutoring at a student's address is a service we run only in India, and no tutor will be sent to an Abu Dhabi address. UAE lessons are one to one over live video, with stimulus material annotated on a shared screen and written work returned marked. For a written, case-based subject like 4BS1 that costs nothing in teaching quality and gains a great deal in tutor choice, because the match is made on specification knowledge rather than on who happens to live nearby.

Where we tutor

Where our Abu Dhabi Business students live, and what that does to the timetable

Session timing is the most common reason a tutoring arrangement quietly stops working. These are the communities 4BS1 enquiries arrive from, with the scheduling constraint each one brings.

Al Mushrif

An established inner-city district with several long-running schools nearby and short school runs. The usual constraint is the number of after-school commitments competing for the 16:00 to 18:00 window rather than travel time itself.

Yas Island

Newer family housing with a high proportion of recent arrivals, so Business enquiries here often involve a student who started the course on another board. The first job is usually a specification gap map rather than exam polish.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Large mainland residential grid with longer journeys to the island schools, where an afternoon round trip to a tutor can consume more than an hour. Evening online slots from 17:30 are the pattern that survives a full term here.

Al Khalidiyah

Dense apartment living close to the Corniche, where visitor parking makes an in-home arrangement genuinely inconvenient. Families here tend to value a fixed, quiet half-hour of set-up over any particular day of the week.

Al Falah

Villa community towards the airport road with a long school commute for many households. Students arrive home late enough that a 16:30 start is unrealistic, and sessions are usually booked after dinner rather than before it.

Al Maryah Island and Al Zahiyah

A commercial and residential mix where many parents work locally and can supervise an early-evening session themselves. Business students here often want one longer weekend session rather than two short weekday ones.

Al Bandar and the Al Raha waterfront

Waterfront apartment communities adjacent to the Al Raha school cluster, with the shortest commutes in this list. The common request is a 16:30 start, which works here and almost nowhere else in the emirate.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

The Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor

The largest concentration of British-curriculum provision in the emirate and the source of most of our Business enquiries. Option blocks here are wide enough to offer Business and Economics in parallel, which is where families most often need help choosing between them.

  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi island

Older, well-established schools with smaller commerce departments. A Business cohort here may be a single class, which means the teacher's marking load is manageable but the range of ability in one room is wide and individual long-answer feedback is thinly spread.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Merryland International School

School names appear here only as context for the Abu Dhabi private-education market. IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership, endorsement or client relationship with any school, group or authority mentioned.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, the series and the last script

The three things that make a first session useful are the specification code the school entered, which series your child is sitting, and the most recent marked paper or mock. For 4BS1 the script matters most: the distribution of lost marks across tariffs is the diagnosis, and it saves a session of guesswork.

  2. 02

    Take the free trial session

Sixty minutes with a specification-matched tutor at no cost and with no card details taken. It includes a short timed question so there is something real to mark, and you receive the marked work plus a written note on whether the issue is knowledge, application or pacing.

  3. 03

Fix the slot and the evidence cycle in writing

Before weekly sessions begin we confirm the time in Gulf Standard Time, the school's topic order, the Ramadan arrangement, and what you receive and when. The default is a marked script every fortnight and a one-line target after each session.

  4. 04

    Work the application discipline weekly

Each session uses a different firm and sector in the stimulus material so the student meets the same theory in varied contexts. Calculation is drilled in short bursts and always paired with an interpretation prompt, never taught as an isolated formula.

  5. 05

Review at six weeks and change something if nothing moved

Six weeks gives enough marked scripts to see a trend on a targeted question type. A flat trend triggers a change of tutor or plan rather than a request for patience, because discovering in April that nothing moved is the expensive version of this conversation.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specification-matched, not subject-matched

A tutor who knows business and a tutor who knows what 4BS1 rewards on a recommendation question are different people. Application and judgement marks are where Business grades are decided, and board-specific technique is what earns them.

Application taught by attempting, not explaining

Sessions are built around attempting questions and rewriting them after marking, because the instinct to answer generally can only be overridden with a pen in hand. Explanation alone leaves the habit untouched.

The numbers are taken seriously

Break-even, cash flow, profit and ratio work are examinable and routinely under-revised. Each is practised in the exam's own format and then paired with an interpretation prompt, so the larger half of the marks is not left behind.

Evidence rather than reassurance

A marked script every fortnight, a one-line target each session and a mark trend reviewed at six weeks. No predicted grades from small samples, no invented statistics, and no claim that cannot be shown to you on paper.

Delivery stated honestly

Lessons for UAE families run online over live video. IB Gram holds no UAE regulator or examination-board approval, operates no UAE office, and does not send tutors to Abu Dhabi addresses. All of that is said before anyone pays.

Built around the Abu Dhabi week

Slots are set to real commutes from the island, Khalifa City and the mainland communities, with the Ramadan pattern and the early summer break planned in advance rather than handled as emergencies.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much does an Edexcel IGCSE Business 4BS1 tutor cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Market figures read in October 2026 show low-cost online platforms advertising from about AED 33 to 65 an hour, with the budget band reaching roughly AED 150. Qualified online subject tutors advertise from around AED 150 to AED 300, and IGCSE specialists between AED 200 and AED 450 and above. In-home visits run about AED 180 to 500 because travel is priced into the rate. Monthly packages appear at around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four in-home visits. Those are the providers' own advertised figures, not ours. What changes value most is whether the hour includes a marked script with mark-scheme comparison.

Is Edexcel IGCSE Business the same qualification as the old Business Studies course?+

It is the current Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Business, and schools and students still often call it Business Studies out of habit. The content will look familiar to anyone who studied the older course: ownership and objectives, people, finance, marketing and operations. What has changed in recent specifications across the board is the weight given to applying theory to the specific firm in the stimulus material and to handling quantitative data. If you are buying revision material second-hand or using an older textbook, check it against the current 4BS1 specification on qualifications.pearson.com, because practice questions written for a previous version can drill the wrong answer shape.

Does 4BS1 include any coursework or controlled assessment?+

No. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business is assessed entirely by written examination, with entries available in the May and June series and again in November. There is no portfolio, no controlled assessment and no practical component. The planning consequence is that every mark depends on exam-day performance, so timed practice under proper conditions is not optional preparation; it is the only rehearsal available. It also means a weak run of school assignments cannot drag the final grade down, and a strong run cannot lift it. Families sometimes find this reassuring and sometimes find it alarming. Either way it should shape how tutoring hours are spent.

How much maths does Edexcel IGCSE Business actually involve?+

More than most families expect when they choose it as the less mathematical option. Students need break-even output and margin of safety, cash-flow forecasting with balances carried forward, revenue, costs and profit, percentage change, and a set of performance ratios. The arithmetic itself is straightforward and well within Foundation-tier Mathematics A. The marks, though, usually sit in what comes after the calculation: explaining what the figure means for the firm in the extract. A student who has memorised formulas without practising interpretation will reliably bank the smaller half of the available marks on those questions.

My child writes general answers instead of using the case study. How do you fix that?+

By making them attempt and rewrite, not by explaining it again. The target is a specific sentence shape: because this firm does something named in the extract, the consequence is a particular effect on a stated measure. We start by having the student read an extract aloud and identify what is usable, then set timed questions, mark them against the published mark scheme, and have the two weakest answers rewritten live in the next session. Doing the rewrite in front of the tutor matters, because the stall almost always happens at the exact point where a general statement needs to become a consequence for the named business.

Which is the stronger option at Abu Dhabi schools, Business or Economics?+

Neither is stronger in the abstract; they suit different students. Business gives a named firm, figures and a decision to justify, and rewards concrete, decisive writing. Economics gives a market and a mechanism, and rewards abstraction, diagrams used as evidence and a weighed judgement. Students who dislike committing to a position often score better in Economics, where the discussion earns marks for longer. Taking both works well, provided the two answer shapes are taught side by side early, since writing a Business-style answer in an Economics paper quietly costs development marks. One session with a past extract from each paper is the cheapest way to decide.

Can my child take Business 4BS1 and Accounting 4AC1 together?+

Yes, and schools in the emirate do run both, but they are less similar than the names suggest. Business rewards explanation and judgement about a firm. Accounting rewards exactness: ledger formats, labelling, dates and workings all carry marks, and a beautifully argued answer earns nothing if the statement is laid out wrongly. Students who move between the two without adjusting style tend to under-perform in Accounting. If both subjects need support, we would usually rather provide two specialists than stretch one tutor across both, and we will say so rather than quietly bundling them into one match.

What evidence should I receive from a Business tutor each month?+

At minimum: two marked scripts with the mark-scheme wording set beside your child's own answers, a one-line target after each session, and a log of recurring calculation errors. At six weeks you should also see a mark trend on a repeated question type, because that is the only thing that shows whether the plan is working. What you should not receive is a predicted grade from a handful of papers, which is statistically meaningless on a 9-1 scale, or a verbal assurance that sessions are going well. If a provider cannot name the document you will receive and how often, that is the answer to your question.

Do Abu Dhabi schools use Edexcel or Cambridge for Business?+

Both are used across the emirate, and schools frequently choose board by subject rather than adopting one across the whole option block. The only reliable way to know is to ask the head of department which specification code was entered for the current cohort. It matters more than parents expect: the two boards cover comparable content but structure their questions differently, particularly on the longest answers, so a tutor drilling the wrong board's technique can leave a student well prepared for a paper they are not sitting. Confirm the code before the first session rather than after the first mock.

Do universities in the UAE take IGCSE Business seriously as a subject?+

Admissions decisions at this level rest on the overall profile rather than on one option subject, and Business is a perfectly respectable IGCSE. For the British track, reported UAE equivalency requirements refer to five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus Advanced Level or Advanced Subsidiary results. Specific degree entry requirements are set by each university and change, so check the admissions pages of the institutions your child is considering directly. Equivalency itself is a Ministry process that no tutoring provider performs, guarantees or speeds up.

What happens to our weekly Business session during Ramadan?+

It gets planned, not cancelled. School hours shorten during the month and family routines move later, so an afternoon slot that works in January will not hold. The usual arrangement is to move sessions to a post-Iftar time, or to shorten and reduce them for a few weeks with an agreed catch-up pattern afterwards. We set this out in advance with families who start in the autumn term, because the alternative is losing four weeks of momentum just as a summer-series cohort should be moving into timed-paper work. Online delivery makes the shift straightforward, since no travel has to be rearranged.

My child keeps confusing profit and cash flow. Is that a common problem?+

It is one of the most common conceptual errors in the subject, and it is worth fixing properly because it damages answers about whether a firm will survive. Profit is revenue less costs over a period. Cash is what is actually in the account when a bill falls due. A firm can be profitable and still run out of cash, which is exactly the scenario examiners build extracts around. We teach it with a short cash-flow forecast where a profitable month still produces a negative balance, because seeing it happen on a grid fixes it far more reliably than a definition does.

How long before the exam should Business revision switch to timed papers?+

About ten weeks before the first paper, and the date should be set at the start from the official Pearson timetable rather than chosen when someone starts worrying. Before that point, sessions teach and build the application habit. After it, sessions are built around complete papers and question-by-question mark breakdowns, with the full paper sat to the clock at least three times before the series. Pacing is the reason: students who work front to back routinely arrive at the longest, most valuable question with a few minutes left, which looks like weak understanding and is actually a timing failure.

Do you support students resitting Business in the November series?+

Yes, and a resit is the one situation where the diagnosis already exists. The previous script, or the breakdown the school can provide, shows exactly which question types lost marks, so the plan starts from evidence rather than from a fresh assessment. We review the paper question by question before teaching anything, rebuild only the topics that actually cost marks, and move to full timed papers early, because resit candidates very often ran out of time on their first attempt. Pearson's November International GCSE series and its published timetable are the fixed points to plan backwards from; confirm the entry route with the school.

Does ADEK publish anything useful about a school's Business department?+

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and publishes inspection outcomes, which is the only external account of a school's performance not written by the school itself. For a small option department the inspection commentary on teaching and progress in the relevant subject area is more informative than a prospectus page. Read it as context rather than as a verdict: a thin Business department often reflects staffing and cohort size rather than quality. Check the current reports on ADEK's own site, and treat anything a tutoring provider tells you about a named school's inspection result as secondhand until you have.

Book the diagnostic session, not a term

The useful first step for a 4BS1 student is not a block of lessons. It is one session with a past extract and a short timed question, marked properly against the published mark scheme, so you can see whether the marks are going on knowledge, application or the clock. That session is free, takes sixty minutes, needs no card details, and is run by a tutor matched to the Edexcel specification rather than to business in general. Lessons are delivered online over live video in Gulf Standard Time around an Abu Dhabi school week. If the evidence points somewhere tutoring cannot help, we will say so.
