IB DP Math AI HL Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Math AI HL tutor in Abu Dhabi who works from evidence rather than impressions: every Paper 1, Paper 2 and Paper 3 question your child attempts comes back marked against the IB command term that was used, and every exploration draft comes back annotated criterion by criterion. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so a 5pm slot after an Al Reem Island or Khalifa City school run is a normal booking rather than a favour.

Why Abu Dhabi AI HL families end up looking for a specialist

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level is the newest and least understood course in the Diploma. It was built for students who will use mathematics on real data — modelling, statistics, networks, optimisation — rather than for students who will prove theorems. That design decision has a consequence most Abu Dhabi families discover in the middle of DP1: AI HL is not a softer version of Analysis and Approaches HL. It is a 240-hour Higher Level course with its own hard content, and a student who chose it because the word 'applications' sounded gentler can be in genuine difficulty by the first mock.

The second thing families discover is that school feedback on AI HL is often thin, through no fault of the teachers. A Diploma cohort in an Abu Dhabi school may contain six AI HL candidates and thirty AA SL candidates. The AI HL group gets taught properly, but it rarely gets a dedicated Paper 3 clinic, because Paper 3 is a one-hour paper worth a fifth of the grade that only Higher Level students sit. Parents are then asked to judge progress from a termly report band and a sentence about effort.

This page is built around the opposite approach. Everything a tutor does with an AI HL student here produces a document you can read: a marked question with the lost marks circled and the command term named, a Paper 3 attempt with the scaffolding steps numbered, an exploration draft with letters A to E written in the margin and a mark out of twenty attached to each. You should not have to take anyone's word for whether tutoring is working. You should be able to open a folder and see it.

Abu Dhabi adds its own practical constraints. The emirate's Diploma students are spread across the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, Yas and Saadiyat, and the mainland communities, and the school day plus the drive home frequently puts the earliest realistic session at 4.30pm or 5pm. Because lessons run over live video, that geography stops mattering: the family in Al Reef and the family in Al Bateen get the same AI HL specialist in the same slot, without either of them paying for a tutor's travel time across Mussafah at rush hour.

The honest position on delivery: IB Gram does not send a tutor to a home anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service offered only in India. For Abu Dhabi the model is one-to-one online tuition over live video with a shared digital whiteboard, screen sharing of the student's own script, and a recording the student can rewatch before a test. The comparison table further down this page sets out what that trades away and what it buys, in AED and in hours.

What follows is the detail: the AI HL assessment model component by component, why Paper 3 behaves differently from Papers 1 and 2, the exploration rubric by criterion letter, the specific places AI HL candidates lose marks, what the Abu Dhabi tutoring market charges, who may legally tutor here, and how the AI versus AA decision interacts with university admission. No part of it requires you to buy anything to be useful.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Abu Dhabi schools licensed by ADEK run the full IB continuum, and a family searching for AI HL support is usually two years past the point where the Primary and Middle Years Programmes mattered. They still matter for diagnosis: an AI HL student who struggles with algebraic fluency is often carrying a gap that opened in MYP mathematics.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus the three core elements. Mathematics is compulsory, which is why the AA or AI and HL or SL choice is the single most consequential tick on a Diploma option form. AI HL sits in Group 5 and runs for 240 teaching hours over two years, assessed by three written papers in the May session plus one internally assessed mathematical exploration.

Abu Dhabi's Diploma cohorts are small relative to the emirate's total private-school enrolment, and AI HL groups inside those cohorts are smaller again. That is the structural reason specialist AI HL support is hard to find locally and easy to find online: a tutor pool drawn from one emirate is thin, a pool drawn from everywhere that teaches the Diploma is not.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Five years of conceptual, criterion-referenced study. MYP mathematics is assessed against four criteria rather than by paper marks, and extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 is the route that prepares a student for a Higher Level course. Students arriving in DP1 from standard MYP mathematics often meet AI HL statistics comfortably and AI HL algebra painfully.

Several Abu Dhabi IB World Schools run the continuum from PYP through to DP, so an AI HL student may have been in the same building for a decade. That continuity is useful for a tutor: the MYP criterion reports from two years earlier usually predict exactly which AI HL topic will cause trouble, and they are in the parent portal already.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-K to Grade 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led primary education organised around transdisciplinary themes, with mathematics taught through number, pattern, shape and data handling rather than as a separate drill subject. It builds the habit of explaining a method, which is the habit AI HL rewards and which exam technique then has to be rebuilt around command terms.

Families in Khalifa City, Al Raha and Saadiyat frequently have one child in PYP and another sitting AI HL papers. Online delivery makes that household workable: two different tutors, two different time slots, one calendar, no second car journey.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

The two-year pre-sixteen route many Abu Dhabi students take before switching into the Diploma. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 at Extended tier, or Pearson's 4MA1, covers most of what AI HL assumes on day one, with the notable exception of statistical inference and matrices, which neither syllabus touches.

The IGCSE to AI HL transition is the commonest diagnostic in Abu Dhabi, because a student arriving from 0580 Extended with a grade 7 has met almost no formal statistics. Hypothesis testing, correlation coefficients and transition matrices are genuinely new, not revision, and the first eight weeks of tutoring usually go there.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

AI HL support rarely stays inside one subject, because the students who choose it tend to pair it with sciences, economics or business and the same data-handling skills appear in all of them. These are the courses Abu Dhabi families most often add alongside an AI HL booking.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Five topic areas — number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, calculus — with HL adding matrices, eigenvalues, graph theory, complex numbers in modelling, and numerical solutions to differential equations. Technology is assumed throughout, so the examinable skill is interpretation rather than hand computation.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The proof-and-structure route. AA HL requires mathematical induction, complex number algebra, vector geometry and formal calculus, and its Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. Students sometimes switch from AA HL to AI HL in DP1; the switch is survivable, but the statistics content has to be built from nothing.

Physics

HL and SL

The commonest pairing with AI HL for students heading towards engineering or architecture. The overlap is graph linearisation, uncertainty and gradient interpretation, so a tutor working on AI HL regression is usually also fixing the physics data-analysis paper without being asked.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Structure and reactivity across six organising themes, with HL extending into mechanisms, spectroscopy, energy cycles and electrode potentials. Chemistry's quantitative work rewards exactly the significant-figure and unit discipline that AI HL examiners look for in modelling answers.

Biology

HL and SL

Unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, continuity and change. Biology's statistical tests — chi-squared, standard deviation, t-test — are the same tests AI HL assesses formally, which makes a combined session unusually efficient.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics, the global economy and development, assessed by papers and three internal commentaries. HL economics calculation and AI HL optimisation share a vocabulary, and students who can read a marginal-cost diagram usually read an AI HL rate-of-change question correctly too.

Business Management

HL and SL

Business organisation, human resources, finance and accounts, marketing and operations. The finance unit uses break-even analysis, investment appraisal and forecasting, which are AI HL topics wearing different clothes, and the research project rewards the same data-presentation care the exploration does.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Systems fundamentals, computational thinking, programming and one option topic, plus a solution to a real client problem. Graph theory and matrix representation sit in both courses, so AI HL students taking computer science often find the networks unit the easiest content of their Diploma.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay. Students who take AI HL have unusually good TOK material available to them, because questions about modelling, correlation, prediction and the limits of data sit directly on the mathematics knowledge-question syllabus.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent research piece in a Diploma subject. An essay supervised in mathematics and built on AI HL methods needs a genuinely researchable question; supervision here means process coaching and feedback on the student's own research, never supplying finished text.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every AI HL request from Abu Dhabi. All three run over live video; none involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address. The difference between them is the shape of the commitment, not the delivery method.

Weekly one-to-one across DP1 and DP2

A fixed slot held for the same student each week through both Diploma years. This is the format the evidence approach is built for, because it produces a continuous record: marked work every week, a visible mark trend, and an exploration that develops in dated versions rather than appearing finished in February. Most Abu Dhabi families start here at one session a week and add a second in the exam term.

  • Same tutor, same slot, held through both DP years
  • Marked work returned between sessions, not read aloud in them
  • A running mark log by paper and by topic
  • Session recordings available for revision

Exploration support blocks

A short series of sessions timed to the school's internal exploration deadlines rather than to the exam. The work is process coaching and criterion feedback on the student's own material: choosing a question that admits real HL mathematics, selecting an appropriate test, and reading the rubric as an examiner reads it. The mathematics and the writing remain entirely the student's.

  • Topic viability checked before weeks are wasted
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback with a mark estimate
  • Technology and notation conventions reviewed
  • Academic-honesty boundaries stated in writing to the family

Paper 3 and final-term intensive

A concentrated block in the weeks before the May session, built around timed papers rather than content delivery. Paper 3 gets separate treatment because it is a different examination skill: two extended problem-solving questions with heavy scaffolding, where the marks are lost by abandoning a part rather than by not knowing the topic. Sessions run two or three times a week during this block.

  • Timed Paper 1, 2 and 3 attempts under exam conditions
  • Scaffolding discipline practised question part by question part
  • Calculator workflow rehearsed until it is automatic
  • A written list of the three topics still costing the most marks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What an AI HL tutor in Abu Dhabi changes in the first month

In the first four weeks an AI HL tutor should produce three things: a diagnosis naming the specific topics costing marks, a marked set of past-paper questions showing where the loss happens inside each answer, and a realistic read on the exploration. Nothing in that list is an opinion. All of it is a document, and all of it should be in a parent's hands before a second month is paid for.

The diagnosis is built from the student's own work rather than from a bought diagnostic test. A tutor asks for the last two school assessments, the most recent mock if there is one, and whatever exploration material exists. Those scripts are then re-marked against the IB's published command terms, because the gap between what a student knows and what a student scores is usually a command-term gap. A question that says 'find' wants a value. A question that says 'hence find' wants a value derived from the previous part. A question that says 'comment on' wants a sentence about the context, and a correct number with no sentence scores nothing on that mark.

The marked set then gets sorted into two piles, and the sort is the whole point. One pile is content the student has not learned: transition matrices, say, or Euler's method. That pile is fixable by teaching and the timeline is predictable. The other pile is content the student knows and still loses marks on: rounding before the final step, a calculator left in radians, a chi-squared conclusion stated without reference to the significance level. That pile is fixable faster and is worth more marks per hour of work, which is why it gets attacked first.

By week four a family should be able to answer a concrete question: which three topics are costing the most marks, and what is the plan for each. If a tutor cannot answer that from written evidence after four sessions, the match is wrong and should be changed rather than persisted with.

02

The AI HL assessment model, component by component

AI HL is assessed by three written papers in the examination session plus one internally assessed mathematical exploration. The three papers are not three versions of the same test. Paper 1 is a set of shorter questions covering the whole syllabus, Paper 2 is a set of extended-response questions, and Paper 3 is two long problem-solving questions that only Higher Level candidates sit. The exploration is marked by the school against the IB's five criteria and then moderated externally.

Technology is assumed in every AI paper, which is a structural difference from Analysis and Approaches. An AA HL candidate sits Paper 1 without a calculator; an AI HL candidate is expected to have a graphic display calculator on the desk for all three papers. That changes what the examination actually tests. Computation by hand is largely gone, replaced by model selection, interpretation and the ability to explain what a number from the calculator means in the context of the question.

The practical consequence is that calculator workflow is examinable technique rather than a convenience. Knowing which regression model to fit, how to run a hypothesis test and read the p-value, how to find an intersection numerically, and how to store and recall exact values instead of retyping rounded ones are each worth marks across all three papers. A student who is fluent with the syllabus and clumsy with the device loses marks that have nothing to do with mathematics, and those are among the cheapest marks to recover in a tutoring programme.

The table below sets out the components and the dominant failure mode in each. Weightings are the IB's published course structure for Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level.

Paper 3 is the Higher Level discriminator, and it is coachable

Paper 3 exists only at Higher Level and carries a fifth of the grade in one hour. It presents two extended problem-solving questions, each heavily scaffolded: a context is set, a model is introduced, and the question walks the candidate through it in parts that build on one another. The mathematics inside any individual part is rarely harder than Paper 2 mathematics. The difficulty is structural, and that is exactly why it responds to practice.

The characteristic Paper 3 failure is abandonment. A student meets part (c), cannot see it, and stops — losing not only part (c) but parts (d) through (g), which depended on carrying a result forward rather than on having derived it. Examiners award marks for using a previous answer even when that answer was wrong, and students who have never been told this leave whole pages blank. Teaching a candidate to write down an assumed value, label it clearly, and continue is worth more on this paper than any additional content.

The second Paper 3 skill is reading the modelling instruction literally. These questions frequently ask a candidate to state an assumption, justify a choice of model, or comment on a limitation. Those marks are awarded for sentences, not for algebra, and students trained on Paper 1 habits write the algebra and skip the sentence. A tutor working through three or four past Paper 3 questions with a stopwatch usually finds the same two or three sentence-marks missing every time.

Because Paper 3 is HL-only, it is also the component a small school cohort is least likely to have drilled. An Abu Dhabi student in a six-strong AI HL class may have sat one timed Paper 3 before the mock. Four timed attempts with full marking is a realistic target for a tutoring block, and it is usually the single highest-yield intervention available in DP2.

04

The mathematical exploration, criterion by criterion

The exploration is marked out of twenty across five criteria, and the mark distribution surprises most families. Presentation and mathematical communication are worth four marks each; personal engagement and reflection are worth three each; the mathematics itself is worth six. A student who produces impressive mathematics in a badly structured document with no reflection can score eleven out of twenty, which at HL is a meaningful dent in a final grade.

Criterion E, use of mathematics, is where Higher Level candidates most often lose marks, and the reason is level rather than accuracy. The rubric asks for mathematics commensurate with the course. An AI HL exploration built on a linear regression and a correlation coefficient is accurate and insufficient. One built on a transition matrix with a steady-state interpretation, or a numerically solved differential equation with a sensitivity check, meets the level the criterion describes. Choosing the right question at the start is therefore worth more than polishing at the end.

Criterion D, reflection, is the cheapest criterion to recover and the most frequently neglected. Reflection means commenting on the significance of results, on the limitations of the model chosen, and on what a different approach would have shown — distributed through the work rather than parked in a final paragraph. Two or three substantive reflective comments at the points where a decision was made will usually move this criterion.

What a tutor may do here is bounded by IB academic honesty rules, and the boundary is not blurry. A tutor may discuss topic viability, point at a criterion and say which descriptor the current version meets, flag a notation convention, and ask the questions that make a student notice a gap. A tutor may not supply text, supply the mathematics, or hand back a rewritten version. The work must be the student's from the first question to the last page, and the school will ask the student to confirm exactly that.

05

Where AI HL marks are actually lost: a diagnostic list

  • Hypothesis-test conclusions written without the significance level or the context
  • Model chosen from the lesson rather than from the shape of the data
  • Values rounded early and then reused in subsequent parts
  • Degree and radian mode confusion in trigonometric modelling
  • Scaffolded Paper 3 parts abandoned instead of carried forward
  • HL-only matrix, network and differential-equation topics met only once

Mark loss in AI HL is patterned rather than random, and the pattern repeats across cohorts. Statistical inference accounts for the largest single block. Candidates run a chi-squared test or a t-test on the calculator, read off a p-value, and then write a conclusion that omits the significance level, omits the context, or states that the null hypothesis is 'true' rather than not rejected. The arithmetic is done by the device; the marks are in the sentence.

Modelling questions produce the second cluster. A question gives data and asks which model is appropriate, and the candidate fits the model the lesson was about rather than the model the data suggests. Exponential, logistic, sinusoidal and piecewise behaviours each have visible signatures in a scatter plot, and recognising them is a trainable skill that takes a handful of sessions. The same cluster contains unjustified extrapolation beyond the data range, which examiners mark as a limitation to be commented on, not ignored.

The third cluster is technical hygiene, and it is the one that most annoys families when they see it: a calculator left in radian mode for a degree question, a value rounded to three significant figures and then reused in a later part, a final answer given with no units, a graph drawn with no axis labels. These are not mathematical failures. They are habits, and habits change in weeks when someone marks them strictly and consistently rather than noting them in passing.

The fourth cluster is the HL-only content that small cohorts rush at the end of DP1: matrices and eigenvalues, graph theory algorithms, complex numbers used in modelling, and numerical solutions to differential equations by Euler's method. Students often meet these topics once, under time pressure, in the same term as the exploration. A tutor can re-teach them properly in the autumn of DP2, which is late but not too late.

06

What the evidence file looks like, week by week

A family paying for weekly tutoring should be able to see progress without asking for a verdict. The mechanism used here is a running file, and it has four parts: a mark log by paper and topic, a set of marked scripts with the lost marks annotated, a dated version history of the exploration, and a short written note after each session naming what was worked on and what the next session will fix. None of that is elaborate. All of it is the difference between a judgement and a record.

In weeks one to four the file fills with diagnosis. Old scripts come in, get re-marked against command terms, and produce a topic list ranked by marks lost rather than by syllabus order. The mark log starts with two or three honest baseline figures from the student's own school assessments, not from a flattering entry test. A parent reading the file at the end of week four should see which topics are being attacked and why those and not others.

From roughly week five to the end of DP1 the file should show movement in the mark log on the topics that were attacked, and a first exploration question that survives scrutiny. Movement will be uneven: technical-hygiene marks come back quickly, new HL content takes longer, and statistical interpretation improves in steps rather than smoothly. A flat log across eight weeks with no explanation is the signal to change something, and it is better to see that in writing in October than to discover it from a February mock.

In DP2 the file changes character. The mark log becomes a record of timed full papers rather than topic exercises, the exploration version history closes, and the session notes shift to the three topics still costing the most. By the final term a parent should be able to point at a graph of paper marks over time and at four marked Paper 3 attempts. That is what a claim of progress looks like when it is checkable, and it is what you should ask any tutor in Abu Dhabi to produce.

07

What AI HL tutoring costs in Abu Dhabi, and what moves the number

Published rates in the UAE tutoring market are scarce, so the figures below are drawn from providers that publish their own prices and from Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey. They describe the market, not IB Gram's own fee, and they are quoted as the ranges those sources state. Rates in Abu Dhabi track Dubai closely, with in-home visits running at the upper end because the emirate's distances are longer.

Three things move the number for an AI HL booking. Level is the first: Higher Level commands more than Standard Level across every provider that publishes a split, because the tutor pool is smaller and Paper 3 competence is a narrower qualification. Format is the second: an in-home visit prices the tutor's travel into the hour, and in a city where a cross-town trip at 4.30pm can take forty minutes each way, that is a substantial share of what a family pays. Timing is the third: the final term before the May session is when demand peaks and availability is tightest.

The format comparison is where online delivery earns its place rather than being asserted. For the price of one in-home hour at the specialist rate, a family can often book two online hours with a tutor chosen for AI HL Paper 3 specifically rather than for living within a twenty-minute drive of Al Raha. That is the actual trade: a wider specialist pool and no travel premium, against the loss of a person physically in the room. For a subject where the examinable skill is interpreting output on a screen, the trade is a comfortable one.

IB Gram does not publish a price list on these pages, because the right number depends on level, frequency and how long is left before the session. A free 45-minute trial lesson with the proposed tutor comes first, with no card details taken, and the fee is confirmed in writing before any paid session is booked.

ADEK, MoHRE and who may legally tutor in Abu Dhabi

Private schooling in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain is overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK inspects schools and publishes ratings, and those ratings are worth reading before a school transfer. What ADEK does not do is license individual private tutors. That sits federally.

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. According to u.ae the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students. MoHRE's own service page, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists a two-working-day completion time and is the route to apply.

Two consequences matter to an Abu Dhabi parent. First, individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are, in u.ae's words, subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone. Second, Abu Dhabi has an additional restriction: press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff may not provide paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries a similar bar. A family should verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it.

The practical reading: a tutor's own school teacher is the one person who usually cannot be hired, and a tutor who cannot discuss permit status is a tutor to ask more questions of. IB Gram holds no ADEK, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation and claims none; it matches students to independent tutors and states the delivery model plainly, which is online one-to-one video tuition for every UAE family.

09

AI or AA: what admissions actually expect

The AI versus AA question reaches a tutor in two different forms. In DP1 it is a live decision, and in DP2 it is a worry about whether the decision already made has closed a door. Both deserve a direct answer rather than reassurance, because the stakes are real and the information is published by universities rather than guessed at.

Engineering, mathematics, physics and most quantitative economics degrees at competitive universities state Analysis and Approaches, frequently at Higher Level, in their published entry requirements. Some will accept AI HL; many will not, and the ones that will not say so explicitly in their prospectus. Computer science varies by institution more than any other subject. Business, management, psychology, architecture, life sciences, medicine in most systems, and the social sciences broadly accept AI HL at Higher Level without comment.

The instruction that follows from this is dull and necessary: read the entry requirements for the specific course at the specific universities on the shortlist, on their own admissions pages, in the year the student will apply. That applies equally to UAE institutions and to overseas ones, and it applies before the option form is signed rather than after. A tutor can help a student read a requirement precisely, and should decline to summarise a requirement the university states for itself.

For a student already in AI HL and worried, the honest position is that AI HL is a full Higher Level mathematics course with 240 teaching hours and a demanding Paper 3, and that the overwhelming majority of degree programmes accept it. Where a specific target course requires AA, the options are a switch early in DP1, a different course choice, or a route via a foundation year. None of those is a tutoring decision, and nobody should sell tutoring as the fix for a prerequisite mismatch.

10

The Abu Dhabi school year, Ramadan and the May session counted backwards

  • Agree a viable exploration question before the end of DP1
  • Expect school exploration deadlines to collide with mock examinations
  • Plan the Ramadan schedule rather than pausing for the month
  • Confirm every IB session and results date with ibo.org or the DP coordinator
  • Book the final-term Paper 3 block before availability closes

Diploma students in Abu Dhabi sit the May session, which means the real calendar pressure arrives much earlier than families expect. Working backwards from the examination window rather than forwards from today is the planning habit that separates a calm DP2 from a frantic one, and it is the one thing no competitor page in this market seems to publish.

The fixed internal deadlines come first. Schools set their own exploration submission dates, typically with a first draft in DP2 autumn and a final version in the winter term, and those dates land in the same weeks as mock examinations. A student who starts thinking about an exploration question in January has lost the part of the process that Criterion C rewards, because genuine personal engagement takes time that a deadline has already consumed. The useful target is a viable question agreed before the end of DP1.

Ramadan sits inside this calendar and shifts earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. School hours shorten, energy patterns change, and families in Abu Dhabi routinely move tutoring to post-Iftar slots for the month. Online delivery makes that trivial to arrange; an in-home arrangement often cannot absorb it at all, because a tutor's evening becomes a sequence of long drives. Planning the Ramadan schedule in advance, rather than cancelling four weeks, protects the DP2 revision run.

For the examination dates themselves, go to the source. The IB publishes its session timetables and results dates on ibo.org, and a school's Diploma coordinator will confirm the exact windows and the EUR and remark deadlines for that cohort. Cambridge and Pearson publish their own IGCSE timetables separately — Cambridge notes that every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones and that using the wrong zone's timetable is the candidate's risk. No date on this page should be treated as a substitute for those sources.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's Diploma families are not concentrated in one district, and the drive between them at 3.30pm is the reason in-home tutoring is expensive here. Online delivery removes the journey from the price. These are the communities Abu Dhabi AI HL enquiries come from most often.

Al Reem Island

High-density towers with a large Diploma-age population and a single causeway route onto the island. A 4pm in-home slot here realistically costs a tutor ninety minutes of driving; an online slot costs nothing but the lesson.

Khalifa City

Villa communities feeding several IB World Schools, with school-bus runs that typically land students home between 3.15pm and 4pm. Sessions from 4.30pm onwards work; anything earlier collides with the bus.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

A compact corridor off the airport road with a concentrated international-school population. Families here frequently book two siblings in consecutive online slots, which is only practical because no travel sits between them.

Saadiyat Island

Low-density housing with long internal distances and a well-known Diploma cohort. The cultural-district traffic pattern makes early-evening in-home visits unreliable, so evening online slots dominate bookings from this area.

Yas Island

Mixed residential and leisure, with event traffic that can close off an evening without warning. A video lesson is indifferent to a race weekend, which is a genuine scheduling argument rather than a marketing one.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

Established island neighbourhoods close to several long-running private schools. Students here often attend school within fifteen minutes of home, which pulls the feasible session start earlier, towards 4pm.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Mussafah

Mainland communities where the commute home is longest and most variable. Later start times, typically 6pm or 7pm, are the norm for AI HL sessions booked from this part of the emirate.

Al Reef and Al Shamkha

Newer peripheral developments with growing Diploma numbers and very few resident subject specialists. This is where the gap between what a family can find locally and what it can find online is widest.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat

The older private schools on Abu Dhabi island and the newer Saadiyat campuses between them hold a large share of the emirate's Diploma candidates. Families should confirm which programmes and mathematics routes a school currently offers on ADEK's own school listing, because option blocks change year to year.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor

The mainland corridor running from Khalifa City through Al Raha carries a dense international-school population and the emirate's busiest school-bus network. AI HL students from this cluster are the ones most constrained by bus arrival times when choosing a session slot.

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Canadian International School Abu Dhabi

Al Ain and the wider emirate

Al Ain sits under the same regulator as Abu Dhabi city and has its own IB and British-curriculum schools. Students there face the thinnest local specialist market in the emirate, which is why online delivery matters more rather than less the further from the island a family lives.

  • Al Ain International School
  • Liwa International School
  • Emirates National Schools

Schools are named here as context for the Abu Dhabi education environment that families ask about. No affiliation, endorsement or relationship with any named school is implied, and programme offerings should be verified on ADEK's own school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the specifics, not the symptom

The useful message names the course as AI HL, the school, the year group, the two or three topics that hurt, where the exploration stands, and two workable weekly time slots. That is enough to shortlist a specialist rather than send a general maths tutor.

  2. 02

Send the last two marked assessments

A school assessment, a mock paper, or a returned exploration draft tells a tutor more in ten minutes than a conversation does in an hour. Marks matter less than the pattern of lost marks inside the answers, which is where the diagnosis comes from.

  3. 03

Meet the tutor in a free trial lesson

One 45-minute lesson over live video with the proposed tutor, with no card details taken and no obligation. It runs as a working session on a real question, not a sales call, and it ends with the tutor naming what the first month would target.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and start the record

A regular weekly time is confirmed on Gulf Standard Time and the evidence file opens: baseline marks from the student's own work, the ranked topic list, and a written note after every session. Rescheduling a single lesson needs 24 hours' notice.

  5. 05

Review the file at week four and week twelve

Two scheduled checkpoints where a parent reads the mark log and decides. If the log has not moved on the topics being attacked and there is no explanation, the right response is to change the tutor or the plan, not to wait for the next report.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specialist by course, not by postcode

A tutor is matched for Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, including Paper 3 experience, rather than for living a short drive from Khalifa City. Online delivery is what makes that possible for an Abu Dhabi family, and it is the practical argument for the format.

Marked work, not progress adjectives

Every claim about improvement traces back to a marked script or a mark log entry. Nothing on these pages reports satisfaction percentages or average score gains, because figures like that cannot be produced with an n, a date and a method behind them.

Academic honesty stated, not implied

The boundary on exploration, Extended Essay and TOK support is written down and given to the family: discussion, criterion feedback and process coaching on the student's own work only. Finished text and finished mathematics are never supplied, under any arrangement.

Rates attributed to their source

Every AED figure on this page carries the provider or survey that published it and the year. The market is quoted as the market; IB Gram's own fee is confirmed in writing after the trial lesson rather than advertised as a headline.

A calendar that survives Abu Dhabi

Sessions are scheduled on Gulf Standard Time around school-bus arrivals, exam terms and Ramadan timings, and they move to post-Iftar slots when a family asks. A video lesson absorbs a Yas Island event weekend or a travel week without being cancelled.

An honest answer when the match is not there

If no AI HL specialist is free in a family's preferred slot, the reply says so and offers the alternatives — a different time, a start date, or a tutor outside the UAE time zone — rather than placing a general mathematics tutor and hoping.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does an IB DP Math AI HL tutor in Abu Dhabi charge per hour?+

Published market rates give the realistic bands. Providers that publish prices put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 or more: Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase publishes AED 270. In-home visits run higher, AED 180-500 in Bestimate's 2026 survey, because travel is priced inside the hour. AI HL sits at the specialist end, since the tutor pool with genuine Paper 3 experience is small. IB Gram does not advertise a rate on this page; the fee is confirmed in writing after a free trial lesson.

How is Paper 3 different from Paper 1 and Paper 2 in Maths AI HL?+

Paper 3 is sat only by Higher Level candidates, lasts one hour, carries 20% of the grade, and contains two extended problem-solving questions rather than a spread of syllabus questions. The mathematics inside each part is not usually harder than Paper 2 mathematics; the difficulty is that the parts build on each other, so a student who stops at part (c) also loses parts (d) to (g). Examiners award marks for carrying a previous answer forward even when it was wrong, which makes writing down an assumed value and continuing the single most valuable Paper 3 habit to learn.

How many marks does the mathematical exploration carry in AI HL?+

Twenty, distributed across five criteria, and it is worth 20% of the final grade. Criterion A for presentation and Criterion B for mathematical communication are four marks each. Criterion C for personal engagement and Criterion D for reflection are three each. Criterion E for use of mathematics is six. The distribution matters because strong mathematics in a poorly structured document with no reflection caps at around eleven. At Higher Level, Criterion E is lost most often on level rather than accuracy: an exploration built on a basic regression is correct but pitched below the course.

Can a tutor comment on an exploration draft without breaking IB academic honesty rules?+

Yes, within a boundary that should be stated in writing before work starts. A tutor may discuss whether a question is viable, point at a criterion and say which descriptor the current version meets, flag notation and convention problems, and ask the questions that make a student see a gap. A tutor may not supply text, supply the mathematics, or hand back a rewritten version. The student signs an authenticity declaration for the school, and the whole document has to be theirs. Any service offering finished explorations is selling the student an IB malpractice investigation.

My son is at an Abu Dhabi IB school. Will a tutor work to his school's deadlines or their own?+

His school's. The school sets the internal exploration deadlines, the mock windows and the reporting cycle, and a tutor who ignores them creates two competing timetables. The first session should establish those dates, and the session plan is then built backwards from them. In practice that means exploration work is front-loaded into DP2 autumn, because school draft deadlines and mocks usually collide, and timed-paper work moves to the spring. Ask any tutor to tell you the school's next three deadlines after the second session; if they cannot, they are not working to a calendar.

How many weeks before we can judge whether the tutoring is working?+

Four weeks for the diagnosis and twelve for the trend. By week four a parent should be able to read a ranked list of the topics costing the most marks, a set of re-marked scripts showing where inside each answer the loss happens, and a baseline mark log drawn from the student's own school work. By week twelve the log should show movement on the topics that were attacked. Technical-hygiene marks come back fastest, new Higher Level content takes longest. A flat log across eight weeks with no explanation is a signal to change the plan or the tutor.

Does AI HL really need a graphic display calculator in every paper?+

Yes, and that is a structural difference from Analysis and Approaches, where Higher Level Paper 1 is sat without one. Applications and Interpretation assumes technology throughout all three papers, which changes what is being tested: model selection, interpretation and explanation rather than hand computation. Calculator workflow therefore becomes examinable technique. Fitting the right regression, running a hypothesis test and reading the p-value, finding intersections numerically, and storing exact values instead of retyping rounded ones each carry marks. A student fluent in the syllabus but clumsy with the device loses marks that have nothing to do with mathematics.

Why do AI HL candidates lose so many marks on chi-squared and t-test questions?+

Because the calculator does the arithmetic and the marks live in the sentence. A candidate runs the test, reads a p-value, and then writes a conclusion that omits the significance level, omits the context of the question, or says the null hypothesis is true rather than not rejected. Marks are also lost for not stating the hypotheses at the start and for not naming the test being used. None of this is a mathematical weakness, which is why it is among the fastest mark recovery available: strict, consistent marking of the conclusion wording usually fixes it inside a few weeks.

Is Maths AI HL accepted for engineering degrees at UAE universities?+

It varies by institution and by course, and the only safe answer is to read the published entry requirements for the specific programme in the year of application. Engineering, mathematics, physics and quantitative economics courses at competitive universities frequently specify Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, and the ones that will not accept AI say so explicitly. Business, psychology, architecture, life sciences and the social sciences generally accept AI HL without comment. A tutor can help a student read a requirement precisely but should never summarise away what a university states for itself.

What do matrices, networks and differential equations add to AI HL that SL never covers?+

They are a large part of what makes the Higher Level course Higher Level. AI HL extends into matrix algebra including eigenvalues and eigenvectors, transition matrices and steady-state behaviour, graph and network theory with its minimum-spanning-tree and route-inspection algorithms, complex numbers used in modelling, and numerical solutions to differential equations including Euler's method and coupled systems. Standard Level meets none of this. In small Abu Dhabi cohorts these topics are often taught quickly at the end of DP1, in the same term as the exploration, which is why re-teaching them properly in DP2 autumn is such a common tutoring request.

Can lessons move to post-Iftar times during Ramadan in Abu Dhabi?+

Yes, and planning that shift in advance works far better than cancelling the month. School hours shorten during Ramadan, energy patterns change, and a late-evening slot after Iftar is often the most productive hour of the day for a DP2 student. Because lessons run over live video, moving a weekly slot by three hours for four weeks costs nothing and requires no travel rearrangement. The practical advice is to agree the Ramadan timetable a few weeks ahead, keep the weekly rhythm, and treat the month as a scheduling change rather than a pause in the revision run.

How quickly can an AI HL specialist be matched for a family in Abu Dhabi?+

For mainstream Diploma subjects a match is usually possible within a few days. Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level is narrower, and the binding constraint is the slot rather than the subject: a 5pm Gulf Standard Time weekday request competes with every other Diploma family in the Gulf. If nothing suitable is free, the reply should say so and offer the real alternatives — a different weekday, a slightly later start, or a tutor in another time zone whose evening is the family's afternoon — rather than placing a general mathematics tutor and hoping it works.

What should we send when we first ask about an AI HL tutor?+

Six things make the first reply useful instead of generic: the course named exactly as Applications and Interpretation Higher Level, the school and year group, the specific topics causing trouble, where the exploration stands, two or three workable weekly slots in Gulf Standard Time, and the last two pieces of marked work. The marked work does most of the job. Marks matter less than the pattern of lost marks inside the answers, because that is what tells a tutor whether the problem is unlearned content or examination habit, and the two have very different timelines.

Does ADEK or MoHRE regulate private tutors in Abu Dhabi?+

MoHRE. The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, but individual private tutors are covered by the federal private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. u.ae states the permit is granted free of charge for two years and lists eligible applicants including registered school teachers, public and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to our villa in Khalifa City or Al Raha?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service offered only in India. For Abu Dhabi every lesson is one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard, screen sharing of the student's own script, and a recording available afterwards. The trade is deliberate: a family in Al Raha gets a tutor chosen for AI HL Paper 3 experience rather than one chosen for living a short drive away, and nobody pays a travel premium inside the hourly rate for a journey across the emirate at 4.30pm.

Start with one marked paper and one free lesson

If your child sits Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level in Abu Dhabi, the useful first step is small. Send the last two pieces of marked work, name the school and the slots that work in Gulf Standard Time, and take a free 45-minute trial lesson with the proposed tutor — no card details, no obligation. What should come back is specific: which topics are costing the most marks, which of those are unlearned content and which are examination habit, and what the first month would target. Everything after that is a record you can read, in writing, week by week.
