IB DP Math AI SL Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Math AI SL tutor in Abu Dhabi for the course most Diploma students in the emirate actually sit: Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, two ninety-minute papers, a calculator permitted throughout, and a statistics core that behaves nothing like IGCSE mathematics. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so a slot that fits around a Yas Island or Al Mushrif school run is a booking rather than a negotiation.

  • Both AI SL papers practised to the ninety-minute clock
  • Statistics core taught as inference, not as button-pressing
  • Route advice that reads the university's own entry requirements

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The maths course most Abu Dhabi Diploma students end up in

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is the default mathematics route for a large share of Diploma candidates in Abu Dhabi, and it arrives on the option form with almost no explanation attached. A student has four possible mathematics courses, two subject routes crossed with two levels, and roughly a week of Year 11 to decide between them. Most families pick by reputation rather than by content, and reputation gets this course wrong in both directions: it is neither the soft option its nickname suggests nor the dead end some admissions rumours imply.

The content is where the misunderstanding starts. AI SL spends a substantial part of its 150 teaching hours on statistics and probability, and the statistics it teaches are inferential rather than descriptive. A student who arrived from Cambridge IGCSE 0580 Extended or Pearson 4MA1 with a strong grade has drawn a cumulative frequency curve and calculated an interquartile range, and has almost certainly never stated a null hypothesis, read a p-value, interpreted a correlation coefficient properly, or met a chi-squared test. That is new material presented as revision, and it is the commonest reason a confident IGCSE mathematician gets a 4 in the first DP1 assessment.

The second misunderstanding is about the calculator. Both AI SL papers are sat with a graphic display calculator, which students hear as permission to compute less and examiners mean as a requirement to interpret more. Removing the arithmetic from an examination does not make it easier; it moves the marks into model selection, into reading output in context, and into the sentence that explains what a number means. Those are harder things to teach than long division, and they are the things an AI SL session usually has to fix.

Abu Dhabi adds a practical layer. The emirate's Diploma candidates are scattered from the island across the Khalifa City corridor to Al Shamkha and Al Reef, and finding a tutor who teaches this specific course and is also free at 5pm within a twenty-minute drive is largely luck. Online delivery replaces that lottery with a choice. A family in Al Reef and a family in Al Bateen can both book the same AI SL specialist in the same slot, because no one is driving anywhere.

On delivery, the position is plain and the same on every UAE page of this site: IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE. Tutors travelling to a family's address is a service available only in India. Every UAE lesson runs one-to-one over live video, with screen sharing of the student's own script, a shared whiteboard, and a recording the student can replay before an assessment.

The rest of this page is content rather than persuasion: the four-way route decision set out as a table, what the two papers contain and how the clock behaves, the statistics core topic by topic, the Standard Level exploration bar, the switching window and how long it stays open, the UAE Ministry of Education equivalency requirements with the sourced figures, and what a single weekly session can and cannot realistically change.

At a glance

  • AI SL is 150 teaching hours against 240 at Higher Level
  • Two papers, ninety minutes each, 40% apiece, calculator throughout
  • The exploration carries the remaining 20% and is marked out of 20
  • Statistical inference is new content, not IGCSE revision
  • All UAE lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An AI SL enquiry from Abu Dhabi almost always comes from a DP1 or DP2 family, but the diagnosis usually points backwards into the Middle Years Programme or into an IGCSE syllabus. These are the programmes that shape what an AI SL student brings to the first session.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Mathematics cannot be dropped, so every candidate sits one of four courses. AI SL runs for 150 teaching hours and is assessed by two ninety-minute written papers worth 40% each plus an internally assessed mathematical exploration worth 20%.

Within Abu Dhabi's Diploma cohorts, AI SL is typically the largest single mathematics group, which has an upside and a downside. Teaching is well established, but a student who needs individual attention in a class of thirty is competing with twenty-nine others for it, and the statistics topics are precisely where a whole-class pace hurts most.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Criterion-referenced study across eight subject groups. MYP mathematics is reported against four criteria rather than by percentage, and MYP 4 and 5 split into standard and extended routes. A student who took standard mathematics in MYP 5 is appropriately placed in AI SL and frequently under-placed in algebraic fluency relative to what the course assumes.

Abu Dhabi families moving a child between international schools inside the emirate sometimes cross from MYP into an IGCSE cohort or back. Those transfers leave specific, identifiable gaps, and a tutor's first job is to find them in old criterion reports rather than to re-teach a whole year.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 at Extended tier and Pearson International GCSE 4MA1 are the two routes most Abu Dhabi students take before the Diploma. Both cover algebra, functions, trigonometry and descriptive statistics thoroughly. Neither touches statistical inference, matrices, or formal regression, which are the AI SL topics that then feel unfamiliar.

The IGCSE-to-AI-SL step is the single commonest diagnostic in this emirate. A student arriving with a grade 7 in 0580 Extended has met perhaps two-thirds of what AI SL assumes, and the missing third is concentrated in one place. The first six to eight weeks of tutoring normally go straight there.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme and alternatives

Not every student who starts the full Diploma finishes it, and some Abu Dhabi schools offer course certificates or the Career-related Programme as alternatives. Mathematics requirements differ in each, and a student taking AI SL as a certificate course rather than inside the full Diploma still sits the same papers and the same exploration.

Where a student is taking AI SL as part of a reduced programme, the tutoring plan changes shape: the exploration still has to be done to the same rubric, but there is no Theory of Knowledge deadline competing with it, which usually means the exploration can be finished earlier and more calmly.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

AI SL students in Abu Dhabi rarely book mathematics alone. These are the Diploma courses most often requested alongside it, with a note on what each actually assesses rather than what it is called.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus, taught with technology assumed. At Standard Level the calculus is light and the statistics is heavy, including regression, correlation, the normal distribution and formal hypothesis testing.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

The algebraic and proof-oriented route. AA SL covers more calculus and more algebraic manipulation than AI SL and sits one paper without a calculator. It is the course named in many engineering, physics and mathematics entry requirements, which is why route choice matters more than course difficulty.

Business Management

SL and HL

Organisation, human resources, finance, marketing and operations, with a written research project at Higher Level and a commentary at Standard Level. Break-even analysis, investment appraisal and forecasting reuse AI SL skills directly, so students often find the finance unit the most approachable part of the course.

Economics

SL and HL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics, the global economy and development economics, assessed by papers plus three internal commentaries on news articles. Diagram interpretation and elasticity calculation reward the same careful reading of a graph that AI SL modelling questions demand.

Psychology

SL and HL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches, with research methods running through all of them. The statistical literacy AI SL builds — significance, correlation versus causation, sampling — maps directly onto the research-methods questions, and students who understand one usually understand the other.

Biology

SL and HL

Unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, continuity and change, plus the scientific investigation. Biology's data-analysis questions use standard deviation, error bars and chi-squared, which are AI SL topics appearing in a different syllabus.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Structure and reactivity across six organising themes with an internally assessed investigation. Mole calculations, dilution and titration arithmetic reward exactly the significant-figure and unit discipline that AI SL examiners look for, so the two subjects reinforce each other in the same session.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL

An interdisciplinary course that counts for either Group 3 or Group 4. Its data-based questions and the systems modelling in the course make it an unusually comfortable pairing with AI SL, and students taking both often use similar modelling ideas in two different pieces of internal assessment.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Textual analysis across literary and non-literary forms, assessed by the individual oral, the learner portfolio and written papers. It shares nothing mathematical with AI SL, but it competes for the same DP2 weeks, which is why the two timetables have to be planned together.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay. AI SL supplies good material here: questions about what a model can predict, what a correlation does and does not show, and how much certainty a statistical test provides sit on the mathematics knowledge-question syllabus.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three booking shapes cover nearly every AI SL request. All of them run over live video and none involves a visit to a UAE address; what differs is how much of the two-year course the arrangement is meant to cover.

One session a week, DP1 through DP2

The standard arrangement and the one that suits AI SL best, because the course rewards steady accumulation rather than rescue. A single weekly hour is enough to keep pace with school teaching, close the statistics gap in DP1, and keep the exploration moving without it becoming a crisis. Most Abu Dhabi families start here and add a second session only in the final term.

  • A fixed weekly slot held for the same student
  • Work set between sessions and marked before the next one
  • A topic list ranked by marks lost rather than by syllabus order
  • Recordings available to replay before a school assessment

A short statistics block

Six to eight sessions aimed at one part of the syllabus, normally the inferential statistics that IGCSE never covered. Families use this when school reports are fine apart from one recurring topic, and it is the cheapest useful intervention available in AI SL because the content is bounded and the mark gain is measurable on the next assessment.

  • Regression, correlation and the normal distribution
  • Hypothesis testing with conclusions written in context
  • Calculator workflow rehearsed until it is automatic
  • A written exit note on what still needs work

Final-term paper practice

A concentrated block in the weeks before the session, built on timed papers rather than new content. At Standard Level the gains here come from clock management across a ninety-minute paper and from command-term discipline, not from last-minute topics. Two sessions a week for six to eight weeks is the usual shape.

  • Full papers sat to time and marked strictly
  • Command terms drilled: write down, find, hence, comment on
  • Marks recovered from units, rounding and labelling
  • A final list of the three topics still costing most

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors listed below teach Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level as a course in its own right rather than as a cut-down version of something else. That distinction matters most in the statistics topics, where SL candidates are assessed on interpretation and the teaching has to be built around reading output rather than deriving it.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What 'AI SL' means on an Abu Dhabi option form

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is one of four mathematics courses a Diploma candidate can take, and the four are not a difficulty ladder. The two routes, Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, differ in content and philosophy. The two levels, Standard and Higher, differ in hours and depth. A student choosing between them is making two separate decisions at once, usually in the same week they are choosing five other subjects, and often with no written information about either.

The route decision is about what mathematics the student will do. Analysis and Approaches builds algebraic technique, formal calculus and proof. Applications and Interpretation builds modelling, data handling and statistical inference, with technology assumed throughout. Neither is the applied version of the other; they are two different subjects that share a name and a group number. A student who enjoys algebraic manipulation and dislikes writing interpretive sentences will find AI harder than its reputation suggests.

The level decision is about hours and content volume. Standard Level is 150 teaching hours and Higher Level is 240, and the extra ninety hours at HL are not revision time. They carry matrices and eigenvalues, graph and network theory, complex numbers in modelling, and numerical methods for differential equations, plus an entire third examination paper. A student in AI SL is not doing a reduced version of AI HL; large parts of the HL syllabus never appear.

For an Abu Dhabi family the useful framing is backwards from destination rather than forwards from preference. If the shortlist of degree courses contains engineering, physics, mathematics or quantitative finance at competitive universities, the published entry requirements frequently name Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level. If the shortlist is business, psychology, architecture, law, design, medicine in most systems, or the social sciences, AI SL is accepted routinely and the decision is genuinely free. The table below sets the four routes side by side.

02

Two papers, ninety minutes each, and a clock that punishes hesitation

  • Paper 1: shorter questions across the whole syllabus, 40%
  • Paper 2: extended-response questions, 40%
  • Exploration: internally assessed written investigation, 20%
  • No third paper at Standard Level, so no recovery component
  • A graphic display calculator is expected in both papers

AI SL is examined by two written papers of ninety minutes, each worth 40% of the final grade, plus the internally assessed exploration at 20%. Both papers allow a graphic display calculator. Paper 1 is built from shorter questions spread across the syllabus; Paper 2 is built from longer extended-response questions. There is no third paper at Standard Level, which means there is nowhere to recover a bad morning.

The ninety-minute clock is a specific and trainable problem. Standard Level candidates lose a predictable number of marks simply by spending too long on an early question and then rushing the last extended-response item, where the marks are densest. The fix is mechanical: practise a full paper to time, record where the clock actually went, and set a hard move-on rule. Students who have done this four times stop losing those marks, and students who have never sat a timed full paper lose them in the real examination.

Command terms carry the other systematic loss. 'Write down' wants an answer with no working and no justification. 'Find' wants a value, with working if the method earns marks. 'Hence' means the previous part must be used, and answering independently can score nothing even when the number is right. 'Comment on' and 'interpret' want a sentence about the context, and a correct figure with no sentence collects nothing on that mark. These are the cheapest marks in the subject and the ones most consistently left on the table.

What a tutor does with this is unglamorous and effective. Papers are sat to time rather than discussed, answers are marked against the published command terms rather than for general correctness, and the losses are sorted into unlearned content on one side and examination habit on the other. The habit side almost always moves faster, which is why it gets attacked first in a short block.

03

The statistics core: the part IGCSE never taught

If an AI SL student is in difficulty, the statistics topics are where to look first. Standard Level covers descriptive statistics, sampling and its biases, correlation and the Pearson coefficient, linear regression and its limits, probability including conditional probability, discrete and continuous random variables, the normal distribution, and formal hypothesis testing with the chi-squared test. Of that list, an IGCSE background covers roughly the first item and part of the fourth.

The characteristic error is procedural success with interpretive failure. A student runs a chi-squared test on the calculator, obtains a p-value, and writes a conclusion that omits the significance level, omits the context, or declares the null hypothesis true rather than not rejected. The same student will quote a correlation coefficient of 0.87 and describe it as proving a causal link, or extrapolate a regression line far beyond the range of the data without flagging that as a limitation. In each case the mathematics was done by the device and the marks were in the sentence.

The normal distribution produces a second cluster of losses, usually from sketching. A candidate who draws the curve, marks the mean, and shades the required region gets the inverse-normal questions right; a candidate who goes straight to the calculator gets the tail the wrong way round roughly half the time. Teaching the sketch as a compulsory first step is a single habit worth several marks a paper across both papers.

Sampling and bias is the third, and it is the most neglected because it carries no computation. Questions about why a sample is unrepresentative, what a sampling method does to a conclusion, or which population a result can be generalised to are answered in words and are marked generously when the words are precise. A student who has practised ten of these answers them reliably; a student who has skipped them because there were no numbers loses the marks every time.

04

The myth that AI SL is the easy maths

The nickname attached to this course in school corridors does real damage, because it sets a student's expectations in the wrong place and delays the moment a family asks for help. AI SL is a Standard Level Diploma mathematics course with 150 teaching hours, two examined papers and a graded internal assessment. It is not a remedial course, it does not run at IGCSE depth, and a student who coasts the first term of DP1 on the assumption that it will stay familiar typically meets reality in the first formal assessment.

The specific reason the reputation misleads is that the difficulty arrives in an unexpected shape. Students expect hard mathematics to look hard: long algebraic manipulations, awkward integrals, proofs. AI SL difficulty looks easy on the page. A question gives a context, some data and a graph, and asks the candidate to choose a model, justify the choice, use technology, and comment on the limitation. Nothing in it is intimidating to read, and a student can lose six of eight marks while feeling that they understood the question.

The second reason is the calculator. Being allowed a graphic display calculator in both papers reads to a sixteen-year-old as a reduction in difficulty, and functions in practice as a change of subject. The device removes the computation and the examination compensates by asking for judgement: which model, which test, what does this output mean here, what would make it unreliable. Judgement is harder to teach and harder to revise than technique, and it is the reason AI SL students benefit from being asked to explain answers out loud.

None of this is an argument for switching course. It is an argument for taking the course seriously from the first term of DP1, sitting timed questions early, and not reading a 4 in the first assessment as evidence that the student is bad at mathematics. In most cases it is evidence that a student trained on IGCSE questions has met a different examination and has not yet been taught what it rewards.

05

The exploration at Standard Level: a different bar from Higher Level

Every mathematics candidate at every route and level produces one mathematical exploration, marked out of twenty against the same five criteria and worth 20% of the grade. What changes between SL and HL is the mathematics the rubric expects to see, because Criterion E asks for mathematics commensurate with the course. An exploration that would be judged thin at Higher Level can score well at Standard Level, and that is a genuine relief to a student who has been told the exploration is terrifying.

The mark distribution is where SL students most often lose unnecessarily. Presentation is four marks and mathematical communication is four, which together outweigh the six available for the mathematics itself. A student who runs a competent regression analysis and then submits it as a sequence of calculator screenshots with no defined variables, no captions and no structure is throwing away eight marks that required no additional mathematics at all. Fixing presentation and communication is editing, and editing is the part of the exploration a student can control completely.

Reflection, Criterion D at three marks, is the other common gap. Reflection is not a concluding paragraph saying the investigation was interesting. It is comment at the points where a decision was made: why this model rather than that one, what the result does not show, what a larger sample would have changed, where the method breaks. Two or three substantive comments of that kind, placed where the decisions happened, usually move this criterion.

The boundary on what help is permitted is fixed by IB academic honesty rules and should be given to a family in writing before any exploration session. A tutor may discuss whether a question is viable, read a draft and name which criterion descriptor it currently meets, flag notation problems, and ask questions that make a student notice a gap. A tutor may not supply text or supply the mathematics. The student signs an authenticity declaration; the document must be theirs throughout.

06

Switching route or level: how long the window stays open

Course and level changes inside the Diploma are a school decision, not a tutoring decision, and the practical window is narrower than most families assume. A move between mathematics routes or levels is usually straightforward in the first term of DP1, awkward in the second, and difficult once the school has set internal assessment timelines and the student has missed a term of unfamiliar content. The deciding factor is not willingness but the amount of ground to make up.

The direction of the move matters as much as the timing. Dropping from AI HL to AI SL is the gentlest change, because the SL syllabus is contained within the HL course and the student loses content rather than gaining it. Moving from AA SL to AI SL means picking up the inferential statistics the AA syllabus does not include, which is a bounded piece of work, perhaps six to eight focused sessions. Moving from AI SL to AA SL in the second term is the hardest of the three, because it means acquiring algebraic technique and a non-calculator paper discipline at the same time.

What a tutor can honestly contribute here is a ground-truth assessment of the gap. Given the school's scheme of work and two pieces of the student's marked work, it is possible to say roughly how many sessions of catch-up a particular move implies and which topics they would cover. That is a useful input to the conversation with the Diploma coordinator. It is not a recommendation to switch, and a tutor who pushes a switch is selling sessions.

The decision that cannot be fixed afterwards is a prerequisite mismatch. If a target degree requires Analysis and Approaches and a student is in AI SL in DP2, no amount of tutoring changes the requirement. The remaining options are a different course choice, a different university, or a foundation-year route, and all three should be discussed with the school's university counsellor rather than with a tutor.

07

MoE equivalency: what the certificate actually has to show

Families in Abu Dhabi planning a UAE university application meet a process that has nothing to do with school grades as such: Ministry of Education equivalency, which converts an international school certificate into a UAE-recognised qualification. It is a documentary process run by the authority, not by a school and not by a tutoring service, and it has published requirements that are worth reading before a student picks subjects rather than after.

On the British track the sourced requirements are specific. Gulf Today's July 2026 report on the Ministry's clarification states that students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must submit proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. The same report states that Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which is a detail at least one ranking tutoring site publishes incorrectly as a six-subject rule.

On the American track the published requirements are test-based. English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Mathematics test before applying. For the IB Diploma, no points threshold appears in that source at all, which means no honest page can publish one: the figure has to be read on the Ministry's own site or confirmed with the attestation authority.

What this means for an AI SL student is mostly reassurance plus one instruction. Equivalency does not require tutoring, and nobody should suggest it does. It does require documents, grades that clear published thresholds, and in some cases standardised test scores, and it rewards checking the current requirements on the official channel in the year of application rather than relying on a summary written the year before.

What one session a week can fix, and what it cannot

  • One weekly hour closes a bounded gap and changes examination habits
  • It does not re-teach an unlearned syllabus in a final term
  • Sessions should run on work the student has already attempted
  • Progress is read from a mark log, not from a report adjective
  • A flat log at week twelve means change something

A single weekly hour is the arrangement most Abu Dhabi families start with, and it is worth being precise about its reach. One hour a week, used well, closes a bounded content gap, changes examination habits, keeps the exploration moving, and gives a parent a written record of where the marks are going. Over a term that is enough to move a student who understands the mathematics but loses marks on presentation, interpretation and the clock.

What one hour a week does not do is re-teach a syllabus. A student in DP2 who has not learned the statistics core, has not written an exploration, and has eight weeks until the session needs more hours than that, and should be told so rather than sold a weekly slot. The honest version of the conversation sets out what a given number of hours can realistically reach and lets the family decide; the dishonest version promises a grade and quietly hopes.

The other limit is between sessions. The work that moves marks in AI SL is the work done alone: a timed question, a marked past-paper section, a corrected answer rewritten properly. A tutoring hour that is spent watching a student work through problems they could have done alone wastes the expensive hour. Sessions should run on work already attempted, and the task set between them is as much a part of the arrangement as the session itself.

The checkpoint that keeps all of this honest is a written one. At week four, a family should be able to read a ranked list of topics costing marks, a baseline mark log from the student's own school work, and a short note after each session. At week twelve, the log should show movement on the topics attacked. If it has not, the response is to change the plan or the tutor rather than to extend the arrangement on faith.

Online delivery in Abu Dhabi, and what it costs across the market

Every UAE lesson here is one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a home in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or anywhere else in the Emirates; home visits are offered only in India. That is stated plainly because the alternative is an impression that gets corrected at the worst possible moment, and because the online model has an argument on its merits for a course like this one.

The merit is specialist supply. Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is widely taught, but a tutor who teaches it as its own course, knows how the statistics questions are marked, and is free at 5pm Gulf Standard Time is a narrow intersection. Searching that intersection inside a twenty-minute radius of Al Raha gives a family a handful of options. Searching it across every time zone that teaches the Diploma gives a real choice, and the only thing given up is physical presence in the room.

On price, the published market figures are the honest reference point. Providers that publish rates put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour and IB specialists higher: Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey puts specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits in the same survey run AED 180 to 350, with independent home tutors quoted up to AED 500, because the driving is inside the hourly rate. Those are market figures from the named sources, not IB Gram's fee.

What that comparison buys an Abu Dhabi family is usually two online hours for the price of one in-home hour, with the tutor chosen for the course rather than for the postcode. IB Gram does not publish a rate on this page because the right figure depends on frequency, level and how long remains before the session. A free 45-minute trial lesson comes first, with no card details taken, and the fee is confirmed in writing before anything is booked.

Where we tutor

Where Abu Dhabi AI SL students live, and what that does to a session time

Session timing is the practical constraint in this emirate, not distance, because distance stopped mattering the moment lessons moved to video. What still matters is when a student actually gets home and how much is left in them. These are the communities AI SL requests come from.

Khalifa City

Bus runs from the island schools commonly land students here between 3.15pm and 4pm, with homework starting after that. A 5pm or 5.30pm slot is the realistic first option; 4pm bookings tend to be cancelled twice and then moved.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Short internal distances and a concentrated international-school population. Families here frequently run two siblings in back-to-back online slots, which only works because there is no handover journey between them.

Al Reem Island

Tower living with one causeway on and off the island, so an afternoon in-home visit prices in a long and unpredictable drive. Online slots from 5pm are the standard booking pattern from this community.

Yas Island

Event weekends can reshape an evening without notice. A video lesson is unaffected, which turns a recurring Abu Dhabi scheduling annoyance into a non-issue rather than a monthly cancellation.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Established island neighbourhoods close to several long-running private schools, so students are often home by 3.30pm. These are the families who can genuinely use a 4pm slot, which is the easiest hour to book.

Al Shamkha and Al Reef

Newer peripheral developments where the local supply of Diploma subject specialists is thinnest. Sessions here usually start at 6pm or later and are the clearest case for choosing a tutor by course rather than by proximity.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community with a long, variable commute and a high proportion of students at mainland schools. Later evening slots dominate, and consistency of timing matters more here than anywhere else in the emirate.

Masdar City and the airport corridor

A small but growing residential population with limited nearby tutoring provision. For an AI SL student here, the choice is effectively between an online specialist and nothing closer than the city centre.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi island and Saadiyat

The island and Saadiyat campuses between them account for a large share of the emirate's Diploma entries. AI SL group sizes here are typically the largest mathematics sets in a cohort, so individual statistics support is the most frequently requested help from this cluster.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City, Al Raha and the mainland corridor

The corridor running out from Khalifa City holds the emirate's densest cluster of international schools and its busiest bus network. Session timing requests from this cluster are shaped almost entirely by when the bus arrives.

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Canadian International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy

Al Ain and the outer emirate

Al Ain falls under the same regulator as Abu Dhabi city and runs its own IB and British-curriculum schools. Local specialist supply for a single Diploma course is very limited, which makes online delivery the practical default rather than a second choice.

  • Al Ain International School
  • Liwa International School
  • Emirates National Schools

Named schools appear here as context for the Abu Dhabi schooling environment families ask about. No affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with any school is implied, and current programme offerings should be checked on ADEK's own school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Name the course exactly

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, not 'IB maths'. The four mathematics courses need four different tutors, and the single most common cause of a poor first match is a request that does not say which one the student sits.

  2. 02

Send two pieces of marked work

A school assessment and a past-paper section are enough. What a tutor reads is not the mark but the pattern inside the answers: whether marks were lost to unlearned content, to command terms, or to the clock. Those three have very different timelines.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One 45-minute session over live video with the proposed tutor, no card details and no obligation. It runs on a real question from the student's own work and ends with the tutor stating what the first month would target and in what order.

  4. 04

Fix the slot around the bus, not the clock

Sessions are set on Gulf Standard Time around when the student actually gets home. For Khalifa City and Al Raha that is usually 5pm or later; for the island neighbourhoods 4pm often works. A single lesson can be moved with 24 hours' notice.

  5. 05

Read the file at week four and week twelve

Two scheduled points to check the mark log and the session notes and decide whether the arrangement is working. If the log has not moved on the topics being attacked and nobody can explain why, change the plan rather than extend it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the course, not to the subject

A request for AI SL returns a tutor who teaches Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level, including how its statistics questions are marked. Online delivery is what makes that specificity available to a family in Al Shamkha or Al Ain at all.

Statistics taught as reasoning

The inferential statistics that IGCSE never covered are taught as hypotheses, significance and interpretation rather than as calculator sequences. That is where AI SL marks actually sit, and it is the gap most frequently found in a first diagnosis.

Route advice from the source

Questions about AA against AI are answered by reading the published entry requirements for the specific course at the specific universities on a student's shortlist, in the year of application, rather than by repeating a general rule that may not apply.

Honest limits on what hours can do

An arrangement is quoted against what it can realistically reach. A student eight weeks from the session with an unlearned syllabus is told that plainly, with the hours it would actually take, instead of being sold a weekly slot and an outcome.

Market rates, properly attributed

Every AED figure here names the provider or survey that published it and the year. The market is quoted as the market; IB Gram's own fee is confirmed in writing after a free trial lesson rather than advertised as a headline number.

A schedule that bends

Slots move for Ramadan, for travel weeks and for examination terms without the arrangement breaking, because no travel is involved. A video lesson survives a Yas Island event weekend that would have cancelled a home visit.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Is Maths AI SL easier than AA SL, or just different?+

Different, with the difficulty in a different place. AA SL rewards algebraic technique, formal calculus and manipulation, and it includes a paper sat without a calculator. AI SL rewards model choice, data interpretation and statistical reasoning, with a calculator permitted in both papers. A student strong at algebra and weak at writing interpretive sentences often finds AI harder than its reputation suggests. Both are 150-hour Standard Level courses assessed by two ninety-minute papers worth 40% each plus a 20% exploration, so neither is a reduced version of the other.

Which maths course do most Abu Dhabi Diploma students actually sit?+

Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level is typically the largest mathematics group in an Abu Dhabi Diploma cohort, with AA SL next and the Higher Level groups much smaller. That has a practical consequence: AI SL teaching in these schools is well established, but a student needing individual help in a large set is competing with everyone else in it. The statistics topics are where whole-class pace hurts most, because they are new content rather than extension, and they are the commonest reason a family looks for outside support in DP1.

How long are the AI SL papers and what is in each one?+

Two papers of ninety minutes, each worth 40% of the final grade, both sat with a graphic display calculator. Paper 1 is made up of shorter questions spread across the whole syllabus. Paper 2 is made up of longer extended-response questions. The remaining 20% is the internally assessed mathematical exploration. There is no third paper at Standard Level, which matters more than it sounds: a Higher Level candidate who has a poor Paper 1 has two further papers to recover in, and a Standard Level candidate has one.

Does my daughter need AI SL or AA SL for a business degree?+

Business and management programmes generally accept either, and AI SL is accepted routinely, but the only reliable answer comes from the published entry requirements of the specific courses on her shortlist in the year she applies. Some quantitative economics and finance programmes specify Analysis and Approaches, occasionally at Higher Level, and those that do state it explicitly in their prospectus. The instruction is dull and necessary: read the admissions page for each target course before the option form is signed, not after, and treat any general rule as a starting point rather than an answer.

What is a Voronoi diagram and why is it in the SL syllabus?+

A Voronoi diagram divides a plane into regions around a set of points, so that every location in a region is nearer to its own point than to any other. It appears in Applications and Interpretation because it is a genuine applied tool: deciding which school, hospital or depot serves a given address, or where to site a new one so that it is as far as possible from existing sites. Examination questions ask candidates to construct perpendicular bisectors, identify a nearest-neighbour region, and solve the toxic-waste-dump problem of locating a point furthest from all sites.

Can my son switch from AA SL to AI SL partway through DP1?+

Usually yes in the first term and often in the second, but it is the school's decision and the Diploma coordinator has to agree it. The work involved is bounded: the AA syllabus does not cover inferential statistics, so the catch-up is regression, correlation, the normal distribution and hypothesis testing, which is roughly six to eight focused sessions. Moving the other way, from AI SL into AA SL, is harder because it means building algebraic technique and non-calculator paper discipline at the same time. A tutor can estimate the gap honestly; the decision belongs to the school.

How much less content is there in AI SL than in AI HL?+

Substantially less, and the difference is not simply depth. Standard Level runs for 150 teaching hours and Higher Level for 240, and the additional hours carry content SL never meets: matrix algebra including eigenvalues and eigenvectors, graph and network theory with its route and spanning-tree algorithms, complex numbers used in modelling, and numerical solutions to differential equations. Higher Level also sits a third examination paper of two extended problem-solving questions worth 20% of the grade. A student in AI SL is not studying a trimmed AI HL course; large sections of it are simply absent.

Does UAE Ministry of Education equivalency require a particular maths grade?+

On the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five. On the American track, mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Mathematics test. For the IB Diploma no points threshold appears in the sources read, so none is published here. Check the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority in the year of application.

What does the Standard Level exploration need to contain to score well?+

Mathematics commensurate with the Standard Level course, presented properly, with genuine reflection. The marks are twenty: four for presentation, four for mathematical communication, three for personal engagement, three for reflection, six for use of mathematics. SL students most often lose the eight presentation and communication marks rather than the mathematics ones, by submitting calculator screenshots with undefined variables, uncaptioned graphs and no structure. Fixing that is editing, not mathematics, and it is entirely within a student's control. Reflection means comment at each decision point, not a closing paragraph.

Is one session a week enough for AI SL?+

For most students in DP1, yes. One well-used hour closes a bounded content gap, changes examination habits, keeps the exploration moving and produces a written record of where marks are going. What it does not do is re-teach a syllabus. A DP2 student eight weeks from the session who has not learned the statistics core and has no exploration needs more hours than that, and should be told so rather than enrolled in a weekly slot. The work that moves marks happens between sessions, so the task set matters as much as the hour.

My child gets the method right and still loses marks. Where do they go?+

Three places, in roughly this order. Command terms: 'hence' parts answered independently, 'comment on' answered with a number and no sentence, 'write down' answered with unnecessary working. Technical hygiene: values rounded early and then reused, units missing from a final answer, axes unlabelled, a calculator left in the wrong angle mode. And the clock: too long on an early question, then a rushed final extended-response item where the marks are densest. All three are habits rather than knowledge, which is why they move quickly once someone marks them strictly and consistently.

Is AI SL roughly the same level as IGCSE 0580 Extended?+

No, and assuming it is causes the commonest shock in DP1. Cambridge IGCSE 0580 at Extended tier and Pearson's 4MA1 cover algebra, functions, trigonometry and descriptive statistics thoroughly, and a student with a strong grade in either has met perhaps two-thirds of what AI SL assumes. The missing third is concentrated: statistical inference, formal regression, the normal distribution, conditional probability and modelling with technology. None of that appears on an IGCSE syllabus, so the first six to eight weeks of AI SL tutoring normally go straight there.

What does an online AI SL tutor cost for a family in Abu Dhabi?+

Market figures from providers that publish them give the honest bands. Qualified online subject tutors run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour; Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase publishes AED 270, while Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits in the same survey are AED 180 to 350, with independent home tutors quoted up to AED 500, because travel is inside the rate. Standard Level generally sits below Higher Level. IB Gram confirms its own fee in writing after a free trial lesson.

Do AI SL students use a graphic display calculator in both papers?+

Yes. Applications and Interpretation assumes technology throughout, so a graphic display calculator is expected in Paper 1 and Paper 2. This differs from Analysis and Approaches, where one paper is sat without one. The consequence is that calculator fluency is examinable technique: fitting the right regression model, running a chi-squared test and reading the p-value, using the inverse normal function the right way round, finding intersections numerically, and storing exact values instead of retyping rounded ones. A student who knows the syllabus and fumbles the device loses marks that are not mathematical.

What actually happens in the first AI SL session?+

Diagnosis, using the student's own work rather than a bought test. The tutor asks for the last two school assessments and any past-paper attempts, re-marks a selection against the published command terms, and sorts the losses into two groups: content the student has not learned, and content the student knows but loses marks on. The second group is attacked first because it returns more marks per hour. The session ends with a ranked list of topics, a plan for the first month, and a task to complete before the next lesson.

Two marked papers and a free lesson is the whole first step

If your child sits Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level in an Abu Dhabi school, start small and specific. Send the last two pieces of marked mathematics, say which school and year group, and give two workable weekly slots in Gulf Standard Time. A free 45-minute trial lesson with the proposed tutor follows, with no card details taken. What should come back is a ranked list of the topics costing the most marks, a view on whether the losses are unlearned content or examination habit, and an honest estimate of how many hours the gap actually needs.
