IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Physics SL is usually a means to an end, and that should shape the teaching

Most students sitting Physics at Standard Level in Abu Dhabi did not choose it because they love physics. They chose it because the Diploma requires a Group 4 science, because a target degree mentions a science, because the alternative subjects clashed on the timetable, or because an older sibling said it was the sensible option. That is not a criticism of anyone. It is the single most useful fact about the course, because it changes what good teaching looks like.

A student who intends to study physics benefits from depth, derivation and the pleasure of a hard problem. A student who needs a 5 or a 6 in Physics SL to complete a Diploma aimed at law, design, business or medicine benefits from something else entirely: a bounded map of the 150 hours, a hard focus on the marks that are lost for non-physics reasons, and a revision routine that fits around five other subjects. Teaching the second student as if they were the first is the commonest way a Standard Level physics grade stalls at a 4.

The bounded map matters because Physics SL is finite in a way students rarely realise. The current guide runs five themes — space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; nuclear and quantum physics — and Standard Level sees those themes without the Higher Level extensions. The relativity, rigid body mechanics, induction and quantum extensions that frighten students reading about the course online are not on the Standard Level syllabus at all. Knowing precisely where the boundary sits removes a surprising amount of anxiety in one session.

The marks lost for non-physics reasons are the other half. A large share of Standard Level loss comes from unit conversion, from arithmetic done in a hurry, from an answer given to five significant figures when the data justified two, from a one-line answer to a question whose command term asked for reasons, and from a graph read correctly and interpreted wrongly. None of that is theory. All of it is habit, and habit changes in weeks when someone marks it strictly.

Abu Dhabi's practical constraint is timing rather than distance, because lessons here run over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; tutors travelling to a family's address is a service available only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one on video with screen sharing of the student's own work. What that buys a Standard Level family is the ability to pick a tutor who teaches this course well rather than one who happens to live near Khalifa City, and to hold a slot at 6pm without anyone driving across Mussafah to reach it.

The rest of this page sets out the content boundary theme by theme, the Higher Level to Standard Level decision and when it can still be made, where Standard Level marks actually go, how the scientific investigation works at this level, a revision plan counted backwards from the May session, and what the Abu Dhabi market charges for a science specialist.

A Physics SL booking in Abu Dhabi is almost always a Diploma booking, but the useful history sits earlier. What a student brings from middle years science or from an IGCSE physics course decides how much of the first term is repair and how much is progress.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every candidate must take a Group 4 science, and Physics SL is one of the standard ways to do it. Assessment is Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and the scientific investigation at 20%, with a data booklet supplied in the examinations.

In Abu Dhabi cohorts the Standard Level physics set is often a mixed group: a few students who moved down from Higher Level, several who need a science and chose this one, and one or two genuine physicists who wanted the timetable space. A whole-class pace cannot serve all three, which is where individual support earns its place.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Integrated sciences assessed against four criteria, including inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating. Those two criteria are the direct ancestors of the Diploma scientific investigation, so students from a strong MYP background usually find the investigation familiar even when the physics content feels new.

Where an Abu Dhabi student has come through the same school's MYP, the old criterion reports are the cheapest diagnostic available. They tend to show clearly whether the difficulty in DP1 will be the arithmetic and algebra or the extended written explanation, and those need different plans.

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 and Pearson International GCSE 4PH1 are the usual routes into the Diploma for Abu Dhabi students. Both cover mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity and basic nuclear physics. The Diploma deepens all of it and adds formal uncertainty treatment and much longer written explanation.

The step from 0625 or 4PH1 into Physics SL is manageable and has two predictable sticking points: rearranging a formula rather than substituting into it, and writing a three-step explanation rather than a one-line answer. A term of deliberate work on those two clears most of the gap.

Course certificates and the Career-related Programme

Not every student takes the full Diploma. Some Abu Dhabi schools offer individual course certificates or the Career-related Programme, and a student can sit Physics SL within either. The papers and the investigation are identical; what differs is the surrounding workload and the absence of some core deadlines.

A student taking Physics SL as a certificate course usually has more room in the DP2 calendar, because there is no Extended Essay competing for the same weeks. That often means the investigation can be finished early, which is the single best thing to do with it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics SL is usually one piece of a wider Diploma plan, and Abu Dhabi families often book two or three subjects together. These are the courses most frequently requested alongside it.

Physics

SL and HL

Five themes assessed by Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and one scientific investigation at 20%. Standard Level sees the themes without the Higher Level extensions, so relativity, rigid body mechanics, induction and quantum physics do not appear on the syllabus.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Structure and reactivity across six organising themes, with its own scientific investigation marked on the same four criteria. The two sciences share the uncertainty and significant-figure conventions, so one data-handling session repairs marks in both.

Biology

SL and HL

Four organising themes plus the investigation. Biology carries more terminology and less arithmetic than physics, which is why students who struggle with rearrangement often do better here and should know that before an option form is signed.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Modelling and statistics with technology assumed throughout. The commonest mathematics pairing for a Physics SL student, and the one that leaves rearrangement and trigonometry to be built inside the physics sessions.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

The algebraic and calculus route, including a paper sat without a calculator. A Physics SL student in AA SL usually finds the formula work routine, because the mathematics course is already drilling exactly that fluency.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL

An interdisciplinary course that can satisfy either Group 3 or Group 4. Students weighing Physics SL against a lighter science route frequently compare the two, and the honest comparison is about assessment style rather than difficulty.

Business Management

SL and HL

Organisation, human resources, finance, marketing and operations. A very common Diploma companion for Abu Dhabi students taking Physics SL as their required science rather than as a subject of interest.

Economics

SL and HL

Micro, macro, the global economy and development, with internal commentaries on news articles. It competes with physics for DP2 weeks, which makes planning the two timetables together more useful than treating them separately.

Design Technology

SL and HL

The design cycle, materials, production and a major project. It shares the physics habit of justifying a choice against evidence and rewards the same documentation discipline the investigation needs.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay. A Standard Level physics student has good material here: measurement, uncertainty and the status of scientific models are all usable knowledge questions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes cover nearly all Standard Level physics requests. Each runs over live video and none involves travel to a UAE address; the difference is how much of the course the booking is meant to carry.

Weekly one-to-one alongside school teaching

One hour a week through DP1 and DP2, used to keep pace rather than to rescue. For a Standard Level student this is usually sufficient, because the content is bounded and the recoverable marks are habits. The hour works best on material the student has already attempted, with the next week's task set at the end of each session.

  • A fixed weekly slot held for the same student
  • Work set between lessons and marked before the next
  • The school's own scheme of work followed, not a parallel one
  • Recordings available before school assessments

A technique and conversion block

Six sessions aimed squarely at the marks lost for non-physics reasons: unit conversion and prefixes, significant figures matched to the data, rearranging before substituting, reading a graph and stating what a gradient means with units, and matching an answer's length to the command term. Families book this when the physics is understood and the marks are not arriving.

  • Unit prefixes and conversions drilled to automatic
  • Significant-figure and rounding conventions fixed
  • Rearrangement practised before any substitution
  • Answers marked against the published command terms

A countdown block before the May session

Eight to twelve weeks of structured revision counted backwards from the examination window rather than forwards from today. Each week has a theme, a timed paper section and a marked return, so there is never a question of what to revise next. Two sessions a week is the usual shape in the final six weeks.

  • A written week-by-week plan from the first session
  • Timed Paper 1 and Paper 2 sections every week
  • Marked returns with the three weakest areas named
  • A final fortnight spent only on already-identified weaknesses

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Who takes Physics SL, and why the reason changes the plan

A Standard Level physics set in an Abu Dhabi school usually contains three different students. The first moved down from Higher Level, often during DP1, and carries both relief and a dented confidence. The second needs a Group 4 science, picked physics over biology or chemistry for timetable or preference reasons, and has no intention of studying it further. The third genuinely likes physics but wanted Higher Level space for another subject, and will probably finish with a 7.

Those three students need different tutoring, and the mismatch is the commonest reason a Standard Level grade sticks. The student who moved down from Higher Level does not need more content; they need to be shown how much smaller the syllabus has become, because they are usually still revising as if the extensions applied. The student who needs a grade does not need derivations; they need a bounded map, strict marking and a routine. The student who likes physics needs harder questions than the class is setting.

The practical implication for a parent choosing a tutor is to be explicit about which student their child is, because the honest answer shapes the first month. A family that says 'she needs a 5, she is not going to be an engineer, and she has five other subjects' will get a plan built around marks per hour of effort. A family that says only 'she needs help with physics' will get something generic and will pay for a term of it before noticing.

Being clear about the goal is not lowering ambition; it is choosing where the effort goes. A Standard Level student aiming at a 6 who spends every session on the hardest Paper 2 questions while losing eight marks a paper to unit conversion and command terms is working hard in the wrong place. Sequencing the work by marks recoverable per hour is what a good Standard Level plan actually is.

02

Standard Level and Higher Level side by side

The difference between the two levels is ninety teaching hours and a set of named extensions that sit inside the five themes, plus longer papers. Standard Level runs 150 hours and Higher Level 240. Both levels are assessed on Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and the scientific investigation at 20%, which surprises families who assume the Standard Level investigation must be a smaller piece of work. It is not: same rubric, same four criteria, same twenty-four marks, same 3,000-word limit.

What Standard Level does not include is the content students read about online and panic over. Rigid body mechanics with torque and moment of inertia, Galilean and special relativity, induction with flux and Lenz's law, gravitational and electric potential as extended topics, and quantum physics with the photoelectric effect and the de Broglie relationship are Higher Level material. A Standard Level student encountering those in a video or a revision book is reading something they will not be examined on, and the hours spent are simply gone.

Paper durations differ between the levels, with Higher Level sitting longer papers in both components. The exact timings for a particular session should be confirmed with the school's Diploma coordinator rather than taken from any third-party page, including this one. What is stable and worth planning around is the weighting, because weighting is what tells a student where to spend revision time, and Paper 2 at 44% deserves more of it than most students give it.

The table below is the version worth having on a wall during DP1, because it answers the two questions a Standard Level student actually asks: what is on my syllabus, and what is not.

03

The five themes at Standard Level depth

The current Physics guide organises the course into five themes, and at Standard Level each one is studied without its Higher Level extensions. Theme A, space, time and motion, covers kinematics, forces, momentum, work and energy, and circular motion. Theme B, the particulate nature of matter, covers thermal energy and specific heat, the gas laws and the kinetic model, and the greenhouse effect and energy transfers. Theme C, wave behaviour, covers simple harmonic motion, wave characteristics, superposition, interference and standing waves.

Theme D, fields, covers gravitational and electric fields at Standard Level depth, electric current and circuits including resistance and power, and magnetic effects of currents. Theme E, nuclear and quantum physics, covers the structure of the atom, radioactive decay and half-life, nuclear fission and fusion, and mass-energy equivalence. Alongside these sit the tools — experimental technique, technology and mathematics — and the inquiry process, which supply the investigation's structure.

Where Standard Level students lose most content marks is predictable by theme rather than random. Circular motion in Theme A causes trouble because it requires recognising that a resultant force points towards a centre even when nothing visible pushes it there. The gas laws in Theme B cause trouble through unit handling, especially temperature in kelvin. Circuits in Theme D cause trouble because series and parallel reasoning has to be done before any formula is used. Half-life in Theme E causes trouble when the question gives a fraction rather than a whole number of half-lives.

The table maps each theme to the mathematics it assumes and the specific topic that most reliably needs a second explanation. A revision plan built on that map is more efficient than one built on the order of the textbook, because it puts the hours where the marks are.

Moving from Higher Level to Standard Level: the decision and the window

  • The window is widest in the first term of DP1 and narrows after
  • Standard Level content is a subset of Higher Level, so nothing new is learned
  • Marks lost to habits follow a student down a level; extension losses do not
  • Check the specific course requirements before deciding, on the university's own pages
  • The decision is the school's, not a tutor's

Dropping physics from Higher Level to Standard Level is the commonest level change in a science subject, and it is usually a good decision made too late. The school decides, the Diploma coordinator has to agree it, and the practical window is widest in the first term of DP1 and narrows through the second. By DP2 a move is still sometimes possible but the student has already spent a year carrying a heavier course, which is a year of pressure that did not need to be paid.

The mechanics of the move are gentle, which is the part families do not realise. The Standard Level syllabus is contained within the Higher Level course, so a student who moves down does not have to learn anything new. They have to stop learning things, which is psychologically harder and practically easier. The content they were struggling with in the extensions simply ceases to be examinable, and the content they already know becomes a comfortable margin.

The decision should be made on evidence rather than on a single bad assessment. The useful evidence is two or three pieces of marked work and an honest read on where the marks went. A student losing marks across the Higher Level extensions specifically is a good candidate for the move. A student losing marks on unit conversion, command terms and arithmetic is not: those losses will follow them to Standard Level, and dropping a level without fixing them converts a struggling Higher Level student into a struggling Standard Level student.

The thing to check before moving is the university requirement, and it should be checked on the universities' own admissions pages rather than assumed. Some engineering and physical-science programmes specify physics at Higher Level. Many degrees specify a science without naming a level. Where a target course requires Higher Level, the conversation is about course choice and shortlist rather than about tutoring, and it belongs with the school's university counsellor.

05

Where Standard Level marks actually go

Mark loss at Standard Level has a different profile from Higher Level, and it is more recoverable. The largest single block is unit handling. Prefixes converted wrongly, millimetres treated as metres, temperatures left in degrees Celsius inside a gas-law calculation, kilowatt-hours mixed with joules, and electronvolts left unconverted together account for a startling number of lost marks across a paper. None of that requires understanding more physics, and all of it responds to six weeks of strict marking.

The second block is answer length against command term. A question that says 'explain' wants reasons and the mark scheme awards the steps; a student who writes one correct line collects one mark of three. A question that says 'state' wants one line, and a student who writes a paragraph wastes time they will need later in the paper. Command terms are published, there are not many of them, and matching an answer to the term is a mechanical skill that moves marks within a few weeks of attention.

The third block is graph work. Reading a gradient, saying what the gradient physically represents, giving it units, reading an intercept and interpreting it, and recognising when a relationship needs linearising before a straight line can be drawn are all examined. Students routinely get the number right and the meaning wrong, which scores the calculation mark and loses the interpretation mark. Practising the sentence, not just the calculation, fixes it.

The fourth is arithmetic under pressure, which is where a calculator habit matters. Working to full precision and rounding only at the end, storing intermediate values rather than retyping them, checking an order of magnitude against a sensible expectation, and giving a final answer to a precision the data justifies are habits rather than knowledge. They are also the habits most visibly absent in a hurried Paper 1B.

06

The scientific investigation at Standard Level

The investigation is worth 20% of the Standard Level grade, is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each, is limited to 3,000 words, and is allocated around ten hours of class time. Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation carry equal weight. None of that is reduced for Standard Level candidates, which makes the investigation proportionally the biggest opportunity on the course for a student who finds examinations difficult.

The single best decision a Standard Level student makes is to choose a boring, measurable experiment. An investigation that produces clean data from a straightforward setup — a pendulum, a spring, a resistance against length, a cooling curve — can score full marks, because the criteria reward design, processing, justified conclusion and honest evaluation, not ambition. An investigation built around an interesting phenomenon that cannot be measured reliably with school equipment loses marks in research design before any data exists and cannot recover them later.

Research design is where the preparation pays. A clearly stated research question, a defined independent and dependent variable, identified controlled variables and a method detailed enough to repeat are what the criterion asks for, and all of it is written before entering the laboratory. That makes it the part of the investigation remote tutoring handles best: it is a conversation about what to vary, what to hold fixed, how many repeats, and over what range.

The limit on tutor involvement should be written down and given to the family before any investigation work begins. A tutor may discuss whether a question is measurable, point at a criterion and say which descriptor a current version meets, comment on uncertainty treatment and presentation conventions, and ask questions that make a student notice a gap. A tutor may not supply text or data, and may not return a rewritten report. The student signs an authenticity declaration and the work must be theirs.

07

Revision counted backwards from the May session

Standard Level physics revision fails for a scheduling reason rather than a motivation one. A student with six subjects and three internal assessments plans forwards: today I will revise physics. Three weeks later the themes revised are the ones that were comfortable, the gas laws and circuits have been avoided, and nobody has sat a timed paper. Counting backwards from the examination window fixes this, because it forces every week to have a named job.

The structure that works is simple. The last two weeks before the session are reserved for weaknesses already identified, not for new revision. The six weeks before that are one theme per week, each with a timed section of Paper 1 and a timed Paper 2 question, marked and returned. Before that, the investigation must be finished and submitted, because an unfinished investigation in the final term eats the revision weeks it cannot afford to take.

Mock examinations sit inside this calendar and should be treated as data rather than as a verdict. The useful output of a mock is not the grade but the breakdown: which themes lost marks, how many marks went to units and command terms rather than to physics, and where the clock ran out. A student who takes that breakdown seriously in January finishes the course in a different place from one who reads the grade and feels bad about it.

Ramadan sits inside the DP2 calendar and shifts earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. School hours shorten and energy patterns change, and Abu Dhabi families commonly move sessions to post-Iftar slots for the month. Because lessons run over video, that is a scheduling change rather than a pause. For examination dates themselves, use the source: the IB publishes session and results dates on ibo.org, and the school's Diploma coordinator will confirm the exact windows for a cohort.

Costs, permits and how lessons are delivered in Abu Dhabi

Published rates in this market are thin, so the figures here come from providers that publish their own prices and from Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey. They describe the market rather than IB Gram's fee. Qualified online subject tutors run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour: Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Bestimate puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits in the same survey are AED 180 to 350, with independent home tutors quoted to AED 500, because driving is inside the rate.

Standard Level generally sits below Higher Level across providers that publish a split, which makes a Standard Level booking one of the better-value interventions in a Diploma. The arithmetic a family should do is marks per dirham rather than dirhams per hour: six sessions aimed at unit conversion and command terms will often move a Standard Level grade further than twenty sessions of additional theory, and will cost a quarter as much.

On the legal position, two bodies do different jobs. The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain and publishes inspection ratings. Individual tutors are covered federally by the private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023; u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists a two-working-day completion time. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to a parent.

Delivery is stated the same way on every UAE page here. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or anywhere in the Emirates; a tutor travelling to a family's address is an India-only service. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video with screen sharing and a recording. For a Standard Level student, the practical gain is choice: a tutor selected for teaching this course well, in a slot that fits the bus timetable, with no travel premium inside the hourly rate.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities, and the session time that actually works

The constraint on a Standard Level physics session is attention, not geography. A student who has been in school since 7.30am and on a bus until 4pm has a limited window before the hour stops being useful. These are the communities Physics SL requests come from.

Khalifa City

School buses commonly deliver between 3.15pm and 4pm, and homework starts after that. A 5pm or 5.30pm session gets a student who can still think, which matters more at Standard Level than squeezing the earliest available slot.

Al Reef

A peripheral community with a long bus run and very little local Diploma-level science provision. Sessions here usually start at 6pm, and the reason families book online is that the realistic alternative is nothing.

Al Mushrif

Close to several long-established island schools, so students are frequently home by 3.30pm. One of the few Abu Dhabi areas where a 4pm weekday slot is genuinely workable rather than theoretically available.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa living inside the mainland school corridor, with short local distances. Families here often run two children in consecutive slots, which works only because nothing has to travel between the two lessons.

Al Reem Island

Tower housing with one causeway on and off, so the afternoon is unpredictable. Evening online sessions are the standard booking, and they are unaffected by whatever the causeway is doing at 5pm.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community with a long and variable commute. Consistency of session timing matters more here than anywhere else in the emirate, because a moved lesson tends to become a missed one.

Yas Island

Evenings here can be reshaped by events without notice. A video lesson does not care, which removes a recurring source of cancellation from a DP2 calendar that cannot afford lost weeks.

Al Ain

Under the same regulator as the capital, with its own international schools and a very small pool of resident science specialists. For Physics SL the practical choice there is an online subject specialist or a general tutor.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi island and Saadiyat

The island's established private schools and the Saadiyat campuses account for a large share of the emirate's Diploma science entries. Standard Level physics sets here tend to be the mixed groups described above, and families should check current subject offerings on ADEK's school listing before planning around them.

Khalifa City and the mainland corridor

The corridor from Khalifa City through Al Raha holds the emirate's densest group of international schools and the busiest bus network. Most Physics SL enquiries from Abu Dhabi originate here, and nearly all of them are shaped by bus arrival times.

  • Canadian International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy

Al Ain and the outer emirate

Al Ain falls under the same regulator as Abu Dhabi city and runs its own IB and British-curriculum schools. Local supply of Diploma science specialists is minimal, which makes remote delivery the default for a single-subject booking rather than a second-best option.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say what the grade is for

A Standard Level plan depends on the target. 'She needs a 5 and is not going to study physics' and 'he wants a 7 and is applying for architecture' produce different first months, and saying which one applies saves a term of generic sessions.

  2. 02

    Send one marked paper

A single marked assessment is enough to start. What a tutor reads is where the marks went: unit conversion, command terms, graph interpretation, arithmetic, or genuine content gaps. Those five have five different plans and very different timelines.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One 45-minute lesson over live video with the proposed tutor, no card details, no obligation. It runs on a real question from the student's own work, and it ends with the tutor naming the first three things the plan would change.

  4. 04

Fix a slot the student can actually use

Sessions are set on Gulf Standard Time around when the bus arrives and how much attention is left. For Al Reef and Mohammed Bin Zayed City that usually means 6pm; for the island neighbourhoods 4pm often works well.

    Build the calendar backwards

From the first session there is a written plan counted back from the examination window, with the investigation finished early and the final fortnight reserved for identified weaknesses only. Progress is read from marked returns rather than from impressions.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The syllabus boundary drawn clearly

Standard Level students are shown precisely which content is not theirs — relativity, rigid bodies, induction, quantum physics — so that no evening is spent revising Higher Level extensions that cannot be examined.

Marks per hour, not theory per hour

Sessions are sequenced by what is recoverable fastest: units, command terms, graph interpretation and arithmetic discipline before additional content. For a student with five other subjects, that sequencing is the whole value.

A written revision calendar

The final term is planned backwards from the examination window, with a named job for each period and a marked return as the evidence. Revision that is planned forwards reliably skips the hardest themes.

An honest view on dropping a level

Where a move from Higher Level is the right call, the evidence for it is laid out: which losses come from extensions and which are habits that would follow a student down. The decision stays with the school.

Investigation support with a stated limit

Help is discussion, criterion feedback and process coaching on the student's own work. No text and no data are supplied, and the boundary is given to the family in writing before the first investigation session.

Rates quoted with their source

Every AED figure here names the provider or survey that published it and the year. The market is quoted as the market, and IB Gram's own fee is confirmed in writing after a free trial lesson.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Is Physics SL a sensible choice if my child is not a scientist?+

For many students, yes, and the reason is that Standard Level physics is bounded. It runs 150 teaching hours across five themes without the Higher Level extensions, so finishing the syllabus properly is realistic alongside five other subjects. The honest comparison is with biology and chemistry rather than with a harder physics course: physics carries more arithmetic and rearrangement, biology carries more terminology, chemistry sits between them. A student who dislikes formula manipulation often does better in biology, and that is worth knowing before an option form is signed rather than in DP2.

Can my son move down from Physics HL to Physics SL partway through?+

Usually yes, and it is the commonest level change in a science subject, but the school decides and the Diploma coordinator has to agree it. The window is widest in the first term of DP1 and narrows through the second. Mechanically the move is gentle, because the Standard Level syllabus is contained within the Higher Level course: nothing new has to be learned, content simply stops being examinable. The decision should rest on where his marks are being lost, because losses to units and command terms will follow him down while losses on the extensions will not.

How long are the IB Physics Standard Level papers?+

Standard Level papers are shorter than their Higher Level counterparts in both components, and the exact timings for a given session should be confirmed with the school's Diploma coordinator rather than taken from a third-party page. What is stable is the weighting, and that is what should drive revision: Paper 1 carries 36% and comes in a multiple-choice part and a data-based part, Paper 2 carries 44% and is the extended-response paper, and the scientific investigation carries the remaining 20%. Paper 2 is the largest single component and the most consistently under-revised.

Does Physics SL satisfy the Diploma science requirement on its own?+

Yes. Every Diploma candidate must take a subject from Group 4, the sciences, and Physics at Standard Level satisfies that requirement in full. A student does not need a second science or a Higher Level science to complete the Diploma. What may require more is a specific university course: some programmes ask for two sciences, and some ask for a named science at Higher Level. That is a question about the shortlist rather than about the Diploma, and the answer is on each university's own admissions pages.

Which universities accept Physics SL rather than Physics HL?+

Many accept a science at Standard Level where a science is required at all, but the only reliable method is to read the published entry requirements for each specific course in the year of application. Engineering and physical-science programmes commonly specify physics at Higher Level, often with Analysis and Approaches mathematics alongside it. Architecture, design, business, law and several health-science routes are frequently satisfied by Standard Level or by any science. Nobody should summarise this for a family, because the requirement is stated by the university and varies between two courses at the same institution.

What grade is realistic in Physics SL with one session a week?+

It depends on where the marks are currently going, which is why an honest answer follows a diagnosis rather than preceding it. A student whose content understanding is sound and who loses marks to unit conversion, command terms and the clock has substantial room to move, because those are habits and habits change in weeks. A student who has not learned two of the five themes and has eight weeks left has a different problem, and should be told the number of hours it would actually take rather than sold a weekly slot and an implied outcome.

How do I tell whether the problem is physics or arithmetic?+

Look at a marked paper and read what was crossed out rather than the total. If the setup is right, the correct relationship was selected, and the error appears in the rearrangement, the unit conversion or the final rounding, the problem is arithmetic discipline and it is fixable in weeks. If the student could not choose a relationship, could not say what the question was about, or left the item blank, the problem is content. The two look identical in a grade and need completely different plans, which is why a tutor should ask for marked work before quoting anything.

How much time does the Physics SL investigation really take?+

The course allocates around ten hours of class time, and the report is limited to 3,000 words and marked out of twenty-four across four criteria. In practice most students spend more than ten hours, mostly on processing and writing rather than on measurement. The planning that saves the most time happens before the laboratory: a measurable research question, defined variables, a decided number of repeats and range. Students who improvise the design in the laboratory spend the extra hours twice, and still lose research-design marks they can never recover.

What should a Physics SL student be doing twelve weeks before the exams?+

One theme a week with a timed paper section each week, marked and returned, having already submitted the investigation. Twelve weeks out is too late to start new content and exactly right for structured coverage: five themes plus the data and graph skills gives six weeks of work, then four weeks of full timed papers, then a final fortnight on identified weaknesses only. The investigation should be finished well before this period, because an unfinished report in the final term consumes revision weeks that cannot be replaced.

Is Physics SL much harder than IGCSE 0625 Extended?+

Harder, but in two specific and manageable ways rather than across the board. The content overlaps substantially: mechanics, thermal physics, waves, electricity and basic nuclear physics all appear in both. What changes is the mathematics, which moves from substituting into a formula to rearranging it and resolving vectors, and the writing, which moves from one-line answers to multi-step explanations where the mark scheme awards each link. A student with a strong 0625 or 4PH1 grade has the foundation; a term of work on those two differences usually closes the gap.

Do Standard Level students need to memorise the data booklet?+

No, because it is supplied in the examinations, and that changes what the papers test. The examinable skill is selecting the right relationship for the situation and justifying why it applies, not recalling it. Students who treat the booklet as a safety net rather than a working tool lose marks because they have never practised finding things in it quickly or deciding between two similar-looking relationships. Deliberate practice with the booklet open, under time pressure, is worth several marks and takes very little teaching.

What does an online Physics SL tutor cost for an Abu Dhabi family?+

Market figures from providers that publish them put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour; Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase publishes AED 270, while Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits in that survey are AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors are quoted to AED 500, because driving is priced inside the hour. Standard Level generally sits below Higher Level. IB Gram confirms its own fee in writing after a free trial lesson rather than publishing a headline rate.

Can sessions be moved around Ramadan and school examination weeks?+

Yes, and planning the change in advance works much better than cancelling. School hours shorten during Ramadan and energy patterns shift, so Abu Dhabi families commonly move a weekly slot to a post-Iftar time for the month. Because lessons run over live video, that is a calendar change with no travel consequences. The same applies to school examination weeks: the useful move is usually to keep the slot and change what it is used for, spending the hour on the school's assessment content rather than on the longer plan.

My daughter is at school in Al Ain. Is online really the only option for Physics SL?+

It is the only option that reliably gets a subject specialist. Al Ain sits under the same regulator as Abu Dhabi city and has its own international schools, but the resident pool of tutors who teach Diploma physics on the current guide is very small, so a local search usually returns a general science tutor. A video lesson removes the constraint entirely: the choice becomes who teaches the course best in a slot that works, rather than who lives within reach. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE in any case.

Does Physics SL include relativity, induction or quantum physics?+

No. Those are Higher Level extensions and they are not on the Standard Level syllabus, along with rigid body mechanics and the extended treatment of gravitational and electric potential. This matters practically rather than academically: Standard Level students regularly find these topics in revision videos and second-hand books and spend evenings on material that cannot be examined. Checking the Higher Level markings in the current subject guide through the school, and then deleting the extension chapters from the revision plan, is often the most useful single hour of a first month.

One marked paper tells us where the Standard Level marks are going

If your child sits Physics at Standard Level in an Abu Dhabi school, the first step is one marked assessment and a short message saying what the grade is for. A free 45-minute trial lesson with the proposed tutor follows, over live video, with no card details taken. What should come back is a clear read on whether the marks are being lost to units and arithmetic, to command terms and answer length, to graph interpretation, or to content that was never learned — and a written plan counted backwards from the May session rather than forwards from today.
