IB DP Chemistry SL Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Chemistry SL tutor in Abu Dhabi who leaves a paper trail instead of an impression. Every session adds something a parent in Khalifa City or Al Reem Island can read: a re-marked script with the lost marks circled, a mark log by theme, a dated version of the investigation, and a note saying what the next hour will fix. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • A mark log by theme, started from the student's own school work
  • Re-marked scripts with each lost mark attributed to a cause
  • Dated investigation versions, never text supplied by a tutor
  • One free 45-minute trial lesson, no card details required

Chemistry SL goes wrong quietly, which is why it needs a record

A Chemistry Standard Level grade rarely collapses. It drifts. A 6 in the first DP1 assessment becomes a 5 at the end of the year and a 4 in the January mock, and at no point is there a single event a family can point at. School reports describe effort and participation honestly and usefully, but they are not designed to tell a parent that eleven marks on the last paper went to unit conversion and command terms rather than to chemistry. Without that information, a family cannot tell whether the problem is serious or trivial.

This page is built around fixing that specific gap. Everything a tutor does with a Standard Level chemistry student here produces a document: a script from the student's own school assessment re-marked with every lost mark attributed to a cause, a running mark log organised by theme, a dated version history of the scientific investigation, and a two-line note after each session saying what was worked on and what comes next. A parent should never have to ask whether tutoring is working. They should be able to open a folder and read the answer.

That approach suits Standard Level chemistry particularly well, because the subject's recoverable marks are unusually visible once someone looks for them. Standard Level is 150 teaching hours across three Structure themes and three Reactivity themes, without the Higher Level content. A great deal of what separates a 4 from a 6 is not chemistry knowledge at all: it is mole arithmetic done without a consistent layout, answers given to a precision the data does not support, questions answered at the wrong length for their command term, and graphs read correctly then described wrongly.

Those four things are diagnosable from one marked script, and they are fixable in weeks rather than terms. Which is why the first month of any sensible arrangement is diagnostic rather than instructional: find out where the marks are going, sort the losses into unlearned content on one side and habit on the other, and attack the habit side first because it returns more marks per hour of a student's time.

Abu Dhabi contributes its usual constraint, which is timing rather than distance. Students here come home from school across the island and the mainland corridor at different times, and a Standard Level chemistry session needs a student with concentration left. Because lessons run over live video, the family in Al Reef and the family in Al Mushrif can hold the same weekly slot with the same tutor. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; a tutor travelling to a family's address is a service available only in India.

What follows is the detail: what sits in the evidence file and what each part is for, which content Standard Level students should stop revising, how a baseline diagnosis is built, what movement looks like week by week, the three mark clusters worth attacking first, how the investigation's version history protects both the student and the family, how to read a mock result, and what a parent should refuse to accept from anybody selling tutoring.

At a glance

  • Standard Level is 150 hours without the Higher Level chemistry content
  • Paper 1 is 36%, Paper 2 is 44%, the investigation is 20%
  • A diagnosis should be in writing within four weeks
  • Habit losses move faster than content losses, so they go first
  • All UAE lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Standard Level chemistry requests in Abu Dhabi come from Diploma families, but the evidence that explains the difficulty usually sits in earlier programmes. Old reports and old scripts are free diagnostic material and almost nobody uses them.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Chemistry at Standard Level runs 150 teaching hours and is assessed by Paper 1 at 36%, in a multiple-choice part and a data-based part, Paper 2 at 44%, and the scientific investigation at 20%, with a data booklet supplied in the examinations.

In Abu Dhabi cohorts the Standard Level chemistry set often contains students who moved down from Higher Level during DP1. Those students carry a particular evidence problem: their old marked work was against a harder syllabus, so a mark log has to be restarted rather than continued, or the trend line is meaningless.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Integrated sciences assessed against four criteria rather than by percentage. The criterion reports are more informative than a percentage would have been, because they separate knowledge from inquiry from processing, which is exactly the separation a Diploma diagnosis needs.

Where an Abu Dhabi student has come through the same school's MYP, five years of criterion reports sit in the parent portal unread. They usually predict the Diploma difficulty accurately: weak processing and evaluating in MYP tends to become weak data handling in the Diploma, and it is visible years earlier.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 and Pearson International GCSE 4CH1 are the usual routes in. Both cover particles, bonding, the periodic table, acids and bases, rates and introductory organic chemistry, and both reward a memorisation study method that the Diploma then stops rewarding.

An IGCSE transcript is useful evidence for a different reason than families assume. A strong grade achieved by memorising predicts a Standard Level chemistry drift in DP1, because the method does not transfer. Knowing that in September rather than January is worth a term.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Course certificates and the Career-related Programme

Some Abu Dhabi schools offer individual course certificates or the Career-related Programme alongside the full Diploma. A student can sit Chemistry SL within either, with identical papers and an identical investigation, but with a different surrounding workload.

Where there is no Extended Essay competing for DP2 weeks, the investigation can and should be finished early. That single scheduling decision removes the commonest cause of a lost revision term, and it shows up in the evidence file as a completed report in the autumn rather than a draft in February.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Abu Dhabi families often book two or three Diploma subjects at once, and the evidence approach works the same way in each. These are the courses most frequently requested alongside Chemistry SL.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Three Structure and three Reactivity themes, assessed by Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and one scientific investigation at 20%. Standard Level omits the Higher Level content, which concentrates in energy cycles, entropy, quantitative equilibrium, weak acids, electrochemistry and organic mechanisms.

Biology

SL and HL

Four organising themes plus the investigation. The most common partner for Chemistry SL in Abu Dhabi, and the pairing that most often puts two internal assessments into the same DP2 term, which a shared calendar prevents and an unshared one does not.

Physics

SL and HL

Five themes with Higher Level extensions. Shares the uncertainty, significant-figure and graph conventions with chemistry, so a single data-handling block visibly moves the mark log in both subjects at once.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Statistics and modelling with technology assumed. The usual mathematics pairing for a Standard Level chemistry student, and the reason rearrangement and index work sometimes has to be built inside the chemistry hour.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

Algebra and calculus, with one paper sat without a calculator. Students in AA generally find the mole and concentration arithmetic routine, which means the chemistry sessions can stay on chemistry.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

SL and HL

Anatomy, physiology, energy systems and training, plus an investigation. A common Group 4 companion for Abu Dhabi students aiming at physiotherapy, and it reuses the metabolic chemistry content directly.

Business Management

SL and HL

Organisation, human resources, finance, marketing and operations. A frequent Diploma companion for students taking chemistry to keep a science route open rather than because it is the plan.

Psychology

SL and HL

Biological, cognitive and sociocultural approaches with research methods throughout. Shares chemistry's demand for precise use of evidence, and the research-methods content rewards the same data literacy.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL

An interdisciplinary course satisfying either Group 3 or Group 4. Students weighing a lighter science route against Chemistry SL compare these two most often, and the honest comparison is about assessment style.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and the prescribed-title essay. Chemistry gives a student usable knowledge questions about models known to be simplifications and about what counts as evidence in a laboratory.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover almost every Standard Level chemistry request. All run over live video, none involves travel to a UAE address, and each produces the same written record; what differs is how long the record runs for.

Weekly one-to-one with a running record

The default: a fixed slot through DP1 and DP2 with work marked between sessions, a mark log by theme, and a short note after each hour. The record is the point. It makes the four-week and twelve-week reviews real decisions rather than conversations, and it gives a student something to look at other than a grade.

  • A fixed weekly slot held for the same student
  • Marked work returned between sessions rather than read aloud in them
  • A mark log by theme and by cause of loss
  • A two-line written note after every session

A four-week diagnostic block

For families who want the diagnosis before committing to a term. Four sessions, in which old scripts are re-marked, a baseline log is built from the student's own school work, the three biggest mark clusters are identified, and the investigation position is assessed. It ends with a written document whether or not anything else is booked.

  • Old assessments re-marked against published command terms
  • A ranked list of topics by marks lost, not by syllabus order
  • An honest read on the investigation timeline
  • A written diagnosis that belongs to the family either way

An investigation support block

A short series timed to the school's own internal deadlines rather than to the examination, covering whether a research question is measurable, safe and permitted, and giving criterion feedback on the student's own drafts. Each draft is dated and kept, which protects the student if authenticity is ever questioned.

  • Design checked before laboratory time is committed
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback with a mark estimate
  • Dated draft history retained by the student
  • The academic-honesty boundary given to the family in writing

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What the evidence file contains, and what each part is for

  • A mark log by date, mark and theme, baselined on the student's own work
  • Re-marked scripts with every lost mark attributed to a cause
  • A dated investigation draft history, kept by the student
  • A two-line session note naming what is next
  • All four readable by a parent without asking for an interpretation

The file has four parts and none of them is elaborate. The first is a mark log: a simple table of every assessed piece of work with its date, its mark, and the theme it covered. It exists so that a trend can be seen rather than inferred, and so that a parent reading it in January can tell whether the December mock was an outlier or a pattern. Baselines come from the student's own school assessments, not from an entry test designed to flatter.

The second part is re-marked scripts. A tutor takes the student's own assessment and marks it again, with every lost mark attributed to one of four causes: content not learned, arithmetic or unit error, command-term mismatch, or data and graph interpretation. The attribution is the useful bit. A total of 28 out of 45 tells a family almost nothing; the same script showing nine marks lost to units and command terms tells them the problem is weeks away from being fixed rather than years.

The third is the investigation version history. Every draft the student produces is dated and kept, along with the feedback given on it. That serves two purposes: it shows a parent the work developing rather than appearing, and it provides a record of what help was given, which matters if a school ever asks about authenticity. A student who can show six dated drafts with comments about criteria is in a very strong position.

The fourth is the session note, which is two lines written after every hour: what was worked on, and what the next session will fix. It is the cheapest part of the file and the one that most reliably exposes a drifting arrangement. Four consecutive notes saying 'revision of Reactivity 2' mean nobody has a plan, and a parent reading them will see that long before a report card confirms it.

02

The Standard Level boundary: content to stop revising

The first entry in many evidence files is a deletion. Standard Level chemistry students regularly revise Higher Level content, because it appears in videos, in second-hand books and in notes shared by friends who sit the harder course. Every hour spent there is an hour that cannot be examined, and over a term it adds up to a meaningful amount of a student's finite revision time.

The Higher Level content sits inside the same six themes, which is why it is easy to encounter by accident. Energy cycles and entropy and spontaneity in Reactivity 1 are Higher Level. Quantitative treatment of the extent of reaction, including equilibrium constants, is Higher Level in Reactivity 2. Weak acid and buffer calculations, electrode potentials, electrolysis arithmetic and the organic reaction mechanisms are Higher Level in Reactivity 3. Spectroscopic identification and stereoisomerism are Higher Level additions in the Structure themes.

A Standard Level student still meets the ideas in a qualitative form in several of those places, which is where the confusion comes from. Standard Level chemistry covers enthalpy change and its measurement, rate of reaction and the factors that affect it, the position of equilibrium and how it responds to change, and acids and bases including pH as a scale. What it does not require is the quantitative machinery: no equilibrium constant calculations, no buffer arithmetic, no Born-Haber style cycles, no mechanism diagrams with curly arrows.

The practical step is to confirm the Higher Level markings in the current subject guide through the school and then physically remove those chapters from the revision plan. Students find this hard to do, because deleting material feels like cutting corners. Framing it as reallocating hours to examinable content usually helps, and the mark log makes the benefit visible within a month.

03

Building the baseline in the first four weeks

The first four sessions produce a diagnosis, not progress, and saying so in advance prevents a specific disappointment. A family that expects a grade to move in week three will conclude the arrangement has failed; a family that expects a written diagnosis in week four can judge it fairly. The diagnosis is the thing being paid for in the first month, and it should be good enough to be useful even if nothing else is ever booked.

It is built from the student's own material. Two school assessments, a mock if one exists, any returned laboratory work, and whatever exists of the investigation. A tutor re-marks a selection against the published command terms and the mark scheme conventions rather than for general correctness, because the gap between what a student knows and what they score is usually sitting in the wording. Then the losses are attributed, counted and ranked.

The ranking is where the plan comes from, and it is ranked by marks per hour of work rather than by syllabus order. Unit and mole errors come first because they are numerous and quick. Command-term mismatches come second for the same reason. Data and graph interpretation comes third. Unlearned content comes last, not because it matters least but because it takes longest, and a student who has gained eight marks of confidence from the quick wins learns the hard content better than one who started with it.

By the end of week four the file should contain a baseline log with at least two or three honest figures, three or four re-marked scripts, a ranked topic list, a note on the investigation position relative to the school's deadlines, and a plan for the next eight weeks. If a tutor cannot produce that, the right response is to stop rather than to continue and hope, and a family should say so at the outset so the expectation is mutual.

04

What movement looks like, week by week

Progress in Standard Level chemistry is not smooth and does not need to be. It arrives in distinct phases with different shapes, and knowing the shape in advance is what stops a family panicking in week seven or relaxing too early in week five. The phases are predictable enough to put in a table, and the table is the most useful single thing in the file during DP1.

The first phase, roughly weeks one to four, shows no movement in the mark log at all and should not. It fills with diagnosis. The second phase, weeks five to ten, usually shows a quick gain as unit, mole and command-term losses are closed, and that gain can look dramatic: five to ten marks on a paper recovered without learning any new chemistry. Families sometimes over-read this as a transformation. It is the easy marks arriving, and it stops.

The third phase, roughly weeks eleven to twenty, is the flat one, and it is where arrangements get abandoned unnecessarily. The quick wins are banked, the remaining losses are content and reasoning, and content moves slowly. A log that plateaus here with session notes showing specific themes being worked through is functioning normally. A log that plateaus here with session notes saying 'general revision' is not, and that is the distinction the record exists to make visible.

The fourth phase is DP2, where the log changes character. Topic exercises are replaced by timed full papers, the investigation closes, and the numbers become noisier because a full paper tests everything at once. The useful read in this phase is the breakdown rather than the total: whether the marks lost are still clustered where they were in October, and whether the clusters are shrinking. A family looking at that table in February can make a genuine decision about the final term.

CHEMISTRY SL — WHAT THE RECORD SHOULD SHOW AT EACH STAGE

05

The three mark clusters worth attacking first

Across Standard Level chemistry scripts the recoverable losses concentrate in three places, and a tutor who attacks them in order produces visible movement in the log inside six weeks. The first is the mole and its family: mass to moles, concentration and dilution, gas volumes, limiting reagent, percentage yield and titration. The errors are rarely conceptual. They are an unbalanced ratio used without checking, a division where a multiplication was needed, a volume left in cubic centimetres, or a molar mass taken without the water of crystallisation.

The repair is a single layout used every time: write what is given with units, convert to moles, apply the balanced equation's ratio explicitly, convert back to what the question asked with units. Students resist this because it feels slower, and it is slower for about two weeks. Then it is faster and more accurate, and it protects partial credit because an examiner can follow a correct method through a slipped calculation.

The second cluster is command-term mismatch. 'State' wants one line. 'Outline' wants a brief account. 'Explain' wants reasons, and the mark scheme awards each link in the chain, so a correct one-line answer to a three-mark 'explain' collects one mark. 'Deduce' wants a conclusion from given information. 'Compare' wants both sides addressed explicitly. There are not many of these terms, they are published, and matching answer length to term is mechanical. It is also worth several marks a paper and almost never practised.

The third cluster is data and graph work, which appears in Paper 1B, in Paper 2 and again in the investigation. Reading a value from a graph, finding a gradient and saying what it physically represents with units, deciding on an appropriate number of significant figures from the raw data, and spotting an anomalous result and saying what to do about it are all examined. Students get the number and lose the sentence. Practising the sentence is the fix, and it transfers straight into the investigation's data analysis criterion.

06

The investigation, and why the draft history matters twice

The scientific investigation carries 20% of the Standard Level grade, is marked out of twenty-four across four equally weighted criteria, is limited to 3,000 words, and has around ten hours of class time allocated. In the evidence approach it is treated as a sequence of dated drafts rather than as a single deliverable, and that choice does two separate jobs.

The first job is quality. Research design is the criterion that decides most chemistry investigation marks, and it is decided before measurement begins. A dated first version containing only a research question, the independent and dependent variables, the controlled variables and a proposed method lets a tutor say whether the question is measurable, whether the school is likely to approve it, and whether the reagents and equipment exist, while there is still time to change it. Students who skip this stage lose design marks that no later writing recovers.

The second job is protection. A student who can produce six dated drafts, each with a record of the feedback received, is in a strong position if a school ever asks how the work developed. A student who submits a polished report with no history is not accused of anything, but has nothing to show either. The boundary on help should be given to the family in writing at the start: a tutor may discuss whether a question is measurable and safe, point at a criterion and say which descriptor a version meets, comment on uncertainty treatment and presentation conventions, and ask questions that expose a gap. A tutor may not supply text or data, and may not return a rewritten report.

The timing advice is unglamorous and worth repeating. Finish the investigation early. A report still in progress in the final term consumes revision weeks that cannot be replaced, and it does so at exactly the point where the mark log needs timed papers rather than laboratory work. Families who book an investigation block in DP2 autumn almost never need a crisis block in spring.

07

Reading a mock result without over-reacting to it

A DP2 mock grade is the moment most families decide something, and it is the moment they are most likely to decide the wrong thing. A single mock is one data point, sat under unfamiliar conditions, often covering content taught unevenly, and marked to a boundary a school has chosen rather than one the IB has published. Treating it as a prediction is a mistake in both directions: a good mock can produce complacency, and a bad one can produce a panic that costs a term of sensible work.

The useful output of a mock is the breakdown, and it is usually available for the asking. Which themes lost marks. How many marks went to arithmetic, units and command terms rather than to chemistry. Whether the paper was finished. Whether the data-based questions were stronger or weaker than the recall ones. That information is a plan; the grade on the front is a mood. A tutor should be able to produce the breakdown from the script within one session, and it should go into the file next to the log.

Where a mock does carry real signal is in clock management and in stamina, because those are the two things a short assessment cannot test. A student who ran out of time has a fixable, mechanical problem and should sit two more timed papers before anyone discusses content. A student who finished comfortably and lost marks evenly across the paper has a content problem, and the plan should look completely different.

The comparison that actually matters is the mock against the student's own earlier log, not against the cohort or against a target. A student who has gone from losing eleven marks on units and command terms to losing four, while total marks rose only slightly because new content was examined, is progressing well and looks stalled on a grade. Only the file shows that, which is the entire argument for keeping one.

08

What a parent should refuse to accept

  • No promised grades, no mark-gain figures, no university places
  • No statistic without its n, its date and its method
  • No claim of approval or accreditation from a regulator or an examination board
  • No offer to supply a finished investigation, essay or coursework
  • Every AED figure attributed to the source that published it

Because this page argues for evidence, it should also be specific about what counts as the absence of it. Four claims are worth refusing outright, from any tutoring service in this market including this one, and a family that holds that line will avoid most of the ways tutoring money gets wasted in the UAE.

The first is a promised outcome. No tutor can promise a 6, a specific mark gain or a university place, because the examination is marked by the IB and the work is done by the student. Anyone promising one is either describing a refund policy they should publish in full on the same page or making a claim they cannot honour. The second is a statistic without its arithmetic: a satisfaction percentage, an average score gain or a proportion of students achieving something, quoted without the number of students, the dates and the method. Those numbers are unverifiable by design.

The third is a regulatory claim. No tutoring service should describe itself as approved, accredited or licensed by ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson unless it holds that specific permit and can show the number. A KHDA educational services permit is a particular thing issued to training institutes with premises; a MoHRE private tuition work permit belongs to an individual tutor. Neither makes an agency accredited by a board. IB Gram holds no such accreditation and claims none.

The fourth is an offer to produce assessed work. Any service that will supply a finished investigation, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay is selling a student an academic honesty investigation with a report attached. A tutor teaches, discusses, gives criterion feedback and coaches process. Everything submitted must be the student's own, and a service that blurs that line is not a cheaper option; it is a different and much worse product.

09

Costs, permits and delivery in Abu Dhabi

Market figures here come from providers that publish their own prices and from Bestimate's 2026 Dubai tutoring cost survey, and they describe the market rather than IB Gram's fee. Qualified online subject tutors run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour: Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Bestimate puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. In-home visits in the same survey sit at AED 180 to 350, with independent home tutors quoted to AED 500, because the driving is inside the rate.

Standard Level generally sits below Higher Level across providers that publish a split, which makes the arithmetic a family should do straightforward. Four to six sessions aimed at mole arithmetic and command terms will usually move a Standard Level grade further than twenty sessions of additional content, and will cost a fraction as much. That is the practical value of a diagnosis: it tells a family which of those two things to buy.

On the legal position, two bodies do different jobs. The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain and publishes inspection ratings. Individual tutors fall under the federal private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023; u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years to applicants including registered school teachers, public and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and MoHRE's service page lists a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule, so no figure should be quoted to a parent.

Delivery is stated the same way on every UAE page here. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or anywhere in the Emirates; a tutor travelling to a family's address is an India-only service. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video with screen sharing and a recording, which has one incidental advantage for the approach on this page: the written record is easier to keep, share and read when every piece of work is already a file rather than a page in a bag.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities and the slot a Standard Level session can actually use

The evidence file shows something families rarely expect: sessions booked too early in the afternoon produce less movement in the mark log than sessions booked an hour later. Attention is the variable, and in this emirate attention is decided by the school run.

Khalifa City

Buses from island and corridor schools arrive between about 3.15pm and 4pm. Mark logs from 5pm slots in this community consistently move faster than those from 4pm slots, which is an argument for the later booking rather than a preference.

Al Reem Island

Tower housing behind a single causeway, with an unpredictable afternoon. Evening online slots are the standard pattern here, and their consistency is what makes a weekly record possible at all.

Al Mushrif

Minutes from several established island schools, with students frequently home by 3.30pm. One of the few Abu Dhabi communities where a 4pm session genuinely works, and therefore the easiest hour of the week to secure.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa living inside the mainland school corridor. Families here commonly run two siblings in consecutive slots, and the shared calendar is what stops two internal assessments landing in the same fortnight.

Al Reef

A peripheral community with a long bus run and almost no local Diploma-level science provision. Sessions start at 6pm or later, and the realistic local alternative is a general tutor rather than a chemistry specialist.

Saadiyat Island

Long internal distances and a well-known Diploma cohort. Evening slots dominate, and requests from this area are most often about the investigation timeline rather than about content.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community with a long, variable commute. Consistency of timing matters most here, because a moved session usually becomes a missing week in the record rather than a rescheduled one.

Al Ain

Under the same regulator as the capital, with its own international schools and very few resident chemistry specialists. Remote delivery is the practical default, and it makes a weekly written record easier to keep than a travelling arrangement ever did.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi island and Saadiyat

The island's established private schools and the Saadiyat campuses hold a large share of the emirate's Diploma science entries. Reporting cycles differ between them, which matters for a mark log: the baseline has to come from the student's own assessments, not from a comparison across schools.

Al Ain falls under the same regulator as Abu Dhabi city and runs its own IB and British-curriculum schools. With almost no local specialist supply, families there rely on a written record more heavily, because there is no informal network to check a tutor against.

  • Al Ain International School
  • Liwa International School
  • Emirates National Schools

Schools are named only as context for the Abu Dhabi schooling environment families ask about. No affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with any school is implied, and current subject offerings should be verified on ADEK's own school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the last two marked assessments

Not a description of the problem — the scripts. A re-marked script is the only thing that distinguishes a chemistry gap from an arithmetic habit, and the two have completely different timelines and completely different costs to fix.

  2. 02

Say what the school's next three deadlines are

Internal assessment dates, mock windows and reporting dates. A plan built against the school's calendar works; a plan built against a generic two-year timeline collides with the school's and loses.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One 45-minute lesson over live video with the proposed tutor, no card details and no obligation. It runs on a real question from the student's own work and ends with a first read on where the marks are going.

  4. 04

Agree that week four produces a document

A written diagnosis: baseline log, re-marked scripts, a ranked topic list, and the investigation position. Agreeing this at the start makes the four-week review a decision rather than a conversation about feelings.

  5. 05

Review the file, not the impression, at week twelve

Read the log and the session notes together. A plateau with specific themes named is normal; a plateau with notes saying 'general revision' is a drifting arrangement, and the right response is to change it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A record a parent can read without help

A mark log, re-marked scripts, dated investigation drafts and a two-line note per session. Nothing in the file needs interpreting by the person who wrote it, which is the whole point of keeping it.

Losses attributed to a cause

Every lost mark is sorted into content, arithmetic, command term or data interpretation. A total tells a family nothing; an attribution tells them whether the fix is four weeks or two terms, and what it will cost.

The Standard Level boundary enforced

Higher Level chemistry is removed from the revision plan explicitly, so no evening goes on equilibrium constants, buffers, electrode arithmetic or mechanism diagrams that cannot be examined at this level.

An honest account of the flat phase

The gain from habit losses closing arrives early and then stops. Families are told that in advance, so the normal plateau at weeks eleven to twenty is not mistaken for failure and a working arrangement is not abandoned.

Investigation drafts dated and kept

A version history improves the work and protects the student, because a dated sequence of drafts with recorded feedback shows how a report developed. No text and no data are ever supplied by a tutor.

Claims a family should refuse, named

No promised grades, no statistics without n and method, no regulator accreditation, no offer to produce assessed work, and every AED figure attributed to the source that published it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What should a Chemistry SL parent be able to read after four weeks?+

Four things. A baseline mark log with two or three honest figures taken from the student's own school assessments rather than from an entry test. Three or four re-marked scripts with every lost mark attributed to content, arithmetic, command term or data interpretation. A topic list ranked by marks lost rather than by syllabus order. And a note on where the investigation stands relative to the school's own deadlines. Agreeing in advance that week four produces that document turns the first review into a decision rather than a conversation about whether everyone feels positive.

Which chemistry topics should a Standard Level student stop revising?+

The Higher Level content inside the same themes, which is easy to meet by accident in videos and shared notes. That means energy cycles and entropy and spontaneity, quantitative equilibrium constant work, weak acid and buffer calculations, electrode potentials and electrolysis arithmetic, organic mechanisms with curly arrows, stereoisomerism, and spectroscopic identification by mass spectrometry, infrared and proton NMR. Standard Level still meets several of those ideas qualitatively, which is where the confusion comes from. Confirm the markings in the current subject guide through the school and then remove those chapters from the plan.

How do I tell whether a 4 is a content problem or a technique problem?+

From a marked script rather than from a grade. If the setup is right, the correct approach was chosen, and the error appears in the arithmetic, the units, the rounding or the length of the answer, it is technique and it moves in four to six weeks of strict marking. If questions were left blank, or the student could not say what was being asked, it is content and it takes a term or more. The two produce identical grades and need completely different plans, which is why no tutor should quote a session count before seeing the work.

Does the Standard Level investigation carry fewer marks than the Higher Level one?+

No, and this surprises most families. The scientific investigation is worth 20% of the grade at both levels, is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each — research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation — is limited to 3,000 words, and has around ten hours of class time allocated at both levels. Proportionally that makes it a larger opportunity for a Standard Level student, particularly one who finds examinations difficult, because it is the one component where time and care rather than speed under pressure determine the mark.

How should we use the DP2 mock chemistry result?+

As a breakdown, not a grade. Ask for the script and look at which themes lost marks, how many marks went to arithmetic, units and command terms rather than to chemistry, whether the paper was finished, and whether the data-based questions were stronger than the recall ones. A student who ran out of time has a mechanical problem fixable with two more timed papers. A student who finished and lost marks evenly has a content problem needing a different plan. The number on the front is a mood; the breakdown is a plan.

Is Chemistry SL enough for a biology, nursing or nutrition degree?+

Frequently yes, but the requirement is set by each programme and has to be read on that university's own admissions pages in the year of application. Many life-science, nursing and allied-health courses ask for a science at Standard Level or for biology specifically, with chemistry desirable rather than required. Others name chemistry at Higher Level, particularly in medicine, pharmacy and some biochemistry routes. Two courses at the same institution can differ. Nobody should summarise this for a family, and nobody should suggest that tutoring changes a published prerequisite.

What does a re-marked script show that a school report does not?+

Where the marks went, and why. A report describes effort, participation and attainment honestly and is not designed to tell a parent that eleven marks on the last paper were lost to unit conversion and answer length rather than to chemistry. A re-marked script attributes every lost mark to a cause, which converts an anxious conversation into an arithmetic one: nine marks of habit is a six-week problem, nine marks of unlearned content is a two-term problem, and the family can decide what to spend on which.

How long before the grade actually moves?+

Expect no movement in the first four weeks, because that period is diagnosis. A visible gain usually arrives between weeks five and ten as unit, mole and command-term losses close, and it can be five to ten marks on a paper without any new chemistry being learned. Then a plateau from roughly week eleven to week twenty, because the remaining losses are content and content moves slowly. A family told this in advance does not abandon a working arrangement during the flat phase, which is when most arrangements are abandoned.

My son understands it in the lesson and has forgotten it by the test. Why?+

Because understanding in the presence of an explanation is not the same as retrieving without one, and because chemistry taught in the first term of DP1 is examined eighteen months later. The remedy is retrieval rather than review: short weekly returns to older material in question form, with the notes closed. Ten minutes a week is enough, and it is the first habit students drop when a deadline arrives. In a session, the practical version is making the student do the talking, which is uncomfortable for about three weeks and then works.

Should we book two sessions a week in DP1 for Chemistry SL?+

Usually not. One well-used hour closes the habit clusters, keeps pace with school teaching and keeps the investigation off the critical path, and the work that actually moves marks happens between sessions rather than inside them. A second weekly hour in DP1 often goes under-used, because the student has not had time to attempt the work the hour would be built on. The exception is a student genuinely behind on content, where a short intensive block early is better value than a long thin arrangement across a year.

What claims should I refuse to believe from a tutoring service?+

Four. A promised grade, mark gain or university place, because the IB marks the examination and the student does the work. A statistic without its number of students, its dates and its method, because such figures are unverifiable by design. A claim of approval, accreditation or licensing by ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson without a permit number to show. And any offer to produce a finished investigation, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay, which sells a student an academic honesty investigation rather than a grade.

What does Chemistry SL tuition cost in Abu Dhabi, and what moves the figure?+

Providers that publish rates put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai survey; Unitors publishes IB from AED 200 and TutorChase publishes AED 270. In-home visits in that survey are AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors are quoted to AED 500, because travel sits inside the rate. Level moves the figure, format moves it more, and the final term before the session moves both price and availability. IB Gram confirms its own fee in writing after a free trial lesson.

Can my daughter still reach a 6 in Chemistry SL if we start in DP2?+

It depends entirely on what a marked script shows, which is why the honest answer follows a diagnosis rather than a sales conversation. A DP2 student whose content is broadly in place and who is losing marks to arithmetic, units and command terms has real room, because those clusters move in weeks. A DP2 student who has not learned two of the six themes and has no investigation has a different problem, and should be told the number of hours it would genuinely take rather than given an encouraging number and a weekly slot.

What should I ask a tutor about permits before booking in Abu Dhabi?+

Whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and whether they currently teach at the school your child attends. The permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, so there is no cost reason for a tutor not to hold one; anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. On the second question, press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates Abu Dhabi school staff may not take paid private students from their own school.

Does the data booklet change how a Standard Level student should revise?+

Substantially. It is supplied in the examinations along with the periodic table, and it carries constants, relationships and reference data. That means time spent memorising what is printed in it is wasted, and time spent practising with it open is not. The examinable skill becomes selecting the right relationship for a situation and justifying the choice under time pressure. Students who treat it as a safety net rather than a working tool lose marks because they have never had to find anything in it quickly or decide between two similar-looking entries.

Two marked scripts, and a diagnosis you can read

If your child sits Chemistry at Standard Level in an Abu Dhabi school, send the evidence rather than the worry: the last two marked assessments, the school's next three internal deadlines, and two workable weekly slots on Gulf Standard Time. A free 45-minute trial lesson with the proposed tutor follows, with no card details taken. Four weeks later there should be a document — a baseline log, re-marked scripts with every lost mark attributed, a ranked topic list and an honest read on the investigation — whether or not anything further is booked.
