IB DP Biology SL Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Biology SL tutor in Abu Dhabi should leave a paper trail, and this page is about that trail: the marked questions, the error log, the investigation drafts and the fortnightly written note that together tell you whether your money is doing anything. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so a family in Al Mushrif or Masdar City keeps the same slot all year without a drive. The trial session is free and it ends with a written list of what the tutor found.

  • A written note to the parent after every Standard Level Biology session
  • Marked questions logged by error type, not by topic alone
  • Investigation drafts reviewed criterion by criterion, feedback only
  • Free first session that ends with a named list of gaps

How you can tell whether Standard Level Biology tuition is working

Most families discover a tutoring plan has failed when the school report arrives, which in Abu Dhabi is usually twice a year. That is far too late to act on. Six months is two terms of a two-year Diploma, and in Standard Level Biology it is long enough for a student to slide from a 5 to a 4 while every weekly session felt perfectly productive. The problem is not the tutor's effort. The problem is that nobody wrote anything down that could be compared with anything else.

An evidence trail for Standard Level Biology is not complicated and it is not expensive, because it is built from work the student is already producing. Marked questions exist. Investigation drafts exist. Mock papers exist. What is usually missing is the sorting: a record that says this mark was lost to a recall gap in cell respiration, that one to misreading evaluate as describe, that one to running out of time on the last structured question. Sorted like that, four weeks of work tells you what six months of impressions cannot.

There are four ways a Biology mark goes missing and they need different fixes. Recall gaps are the slowest to repair and the easiest to spot. Command-term errors are the fastest to repair and the hardest to see, because the answer reads fluently and scores two out of five. Data-handling losses live almost entirely in the data-based half of Paper 1 and in the investigation's analysis criterion. Timing losses look like knowledge gaps on the final page of a paper and are nothing of the sort. A tutor who cannot tell you which of the four your child is losing to has not diagnosed anything.

The investigation produces the clearest evidence of all, because it arrives in drafts. A research question, a method, a first data set, a first full report. Each draft is a dated artefact that can be read against four published criteria worth six marks each. A tutor's job across that sequence is to teach the design, teach the statistics, explain exactly what each criterion rewards, and give feedback on what the student has written. The words stay the student's own. The drafts stay as evidence of whose work it is.

This page sets out what that record looks like in practice: what goes in the fortnightly note, how a marked paper is sorted, what the draft sequence should show, what grade movement is realistic over what period, and what to do when six weeks of evidence shows nothing has shifted. Lessons run online over live video. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are a service we run only in India.

At a glance

  • Four error types: recall, command term, data handling, timing
  • Science investigation: 24 marks across four criteria of six marks each
  • A dated draft sequence is evidence of authorship as well as progress
  • Abu Dhabi school reports arrive roughly twice a year, which is too slow to steer by
  • Review at six weeks on marked work, not on how the sessions felt
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Standard Level Biology sits inside the Diploma Programme, and what counts as evidence of progress changes depending on which IB route a student reached it by. The three programmes below are the ones that matter for an Abu Dhabi Biology family.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across two years, three of them at Standard Level for most candidates, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Standard Level Biology covers the same themes as Higher Level with less depth and a shorter Paper 2, and carries the identical scientific investigation at 20% of the subject grade. That identical weighting is why the investigation matters proportionally more to a Standard Level student: it is a fifth of the grade with no additional content layer to dilute it.

Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts are small, and a Standard Level Biology group of ten to fifteen is typical. Small groups mean a student sees very few examples of top-band answers written by peers, so the evidence trail has to supply what a larger cohort would supply socially. ADEK publishes inspection outcomes for the emirate's private schools, but an inspection band says nothing about one student's Paper 2 technique.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Criterion-referenced assessment across five years. MYP Sciences marks inquiring and designing, and processing and evaluating, as separate criteria, which is the closest preparation available for the Diploma investigation. A student arriving from MYP usually produces a stronger first research question and a weaker recall base than a student arriving from an IGCSE stream.

Several Abu Dhabi IB schools run MYP to the end of Year 11 rather than entering students for IGCSE. For an evidence trail that matters: an MYP-route student's early marked papers will show recall losses, and an IGCSE-route student's will show design and evaluation losses. Sorting the first month of marked work tells you which conversation to have.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A narrower IB route pairing a small number of DP courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. A CP student taking Standard Level Biology sits the same papers and submits the same investigation, but carries no Theory of Knowledge load, which changes what a realistic weekly hour looks like in the second year.

The Career-related Programme is uncommon in Abu Dhabi, and a CP Biology student is frequently the only one in their year on that course. There is no cohort to compare marked work against, so a tutor's written record becomes the only comparator the family has.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Standard Level Biology is the subject here, described below in terms of what evidence each part of it produces. The subjects after it are the ones Abu Dhabi students commonly carry alongside it, noted for what they contribute to, or take from, a Biology evidence trail.

Biology (Standard Level)

Standard Level, Group 4

Two written papers plus the scientific investigation at 20%. Paper 1 splits into multiple choice and a data-based section. Paper 2 is structured and extended response. Because there is no additional depth layer to absorb attention, the evidence here is unusually clean: losses sort into recall, command term, data handling and timing with very little ambiguity.

Biology (Higher Level)

Higher Level, Group 4

The same themes with an additional depth layer and a longer Paper 2. Students sometimes move down to Standard Level after DP1 mocks. The investigation work already done transfers intact, which means the draft sequence is preserved as evidence and only the content record needs rebuilding.

Chemistry

Standard Level and Higher Level

Shares enzyme kinetics, bonding and buffers with Biology. For an evidence trail, the useful point is that a student losing marks to the same quantitative weakness in both subjects has one problem, not two, and one tutor across both will spot that where two tutors separately will not.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Standard Level and Higher Level

Holds the statistics a Biology investigation needs: standard deviation, chi-squared, correlation, error bars. A student's Mathematics marked work is useful evidence for a Biology tutor, because it shows whether the statistics problem is knowledge or transfer.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Standard Level and Higher Level

Lighter on applied statistics, which produces a recognisable pattern in Biology evidence: fluent algebra, hesitant significance testing. A single statistics block taught against the student's own data usually closes it faster than general revision does.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Standard Level and Higher Level

Overlaps Biology's ecology strand. Where a student takes both, their marked work on ecosystems can be read across the two subjects, and a repeated loss in one usually appears in the other. That cross-reading is cheap evidence most families never use.

Psychology

Standard Level and Higher Level

Research methods are assessed explicitly, which transfers to the Biology investigation's evaluation criterion. A Psychology student's essays are a reasonable predictor of how well they will critique their own experimental method.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

Standard Level and Higher Level

Shares human physiology with Biology. It is not an accepted substitute for Biology on most life-science applications, so a family considering the swap should check the specific faculty requirement with the school's university counsellor before the timetable closes.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma candidates

Competes for the same weeks as the Biology investigation and the Extended Essay. An honest evidence review has to note the terms when a weekly science hour was not realistic, rather than reading a flat month as a failure of the plan.

Extended Essay

Core, 4,000 words

Separate from the investigation and supervised at school. Where the essay is in Biology, its drafts become part of the same evidence trail, and the authenticity record kept by the school supervisor applies to it in exactly the same way.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy Standard Level Biology support, described by the evidence each one produces rather than by how many hours it contains. All three run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Diagnostic block, then decide

Two or three sessions whose only purpose is to produce a baseline: marked work sorted by error type, a judgement on whether the problem is content or technique, and a written estimate of hours with reasons. Some families stop here, having learned that the issue is revision habits rather than teaching. That is a legitimate outcome and a cheap one.

  • Two or three sessions, no commitment beyond them
  • Output is a written baseline, not a general impression
  • Sorts losses into recall, command term, data handling and timing
  • Ends with an hours estimate that has a reason attached

Weekly hour with a fortnightly written review

The standard shape: one fixed hour a week, with a short note after each session and a fuller review every second week comparing marked work against the baseline. The review is the part that makes the plan steerable. Without it a family is buying hours and hoping, which is how six months disappears.

  • One fixed hour a week in a protected slot
  • A short written note after every session
  • A fuller fortnightly review against the original baseline
  • A keep, change or stop decision at six weeks

Investigation draft cycle

Feedback across the dated draft sequence: research question, method, first data set, first full report. Each round is read against the four published criteria and returned with specific, criterion-referenced comments on the student's own writing. The tutor teaches design and statistics and comments on drafts. The student writes the report.

  • Research question reviewed before any data is collected
  • Statistics taught against the student's own planned data
  • Each draft commented against research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation
  • Dated drafts retained, which supports the school's authenticity record

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What goes in the fortnightly note, and why it is short

A useful progress record for Standard Level Biology fits on half a page. Long reports do not get read, and the ones that do get read tend to be narrative rather than comparable. What a parent needs is a small number of fields that look the same every fortnight, so that the fourth one can be held against the first.

Five fields carry almost all the information. What was taught, in syllabus language rather than in general terms. What marked work was reviewed, with the actual mark and the paper it came from. Which error type each lost mark was assigned to. Which named gaps from the baseline are now closed. What the student is doing before the next session, with a time estimate attached.

Two further fields matter in the investigation term: which draft stage the report has reached, and which of the four criteria the last round of feedback was about. Those two make the difference between a parent knowing the investigation is progressing and a parent discovering in March that the research question was never viable.

The reason this is worth insisting on is that it is falsifiable. A plan with a record can be shown not to be working. A plan without one cannot, and in a market where nobody publishes availability or method, a falsifiable claim is worth more than a reassuring one. Ask any Abu Dhabi tutor you speak to for an example of the record they keep, with the student's details removed.

Sorting a marked Biology paper into four error types

A returned Paper 2 with 24 out of 40 on it is not information yet. The same mark can represent four completely different students, and the hours needed to move each of them are not comparable. Sorting the lost marks is the single highest-value thing a first session can do, and it takes about twenty minutes on a paper the student has already sat.

A recall loss looks like a blank or a wrong term. The student did not know that glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm. These are slow to fix because there is no shortcut to content, but they are honest: you can count them and watch the count fall. A command-term loss looks completely different and is the one families miss. The answer is long, accurate and fluent, and it scores two out of five because the question said evaluate and the student described. Nothing about the student's knowledge is wrong.

A data-handling loss lives in the data-based section of Paper 1 and in the structured questions that supply a graph. The signatures are specific: describing a trend the question asked to be quantified, ignoring error bars, dropping units, or reading a logarithmic axis as linear. A timing loss is the easiest of all to identify, because the losses cluster on the last page and the handwriting deteriorates.

The point of sorting is the hours estimate. Command-term repair is often four to six sessions of drilling against real mark schemes, and the gain shows up fast across every topic at once. Recall gaps across three themes are a term's work. Telling a parent which of those they are buying before they commit is what an evidence-led plan means in practice.

03

The investigation draft trail, question to final report

The scientific investigation is 20% of the Standard Level Biology grade and 24 marks across four criteria. It is also the only part of the course that produces dated evidence on its own, which makes it the backbone of any progress record. The sequence is predictable and each stage answers a different question for a parent.

The research question comes first and carries the most risk. Six marks sit in research design, and the other eighteen depend on whether the question can be controlled at all. A question like whether temperature affects enzyme activity is answerable; a question about whether pollution affects local marine life is not, in a school laboratory, within a term. Most mid-band reports were decided here, weeks before any data existed.

The method follows, and it is where the statistics decision actually gets made even though students think it comes later. How many repeats, at how many levels of the independent variable, with what measured how precisely, determines whether a significance test is available at the end. A tutor teaching statistics after data collection is teaching a post-mortem.

Then the first data set, then the first full report. At each of those two stages the feedback is criterion-referenced and it comments on the student's writing rather than replacing it. The dated drafts serve a second purpose beyond progress: they are a record of whose work the report is, which matters because the school supervisor's authenticity judgement is part of the assessment and the IB treats a breach as malpractice by the student.

04

What Standard Level leaves out, and what that does to the evidence

  • Same themes as Higher Level, less depth, a shorter Paper 2
  • The investigation is 20% at both levels, so it weighs more proportionally here
  • Content catch-up inside one term is realistic at Standard Level
  • Level-change conversations belong with the school, with marked work attached

Standard Level Biology is not a shorter version of Higher Level in the sense of covering fewer themes. It covers the same themes with less depth and sits a shorter Paper 2. That distinction changes what the evidence looks like and it changes what a plan should prioritise.

Because there is no additional depth layer, the Standard Level content load is finishable. A student who is genuinely behind on content can be caught up inside a term, which is not reliably true at Higher Level. So a baseline that shows mostly recall losses is better news for a Standard Level student than the same baseline would be for a Higher Level one.

At the same time, the investigation is worth the identical 20%, and the papers carry the remaining 80% between a shorter Paper 2 and a Paper 1 of similar character. Proportionally, the investigation is the largest single thing a Standard Level student can move, and it is movable by work the student does rather than by content they have to absorb. An evidence-led plan for Standard Level therefore weights the draft cycle more heavily than a Higher Level plan would.

There is one decision that an evidence review often surfaces and that no tutor should make for a family: whether the student should be at Standard Level at all. A student banding consistently at 6 and intending to apply for a life-science degree may be under-placed. A student at Higher Level banding at 3 and intending to read engineering is almost certainly over-placed. Both conversations belong with the school's Diploma coordinator and university counsellor, with the marked work as the evidence.

05

What grade movement is realistic, and over what period

Nobody can promise a grade and any provider who does is telling you something about themselves rather than about your child. What can be described honestly is the shape of movement that evidence usually shows, and the periods over which it shows up. That is useful to a family deciding whether to continue.

Command-term repair produces the fastest visible change, because the student already knows the content and is simply answering a different question from the one asked. A run of four to six sessions against real mark schemes typically shows up in the next marked paper across several topics at once. Families often read that as a sudden improvement in knowledge. It is not; it is the same knowledge finally scoring.

Content repair is slower and more linear. Gaps across three themes take a term and the evidence of it is the named-gap list shortening rather than the grade jumping. A parent watching only the grade through that period will conclude nothing is happening, which is precisely why the named-gap list exists.

Investigation marks move in steps rather than curves, because feedback lands at discrete draft stages. The band usually moves once after the method is fixed and once after the evaluation is rewritten by the student, and then stops, because the report is submitted. Timing losses are the cheapest of all to fix and the gain is immediate. Hold all of this against the honest caveat: a student who does nothing between sessions will show none of these patterns, and the evidence will say so clearly.

WHAT MOVES, HOW FAST, AND HOW IT SHOWS UP IN THE RECORD
What is being repairedPeriod before it is visibleWhat the evidence looks like while it worksHonest limit

06

Mock results are data, not a verdict

  • The pattern of losses inside a mock matters more than the letter on it
  • Sort every lost mark into one of the four error types before revising anything
  • Compare the sorted result with the first diagnostic, not with a target
  • Predicted grades are the school's judgement, not a tutor's

Abu Dhabi schools run mock examinations in the DP2 window and the result lands in a family's inbox with a lot of emotional weight attached. Treated as a verdict it is actively misleading. Treated as the largest single piece of evidence in the two years, it is extremely useful.

Mocks are set, marked and standardised by the school. The paper may be a past paper, a composite, or something written in-house, and the grade boundaries applied are the school's judgement. That makes the letter on the front less reliable than the pattern inside, and the pattern inside is the part almost nobody reads. A 4 built from even losses across every question means something quite different from a 4 built from a strong first half and a blank last page.

The useful exercise after a mock is not revision. It is sorting: every lost mark assigned to one of the four error types, counted, and compared with the baseline from the first diagnostic. That comparison answers the question a family actually has, which is whether the last two terms of paid hours changed anything. It usually takes one session and it determines what the remaining weeks should contain.

One further caution specific to this market. A mock grade is not a prediction and a predicted grade is a separate judgement made by the school for university applications. Neither is something a tutor issues, influences or should be asked to produce. A tutor's contribution is the error analysis and the plan that follows from it.

07

Academic honesty, and why the paper trail protects the student

  • Dated drafts in the student's own words evidence authorship as well as progress
  • A tutor teaches design and statistics, and comments on work already written
  • The school supervisor keeps the authenticity record for assessed work
  • Official syllabus and paper material should be linked, not copied or supplied

An evidence trail has a second function that families rarely consider when they ask for one. Dated drafts in the student's own words are the clearest demonstration available that the work is theirs. In a market where some providers openly sell finished reports, that record is worth having on file.

The boundary for a tutor is specific and it is worth asking any Abu Dhabi provider to state it in writing before you engage them. A tutor may teach research design. A tutor may teach the statistics. A tutor may explain precisely what each of the four criteria rewards and what the difference between a middle and a top band looks like. A tutor may read a draft the student has written and comment on it, criterion by criterion. A tutor may not supply text, supply data, or revise a draft into a submittable state.

The same applies to the Extended Essay and to Theory of Knowledge. The school supervisor keeps an authenticity record and signs off that the submitted work is the candidate's own. The IB treats a breach as malpractice by the student, with consequences that fall on the student and not on the provider who caused it. That asymmetry is the whole reason to insist on the boundary rather than take it on trust.

A related caution on materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB and to the examination boards. A tutor should reference them and point you to the official source rather than hand over copies. If a provider offers a library of downloadable mark schemes, you are looking at a copyright problem rather than a resource advantage.

08

What to do when six weeks of evidence shows nothing moved

  • Re-diagnose before buying more hours of the same plan
  • Named gaps closing while marks stay flat means the baseline was wrong
  • Work set and not done, repeatedly, is not a tutoring problem
  • Changing tutor is normal, and the baseline transfers to the new one

This happens, and the right response is not to buy more hours of the same thing. A record exists precisely so that this conversation can be had on facts rather than feelings, and there are only a small number of real explanations.

The first is that the diagnosis was wrong. A plan built around content gaps will not move a student whose losses were command-term errors, and six weeks of thorough content teaching will produce a thorough, unchanged mark. The fix is a re-diagnosis, which costs one session. Check the baseline list: if the named gaps are being ticked off but the marks are flat, the baseline was looking at the wrong thing.

The second is that nothing is happening between sessions. One hour a week against a course with two papers and an investigation is not sufficient on its own, and the record will show it: work set, work not done, repeatedly. That is not a tutoring problem and more tutoring will not solve it. It is worth saying plainly rather than quietly selling another term.

The third is the match. A tutor can be a competent biologist and a poor fit for a particular student, and six weeks is long enough to know. Changing tutor is a normal outcome and the baseline transfers, so the new tutor starts with a diagnosis rather than from nothing. The fourth possibility is the honest one nobody likes: the student is already performing close to their current ceiling for this term, and the useful intervention is time and the next term rather than more hours now. A provider willing to say that is more use than one who is not.

09

Where the tutor pool sits in this emirate, and what is disclosed

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free for two years under Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • ADEK ethics rules bar paid tutoring of a teacher's own enrolled students
  • No fine schedule is published, so any quoted penalty figure is unverified
  • If a matched tutor is not UAE-resident, that is stated before the first lesson

Standard Level Biology is one of the more widely taught Diploma subjects, so matching is usually easier than for a narrow Higher Level specialism. Availability in Abu Dhabi is still shaped by two constraints no competitor page in this cluster mentions, and both affect what a family can realistically book.

The first is legal. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years to a defined list of applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents and university students. Tutoring without it carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you.

The second is the ADEK ethics position, reported by Gulf News, under which private and charter school staff are barred from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy before relying on it. The practical effect is to remove the most convenient option from the table and to shrink the lawful local pool.

Where no UAE-resident Standard Level Biology specialist is free for the slot a family wants, the options are stated rather than concealed: a different time, a different tutor profile, a wait with a date on it, or a tutor based outside the UAE teaching on Gulf Standard Time. Several providers ranking for UAE searches route parents to numbers outside the country without disclosing where delivery happens, and the first time a family learns that is usually the worst possible moment.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Where a family lives in Abu Dhabi changes the practical shape of an evidence routine: when a session can run, when drafts can realistically be read, and how quickly a marked paper can be photographed and sent. The notes below are about that, not about scenery.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Central island districts with short school runs to several long-established schools. A 16:30 session works here, which means marked work from that day's lesson can be reviewed the same evening.

Corniche and Al Markaziyah

Apartment living close to the island schools. Families here often run two children in different year groups, so the fortnightly written note matters more: it is the only way to keep two sets of evidence apart.

Al Nahyan and Al Wahda

Dense central neighbourhoods with a mixed curriculum intake. Diploma students here frequently transfer in mid-course, which makes the first diagnostic session unusually valuable as a baseline.

Al Zahiyah

Older island district with apartment housing and short commutes. Evening sessions from 17:00 hold reliably, so a weekly cadence is easy to protect through the DP2 mock period.

Masdar City

Small, planned community with a long run to most schools. Online delivery removes a journey that would otherwise consume the hour either side of any session, which is what makes a stable weekly slot possible at all.

Al Reef and Hydra Village

Mainland villa communities near the airport road. The specialist Biology pool within a short drive is thin; the pool on screen is not, and the written record is how a remote tutor stays accountable.

Baniyas and Al Shawamekh

Established mainland districts with a wide spread of curricula and longer commutes. Families here are the clearest case for a documented plan, because nobody is going to drop in to check informally.

Al Jubail Island and Al Bandar

Newer waterfront communities with small Diploma numbers in each year group. With no cohort to benchmark against, a tutor's error log is the only comparison a parent has.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Central island schools

Long-established Diploma provision with internal investigation deadlines that usually sit well ahead of the IB's upload window. The evidence point: when you ask a school for the deadline, ask for the draft milestones too. Those are the dates a tutor's feedback has to land before.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi

Mainland and airport-road schools

A broader curriculum mix and several schools running IGCSE to Year 11 before Diploma entry. Students from this cluster tend to produce first investigation drafts that are strong on method and thin on evaluation, which is exactly what a draft-by-draft record exposes.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one marked paper and one investigation draft

Two documents establish a baseline faster than any conversation. A marked Paper 2 question shows the error profile; a current investigation draft shows where the 20% stands. If neither exists yet, say so, and the first session generates its own baseline instead.

  2. 02

    Take the free diagnostic session

One full session online at no charge. It should end with a written list: named gaps by theme, lost marks sorted into the four error types, a view on whether the research question is viable, and an hours estimate with reasons. Keep that document; everything later is measured against it.

Fix the slot and the reporting cadence

Agree the weekly time in Gulf Standard Time around the school run and prayer times, and agree what arrives afterwards: a short note per session and a fuller review every second week. Settle the format before the first paid hour rather than asking for it in month three.

  4. 04

Review at six weeks on evidence

Put the fourth fortnightly review next to the baseline. Which named gaps closed, which error type the losses moved to, which investigation criterion band shifted. Then keep the plan, change the mode, change the tutor, or stop. All four are reasonable conclusions from evidence.

  5. 05

    Re-baseline after mocks

The mock paper is the biggest single evidence event of the two years. Sort every lost mark into an error type, compare with the original baseline, and rebuild the remaining weeks around what the comparison shows rather than around a revision timetable written in advance.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Every session leaves a written record

A short note after each session and a fuller review every second week, in the same fields each time so that the fourth can be compared with the first. The format is agreed before the first paid hour, not requested later when a family starts to worry.

Marks are sorted, not just counted

A 24 out of 40 can mean four different students. Lost marks are assigned to recall, command term, data handling or timing, because the hours needed to repair each are not comparable and a plan built on the wrong one produces thorough, unchanged results.

The investigation is handled as a draft sequence

Research question, method, first data set, first full report, each reviewed against the four published criteria. Feedback comments on the student's own writing. The dated drafts also stand as evidence of authorship, which matters to the school's authenticity record.

Stopping is a permitted outcome

If six weeks of evidence shows nothing moved, the options include re-diagnosis, a different tutor, and stopping. A diagnostic block exists precisely so some families can establish that the issue is revision habits rather than teaching and spend nothing further.

No grade promises, and no invented numbers

No provider can promise a grade or a points total. Nothing on this page carries a statistic without its source, no rating is self-asserted, and the only figures quoted are market rate bands attributed to the providers and rate tables that published them.

Delivered online, stated plainly

All Abu Dhabi lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, including through Ramadan when slots move after Iftar. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, holds no regulator or board accreditation, and occupies no UAE premises.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What evidence should we have after a month of Standard Level Biology sessions?+

Four short session notes and two fuller fortnightly reviews, in the same fields each time. Between them they should name the content taught in syllabus wording, list the marked work reviewed with actual marks, assign each lost mark to recall, command term, data handling or timing, and tick off named gaps from the first diagnostic. In the investigation term they should also state which draft stage the report has reached. If what you have instead is four friendly messages saying the session went well, you have no evidence and no way to steer.

How do you tell a knowledge gap from a command-term problem on a marked paper?+

They look nothing alike once you know what to check. A knowledge gap shows as a blank space or a confidently wrong term. A command-term problem shows as a long, accurate, fluent answer that scores two out of five, because the question asked the student to evaluate and they described. The second is the one families miss, since the writing reads well. It is also the faster of the two to repair: four to six sessions drilled against real mark schemes usually lifts marks across several topics at once.

How much marked Biology work should exist before we judge whether the sessions are working?+

Enough to see a pattern rather than a mood, which in practice means at least three or four pieces of assessed work across six weeks, from more than one topic. One marked paper tells you about one day. Three tell you whether the losses are concentrating in the same error type. If the school is not producing enough assessed work in that period, a tutor should be setting timed questions and marking them against the official criteria so that the record exists at all.

Which Standard Level Biology topics come up most often in a first diagnostic?+

The patterns are consistent across Abu Dhabi cohorts. Cellular respiration and photosynthesis produce recall losses because the detail is sequential and partial knowledge scores poorly. Membrane transport produces quiet gaps that surface across several unrelated questions. Genetics and inheritance produce data-handling losses rather than recall ones. Ecology tends to be well recalled and badly applied. A first diagnostic is not looking for weak topics in general, though; it is looking for which of the four error types each loss belongs to.

Does the tutor give my daughter's investigation draft a mark?+

No, and you should be cautious of one who does. The mark belongs to the school, which assesses the report against the four published criteria and keeps the authenticity record. What a tutor provides is criterion-referenced feedback on the draft the student has written: which band the research design currently sits in and what specifically is missing, whether the analysis fits the data, whether the conclusion is justified rather than restated, and whether the evaluation names this method's weaknesses rather than generic ones. The student then revises in their own words.

How long before a grade actually moves in Standard Level Biology?+

It depends entirely on what is being repaired, which is why the diagnosis matters more than the hours. Command-term technique typically shows in the next marked paper after four to six sessions. Timing losses go almost immediately once full papers are sat under real conditions. Content gaps across two or three themes take a term, and through most of that term the grade will look flat while the named-gap list shortens, which is the evidence that it is working. Nobody can promise a grade, and a provider quoting one should be questioned.

Our Abu Dhabi school reports twice a year. Is that enough to track Biology?+

No. Two reports across two years means a problem can run for a full term before anyone outside the classroom sees it, and in Standard Level Biology a term is long enough to slide a band. School reports are also written for a different purpose: they summarise attainment and effort rather than diagnosing which of four error types is costing the marks. Use them as one input and run a fortnightly record alongside, built from marked work the student is already producing rather than from anything extra.

What does a tutor's record contain that a school report does not?+

Three things. First, error-type attribution: a school report says the grade, not whether the marks went to command-term misreading or to genuine recall gaps. Second, a named-gap list that gets ticked off, so the original diagnosis can be checked rather than remembered. Third, the investigation draft stage, which a school report mentions only after submission. None of that is a criticism of schools; the report is simply not built to steer a weekly plan and should not be asked to.

Can we see the tutor's written comments on the investigation drafts?+

Yes, and you should ask for them as a matter of course. Criterion-referenced feedback on a student's own draft is exactly the kind of work a parent is entitled to read, and seeing it tells you whether the comments are specific enough to act on. Comments that name the criterion, the band and the missing element are useful. Comments that say expand this are not. Keeping the dated drafts and the feedback together also supports the school's record of whose work the report is.

Is a mock grade of 4 in Standard Level Biology a reliable signal?+

The letter is less reliable than the pattern behind it. Mocks are set, marked and boundaried by the school, sometimes from a past paper and sometimes from an in-house composite, so the grade is a judgement rather than a measurement. What is reliable is the distribution of lost marks. A 4 made of even losses across every question is a content problem. A 4 with a strong first half and a blank final page is a timing problem, and those need completely different remaining weeks.

Does the written reporting cost extra on top of the hourly rate?+

It should not, and if a provider prices the record separately that tells you it is not part of how they work. The note and the fortnightly review are built from the session itself and from marked work the student already has, so they take the tutor minutes rather than hours. For context on the hourly rate itself, market bands for IB specialist tutoring in the UAE run roughly AED 200 to AED 450 according to Bestimate's 2026 rate table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Unitors listing IB tuition from AED 200.

Do lessons happen at our apartment on Al Reem Island?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India. Every Abu Dhabi session is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For an evidence-led plan that is an advantage rather than a compromise: screen sharing puts the marked paper, the mark scheme and the annotated graph in front of both people at once, and the annotated version is saved at the end of the session instead of going home in a folder nobody opens again.

Is it a problem if the tutor also teaches at my daughter's Abu Dhabi school?+

Yes, and it is worth checking before you book. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff are prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that bars the same arrangement. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document. Ask any provider directly whether the matched tutor teaches at your child's school, and expect a straight answer.

What should happen if six weeks of evidence shows nothing has changed?+

Re-diagnose rather than buy more of the same. There are four usual explanations and the record distinguishes them. The diagnosis was wrong, which shows as named gaps closing while marks stay flat. Nothing is happening between sessions, which shows as work set and not done repeatedly. The tutor is a poor fit for this student, which six weeks is long enough to establish. Or the student is near their ceiling for this term and time is the intervention. Stopping is a legitimate conclusion from evidence.

Which degree routes close if my child stays at Standard Level Biology?+

Medicine and most competitive life-science programmes expect Biology at Higher Level, and for those routes Standard Level is usually insufficient on its own regardless of the grade. Several health-science, nursing and allied programmes accept Standard Level, and requirements vary by country and by faculty rather than following a single rule. This is a question for the school's university counsellor with the actual entry requirements in front of you, not for a tutor. Tutoring is not a requirement for admission or for progression anywhere.

Start with a baseline you can measure against

Standard Level Biology is two papers and a 24-mark investigation, and the difference between a plan that works and one that quietly does not is whether anybody wrote down what was wrong at the start. Send one marked Paper 2 question and the current investigation draft, take the free diagnostic session online, and keep the written list it produces. Six weeks later that list is what tells you whether to continue, change the mode, change the tutor or stop. All four are reasonable, and none of them is a judgement you can make from how the sessions felt.
