IB DP Biology HL Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Biology HL tutor in Abu Dhabi sits in a market band of roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour, and this page sets out every variable that moves that figure: the level, the term you start in, the paper you are repairing, the investigation deadline and how thin the specialist pool is in this emirate. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so a Khalifa City student opens the laptop at 17:30 with no drive attached. The first session is a free trial.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What an Abu Dhabi family actually pays for Higher Level Biology

Price is the question most Abu Dhabi parents ask first and the one the ranking pages for this search refuse to answer. Of the agency and platform pages measured for this subject in October 2026, three published no figure at all, and the two that did quoted US dollars, a currency no family in this emirate transacts in. So the number goes first here. Qualified subject tutoring online in the UAE runs roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour. IB and A-Level specialists run AED 200 to AED 450 and above, a band Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table and TutorChase's own published AED 270 both sit inside. An in-home visit, once travel is priced in, runs AED 180 to AED 500. Premium examiner-badged providers reach AED 650, which BartyED publishes openly.

Higher Level Biology sits at the upper end of those bands for reasons that have nothing to do with marketing. The subject is examined over two papers rather than one, the Higher Level additional content adds a full extra layer of molecular and physiological detail, and the scientific investigation has to be supervised across months rather than coached in a fortnight. A tutor who can do all three is a biologist who also knows the current subject guide. There are not many of them resident in Abu Dhabi, and scarcity is a price input.

The second thing that moves an Abu Dhabi invoice is the calendar. A DP1 family starting in October is buying content teaching at a steady weekly hour. A DP2 family starting in February is buying triage before the May session, which means shorter lead times, evening and weekend slots, and often two hours a week rather than one. The same tutor, the same subject, roughly double the monthly outlay. Families who book the same total hours twelve months earlier pay less per outcome, not because the rate drops but because fewer hours are needed.

The third variable is what you are actually buying. An hour of content teaching, an hour of marked-paper feedback and an hour of investigation supervision are three different products priced at the same headline rate but consumed at different intensities. Investigation supervision is front-loaded: research design eats three or four hours, then the student goes away and collects data for weeks. Paper repair is the opposite, a long run of short, regular sessions. Knowing which one your child needs is the single biggest saving available, and the trial lesson exists to establish it.

The fourth variable is local and specific to this emirate. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff, as reported by Gulf News, bar a teacher from taking paid private work with students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that says the same. That closes off the cheapest option many parents reach for first, which is paying the class teacher for evening help. It also means the legitimate Abu Dhabi pool is smaller than the number of Biology teachers in the emirate suggests, and the rate reflects that. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are a service we run only in India, and every Abu Dhabi lesson runs online over live video.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

This page is about the Diploma Programme, and specifically about Higher Level Biology inside it. The two programmes below it matter because they decide how much repair work a DP1 Biology student arrives needing, and what a Higher Level hour has to cover in the first term.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Biology sits in Group 4. At Higher Level it carries additional content on top of the shared core, is examined over two written papers, and contributes a scientific investigation worth 20% of the subject grade. Higher Level Biology is the standard entry requirement quoted by medical and life-science faculties, which is why so many Abu Dhabi students take it whether or not it suits them.

Abu Dhabi private schools are inspected by ADEK, which publishes its own ratings for the emirate. Enrolment is spread across the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, and the newer mainland communities, and the Diploma cohort in each school is usually small. A Higher Level Biology class of eight is normal here, which is good for attention and bad for the range of marked work a student sees before mocks.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Five years of interdisciplinary study assessed against criteria rather than content lists. MYP Sciences is assessed on knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Those four criteria map almost directly onto the Diploma investigation, which is why a strong MYP science student usually finds the Higher Level Biology investigation easier than a strong IGCSE student does.

Several Abu Dhabi IB schools run MYP through Year 11 rather than entering an IGCSE cohort. Students who come through that route arrive in DP1 fluent in criterion language and light on recall. Students arriving from an IGCSE stream arrive with the opposite profile. The first three Higher Level Biology sessions in an Abu Dhabi DP1 usually go to whichever of those two gaps the student actually has.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining DP courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. A CP student can take Biology as one of their DP courses, which means Higher Level Biology occasionally appears outside a full Diploma cohort. The subject content and the investigation requirement are identical; what changes is that the student has no Theory of Knowledge load competing for the same term.

The Career-related Programme is rare in Abu Dhabi and a CP Biology student is often the only one in their year taking the course at that level. That is exactly the case where school timetabling cannot provide a specialist and an online one-to-one hour is the only realistic route to the subject guide's depth.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Biology is the subject in the URL, so it is broken out first in the detail a parent needs to brief a tutor. The subjects after it are the ones Abu Dhabi Diploma students most often pair with it, with a note on what each pairing does to a weekly hour budget.

Biology (Higher Level)

Higher Level, Group 4

Examined over two papers. Paper 1 is split between multiple choice and a data-based section; Paper 2 is extended response and structured questions. Higher Level adds depth across every theme rather than appending a separate unit. Marks are lost on command terms, not knowledge: students who can describe a process cannot always explain or evaluate it.

Biology (Standard Level)

Standard Level, Group 4

Same themes, less depth, shorter Paper 2, and the same 20% investigation. Abu Dhabi students sometimes move down from Higher Level after DP1 mocks. The move is cheaper than it looks in tutoring terms, because the investigation work already done carries over intact and only the content layer needs reshaping.

Chemistry

Higher Level and Standard Level

The usual Higher Level pairing for a medical or life-science application. Biology and Chemistry share enzyme kinetics, buffers and bonding, so one tutor who holds both can cut the total weekly hours. Abu Dhabi families who book them separately often pay for the same explanation twice.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Higher Level and Standard Level

Carries the statistics a Biology investigation needs: chi-squared, standard deviation, correlation and error bars. A Biology student taking Applications has the tools and often does not connect them to the investigation. One joint session usually fixes the transfer.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Higher Level and Standard Level

Lighter on applied statistics than Applications, which catches Biology students out when the investigation needs a significance test. A short statistics block, taught once and properly, tends to earn more investigation marks per hour than any amount of extra content revision.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares physiology with Biology and is sometimes taken instead of it. It is not a substitute for Higher Level Biology on a medical application, and an Abu Dhabi family should check the specific faculty requirement before switching. The overlap does make a joint tutor sensible where both are taken.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Higher Level and Standard Level

Overlaps the ecology and ecosystems strand of Biology. Students taking both repeat content, which is an argument for a single tutor across the pair. Students taking it instead of Biology should know how differently universities treat the two for life-science entry.

Psychology

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares the biological approach to behaviour, including neurotransmission and hormones. Psychology demands a research-methods literacy that transfers straight into the Biology investigation's evaluation criterion. Abu Dhabi students who take both often need less investigation support than their classmates.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma candidates

Not a science subject, but it competes for the same DP2 term as the Biology investigation and the Extended Essay. Any honest costing of Higher Level Biology support has to include the weeks when the essay and the exhibition make a weekly science hour unaffordable in time rather than money.

Extended Essay in Biology

Core, 4,000 words

A separate piece of work from the investigation, with its own supervisor at school. A tutor can teach the research methods, question framing and reading needed for it, and give feedback on the student's own drafts. The words must be the student's own, and the supervisor's record of authenticity is part of the assessment.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Abu Dhabi families buy Higher Level Biology support, with what each costs in time rather than only in AED. All three run online over live video, one tutor to one student, on Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly content hour

One fixed hour a week through DP1 and into DP2, tracking the school's scheme of work a fortnight ahead rather than behind. This is the cheapest version of Higher Level Biology support per mark earned, because it prevents the backlog instead of clearing it. Abu Dhabi families who start this in the first term of DP1 typically never need the intensive block later.

  • One hour weekly, same slot, 16:30 to 20:00 Gulf Standard Time
  • Teaches a fortnight ahead of the school's scheme of work
  • Includes a short written note to the parent after each session
  • Cheapest route per mark because it avoids remedial hours

Investigation supervision block

A front-loaded set of sessions around the scientific investigation: choosing a researchable question, designing the method, deciding what the controlled variables actually are, and selecting the statistics before any data is collected. The tutor teaches the design and gives feedback on the student's own drafts. The report is written by the student.

  • Three to four hours on research design before data collection starts
  • Statistics chosen to match the data, not the other way round
  • Feedback against the four published criteria, criterion by criterion
  • Plans backwards from the school's internal deadline, not the IB's

Pre-examination repair block

Short, frequent sessions in the final term, built entirely around marked papers. Each session takes a question the student lost marks on, diagnoses whether the loss was knowledge, command term or time, and fixes that specific failure. This is the most expensive mode per hour of outcome because the lead time is gone, which is the honest argument for starting earlier.

  • Two sessions a week in the final eight to ten weeks
  • Every session opens with a marked question, not a topic
  • Separate tracking of knowledge losses and command-term losses
  • Timed practice under real paper conditions in the last month

01

What an hour of Higher Level Biology costs in Abu Dhabi

An IB specialist hour in the UAE market runs roughly AED 200 to AED 450, and Higher Level Biology sits in the upper half of that band. The table below is the market, not a price list for this platform. Every range in it is attributed, because a rate without a source is a number somebody made up.

The ranges come from three places. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 for its entry tier, Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52; those are university-student and group-format rates, not Higher Level science specialists, and treating them as comparable is the commonest pricing mistake a parent makes. TutorChase publishes AED 270. BartyED publishes AED 650 for its examiner tier.

Monthly packages circulating in this market run around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour are AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. Read those alongside the exam-year reality: a DP2 Biology student in the final term is usually buying two hours a week, not one.

One number to hold against all of this: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year. Abu Dhabi fees are set under ADEK's own process. Tutoring is the part of an education budget that has no fee freeze attached to it, which is an argument for buying fewer hours earlier rather than more hours late.

02

The five things that move the number on an Abu Dhabi invoice

  • Level: Higher Level needs more sessions, not a higher rate
  • Timing: DP1 autumn is content teaching, DP2 spring is triage at double the weekly hours
  • Purpose: investigation supervision is front-loaded, paper repair is long and thin
  • Scarcity: current-guide Higher Level Biology plus statistics is a narrow brief
  • Legality: ADEK ethics rules and the MoHRE permit shrink the lawful local pool

Two families in the same Khalifa City compound can pay very different monthly totals for Higher Level Biology without either being overcharged. The rate per hour is the least interesting part of the calculation. What changes the total is how many hours, bought when, for what purpose.

Level is the first input. Higher Level Biology is examined over two papers and carries the additional depth layer, so the content volume a tutor has to cover is materially larger than at Standard Level. A tutor planning a Higher Level year is planning more sessions, not more expensive ones.

Timing is the second, and it is the one families control. Support bought in the first term of DP1 is content teaching at a steady weekly hour. Support bought in the February of DP2 is triage: shorter notice, scarcer slots, and two hours a week where one would have done eighteen months earlier. Scarcity of slots in the final term is a genuine market condition in this emirate, not a sales device.

Purpose is the third. Content teaching, marked-paper feedback and investigation supervision consume hours at very different rates. Investigation supervision is concentrated and then stops. Paper repair is thin and long. A family that buys the wrong one spends more for less movement.

Scarcity of the specialist is the fourth. Higher Level Biology with the current subject guide, plus comfort with chi-squared and error bars, plus experience of what an examiner does with a vague evaluation paragraph, is a narrow brief. The fifth input is legal: the ADEK ethics position and the MoHRE permit regime together shrink the Abu Dhabi pool to tutors who can lawfully take the work, and a smaller lawful pool prices higher than an informal one.

03

How Higher Level Biology is actually examined, component by component

Parents price tutoring without knowing what the grade is made of, which is how a family ends up paying for content revision when the marks are leaking out of data analysis. The components are public and the weightings are in the subject guide your child's coordinator holds.

The written papers carry 80% of the subject grade between them, and the scientific investigation carries the remaining 20%. Paper 1 divides into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section; the data-based half is where strong recall stops helping and graph reading, error analysis and unit discipline start deciding the mark. Paper 2 is structured and extended response, and it is where command terms decide everything: a student who describes when the question says evaluate has written a correct answer that scores nothing.

The Higher Level additional content is woven through the themes rather than bolted on at the end, which matters for how a tutoring plan is sequenced. A tutor cannot teach the Standard Level version and then add a Higher Level module in the final term. The depth has to be built in from the first pass, which is the clearest technical argument for starting in DP1 rather than DP2.

Confirm every weighting against the subject guide for your child's examination session before you plan around it. The IB revises assessment models, and the version a school taught two years ago may not be the version your child sits. Your child's Diploma coordinator holds the current document.

04

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

The investigation is 20% of the Biology grade and 24 marks, split evenly across four criteria. It is the single largest block of marks a Diploma Biology student can influence directly, and it is the part of the course where Abu Dhabi students most often lose marks for reasons that have nothing to do with how much Biology they know.

Research design carries six marks and decides the other eighteen. A question that cannot be controlled produces data that cannot be analysed, which produces a conclusion that cannot be justified and an evaluation that has nothing specific to evaluate. Most first drafts that score in the middle band do so because the question was chosen in a hurry, usually after the school's topic-approval deadline had already passed.

Data analysis carries six marks and is where statistics choice shows. A student who ran a chi-squared test on continuous data has lost marks that no amount of rewriting recovers. Conclusion carries six and asks for a judgement that the data actually supports, compared against accepted scientific understanding with a real citation. Evaluation carries the final six and is the most commonly thin section: students list generic limitations rather than the specific weaknesses their own method produced.

What a tutor does here is bounded and worth stating plainly. A tutor teaches research design, teaches the statistics, explains what each criterion rewards, and gives feedback on work the student has already produced. A tutor does not supply text, does not supply data, and does not edit a draft into a submission. The student's own words and the supervisor's authenticity record are part of the assessment, and a breach is an IB malpractice matter for the student, not an inconvenience.

ADEK, the MoHRE permit, and the teacher you cannot hire

  • ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain
  • ADEK ethics rules bar paid tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit comes from Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • The permit is free of charge for two years; no fine schedule is published anywhere
  • Ask any tutor directly whether they hold a current permit

Abu Dhabi and Al Ain private schools are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK publishes its own inspection outcomes, sets its own fee-increase process, and issues professional-conduct rules for school staff. It is named by none of the competitor pages measured for this subject cluster, which is remarkable given it is the authority that governs every school an Abu Dhabi Diploma student attends.

Two rules matter when a family is choosing a Biology tutor here. The first, reported by Gulf News, is that ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it, but the direction is clear and it closes off the option many parents consider first.

The second is federal. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private tutoring without that permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anybody, including this page.

The practical consequence for a parent is a question you can ask in the first conversation: does this tutor hold a current MoHRE private tuition work permit, and is my child enrolled at the school where they teach? A provider who cannot answer either question is selling you a risk alongside the hour. The official application route is MoHRE's own Private Tutor Licensing service, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time.

Online against an in-home visit: the Abu Dhabi arithmetic

Families searching for a Biology tutor in this emirate usually start by looking for someone who can drive to the house. That is a reasonable instinct and it is worth costing honestly rather than dismissing. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE, so what follows is the comparison itself rather than a pitch.

An in-home hour in this market costs AED 180 to AED 500 once travel is priced in, against AED 200 to AED 450 for an online specialist hour. On rate alone the two overlap. The difference is not price, it is which tutors are reachable. A villa in Al Shamkha can be reached by whichever Biology tutors live within a tolerable drive of Al Shamkha at 17:30 on a weekday. On screen, the constraint disappears and the question becomes who has taught the current subject guide at Higher Level and knows what an examiner does with a thin evaluation paragraph.

The second difference is what happens to the hour itself. Travel time is paid for either in the rate or in the tutor's willingness to hold the slot, and a tutor crossing the mainland in afternoon traffic will not hold a 16:30 and a 17:30 on the same day. Online, a student can take a 30-minute diagnostic the evening before mocks, which is not a journey anybody would make.

The third is the material. A Biology session lives on graphs, data tables, mark schemes and annotated diagrams. Screen sharing puts those in front of both people at once and the annotated version is saved at the end. A sheet of paper on a dining table is not.

The honest limitation: a student who will not engage without someone physically present is a poor fit for online delivery, and no comparison table changes that. The free trial exists so a family finds that out before paying for anything.

Two Diploma years in Biology, counted backwards from the May session

Abu Dhabi schools sit the May session. Nobody in this search cluster publishes a calendar for it, which is odd, because the calendar is the thing that decides whether a family is buying content teaching or emergency triage. The milestones below are relative on purpose: IB session and results dates are not confirmed from the IB in this project, so your child's Diploma coordinator is the source for the actual dates.

The important feature of a Biology timeline is that the investigation deadline and the mock examinations usually collide. A school's internal deadline for the investigation report sits months before the IB's own upload window, and the mock papers tend to fall in the same weeks. A family that has not planned for that collision ends up paying for two kinds of support at once in the most expensive term of the two years.

The second feature is that the research design decision has a hard expiry. Once data has been collected on a flawed method, those six research-design marks are substantially gone and so is a share of the eighteen downstream. A tutoring hour spent in DP1 on question framing is worth several hours spent in DP2 on rewriting.

The third is that content gaps compound in Biology more quietly than in Physics or Maths. A student can function for a term without really understanding membrane transport and then lose marks across four different Paper 2 questions. Diagnosis of those quiet gaps is the specific job of the first two or three sessions, which is why a trial lesson should produce a written list of them.

Equivalency, universities and whether Higher Level Biology is the right buy at all

  • Higher Level Biology is standard for medicine and life sciences, optional at that level for most other routes
  • British track: five IGCSE or GCSE subjects at E or grade 3 or better, excluding Arabic and Islamic education
  • Plus one Advanced Level at E or two Advanced Subsidiary Levels at E
  • No IB points figure for equivalency is published without a ministry source
  • Equivalency is completed with the authority, not by a tutoring platform

Some Abu Dhabi families are paying for Higher Level Biology support for a course their child does not need at that level. It is worth checking before committing to two years of weekly hours, and it is a question no competitor page in this cluster raises.

Higher Level Biology is the standard requirement for medicine and most life-science degrees, and for those routes the hours are necessary. For engineering, business, computing and most humanities routes it is not required at Higher Level, and a student struggling at Higher Level Biology while targeting an engineering place may be better served by moving to Standard Level and putting the recovered hours into Mathematics or Physics. That conversation belongs with the school's university counsellor, not with a tutor.

For UAE recognition of a school-leaving qualification, the Ministry of Education runs an equivalency process. The published British-track requirement is five accredited subjects at IGCSE or GCSE with a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One competitor ranking for UAE tutoring queries states that candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is wrong.

No IB points threshold for equivalency is published here, because none could be read on an official ministry source. Any page quoting an IB equivalency figure without a moe.gov.ae citation is guessing. Check the requirement on the ministry's own channel, and treat equivalency as a process the family completes with the authority rather than something a tutoring platform performs or accelerates. Tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency, admission or progression.

09

When no Higher Level Biology specialist is free

  • Evening slots in the DP2 spring term are the hardest to fill in this emirate
  • A 20:00 or weekend-morning slot widens the available pool substantially
  • A Chemistry specialist who also teaches Biology is a workable second choice
  • Where a tutor is not UAE-resident, that is stated before you commit

Availability is the thing no provider in this market discloses, and it is the thing that most often decides whether a family's plan works. Higher Level Biology with the current subject guide and real statistics fluency is a narrow specialism, and the Abu Dhabi-resident pool that can lawfully take the work is smaller still once the ADEK ethics position and the MoHRE permit regime are applied.

What that means in practice: for a standard weekday evening slot in DP1, a match is usually straightforward. For a 17:00 slot in the February of DP2, when every Diploma family in the emirate is looking for the same thing, it is not. The honest answer at that point is one of three things, and a provider who always says yes is not being straight with you.

The first option is a different slot. Moving a session to 20:00 or to a weekend morning widens the pool considerably, and in exam term that is usually the cheapest concession a family can make. The second is a different tutor profile: a Chemistry specialist who also teaches Higher Level Biology can handle content and marked papers competently even if investigation design is not their strongest ground. The third is waiting, with a date, rather than being matched to whoever is free.

Where no UAE-resident specialist is available, the tutor may be based elsewhere and teaching on Gulf Standard Time. That is disclosed before a match rather than concealed behind a local-looking contact number. Two providers ranking for UAE searches route parents to numbers outside the UAE without saying so, which is the kind of thing a family finds out at the worst possible moment.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi's Diploma cohort is not evenly spread, and where a family lives changes what time a session can realistically start and which school's internal deadlines a tutor has to work around. The notes below are about Biology specifically: class sizes, laboratory access and the practical consequence for a weekly hour.

Saadiyat Island

Dense cluster of IB and British-curriculum schools within a few minutes of each other. Strong laboratory provision, so investigation data collection is rarely the bottleneck. Sessions here commonly start at 16:30 because the school run is short.

Al Reem Island

Mixed residential towers with a growing Diploma population and a commute onto the island for most schools. A 16:30 start is optimistic; 17:30 works. Higher Level science classes at local schools are small, which limits peer marking.

Khalifa City

Villa communities feeding the Al Raha and Khalifa City school corridor. Afternoon traffic on the Abu Dhabi to Dubai artery means a 17:30 online start is reliable where an in-home visit at the same hour is not.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Short school runs and a high proportion of Diploma students taking two Higher Level sciences. The common request here is a single tutor covering Biology and Chemistry to keep the weekly hours down.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Older island neighbourhoods close to several long-established schools. Biology cohorts tend to be larger here, which means more marked work in circulation and more pressure on command-term precision.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer schools with newer laboratories and a young Diploma cohort. Investigation topics skew towards controlled plant and enzyme work because the equipment is there. Evening sessions fit around a short commute.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities with longer school runs and a wider spread of curricula. Families here are the clearest case for online delivery: the specialist pool within a 20-minute drive is thin, and the pool on screen is not.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Rapidly growing mainland districts where a Higher Level Biology student may be one of very few in their year. Online one-to-one is often the only route to a tutor who has taught the current subject guide rather than an older one.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat schools

The island schools run the longest-established Diploma cohorts in the emirate, and their internal investigation deadlines tend to fall earlier than the IB's own upload window. A tutor working with a student here plans backwards from the school's date, not the IB's.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas corridor

This corridor holds much of the emirate's newer IB provision. Higher Level science groups are small, so a student sees fewer worked examples of a top-band answer than a UK cohort would. That gap is what marked-paper feedback is for.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • Emirates National Schools

Mainland and Mussafah schools

A wider curriculum mix, including schools that run IGCSE to Year 11 before a Diploma entry. Students from this cluster arrive in DP1 Biology strong on recall and unpractised at the data-analysis half of Paper 1.

  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • GEMS Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi

Schools are named here as context for the Abu Dhabi Diploma landscape; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school, school group, regulator or examination board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the level, the school and the deadline

Three facts settle most of the plan: Higher Level or Standard Level, which Abu Dhabi school your child attends, and the school's internal deadline for the investigation report. The school matters because its internal dates, not the IB's, are what a tutor plans backwards from.

  2. 02

Send one piece of marked work

A marked Paper 2 question or a returned investigation draft tells a Biology specialist more in five minutes than a phone call does in thirty. It shows whether the loss is recall, command term, data handling or time, and those four problems need different hours.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

A full session with the matched tutor, online, at no charge and with no card held. It should end with a written list of the specific gaps found and an honest estimate of hours. If the tutor cannot name the gaps, that is useful information about the tutor.

  4. 04

Agree the mode and the slot

Weekly content hour, investigation supervision block, or pre-examination repair. Pick one deliberately rather than drifting into whichever the term suggests. Fix the slot in Gulf Standard Time around the school run and prayer times, and keep it stable; a moving slot is the commonest reason a plan quietly stops working.

  5. 05

    Review against marks, not impressions

Every four to six weeks, look at marked work rather than how the sessions felt. Paper scores by component, investigation criterion bands, and the list of named gaps closed. If none of those has moved in six weeks, change the tutor or change the mode. Both are reasonable.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The price is on the page, with sources

Three of the six competitor pages measured for this subject publish no figure at all and the two that do quote dollars. The AED ranges here are attributed to the provider or rate table that published them, with the model they apply to named, so you can check them rather than take them.

One tutor, one student, every session

Higher Level Biology support is diagnostic work on one student's specific errors. That does not survive a group format, because the command-term mistake your child makes is not the one the student beside them makes. Every session is one-to-one over live video.

The academic-honesty line is stated, not implied

A tutor teaches research design, teaches statistics, explains what each criterion rewards and gives feedback on work the student has produced. Supplying text or data for an assessed report is malpractice under IB rules and an expulsion risk for the student. Providers in this market sell completed reports; that is the practice being refused here.

Availability is disclosed before you commit

If no Higher Level Biology specialist is free for the slot you want, you are told that, with the options: a different time, a different tutor profile, or a wait with a date on it. Where a matched tutor is not UAE-resident, you know before the first lesson.

Regulators named accurately and nothing more

ADEK oversees Abu Dhabi private schools, KHDA oversees Dubai's, SPEA oversees Sharjah's, and the MoHRE permit governs individual tutors. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from any of them, nor from the IB, and no page here will suggest otherwise.

Built around the Abu Dhabi calendar

Session times run 16:30 to 20:00 Gulf Standard Time and shift after Iftar during Ramadan. Plans are built backwards from the school's own investigation and mock deadlines, which in this emirate sit earlier than families expect.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does a Higher Level Biology tutor cost per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Market rates for IB specialist tutoring in the UAE run roughly AED 200 to AED 450 an hour, and Higher Level Biology sits in the upper half of that band. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Unitors lists IB tuition from AED 200. Entry tiers advertised from AED 33 to AED 65 are university-student and group formats rather than Higher Level science specialists. Ask any provider which of those models their quoted rate belongs to before comparing it with another.

Why is Higher Level Biology priced above Standard Level if the rate is the same?+

The hourly rate is usually identical. The total is not, because Higher Level is examined over two papers and carries an additional depth layer woven through every theme rather than added as a separate unit. That means more sessions across the two years, not a higher price per session. A Higher Level plan also cannot be assembled by teaching the Standard Level course and bolting depth on at the end, which is why the sequencing has to start in DP1. Families who buy Higher Level support late pay for the same content twice.

How many marks is the Biology scientific investigation, and how are they split?+

It carries 20% of the subject grade and 24 marks, divided evenly across four criteria at six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Research design is the one that decides the other three, because a question that cannot be controlled produces data that cannot be analysed. Evaluation is usually the cheapest band to move, since most mid-band drafts list generic limitations rather than the specific weaknesses their own method produced. Confirm the current criteria and marks against the subject guide your child's Diploma coordinator holds for their examination session.

Can a tutor help with the Biology investigation without breaking the IB's honesty rules?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor can teach research design, teach the statistics the data needs, explain exactly what each of the four criteria rewards, and give feedback on a draft the student has already produced. What a tutor cannot do is supply text, supply data, or edit a draft into a submission. The report must be the student's own work and the school supervisor records that authenticity as part of the assessment. Some providers in this market sell completed reports outright; that is malpractice under IB rules and an expulsion risk for the student.

Does ADEK allow my child's own Biology teacher to tutor them privately for a fee?+

Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff indicates teachers are prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that bars the same thing. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. The practical effect is that the cheapest option many Abu Dhabi parents consider first is closed, and the lawful local pool is smaller than the number of Biology teachers in the emirate suggests.

Does a private Biology tutor in Abu Dhabi need a permit, and does it cost anything?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so treat any specific figure you are quoted with suspicion. MoHRE's own Private Tutor Licensing service lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time.

Do you send a Biology tutor to our villa in Khalifa City?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India. Every Abu Dhabi lesson runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The reason is worth stating rather than hiding: a Khalifa City family searching for someone who can drive over is limited to the Higher Level Biology tutors who live within a tolerable drive at 17:30 on a weekday. On screen the pool is every current-guide specialist available at that hour, which for a narrow subject is a materially different set of people.

Is an in-home Biology tutor actually more expensive than an online one in this emirate?+

Not reliably on rate. Bestimate puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and UAE home tutors generally at AED 200 to AED 500 once travel is included, against AED 200 to AED 450 for an online IB specialist. The ranges overlap. What differs is the pool you can reach and the scheduling: a tutor crossing the mainland in afternoon traffic cannot hold two consecutive evening slots, and a 30-minute diagnostic the night before a mock is not a journey anyone makes. Decide on reach and flexibility rather than on rate.

My son is scoring 5s in Higher Level Biology. How many hours does a 6 take?+

Nobody can honestly answer that before seeing marked work, and any provider who quotes a figure on the phone is guessing. What a diagnostic can establish quickly is which of four failures is costing the marks: recall gaps, command-term misreading, data-handling weakness in the Paper 1 data section, or running out of time. Each needs a different number of hours. Command-term repair is often the fastest, sometimes four to six sessions. Genuine content gaps across several themes take a term. Send one marked Paper 2 question and the trial lesson will produce a specific estimate.

We are starting in the February of DP2. Is that too late for Higher Level Biology?+

It is not too late to move a grade, but it changes what you can buy and what it costs. At that point the investigation is submitted and the research-design marks are fixed, so the work is entirely on the two written papers. Expect two sessions a week rather than one, built around marked papers rather than content teaching, and expect evening and weekend slots to be scarce because every Diploma family in the emirate is looking at the same time. The same total hours bought eighteen months earlier would have gone further.

Which part of Paper 1 costs Abu Dhabi students the most marks?+

The data-based section, consistently. Students who have revised well arrive able to recall processes and then meet an unfamiliar data set with error bars, awkward units and a trend they are asked to quantify rather than describe. Strong recall stops helping there. The repair is unseen data: a long run of data sets the student has never met, with the question stems removed so they have to decide what the data can support. That drill transfers directly to the extended-response marks in Paper 2 as well.

Can one tutor take Higher Level Biology and Higher Level Chemistry for the same student?+

Often, and it usually saves money. The two courses share enzyme kinetics, buffers, bonding and a good deal of the quantitative handling, so a single tutor explains the shared ground once rather than twice. Abu Dhabi families who book the two separately frequently pay for the same explanation in both slots. The caveat is depth: ask directly which of the two the tutor has taught at Higher Level most recently, and whether they have supervised investigations in both. A generalist across both sciences is not the same as a specialist in either.

Does Higher Level Biology help with UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency rules are set by curriculum track rather than by individual subject strength. The published British-track requirement is five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level at E or two Advanced Subsidiary Levels at the same grade. No IB points threshold could be read on an official ministry source, so no figure is published here; one competitor's claim that six IGCSE subjects are required is incorrect. Verify your child's position on the ministry's own channel.

What happens to our weekly Biology session during Ramadan in Abu Dhabi?+

It moves. School hours shorten, and a 17:30 slot that worked in January is usually the wrong time in Ramadan. Most families shift to a post-Iftar slot, commonly between 21:00 and 22:30 Gulf Standard Time, and some drop to a shorter session twice a week rather than one long one. Because delivery is online there is no travel to rearrange around the changed hours. Tell us at the start of the month and the slot is rebooked for the whole period rather than renegotiated week by week.

What should the first Higher Level Biology session actually produce?+

A written list, not a feeling. By the end of the free trial you should have the specific gaps the tutor found, named by theme and by error type, an honest view of whether the problem is content or command terms, and an estimate of hours with a reason attached. If the investigation is live, you should also have a judgement on whether the research question can be controlled as written. A session that ends with general encouragement and no list has told you nothing you can act on.

Start with one marked paper and a free trial

Higher Level Biology is a two-paper subject with a 24-mark investigation attached, and the cost of supporting it in Abu Dhabi depends far more on when you start and what you buy than on the hourly rate. Market rates for IB specialists run AED 200 to AED 450, the sources are named on this page, and the honest saving available to most families is buying fewer hours earlier rather than more hours in the final term. Send one marked Paper 2 question and the school's investigation deadline, take the free trial online, and decide after it.
