IB MYP Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

An IB MYP tutor in Ras Al Khaimah is usually the fourth option a family considers, after the school's own intervention, a group class at a local centre and a freelance tutor shared with neighbours. This page compares those four honestly and then explains what IB Gram actually does: one-to-one Middle Years Programme teaching over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial lesson and a look at your child's last criterion-marked task.

  • Four options compared side by side, not one pitched
  • Criterion-marked tasks read before the first paid hour
  • Subject specialists matched to MYP 1 through MYP 5
  • Lessons delivered live online; no UAE home visits

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

The question is not whether to hire a tutor, but which of four things to buy

Almost nobody searches for an IB MYP tutor in Ras Al Khaimah as a first move. By the time a parent types that phrase, something has already happened: a report arrived with a 4 in a subject that used to read 6, or a teacher wrote a comment about "inconsistent application of criterion C" that nobody at home could decode. The sensible next step is rarely obvious, because the Middle Years Programme does not produce the artefacts parents know how to read. There is no percentage. There is no past paper to work through. There is a grid of letters and a number between one and eight.

So the real decision is a choice between four things, and they are not interchangeable. The first is the support the school already owes you, which is free and underused. The second is a group class at a tuition centre in Al Nakheel or Al Dhait, which is cheap per hour and usually built around an examination syllabus rather than MYP criteria. The third is a freelance tutor who drives to the villa, often shared between two or three families on the same street. The fourth is a subject specialist working one-to-one over live video, which is what IB Gram arranges.

Each of those four is the right answer for somebody. A Year 7 student who has simply stopped doing the set work does not need a specialist; they need the school's homework club and a parent who checks the planner. A MYP 5 student whose science teacher has left mid-year and whose criterion D marks have collapsed does need a specialist, and in the northern emirates that person is unlikely to live within driving distance. Ras Al Khaimah has a small private-school set concentrated around Al Nakheel, Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab, and the pool of adults who have marked MYP sciences against the published descriptors is correspondingly small.

That scarcity is the whole reason this page exists in the form it does. In Dubai, a parent choosing between a local visiting tutor and an online specialist is choosing between two reasonably deep pools. In Ras Al Khaimah, the local pool for a specific MYP subject at a specific year level is often one person or none. Comparing the four options therefore gives a different answer here than it would in Jumeirah, and anybody who tells you otherwise has not tried to staff a MYP 5 integrated sciences slot north of Umm Al Quwain in February.

What follows is the comparison, the parts of the Middle Years Programme that make it different to teach, what the market charges around the emirate in dirhams, and what the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge actually controls at your child's school. Lessons from IB Gram are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tutors at the door are a service we run only in India, and saying so plainly is more useful to you than a promise we would have to break.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Ras Al Khaimah families meet the Middle Years Programme either inside an IB continuum school or when transferring from a British or Indian stream. The programmes below are the ones that sit either side of MYP, because a middle-years decision is almost always also a decision about what comes next.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Five years of concept-led study across eight subject groups, marked against four published criteria per subject on a 1-8 strand scale. Teachers set the tasks; the IB sets the criteria. The programme ends with the Personal Project in MYP 5, and schools may enter students for IB-set on-screen examinations and ePortfolios leading to the MYP Certificate. Nothing in MYP produces a transcript grade a university reads, which changes what tutoring is for.

In Ras Al Khaimah the MYP cohort inside any single school is small, so a year group often runs one teaching set per subject with no streaming. A student who is ahead and a student who is behind sit in the same room with the same task. That is the specific gap one-to-one support fills here, and it is a different gap from the one a Dubai family describes.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Two years, six subject groups, three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and creativity, activity, service. Assessment switches to externally marked examinations in a May session for schools in this hemisphere, with internal assessment contributing a published share of each subject grade. The jump in written volume from MYP 5 is the single biggest complaint we hear from Year 12 students.

Ras Al Khaimah students who continue into the Diploma usually do so at the same campus they were already attending, which means the MYP 5 subject choices effectively set the Diploma option blocks. Getting MYP 5 mathematics and sciences to a secure level is therefore a decision about Higher Level availability two years later, not just about this year's report.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

The two-year examined alternative most Ras Al Khaimah schools run instead of MYP 4 and 5. Assessment is by externally marked papers in a June or November series, with a Core or Extended tier in Cambridge syllabuses that sets a ceiling on the achievable grade. Students transferring in from MYP meet timed papers and mark schemes for the first time, which is a skills change rather than a content change.

Several families in the emirate move a child from an MYP stream into an IGCSE stream at the end of MYP 3, usually because a sibling is already in the British system or because a planned relocation makes examined qualifications simpler to carry. The transition work is mostly about examination technique, not about catching up on content.

PYPAges 3-12 · Years 1-6

Primary Years Programme

The IB's primary framework, ending in the Year 6 exhibition. Reporting is descriptive rather than graded, so parents arriving into MYP 1 meet a numbered scale for the first time and frequently misread it. Support at this stage is almost entirely about reading fluency and secure number facts, both of which predict MYP performance better than anything a middle-years tutor can repair later.

Where a Ras Al Khaimah school runs the full continuum, the move from the Year 6 exhibition into MYP 1 happens on the same campus with the same staff, which hides the change in assessment language. Parents often ask for MYP support in the first term of Year 7 when the actual issue is that nobody explained what a criterion level means.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP subject groups are taught through concepts and contexts rather than a content checklist, so a tutor has to work from your child's own unit planner and task sheet. The subjects below are the ones Ras Al Khaimah families ask about most for MYP 3 to MYP 5.

Mathematics (MYP)

Standard and Extended

Four branches: number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability. Criterion A rewards knowing and understanding, criterion B investigating patterns, criterion C communicating, criterion D applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Most lost marks sit in B and D, where students produce a correct answer with no general rule and no evaluation of its validity.

Integrated Sciences (MYP)

MYP 1-3 integrated, MYP 4-5 by discipline

Criterion B asks the student to design a method with a clear variable structure; criterion C asks them to process and present data and then interpret it. Students lose heavily by describing a graph instead of explaining it, and by writing a conclusion that restates the hypothesis rather than testing it against the evidence collected.

Biology (MYP 4-5)

Separate discipline

Cells, systems, ecology and genetics taught through global contexts. The written tasks demand scientific vocabulary used precisely, and criterion D requires a reasoned position on the implications of science for people and the environment. A student who revises definitions but never practises the evaluative paragraph plateaus at a 5.

Chemistry (MYP 4-5)

Separate discipline

Bonding, moles, rates and energetics, with laboratory work feeding criteria B and C. The common failure is arithmetic in mole calculations combined with units dropped halfway through. Working accurately with significant figures is a criterion C issue rather than a content issue, and it is fixable in a handful of sessions.

Physics (MYP 4-5)

Separate discipline

Forces, energy, waves, electricity and the relationship between equations and physical meaning. Students who can rearrange a formula often cannot say what it predicts, which is exactly what criterion A probes at the higher levels. Graph-gradient interpretation is the single most profitable thing to practise before MYP 5 ends.

English Language and Literature

Language A

Four criteria covering analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Marks are lost in criterion A when a student summarises a text instead of analysing how meaning is constructed, and in criterion C when a creative response ignores the stated audience and purpose. The paired text analysis is the task most worth rehearsing.

English Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Comprehension of spoken and written text, plus speaking and writing in the target language, graded against the phase the student is placed in. A phase placement that is too low flatters the report and hides a problem; a placement that is too high produces consistent 3s and 4s from a capable student. Both are worth checking.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

History, geography and economics content delivered through investigation. Criterion B is an investigation plan with a research question the student formulated, and criterion D asks for a substantiated argument. Source evaluation that names provenance, purpose and limitation earns marks that most students leave on the table.

Design (MYP)

MYP 1-5

The design cycle: inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, evaluating. Every criterion rewards documented process, so a strong product with a thin design folder scores poorly. Students need to be taught that the folder is the assessment, not the artefact, and that is usually news to them.

Arabic (Language Acquisition or Language A)

Phases, or first language

Arabic runs alongside the MYP in every UAE private school as a federal requirement, with separate provision for Arabic speakers and non-Arabic speakers. Support has to match the stream the school has placed the student in, and a tutor who teaches first-language Arabic to an acquisition-phase student wastes the hour.

Mathematics Extended (MYP 5)

Extended pathway

The extended pathway adds content aimed at students heading for Higher Level mathematics in the Diploma. A student kept in standard mathematics through MYP 5 can still take Analysis and Approaches, but the first term of Year 12 is noticeably harder. The decision point is usually in MYP 4, earlier than parents expect.

Personal Project (MYP 5)

Culminating project

A self-directed project assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, supported by a process journal and a supervisor at school. A tutor may teach project-management habits, question an argument and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not contribute content to the report or the product.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session shapes cover almost every middle-years request we take from the emirate. All three run over live video with a shared screen and a document both sides can write on.

Weekly one-to-one, one subject

A single sixty-minute slot in the same place each week, built around the unit your child's teacher is currently assessing. The tutor works from the task sheet and the criterion descriptors the school issued, so the session output is the thing that will actually be marked rather than a parallel curriculum.

  • Sixty minutes, same slot weekly, one named tutor
  • Driven by the school's current unit planner and task sheet
  • Written feedback against the criterion strands after each session
  • Suited to MYP 1 to MYP 4 where the problem is one subject

Criterion repair block

A short, defined course of six to eight sessions aimed at one or two criteria that keep scoring low across subjects. Investigating patterns in mathematics and designing a method in sciences are the two that recur. The block ends with a marked task and a written statement of what changed and what has not.

  • Six to eight sessions with a stated start and end
  • Targets a criterion, not a whole subject
  • Uses the student's own previously marked work as the baseline
  • Finishes with a verdict, including when further hours are not warranted

MYP 5 transition support

Work aimed at the twelve months spanning the Personal Project and the move into the Diploma or into Year 10 IGCSE. The focus is written volume, independent scheduling and the habits a Diploma year assumes a student already has. Content gaps get attention only where they block the next programme.

  • Project-management and drafting habits for the Personal Project
  • Extended writing at the length the next programme expects
  • Mathematics bridging for Analysis and Approaches or Extended IGCSE
  • Honest advice where the stronger route is the other programme

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

The four options a Ras Al Khaimah family is actually choosing between

  • Ask the school first; the free hour is the one most often unused
  • A centre class teaches a syllabus, not your child's unit planner
  • A visiting tutor's rate contains the drive whether or not it is listed
  • Online removes travel, which is the binding constraint north of Umm Al Quwain

An IB MYP tutor in Ras Al Khaimah is one of four things a household can buy, and the cheapest of the four is free. Every IB school runs some form of additional support: a subject surgery at lunchtime, a homework club, a teacher who will look at a draft if asked. Families routinely pay for hours before using the ones they have already funded through fees. The first question to ask the form tutor is which of these exists for your child's subject and on which day, because the answer is often more specific than the website suggests.

The second option is a group class at a tuition centre, of which Al Dhait and Al Nakheel have several. These are inexpensive per hour and they suit a student who needs structured practice and company. The limitation is structural rather than a criticism: a centre teaching eight students from four schools cannot work from one school's unit planner, so it teaches an examination syllabus. For an IGCSE candidate that is exactly right. For an MYP 3 student whose criterion B marks are the problem, it is teaching the wrong artefact.

The third option is a freelance tutor who drives to the house, often shared with another family on the same street. The strength is obvious: someone in the room, a parent who can see the hour happening, no connection to manage. The cost is in the travel, which is inside the quoted rate whether or not it is itemised, and in the pool. Across the northern emirates the number of adults who have taught and marked a specific MYP subject at a specific year level is small, and the subset willing to drive to Digdaga at 18:00 is smaller.

The fourth option is a subject specialist over live video, which is what IB Gram arranges and the only format we deliver in the UAE. It removes the travel constraint entirely, which in this emirate is the constraint that decides who is available. It asks something back: a quiet place, a device with a working camera, and a student who will write on a shared document while being watched. For a Year 7 who needs supervision more than instruction, option one or two is the better buy, and we will say so in the trial lesson.

MYP against IGCSE at the same age, for a family in this emirate

A large share of middle-years enquiries from Ras Al Khaimah come from households comparing two systems rather than struggling inside one. The emirate runs both: an IB continuum provision on the southern coast and a larger set of British and Indian campuses on the city side. A parent with one child in MYP 4 and another in Year 10 IGCSE is looking at two reports that describe the same age group in incompatible language, and asking which one is better preparation.

The honest answer is that they prepare for different things and the right choice depends on where the child is going. IGCSE produces externally marked grades at sixteen that travel anywhere and that the UAE Ministry of Education counts for equivalency: five accredited subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, according to the ministry's clarification reported in July 2026. MYP produces no such certificate unless the school enters students for the optional on-screen examinations, and its value is in the skills the Diploma then assumes.

What that means practically for a Ras Al Khaimah family is this. If relocation outside the UAE is likely before Year 12, examined IGCSE qualifications are simpler to carry and easier for a receiving school to place. If the child will continue into the Diploma on the same campus, MYP 4 and 5 are the two years where the extended writing, the investigation structure and the independent scheduling get built, and skipping them makes Year 12 harder. Neither route is a mistake; choosing on reputation rather than on the next three years is.

The tutoring consequence differs too. An IGCSE student needs past papers, mark schemes and timed practice, all of which exist in quantity. An MYP student needs their own task sheet read against the criterion descriptors, because no past paper exists and no mark scheme will ever be published. A tutor who treats the second student like the first will spend the hour on content the school has already covered and leave the actual problem untouched.

03

Why an MYP 6 is not 75 per cent, and what the 1-8 scale records

  • Four criteria per subject, each marked 1-8 against published descriptors
  • A criterion level is a description of performance, not a fraction of marks
  • Subject grades come from a total read against IB boundaries, not an average
  • A criterion that is low in every subject is the single most useful diagnostic a parent has

The most common conversation we have with a new Ras Al Khaimah family is arithmetic. A report shows criterion A at 6, criterion B at 4, criterion C at 7 and criterion D at 5, and then a subject grade. Parents reasonably try to average those, convert to a percentage and compare with a cousin's school report. That arithmetic does not work, and believing it does leads to the wrong purchase.

Each criterion is marked against published descriptors in bands, usually four bands of two marks, with eight as the top. A level is a statement about what the student demonstrated in that task, not a share of available marks. A 6 in criterion A says the student showed substantial knowledge and understanding of the content, applied it accurately in familiar and some unfamiliar situations. It does not say they got three-quarters of something right. Two students with the same 6 can have produced very different work.

The subject grade is then produced by adding the criterion levels for the subject and reading the total against boundaries the IB publishes for that subject group. The boundaries are not evenly spaced and the criteria are not equally weighted across tasks, because a teacher assesses each criterion only when a unit gives a genuine opportunity to. A term with two investigation-heavy units will weight criterion B much more than the term before it, which is why a grade can move without the student changing.

What this gives a tutor is precision rather than mystery. If criterion B is a 3 across three subjects and criterion A is a 6, the problem is not knowledge and it is not effort. It is that nobody has taught the student how to design an investigation, state a general rule and test its validity. That is a teachable procedure, it takes weeks rather than terms, and it is invisible to anyone reading the report as a percentage.

04

The Personal Project, the process journal and the supervision boundary

In MYP 5 every student completes a Personal Project: something they chose, planned, made and then reported on, assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting. It runs alongside everything else for most of the year, and it is the first piece of genuinely self-managed work most students have ever attempted. Ras Al Khaimah students doing this inside a small cohort get a supervisor at school who is also supervising fifteen others.

The assessed object is not the product. A student can build a functioning app, run a beach clean-up or compose a piece of music and still score poorly, because what is marked is the documented process: the goal and its criteria for success, the evidence of research and of skill development, the reflection on how the product measures against the criteria the student set. The process journal is where that evidence lives, and it is where projects are lost. A journal written retrospectively in April reads exactly like what it is.

A tutor's role here is tightly bounded and worth stating in plain words. A tutor may teach a student how to break a long project into weekly milestones, how to keep a journal that records decisions rather than feelings, how to write a research question narrow enough to answer, and how to read their own draft against the criteria. A tutor may give feedback on work the student has written. A tutor may not supply content for the report or the product, and may not edit a draft into something the student could not have produced. Those boundaries come from IB academic honesty rules, and a breach puts the student's result at risk, not the tutor's.

The practical sequence that works is simple and nobody teaches it. Fix the goal and the success criteria in writing by the end of the first month. Record one journal entry a week, dated, naming a decision and a reason. Build the product with four weeks to spare. Write the report against the criteria in the order the criteria appear. A tutor who holds a student to that sequence is worth more in MYP 5 than one who knows more about the subject.

05

On-screen examinations and ePortfolios: the optional certificate route

The Middle Years Programme has an optional external assessment route. Schools can enter MYP 5 students for IB-set on-screen examinations in a range of subjects and submit moderated ePortfolios for others, including language acquisition, physical and health education, design and the Personal Project. Completing the required combination leads to the MYP Certificate. Many schools do not use this route at all, and that is a legitimate choice rather than a shortfall.

Why it matters to a Ras Al Khaimah parent is comparability. Without external assessment, every grade on an MYP report is produced in-house and moderated internally, which is fine for teaching and awkward for a family trying to judge whether a 5 at their school means what a 5 means elsewhere. An externally set on-screen examination produces a mark nobody at the school controlled. If your child's school offers this route, the result is the most objective measurement of middle-years performance you will see before the Diploma.

The first thing to do is find out, in writing, whether your child's school enters students at all, and for which subjects. The answer changes what a final MYP 5 year looks like. On-screen examinations are timed, two-hour assessments taken on a computer with resources supplied in the task, which rewards a very different skill from a coursework-paced criterion task: reading quickly under time pressure and writing to a structure without a draft. A student who has only ever been assessed over a fortnight finds that unfamiliar.

If the school does enter students, the useful preparation is procedural. Practise typing extended answers under time. Practise reading a supplied stimulus and extracting what the question needs in five minutes rather than twenty. Practise finishing. None of that requires new subject content, and all of it is the kind of thing a weekly hour between February and the assessment window can genuinely change.

06

What middle-years support costs around Ras Al Khaimah, in dirhams

Nobody ranking for this query publishes a rate in dirhams, so here is the market, with the band each figure comes from. These are market rates, not an IB Gram price list. Our own arrangement starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation, and what a plan costs depends on the subject, the year and how many weeks are left, so quoting a single number here would be dishonest.

The broad shape of the market is consistent across sources. Budget online tutoring and university-student tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online sits roughly between AED 150 and AED 300; Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home one-to-one, with travel inside the number, runs roughly AED 180 to AED 500, with Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table putting the common band at AED 180 to 350 and visiting tutors reaching AED 500. Specialist IB and IGCSE tutors sit between AED 200 and AED 450 and above, and premium named or examiner-led tutors are advertised higher still, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

Middle years sits at the lower end of those bands, which surprises parents who expect the opposite. Diploma Higher Level and examination-year IGCSE work command the premium because the pool is thinner and the stakes are nearer. MYP 1 to MYP 3 support is usually priced like general secondary tutoring. The exception is MYP 5 work tied to the Personal Project or to an on-screen examination entry, where the specific experience is rarer and the rate behaves accordingly.

Two things move the number more than anything else in this emirate. The first is travel: a visiting tutor coming from Ras Al Khaimah city to Al Hamra or Mina Al Arab is giving up forty to sixty minutes in each direction, and that time is paid for somewhere. The second is scarcity: a request for an MYP 4 chemistry specialist in the northern emirates has a much smaller pool than a request for general mathematics, and a thin pool prices accordingly whatever the format.

What the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge approves, beyond inspecting

Private schools in the UAE are not all overseen by the same body, and the difference matters when you are reading a report or asking a school to justify a decision. Dubai schools answer to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which the federal portal describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain answer to the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools there. Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority. Ras Al Khaimah has its own Department of Knowledge.

The federal description of the Ras Al Khaimah authority goes further than inspection. It states that the Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is a materially different power from grading a school once every few years. It means that when a Ras Al Khaimah school adds a programme, changes an assessment approach or revises fees, a regulator inside this emirate has signed it off. Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah sit with the federal Ministry of Education instead.

For a parent, the practical use is leverage and expectation-setting. If a school proposes to change how middle years is assessed, the question "has the Department of Knowledge approved this change?" is a legitimate one. If a fee increase is announced, the approving body is identifiable. And if an inspection report exists for your child's school, it is the only published independent judgement you will get, so reading the sections on teaching and on assessment matters more than reading the headline band.

One thing IB Gram will not claim, on this page or anywhere: we hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board. A permit to operate a tutoring institute with premises in Dubai is a specific instrument issued to training institutes, and we do not hold one. Any tutoring service describing itself as regulator-approved is worth questioning carefully.

The twelve months from MYP 5 into the Diploma, and what to fix first

  • Written volume grown gradually across MYP 5, not in the summer before Year 12
  • Mathematics pathway decided in MYP 4 if Higher Level is the intention
  • Personal Project treated as a project-management exercise with weekly milestones
  • A weekly plan built from real available hours, including the commute

The single most valuable thing middle-years tutoring can do in Ras Al Khaimah is make the Diploma year survivable, because the students who struggle in Year 12 are overwhelmingly not the ones who lacked content. They are the ones who had never written three thousand words to a deadline, never managed four competing pieces of coursework, and never had to decide what not to do in a week. MYP 5 is where those capacities get built or do not.

Start with written volume. A Diploma subject expects extended answers under time and, in the core, a four-thousand-word Extended Essay. A student whose longest piece of writing is eight hundred words in a fortnight is in for a shock. The fix is unglamorous: increase length gradually across the year, write to a structure rather than to inspiration, and finish things. Half-written drafts teach nothing.

Then the mathematics decision, which closes earlier than families realise. A student in standard rather than extended mathematics through MYP 4 and 5 can still enter Analysis and Approaches, but the first term is markedly harder and some schools will advise against it. If the intention is Higher Level mathematics or a degree route that expects it, the bridging work belongs in MYP 4, not in the summer before Year 12. Six months of one weekly hour closes most of that gap; six weeks does not.

Finally, scheduling. Diploma students in this emirate commute, some of them a long way, and the hours available are fewer than a timetable suggests. The habit of planning a week on paper, with the hours actually available rather than the hours in theory, is the one most reliably missing. It can be taught in MYP 5 by a tutor who insists on it, and it is worth more than another term of content revision. Where we think a student needs this more than subject teaching, we will say so rather than sell the hour.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah's private schools sit in a handful of clusters, and the practical consequence for a middle-years timetable is the drive home. These are the parts of the emirate families contact us from, with the scheduling reality each one carries.

Al Nakheel

The dense city side, close to the main Indian and British campuses. Students are typically home within twenty minutes, so a 16:00 start is realistic for MYP 1 to MYP 3 and a 17:30 start works for older students who need a break first.

Al Hamra and Al Hamra Village

Gated communities on the southern coast with the IB continuum campuses nearby. The school run is short but activity programmes often run until 16:30, which pushes the usable lesson window to 17:00 and later on three days of the week.

Mina Al Arab and Hayat Island

Residential coastal development with a growing school-age population and a bus route that adds thirty to forty minutes for families at the far end. A 17:00 or 18:00 slot holds here across the year; a 16:00 slot does not survive October.

Al Dhait North and South

Established inland residential districts where several tuition centres operate. Many families here have already tried a group class, which makes the comparison in this page's first table the question they actually arrive with.

Khuzam

Close to a British campus, with a mix of staff and local families. Siblings in different year groups are common, so households here more often need two sequential slots in one evening than a single long session.

Al Marjan Island

Reclaimed islands with newer residential stock and longer internal drives. Parents here are frequently commuting back from Dubai or Umm Al Quwain at lesson time, which is an argument for a session that needs no adult in the room to supervise a visitor.

Al Mairid and Al Uraibi

Older central districts with the shortest commutes in the emirate. The constraint here is not travel but the number of children sharing one quiet space, which is a genuine reason to pick a 19:00 slot over a 16:30 one.

Digdaga and the inland belt

Agricultural and semi-rural areas south-east of the city with no international school within easy reach. Students travel in, often by bus, and the realistic lesson window starts after 18:00 on weekdays with weekend mornings doing the heavier work.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

Al Hamra and the southern coast

The IB continuum provision in the emirate sits in this cluster, which is why MYP questions concentrate here. A small cohort means one teaching set per subject per year group in most cases, so differentiation inside the classroom is limited by arithmetic rather than by effort.

  • RAK Academy - British School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - International School Al Hamra
  • RAK Academy - British School Khuzam
  • RAK English Speaking School

Al Nakheel, Khuzam and Al Uraibi

The city-side campuses, mostly Indian and British curriculum, where MYP questions arrive from families considering a transfer rather than families already inside the programme. The comparison that matters for them is MYP against IGCSE at the same age.

  • The Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Our Own English High School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Scholars Indian School Ras Al Khaimah
  • Little Flower English School Ras Al Khaimah

Campuses Ras Al Khaimah families also consider

Some households drive south for a programme the emirate does not offer, or keep a place in Ajman or Sharjah after relocating north. A cross-emirate school run of an hour each way changes which lesson slots are possible more than any other single factor.

  • Ajman Academy
  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Sharjah English School
  • Wesgreen International School, Sharjah

Schools are named here as context for the Ras Al Khaimah schooling picture; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied or claimed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send what the school has already marked

The most useful thing you can send is two or three criterion-marked tasks with the teacher's comments and the task sheet, plus the latest report. Those three documents tell a specialist more in ten minutes than a conversation does in an hour, because they show which criterion is failing rather than which subject feels hard.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson with the subject tutor

The trial is taught by the person who would teach the course, not by a salesperson, and it is a lesson rather than a sales call. It is free with no card required. You get a written note afterwards saying what the tutor thinks the problem is, what a block of work would target, and whether a tutor is the right purchase at all.

  3. 03

Agree a block with a stated end

We prefer a defined block of six to eight sessions with a target and a finish date to an open-ended weekly commitment. It forces a verdict. At the end of the block you get the student's marked work, a statement of what moved, and a recommendation that may well be to stop or to switch subject.

  4. 04

A slot that survives the Ras Al Khaimah school run

We fix the time around the actual commute, not around a theoretical one. Families in Mina Al Arab and the inland belt usually need a 17:30 or later start; Al Nakheel and Al Uraibi households can hold 16:00. Gulf Standard Time is the scheduling reference and the tutor works to it, not the other way round.

  5. 05

Review against the criteria, not against a feeling

Every few sessions the tutor writes a short note against the specific criterion strands being targeted, with the student's own work attached. If the criterion levels are not moving after a block, that is reported as a fact rather than reframed. Changing tutor or stopping are both legitimate outcomes of a review.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The comparison before the pitch

This page compares four options and names the two situations where our format is the wrong buy. A household that needs an adult sitting beside a Year 7 for an hour is better served by the school's homework club or a local visiting tutor, and we would rather say that in the trial lesson than take the money.

Matched on subject and year, not on postcode

Travel is the constraint that decides who is available in the northern emirates. Removing it means an MYP 4 chemistry request is matched against everyone qualified to teach it rather than against the handful of people who could drive to Al Hamra by six o'clock on a Tuesday.

Works from your school's own task sheet

There is no MYP past paper and there never will be. Sessions are built from the unit planner, the task sheet and the criterion descriptors your child's teacher is using, so what the student produces in the hour is the thing that will actually be marked at school.

Clear on the academic-honesty line

A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on work the student wrote. No tutor on this platform contributes content to a Personal Project report, a draft or any assessed task. That boundary protects your child's result, and the essay mills competing for this search do not respect it.

No regulator or board claims

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and we do not operate a UAE office or centre. Every regulatory fact on this page is attributed to the authority that published it so you can check it yourself.

Prices as a market, not as a mystery

Market rates in dirhams are published here with the source of each band named and dated, which three of six ranking competitors do not do at all. What a plan costs depends on subject, year and weeks remaining, and that is settled in the consultation rather than guessed at here.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Is an MYP tutor in Ras Al Khaimah different from a general secondary tutor?+

Yes, in one respect that matters. The Middle Years Programme has no past papers and no published mark schemes, so a tutor cannot work from the artefacts most tutoring is built on. They have to read your child's own task sheet against the four published criterion descriptors for that subject and work out which criterion is losing marks. A strong general mathematics tutor who has never seen a criterion B descriptor will teach competent mathematics and leave the assessed weakness untouched. Ask any candidate to explain what criterion B asks for in their subject. The answer tells you quickly whether they have taught the programme.

My child's MYP report shows a 4 in criterion B but a 6 in criterion A. What does that actually mean?+

It means knowledge is not the problem. Criterion A rewards knowing and understanding the content; criterion B, in mathematics and the sciences, rewards investigating patterns or designing a method. A 6 with a 4 describes a student who knows the material and has never been taught the procedure for structuring an investigation, stating a general rule and testing whether it holds. That is a teachable sequence rather than a knowledge gap, which is good news: it usually moves within six to eight weekly sessions, and the same procedure transfers across every subject that assesses criterion B.

Does a 6 in an MYP subject mean roughly 75 per cent?+

No, and the conversion is worth unlearning early. Criterion levels run one to eight against published descriptors, in bands that describe what the student demonstrated rather than a share of marks available. Subject grades come from adding the criterion levels and reading the total against boundaries the IB publishes per subject group; those boundaries are not evenly spaced. A term weighted towards investigation units will move a grade without the student changing at all. The useful reading is not the grade but the pattern of criterion levels across subjects, which points at a specific teachable gap.

Where exactly does a tutor have to stop on an MYP 5 Personal Project?+

Yes, within a boundary that is worth stating precisely. A tutor may teach a student how to set a goal with success criteria, how to keep a process journal that records decisions, how to narrow a research question, how to plan weekly milestones and how to read their own draft against the assessment criteria. A tutor may give feedback on text the student has written. A tutor may not contribute content to the report or the product, and may not rewrite a draft into something the student could not produce. A breach puts the student's result at risk, which is why the line is non-negotiable.

Should we move our child from MYP into an IGCSE stream at a Ras Al Khaimah school?+

It depends on where the child is going rather than on which programme sounds stronger. If relocation outside the UAE is likely before Year 12, externally marked IGCSE grades at sixteen are easier for a receiving school to place and they count towards Ministry of Education equivalency. If the child will continue into the Diploma on the same campus, MYP 4 and 5 build the extended writing, investigation structure and independent scheduling the Diploma assumes. Both routes work. Decide on the next three years, and ask the school which option blocks each route leaves open.

Does the Ras Al Khaimah Department of Knowledge do more than inspect schools?+

It does. The federal portal states that the Ras Al Khaimah authority regulates private education in the emirate and that the Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is a broader power than inspection alone: a change to how your child's school assesses middle years, or to its fees, has been approved by a body inside this emirate. Dubai schools answer to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority instead, Abu Dhabi schools to the Department of Education and Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah schools to the federal Ministry of Education.

What does the MYP on-screen examination route involve, and does our school use it?+

Schools may enter MYP 5 students for IB-set on-screen examinations in a range of subjects and submit moderated ePortfolios in others, with the required combination leading to the MYP Certificate. Many schools choose not to, which is legitimate. Ask your school in writing whether it enters students and for which subjects, because the answer changes the final year. On-screen assessments are timed and taken on a computer with stimulus material supplied, which rewards fast reading and writing to a structure without a draft. A student assessed only over fortnight-long tasks finds that format unfamiliar and can be prepared for it.

How much do families around Ras Al Khaimah pay for middle-years tutoring?+

Market rates, not ours: budget online and university-student tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor online sits roughly AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Visiting in-home tutors run AED 180 to AED 500 with travel inside the number, per Bestimate's 2026 rate table. Middle years usually prices at the lower end, because the premium attaches to examination years and Higher Level work. We start with a free trial lesson and quote after it.

Is a group class at a tuition centre in Al Dhait a reasonable alternative?+

For some students, yes, and the price is attractive. The structural limit is that a centre teaching students from several schools cannot work from one school's unit planner, so it teaches an examination syllabus. That is exactly right for an IGCSE candidate and poorly matched to an MYP student whose criterion marks are the problem, because the assessed artefact is a school-set task rather than a paper. If your child mainly needs routine, company and somebody checking the work gets done, a centre class may do more good per dirham than a specialist hour.

Will a tutor come to our house in Al Hamra or Mina Al Arab?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. Every lesson for a Ras Al Khaimah family is delivered one-to-one over live video with a shared screen and a document both sides write on. The reason is not cost. The pool of people qualified to teach a specific MYP subject at a specific year level and willing to drive to Al Hamra by six o'clock is very small, and matching on subject rather than on driving distance is what makes a specialist available at all this far north.

My child is in MYP 2 and just will not do the set work. Is a specialist the right purchase?+

Probably not yet. A student who understands the material and is not doing it needs supervision, routine and consequences more than subject teaching, and those are cheaper elsewhere. Start with the school: ask which support sessions or homework clubs exist for that subject and on which day, because families routinely pay for hours while leaving funded ones unused. If the work is being done and still scoring low, that is when a criterion diagnosis earns its fee. We will say this in a trial lesson rather than sell a block that cannot fix the real problem.

How many sessions does a criterion problem usually take to shift?+

Where the issue is a procedure rather than missing content, six to eight weekly sessions is the usual range, and the evidence is a criterion level moving on a school-marked task rather than a feeling that things are better. Where content from earlier years is genuinely absent, it takes longer and the honest plan says so at the start. We prefer a defined block with a target and an end date, finishing with the student's marked work and a written verdict, because an open-ended weekly arrangement never produces the moment where someone asks whether it is working.

Does Arabic have to be studied alongside the Middle Years Programme in this emirate?+

Yes. Private schools in the UAE are not obliged to follow a specific national curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must follow the Ministry's general regulations. Schools run separate provision for Arabic speakers and non-Arabic speakers because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. For tutoring, the stream matters: first-language Arabic support given to a student placed in an acquisition phase wastes the hour. Check which stream the school has placed your child in before booking anything, and ask the school for the written phase or level.

What happens if no specialist is free for our MYP subject when we ask?+

You get told, with a date. Some combinations are genuinely thin: a specific MYP 4 or 5 science at short notice in a busy term is the usual example. We will either name a date when a matched tutor is available, offer a tutor who covers the adjacent subject where that is honestly useful, or say the request cannot be filled well and recommend you look locally. No competitor in the researched set discloses a coverage limit at all, and concealing one wastes a term that a family cannot get back.

How do we get started, and is the first lesson genuinely free?+

Send two or three criterion-marked tasks with the teacher's comments, the task sheet and the latest report, and say which year group and which subjects concern you. A subject tutor then teaches a free trial lesson, with no card required and no condition attached, and writes a note afterwards saying what they think the problem is and whether a block of work is warranted. If the answer is that school support or a local group class would do more, that is what the note will say. Lessons run over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Start by deciding which of the four options you actually need

Most Ras Al Khaimah families arrive at this page having already tried one thing that did not work, usually a group class bought for an MYP problem it was never designed to solve. The faster route is to read the criterion pattern on the last report, use the school support you have already paid for, and buy a specialist hour only where a named criterion is failing in a named subject. If that is where you are, send the marked work and the task sheet and take the free trial lesson with the tutor who would teach the course. You will get a written opinion on what is wrong and an honest answer about whether another hour a week is the thing that fixes it.
