IB MYP Mathematics Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

Most families looking for an IB MYP mathematics tutor in Ras Al Khaimah are choosing between four things, not one: the school's own catch-up provision, a group class at a local centre, a freelance tutor found through a community group, and one-to-one teaching over live video. This page compares all four on the terms that matter in this emirate, then says where our own one-to-one online lessons fit and where they do not.

  • Four options compared, including the two we do not sell
  • Permit checks a parent can actually run themselves
  • Lessons one-to-one over live video, Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in Ras Al Khaimah

Four options, and the one honest way to compare them

Ras Al Khaimah is the emirate the UAE tutoring market forgets. Of the sixty-odd competitor pages examined for this subject area, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain returned no mentions at all. That absence is a reasonable proxy for the ground truth: the number of resident teachers in this emirate who have marked IB Middle Years Programme mathematics against its published criteria is small, and a family in Al Hamra Village or Mina Al Arab discovers that within a week of starting to ask around.

So the decision in front of a RAK parent is not which tutor to pick from a long list. It is which of four different kinds of help to buy. The first is the school's own provision: an after-school clinic or a subject teacher's lunchtime catch-up, included in fees. The second is a group class at a tuition centre in RAK city, usually four to twelve students across mixed curricula. The third is an independent tutor found through a residents' group or a school parents' channel, working in your home. The fourth is one-to-one teaching over live video with a teacher who may be anywhere.

Each of those options is genuinely better than the others at something. School support is free and aligned to the exact scheme of work your child is following, which no external tutor can match. A centre group class is the cheapest paid option and imposes a weekly routine, which is sometimes the actual problem. A local freelancer is in the room, which matters for a younger or more distractible student. Online one-to-one gives access to a pool of MYP-trained teachers that does not exist within a forty-minute drive of Khuzam, and it marks against the criteria rather than against right answers.

They also fail at different things, and this is where comparison gets useful. A group class cannot change a criterion C habit, because changing it requires someone to read your child's written reasoning line by line every week. School support cannot usually diagnose across year groups, because the teacher running it is working from this term's scheme. A freelance tutor may be excellent and may also be undocumented, which is a question you have to ask rather than assume. And live video needs a stable connection and a parent who protects the slot, which not every household can offer.

IB Gram sells the fourth option only. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service, which is stated on every country page we publish. That means this page recommends the other three options where they are the better answer, and explains the permit and verification questions you should ask of any provider, including us. The rest of it covers how MYP mathematics is assessed, how RAK schools place students on the standard or extended route, what the Department of Knowledge actually approves, and what a term of weekly one-to-one work produces week by week.

At a glance

  • School clinic: free, scheme-aligned, not one-to-one
  • Centre group class: cheapest paid option, pace set by the group
  • Local freelancer: in the room, but a narrow pool and your own permit check
  • Online one-to-one: criterion-level marking, widest choice of teacher
  • Permit position is verifiable for every category of tutor
  • Free trial lesson before any commitment, no card details taken
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A Ras Al Khaimah MYP family is usually making two decisions at once: how to fill a gap now, and whether the Diploma is the destination at all, given that the nearest alternatives sit in other emirates. These are the three programmes that frame that choice.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Five years across eight subject groups, with mathematics assessed continuously against four criteria marked out of eight each rather than through a single terminal paper. The school converts the pattern of criterion levels into the 1 to 7 grade on the report, using its own boundaries. In the final year, mathematics splits into standard and extended routes and some schools enter candidates for on-screen eAssessment.

IB provision in Ras Al Khaimah is concentrated in a very small number of schools, with RAK Academy the established continuum option. The consequence is a thin local market in MYP-specific teaching: a maths graduate is findable, a teacher who has marked criterion B is not. Families in Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab are typically forty minutes or more from the schools in RAK city, which narrows the realistic in-home pool further still.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects at Higher or Standard Level over two years, with Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service alongside. Mathematics divides into Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation. Which of those a student can take is largely settled by how far their MYP mathematics went, which is why the route placed in MYP 4 or MYP 5 is a Diploma decision in disguise.

RAK families comparing the Diploma against A Levels are often also comparing schools in different emirates, because the local set is small. The maths strand is frequently the deciding factor: a student who has only done standard-route MYP mathematics and then wants Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is starting from behind. Settling that question before Year 11 ends is considerably cheaper than discovering it in the first Diploma term.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led primary learning across transdisciplinary themes, ending with the Exhibition. Mathematics is embedded in units of inquiry rather than timetabled as an isolated subject for much of the programme, so written fluency on arrival in MYP 1 varies widely between students who have had equally good primary experiences.

In Ras Al Khaimah a high proportion of MYP 1 and MYP 2 students have transferred in from Indian or British curriculum primaries in the emirate rather than from a PYP, which produces the opposite problem: strong procedural arithmetic and no experience of being marked on explanation. Those students often lose criterion C marks in their first term simply because nobody has told them that written reasoning is credited.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the specific MYP mathematics requests we receive from Ras Al Khaimah households, listed finely rather than by broad branch, because the choice between a group class and one-to-one usually turns on how narrow the gap actually is.

Simultaneous and linear equations

MYP 3-5

Elimination, substitution and the graphical method, plus setting up equations from a worded situation. The setting-up step is where marks go: students who can solve a given pair often cannot construct one. A narrow, fixable gap, and a good candidate for a group class rather than one-to-one.

Circle theorems and angle reasoning

MYP 3-5

Angle at the centre, angles in the same segment, cyclic quadrilaterals and tangent properties, with the reason named for every step. The reasoning, not the answer, carries the communication marks. This is the clearest example of a topic where a tutor must read written work rather than check results.

Algebraic fractions and manipulation

MYP 4-5, heavier on extended

Simplifying, adding with unlike denominators, solving equations containing fractions and rearranging formulae with the subject on both sides. The most common single reason a student moved onto the extended route mid-year starts to slide. Needs individual attention because the errors are idiosyncratic.

Logarithms and index laws

MYP 5 extended

Negative and fractional indices, laws of logarithms and solving exponential equations. Extended-route content that most RAK students meet for the first time in Year 11, and the topic that most reliably decides whether Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is realistic in the Diploma.

Vectors in two dimensions

MYP 5 extended

Column vectors, magnitude, addition and scalar multiples, and geometric proof using vector paths. Often taught late in the year under time pressure, so it is frequently the gap a student carries into the Diploma. Short and self-contained enough to fix in three or four sessions.

Cumulative frequency and box plots

MYP 3-5

Building a cumulative frequency curve, reading the median and quartiles, constructing and comparing box plots and commenting on spread. Marks are lost in the comparison sentence rather than the drawing, which is a communication problem dressed as a statistics problem.

Probability trees and conditional probability

MYP 4-5

Tree diagrams with and without replacement, and reasoning about dependent events. Students who are fluent elsewhere often stumble here because the method is representational rather than computational. One of the topics where a worked diagnosis in a single session usually settles it.

Modelling and interpretation in context

MYP 4-5, criterion D

Choosing a model, applying it to real data, interpreting the result and stating assumptions and limits. The highest-value skill on the page, because the top criterion D bands require the interpretation sentence that most students omit. Cannot be taught at group pace.

On-screen assessment technique

MYP 5

Working accurately in an on-screen environment, managing time across question types and showing method where the interface allows it. Relevant where a school enters candidates for MYP eAssessment, and a skill distinct from the mathematics itself. Worth four or five focused sessions in the term before entry.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Within the fourth option, one-to-one over live video, there are three shapes a Ras Al Khaimah family usually chooses between. Each suits a different diagnosis, and the first lesson is what decides which.

Weekly one-to-one across a term

A single fixed slot with the same teacher for ten to twelve weeks. The format that changes criterion C and criterion D habits, because those change through repeated correction of the student's own written work rather than through additional content. Also the cheapest route per band of grade movement, since nothing is re-diagnosed each week.

  • One protected weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time
  • Written feedback on one piece of the student's own work weekly
  • A named criterion as the target, agreed in week one
  • Six-week review against the school's own criterion levels

Narrow-gap blocks of three to four sessions

For the cases where the gap is genuinely small and identifiable: vectors, logarithms, probability trees, cumulative frequency comparison. Three or four sessions close the topic and the arrangement ends. Families who would otherwise sign up for a term often need this instead, and saying so is the point of a diagnostic first lesson.

  • Three to four sessions on one named topic
  • Diagnostic first, then teach, then a timed check
  • No standing commitment afterwards
  • Common for extended-route content met late in Year 11

Pre-assessment intensive

Three or four sessions a week for a fortnight before internal assessments, end-of-year examinations or MYP eAssessment entry. The most demanding format on teacher availability and therefore the one to book earliest, because specialist slots thin out across the UAE in the weeks before the May examination period.

  • Three to four sessions weekly for two to three weeks
  • Timed questions every session, marked against criteria
  • Topic gap list produced in the first meeting
  • Booked well ahead; late requests often cannot be matched

01

The four options a Ras Al Khaimah parent is choosing between

Set side by side, the four options stop competing on price and start competing on what they can actually change. That is the comparison worth making, because three of them cost less than one-to-one online teaching and two of them are sometimes the right answer.

School support is the one most families skip and should not. Ask the mathematics teacher directly whether there is a clinic, what it covers and whether your child is already attending. It is free, it follows the exact scheme of work, and in roughly a third of the enquiries we take the honest advice is to exhaust it before paying anyone. Its ceiling is that it is group provision inside a busy week, so it will not read your child's written reasoning line by line.

A tuition centre group class in RAK city is the cheapest paid option, and its real product is routine. For a student who simply is not doing mathematics between lessons, that is a genuine fix. Its limitation is structural rather than a criticism of the teaching: a class covering mixed curricula at a shared pace cannot address an MYP criterion descriptor, and in practice most centres in the northern emirates are staffed for the British and Indian curricula, which dominate enrolment here.

An independent tutor found through a residents' group is the option parents feel best about and verify least. The person may be an excellent teacher. They may also be working without the permit the UAE requires, which is your exposure as much as theirs, and the pool of local candidates who have marked MYP mathematics is very small. The table below puts all four next to each other with market rates attributed to the providers that publish them; the right-hand column is the one to read first.

02

Why MYP specialist supply is genuinely thin in the northern emirates

This is worth stating because it is the fact the rest of the decision rests on, and because no competitor page in this market says it. Across the sixty-plus ranking pages examined for UAE tutoring queries, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain are not mentioned. The pages exist for Dubai and, less often, Abu Dhabi. The market has not built provision here because the addressable population is small.

The teaching population follows the same curve. IB provision in the emirate is concentrated in a small number of schools, so the number of teachers locally who have taught and marked MYP mathematics is correspondingly small, and most of them are employed full time. Abu Dhabi's own professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the UAE private tuition permit carries a code of conduct that addresses the same conflict, so the obvious local candidate is frequently not available to you by design.

What is findable locally is a mathematics graduate, a retired teacher from another curriculum, or an undergraduate at one of the emirate's universities. Any of those can lift arithmetic fluency and drill procedure. None of them, without specific MYP experience, will reliably tell you that your child is capping out in criterion B because the justification is absent rather than wrong, which is the diagnosis that actually moves a grade.

That asymmetry is the whole argument for remote delivery in this emirate, and it is a stronger argument here than in Dubai, where a parent genuinely can find a resident specialist. It also cuts the other way: if the diagnosis turns out to be slow fraction work in MYP 2, a local tutor at a local rate is a perfectly sensible purchase and we will say so. The question the first lesson answers is which of those two situations you are in.

03

Checking whether a tutor is legally permitted to teach here

If you are considering the freelance option, this is the section to use. Private tutoring in the UAE is not an informal activity. A private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the government states that it is granted free of charge for two years. Anyone telling you a permit costs money, or that permits are only for tutoring centres, is wrong on a point of fact.

The eligible categories are broad, which surprises most parents. According to the government's own guidance, applicants may include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. The route is the labour ministry's own service, listed as private tutor licensing, with no fee and a short stated processing time, applied for through the ministry's app, website and e-services system.

The government also states that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts has been published, and press reporting records that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties, so a figure circulating online as an exact penalty should be treated as unverified. The useful point for a parent is simply that the obligation is real and the permit is free, which removes every reasonable excuse for not holding one.

Asking is not rude and it is the one check a parent can run without expertise. The table sets out the categories and what to ask each. Note also that a tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor and needs an educational services permit from the emirate authority. IB Gram holds no such permit and no accreditation from any UAE authority or examination board, and neither does any platform telling you otherwise.

What distinguishes an MYP-trained maths teacher from a maths graduate

  • Four criteria, each marked out of eight, converted by the school into a 1 to 7 grade
  • Criterion A rewards fluency; criteria B, C and D reward written reasoning
  • A term of accurate drilling can leave the report unchanged
  • Ask any tutor to name a criterion from one piece of marked work
  • Criterion levels, not the grade, are the measure of whether anything worked

Because so much of the RAK decision comes down to who is actually available, it is worth being precise about what the MYP-specific skill is. It is not deeper mathematics. The content of MYP mathematics is well within the reach of any competent graduate. The difference is in what gets credited.

MYP mathematics is assessed against four criteria, each marked out of eight: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The school then converts the pattern of criterion levels across the year into the 1 to 7 grade on the report, using boundaries it sets itself. A tutor working from right answers alone is optimising the first criterion and ignoring three.

In practice that produces a specific and very common failure. A student works with a competent tutor for a term, gets quicker and more accurate, and the report does not move. The parent concludes that tutoring does not work. What has actually happened is that criterion A was never the problem: the student was losing marks for unjustified reasoning in criterion B and for answers without interpretation in criterion D, and nobody was looking at those. A tutor who has marked MYP work opens the first session by asking for the criterion levels rather than the grade.

The test you can apply before committing anything is therefore quite simple. Ask a prospective tutor which criterion they think is losing marks and why, having shown them one marked piece of work. A specialist will name one and give a reason tied to the writing on the page. A generalist will talk about topics. Both answers are informative, and one of them is worth two hundred dirhams an hour more than the other.

05

MYP 5, eAssessment and the standard or extended placement

In the final MYP year, two things happen that a Ras Al Khaimah parent should understand before choosing any option above. Mathematics divides into a standard and an extended route, and some schools enter candidates for the IB's on-screen eAssessment while others award the programme on internally assessed work alone. Schools in this emirate differ on the second point, and the school office is the only reliable source for what yours does.

The placement decision is the one with lasting consequences. Extended covers the standard content plus additional material, which usually means logarithms, further index work, harder algebraic fractions, two-dimensional vectors and additional trigonometry depending on the scheme of work. A student who completes the standard route and then takes Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level in the Diploma starts with a real content deficit, not merely a pace adjustment. Given that the Diploma options available locally are limited, that can also become a school-choice question.

If your child is entered for eAssessment, a distinct skill enters the picture: working accurately in an on-screen environment under timed conditions. That is separate from mathematical ability and it is coachable in four or five focused sessions. It is also the one part of the MYP where exam technique behaves like IGCSE exam technique, which widens the pool of tutors who can help with it.

The practical sequence for a RAK family is to establish in September which route the school has placed the child on and whether eAssessment applies, then decide how to spend money. A placement on extended with a shaky algebraic-fractions base is a narrow-gap block of three or four sessions. A student on standard who wants Higher Level Analysis and Approaches later is a term of weekly work. A student who is coping but not writing up their reasoning is a criterion C problem and the cheapest fix on this page.

06

The RAK Department of Knowledge and what it actually approves

Ras Al Khaimah has its own education regulator, and that is unusual among the northern emirates. The UAE government's guidance states that the Department of Knowledge regulates private education in the emirate, while the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah, Dubai has the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Abu Dhabi has the Department of Education and Knowledge and Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority.

The scope is wider than inspection. The same guidance records that the authorities in Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. That is a meaningful detail for a parent: the curriculum your child is taught and the fee you are charged have both passed through an emirate-level approval process, not only a federal one. It is also a fact that no competitor page in this market mentions, which tells you how little attention the northern emirates get.

Alongside whichever international curriculum a school is licensed to teach, the federal baseline applies: private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the ministry's general regulations. For an MYP family this means the timetable is fuller than the IB subject list suggests, and the week has less slack in it than a plan for three tutoring sessions assumes. One protected slot that survives the term is worth more than an ambitious schedule abandoned in week four.

What none of this makes anybody is accredited. IB Gram holds no permit, licence, accreditation or partnership from the Department of Knowledge, the Ministry of Education, the IB organisation or Cambridge, and any tutoring provider implying such a relationship is making a claim worth checking against the authority's own register. What a parent can verify is an individual tutor's permit, the school's own position on eAssessment, and the quality of the marking in a free first lesson.

07

What a term of weekly one-to-one actually produces, week by week

If you choose the fourth option, this is what you are buying, laid out so that you can tell in week six whether it is working rather than hoping it is. The shape below is the one we use for an MYP 4 or MYP 5 student whose grade has slipped a band or two, which is the most common RAK enquiry.

The first fortnight is diagnostic and is where parents often expect too little. By the end of week two there should be a named criterion, a named cause and a rough number of weeks attached. If a tutor has not produced that, more sessions will not produce it either. Weeks three to six are habit weeks: written reasoning, notation, interpretation sentences. These are the weeks where nothing dramatic appears to happen and the grade changes afterwards.

Weeks seven to ten are content weeks, when the specific topic gaps get closed, and this is where extended-route students need the most time. The final fortnight is timed practice against the school's own assessment format. Running that sequence in reverse, which is what happens when a family starts in the fortnight before a report, is the single most common reason tutoring disappoints: timed practice on a student who has not fixed their written reasoning just produces faster unjustified answers.

The evidence column in the table is deliberately concrete, because a parent should be able to check it without understanding the mathematics. A marked piece of work with reasoning written out looks different from one without. If week six arrives and nothing in that column has appeared, the right response is to change the teacher or the plan, not to add a second session.

3-4Written reasoning and notation: making the thinking visible on the pageHomework that shows justified steps rather than answers alone
5-6Interpretation sentences on every answer set in a real-life contextEach context question ends with what it means and what limits it

08

Where tutoring stops and the student's own work begins

Whichever of the four options a RAK family chooses, one rule applies to all of them. IB academic-honesty requirements mean assessed work must be the student's own, and the consequences of a breach fall on the student rather than on whoever supplied the help. That makes the boundary a practical matter rather than a philosophical one.

A tutor may teach the mathematics, work through unrelated examples of the same type, explain what a criterion descriptor is asking for, read a draft the student has written and say where the reasoning is thin or the communication unclear. A tutor may not author any part of a submitted task, supply the generalisation for an investigation, rewrite an explanation, or polish a draft into something the student could not have produced alone. The test a parent can apply after a session is whether their child can explain every line of what will be handed in.

This matters in the UAE market specifically because some providers openly sell completed assessed work, including Diploma internal assessments at four-figure prices. An offer phrased as done-for-you is a reason to stop the conversation, not a service tier. The same boundary applies to the MYP Personal Project in the final year: planning, process and reflection coaching is legitimate; producing the artefact or the report is not.

On the same basis we do not supply IB syllabus documents, past examination material or mark schemes. Those are copyright material properly accessed through your child's school and the official site, and a provider offering you a folder of them is offering something they are not entitled to distribute. It is a small test and a revealing one.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is spread out, and distance is the practical reason the four options above do not weigh the same everywhere in the emirate. These are the communities we are asked about, with what the geography does to each choice.

Al Nakheel

Central and close to the city's school cluster, so the local freelance and centre options are genuinely available here. The group classes advertised in RAK are mostly within reach of Al Nakheel addresses, which makes this the one part of the emirate where comparing all four options is straightforward.

Al Hamra Village

A coastal community roughly half an hour south of the main school cluster, with a high proportion of expatriate families on fixed-term contracts. In-home tutoring quotes carry that drive both ways. Continuity through a contract change is the stated priority for most families here, which favours a teacher who is not tied to the emirate.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront villas and apartments between the city and Al Hamra. Workable for an in-home tutor based in RAK city but not for one coming from Sharjah or Dubai. Families here commonly run two children on consecutive slots, which is simpler to timetable remotely than around a single visiting tutor's route.

Al Marjan Island

Reclaimed island development with limited residential density and no local tutoring provision at all. Every option except live video involves a causeway crossing in both directions, which is why enquiries from here are almost exclusively about remote one-to-one.

Al Dhait

Established residential district popular with teaching and medical families, and one of the few areas where a parent might realistically find a qualified neighbour. Worth asking locally first. Where the gap is criterion B or extended-route content, the local pool usually runs out quickly.

Khuzam

Inland and well connected to the city's schools by the ring road, with a mix of villas and compounds. Evening slots dominate because the school run and the working day finish later than in the city centre. Weekend morning blocks are the most requested windows from Khuzam households.

Al Qusaidat and Seih Al Uraibi

Older residential areas closer to the city, where group classes at a local centre are the most common paid option and the cheapest. Suitable where the need is routine and discipline rather than a specific criterion. Less suitable for an extended-route student with a content gap.

Julphar and the corniche

Apartment living near the older commercial core, with families frequently new to the emirate and unfamiliar with the local provision. The first question from this area is usually what the school already offers for free, and it is the right question to ask before paying for anything.

School ecosystem

Ras Al Khaimah city and Al Nakheel

The emirate's private schools are clustered within a short radius of the city, covering British, Indian and IB provision, all under the Department of Knowledge. Students we support attend schools across this group, and the mathematics requests concentrate in MYP 4 and MYP 5 where the extended route and the Diploma decision land together.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Ask the school first

Before paying anyone, ask your child's mathematics teacher what catch-up provision exists, what it covers and whether your child is attending. It is free and scheme-aligned, and in a meaningful share of enquiries it is enough on its own. Where it is not, you at least arrive at the next conversation knowing what has already been tried.

  2. 02

Send marked work and the criterion levels

Send one recent marked MYP maths task and the latest report showing criterion levels rather than only the grade. Fifteen minutes of reading real work replaces a fortnight of guessing, and it is what lets the first lesson be diagnostic instead of introductory.

Free trial lesson with a named outcome

A full one-to-one lesson over live video at no charge, with no card details taken. The output to expect is a named criterion, a named cause and a rough number of weeks. If the honest answer is that a group class or the school clinic would fix this, we will tell you that instead.

  4. 04

Choose the shape, not just the tutor

A narrow topic gap is three or four sessions and then nothing. A habit problem in written reasoning is a term of weekly work. An assessment a fortnight away is an intensive. Picking the wrong shape is the most common way families overspend, and the diagnosis is what decides it.

  5. 05

Check the evidence at six weeks

Compare the school's own criterion levels before and after, not a tutor's report on progress. If one criterion has moved and another has not, the plan changes. If nothing has moved in six weeks of weekly work, the teacher changes rather than the hours increasing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The comparison includes what we do not sell

School clinics, centre group classes and local freelance tutoring are all on this page with their genuine advantages, because a parent cannot make a decision from a page that only describes one option. Where another option is the better fit, the first lesson is where you will hear that.

Access, not proximity

The binding constraint in Ras Al Khaimah is the number of resident teachers who have marked MYP mathematics, which is small. Remote one-to-one changes the pool rather than the price of the drive, and that matters more here than in Dubai where a resident specialist is genuinely findable.

Permit facts you can verify yourself

The private tuition permit position is set out with the resolution that created it and the fact that it is free for two years, so you can check any tutor including ours. We claim no accreditation from any UAE authority or examination board, because we hold none.

Criterion-level diagnosis in the first lesson

The first session produces a named criterion and a named cause from marked work, not a general impression. That is what makes a six-week review possible, and it is why a term of accurate drilling that leaves the report unchanged should not happen twice.

Rates quoted with their source and date

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, with the month it was read. Several competitor pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, which is not the currency a RAK family transacts in.

Availability stated plainly

If no MYP mathematics specialist is free at your slot, we say so at the trial stage rather than filling the hour. That disclosure is uncommon in this market and it is cheaper for you than discovering a mismatch in week three.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

Which is the better first move in Ras Al Khaimah: the school's own catch-up, a group class, or a private tutor?+

Start with the school, because it is free and follows the exact scheme of work your child is being taught. Ask the mathematics teacher what clinic provision exists and whether your child is attending it. If the problem is that your child does no mathematics between lessons, a group class at a local centre is the cheapest fix and the routine is the product. Move to one-to-one when the problem is specific: a named criterion losing marks, an extended-route content gap, or written reasoning that is thought but never recorded. Those three cannot be fixed at group pace, which is the only real dividing line between the options.

Why are there so few MYP maths tutors actually living in Ras Al Khaimah?+

Because IB provision in the emirate is concentrated in a very small number of schools, so the population of teachers who have taught and marked MYP mathematics here is small, and most of them are employed full time. There is a second constraint: the UAE private tuition permit carries a code of conduct addressing conflicts of interest, and Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid tutoring of students at their own school, so the obvious local candidate is often unavailable by design. What is findable locally is a maths graduate or an undergraduate, which helps with fluency and drill but not with criterion-level diagnosis.

Does a group class at a tuition centre in RAK work for MYP mathematics?+

For some problems, yes. If your child is simply not practising between school lessons, a weekly class imposes the routine and that is often the whole issue. It is also the cheapest paid option, with market group rates running roughly AED 45-150 per student per hour. What it cannot do is address an MYP criterion descriptor, because that requires someone reading one student's written reasoning every week. Most centres in the northern emirates are staffed for the British and Indian curricula, which dominate local enrolment, so ask directly whether anyone there has marked MYP work before paying for a term.

How do I check that a freelance tutor in Ras Al Khaimah is allowed to teach privately?+

Ask to see their private tuition work permit. The UAE introduced it under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and the government states it is granted free of charge for two years, so there is no cost reason for a tutor not to hold one. Eligible categories are broad and include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The government also states that tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no schedule of amounts has been published. A tutoring centre with premises needs a separate permit from the emirate authority.

What exactly does an MYP-trained maths teacher do that a maths graduate does not?+

They mark against the four criteria rather than against right answers. MYP mathematics is assessed on knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts, each marked out of eight, and the school converts that pattern into the 1 to 7 grade on the report. A graduate tutor optimises the first criterion. The failure that produces is specific and common: a term of accurate work, a faster student, and a report that has not moved, because the losses were in unjustified reasoning and uninterpreted answers. Ask any prospective tutor to name a criterion from one marked piece of work.

Does my child's school in Ras Al Khaimah enter students for MYP eAssessment?+

Schools differ, and the school office is the only reliable source. Some IB schools enter final-year MYP candidates for on-screen examinations and ePortfolios, while others award the programme on internally assessed work alone. The answer changes what is worth paying for. If your child is entered, on-screen assessment technique becomes a distinct coachable skill: working accurately in the interface, managing time across question types and showing method where the format allows. That is usually four or five focused sessions and it behaves much more like IGCSE examination technique than like the rest of the MYP, which widens the pool of tutors who can help with it.

My daughter has been put on extended mathematics in MYP 5 and is struggling. Is that the wrong route?+

Not necessarily, and the answer depends on which part is hard. Extended adds content to the standard route, commonly logarithms, further indices, harder algebraic fractions, two-dimensional vectors and extra trigonometry, so a student who is coping conceptually but drowning in algebraic fractions has a narrow, fixable gap rather than a wrong placement. A student who is losing marks across all four criteria is a different case. The question to settle is where she is heading: if Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is the destination, extended is close to a practical prerequisite, and dropping to standard now buys relief this year at a cost in two.

We are in Al Hamra Village on a two-year contract. What happens to continuity if we move?+

This is the most common reason families here choose remote teaching over a local tutor, and it is a sound reason. A tutor who drives to your villa in Al Hamra is specific to that address; a teacher working over live video is not tied to the emirate or the country, so a mid-contract relocation does not restart the relationship. For an MYP student that matters more than it sounds, because the criterion C and criterion D habits that take six weeks to change are exactly what gets lost when a tutor is replaced. If you expect to move, say so at the trial stage so the match accounts for the time zone you are heading to.

Who regulates private schools in Ras Al Khaimah, and what does the regulator control?+

Ras Al Khaimah has its own Department of Knowledge, which regulates private education in the emirate. Its remit is broader than inspection: the UAE government records that the Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah authorities approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Elsewhere the picture differs, with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, the Department of Education and Knowledge in Abu Dhabi, and the federal Ministry of Education supervising Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. None of this makes any tutoring provider accredited; IB Gram holds no permit or relationship with the Department of Knowledge or any examination board.

How will I know after six weeks whether the tutoring is actually working?+

Use the school's own criterion levels, not the tutor's report. Six weeks is long enough for written reasoning habits to change and short enough to act if they have not. The concrete evidence is visible without understanding the mathematics: homework that shows justified steps rather than bare answers, and context questions that end with a sentence on what the answer means and what limits it. If a criterion level has moved, continue. If one has moved and another has not, change the plan. If nothing has moved in six weeks of weekly work, change the teacher rather than adding a second session.

Is one session a week enough, or should we book two from the start?+

One well-placed weekly session with work done in between moves more than two sessions with nothing between them, and that holds for most MYP cases. The losses at this stage are usually habits rather than content gaps, and habits change through repeated correction of the student's own written work, not through extra contact hours. Two or three sessions a week make sense in two situations: an internal assessment or eAssessment entry a fortnight away, or a student placed on the extended route mid-year with genuine content to cover. Outside those, the second weekly session usually buys reassurance for the parent rather than progress for the student.

Can a tutor help with the MYP Personal Project in the final year?+

With the process, yes; with the product, no. Planning, setting criteria for success, structuring the process journal, managing the timeline and reflecting on what happened are all legitimate coaching, and students genuinely benefit from someone asking hard questions early. What a tutor must not do is author any part of the report, produce the artefact, or edit a draft into something the student could not have written alone. IB academic-honesty rules require the work to be the student's own, and the consequence of a breach falls on the student. Any offer phrased as done-for-you should end the conversation rather than start a negotiation.

What does the first lesson cost if we decide not to continue?+

Nothing, and no card details are taken beforehand. The trial is a full one-to-one lesson over live video, and its purpose is to produce something you can use with or without us: a named MYP criterion, the cause behind it, and a rough number of weeks. If the honest conclusion is that the school's own clinic or a local group class would fix this, you will hear that in the first lesson. If we do not have a suitable MYP mathematics specialist free at your preferred slot, you will hear that too, rather than being matched with whoever is available.

Can sessions be arranged around a long school run and the RAK working day?+

Yes, and it is worth planning around the bus rather than the bell. Children travelling from Al Hamra, Al Marjan Island or Mina Al Arab to the city school cluster are often not home before four, and the first hour afterwards is the worst time to attempt investigation work. Slots that survive a full term are usually later weekday evenings or a longer weekend morning block, and weekend mornings are the most requested windows from this emirate. During Ramadan, school hours shorten and the productive part of the day moves, so most families switch to a late-morning or post-iftar slot agreed a fortnight ahead.

Are there IB MYP mathematics tutors available for students outside Ras Al Khaimah city?+

Yes, because delivery does not depend on geography inside the emirate. Al Marjan Island, Al Hamra Village and Mina Al Arab have little or no local tutoring provision, and every option other than live video involves a drive in both directions that ends up in the hourly rate. Remote one-to-one prices the same for an Al Dhait family as for an Al Marjan Island family, since no travel is being bought. The practical requirements are a stable connection, a quiet room and a parent who protects the slot in the calendar, which is a smaller ask than it sounds but not a trivial one.

Compare the four, then book the free lesson

If you are weighing an IB MYP mathematics tutor in Ras Al Khaimah against the school's own catch-up, a group class in the city or a local freelancer, the cheapest useful step is to ask the school first and then send us one marked piece of work. The free trial lesson is a full one-to-one session over live video with no card details taken, and what it should produce is a named criterion, a named cause and a rough number of weeks. If a group class or the school clinic is the better answer for your child, that is what you will be told, and you will have lost nothing by asking.
