Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 Tutor in Ras Al Khaimah

Most families looking for a Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 tutor in Ras Al Khaimah are working to a date. The paper is a known number of weeks away, the current mark is known, and the question is whether the gap between them can be closed in the time left. This page answers that as a timeline: where a student usually is, what has to happen each week, and what a parent should be able to see by week six. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

  • 0620 theory paper carries 50%, multiple choice 30%, practical 20%
  • A twelve-week plan counted backwards from the paper, week by week
  • Marked evidence due at week two, week six and week ten
  • Moles, electrolysis and organic chemistry sequenced by mark value

Where your child is now, where 0620 needs them to be, and the weeks in between

A chemistry plan written without a date on it is not a plan. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 is assessed by three components: a multiple-choice paper worth 30 per cent, a theory paper worth 50 per cent, and either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper worth 20 per cent. Core candidates are graded C to G, Extended candidates A* to E, and the syllabus covers twelve topic areas from states of matter through to experimental techniques and chemical analysis. Confirm the exact paper numbers, durations and mark totals for your child's series on the Cambridge International site, because the detail is revised periodically.

What a timeline changes is the order of work. Left to itself a revision plan follows the syllabus, which means a student spends week one on states of matter — a topic they probably already score well on — and reaches organic chemistry in week ten with four weeks left. Working backwards from the paper reverses that: the topics that are costing the most marks are addressed first, the practical component is scheduled rather than assumed, and the final fortnight is reserved for timed papers instead of new content. The sequence matters more than the hours.

The honest starting point is a marked paper and a date. From those two things a specialist can say roughly what is achievable, and the answer is sometimes less than a parent hoped. A student twelve weeks out who is losing marks across moles, electrolysis and organic chemistry is not going to cover all three to depth and also practise timed papers; something has to be chosen, and it should be chosen on mark value rather than on which topic feels most alarming. A tutor who will not have that conversation in the first week is selling optimism.

Ras Al Khaimah adds one specific constraint to the timeline, and it is distance rather than anything academic. The emirate's private schools cluster around Al Nakheel, Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab, and families in the southern communities or in the outlying towns — Al Rams, Digdaga, Khatt — face drives long enough that a weekday in-home session consumes the evening twice over. When twelve weeks is the whole budget, losing two hours a week to a car is not a minor inefficiency. Remote sessions put that time back into the plan.

On cost, the useful figure for a deadline-driven family is the total rather than the rate. At the published UAE bands — AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor, with Unitors quoting AED 150 for IGCSE, and AED 200 to AED 450 and above for an examined-subject specialist, with TutorChase at AED 270 — a twelve-week block at two sessions a week runs to roughly AED 3,600 to AED 10,800. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 specialist exam-year monthly estimate of AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above lands in the same territory over three months. Those are the providers' and survey's own published numbers. IB Gram quotes after the free trial lesson, and delivers 0620 as one-to-one tuition over live video; we do not visit homes in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Where a 0620 student is heading changes how hard the Extended content needs to be pushed, and in Ras Al Khaimah the local post-16 options are limited enough that the decision is worth making before the final term rather than after results.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620)

Two years, two tiers, three assessed components. The multiple-choice paper rewards breadth and quick recall; the theory paper rewards precise explanation and correct calculation; the practical component rewards familiarity with apparatus, method and sources of error. Students who prepare only for the theory paper routinely lose most of the available practical marks, which are worth a fifth of the grade on their own.

RAK schools generally run a single chemistry pathway per year group, so the tier is largely settled by the school and is hard to move in Year 11. For a family working to a deadline that is actually clarifying: the question becomes how to maximise the entered tier rather than whether to change it, and the plan can be built accordingly.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level Chemistry (9701)

Requires Extended 0620 in practice and a strong grade at most centres. AS assumes fluent mole calculation from the first week and builds immediately into energetics, equilibria and reaction kinetics. The practical assessment is more demanding and more heavily weighted, so a student who skipped practical preparation at IGCSE meets it again with interest.

Sixth-form science provision in the northern emirates sits in a small number of schools, so continuing may involve an application beyond Ras Al Khaimah. That makes the Year 11 predicted grade an admissions document, which is a reason to build marked evidence in the autumn rather than hope for a strong series.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Chemistry

Taken at SL or HL, with examination papers plus an internal assessment: an individual scientific investigation designed, carried out and written up by the student against published criteria. The chemistry content overlaps considerably with Extended 0620. The investigation does not resemble anything at IGCSE, and students underestimate the planning and evaluation marks every year.

Diploma provision in this emirate is limited, so students taking this route are often changing school at 16. Where we support a Diploma investigation, the design, the data and the writing are the student's own throughout: a tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback, and will not produce any part of assessed work.

Cambridge IGCSE Combined and Co-ordinated Sciences

The alternative route where chemistry is examined alongside biology and physics in a single qualification rather than separately. Content coverage per subject is narrower, and the grade reflects performance across all three. It suits students who need science breadth without three separate terminal science papers in one series.

Several northern-emirate schools use a combined-science route for part of the cohort, which matters for a timeline plan: a student on that route needs a different sequence from a 0620 candidate, and the first question any tutor should ask is which qualification the school has actually entered them for.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry does not sit alone in a Year 11 timetable, and a twelve-week plan has to account for what else is competing for the same evenings. These notes say what each neighbouring subject assesses and where it helps or collides with 0620 revision.

Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

This page's subject. Three components: multiple choice at 30 per cent, theory at 50 per cent, practical or alternative-to-practical at 20 per cent. Moles, electrolysis and organic chemistry account for most of the lost marks at Extended level.

Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

Shares 0620's three-component structure including a practical or alternative paper worth a fifth of the grade. Far more definition-heavy, so it competes for memorisation time rather than for calculation practice.

Physics (0625)

Core and Extended

The third science with the same assessment shape. Its algebraic demand is higher than chemistry's, so a student weak in rearranging formulae loses marks in both subjects for a single underlying reason.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Two equally weighted papers per tier, one without a calculator. Ratio, proportion and standard form are the foundation of mole calculation, so chemistry marks are regularly lost to maths weakness rather than to chemistry gaps.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Cambridge IGCSE, post-Extended

Taken alongside Extended 0580 by stronger mathematicians. Irrelevant to 0620 content but a significant competitor for revision time in the final term, since it is examined in Year 11 only.

Combined and Co-ordinated Sciences

Core and Extended

The alternative route where the three sciences are examined together. A student on this route needs a different revision sequence from a 0620 candidate, so the entered qualification must be confirmed before any plan is written.

Computer Science (0478)

Single tier, Cambridge IGCSE

Two equally weighted written papers covering computer systems, then algorithms, programming and logic. No practical component, so it offers no relief but also no additional lab preparation.

English as a Second Language (0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

Matters in chemistry more than students expect. Explanation questions are marked on precision of wording, and an answer that conveys the right idea imprecisely does not meet the scheme's requirement.

Geography (0460)

Single tier, Cambridge IGCSE

Overlaps with 0620's chemistry-of-the-environment topic on pollution, atmospheric gases and resource use. The data-interpretation skill transfers to reading practical results tables.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns suit 0620 and the choice is driven entirely by how many weeks are left. All run one-to-one over live video with a shared screen for diagrams, equations and results tables, and all start with a free trial lesson.

Twelve-week countdown, two sessions a week

The format for a Year 11 student inside a term of the paper. Topics are sequenced by current mark loss rather than by syllabus order, the practical component is timetabled rather than assumed, and the final fortnight is reserved for timed papers. Evidence checkpoints fall at weeks two, six and ten so the plan can change while there is still time.

  • Sessions sequenced by mark value, highest cost first
  • One full theory paper marked against the published scheme each month
  • Practical or alternative-paper technique scheduled, not left to chance
  • A fixed end date tied to the entered series

Single-topic repair block, three to five sessions

For a student whose overall position is reasonable and who is losing a cluster of marks in one named area — usually moles and stoichiometry, electrolysis, or organic reaction pathways. Short, finite, and built on past questions from that topic only, with a timed set at the end of each session.

  • One named topic agreed from a marked paper, not from a guess
  • Three to five sessions with a stated finish date
  • Past-paper questions only; no teaching from a textbook
  • A short timed set at the end of every session

Year-long plan from the start of Year 10

The cheapest route per mark, because the twelve topic areas arrive at the pace the school teaches them and nothing has to be rebuilt under pressure. One session a week, with the practical component covered as the lab work happens rather than revisited from memory a year later.

  • One weekly session following the school's own sequence
  • Mole calculation established early, before it compounds
  • Practical technique recorded while the lab work is fresh
  • Termly written review against all three assessed components

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ras Al Khaimah

01

Twelve weeks before the 0620 paper, counted backwards

A deadline plan is written from the end. Twelve weeks is the most common starting point because it is roughly a term, and because it is the point at which a set of mocks has just told a family something uncomfortable. The structure below allocates those weeks by function rather than by topic: diagnosis, highest-value content, the practical component, then timed papers with nothing new introduced. A student who reaches the last fortnight still learning content will sit the paper without ever having completed one under time pressure, which is the single most avoidable failure in science revision.

The first two weeks are diagnosis and the largest single mark loss. Diagnosis means a full marked paper, not a conversation: the script shows which of the twelve topic areas is costing most, whether the multiple-choice paper or the theory paper is weaker, and whether calculation or explanation is the problem. The largest loss at Extended level is usually moles and stoichiometry, because every subsequent calculation topic depends on it, so it is addressed first regardless of where it sits in the syllabus.

Weeks three to eight are content, in descending order of cost. Weeks nine and ten bring in the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, which is worth a fifth of the grade and which students consistently leave untouched. The final two weeks are timed papers and corrections only. By then the aim is not improvement but reliability: the same student performing at the same level under exam conditions as they do at home, which is a separate skill and one that only practice produces.

Where there are fewer than twelve weeks, the structure compresses from the middle rather than the ends. Diagnosis still happens and timed papers still happen; the content phase shortens and the sequencing becomes more ruthless. A family six weeks out should expect to be told that two topics will be fixed properly and a third will not, and that choosing is better than attempting all three badly.

Paper 5 or Paper 6: the practical decision made for your child

A fifth of the 0620 grade comes from a practical component, and it exists in two forms: a practical test carried out with apparatus, or an alternative-to-practical written paper about experimental work. Which one a candidate sits is decided by the school and its centre arrangements, not by the student or the family. The first question in any timeline plan is therefore which of the two has been entered, and a surprising number of parents do not know the answer twelve weeks out.

It matters because the preparation differs. The practical test rewards familiarity with apparatus, with reading a burette or a thermometer correctly, with following a method under time pressure and recording results in the moment. The alternative paper rewards the ability to describe method, identify variables, spot sources of error, interpret a results table and draw conclusions from data — all in writing, without touching anything. Both are learnable. Neither is learnable by revising theory.

The common failure is identical for both: students assume the practical component will look after itself because they have done lab work at school, and they allocate none of their revision to it. Twenty per cent of a grade then arrives from a component they have never practised as an exam. In a twelve-week plan the practical work is explicitly scheduled, usually at weeks four and three, because it is the highest-return block available to a student who has ignored it and because it needs less time than a content topic.

For families in Ras Al Khaimah one practical question recurs, so it is worth answering plainly: a student does not need a home laboratory. Where the alternative paper has been entered, no apparatus is required at all. Where the practical test has been entered, the apparatus work happens at school, and what private tuition adds is method discipline, recording conventions, error analysis and the reading of scales — all of which transfer perfectly over a shared screen using the school's own practical sheets and past questions.

03

The three topics that decide a 0620 grade

Across marked Extended chemistry scripts the same three areas account for most of the loss, and they are not evenly difficult. Moles and stoichiometry come first, not because the arithmetic is hard but because everything downstream depends on it: concentration, yield, limiting reagents, titration calculation and gas volumes all collapse if the mole concept is shaky. A student who cannot move confidently between mass, moles and particles is losing marks in four or five separate places on the paper for one reason.

Electrolysis is second, and the failure there is conceptual rather than computational. Students memorise the products of specific electrolyses and are then asked about an unfamiliar electrolyte, where the reasoning — which ion is attracted where, which is discharged in preference, what happens at each electrode and why — has to be reconstructed rather than recalled. Half-equations are the usual sticking point, and they are learnable in two sessions once the pattern is explicit instead of implicit.

Organic chemistry is third and is the most over-feared. It looks like memorisation and is actually pattern recognition: homologous series behave consistently, functional groups react predictably, and the reaction pathways form a small map that can be drawn on one page. Students who try to learn organic chemistry as a list of facts find it enormous. Students who learn the map find it among the more tractable parts of the syllabus, and that reframing is often a single session's work.

What should not be on this list is the rest of the syllabus. States of matter, atomic structure, the Periodic Table and chemistry of the environment are generally well scored, and spending a deadline-constrained plan on them because they appear early in the contents list is how twelve weeks gets wasted. The sequencing rule is simple: fix what is costing marks, in order of how much it is costing, and verify with a second marked paper at the halfway point.

04

Switching from Core to Extended chemistry, and what it costs in weeks

Occasionally a strong Core candidate wants to move up, usually because a post-16 science route has come into view. It is a legitimate ambition and the honest answer is that it costs weeks rather than willpower. The Extended tier covers the same twelve topic areas with additional supplement content, and that supplement is where A and A* separate: deeper stoichiometry, more demanding electrolysis, redox in terms of electron transfer, additional organic chemistry and more quantitative work throughout.

In Ras Al Khaimah the practical constraint is the school rather than the content. With one chemistry pathway per year group, moving a student between tiers in Year 11 means asking a teacher to deliver supplement content to a single student outside lesson time, and most schools in this emirate will say honestly that they cannot. So the switch, where it happens, is largely carried privately, and a family should know the size of that commitment before starting rather than discovering it in week five.

The table below gives working estimates for each supplement area, assuming the Core content underneath is already secure and the student does the between-session work. They are estimates, not promises. The decision point is the entry deadline, which falls months before the paper. A Ras Al Khaimah candidate sits either the June series or the November series, and for June the papers run from May into June while the final entry closes in the spring, well before them. That puts the Core-or-Extended conversation in the autumn and winter terms, with the school and supported by marked evidence, rather than in the weeks before the first paper when the tier has already been submitted on the entry. Cambridge's February and March sitting is offered in India only, so its deadlines do not apply to a RAK student; the date that binds you is the one printed on your centre's statement of entry.

What a twelve-week block costs as a total, not as an hourly rate

Families working to a deadline want the total, so here is the arithmetic rather than a rate card. The published UAE bands are AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor, with Unitors quoting AED 150 as its IGCSE starting rate, and AED 200 to AED 450 an hour and above for an examined-subject specialist, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table giving the 200 to 450-plus band. At the cheap end of the market, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52; at the named-premium end, BartyED quotes AED 650.

Multiply those by the shape of the plan and the totals are easy to check. Twelve weeks at one session a week is twelve hours. Twelve weeks at two sessions a week is twenty-four. A three-to-five session topic block is what it says. The table below runs those numbers across the qualified and specialist bands so a family can see the range before anybody quotes them anything, and so they can hold another provider's quote against the same published figures. Nothing here is an IB Gram price; our figure is quoted after the free trial lesson.

One comparison worth making. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. Over a three-month countdown the specialist monthly band and the twenty-four-hour calculation land in roughly the same territory, which is a useful cross-check: if a quote sits far outside both, ask what the extra is buying. And nobody should be quoting a price against a promised grade, because no tutor can promise one.

The first six weeks: what a parent should actually be able to see

Chemistry is not a subject most parents can assess directly, which makes it one of the easiest to be sold badly. The protection is not expertise but evidence, and the evidence should be specified before the first session rather than requested later when something feels wrong. Three checkpoints across the first six weeks are enough, and each one produces an artefact a parent can look at without understanding the chemistry inside it.

Week two produces a marked full paper with topic-level scores. Not a comment, not an assessment summary — a script with marks on it and a table showing how many marks were lost in each of the twelve topic areas. That document is the basis of the whole plan, and if it does not exist by week two the plan does not exist either. Week four produces marked homework on the first repaired topic, with a short timed set showing whether the repair held under pressure.

Week six produces a second full marked paper, and this is the checkpoint that matters. Compared against week two it shows movement or it does not. Movement in the targeted topics with the rest flat is exactly right. Movement everywhere is unlikely and worth a sceptical question. No movement anywhere after six sessions means the plan is wrong, and the honest response is to change the focus, change the tutor, or tell the family that the timeline is shorter than the ambition. The table sets out the checkpoints so they can be agreed up front.

07

How a Ras Al Khaimah student practises chemistry they cannot run at home

The reasonable objection to online science tutoring is the laboratory, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a reassurance. A student cannot electrolyse copper sulphate over a video call, and nobody should claim otherwise. What they can do, and what the examination actually assesses, is a set of skills that are entirely paper-based: describing a method precisely enough for somebody else to follow, identifying independent and dependent variables, naming sources of error and saying how each would be reduced, reading scales to the correct precision, tabulating results with units and appropriate decimal places, and drawing a conclusion that the data actually supports.

Every one of those is examined in writing, in both practical forms, and every one of them transfers to a shared screen without loss. The sessions use the student's own school practical sheets where they exist and past questions where they do not, and the work is the student's writing being corrected rather than a demonstration being watched. For the alternative-to-practical paper this is the whole of the preparation. For the practical test it is the half that school lab time does not reliably cover, because a school lesson optimises for completing the experiment rather than for exam technique.

There is also a specific Ras Al Khaimah argument here, and it is about who is available rather than about format. The emirate's specialist teaching pool is small, and chemistry at Extended level with a practical component is a genuinely specialist job. Searching within driving distance of Al Hamra Village or Digdaga returns very few people. Searching for someone who has marked 0620 papers returns a national pool. In a twelve-week plan, getting the right specialist in week one matters considerably more than how far away they live.

08

Starting a 0620 countdown, and the honest availability answer

Two things start a timeline plan: the date of the paper and a photograph of the last marked chemistry script. Send those with the school and the year group, and a 0620 specialist will come back with the topic sequence, the number of sessions, and a direct answer about what is achievable in the weeks available. That answer is sometimes narrower than a parent hoped, and it is better delivered in week one than discovered in week nine. A free trial lesson with the same tutor follows, at no charge.

Scheduling takes the Ras Al Khaimah geography seriously. Families in Mina Al Arab, Al Hamra Village and Al Marjan Island realistically start on a weekday at 7.30pm or later; Al Nakheel, Al Dhait and Khuzam can often manage earlier. Sessions are 60 minutes by default and 90 where a full timed paper is the point of the session. Rescheduling with reasonable notice is free, and during school mock weeks the plan pauses deliberately rather than competing with the school's own assessment schedule.

The availability disclosure matters more in the final term than at any other point in the year. Chemistry specialists at Extended level are in heaviest demand in the eight weeks before a main series, which is exactly when most families start looking. When nobody suitable is free at your hour we say so, and offer a different time with the specialist you asked for, an available tutor whose 0620 experience is described precisely enough to judge, or a dated place on the list. We will not put a general science tutor into a twelve-week Extended chemistry countdown and describe them as a specialist, because with twelve weeks on the clock there is no time to recover from that.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Ras Al Khaimah

In a twelve-week plan, travel time is budget. These notes record what the drive actually does to a weekday session from each part of Ras Al Khaimah, and which areas have no realistic local option at all.

Al Nakheel

Central and close to the city's schools, with the shortest school run in the emirate. One of the few areas where a 5pm weekday session is genuinely achievable during term.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront housing south of the centre with no tuition centre within a short drive. A round trip into town at session times costs more than the lesson, which is why remote delivery dominates here.

Al Hamra Village

A gated community well south of the city. For a twelve-week plan the two hours a week lost to driving is roughly three full sessions of teaching, which is not a rounding error.

Al Marjan Island

Reclaimed islands with a largely expatriate population and a mainland crossing on every school run. Evening traffic pushes realistic weekday starts past 7.30pm.

Al Dhait and Al Qusaidat

Established inland districts nearer the older school campuses. Weekday afternoon slots are more achievable here than anywhere on the southern coast.

Khuzam and Seih Al Uraibi

Residential areas adjacent to school campuses, which makes short-notice rescheduling easier. Weekend morning slots go early and are hard to recover in the final term.

Al Rams, Digdaga and Khatt

Outlying towns and agricultural districts where a specialist in-home option effectively does not exist. For these households the choice is remote one-to-one or no specialist at all.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah city and Khuzam

The emirate's larger private schools sit close to the city and cover British, Indian and IB provision. Chemistry is taught in single sets in most year groups, so the practical component depends heavily on one teacher's lab scheduling and on how early in the course the apparatus work is covered.

Provision south of the city serves Al Hamra Village, Mina Al Arab and Al Marjan Island. These are the households for whom a twelve-week plan has to be built without any travel in it, because the drives would otherwise consume a quarter of the available time.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the date and the marked script

The paper date, the school, the year group and a photograph of the last marked chemistry paper. Those two things are enough for a specialist to sequence the twelve topic areas by mark value and to say what is realistic in the weeks remaining.

  2. 02

Get the honest timeline answer first

Before any money is discussed you are told what the available weeks can and cannot cover. A six-week plan that fixes two topics properly beats a six-week plan that touches four, and the choice should be made deliberately in week one.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the same tutor

Sixty minutes with the 0620 specialist who would run the countdown, working on questions from the marked script rather than a generic diagnostic. Nothing is paid until after that lesson has happened.

  4. 04

    Agree the three evidence checkpoints

A marked paper at week two, marked homework with a timed set at week four, and a second marked paper at week six. Agreeing these up front is what lets a parent judge progress in a subject they cannot assess themselves.

  5. 05

    Schedule the practical component explicitly

The practical or alternative paper is worth a fifth of the grade and is the component students ignore. It is timetabled into the plan at weeks four and three rather than left to whatever time remains at the end.

  6. 06

Reserve the last fortnight for timed papers

No new content inside two weeks of the paper. The final sessions are full papers under exam conditions with corrections written by the student, because reliability under pressure is a separate skill from knowing the chemistry.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The plan is built from the date backwards

Topics are sequenced by how many marks each is currently costing, not by syllabus order. That one change is why a twelve-week countdown produces movement where a term of general revision often does not.

Three checkpoints a parent can read

A marked paper at week two, a timed set at week four, a second marked paper at week six. You do not need to understand stoichiometry to see whether the targeted topics moved, which is the point of specifying the evidence in advance.

The practical component is scheduled, not assumed

A fifth of the grade comes from the practical or alternative paper and most students allocate it no revision at all. It is the highest-return block available to them and it is written into the plan.

Travel time counted as part of the budget

From Al Hamra Village or Mina Al Arab, a weekday in-home session costs around two hours of driving a week — roughly three sessions of teaching across a twelve-week plan. Remote delivery puts that time back into the chemistry.

Figures you can reproduce

Every AED band on this page names the provider or survey that published it, and the block totals are simple multiplication you can check. Three of six competitor pages reviewed in October 2026 published no price at all.

No promised outcome, in writing or otherwise

Nobody here will attach a grade to a fee. The honest product is a sequence, marked evidence and a visible trend, and a provider offering a specific score in exchange for a block should be read with real scepticism.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ras Al Khaimah: your questions answered

We are twelve weeks from the chemistry exam. Is it too late to start 0620 support?+

Twelve weeks is a workable countdown and it is the most common starting point. What it rules out is covering everything. The plan sequences the twelve topic areas by how many marks each is currently costing, repairs the two or three most expensive, schedules the practical component, and reserves the final fortnight for timed papers with no new content. A specialist should tell you in week one what those weeks can realistically cover, and that answer is sometimes narrower than you hoped. With six weeks rather than twelve the same structure applies, with fewer topics chosen deliberately rather than four attempted badly.

What is the difference between 0620 Paper 5 and Paper 6?+

One is a practical test carried out with apparatus; the other is an alternative-to-practical written paper about experimental work. Both are worth a fifth of the 0620 grade and the school decides which its candidates sit, based on its centre arrangements. The preparation differs: the practical test rewards method discipline, accurate reading of scales and real-time recording, while the alternative paper rewards describing method, identifying variables, naming sources of error and interpreting results tables. Confirm which one your child has been entered for with the exams officer, because a surprising number of families do not know twelve weeks out.

Which 0620 topics should a Year 11 student fix first?+

Whichever is costing the most marks, which a marked paper tells you in ten minutes. At Extended level the usual answer is moles and stoichiometry, because concentration, yield, limiting reagents, titration calculation and gas volumes all depend on it, so one weakness shows up in four or five places on the paper. Electrolysis usually comes second and organic chemistry third. What should not come first is states of matter or atomic structure, which most students already score well on and which only appear early because of where they sit in the contents list.

How long does it take to learn moles properly?+

Four to six sessions for most students, with short daily practice in between, assuming ratio and proportion from mathematics are already secure. The reason it takes that long is not conceptual difficulty but breadth of application: the same idea has to work for mass, particles, gas volumes, solution concentration, titration and percentage yield, and students typically understand it in one context and not the others. The test of whether it has landed is a mixed set of calculation questions in random order. Handling those confidently is what recovers marks across the rest of the paper.

Can my child do 0620 practical work from home in Ras Al Khaimah?+

No home laboratory is needed and nobody should suggest otherwise. If the alternative-to-practical paper has been entered, no apparatus is required at all: the paper assesses describing method, identifying variables, naming sources of error, reading scales, tabulating results and drawing supported conclusions, all in writing. If the practical test has been entered, the apparatus work happens at school and private sessions add the exam technique that school lab time does not reliably cover, because a lesson optimises for completing the experiment rather than for examination conditions. Both forms of preparation transfer to a shared screen without loss.

How many weeks does a Core to Extended switch in chemistry take?+

Expect it to be carried largely privately and to cost a real block of weeks. The Extended tier covers the same twelve topic areas plus supplement content: deeper stoichiometry, half-equations and preferential discharge in electrolysis, redox as electron transfer, additional organic pathways and more quantitative work throughout. On working estimates that is four to six sessions for stoichiometry, two to three for electrochemistry, two for redox, three to four for organic and two for analysis. In Ras Al Khaimah most schools run one chemistry pathway per year group, so they often cannot deliver supplement content to a single student.

What should we see after the first six weeks of 0620 tutoring?+

A second full marked paper, compared against the one taken in week two, showing movement in the specific topics that were targeted. That is the checkpoint that matters, and agreeing it before the first session is the best protection a parent has in a subject they cannot assess themselves. Movement in the targeted topics with the rest flat is exactly the right result. No movement anywhere after six sessions means the plan is wrong, and the honest response is to change the focus or the tutor rather than to wait and see at week ten.

What does a twelve-week block of chemistry tutoring cost in total?+

At published UAE market bands, twelve weeks at one session a week is twelve hours, costing roughly AED 1,800 to AED 3,600 at the qualified band of AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, or AED 2,400 to AED 5,400 at the examined-specialist band of AED 200 to AED 450. Two sessions a week doubles both. Unitors publishes AED 150 as its IGCSE starting rate and TutorChase quotes AED 270; Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table gives the specialist band. As a cross-check, Bestimate's specialist exam-year monthly estimate is AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above. IB Gram quotes after the free trial lesson.

Is organic chemistry really the hardest part of 0620?+

It is the most feared and rarely the most expensive. Treated as a list of facts it looks enormous; treated as a map it is among the more tractable parts of the syllabus, because homologous series behave consistently and functional groups react predictably. The reframing is often a single session's work, after which the reaction pathways can be drawn on one page and revised from it. The genuinely expensive topic at Extended level is usually moles and stoichiometry, because it sits underneath so many other questions. Organic chemistry tends to cost three to four sessions once the pattern is explicit.

How is 0620 electrolysis examined at Extended level?+

Through reasoning about unfamiliar electrolytes rather than recall of familiar ones, which is why memorisation fails here. A question may name an electrolyte the student has never seen and expect them to work out which ion moves to which electrode, which is discharged in preference, what is produced at each electrode and why. Half-equations are the usual sticking point. Once the pattern is made explicit instead of implicit, this is a two-to-three-session repair, and it is frequently the second-largest mark recovery available after stoichiometry. Past questions on unfamiliar electrolytes are the only reliable practice.

Does my child need a lab to score well on the chemistry practical paper?+

Not for the alternative-to-practical paper, which is entirely written and requires no apparatus. For the practical test, the apparatus work happens at school and cannot be replicated at home, but the marks lost there are usually technique marks rather than manipulation marks: results recorded without units, scales read to the wrong precision, methods described too loosely for another person to follow, error sources named in general terms instead of specifically. All of that is correctable in writing, over a shared screen, using school practical sheets and past questions.

How often should 0620 sessions run in the final term?+

Two a week is the usual shape inside twelve weeks where there are gaps across two or three topic areas: one session repairs content, the other applies it to past questions under time pressure. One a week is enough where the student mainly needs sequence and accountability rather than teaching, and it costs half as much. More than two is rarely productive, because improvement comes from attempted questions between sessions rather than from contact time, and a student who is not completing homework converts extra sessions into extra explanation — which is the thing that was not working already.

What does a 0620 revision week actually look like?+

In a countdown plan, one session teaches or repairs the current topic and sets a question set from past papers. The student completes it during the week. It is marked before the next session, so the following hour starts with corrections rather than with new material, and the lost marks are attributed to specific causes rather than to a general comment. Every fourth week a full timed paper replaces the teaching session. The pattern is deliberately repetitive, because reliability under exam conditions comes from repetition and not from variety.

Should we pause 0620 tutoring during school mock exams?+

Usually yes, and a good tutor will suggest it before you ask. Mock weeks already consume the student's evenings, the school's own assessment produces exactly the marked evidence a plan needs, and competing with it adds load without adding progress. The sensible pattern is to pause during the mocks and resume with the marked mock papers in hand, which is a far better diagnostic than anything bought separately. Rescheduling with reasonable notice should carry no charge; a provider that penalises a pause during school assessments has designed the arrangement around its own revenue.

Can one tutor cover chemistry and biology for the same student?+

Often yes, and in a deadline plan it has a real advantage: one person sequences both subjects so their heaviest demands do not land in the same fortnight. The two share an assessment shape — multiple choice, theory, and a practical or alternative paper worth a fifth of the grade — so the practical technique work transfers directly between them. The trade-off is depth: a specialist in one subject at Extended level is usually stronger in it than a tutor covering both. Where that matters we say so rather than presenting a generalist as a subject specialist.

Send the paper date and one marked script

A chemistry countdown needs two inputs: when the paper is and where the student is now. Send the date, the school, the year group and a photograph of the last marked 0620 script, and a specialist will sequence the twelve topic areas by mark value and tell you plainly what the remaining weeks can cover. A free trial lesson with that tutor follows at no charge, and the three evidence checkpoints are agreed before anything is paid. Every AED band on this page carries its published source, so you can check any plan against the market rather than taking a quote on trust. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.
